Nate the Bee's Friends!
Nate loves every one of his new neighbours in Home, but he has a different kind of relationship with each neighbour. After all, each of them is so unique! It makes sense they'd be loved for different things...so here's a list!
Eddie Dear is another favourite friend of Nate's. Nate loves the gentle, clumsy goofball of a neighbour. As a bee from France, Nate is also enamoured with Eddie's southern accent. Nate is always encouraging Eddie to get along with their grumpy neighbour, Frank, although it usually backfires on both of them. Nate calls Eddie "Monsieur Dear", although will also sometimes just call him "Dear One".
Barnaby B. Beagle is one of Nate's favourite friends! As Nate says, "a good baker always has a pun in the oven"! Together, the two make jokes and goofs and gaffs all day long. They also joke about how their middle initials are the same! The only difference between them is that Barnaby likes to poke friendly fun at his neighbours while Nate tends to shy away from teasing. Nate doesn't want to make anyone upset! But don't worry, Nate isn't a spoil sport...he doesn't mind when Barnaby makes fun of him! Except when it's in front of a particular, very handsome caterpillar... Nate calls Barnaby "Monsieur Beagle", although sometimes calls him "Le Chien Bleu".
Poppy Patridge is probably Nate's second favourite neighbour. Nate loves to come over to Poppy's place to bake, knit, drink tea, and relax. Nate is usually a very excitable loud bee, always buzzing about. Around Poppy, however, he stays calm and quiet so as not to alarm his large bird friend. Nate calls Poppy "Madame Partridge".
Frank Frankly doesn't seem like the kind of fellow that Nate would adore, but au contraire mon a-bee, Frank is the kind of person Nate enjoys quite a lot! While Frank may seem like a grumpy gus, Nate knows he opens up when he cares about something. And Nate cares about him! Nate is always complimenting Frank's gelatin creations (even if they're not to be eaten), and they're always hanging out in Frank's garden. Nate is also fond of listening to Frank talk about various insects, especially the moths and butterflies. Nate thinks that, if he hadn't been born a bee, he would have likes to be a rosy maple moth instead. Nate calls Frank "Monsieur Frankly".
Julie Joyful, surprisingly, is the neighbour Nate hangs out with the least. It isn't that Nate doesn't care for her. He adores Julie's creativity, her energy, and her up-beat attitude. It's just that she's so destructive and loud sometimes that Nate becomes overwhelmed! He was quite scared and shocked the first time they played pretend and it ended with Julie wailing and knocking things over as part of their playtime. A bee like Nathan is energetic enough as it is. Both of them together can be a little too much... Nate calls Julie "Mademoiselle Joyful".
Sally Starlet is another one of Nate's favourite neighbours, especially because she knows a little French. Sally sometimes asks Poppy and Nate to create confections for use as onstage props...although to Nate's dismay, they never end up eaten. Nate, however, is always willing to take part in a play, especially if the role is musical. Most often, Nate plays a friendly face onstage, but occasionally he makes a particularly enthusiastic villain! Nate calls Sally "Madame Starlet", a name Sally is very fond of.
Howdy Pillar is Nate's favourite neighbour. It's not because they're both buggy business owners who enjoy jokes, although he sees the similarities. No...it's because Nate has a crush on him! Nate is always buying baking supplies from Howdy's store, and he always orders a strawberry soda when he stops in. He likes to sit and drink his soda as he watches Howdy and Barnaby tell stories...although Nate is barely listening. He blushes very hard when Barnaby teases him, though Howdy is oblivious to Nate's fuzzy-buzzy affections. Nate calls him "Monsieur Pillar", or sometimes, "Ma chenille".
Wally Darling is a friend Nate is very fond of. Nate is always buzzing with excitement when Wally visits the bakery with one of their many friends! Nate is particularly proud of Wally's ability to show affection, especially his blown kisses! It's clear to Nate that Wally loves each of his neighbours very much, and Nate loves Wally right back! Nate knows that Wally takes some time to tell stories, and that even though his voice isn't very expressionate, Wally means every word of what he says, so Nate waits patiently and gives Wally his undivided attention. Nate calls Wally "Monsieur Darling".
Home is the neighbour Nate is the most curious about. He didn't know homes could be alive! The closest he's come to this concept is living in a hive! But not to worry, Nate's confusion doesn't get in the way of his love for him big, boxy neighbour. Nate will often leave sweet treats at Home's doorstep, free of charge (after all, it would be hard for a house to give a hug or blow a kiss! And Nate can never quite understand Home's jokes without someone there to translate). Nate calls Home "Monsieur House".

