Photos of almost-adult Great Blue Herons from a couple weeks ago.
We talk so much about the weird positions cats sleep in, but 'balanced on one foot on a pediment covered in bird poop' is also pretty impressive!
Beautiful landing from this youngun!
I can tell these two are immature because despite having dapper blue streaks on their heads (unlike totally BABY herons), they are still growing in their mature breeding-display quills -- the short ivory brush-strokes where a regal ruff will go, down and around their necks.
Police are searching for a 32-year-old Beaverton nurse who has been missing since the morning of Sept. 4.
Melissa Jubane, a nurse at St. Vincent Medical Center, was reported missing Wednesday morning when she didn’t show up to work, the Beaverton Police Department said. Jubane is 5-foot-2 and weighs 120 pounds. She has dark hair and eyes.
Law enforcement have asked for the public’s help with the case, directing anyone with knowledge of Jubane’s whereabouts to call 503-629-0111, referencing case #24-2480460.
Coming out of hiding to post this cause it made me cackle, especially as a brunette myself. Sure the guys might be cute, but stuff like this makes you question what the hell is going on in the hockey world that they all need blondes.

Seeing as how this week the summer is marginally less blazingly sunny, today I betook myself to the local marsh to birdwatch. Have I processed all my photos? HA HA HA oh of course not. Did I squander my momentum by half-assing it to pull out favorite photos already? YOU BET.
Here are some of my favorite things I saw today:
💙 Immature great blue heron snapping around its head trying to snack a large dragonfly. (Obviously I did not get my camera up in time. I’m a doofus. But this is the young heron’s scrawny beautiful self:
💙 High heron levels leading to Heron Perch Conflicts, which the great blue herons obviously won. (Heron levels: great blue 4, great egret 4, green heron 2.)
1. “Just because I stepped OFF that branch does not mean you get to step ON it.”
2. “Keep on flying, draggle-butt!” (This great egret has a rather lovely but out of place feather trailing it, walking or flying, like a beautiful garland of toilet paper.)
3. Having chased the egret further off, the heron indulged in a little floofing and mantling. This isn’t the threat display I usually see, which is more like sideways fencing footwork with the wing as a shield; this is just straight-up “where do you think Brian Froud took inspiration for the Skeksis in The Dark Crystal from” showing off:
💞A pied-billed grebe bringing a big fish to its (loudly begging) offspring to eat. They’re such hungry creatures and love to steal prey from each other, but this good little parent is giving away a big catch!
💙 Young princefisher (belted kingfisher) backwinging to hover and decide if anything looks worth diving for. His flight control is gorgeous, and so is he!

So I decided to cancel the Dead Freeways Ride scheduled for Saturday the 23rd. The weather forecast looked pretty meh, and after 20 years of leading bicycle rides, I’m not excited about leading “meh” rides anymore. Believe me you, I used to feel “The show must go on!” and lead rides…
