Questions to Ask When Interviewing for an Internship (Guest Post)
Questions to Ask When Interviewing for an Internship (Guest Post)
You have learned almost everything you could in the school setting from your professors, textbooks, and overnighters on group projects. Now what?
Now comes securing that internship. Internships can be essential before you step out into the brutal reality of the actual workforce. Internships allow you to gain hands-on exposure to what it would be like working in the real world. The theories,…

I know I’ve said this a million times, but Russia is an absolutely amazing country to visit. If you ever have the opportunity to see it, DO NOT hesitate. Living in Moscow for a little over a year has been one of the most surprisingly fantastic experiences of my life.
I know there are many preconceived notions about what Moscow, Russia is like, though, especially as an American.…I had many of them before I moved there. So, hopefully, this post will shed a little light on what to expect, should you ever decide to visit Moscow!
(Note: These are not in any particular order, just a list of what surprised me!)
12 Things That Surprised Me About Moscow, Russia (As an American)
1.) How safe it is in Moscow. As an American, I had this image in my head of Moscow being one of the most dangerous cities in the world…where an American would be in mortal danger at all times if they were visiting. I could not have been more wrong. Moscow is one of the safest cities I have ever been to.
Sure, if you’re in politics or organized crime, then perhaps Moscow isn’t the safest city. But as an average tourist visiting – you are likely safer here than you are at home. (I’m from a small city in Wisconsin, and honestly felt safer walking alone in Moscow at night than I do back home.)
This was always something that family and friends remarked about as well when visiting. They couldn’t get over how safe the city is.
That being said, Moscow is still a big city. Exercise caution as you would anywhere else – don’t be a complete idiot. Be aware of your surroundings and your belongings. Keep your eyes open for pickpockets, especially in busy tourist areas.
2.) Russians’ perspective of Americans being in their country. For the most part, everyone’s attitude in Moscow that I’ve encountered over this last year has been of genuine curiosity – “What brings you to Moscow as an American? How do you like it here? What do you think of the cold?”
As an American, I had this preconceived notion that Muscovites wouldn’t like me being here. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Everyone has been very kind and not a single person ever voiced a prejudice about Americans. (And from what I’ve come to gather, most Russians are not the sort to hold their opinions back in order to be polite.)
3.) How nice the vast majority of Muscovites are. Moscow is a very large city, and I didn’t meet every single person living here. However, again, I had this idea that all Russians would be rather cold or rude to me. This, again, couldn’t have been further from the truth.
In Russian culture, it’s not normal to smile much, especially at strangers. So, I can see how Russian people may come off as unfriendly to a foreigner. However, once you talk to most people here, they are very friendly!
Inside the Kremlin. Putin works on the 3rd floor of this building, I was told .
4.) The average Russian in Moscow did not care about my American politics that much (or at least, it does not come up in conversation as frequently as I thought it would). I had lived in Australia for the previous US presidential election, and it was literally the only thing most people wanted to talk to me about. (I started replying I was Canadian when I asked where I was from, to avoid having that conversation over and over again.)
I also lived in Argentina for a year after that, and most people could not wait to chat with me about Trump and the current American political climate (all just out of curiosity – not malice).
However, I have had it come up only a handful of times in conversation while in Russia. Sure, there are always some grumbles about Putin, but no one is going out of their way to hear my thoughts on America’s current political situation. (I’m assuming this is because Russians are also just as sick of having to talk about their thoughts on Putin…)
5.) How English-friendly Moscow is. This is a fairly recent change, though. I had arrived in Moscow just weeks after they had hosted the World Cup. Most signs and menus were translated because of this. Many of the younger generations of Muscovites also know basic English.
Knowing a handful of words in Russian is useful in order to be polite. However, you’ll be just fine with only know English if you visit Moscow (or St. Petersburg for that matter).
6.) How beautiful and colorful Moscow is – even the metro! As an American, we only ever think of the drab and grey apartment buildings built during the Stalin era. However, even the architecture built during that time was beautiful in its own right. Plus, the multitude of gold-domed and colorful Orthodox cathedrals look straight out of a fairytale. And have you seen the metro in Moscow?! Some of the stations resemble art museums!
Inside the Moscow metro.
7.) How quiet it is – even in the metro! Now, Moscow isn’t as quiet as Tokyo is. It is, however, not too far behind! Most people are not overly loud or talking on cellphones while on public transport. Sure, if a large group of people is walking down the street, they’ll likely be chattering amongst themself. But overall, this city is rather quiet for its large population. Not many people will be honking their horns either. (Unless it’s rush hour… then it might get a little loud on busy roads.)
8.) How clean Moscow is. Being from the US, I’m always picturing New York or Chicago or San Francisco when I think of large cities. These are cities not exactly known for their cleanliness (especially when it comes to public transport). So, the fact that there is hardly any litter on the streets of Moscow, and I don’t want to burn my clothes and bathe in bleach after using the metro… never failed to surprise me!
9.) The fashion in Moscow. I mean, I was always aware that Moscow is a very fashion-forward city. However, I was still surprised by how nicely dressed the vast majority of Russian women are. Classy and timeless is the best way to describe the style of Moscow women – I loved it! (Most women would wear dresses and fantastic shoes and fur coats.)
10.) The amount of wealth in Moscow. Moscow is always in the top 10 lists of cities for “where billionaires live.” I couldn’t get over the number of Maseratis and Bentleys you could see on the road at any given time. Or just how packed the Chanel stores would be… We tend to not think of this, though, when we think of Moscow. (And for good reason… this wealth isn’t exactly evenly distributed.)
11.) How difficult it is to get a visa to Russia as an American. Even if you only want a tourist visa to visit Moscow, as an American, this is going to be a painful process. We’ve gone through rigorous visa processes in the past with our previous international moves… but Russia takes the cake as the most difficult one we’ve experienced. You also need an “invitation letter” to apply for your visa – which is a new one for me too! (Click here for more on that.)
12.) That Lenin’s body is on display in Red Square. Soviet leader Vladimir Ilych Lenin’s embalmed body can be visited inside Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb. His preserved body has been on public display there since shortly after his death in 1924. It’s weird and rather surprising to see, to say the least. He looks more like a wax figurine nowadays.
Now, I’m curious which, of these things surprised you the most about Moscow? Let me know in the comments!

Understanding to Stand after Falling Re:Zero [November 2019 OWLS Tour]
Tumblr media
Hey everyone, it's the 11th OWLS tour for the year. Thank for following us through out the months reading and contributing your thoughts on our thoughts. It's been an amazing year, definitely a roller coaster both good and bad. And it's coming to an end.
