I am, as ever, in my
Marsh Witch Era
Seeing as how this week the summer is marginally less blazingly sunny, today I betook myself to the local marsh to birdwatch. Have I processed all my photos? HA HA HA oh of course not. Did I squander my momentum by half-assing it to pull out favorite photos already? YOU BET.
Here are some of my favorite things I saw today:
💙 Immature great blue heron snapping around its head trying to snack a large dragonfly. (Obviously I did not get my camera up in time. I’m a doofus. But this is the young heron’s scrawny beautiful self:
💙 High heron levels leading to Heron Perch Conflicts, which the great blue herons obviously won. (Heron levels: great blue 4, great egret 4, green heron 2.)
1. “Just because I stepped OFF that branch does not mean you get to step ON it.”
2. “Keep on flying, draggle-butt!” (This great egret has a rather lovely but out of place feather trailing it, walking or flying, like a beautiful garland of toilet paper.)
3. Having chased the egret further off, the heron indulged in a little floofing and mantling. This isn’t the threat display I usually see, which is more like sideways fencing footwork with the wing as a shield; this is just straight-up “where do you think Brian Froud took inspiration for the Skeksis in The Dark Crystal from” showing off:
💞A pied-billed grebe bringing a big fish to its (loudly begging) offspring to eat. They’re such hungry creatures and love to steal prey from each other, but this good little parent is giving away a big catch!
💙 Young princefisher (belted kingfisher) backwinging to hover and decide if anything looks worth diving for. His flight control is gorgeous, and so is he!

The election in 1860 for the position of Boden Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Oxford was a competition between two candidates offering different approaches to Sanskrit scholarship. One was Monier Williams, an Oxford-educated Englishman who had spent 14 years teaching Sanskrit to those preparing to work in British India for the East India Company. The other, Max Müller, was a German-born lecturer at Oxford specialising in comparative philology, the science of language.
Adolfo Farsari (Italian pronunciation: [aˈdolfo farˈsaːri]; 11 February 1841 – 7 February 1898) was an Italian photographer based in Yokohama, Japan. His studio, the last notable foreign-owned studio in Japan, was one of the country's largest and most prolific commercial photographic firms. Largely due to Farsari's exacting technical standards and his entrepreneurial abilities, it had a significant influence on the development of photography in Japan.
Girl Pat was a small fishing trawler, based at the Lincolnshire port of Grimsby, that in 1936 was the subject of a media sensation when its captain took it on an unauthorised transatlantic voyage. The escapade ended in Georgetown, British Guiana, with the arrest of the captain, George "Dod" Orsborne, and his brother. The pair were later imprisoned for the theft of the vessel.
Abu Muhammad Hasan al-Kharrat (Arabic: حسن الخراط Ḥassan al-Kharrāṭ; 1861 – 25 December 1925) was one of the principal Syrian rebel commanders of the Great Syrian Revolt against the French Mandate. His main area of operations was in Damascus and its Ghouta countryside. He was killed in the struggle and is considered a hero by Syrians.
Marjorie Cameron Parsons Kimmel (April 23, 1922 – July 24, 1995), who professionally used the mononym Cameron, was an American artist, poet, actress and occultist. A follower of Thelema, the new religious movement established by the English occultist Aleister Crowley, she was married to rocket pioneer and fellow Thelemite Jack Parsons.
Maya stelae (singular stela) are monuments that were fashioned by the Maya civilization of ancient Mesoamerica. They consist of tall, sculpted stone shafts and are often associated with low circular stones referred to as altars, although their actual function is uncertain. Many stelae were sculpted in low relief, although plain monuments are found throughout the Maya region. The sculpting of these monuments spread throughout the Maya area during the Classic Period (250–900 AD), and these pairings of sculpted stelae and circular altars are considered a hallmark of Classic Maya civilization.
The North Norfolk Coast Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is an area of European importance for wildlife in Norfolk, England. It comprises 7,700 ha (19,027 acres) of the county's north coast from just west of Holme-next-the-Sea to Kelling, and is additionally protected through Natura 2000, Special Protection Area (SPA) listings; it is also part of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The North Norfolk Coast is also designated as a wetland of international importance on the Ramsar list and most of it is a Biosphere Reserve.
Preening is a maintenance behaviour found in birds that involves the use of the beak to position feathers, interlock feather barbules that have become separated, clean plumage, and keep ectoparasites in check. Feathers contribute significantly to a bird's insulation, waterproofing and aerodynamic flight, and so are vital to its survival. Because of this, birds spend considerable time each day maintaining their feathers, primarily through preening.
