Headcanons about Rosinante/Corazons childhood in the marines that mean way too much to me; a running list. (Only I got way too distracted by Smoker and Belle Mere, so it’s not very Corazon centric anymore lol)

1. Cora, Belle Mere, and Smoker all met in the academy and were a well known trio until they got split up after graduation.

•Belle Mere was actually the one who introduced both Smoker and Rosinante to cigarettes and cigars and she always held it over their heads

•When they were all underaged and obviously not allowed to smoke, they would make Rosinante go into stores and buy it for the three of them because his height made him look MUCH older than the mid teen that he was

•the three of them were practically inseparable and if you couldn’t find them it was just process of elimination, going from Belle Mere’s bunk to Rosinantes, and if they weren’t there than it was 100% because they were all messing around in Smokers bunk.

•They each had wildly different tastes in literature. Rosinante loved reading cheesy romances that you could buy with nothing but half a dollar and some prayers, Smoker was into reading noir mysteries that took a week and a half to figure out the plots of, and Belle Mere always gravitated towards action adventures that could be finished in two sittings. Belle and Smoker maintained that they had the best taste in books, but Rosinante was never really hiding the fact that the shitty romances he read were in fact shitty. Fun, yes, but still shitty.

•Smoker and Belle Mere both teased Cora relentlessly for being a nepo baby, but that was their thing so it was fine. The second anyone else even implied that Rosinante hadn’t earned his position in the academy the two of them were instantly out for blood.

•When Belle Mere first got her period she tried to hide it from both of them, and was pretty successful up until Smoker spotted blood on her pants and the boys instantly started freaking out and trying to rush her to the nurses. Belle Mere was SO embarrassed, but not nearly as much as they were once Vice Admiral Tsurru herself took it as her duty as Rosinantes only female role model to teach both of the boys about… puberty. Smoker, Cora, and Belle mere didn’t look each other in the eyes for days straight after that.

•at one point, Rosinante and Belle Mere were wrestling over who got first dibs on the last dessert left one the mess hall and Belle Mere accidentally broke Cora’s nose. The second that she realized what had happened she pinned him down again and snapped it back into place in a clumsy attempt to hide the fact that she had just broken the nose of the vice admiral’s son. It healed weird and left a bump on his formerly straight nose, and Rosinante never failed to hold it over her if he needed to guilt Belle Mere into doing something he didn’t want to. While the initial tousle and following injury was happening, Smoker took it as an opportunity to steal the last dessert from under them, and with the sudden broken nose, neither Belle nor Cora even remembered why they were wrestling in the first place.

•once, during a long game of spin the bottle they played long enough that each of them kissed the other just once. After that night (where they had been drinking way too much, while underage) they never brought it up again. It did however cause them each to reach some realizations. Belle Mere was suddenly taking notice of the other girls when she changed into uniform in the girls locker room and realizing “huh… lesbian?”. Smoker realized that just maybe girls weren’t as fun to kiss as he had been told they were, and Rosinante was becoming introduced to the concept of bi-panic. Aside from those three spin the bottle kisses though, their entire friendship was platonic for basically their whole lives.

•they usually spent their academy holidays with Sengoku because he lived closer than Smoker and Belle Meres home towns and because he wasn’t home half the time anyways and his house as a vice admiral was huge to them. This, and the fact that none of the three had very safe childhoods, so when Smoker and Belle joined the marines, they didn’t intend to return.

•after the three of them all graduated and were moved to separate bases they each exchanged little gifts (think engraved lighters, lockets with the other twos pictures inside designed to look like a pocket watch from outside, etc), with each other, each carrying it with them wherever they went, and in Rosi and Belle’s case, all the way to the grave.

•Belle mere never wrote Smoker or Rosinante after she deserted to save her girls, but every year on new years she would stay up after putting the girls to bed and write a letter to each of them, telling them about her year, how much she missed them, the antics the kids had gotten up to, everything. Because she HAD in fact deserted from the marines though, she knew that sending those messages, even to the people who were her closest friends, could endanger herself and the girls, so she never sent them. They lived in a small wooden box she kept under her bed, right up until Arlong came along and wrecked the house looking for hidden gold.

•Smoker had heard that Rosinante had gone undercover, but not from his friend himself. He had assumed (hoped) that the sudden stop in the letters he was getting from Cora meant that he was on a mission, but didn’t know for sure until after Rosinantes death. When he heard the news he spent a full day with Sengoku, in the vice admiral’s garden as the two mourned together.

•when Belle Meres letters stopped coming back, smoker didn’t have the luxury of assuming she was undercover, and went about mourning the loss of the two closest friends he had, unaware that Belle wouldn’t actually die for years, but mourning her all the same.

Oh. WOW that ended darker than I was thinking.

the horo-horo fruit making people depressed doesn’t make sense to me when combined with vegapunk’s theory about humanity’s desires being responsible for devil fruits.

……that being said, the universal need to see deceased loved ones again would probably be enough to will a devil fruit into existence, right?

Basically my argument as to how the Horo-Horo fruit could be another misnomer situation (a la “the Model: Nika fruit was intentionally mislabeled”)but the Awakened form hasn’t been accessed in so long that it’s left out of most guidebooks because nobody remembers if it existed in the first place. (Related to my au inspired by @andaniellight )
