Michael Kosnar and Ryan J. Reilly at NBC News:
WASHINGTON — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange plans to plead guilty to a conspiracy charge this week as part of a plea deal with the U.S. Justice Department that will allow him to go free after having spent five years in a British prison, according to court documents. Assange was charged by criminal information — which typically signifies a plea deal — with conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information, the court documents say. A letter from Justice Department official Matthew McKenzie to U.S. District Judge Ramona Manglona of the Northern Mariana Islands District said that Assange would appear in court at 9 a.m. local time Wednesday (7 p.m. ET Tuesday) to plead guilty and that the Justice Department expects Assange will return to Australia, his country of citizenship, after the proceedings.
U.S. charges against Assange stem from one of the largest publications of classified information in American history, which took place during President Barack Obama's first term. Starting in late 2009, according to the government, Assange conspired with Chelsea Manning, a military intelligence analyst, to use his WikiLeaks website to disclose tens of thousands of activity reports about the war in Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of reports about the war in Iraq, hundreds of thousands of State Department cables and assessment briefs of detainees at the U.S. detention camp at Guantånamo Bay, Cuba.
Court documents revealing Assange's plea deal were filed Monday evening in U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean. Assange was expected to appear in that court and to be sentenced to 62 months, with credit for time served in British prison, meaning he would be free to return to Australia, where he was born. “This was an independent decision made by the Department of Justice and there was no White House involvement in the plea deal decision,” National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a statement Monday evening.
Assange has been held in the high-security Belmarsh Prison on the outskirts of London for five years, and he previously spent seven years in self-exile at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London — where he reportedly fathered two children — until his asylum was withdrawn and he was forcibly carried out of the embassy and arrested in April 2019. A superseding indictment was returned more than five years ago, in May 2019, and a second superseding indictment was returned in June 2020.
Assange has been fighting extradition for more than a decade: first in connection with a sex crimes case in Sweden, then in connection with the case against him in the United States. In March, the High Court in London gave him permission for a full hearing on his appeal as he sought assurances that he could rely upon the First Amendment at a trial in the U.S. In May, two judges on the High Court said he could have a full hearing on whether he would be discriminated against in the U.S. because he is a foreign national. A hearing on the issue of Assange's free speech rights had been scheduled for July 9-10. WikiLeaks also published hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee that upended the 2016 presidential race. Russian intelligence officers were subsequently indicted in connection with the hacking in 2018 in a case brought by then-special counsel Robert Mueller. At a joint news conference with then-President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin days later, Trump contradicted the indictment and the intelligence community, saying Putin was "extremely strong and powerful in his denial" that Russians interfered in the 2016 election to help him win.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will return to Australia after he reached a plea deal with the US by pleading guilty.

Julian Assange is free!!!!
Julian Assange is finally free and on the way home to Australia, after more than nine years of captivity first in the ecuadorianischen message in London and then more than five years in the high-level security prison Belmarsh. In a juridical deal with the US Ministry of Justice he should confess in a charge guilty which is "sat out" with five years of Belmarsh.

Assange
Julian Assange is free.
He left Belmarsh maximum security prison on the morning of 24 June, after having spent 1901 days there.
He was granted bail by the High Court in London and was released at Stansted airport during the afternoon, where he boarded a plane and departed the UK.

US Must Drop Charges Against Julian Assange!
In a world where the essence of democracy hinges on transparency and the free flow of information, the relentless pursuit of Julian Assange by the US authorities stands as a grave injustice. It is imperative that the espionage and all other charges levied against Assange, rooted in his work with WikiLeaks, be immediately dropped. The US government's dogged determination to prosecute Assange for publishing documents that reveal potential war crimes committed by the US military is a blatant assault on the fundamental right to freedom of expression.
Julian Assange, a beacon of journalistic integrity, is currently confined within the oppressive walls of Belmarsh, a high-security prison in the UK. His imprisonment is a direct consequence of a US extradition request, aiming to prosecute him for disseminating disclosed documents through WikiLeaks. This is an affront to justice and a dangerous precedent for freedom of the press. Amnesty International vehemently opposes any move to extradite or otherwise transfer Assange to the US, where he would face severe human rights abuses, including the specter of torture and inhumane treatment, such as prolonged solitary confinement.
The hostility directed at Julian Assange by US officials at the highest levels further erodes his right to be presumed innocent, casting a long shadow over the fairness of any trial he might face. This campaign of vilification is not just an attack on Assange, but on the very principles of justice and democracy.
Assange's publication of disclosed documents as part of his work with WikiLeaks should be celebrated, not condemned. This act of transparency mirrors the essential functions that investigative journalists perform daily. To prosecute Assange for this is to strike fear into the heart of journalism itself, compelling reporters to self-censor in the face of potential prosecution. Such a chilling effect on the right to freedom of expression is intolerable and must be resisted with all our might.
Julian Assange is not just a man; he is a symbol of the struggle for truth in an age of deceit. The charges against him are an attack on every journalist, every whistleblower, and every citizen who believes in the right to know what their government is doing. The United States must drop these charges immediately and unequivocally. Only then can we begin to restore faith in the principles of freedom and justice that underpin our society.
In this urgent call for action, we stand not just for Julian Assange, but for the very future of a free and open press. We stand for the truth, for accountability, and for the enduring power of free expression. The time to act is now. The world is watching.

Review: Defending the Realm - MI5 and the Shayler Affair - by Mark Hollingsworth and Nick Fielding
This is just another one of the many books I’ve read on the security services / spies / intelligence agencies in general. I guess I have a morbid fascination. Non-fiction throws up some pretty weird stuff – Life itself is a lot stranger than fiction. This tale from a turncoat ex MI5 employee David Shayler, comes from a time of great change in the world, Security Services in general and it

Kein rechtstaatliches Verfahren

A Sir Miles Axelrod thought:
Miles would have ended up being charged with international terrorism, along with a multitude of other crimes, such as the murder of a British and US secret service agent.
Terrorism is defined as using violence and threats to intimidate the public or coerce a governmental body to achieve social, political and/or financial goals. Which is what he did. Internationally.
He's almost certainly secured within the HSU at HM Prison, Belmarsh (the UK's most secure prison).

Julian Assange's prison cell, in Belmarsh, was recreated. 6 m2. With original noise backdrop.
About 5 years to live in it. This alone is torture. His crime: Expose war criminals and their war crimes. Speechless.