Tumblr media
End of the year parties........ We have been busy reorganizing the blog and getting everything better, hope you are liking our new look by the way but I saw the topic for this month and I just had to take time for this one. Plus it's my birthday today so wanted to write a post for all of you and what better than an OWL post. The topic we have been talking about this month is something we have all been through and it is "Failure". One of the best ways we can learn is through failure. This month we will be talking about the failures of our favorite characters in pop culture media and what we can learn from them. We will also reflect on our own mistakes and failures and how those experiences have allowed us to grow as human beings. It's something I personally have gone through a lot of especially in my earlier life. Failure is hard and painful, it can happen at any point as you aim for something you want. For me, I think the hard part about failure is the doubt it gives you. The hopelessness that maybe you are just not good enough.
Tumblr media
Instant failure just add water (how I use to feel) Failure can define you, destroy you or strengthen you and for me, a character that goes through each of these is; Subaru Natsuki
Tumblr media
17-year-old Subaru Natsuki a shut-in and gamer. Whose transported to a fantasy world has he leaves a convenience store. Where he meets the beautiful Emilia, whose in search of her stolen possession and saves him from some hoodlums. The two hit it off after that and to thank her, he decides to help her look for her missing possession.
Tumblr media
During their search for it, they are murdered. Subaru Natsuki wakes up to the moment of being harassed by the hoodlums and Emilia saving him, realising he has the ability he calls "Returns By Death" -the ability to resurrect after death. Meeting Emilia changes Subaru Natsuki from a guy who takes the easy way out of things to a loyal person who is always willing to help the people he cares about. Helping the people he cares about sometimes forces him to take the path that's not easy and filled with failure after failure. Some failures he's able to reset sometimes while others he has to learn to live with no matter how hard. This really tests his resolve to always get back up no matter how many times he fails.
Tumblr media
Comical way of showing the trial Subaru goes through He learns that even if you are blessed with a magnificent power, sometimes you still need to put in a lot of hard work and sometimes even then it's not about being a one-man army, you still need the support of others to try to avoid failure. And even then failure might still happen but the work done in self-improvement is something failure can never take away. The fear of failure or failure it's self is really what pushes us to be better than what we currently are. So maybe failure is not so bad.
Tumblr media
He realizes no matter where you are, failure is a thing in any world even a fantasy world. As long as you aim for a dream - resolve, support and just realizing that failure is not necessarily a bad thing but a stage of growth, learning and humbleness are one of the things we must learn to have, as we work to make a dream reality.
Tumblr media
I really feel the way Subaru acts in his earlier life before being transported to the fantasy world was a safety mechanism, I mean you can never fail if you never try at anything. Failure is a hard pill to swallow, most of us can end up choking on it sometimes. Failure has friends and comes with a lot of emotions that make you really feel less than. But under all this, if we can look really close it's also a learning stage a place for growth which Subaru eventually realizes and truly becoming Emilia's knight.
Tumblr media
When is the second season of Re:ZERO - Starting Life in Another World coming out you asked?
Tumblr media
For all of us, that love Re:ZERO - Starting Life in Another World, the second season should start beginning of 2020 maybe debuting Winter 2020 season.
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for reading, sticking around to the end of my ramblings and thoughts on failure. Leave comments I would love to hear your thoughts on the topic. Be sure to read Lyn's post on this topic. Also if you haven’t already check out Pinkie’s post Never a failure. Always a Lesson. You should. They are amazing bloggers who's thoughts on the topic failure will be an interesting read. Read the full article

Jacopo Tissi in Swan Lake at The Royal Opera House, August 2019
Three years ago, Jacopo Tissi left La Scala to join the Bolshoi Company in Moscow. Makhar Vaziev, the Company’s current director, was previously the director at La Scala and had seen Tissi’s work. It was Vaziev (on having to find a substitute for Sergei Polunin, who was himself a substitute for David Hallberg), who chose the young corps de ballet dancer to partner Svetlana Zakharova on the opening night of Alexei Ratmansky’s The Sleeping Beauty.
Before the summer, Tissi was dancing again with Zakharova when he created the role of Boy Capel, Coco Chanel’s lover and muse, in the Bolshoi’s new one-act ballet Gabrielle Chanel, with Zakharova as the French fashion designer. However, more frequently he dances with the Bolshoi’s youngest star, Alena Kovaleva. He was partnered with her in July 2017 at New York’s Lincoln Center for the Jewels Golden Anniversary Celebration when Emeralds was danced by the Paris Opera Ballet, Rubies by the New York City Ballet and the Bolshoi presented Diamonds, with Kovaleva and Tissi as the principal couple. In September 2018 they were again together when the Bolshoi Ballet brought La Bayadère to La Scala, and in August of this year they danced in Swan Lake during the Bolshoi’s three-week stay at the Royal Opera House.
That leap in the dark three years ago seems to have paid off?
Yes, it was an important decision, but one I’m pleased about.
How have you changed as a dancer and as a person training, living and performing in Moscow?
I have grown up so much both as a person and in my dancing. My experience of life in Moscow was full of new situations, new ways of seeing things, and I was encountering things that I just didn’t know. It certainly wasn’t easy, but it has brought me great rewards, such as learning to speak Russian. Today I feel well integrated both in daily life and in the life of the theatre where I have been very warmly welcomed.
These years at the Bolshoi have been a fundamental part of my artistic growth, teaching me so much and giving me many great opportunities. Two key figures are for me are my teacher Alexander Vetrov and my director, Makhar Vaziev. Every day I feel lucky to have the chance to work at the Bolshoi, and call this legendary place “my theatre”!

One of those great opportunities was to play Solor with the Bolshoi on La Scala’s stage, a stage that you’ve been on since you were a child at La Scala’s ballet school.
That was a special moment. I’m very attached to La Scala and dancing on that stage after two years with the Bolshoi, in a leading role, was definitely a huge challenge. It was a big responsibility but at the same time a great honour. In the audience, there were many of my family and friends, who don’t get to see me that often on stage – it is always an immense joy to know they’re in the theatre.
And once again, you were dancing with Alena Kovaleva.
Alena and I started almost at the same time at the Bolshoi. We’ve prepared and danced many premieres together and we have also been in many other theatres on tour. Sharing these experiences has given us a special bond, which I think is essential for our work together and our dancing.
Together they have danced Diamonds, Études, Grand Pas Classique, La Bayadère, Flames of Paris, and Raymonda, and in September 2017 they debuted in Swan Lake, roles that they recently brought to London.