Originally I was going to explain myself in the tags but then I realized I have so much to say that I don't want it to just be hidden in the tags. I am so sorry I left a wall of text on your art post, I wrote this faster than I'd write an essay that's half as long what is wrong with me.
I also think that if anyone is going to end up aware-- not counting Wally-- it's going to be Frank. The website mentions his intelligence several times. If he's a smart, neat, organized, logical thinker, then surely he's be one of the first to figure out something is wrong in the neighborhood.
There's also that old picture of Frank, where he's surrounded by pieces of his body while hands that aren't his hold a red envelope in front of him. If that shocked face doesn't look like the face of someone who's just found out something horrible , I don't know what else it could be.
I also remember seeing a video(I think on TikTok) talking about how Sunny was meant to be the protagonist who would save everyone, but Clown didn't like how he had such heroic traits: he's cheery, kind, friendly, has good morals, and is, well, sunny. The video mentioned how the character meant to be Sunny's opposite was Frank, and how it would make sense if Frank was the hero instead.
To me, that makes absolute, perfect sense. Frank is portrayed as this grumpy, grouchy character who doesn't like Barnaby's jokes and frowns all the time. However, from the audios we've heard, he doesn't seem that bad, actually. Sure, he gets annoyed easily, but when he's with Poppy, he makes an effort to reassure her when she doubts her cooking, with Julie, he plays her games and loves her jokes, and with Eddie, he tries to ease the mailman's fears of the beetle.
Despite being a little cranky from time to time, I believe Frank has a good heart. He seems like the kind that would have a very strong, fair moral code and wouldn't let anything unjust happen. I think that if he started realizing something was wrong with the neighborhood, he would try to fix it in anyway he could. He would do anything in his power to protect his friends.
Speaking of his friends, am I imagining the coldness between Frank and Wally?
I'm definitely your average "victim Wally, evil Home" enjoyer, but when the audios came out, I just couldn't ignore Frank and Wally's strange treatment of eachother. At 2:23 in "Eddie's Big Lift", Wally starts greeting everyone. "Hi Julie, hi Sally, hi Frank, hi Eddie." maybe I'm just imagining it, but the way he says "Frank" sounds low and irked, like he's not exactly excited to see Frank. Even if I'm just imagining that, I'm definitely not imagining what Frank says to Wally in "Just So". At 2:33, Frank and Julie are talking, when suddenly, they get a knock at the door. Julie answers it, and Wally is there. Wally states that Home wanted to play croquet with them, and Frank says he doesn't see why not. Wally answers "Oh, swell." And then goes silent. It's silence for a long moment, before Frank-- sounding slightly irritated-- asks "Is there something else, Wally?" While you could argue that maybe Frank is acting like this becuase he's Frank, at the same time, Frank really actually doesn't seem as rude as they make him out to be. If Wally really is just the friendliest neighbor in the neighborhood, why would Frank seem slightly uncomfortable in Wally's presence?
Even though I love Wally dearly-- all of the neighbors dearly, for that matter-- there still seems to be something that's making Frank act this way towards him. Maybe I'm just overanalyzing, maybe I'm on to something. I want to know what other people think.
TL;DR:
Frank is grumpy but seems logical enough to see that something is wrong in their fake little world, making him an interesting change form your cliche heroes. Also, him and Wally might have some subtle aggresion aimed towards each other but it might just be me.
Tumblr media
I'm sure he's fiiiine...
I like imagining Frank as one of the first characters that start questioning things, since he's described as the smartest and he's my absolute favourite. And maybe he accidentally gets Eddie also into trouble by confiding in him?

"It's-For-You!" Talking Telephone Toy
Ring... ring... ring... it's for you!
Transcripts below!
Eddie
[The phone rings once before it is picked up.]
Whether letter or parcel, whether rain, snow, or shine, we weather the weather and never decline! This is Eddie Dear of Eddieā€™s Post office speaking! How can I help you today?
[Silence.]
...Hello? Is anybody there? ...Should I say the jingle again? Okay-
[Eddie clears his throat.]
Whether letter or parcel, whether rain, snow, or shine, we weather the weather and never decline! This is Eddie Dear of Eddieā€™s Post office speaking! Do you need stamps? I got ā€˜em! Envelopes and paper? You bet! Markers, crayons, glue, glitter, tape, staples- [Takes a deep inhale to catch his breath.] I got that too!
[Silence.]
