May I ask if there will be a different naming convention in place for serp rp as opposed to the normal wc universe naming conventions? [Apologies if this is info available elsewhere]
yes the naming conventions are slightly different: for starters, cats are given their full names at birth.
for the most part, cats have warriors-style pre-suffix names, but because the full name is given at birth the two names don't have to make sense if they were separated. (basically you don't have to justify the prefix "king-" if you are naming your cat kingcrab) we encourage unique prefixes based on belizean wildlife, even the ones with weirder names.
however! some cats have different types of names/titles. here are some examples; The Bends Miracle's Edge Call of the Ember Eye-of-the-Hurricane in the lore, it's considered incredibly bad luck to name your children after snakes, so keep that in mind, however you're still allowed to
there's no limit to creativity
(there's one limit. no tribe of russian water style names)

Classrooms and Cashews
We have been having a wonderful time with the students from the village visiting our neighborhood this week. Each year, the teachers have a week in which they organize special events and activities for the students. This year, the teachers asked if they could bring their classrooms to Carmelita Gardens, so our activities committee leapt into action to create a fun, educational morning of activities for each of the classes.
Tumblr media
Over four mornings and 3 hours each morning, nearly 240 students are learning about how trees make fruit and how we can preserve those to eat when they are out of season, They are learning about sustainability and how solar power works. I am having a great time demonstrating the pump organ for the children, and I think a couple of the students want to move into my music room so they can play all day! Our Standard 4 (5th grade) students are also going to learn about entrepreneurship and personal finance. And last but not least, the children are learning how to play pickleball.
We are in our hot dry season now, so I have also taken the students down to the river to cool off in the shade of our palapa before walking to the park for pickleball. The palapa is almost ready for a hammock or two, and that is where I will often be hanging out.
Tumblr media
In addition, the students learned about the US tradition of giving an apple to the teacher-we did it Belizean style with a cashew apple.
Tumblr media
I can't wait to eat the fruit, but have not decided if I am going to eat the cashew or plant it. I will keep you posted!

Nailah Hunter Album Review: Lovegaze
Tumblr media
(Fat Possum)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Devotion has been a big theme throughout Nailah Hunter's musical life. Sure, much has been made about her early days; the daughter of a Belizean pastor, Hunter played drums and guitar and sang in the church choir. When she enrolled at CalArts for music and first took a harp lesson, she committed to the instrument, purportedly studying it for 6 hours a day. And over the past few years, she's diligently developed a cosmic ambient voice, releasing various EPs and singles and collaborating with everyone from Montreal shoegazers No Joy to generative music app Endel (via their Leaving Records series). But it's on her debut full-length album Lovegaze where the idea of being steadfast finds its way into every element, from Hunter's clear musical prowess to the songs' themes.
First and foremost, if some of her earliest material floated along, Hunter's process on Lovegaze seems much more deliberate. She wrote the demos while spending time on the coast of the English channel, on a borrowed Celtic harp, before fleshing out the songs with producer Cicely Goulder. From the get-go, Hunter's vocals hold their weight against the instrumentation, rasping over soft piano lines, ripples of cymbal, thumping percussion, and textured soundscapes on opener "Strange Delights". On "000", she draws out syllables to make her voice an instrument: "Sparrow on / Billow, yawn." On closer "Into The Sun", her soulful contralto is much more upfront in the mix, a complement to tactile harp textures as she sings of dreams of "beheadings and goose-feather bedding," giving off certain traditional folk vibes.
Overall, Lovegaze's songs' styles are much more varied than the rest of Hunter's discography to date. "Through The Din" builds into a trip hop sway over the top of a circular harp melody. "Finding Mirrors" cascades down a trap beat. Free jazz elements creep up on the title track and "Adorned", icy drum skitters and low-mixed saxophone, respectively, appearing like background characters you nonetheless can't take your eyes off of. Still, there are songs like "Cloudbreath", an instrumental foray back into ambient harp and synth collage, that recall her earliest work.
Perhaps the best part of Lovegaze, though, is Hunter's deft treatment of the work we put into ourselves, each other, and our surroundings. "Finding Mirrors" and "Bleed" portray the exhausting nature of love. On the latter, Hunter coos and cries, fighting for someone or something while longing for someone else to fight for her, desiring reciprocation. And standout "Adorned" is inspired by the human tendency for destruction--of natural spaces and other people--as Hunter sings with a vulnerable warble over a synth hum. "Space is my only relief / Space, my only reprieve," she sings. Later on in the song, she layers ghostly backing vocals as if to illustrate a collection of living things, together in their aloneness. With Lovegaze, Hunter moves beyond mere sound composition to build a cohesive world.