The Wells and Wellington affair was a dispute about the publication of three papers in the Australian Journal of Herpetology in 1983 and 1985. The periodical was established in 1981 as a peer-reviewed scientific journal focusing on the study of amphibians and reptiles (herpetology). Its first two issues were published under the editorship of Richard W. Wells, a first-year biology student at Australia's University of New England. Wells then ceased communicating with the journal's editorial board for two years before suddenly publishing three papers without peer review in the journal in 1983 and 1985. Coauthored by himself and high school teacher Cliff Ross Wellington, the papers reorganized the taxonomy of all of Australia's and New Zealand's amphibians and reptiles and proposed over 700 changes to the binomial nomenclature of the region's herpetofauna.
Wulfhere or Wulfar (died 675) was King of Mercia from 658 until 675 AD. He was the first Christian king of all of Mercia, though it is not known when or how he converted from Anglo-Saxon paganism. His accession marked the end of Oswiu of Northumbria's overlordship of southern England, and Wulfhere extended his influence over much of that region.

anybody looking for weird feminist girlie coming of age s/xual awakening type movies that are not The Virgin Suicides, I’ve got u covered <3
-Raw (2016) - French-Belgian production. a little on the horror side for sure but very deep and interesting. I believe this is still free on Netflix.
- Water Lillies (2007) - French production. Directed by the same woman who did Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Coming of age queer drama about exploring and experimenting with sxuality. full movie is finally free on YouTube!
- Daisies (1966) - Czech new wave film. Feminist farce. Ridiculously good fun. Girlies eating food for an hour. Free on HBO Max.
- Ginger Snaps (2000) - English. another coming of age girlie horror type film. Free on Vudu, Tubi, Prime Video, and Sling TV.
- Alucarda (1977) - another girlie + girlie (romance?) that also involves the devil and is sort of the overlooked version of The Exorcist. You can find this on the internet archive and I believe in YouTube as well.
- Wetlands (2013) - German coming of age movie. Just a girlie who likes to be different and fck around. Should be free on Tubi, definitely on prime video, also on Apple TV (though I must check to specifically see where one can find this for free)
If anybody has other good movie recommendations in this category let me know so I can add to this beautiful list

Totk comments on grinding mats 2.0:
1) the fire lizalfos are present in the cliffs east of Gerudo desert from 7 am to 7 pm, when they swap to ice lizalfos. This means this place is good for grinding both. I got ~16 tails in one grind session, so with one blood moon in between, you should be able to get the 30 required for the final ascension of either set (or be close enough that some supplements from eldin or hebra are all that's needed)
2) there is almost no reason to fight the regular gleeoks. Just fight the king gleeok; it's on the lone sky island to the far west, north half of the map. Basically right in line with the "w" of "west necluda sky archipelago" and to the far left edge of the map. I put a teleportation circle there to make it easier for my monthly visit. The regular ones rarely drop guts, so grinding the guts will just be more expedient with fighting the king gleeok. However, it is above hebra, so you need at least 2 pieces of the snowquill set - I recommend all three for the unfreezable set bonus ngl. Hence why I'm focusing on maxing it out. If you haven't fought an ice one - in the final stage of the fight when it flies too high to hit, wait for an ice chunk to fall and then reverse time it up for the easiest way to reach it, imo
3) still looking for various levels of boss bokoblins. I would quite like to level the royal guard set cos it's cute ehe... anyway, right now I've only located one red boss bokoblin, just east of lookout landing near the town ruins there. If anyone knows where other (always red) ones are, I'd like to hear!
4) of silver lynels, one appears at the south end of the Faron grasslands in the Nautelle Wetlands, one appears northeast of kakariko/northwest of lanayru promenade, just east of kurakat shrine. I believe there's another east of rito village, up the cliff on the north aide of the road, a little east of Tama pond, but beware the ground is half snow there so movement is difficult.
#totk#totk spoilers#mainly just for information about monsters and the location of the king gleeok#personal

So apparently explaining things in detail no one asked to be explained is my thing now.
This is actually my wheelhouse though, I majored in botany. Let's learn about American Chestnut trees!
"I don't know shit about trees, March, what is an American Chestnut? Since when do trees have nationalities?"