[Mumbling] ...Iā€™m starting to think nobodyā€™s thereā€¦ Waitā€¦ I canā€™t remember if the phone was ringingā€¦ Maybe I was going to make a phone call... But who would I call? Well, if youā€™re thereā€¦ Uhā€¦ Have a good day!
Barnaby
[The phone rings three times. Then it picks up.]
Hello? Hellooo?
[Silence.]
Is this a prank call, kid? Listen, I got a better joke for you- What did the bee say to the flower? I wouldnā€™t know, I wasnā€™t there! What do I look like, a BEEā€™s-dropper?
[Rimshot and horn honk. Barnaby laughs. Silence follows.]
ā€¦.Not even a chuckle? Boy, tough crowd! Hey, you canā€™t blame a guy forĀ phoningĀ it in! How about you call me back when you got something funny to say too, little buddy! Buh bye!
Howdy
[The phone is answered in the middle of the first ring.]
Youā€™re calling Howdyā€™s Place! The home of everything you need and everything you don't! Howdy Pillar at your service!
[Silence.]
...Hello? Hello! Listen, pal, time is jokes and if Iā€™m not laughing then I donā€™t have time! ...Actually, I do have plenty of time in stock, itā€™s in aisle two next to the bananas. ButĀ ā€¦I call ā€˜em cuckoo clocks!
[Howdy laughs at his own joke, but it becomes softer and more embarrassed as the silence follows.]
...Alright, alright! Youā€™re giving me nothing to work with, buddy! I only deal in funny business and it looks like youā€™re runninā€™ low, pal! So long! You get it? Like a caterpillar! Haha!
Poppy
[The phone rings twice before it is abruptly picked up.]
Hello, this is the Partridge nest- Or I mean, this is Poppy!
[Silence.]
ā€¦Hello? Dear? Are you there? I canā€™t hear you if youā€™re speaking! Maybe it is my connection- Oh my feathers, a telephone is so difficult to work with- So many buttons!
[The sounds of shuffling, squawks and noises of tutting can be heard.]
Oh my goodness! I- Oh no, Iā€™ve dropped the telephone on the ground I- Gracious me, thereā€™s birdseed everywhere! I- I will call you back, whoever this is! Oh- My feathers are full at the moment! Donā€™t worry about me! Have a pleasant day deary-
[A panicked squawk is heard followed by a loud thud. The phone call abruptly ends.]
Frank
[The phone rings once before itā€™s answered.]
Hello, this is Frank Frankly speaking.
[Silence.]
...Hello? ā€¦ Are you there?
[Silence.]
...Is this Julie? This had better not be another game youā€™re playing! ā€¦Oh no, is this a prank call? Is this Barnaby!? Well, I have a prank for you too, you jokester! A lesson!
[Frank clears his throat.]
Did you know butterflies have their own way of sleeping? Itā€™s not so much sleeping as it is having a rest ! It is always done with their eyes open, too! They also like to rest under leaves as a means of protection from dew or rain drops! Better yet, to hide from larger creatures with an appetite! A bit like you and those horrible hot dogs you love so much.
[Silence. Frank huffs loudly in annoyance.]
Well, whoever this is, Iā€™ll have you know I have better things to do than wait for you to respond! Good bye!
Sally
[The phone barely has a chance to ring once before it is picked up.]
Hellooo! Youā€™re talking to the brightest and most stupendous superstar this side of the neighborhood! Sally Starlet!
[A triumphant 'ta-da!' jingle, followed by silence. Sally whispers her next sentence.]
ā€¦I said ā€˜Hellooo!ā€™ Thatā€™s your cue!
[Silence.]
ā€¦Whatā€™s wrong, do you have stage fright? I know, I know, having a star for a neighbor can be so intimidating! Sheā€™s so terrific, youā€™re probably thinking! Phenomenal, staggering, breathtaking- Iā€™m taking the words right out of your mouth, I bet!
[Silence. Sally sighs softly.]
Well, parting is such sweet sorrows, but I must shine my brilliance elsewhere! Why donā€™t you call me back when you donā€™t have such cold feet, hm? Farewell!
Julie
[The phone rings once, but in the middle of its second ring the phone is answered.]
Hello? [LOUDER] Hello!!
[Silence.]
...Hey, are you playing some kind of game? Well- I want to play too! Okay, letā€™s go on the count of three! Oneā€¦ Twoā€¦ Three!
[Silence.]