It was fantastic to hear that we’d been given two performances at the Royal Opera House. I made my debut with The Royal Ballet in May when I stepped in as Romeo in Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet – which was a new choreography for me – but to bring a Bolshoi repertory ballet to the theatre, and one of my favourite roles, was thrilling.
Again, a lot of weight on your shoulders.
There was a great deal of preparation for the premiere, not just on a technical level, but also on the artistic one. It is a beautiful journey to find every aspect of a role, and Seigfreid is one that is continually developing with each show. He’s such an interesting character, and in Grigorovich’s version there are particular psychological nuances, which gives the opportunity to express many different moods.
Were you particularly nervous about this debut?
The first performance is always a little more tense, but I enjoyed the show, and I felt very ‘in the moment’.
You are now used to the vast Bolshoi stage. La Scala’s is smaller, and that of The Royal Opera House is even smaller.
The Bolshoi stage is very big, so almost always when we travel we have to adjust a little bit depending on the different stages, but I really like the atmosphere at the Royal Opera House.

To finish off the interview, I wanted to ask him about his character. His apparent timidity must cover a steely core otherwise how could he have confronted so many challenges and alone, far away from his family and friends? All the while he was also battling to learn a new language and – even if he did feel warmly welcomed at the Bolshoi – facing the critical and maybe resentful looks of dancers who have gone through the rigorous Russian training. Many would have been defeated by the pressure.
It’s difficult to describe oneself… maybe you could do it?
And that’s it – I can’t. Tissi smiles often but there seems to be a melancholic layer just beneath the surface and as he smiles he often drops his gaze. From time to time he appears to drift off into his own pensive space. He is something of an enigma. But in an age when everything is laid bare in social media, it could be that some mystery isn’t such a bad thing, and for someone interpreting various characters on stage perhaps, even, an asset.

We talked to Deborah Harkness and the cast and creators of the upcoming A Discovery of Witches TV adaptation! We’ve got new details about the series, including what fans can expect and where we’ll be able to watch in the USA.
Anyone who has talked to me over the last month knows that A Discovery of Witches was at the tip-top of my San Diego Comic-Con mustsee/mustdo list! As soon as I found out that the series would have a panel at SDCC, I knew I had to find my way to that panel and pressroom. Mostly, I was anticipating news about a U.S. home for the series… information that we did get! A Discovery of Witches will stream on Sundance Now, AMC Networks’ direct-to-consumer SVOD service curated with high quality dramas, comedies and crime thrillers, and Shudder, the leading premium streaming service for thriller, suspense and horror.
A Discovery of Witches will have eight episodes in the first season, and when it makes its debut in the U.S. and Canada (on a date to be confirmed later), all episodes available simultaneously on both Sundance Now and Shudder.
While our UK friends will get to enjoy the series starting Friday, September 14 on Sky One, for now, us U.S. fans will be rewatching the fabulous teaser trailer.
To help tide us over, I also suggest checking out the interviews we did with Deborah Harkness and the A Discovery of Witches cast at SDCC! Teresa Palmer (Diana Bishop), Alex Kingston (Sarah Bishop), Valarie Pettiford (Emily Mather), Owen Teale (Peter Knox), and Lachlan MacKinnon (EP) were on-hand to tell us more about adapting this series to TV and what fans can expect.
According to Deb Harkness, she was only interested in having A Discovery of Witches adapted as long as it was possible to maintain the integrity of the story. It was a difficult process to find the right collaborators for the project. Similarly, the actual work of adaptation was fun, but ambitious, especially in terms of blowing up the world and expanding beyond Diana Bishop’s POV and experiences.
Deb also shares her thoughts on casting the series–how the casting of Teresa Palmer as Diana was perfect, in terms of her physical appearance and spirit. In fact, Deb thinks that in the series casting as a whole, all of the actors have been on point, and this has translated to their authentic portrayal of the characters. Owen Teale agrees, and discusses the ways in which he’s taken on the role of Peter Knox and advocated for his character.
As a viewer, I especially appreciate Deb’s and Owen’s discussion of wanting to have a story that appeals to women in their 30s and addressing women at various stages of life. This also couples with the LGBTQ representation embedded in the series and the broader ways A Discovery of Witches encourages inclusion and empathy in entertainment and the real world.
In our interview with Teresa Palmer she tells us that she wasn’t familiar with the book series when it came out. Rather it was the script that really caught her attention and Teresa instantly felt connected to Diana Bishop. (And we know that Deb feels the exact same about Teresa!) Tez shares how she loves Diana’s passion and vulnerability and the journey Diana takes to come to terms with who she is as a witch. I ask Teresa a little more about the tension within Diana, between the academic and the supernatural being, and she discusses how the magic literally bubbles out of Diana, as she wrestles with suppress that side of herself.
Lachlan jumps in before we can get too spoiler-y, but tells us about the technical elements of filming magic scenes, especially as Diana’s magic grows over the series. Teresa also discusses the chemistry test with Matthew Goode and how organic their interactions felt from day one. At about 8:00, Teresa tells a story about how she and Matthew would goof around on set, to the point that a serious scene had to be transitioned to a comedic one. But ultimately, the series is a love story with a strong element of thriller, based as much as possible in the real world.
Both Teresa and Lachlan talk about adapting a series with such a dedicated fanbase. Teresa says this helps her want to do her best with the series and how they all appreciate the love of the fans: “I also have found it just thrilling to have this kind of energy behind the series.”
Finally, we chatted with Alex Kingston and Valarie Pettiford, who play Sarah Bishop and Emily Mather, Diana’s aunts who raise her after her parents’ deaths. Valarie and Alex speak about the ways in which their romantic relationship onscreen normalize LGBTQ relationships, especially in this world where being Queer isn’t what sets them apart. Rather, it’s one’s distinction as a witch, vampire, or daemon that they have to hide, not their love. Alex shares an interesting story about a photo at the Bishop house of Sarah and Emily wearing pussy-hats at their local Women’s March. Whereas one producer was concerned about being too political, Alex, Valarie, and Deb perceived it as being realistic. Sarah and Emily would have been at that march! Piggy-backing off of that, Alex and Valarie discuss how the key creative decision-makers on the series are women.
I follow with a question about the theme of family in the series and both Alex and Valarie talk about the tension between Sarah and Diana, motivated by deep care and concern for her niece. This also expands to a discussion of recognizing one’s ancestry and they ways in which the Bishop and Mather families have been connected for centuries.
