Hello, Zexal fans! Zexal Month 2024 is just around the corner and, for this year, we're doing the ABCs of Zexal! That's right, this year, our prompts are just based on the letters of the alphabet. Feel free to just use the titles (like A is for Astral) as the prompt or look at the following text for ideas. We can’t wait to see what art/writing/edits/cosplay/etc you produce for us!

Week 1: Introductions We’re going straight into it this year! For this week, introduce yourself and share with us something you like about our favourite warring factions!

5th: C is for Chaos Chaos is both a force of evil and the essence of life in Zexal. For this prompt, you can go either way. Share the craziest thing you enjoyed about Zexal or put your favourite character in a chaotic situation. Alternatively, draw a character in Zexal getting corrupted by Chaos. 6th: D is for Duel What’s your favourite duel in the series? What characters would you have liked to see duel? 7th: E is for Enemy Oneshot villains like the Fallguys, the Arclights, Don Thousand? A hero’s journey is only as good as its bad guys so let’s give them some appreciation! What do you like about them? 8th: F is for Friendship What’s you favourite friendship in the series? Alternatively, what friendship would you have liked to see? What two characters would have had a good friendship? 9th: G is for Gate The gate to the Astral world can also link to other worlds. This is our crossover prompt! Throw the Zexal characters to another world/fandom you’re in at the moment or bring other characters to the world of Zexal.

12th: H is for Hobby Whether it’s a character doing your hobbies or what you have headcanoned for them, show a Zexal Character (or characters) enjoying themselves with a hobby outside of card games! 13th: I is for Icicles Whether it’s icicles because it’s winter right now or icicles as in the stuff you eat at the beach, it’s time to give our faves a treat! Throw everyone in a beach episode or in a cabin under the snow... 14th: J is for Justice (Or Jail) Tell us what you thought was unfair in Zexal or show us a character that you think should be punished. Maybe show us bringing it into your own hand… 15th: K is for KATTOBINGU Kattobingu is the will to never give up without giving it your all. It’s taking a chance and moving forward with courage. Sshow us what you like about them. 20th: N is for Numbers Let’s give our favourite MacGuffin some love. What’s your favourite Number? What design you like? Feel free to include non-Anime Numbers here. 21st: O is for Originality There are a lot of OCs in the Zexal. Share them with us and tell us about them. Alternatively, show us some new outfits for one or members of the Zexal crew! 22nd: P is for Powers Photon mode, Barian transformations, Arclight crests, ZEXAL. Zexal has so many powers in the show. What’s your favourite? 26th: R is for Ruins Whether we’re talking about the literal ruins the characters go through the series or the past (the ruin of the self), it’s all about our characters’ history. How were the characters when they were young? How will they be in the future? How would they be if they had a past life? 27th: S is for Siblings The Arclight siblings, the Kamishiro Twins, Yuma and Akari, Haruto and Kaito. There are so many familial relationships in Zexal. I'm freaking obsessed with this boys trust issues and separation from his own humanity omg(not to mention how suited to zexal specifically this makes him, yknow, it being a show all about the good in humanity and forgiveness and relationships and identity and stuff)

I also adore how he's introduced and this big strong bad guy and slowly shown to be the post pathetic shit-for-brains motherfucker ever.

his backstory and how it impacts his character frick man, humans frequently being in his life as a source of pain and trauma and betrayal whereas jinlong literally saved his life causing his current mindset witb distain for humans and reverence for dragons

I love every single one of his duels in the barian onslaught arc omg, the narrative told through them is just too good. first off we have tachyon being taken in his duel with the arclight brothers(and his subsequent freakout). then omg omg, HTE WAY THIS IS FOLLOWDD UP ON IN MOON DUEL. when hes told by kaito that tachyon is just a tool of don thousands to manipulate him and he says that tachyon "would never betray him like that" DESPITE THE FACT THAT LITERALLY IN HIS PRIOR DUEL THAT HE JUST FINISHED LIKE FIVE MINUTES AGO IN UNIVERSE TACHYON WAS USED AGAINST HIM.