ā€¦I donā€™t know how to play this game. ...Oh, I know what to do! Weā€™ll make a new game! [Frantically spoken] Weā€™ll need a jump rope, some chalk, a dice, a sandwich- Iā€™ll call itā€¦ quiet sandwich jump rope! I better get everything ready, Frankā€™s going to love this game! Okay, bye bye!
Wally
[A long period of silence follows before three rings are heard. A pause follows even as the phone is answered before the sound of a heart beat can be heard below the ambient noise. This audio track constantly raises and lowers as it proceeds.]
Hello? Hello? Helloooo? ā€¦ Ha Ha Ha...Iā€™m only kidding.Ā I know youā€™re there.
Did you like my joke? ...I think you were going to say...Ā Yes!Ā ā€¦Ha Ha Haā€¦ You knowā€¦ It is hard to hear you think through this funny phone of mine. It is as though you arenā€™t speaking at all. Maybe it is just a little fuzzyā€¦ Like me. Speaking ofā€¦
[The heart beat and ambience stop abruptly.]
...Do you know who I am?
[The heart beat and ambience resume.]
[Gasp.]Ā Oh no. Well thatā€™s not neighborly at all. Weā€™ve never met before. But donā€™t worry. Even though you and I havenā€™t spoken before, Iā€™ve seen you... Every time you have looked into my eyes. I want to knowā€¦ What did you see?
[Silence.]
I hope you saw a friend, but Iā€™m not sure you saw a name... Stand still. Letā€™s start over. Ring ring ring. Click. Hi, Iā€™mĀ Wally.Ā Iā€™m so happy to finally meet you, I think youā€™re the absolute most.
[Silence.]
Uh oh, I have to go now. Everyone is probably thinking about that strange phone call. It is funny to think about. ā€¦Ha ha haā€¦ Donā€™t worry though, neighbor, it will be a little joke between you and me. You have to go too. You have work to do. Remember, until you hear me again, keep your smile merry and always know that I love you very much.
Good bye.

What Happened To Bruiser
To ease your worries and give you a little update.
Series Masterlist
Tumblr media
Mrs Parker had a vicious little French Bulldog. She barked at strangers and had chased the last plumber out of their house. The sink still hadn't been fixed.
Mrs Parker took MeMe out late at night, to avoid all of the people.
She didn't expected to find a whining beagle by the gages. MeMe jumped at him. And Mrs Parker held her back.
Tucking MeMe under her arm, Mrs Parker introduced herself to the Beagle. "Bruiser," she said, reading off his nametag. "Where's your owner, Bruiser?" She asked as she patted his head.
Bruiser let out a whine and Mrs Parker decided that she would stay with him, at least until his owner appeared.
She was there with him for half an hour and nobody appeared. Mrs Parker couldn't believe that somebody would abandon such a sweet boy.
She checked his collar and found three different phone numbers. She called all of them, with the third one picking up.
"Yeah?" Came a voice.
"Hello," said Mrs Parker. "Is this Bruisers owner?"
There was a pause. "Bruiser? Landos fucking dog?"
Mrs Parker cleared her throat and MeMe yapped. "I don't know who that is but I found Bruiser here at the park. I was wondering if anybody could pick him up? If not I will be taking him to a shelter."
"Shit, sorry," the guy said. "Yeah, I'll be there in fifteen minutes. You're at the park, yeah?"
Mrs Parker stayed with Bruiser until the car pulled up. The man introduced himself as Max and explained that Bruiser belonged to his best friend, who was currently in Spain. He thanked Mrs Parker and got Bruiser into his car.
Mrs Parker stayed there until Max disappeared. She placed MeMe on the floor, a bad feeling settling in the pit of her stomach.

Tumblr media
I was tagged this week by @onthewaytosomewhere @reagcdfox
@iboatedhere @firenati0n @taste-thewaste @tailsbeth-writes. Thank you lovelies and tagging you back today.
On Friday I posted the last chapter of 'Wait for me (To come home)' so this one is now complete and safe to binge.