Alex and Valarie also talk about seeing the first four episodes of the series and how impressed they are with they way the episodes have been shot, which helps to ground the story in a realism reminiscent of our world.
What do you think? Which scenes are you hoping will make it from the book to screen? Check out 20+ images from the panel below, and make sure to stay tuned to WSN for your A Discovery of Witches updates!

Filmed in the UK at Wolf Studios Wales and on location in Oxford, “A Discovery of Witches” is a contemporary love story that begins against the backdrop of Oxford academic life, in a world where small numbers of witches, vampires and daemons live and work, unseen amongst humans, hiding in plain sight. Teresa Palmer is the brilliant historian Diana Bishop, a reluctant witch denying her heritage. The discovery of a bewitched manuscript in Oxford’s Bodleian Library throws her into the heart of a dangerous mystery – and into the path of the enigmatic vampire and geneticist, Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode), who hides a dark family secret. As Diana and Matthew embark on a journey to understand the secrets of the ancient manuscript, their relationship develops, and events threaten to unravel the fragile peace that has long existed between witches, vampires, daemons and humans. Alex Kingston plays Sarah Bishop – Diana’s aunt, Valarie Pettiford plays her partner Emily Mather, and Owen Teale plays Peter Knox, a member of the Congregation. “A Discovery of Witches” was adapted for screen by writer Kate Brooke (“Mr. Selfridge”). Co-founder of Bad Wolf, Jane Tranter is the executive producer and Juan Carlos Medina (“Painless”) directs.

Midland rolled into Boots & Hearts for the second year in a row, this time, hitting the main stage to put on a show for their Canadian Midlanderos.
The boys played 12 songs in their return to Boots & Hearts, and there wasn’t a single one of them that didn’t have fans singing along. The crowd got loud, they danced, and they lit ‘em up. They had a whole lot of fun doing it as the Saturday afternoon sun beat down and the music played.
As one of the most successful new acts in country music over the last few years. Their rise to stardom seemed to come quickly, and it did, but it wasn’t a foregone conclusion. We had a chance to talk to Midland backstage before their show and asked them about their journey from their pre-EP Spotify sessions at SXSW to their first #1, their album release (On The Rocks), and now a Platinum single (Drinkin’ Problem) on their resume.
We asked the band if they had words to describe their journey over the last two years and Mark Wystrach told us, “At this point, grateful because the road has been a lot of fun and as you realize your dreams it’s great, but it’s not an easy road.” He added, “When we finish this year it will be two years of the hardest touring, recording, working that we’ve ever done in our lives.”.
The rest of 2018, the end of that two-year run, is packed with live dates. They’ve got some festivals and state fairs lined up, and then they line up with Thomas Rhett on the Life Changes Tour. After that, they kick off their own run of shows on The Electric Rodeo Tour. Oh, and in the middle of that, they’ll head across the pond to play shows in the UK and Ireland.
It’s going to be busy. But fun.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
On stage, Mark, Cameron, and Jess are top tier entertainers. Their music fits their personalities on stage. Their choice of covers connects with the audience and meshes well in their set.
Add their well-oiled harmonies to the mix, and it’s easy to see why people are in on Midland, and why it’s easy to bet on them having a successful future.
That future, btw, includes a brand new album that we can’t wait to hear. But wait we will, because Mark told us at the end of our interview that it’s not coming out until March 2019.
We told him folks will be marking that on their calendars.
Until then, go back and listen to On The Rocks, check out those old Spotify sessions from SXSW 2016, and their new Spotify Singles releases, Burn Out and a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Tougher Than The Rest recorded at Sound Stage Studios Nashville.
The boys were funny, charming, easy-going, and made us wish we had about an hour longer to hang out, something to drink, something for the boys to smoke, and some barbeque. Next time.
Check out the full (3:30 minute) interview now!
We’re not sure when we’ll get the chance to see Midland up on stage next, but we’re hoping that it isn’t long. Especially if they give us the kind of show they gave thousands of us at Boots & Hearts.

I had zero child rearing experience before I had one of my own. Children were sticky little loud things I tried to avoid. I don’t know where I got my lofty ideas of how children should act, but I now understand that I was wrong about everything. I feel like I owe so many women an apology. After having a child of my own, I feel like I’ve walked a mile in another woman’s nursing bra. I get it now. I was such a judgey a-hole.
1. To the one who quit her successful career to be a stay-at-home mom. I’m sorry I rolled my eyes. Said it was sad to see you throw it all away after working so hard. Said I’d never do something like that. And now that’s me. I finally understand you weren’t actually throwing anything away, and gaining so much more.
2. To the woman who’s baby wouldn’t stop crying and she had to leave the restaurant. The one I gave the stink-eye to, like how dare she pollute my environment with her noisy child. And then it was me, feeling embarrassed and rushing out before even getting a sip of water. It’s happened more than once, and every time I remember being the one who was giving the dirty looks and what a total judgmental jerk I was being.
3. To the woman who’s kid had messy hair, a snotty nose and dirty hands and I wondered why she couldn’t take care of her kid properly. I’m sorry I ever questioned your mothering skills. My kid is usually barefoot, with shaggy hair and sticky hands. He’s happy and healthy and I just had no idea how messy, snotty and dirty kids can get in ten seconds, no matter how hard you try to keep them clean.
4. To the woman who’s kid isn’t talking/walking/potty trained by some magic age. There is no magic age. They’ll do it when they are ready and not a moment before that. I’m sorry I ever questioned any child’s progress. I’m now cursed to spend my days repeating “pee and poo go in the potty” because my 3-year-old son just doesn’t want to give up his diapers, while my mom likes to remind me I was potty trained at two.
5. To the woman who asked her kid to do something five times before they did it and I wondered why the hell her kids don’t listen. Now I have to ask my kid ten times and he may or may not do what I ask. Sometimes he goes out of his way to do the complete opposite. Guess that’s just a little payback for all those times I questioned someone’s disciplinary skills.
To all these women and many more, I’m sorry for judging things I knew nothing about. Nothing has changed me more and opened my eyes like the experience of raising a child. Now when I see a screaming tantrum, I smile and nod, while inwardly thanking God it isn’t me this time. The only thing I know for certain about kids is that they are unpredictable and they are all different. And what I know for certain about moms is we are all just trying our best to keep them safe, happy and healthy and the last thing we need is judgement from friends, family or strangers. We are all just making it work, in our own way, and that happens to be the best way possible. And they are worth every bit!
