Something funny that's happened just recently is that the president has said that current vice president JD Vance isn't (yet) his chosen successor for 2028.

I realise it's still very early, but this does raise the possibility that Donald Trump sees a Trump family dynasty with Don Jr. running in 2028, followed maybe by Eric or Lara, and then finally by Barron.

It's been mentioned before and it seems like the kind of thing he would want to push, especially if he does actually stand down at the end of his current term and doesn't seek a (constitutionally illegal) third.

It also highlights that Vance is still quite new to the MAGA crowd and, whilst 4 years is a long time, he's still someone that was once anti-Trump. Just because he's VP, it apparently doesn't set him up for tacit support this early on.

Vance will have a lot of work to do to win over the president and the GOP, but he's gone all the way to VP after only being a senator for two years, so he has the ability, he has the connections, and he can win the base.

Vance also has his compelling story and backers on the New Right, like Peter Thiel, who will likely be willing to lobby for him quite aggressively. It's also worth noting that one of his prominent backers to be tapped for VP by Trump in the first place was Don Jr.