The American Chestnut is a type of beech tree. As for why it's called the American Chestnut, it's because this is a chestnut native to the Americas, specifically North America. It's deciduous, a word I love to say [deh-sid-you-uhs], which means it loses its leaves in the fall. These are big fuckers, easily reaching over 40ft/12m, some known to be 100ft/31m, with a max circumference [the around-the-trunk measurement] of 12ft/4m.
"Okay, but there are other trees."
Yes, there are. However, it helps to think of an ecosystem as a Rube Goldberg Machine. If one part breaks, the machine doesn't work. Now, nature has the beautiful ability to adapt much better to a lost part than a machine, but the American Chestnut was a key species of the Northeast/Midwest North American forests. They were an essential part of the canopy.
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Chart detailing the levels of a northeastern North American forest. The layers include examples of the plants and bird species found on their respective layers. In order from top to bottom, the layers are: GROUND COVER - There are two variations given of plant species for ground cover, prairie, which is dry grassland, and wetland, which is anything from swampy/brackish areas to floodplains. PLANTS [PRAIRIE]: Gramas, bluesterns, paspalums PLANTS [WETLAND]: Sedges, rushes, cattails BIRDS: Sparrows, shorebirds, waterfowl, wadingbirds UNDERSTORY LOW SHRUBS: Agaritas, yaupons, wax myrtles TALL SHRUBS: Dogwoods, viburnums, hawthorne BIRDS: Mockingbirds, bluebirds, wrens, doves MIDSTORY TREES: Ash, maples, sweetgums, hackleberries BIRDS: Warblers, jays, vireos, chickadees, cardinals, kinglets CANOPY [where the American Chestnut would be] TREES: Junipers, hickories, pines, cedars, maples, oaks, elms, pecans BIRDS: Owls, woodpeckers, vireos, warblers, thrushes, nuthatches, tanagers, creepers ABOVE CANOPY BIRDS: Vultures, hawks, swallows, swifts]
Which means they supported not only everything that lived in the canopy, which included the birds who hunted and foraged above the canopy, but everything above and below as well. You see, everything that grows in the midstory, understory and ground cover levels is filling their niche in the ecosystem, and their niche was below the giants. Shrubs like dappled sunlight, not full light. When the canopy is stripped out, not only is that large source of food and shelter gone, but the plants below are also now weakened until something else fills in that niche in the canopy. So the chestnut blight didn't just take out chestnut trees. It took out whole forests.
"But what was the blight?"
Blight: botany a: a disease or injury of plants marked by the formation of lesions, withering, and death of parts (such as leaves and tubers) b: an organism (such as an insect or a fungus) that causes blight
The Chestnut Blight is caused by a fungus. Cryphonectria parasitica.
"Chestnut Blight: Cryphonectria parasitica Chestnut blight is caused by the fungus Cryphonectria parasitica and infects American chestnut trees (Castanea dentata) throughout the United States and Canada. Once a major tree species, American chestnut trees filled Eastern and Midwestern forests. The fungus arrived from Asia with the import of Japanese chestnut trees in the late 19th century. By 1913, the disease had wiped out enough trees to warrant investigation by the USDA"
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A close-up photograph of the bark of a juvenile American Chestnut tree infected with Chestnut Blight. The fungus appears as a rash of small, irregularly formed oblong bumps on the bark. The fungus is a burnt-orange color, in contrast to the medium-brown of the tree bark.]
Now, what the person in that comment is likely talking about is the attempts to stop the blight. The blight struck in the late 1800s. And yes, when forestry experts realized what was happening, they did start cutting down trees. But it wasn't for the reasons this person is stating. When a fungus or disease gets into an ecosystem, the only way to save it, especially in this time period, was to absolutely annihilate the infected parts. These trees were chopped down and burned to stop the infection from spreading. Unfortunately, it did not work.
"Chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica) has probably had the most pervasive influence on forest structure and composition in the southern Appalachians of any disease or insect. Prior to the introduction of this disease, the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was the tallest and most dominant hardwood species in the eastern United States (Fig. 2). It grew in vast stands from Maine to Florida, with the largest trees occurring in the southern Appalachians (Schlarbaum et al. 1997). After the introduction of the fungus, which probably arrived on nursery stock from Asia around 1900, native chestnut trees, which had no resistance, quickly succumbed. The fungus enters a host through cracks or wounds in the bark and multiplies rapidly. It produces sunken cankers which expand and girdle the stem, killing everything above the canker, usually in one growing season (Fig. 1). Fungus spores can be transported by wind or on the feet of migrating birds and insects. The disease can spread rapidly — about 24 miles per year (Schlarbaum et al. 1997). By 1929, nearly all counties in the southern Appalachians were infested; by about 1940, most of the standing chestnut trees were dead (SAMAB 1996)."