5 Women I Need to Apologize To I had zero child rearing experience before I had one of my own. Children were sticky little loud things I tried to avoid.

Now regardless what brand we’re talking about: there’s always this sweet spot. The place where price and quality meet in the right proportions. When the Umidigi Z Pro was launched, it was far from this sweet spot. In fact, eventhough it had a fast processor and two decent camera sensors built in it was a dissaster!
And it was a dissaster happening at anything but a convenient time. His predecessor the UMi Z was just getting horrible press due to swollen batteries, an OTA software update that led the phone to brick completely and the always absent customer support of UMi/ Umidigi. In short: Not a good year for the UMi Company.
In fact one might come to the conclusion it was such a bad year that they even decided to rebrand. The name Umidigi appeared and with it the newest (or first so you will) Umidigi “flagship” the Umidigi Z Pro. Launched just a couple of months after the UMi Z, there was hardly any change to notice from the outside. Except the UMi Z made it look like it had two rear camera’s when in fact one of the two was the (tremendously failing) laser focus lens. The Z Pro came with two actual rear camera’s. In fact it sports the very decent Sony IMX258 sensors which have known to produce stunning results…
But sadly, in other brands phones! Because the Umidigi software buffs and engineers somehow didn’t manage to produce similar quality pictures and videos. However it might have been, considering the high quality camera sensors, the Mediatek Helio X27 (one of the fastest processors out there those days) and the 4000 mAh battery Umidigi dubbed the Z Pro their latest “flagship” and slapped a price-tag between 250 to 275 euro on the device. Since they were obviously in a hurry to rebrand, the Z Pro had to launch quickly, thus leaving an entire first generation customers to be beta-testers. Paying beta-testers even!
So much for the history of the Umidigi Z Pro. Now, like I said in the very beginning there is this sweet spot, when price and what you get for it are just in the right proportion. Well since Umidigi is launching a new “flagship” like every forthnight these days there has been a price drop. This means you can order the Umidigi Z Pro for anywhere between 129 and 150 euro now. But wait a minute? Why would I want to buy a bugprone phone that had the worst of press even if its half the original price now? If that’s the question you’re about to ask then read on. I will try to explain:
First let’s address some of the complaints about the original, first batch of Umidigi Z Pro phones. The battery life was terrible 3.5 to 4 hrs SoT, even though it was packing a 4000mAh battery. The camera had focus issues, and some customers were only able to use the monochrome camera if the wanted to shoot anything besides macro shots. It wasn’t able to view HD YouTube or Netflix feeds, which even last year, was rather sad. And the fingerprint scanner would respond randomly if at all. And ofcourse many cases of freezing. When we look at this severe list of problems we can conclude two things. The first obviously being the fact this phone should in NO WAY have been released already. And secondly: Given the quality of materials used (Sony Camera, Samsung RAM etc etc) and the mentioned list one can conclude the problem is in the software!
And this is the good news! Simply because most of those things can be fixed with software updates. And they did! Now let’s jump to 2018 and find that as soon as you start the phone up it offers you several OTA updates. Now truth be told it’s always a feeling like russian roulette to agree to an Umidigi update, but in the case of the Z Pro they were actually useful, and working flawlessly! So now, we have this light aluminium gun greyish body. A beautiful 2.5D screen with an oleophobic layer that’s running on Android 7.1, and that immediately impoved the battery life. So now it’s actually useable. Which is nice. They also improved the performance of the camera and some other bugs and glitches have been taken care of. So now, is it a perfect phone?
No, it’s not, but it’s a decent phone for a 140 euro price and it comes in this cool metal box, with this cool red charger cable. It’s got an iPhone 7 Plus/ OnePlus 5 vibe going on, and you can tell all your buddies your phone has a tencore chip. It might sound sarcastic and ofcourse I am, but truth is every thing looks slick and well build. The problem here was and remains the software. That being said with the updates installed, the Umidigi Z Pro is a pretty decent phone at it’s price. It runs on a Helio X27 decacore processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. Yet it’s impossible to get over 96K on the AnTuTu benchmark out of it.
Thanks to the update to Android Nougat the fingerprint scanner is flawless and fast and it’s able to hold the charge for 5 to 6 hours which again, is not what you would expect of a 4000mAh battery. But it’s almost twice as long as before the update, so definitely an improvement. Gaming is no problem on the Umidigi Z Pro and it can handle most of the games without any graphical problems. What I did notice though was the temperature of the phone is constantly very high. This hasn’t lead to any problems in the two weeks I used it. Maybe it can be related to the placement of the chipset.
Then, there is the camera. It certainly has improved after the update, but it still has some flaws too. Flaws that I personally would find inexcuseable in a 250-buck-flagship-phone, but are perfectly willing to deal with at a 130-140 euro price tag. The two main cons I consider to be the low light performance, that is … basically absent. Which might not sound like a big deal since a lot oof budget phones have trouble in low light. But here’s the thing: A) devices are getting better and anno 2018 even (some) low budget phones can shoot decent footage in the dark. And B) These phone don’t have a build-in camera option named “SUPER NIGHT MODE”. Correct me if I’m wrong, but that sounds promising. But the results are just migraine inducing, look at these examples:
These pics are supposed to be shot in “Super Night Mode” You judge….
Another thing on the camera of the Umidigi Z Pro is the dynamic range. At moments it’s perfectly on top of things. Yet shoot a second picture just seconds later and it’s a proper mess. Another equally mysterious phenomenon is the bokeh- or portrait mode. In one picture it seperates subject from the background just perfectly, the next shot is a mess again. Luckily it has an option to refocus after the shot has been taken. This can make up for some of the software’s mistakes, but sometimes even refocussing won’t help you out. Let me show you some “highlights” of dual camera missers:
Here you can see the camera struggling. Dynamic range is not the best
Some examples of bokeh software not knowing what to do
So, what you are saying it’s an okay  phone for it’s price that’s well build, it just doesn’t have a good camera…right? Well… No. See and this is what did my head in reviewing this smartphone, it is able to shoot some incredible looking pictures. The monochrome mode is just stunning, and I was able to make some lovely shots with it. If the conditions are right it’s a great camera. Just make sure you’re always making more than one picture of whatever you want to save. It has a zoom-option that also is great to use. The shutter speed is absolutely fantastic and I was able to catch my kids jumping in mid-air on several occassions. So no complaints there.