Today I'm coming with a little something something first draft that I'm cooking up for Christmas šŸ‘€ (Think Hallmark vibe, small town meet cute, aged up single Dads Alex and Henry, animal shelter owner Henry, DOGS)
Snippet and tags under the cut
Emilia Fox had entered Olivia's life during her first visit to the small town. They hit it off instantly, and since then, Alex has always listened fondly to all the things Millie and she had done during her stays, which often involved the infamous David, Millieā€™s beagle. Alex had only met Millie once, briefly, when dropping Olivia for a weekend. She had been extremely polite and, quite frankly, adorable with her long blond hair and blue eyes. Yet beneath her sweet exterior, Alex had glimpsed a spark of the spirited nature that matched his daughterā€™s. But Millie has not been the only subject of conversation. He also has had to hear extensively, and not only from his daughter, but from June and Nora as well, about Millieā€™s father, Henry, who apparently seems to be a paragon of virtue: kind, handsome, animal lover (he ran the local animal shelter apparently) always ready to help those in need. A real-life Prince Charming.Ā  Alex can't help but feel a mixture of curiosity and, if he is honest with himself, a twinge of competitiveness. He is eager to meet this Henry, this apparent pinnacle of fatherhood and masculinity. And perhaps, a small voice in the back of his mind whispers, he might just discover a flaw or two. Or three. After all, nobody can be that perfect... right?

Pairing: Alex Claremont-Diaz/Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor
ā€œOh my God, Davey! What have you done?ā€ Henry asked as he crouched next to me and started scratching my sides. ā€œWhat am I to do with you, stealing bagels and assaulting that handsome man? He is very handsome, donā€™t you think? Donā€™t you think, Davey? Yes, he isā€”ā€
"Sorry, Iā€”I forgot my bottle here,ā€ Alex says, bending down next to us and grabbing the bottle that remained on the ground.
ā€œYouā€™re not too shabby yourself,ā€ he said, smiling and starting to back away in a backwards jog, making sure Henry heard him.
And he heard him, alright. Henryā€™s cheeks were now a very intense color. I couldnā€™t tell you which one exactly; itā€™s all shades of gray for me. Heā€™s usually just a gray blob himself, but now there was definitely something different on his face.
He smiled shyly, shook his head, and grabbed my leash.
ā€œCome on, Davey. Letā€™s go home before we manage to embarrass ourselves any further today.ā€

Can you make a barnaby x wally fic ?,, I love them so much they stole my heart ,,
- barnaby fan
Hello!!
Of course - I went a little bit haywire with this one so it's a multi-chapter, and pre-relationship. It's also pretty heavy, but is also hurt/comfort! Hope this is what you were looking for <3
(ao3) (part two) (part three)
more like puppets than hands (part one)
His thoughts were swimming - what was his function? His order? His place? He had thought it had been on the farm, and then he thought it had been in the neighbourhood, and now he wasn't sure. He felt like he was torn between the two places. He was also oddly warm, despite the window across from where he was sat being open. Oh, and the door to his left. The front door.
Hang on.

---
The living room was decimated. There were scratch marks all over the couch, with its soft fluff pouring out of each crevice - there was smashed glass on the floor, and the bright moonlight streamed in from the windows. Night-time was a time of peace in the neighbourhood; usually the other neighbours were asleep, or engaging in their more quieter activities. Barnaby was faintly aware this was when Eddie usually drew in his sketchbook, and Frank organised his butterfly collection. "Everything has a place, Barnaby," Frank would say, and Barnaby can almost hear his voice now. Everything had a place, and everything had an order. An order that had just been upturned by Barnaby himself.
He was acutely aware of his own heartbeat, quicker than usual, and his breath was coming in quick pants.
Hang on.
Barnaby was sure he had shut the door earlier. He had been out in the neighbourhood, and then he came back at dusk, as normal, and shut the door. Why would he have left it open?
There was something in front of him; movement? Realistically the thought of danger should have been higher on his mind, but it was also the neighbourhood - who would even want to hurt him?
He focused on the figure, he could really make it out to be another neighbour now, with a blue quaff of hair, and a red handkerchief tied round his neck, and an oddly concerned look on his face. It looked out of place - Wally was normally relaxed, especially when with Barnaby, always laughing at his jokes. He should never look this sad or worried in Barnaby's mind, what he wouldn't give to get rid of that look, to make sure Wally felt nothing but pure joy ever again.
"-aby? Barnaby? Can you hear me, neighbour? Bee!"
Barnaby mumbled something incoherent in response, even to himself, his eyes finally focusing on Wally.
"Wally?" Barnaby looked frazzled, all rough and raggedy, as if he had been playing the anti-gravity game for hours, "Wally... I'm sorry."
Wally deepened his frown, before tutting. It reminded him of Miss Beagle, and he felt that hole in his heart throb hard, "Hush now. What's wrong?"