(also sidenote, I love how mizaels unwavering trust in his dragons despite betrayal mirrors yumas faith in humanity and constant forgiveness offered to anyone and everyone).

plus then in his duel with Don thousand when his dragons are used against him by don k just like how his villagers were in his past life FUCK MAN. and then as he dies he says he "found something to believe in" functionally signaling him understanding the belief in the inherent good in humanity that is so pivotal to the shows themes, because really humanity is no different from dragons, mizael may be betrayed by them but that doesn't mean he's gonna stop believing in them FUCK

I'm also never getting over just how stupid and angry he is, and how he kinda just,, atops thinking when he gets upset. that moment when he horrendously displays by chaos drawing the seventh one while tachyon is an equip is genuinely just amazing, plus HIM LITERALLY TRYINF TO DO THE YUGIOG EQUIVALRNT OF SUICIDE BOMB *GOD* IM NEVER FUCKING GETTING OVER THAT HELLO?

also I would just love to mention how well designed both him and tachyon are, tachyon feels almost out of place in his deck, it's so weirdly mechanical in a way that really emphasizes that it was created to imitate something mizael loves to manipulate him augh it's so good. also its effect being referred to as going back in time?? in the show about allowing the past to stay in the past so you can live in your present and think to the future?? hello?? Just fucking go right for the throat then huh.(also this relating to his distrust of humans due to being unable to let go of past betrayals aughhh)

as for mizaels design, omg. most the other barians have pretty consistent color palettes between their different forms, but MIZAEL? despite his barian form being primarily yellow, he dresses mostly in monochrome in his human form, showing how he doesn't think of it as /himself/. plus the gems on his vest, shirt, and boots which feel reminiscent of the gems that barians have all over their bodies(this design aspect also being used on shark as a form of foreshadowing hehe), showcasing how he's trying to make his human form resemble his barian form, to die for. he's also notably VERY covered up(gloves, long sleeves, turtleneck(yeah ik the turtleneck is sometimes omittsd depending on the animator but idc)), and has funky little tats on his face, making it feel like hes trying to hide his human body so he doesn't have to acknowledge the human part of himself. (note:I am not saying that people who dress covered up or have body mods irl secretly hate themselves, I am just saying that this is how that design aspect is used specifically for mizael, please do not misinterpret my words on tumblr dot com)

ALSO his hair, him trying to project his identity outward in any way possible to overpower how human he is and how incongruous that is with with his identity, causing his hair to change in his human form so that tHE BACK OF HIS HAIR LITERALLY FORMS AN 'M', YOU CANNOT TELL ME THAT ISNT ADORABLE

I also rly like just how much an asshole he is lmao. like how he's constantly shown insulting alit and gilag, like him telling them to "just try their best" when handing them the sphere cubes BRO. and then when alit gets hurt and mizael clearly does actually care on some level based on his expression but he refuses to show it and has to be all tsundere about it and ends up just calling alit pathetic for getting beat up LMAOOO(zero fucking social skills or emotional intelligence, love an autistic king), and then him indirectly calling durbe a coward during sargasso fuck offffff

also his intense one sided beef with vector is so fucking funny, like threatening to feed him to his dragon and trying to break his nonexistent nose, it's forever hilarious to me that whoever was writing his game bios felt that this was an important enough character detail to mention it(with vector literally being mentioned BY NAME in some of mizaels bios)

I will probably keep posting more art even though zexal month is over, because I want to share more of my barian monster babies, but I just wanted to say thank you for running this event. I have been deeply obsessed with Zexal for a few years now and wanted something to push me into drawing more, but I was so caught up in work and grad school that I wasn't giving myself time to create. Then I lost my job and during this month break from school this was the perfect event to help me reconnect with myself and process my feelings a bit through art, remembering that there's more to me than just my work persona, I can be proud of and excited to share my creative side too! This was a much needed gateway to more artistic time in my day, and more overall joy in my life. I have drawn more this past month than in the last year combined, probably!

This show means a lot to me because of its themes of believing in goodness and learning to accept the chaos of life as something beautiful and necessary for growth and connection.