Lovely Monochrome shot
Okay portait shot
And even a good one
But as soon as the lights go low, you might as well forget you’re even carrying a camera. Unless your using the flash you can forget anything will turn out other than grainy and blurry. Video camera, same problems. The colours, the sharpness..everything looks great, but there’s no continuous auto focus meaning you have to tap the screen every time you move. And it lacks any form of stabilisation, so better not breathe or footage will be shaky. If you dont move and have steady hands however, the camera shoots lovely pictures. So you see my problem here? For every pro there is a con and the other way around. And that goes for everything. No joke.
Take the speaker, volume is way above average, great in a noisy environment, unfortunately the sound quality is below mediocre. The fast charger is a fast charger, yet it charges other 4000mAh phones FASTER than the phone it came with: The Umidigi Z Pro. That being said, it charges fast enough to not be annoying, but you know, it’s all those little tiny things together that still make me not sure. One thing I am sure of is the price drop was a great move and much more fitting to the phone. Would I recommend it? That depends on who’s asking. Are you not a heavy use but1.) still want a phone that has a good build and is not too slow? 2.) looking for a good, modern looking phone in the iPhone/OnePlus-look  The Umidigi Z Pro might be a great phone for you.
If however you are a heavy user and want more than a 50-60% succes rate when taking pictures, you might want to skip the Umidigi Z Pro altogether. After all  heavy use and a relatively fast heating chip usually aren’t the best of friends in the long end. Just consider the fact you might also get a Meizu M6S or a Nubia M2 for the same price, those might be better alternatives.  As always I conclude with some picture samples shot on the Umidigi Z Pro. Enjoy.
The Umidigi Z Pro: Failing Flagship to decent Budget Phone Now regardless what brand we're talking about: there's always this sweet spot. The place where price and quality meet in the right proportions.

We all know how wonderful it feels when we get a great night’s sleep, we wake full of energy and ready to take on the world! Despite all of us knowing how good sleep is for us, it seems less of us are getting enough of the good stuff, and our health is suffering as a result. One of the biggest causes of missed sleep is stress. We flick off the lights and lay our head on our nice soft pillow, but instead of drifting off to the land of nod the little voice in our head begins to list all the worries we have for the following day.
  [mailerlite_form form_id=19]
Stress and sleep are strange bedfellows. The more stressed we are, the less likely we are to sleep well. But then the worst we sleep the more likely we are to develop anxiety, stress and even depression. A cruel cycle indeed; it’s all quite unfair! What can be done to break this cycle? Well, below I’m going to let you in my top tips on how to get more sleep and reduce your stress levels.
This post was written by Sarah, view bio below.
    Get into A Routine
Regularity is probably the most important thing anyone can do to help improve their sleep. The human mind craves routine. Doing the same thing at the same time helps the brain build associations and with its shortcuts.
Go to bed at the same time every day, get up at the same time. Whether it is the weekday or the weekend, try and keep to the same time. Note, your body doesn’t care about weekends, Saturday is nothing more than a social construct. You will soon find your brain knows what time sleep should be and will start to prepare for it.
The same principle lays behind a having a good pre-bed wind-down routine. Avoiding screens in the hour before bed will help your overstimulated brain slow down. Replacing any activity that involves even the remotest possibility of stress with low key, relaxing things instead will do wonders.
  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
So, that means no more tax returns, flight booking or attempting to help your son with their math homework before bed. Instead, why not slow down, read a book, listen to some music, or even take a nice hot bath.
For other ideas on what makes a great pre-bed routine, plus a host of other tips on how to improve your odds of a good night’s kip, check out the Sleep Advisor blogroll.
    Take A Nice Hot Bath
Speaking of baths, AH! What is more relaxing than soaking into the bubbles and having a nice long bath before bed? A lot of people swear by it, Oprah Winfrey for one. If it is good enough for the queen of daytime, it’s good enough for us!
Pre-bed bath enthusiasts often claim it’s the toasty warmth of a good soak that lulls them to sleep. Well, they are partially right. Having a hot bath before bed is great for inducing sleepy times but not for the reason they think.
When you have a hot bath, a process known as vasodilation takes place, this is where the blood rushes to the skin. Hence why you get rosy cheeks. When you then step out of your nice warm bath all this heat at the surface of your body is transferred to the cold air around, and you experience a massive thermal dump, and your core temperature plummets. It’s this cooling effect that is incredibly soporific.
Having a hot bath, or an ice-cold shower will have a similar impact. It’s just a hot bath is a far more pleasurable experience. Both are ways to help you de-stress at the end of a long day and get your body and mind in a good place for sleep time.
    Calm That Monkey Mind
One method to calm that chattering voice in your head at night is to take up a little meditation. And no, before you ask, meditation is not just for monks and hippies. Though, these two groups do seem pretty relaxed!
Everyone can benefit from the effects of a little meditation. It’s free and requires nothing but a place to sit. To genuinely feel the benefit it does, however, require the commitment of at least 15 minutes each day.
It might sound dramatic but meditation over time essentially works by reprogramming our brain.
I know that sounds outlandish, the brain scans substantiate such claims.
  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Daily sessions of simply sitting and observing whatever images and ideas that float through our mind’s eye, help us realize how futile it is to worry about every little thought. This helps to free us from negative patterns of thoughts, reduce anxieties and de-stress. Find a quiet corner and give it a go.
Well there you go – three simple and completely free (if you don’t count bath salts) ways reduce your stress levels and help improve your odds of a great night’s rest. A little unsure, well, why not give them a whirl. What’s the worst thing that can happen? You miss a bit of sleep!

Hi there, my name’s Sarah, and I’m a sleep addict. I simply can’t get enough of the good stuff. When I’m not lying in bed dreaming (mainly of Chris Hemsworth) I spend the better part of every day researching and writing about sleep. I genuinely believe the world would be a happy, healthier, and even safer place to live if we all took sleep a little bit more seriously. Sweet dreams!

My husband and I travel A LOT. We both have different ideas of what makes a good piece of luggage, though. So, when I had the opportunity to check out Standard’s Carry-on backpack, I thought it would be a good idea to have both of us try it out and really give a thorough review of this carry-on luggage!
This may not mean much to those of you who don’t know him personally…but my husband is also the pickiest, most critical product reviewer that there is. He generally finds flaws with products, that most people will never notice. This is especially true for his carry-on luggage. (Anyone who knows him personally is probably surprised I even let him in on this product review, haha.)
Our Differences as Travelers
Me
Typically, when I’m traveling with my carry-on luggage, my biggest concern is how to protect my camera equipment and bring along my 17-inch laptop for photo editing…and of course, having enough space for my clothing. Bonus points if it looks stylish as well! I’m usually using it for long international journeys, and want to be able to fit as much stuff in at as possible. I’m not terribly picky about my luggage.