"M'fine, m'fine, I'm sorry for worrying you! Just needed to let out some steam, you know how it is!" Barnaby tacked a smile onto the end of his sentence, spreading his hands out in front of him, as if to really try to sell the act that he was fine. Wally doesn't have to know everything, I mean what kind of friendship is that? And Barnaby truly was fine - or at least he will be. He always is, after all. Really, if he just told Wally what he was really feeling, it would just worry him more, and Barnaby hated it when Wally worried. He really was so much better happy.
Wally raised an eyebrow, his eyes looking down at Barnaby's hunched over position, before looking back up to his face. He was always so perceptive, so aware of how Barnaby was feeling; could read him like an open a book. "You don't have to tell me what's going on, but please," he paused, and their was a beat, as if Wally was preparing to ask what came next, "let me stay the night with you, hmm? I can make you some tea, take care of you. Let me do that."
"...Can we have courgettes?"
Wally lets out a little smile, "Of course, my darling.ā€

THE 13 BOOKS I READ IN 2023 IN ORDER FROM BEST TO WORST + THE PROTAGONIST'S SUPERLATIVE. PART 1.
NOTE: this ranking is entirely based on how much i enjoyed the thing and not necessarily on anything quantifiable or concrete. except for 1 and 12 those are just i think empirically true. also, this got very very hard between 2-8 and i enjoyed everything above 10 like, immensely. that said:
1. The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. fucking gorgeous book. the writing was incredible, it made me feel like i needed to write right now right now right now or i was going to die and also why would i ever write again when i didn't write this. made me REEL several times and need to put it down and process it. i need to read it again and again. so much in there about the structure of story and fairytales and roles within a story and just. augh. man. i have at least a thousand words worth of highlights of quotes that make me completely insane. i want to write a dissertation on the interactions of amalthea and lĆr.
Protagonist: Amalthea/The Unicorn. Best Gender Moments And Unmatched Aro Vibes.
2. Blackcurrant Fool by Victoria Goddard. someone designed these books in a lab just to kill specifically me. i'm so thrilled i'm like, mad about it. this is book four in the series and included some MASSIVELY fun payoffs for some background references and foreshadowing that had been building for a while. some of my favourite tropes on this here earth are contained in this book and they make me insane in their execution. beloved. i kept having to put my face in my hands and shriek. like. literally. i liveblogged the last like ~30% of the book to several people. in detail.
Protagonist: Jemis Greenwing. Most Likely To Respond To A Given Situation With Both The Most Sincerely Heartfelt And Most Dramatic Option Possible And Then Insist That This Was The Obvious And Logical Thing To Do.
3. Bee Sting Cake by Victoria Goddard. some really excellent introductions to characters and concepts in here. did a good job as the second book in the series to continue keeping things interesting while maintaining and expanding on what was good about the first one, introducing new elements and making them play well with the established dynamics and situation. some really fun exploration of 'what if your two favourite people met each other and how would that go'. some delightful stuff about bees also which gets me in my feelings and the pov character has a good cry a couple times which he damn well deserves at this point.
Protagonist: (since there are two, i'm alternating for this series' superlatives) Peregrine Dart. Best At Being Totally And Completely Fine (Lying).
4. Stargazy Pie by Victoria Goddard. YES. I LIKED THESE BOOKS A LOT OKAY. THREE OF THEM IN A ROW. WHAT OF IT. very fun introduction to a series, it was a great first book. it delivered its worldbuilding in my favourite way for a fantasy series to do so, which is to just sort of drop me right in and explain as we go in a naturalistic kind of way. it meant i had to accept i just didn't know what was going on several times but that was fine. excellent combo of silly and serious and the characters are just. so charming and i'm so so fond of them. also i love a really stuffy strict distant society. bc then i'm like OHO TIME TO BREAK THESE RULES!!!
Protagonist: Jemis Greenwing. Most Likely To Have Everything Happen To Him So Much And All At Once.
5. By Force Alone by Lavie Tidhar. this book would probably have been ranked higher if it weren't for all the Someone's Got Their Dick Out. which is fine, go for it, but it felt like all the like. someone is getting their guts stabbed out and someone else is fuckin every other page is mostly a thematic thing that is supposed to drive home how gritty and grimy the narrative is. which y'know. not my bag. i like a gritty and grimy narrative but dude we know. that said it was extremely fun except for that, and i liked the way the characters were described a lot. they were not good people and it was deliberate and compelling. it was a lot to process all at once and i wish i'd slowed down with it - the last fourth of the book particularly hit me like a train. special shoutout to everything this book did with pelinore and the questing beast.
Protagonist: Arthur Pendragon. Most Doomed By The Narrative.