So the American Chestnut is very much not extinct. The blight does not effect the rootstock. [Link to an overview of what rootstock means in this context] It effects the juveniles. We need to find a way to get the trees resistant to the fungus, which is where genetic engineering comes in.
And we have failed many, many times. But...for science, that's not a sign to give up. Usually when your experiment fails, it helps you get closer to an answer that will work. And many people have been working since the blight started over a hundred years ago to keep the American Chestnut from going extinct. And it might take another hundred years to get
The blight was not anyone's fault. At the time, there was so much unknown regarding invasive species and ecosystems. You ever wondered why there are so many regulations about what plants you can and cannot bring in to another country? [gestures up at entire post] This would be an example why, and why you need to follow those rules. It's not just the plant you're carrying. You are essentially bringing foreign diseases into an unvaccinated population.
This has been "American Chestnut Trees" with March.
The most "???????" thing I found in r/collapse though was a thread talking about the "extinction" of the American Chestnut tree...the whole thing, but in particular this fucking comment
the implication that right after the blight started, "settlers" suddenly got the idea of cutting down all the trees. Does this person think a tree has to be already dead to be cut down for wood?
"there was no breeding project or attempt at all at saving them" shut up. just shut up. i beg
"University extensions are encouraging people to cut down healthy ash trees so they can sell the timber" ..."they?" The university extensions?
So for context, the American chestnut is NOT extinct, it has been the subject of intensive breeding programs with a broad and robust genetic base for decades, genetic engineering has been used to create trees with blight resistance that are now being planted and the work is continuing, I have had the privilege of speaking with some of the people that have devoted their entire lives to saving this tree, and let me FUCKING tell you, the eighty-year-old gentleman walking with a cane did not hobble painstakingly up a mountain to the chestnut grove for some dumbass to say "boohoo so sad that there were no breeding programs for american chestnut tree"
I cannot even describe how humbling it was to hear the old folks speak about the decades they worked to save the American Chestnut tree, long before the technology now being used to create blight resistant trees even EXISTED. It is a quest that will take multiple human lifetimes to complete, the people that began it will never see the trees grow old, but they made it their life's mission anyway.
I'm just...unable to understand why someone would say something like that. How could someone be so attached to their sad, dismal fantasy of apocalypse that they either fail to learn about, or outright lie about, a much more beautiful truth????
LOOK AT HER, YOU BITCH.

it’s a work in progress but i wrote it about someone im crushing on a ton… probably took me 15-20 mins max to make this draft that’s how whipped i am..
i sit and watch the azaleas that wrap themselves around the black willow clinging on as tight as possible trying their hardest not to slip into the green murks below us as the glimpses of sunbeams and light shine too into my eyes.
here we are in the heat of this july day my love, you sit and focus on the movements of the worn mahogany paddles of our boat in the wetlands as i lie back with a cigarette out of my mouth that i could’ve lit with just the heat of the sun,
and you’ll still keep me close to you in the heat that somehow flushes and dries me out despite being surrounded by only water and the living and breathing trees.
maybe i am like one of those azaleas, how i wrap around you and cling onto your affection as if you’re one of those tall dark willows that drape and put shade over me and all the over azaleas and trees and protect us as to not let me and all the others dry out,
you beautiful boy, to not have to try with you like how i’ve always tried to impress everyone is my liberation and you’ve radicalised me and now i am an extremist with all of Gods love in my own heart,
but as i think of God and i think of what to pray for there’s really nothing more i could want than to be held and taken care of by you in this little dream boat of ours slowly pacing through the swamp on the most beautiful of summers days.