My husband
However, my husband is a business traveler. Before we moved to Moscow, he was jumping on a plane early Monday morning to get to work and then flying out late Thursday to come back home. His biggest concern is being as organized as possible (he wants all the pockets and organization compartments to make him as efficient as possible). It’s also really important for him to not have to gate check his bag. When we fly out of our regional airport in Appleton, a typical carry-on bag gets gate checked because it won’t fit in the overhead compartment. You may wait 10 more minutes to get your bag when you reach Chicago, then – this could make or break my husband’s Monday morning connection flight. Therefore, he needs a bag that can fit in the overhead compartment on the small, regional planes. He is VERY picky about his luggage.
*Side note – we did totally match on this travel day. Dork alert!
What’s So Special About Standard’s Carry-on Backpack?
youtube
Before we get into what my husband and I think of this bag, the video above does a great job of explaining what sets this Standard Luggage bag apart from other carry-on bags out there. (It’s a quick and to the point video – don’t worry!) This bag really has all of the bells and whistles!
It’s a 3-in-1 travel backpack, suitcase, and shoulder bag. It has hideaway backpack straps, a full perimeter zip, hip-belt, and a dedicated laptop sleeve. You can even change the orange zip pulls on the bags to blue. It also has a roll-aboard strap, water bottle pocket, lockable zips, smart organization compartments….plus, it comes with a safety whistle and rain cover.
Our Review of Standard’s Carry-on Backpack
The day these pictures were taken for this post, we were traveling between our home in Wisconsin and our temporary home in Moscow, Russia. This is an 18-hour journey on average for us. My husband was the one who packed the bag this day and carried it through all the airports. (Appleton, Wisconsin to Chicago to Frankfurt, Germany to Moscow, Russia.)
I took my turn with it when I went to St. Petersburg via the bullet train for a long weekend with my college roommate! (She came to visit us right after we got back to Moscow. That’s why things have been so quiet around here. We were busy touring St. Petersburg and Moscow together.)
*We both preferred using it as a backpack for these trips.
My Thoughts on the Bag
Wow! This is the first bag that I’ve ever needed to read the instruction manual in order to use it! Haha. There are so many different features – it’s incredible!
Pros:
*The Organization – I am a really disorganized person (just ask my husband). However, this bag forces me to put some thought into my packing vs. just shoving it all in the bag and calling it good. There’s a compartment and slot for everything!
*The Ergonomics – The older you get, the more you care about this one! Hauling a bag for a day of traveling in my 30s has to be comfortable. And I was shocked by how comfortable this bag was to carry – even with all my clothing, toiletries & my bulky laptop! It’s just as good as our hiking backpacks.
*The Details – There is so much thought put into this bag, it’s unreal. I can even change out the colors on the bag to better suit my style! (My husband prefers the orange, and I prefer the blue bag tags.)
You can change the coloring right down to the little “Standard” tag on the front!
*It Fits My 17-inch Laptop – When I bought my laptop over 3 years ago, I had initially thought I would be doing more video editing than I actually do. So, I got a great big gaming laptop – that works wonderfully, but it is an absolute PAIN to travel with. Fortunately, this bag fits it comfortably, and it even has a nice little sleeve to protect it!
I love this sleeve for my huge laptop!
Cons:
I honestly don’t have anything negative to say about the bag itself. However, I do have a few points to bring up just from my personal preferences – which I understand are not a problem for the average traveler.
*Camera equipment – Don’t get me wrong, I understand that I am getting really nitpicky here. But, when I’m traveling, I’m usually traveling somewhere to take photos, and I need to bring my camera and 2-3 heavy lenses. I can fit my camera in this bag, but it’s not the ideal situation. I carried a separate bag with my camera + lenses in it. So, it’s difficult for this to be the only bag I take for an international journey.
*Backpacks can get warm – I am a sweaty disgusting person when I’m traveling. Backpacks tend to exasperate this. I have to say, though, this backpack does breathe REALLY well in comparison to any I’ve used in the past, but I do still get a little warm while using. (But I get warm rolling my luggage on wheels too…so, there’s that.)
My Husband’s Thoughts on the Bag
Seriously, when he started packing this bag and realizing all of the features it had…he hollered to me from the bedroom, “This bag is so F’ing COOL!” I then proceeded to drop my coffee cup and faint. Alright, I might be exaggerating on that last part…but my husband’s reaction is true! And again, in the 6+ years we have been married, I can only recall a few instances where he was genuinely excited about a product.
Pros
All of the Options! My husband LOVES that this bag comes with so many different options and things to try. He really loves that he can use it as a backpack for running through the airport, and then easily convert it into a shoulder bag once he gets to the office. (He typically goes straight from the airport to the office Monday mornings.)
It Fits on a Regional Jet – He doesn’t have to gate check this bag when using it. And because it’s a backpack, no one ever questions him about taking it on a regional jet. (Note – if you pack this bag full and use its expansion zipper, it won’t fit then. This is something I tend to do, though…not my husband!) This will likely come in handy, too, when we’re traveling with airlines that make you weigh your carry-on bags – our experience with this is your backpacks never get weighed. So, pack that baby full!
ORGANIZATION – Again, my husband loves to be organized. And this bag more than satisfies his need for everything to have its place!
Quality – He is constantly remarking how well-made this bag is. This is incredible, as I can’t remember the last time he told me he thought something was well-made.
Comfort – My husband’s journey with this bag was a lot longer than mine, and he was still pleased with how comfortable this bag is…even after an 18-hour journey with it.
The Rain Cover – Not that it’s even really needed, as this bag is water resistant…but my husband was very impressed that this bag also came with a rain cover. (He’s all about being prepared for the worst case scenarios!)
Cons
NONE. You read that right. NONE. I even have written proof of me confirming that he had nothing negative to say about this bag… if anyone wants to see it! Again, I realize this will mean more to people who know my husband personally. However, I hope I’ve emphasized how picky my husband is about products – especially travel products – so, for it to have his seal of approval is a big deal! He’s already dropping hints that he wants to use it when we go to Egypt and Jordan in a couple weeks…and he’s already asked if he can use it once he has to go back to his Monday-Thursday travel schedule for work. He really loves how well-suited this bag is for a business traveler.
*Click here to check out the Standard Luggage website, and click here to shop their carry-on backpack.
I’m curious, would you ever be interested in a carry-on bag like this? And for those of you who know my husband, how shocked are you that he has NOTHING negative to say about this bag? Let me know in the comments!