Guatemala Days 18-21
Lívingston and Río Dulce
Coming up on the end of this trip. It’s been a weird couple of days.
I’ve spent the last 5 days in Lívingston, Guatemala on the Belizean border. Lívingston is a very interesting community with a really fascinating history.
It is populated by a mix of indigenous Q’eqchi’ Maya and Garifuna. It is the only Garifuna community in Guatemala.
The Garifuna are a group of Afro-Indigenous people descended from two shipwrecked slave ships which crashed on the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean in the mid 19th century. The Africans aboard those ships managed to escape being enslaved and mixed with the indigenous Arawak and Caribe peoples of the island as well as recently freed enslaved people from elsewhere in the Caribbean, as slavery in the British colonies was outlawed in 1833 (I think that’s the right year?).
Anyway, this unique time and place and intersection of cultures allowed a really unique combination of a variety of Africans that were never enslaved and thus maintained their cultures and local indigenous cultures. They called themselves the Garifuna people.
In 1845 I think? The British government became wary of the Garifuna because they were not submitting to British rule and inciting revolts. They evicted them from St. Vincent and they developed communities all over the Central American Caribbean coast. Mainly in Honduras and Belize, with Lívingston being the only Guatemalan Garifuna community. There is also a thriving Garifuna community in New York City.
All this to say that Lívingston has a really interesting and unique culture. It is also really isolated and hard to get to, which I think has helped them to preserve their culture. It isn’t on an island, but it is surrounded by canyons and thick jungle, so the only way to get to it is by a 2 hour boat ride on the Río Dulce, which eventually leads out to the ocean. You can take a boat from Lívingston to Belize as well.
I’ve been sick the whole time I was in Lívingston unfortunately with a stomach bug, which meant I couldn’t really eat much, but I still enjoyed my time there. I was also feeling overall kind of down and exhausted so I spent most of the time sleeping.
I went to a restaurant called Las Tres Garifunas where I met a guy named George who told me more about Garifuna history and language. Garifuna is one of 24 languages spoken in Guatemala (22 distinct Mayan languages, Garifuna, and Spanish).
I took a day trip along the Río Dulce, which reminds me so much of the Amazon River. We went to Siete Altares which is a hike literally through the middle of a river bed where there at least 7 waterfalls and dozens more smaller ones. It was really beautiful but the trail was really hazardous, I only fell once though!
We also went to Playa Blanca, the only white sand beach in Guatemala. Due to all the volcanoes most of the beaches have black sand. We spent a couple hours there relaxing which was nice.
On my last day I spent a very long time on the dock watching the egrets and pelicans and hung out in a cafe for a very long time just people watching. In the evening I went to a bar and tried gifiti, a Garifuna liquor made with rum fermented in a jar with herbs. They also had Garifuna drumming and dancing which was cool to see. You can definitely see the mix of African influences with Ladino Guatemalan music and indigenous Guatemalan style.
Overall despite not feeling my best it was a nice quiet final week in Guatemala and I’m glad I came to Lívingston.
Today I spent a bazillion hours in a boat and a hot bus to get back to Guatemala City, and am currently sitting in my hotel eating uber eats fried chicken, watching Rush Hour 3, and awaiting my 3am wake up call. I’ve also got an exciting 12 hour layover in Texas tomorrow so that’ll be fun.
I’ve had a great time in Guatemala these past few weeks. I have learned so so much and I’m really glad I came. My goal was to learn as much as I could because my school I work at has been receiving more and more recent immigrants from Guatemala and I wanted to be able to connect with them more. I’m also glad to be back to traveling internationally after these past few pandemic years.
Until next time!

Arcana Echoes | Day 10: Cuisine 🥥🥘🌴
Tumblr media
🌴 For this prompt, it was super hard for me to pin down which dish I wanted to use as the focus point for the fic. So I had to make a moodboard to really dive into what the trio ate during their childhood.🌴
🥥 Some OC flavor profile facts🥥
Kiping’s flavor profile typically includes foods that are salty, sweet, tangy, or a combination of the three. Between Ozy, Khleo and herself, it’s Kip that likes seafood the most. Some of her favorite dishes include tilapia, snapper, saltfish, and fried conch. She loves plantains all ways, all day. She’ll snack on the salty chips in the daytime and eat the softer, sweeter ones with her meals.
Ozy enjoys bold, savory, and meaty flavors, (like oxtail!) but only if he can pair it with something fresh, clean, and acidic (like conch salad). This preference most likely developed in his early years growing up in a wealthy family where it was routine to eat something cold and palate-cleansing before and after the main course.
Khleo tends to go for those uncomplicated, comforting flavors like cheese, bread, beans, and rice. They prefer fish and poultry over red meat. Most of the time, they don’t eat meat because they often find it too overseasoned or overwhelming in flavor. Their idea of indulging in meat is every now and then cooking up some chicken gizzards/hearts to add to their rice.
🥘 Moodboard breakdown🥘
Coconut Tart (Bahamian Style): This is the highlight for today’s fic and Kipling’s absolute favorite dessert. She doesn’t get to eat it that often because it’s kind of a pain to make. Kip enjoys the texture more than anything. The bread around the grated coconut is crumbly and dry, while the center is softer and a lot sweeter.
Black Beans and Rice: All three of them like this as it’s one of the most common side dishes. Khleo definitely eats it the most. They like to switch up the seasonings and vegetables incorporated in the beans.
Ackee and Saltfish (Jamaican Style): Kipling’s favorite dish according to her bio. Fun fact about the ackee fruit is that it’s poisonous if you pick it directly from the tree. It has to fall from the branch on its own before it’s safe to eat!
Curry Goat (Jamaican Style): This is one of Ozy’s favorite dishes. It takes a while to make, but for Ozy, it’s always worth the wait! Kipling is not a fan of goat and Khleo does not care for how deep the flavors go on this dish.
Guava Duff (Bahamian Style): Another heartwarming dessert from Kipling’s childhood. All three children enjoyed indulging in the duff!
Powder Bun (Belizean Style): One of Khleo’s favorite things to eat for breakfast. In fact, if there was enough powder bun left over, Khleo would take as many as they could and eat them over the course of the day.
Boiled Green Banana: Ozy won’t eat it. Even with salt added, there’s a level of blandness there that he can’t get past. Kipling only eats it with her ackee and saltfish. Khleo, however, will happily eat boiled bananas plain, sometimes cut up and mixed in with rice and beans.
Conch Fritters: All the kids enjoyed this common staple entree. You can pair it with a variety of sides or just eat it as a side or an appetizer!