Photography: Wildlife Photographer of the Year Winners Show the Beauty — and Precarity — of Nature
— October 11, 2023 | By Rachel Treisman | NPR
10 Years and Younger Winner: The wall of wonder. Nallur Heritage Tamarind Grove, Karnataka, India. An ornamental tree trunk spider prevents its prey from escaping. To the photographer, it seemed the spider had positioned its web after being entranced by the sound of Krishna's flute. Vihaan Talya Vikas/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Animal Portraits Winner: Face of the forest. Tapiraí, São Paulo, Brazil. A lowland tapir steps cautiously out of the swampy Brazilian rainforest. They rely on the forest for their diet of vegetation and in turn they act as seed dispersers — an important relationship threatened by habitat loss, illegal hunting and traffic collision. Vishnu Gopal/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Wetlands Winner: The dead river. Ciliwung river, Jakarta, Indonesia. Plastic and human waste and agricultural fertilizers are suffocating the Ciliwung river. As a result, Jakarta's residents must use groundwater for drinking water, which has resulted in widespread subsidence. The city is now sinking. Joan de la Malla/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Steven Johnson highlights a lump of spotted salamander eggs resting on a bed of sphagnum moss in a vernal pool near Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. Shallow seasonal pools like these are ideal amphibian nurseries because they’re safe from predators like fish. But these habitats are impacted by environmental change: Less predictable spring rains are causing pools to dry up before the young salamanders can fully develop and live on land. Photograph By Steven Johnson, Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Piotr Neskrecki captured a group of African sharptooth catfish scavenging from a waterbuck that died after getting stuck in the mud—illustrating the cyclical nature of life at Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique 🇲🇿. Sharptooth catfish are omnivorous and can survive for several days out of water thanks to an air-breathing organ in their gills. If they do eventually perish while they wait for the rains to return, they provide food for other species. Photograph By Piotr Naskrecki, Wildlife Photographer of the Year
In this image, Mexican photographer Fernando Constantino Martínez Belmar shows how a new cross-country tourist railway line devastates the natural landscape in Paamul, Quintana Roo. The railway will bring economic benefits to southeast Mexico, but it also fragments the ecosystems, threatens protected reserves and archaeological sites, and impacts Indigenous peoples by destroying their land. Photograph By Fernando Constantino Martínez Belmar, Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Isaac Szabo photographed different species gathered near a river chub’s nest in a freshwater stream in Virginia’s Whitetop Laurel Creek. During springtime spawning, male river chubs sometimes carry rocks and pebbles as far as 33 feet to form a mound where eggs can be sheltered from currents and predators. Other minnow species also use their nests to keep their eggs safe. Photograph By Isaac Szabo, Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Max Waugh captured this bison barreling through the snow in Yellowstone National Park. Bison once roamed across North America, with populations of 50 to 60 million at the start of the 1800s—then less than a thousand at the end of the century. Today, their numbers are slowly increasing with careful conservation efforts. Photograph By Max Waugh, Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Florida's War With Invasive Pythons Has a New Twist
Max G. Levy for WIRED:
Florida has a twisted relationship with the Burmese python. Americans imported nearly 100,000 of them from Southeast Asia between 1996 and 2006. (The US banned their import in 2012.) Many pet owners hadn't realized that the snakes grow to 12 feet, on average, and they abandoned them. South Florida's warm wetlands offer the perfect adoptive habitat. Their inconspicuous patterning conceals them in the already remote Everglades, which makes them hard to track. Ecologists peg their detectability at less than 1 percent. That means if there are 100 snakes in your survey area, you'd be lucky to spot just one.
The pythons officially established a self-sustaining population in the ecosystem in 2000, according to the US Geological Survey. Today, there are likely tens of thousands of them across South Florida, and the USGS believes the number will only increase as populations expand to new areas within the peninsula. (They're not likely to spread to similar wetlands in Alabama and Louisiana, though, since they can't survive the colder temperatures they'd have to migrate through to exit northern Florida.) According to the USGS report, eradication is "likely impossible." And now, says Kirkland, "They are eating all of our native wildlife."
Florida belongs to snakes now

fixing carbrain takes a long time. in Portland it's taken almost 50 years to finally bury parking minimums:
1975, we set a total parking maximum in downtown, "The Lid" is adjusted upwards periodically, while the min-max ranges on new development is periodically adjusted downwards1
1991, "Storefronts" and "Mixed Use" zones have parking minimums eliminated2
2002, parking minimums are eliminated within a 1/4 mile of transit corridors3
2013, in a spectacular NIMBY backslide, we reinstate parking minimums for apartments within transit corridors (but you can reduce this minimum by planting trees or bike staples)2
2015-2019, a bunch of other cities Just Say No to parking minimums
2021, "Single Dwelling" zones (the kind with big setbacks, classic American suburbia) have parking minimums eliminated3
2022, no more minimum parking near bus lines and street car lines3
2023, we finally eliminate minimums on everything that technically still had parking minimums: the wetlands, the West Hills, the airport, and bunch of other forgotten tracts of land3