Visiting St. Petersburg, Russia in wintertime is a magical experience. You just have to be sure to bring some VERY warm clothes and adjust your itinerary accordingly. Certain famous attractions, like the Peterhof fountains, will be drained…and taking a canal ride? Yeah, that’s not happening. But don’t let that deter you – the beautiful, winter wonderland more than makes up for it, and perhaps you could replace that canal ride with a horse-drawn sleigh ride? (Yes, please!)
Now, two days means you are going to have to run to see all the highlights this beautiful city has to offer – but it is doable! As always, if you can afford more time, take it…but if you’re like us, two days may be all that you have to spare. This itinerary is meant for people who want to see the main attractions, but have a very limited timeframe.
Itinerary – 2 Days in St. Petersburg During the Winter
*Day 1 – Visit the State Hermitage Museum + St. Petersburg’s Most Important Cathedrals
The State Hermitage Museum
There are over 3 million exhibits within the Hermitage! (Including the famous “Peacock Clock.”)
Seeing St. Petersburg’s impressive cathedrals, as well as its awe-inspiring Hermitage Museum, are an absolute must! The Hermitage is home to 3 million works of art and is one of the most impressive museums I’ve ever toured. (Click here for more information on how to visit the State Hermitage Museum.)
St. Petersburg’s Main Cathedrals
Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood
It is possible to tour 3 – 5 cathedrals in St. Petersburg in one day + the Hermitage – if you move very quickly. You could see The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, Peter and Paul Cathedral and Kazan Cathedral. We made it to 4, but if I would’ve had a little more ambitious (read: woke up earlier), we could’ve made it to 5. (Click here to learn more about visiting these cathedrals.)
There are a couple things worth noting when planning your itinerary. In winter, there is not much daylight in St. Petersburg. It didn’t begin getting light out until nearly 10 am. Also, the vast majority of the places I’m suggesting are open from 10 am – 6 pm. At the time I’m writing this (February 2019), there are 2 exceptions to this – The Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan & St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral both open at 7 am. You could begin at St. Nicholas, then go to Our Lady of Kazan then head to St. Isaac’s Cathedral and so on. You would have to spend less than 1 hour at each cathedral and a maximum of 3 hours at The Hermitage, though.
St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral
The view from out hotel room
Peter and Paul Cathedral
*Day 2 – Catherine Palace + Pavlovsk Palace + Feodorovskiy Gosudarev Cathedral
For day 2, you’ll be heading outside to the suburbs of Pavlovsk & Pushkin. I suggest beginning with Pavlovsk Palace and then going to Catherine’s Palace. (You can click here to read more about these logistics.)
Pavlovsk Palace
Pavlovsk Palace
Pavlovsk Palace was honestly my favorite part of this trip. I loved it, not only because of its breathtaking beauty and history, but because it is SO quiet. There weren’t hordes of tourists here vying for the perfect photo. I also loved wandering the grounds and seeing the horse-drawn sleighs. It felt as though I were in a fairytale. (Click here for more information about visiting Pavlovsk Palace.)
Catherine Palace
Catherine Palace
Catherine Palace is likely the most recognizable attraction on this list. Everyone wants to see this golden wonder. There are more than 200 pounds of gold decorating the inside of Catherine Palace + it’s home to the famous “Amber Room.” (Click here to learn more about visiting Catherine Palace.)
Feodorovskiy Gosudarev Cathedral
Feodorovskiy Gosudarev Cathedral
If you have the time, Feodorovskiy Gosudarev Cathedral is within a 10-15 minute drive of Catherine Palace. It is a very beautiful and quiet cathedral. Unlike the rest of the cathedrals, you’ll find in St. Petersburg, this one will hardly have any people visiting it – but it is still equally beautiful, inside and out.
More Tips for Visiting St. Petersburg During the Winter
Take This Tour
If you want to see all of these things but don’t want to figure out the logistics yourself – I highly recommend taking this two-day tour and asking for Eugenia as your guide and Igor as your driver. You will have the best tour of your life then!
Transport – Take the Subway as Often as Possible!
The subway in St. Petersburg can be a tour in and of itself! (See the gallery, below.) It’s incredibly beautiful and many signs are English friendly. Plus, you won’t want to walk everywhere in the snow and cold.
*Note: Uber & Gett Taxi apps will work in St. Petersburg. Use them if you want to take a cab.
Inside the St. Petersburg Metro
Transport – St. Petersburg to Moscow
The Sapsan Bullet Train
The Sapsan Bullet Train
These photos I took on the Sapsan Bullet Train
If you’re coming from Moscow or heading to Moscow next, taking the train is the best bet. This website will explain all the different trains you can take. However, if you’re looking to get there the quickest way possible, take either the Sapsan bullet train or the Nevsky Express Train. Things to note:
Both trains cost almost the same.
The Sapsan is new and comfortable. It’s akin to riding business class on an airplane. The Nevsky is pretty old and bumpy.
Both trains include a meal…However, the Nevsky will try to up sell you a cup of tea for a small sum of cash, whereas tea is included on the Sapsan.
So, why would you ride the Nevsky instead of the Sapsan? We did it just because it was the most convenient time available for when we were traveling. But, if you have a choice – the Sapsan is a WAY better experience. (I just thought it was worth noting that the Sapsan is not your only train option for 4 hours or less, if you can’t get the time you want for the Sapsan.)
Where to Stay
The view from out hotel room
I can’t attest for every hotel in St. Petersburg, but we stayed at the Renaissance Baltic Hotel because we were able to use our Marriott vouchers there. It was a fantastic hotel with a really good breakfast spread. It was centrally located…I mean, we could see St. Isaac’s Cathedral from our hotel room window. The staff was very friendly as well.
If you’re a Marriott Elite snob like us, though, don’t expect your status to mean much to the Renaissance Baltic Hotel. You can book using your points & vouchers here, but there’s a good chance you won’t get your free upgrades, free breakfast, points for checking in online, etc. unless you throw a little hissy fit. (Or just avoid throwing said hissy fit and reach out directly to Marriott – they’ll make sure you get all of these things.)
Booking.com (function(d, sc, u) { var s = d.createElement(sc), p = d.getElementsByTagName(sc)[0]; s.type = 'text/javascript'; s.async = true; s.src = u + '?v=' + (+new Date()); p.parentNode.insertBefore(s,p); })(document, 'script', '//aff.bstatic.com/static/affiliate_base/js/flexiproduct.js');