I want to carry that kattobingu spirit into my next job and the next chapters of my life.

Astral World

Here all about the Astral Word.

1. The astral world is a realm that consists only of energies and is only accessible to people with a high spiritual level. So, Astralians exist on a level that is not visible to the human eye. 2. The astral world exists parallel to the human world. Because of this, Don Thousand was able to use the Numeron Network to fuse both worlds, harnessing the powers of the Numeron Code. If the astral word is destroyed, the earth go down as well. 3. In the astral world, any living being can use "Shining draw" (the creating play move). Also, it seems that damage done during the duel would remain instead of disappearing. 4. Eliphas is a kind of god or guardian of the astral world, created by the inhabitants, when Don Thousand brought chaos to the astral world. Astral was also created. The assumption is, that it was Enna. 5. The barian world emerged from a chunk of the astral world and represents the counterpart. Chaos reigns in this world, while the astral world has banished all chaos. Later Astral fuses the worlds back together with the nummeron code. 6. Astral world resembles a desert and many plants are dying. When Yuma enters this world, he fills it with life again and he can also heal the inhabitants who have cracks. 7. Eliphas notices this immediately and says that the residents are now infected with chaos. But apparently this world cannot live without chaos, which is why (a little) chaos also seems to be life energy. 8. When humans die, they can become reinincarnated in the astral world, if they´ve a pure soul. 9. From the astral world are the Duelmonsters. 10. Astralians all have fair skin that glows bluish or turquoise. Occasionally, some Astralians also have violet skin. Their empty-looking eyes also shine blue or turquoise. Her hair is white, blue, turquoise. Once lighter, once darker. The clothing of the Astralians looks old-fashioned. Astral, Eliphas, Don Thousand, and Enna stand out quite a bit with their looks. 11. Don Thousand is formerly from the astral world. However, he seems to have gotten his black coloring from the chaos. No other Astralian has such dark skin. The fact that Black Mist is also black is apparently due to the fact that he is a) a part of Don Thousand and b) the dark counterpart of the light-filled Astral.

Who is Envy Colton or Elijah Nekros?

Envy was born in Heartland city to a small family with a big life… the big life being, a not so good one. Envy was originally known as Elijah V. Nekros the son of Mr & Mrs. Nekros

Two genius Yu-Gi-Oh duelists with a bright future. At least that's what it seemed.

While life away from home was full of fame and treasury, home life left nothing but screams, agony, and pain. Especially for his mother.

His father Leostarno Nekros was an abusive alcoholic with a threatening and violent personality who often took out his anger upon his wife and son.

This remained unknown to the general public as both Elijah and his mother, Katalynn were too afraid to speak up, as he threatened to banish them to Barian World with his Chaos Number: C5 - Chimera Dragon.

And this worked for years…and years…and years… until- when Elijah reached the age of 14, his father did something he would regret.

It was the regional championships, Leostrano was in the finals in a fight against his biggest nemesis yet, Kazuma Tsukumo…a talented adventurer and duelist with two sons. -(Ask Luca for more details)-

And Leo was not about to lose… while the duel seemed to last forever their final minutes drew near, Leostrano was at 1200 LP and Kazuma was at 200 LP: and it was Leostrano’s turn…

So he arrogantly smirked drawing his next card… “Magic Barian Chaos Force” a card that would take his Chimera Dragon and form it into the ultimate monster of destruction… and without thinking to read the card, that's just what he did.

“I use the spell card…. Rank up Magic Barian’s Force!”

The stadium shook and roared as the dark ethereal energy shot down upon the stage evolving his number card into something forbidden to something evil. The world around them as they knew it began to crumble, taking Leostrano and Kazuma with it into the gaping Galaxy as both of their Life Points decimate ending the duel.

Elijah stood in shock. What happened? How did it happen? Why did it happen?

Elijah never liked his father, but he couldn’t help but love him. It was his father after all, and he had just watched his own Monster Card take his life right before his eyes. And what of the card? Where was it now?

He was shaken out of his thoughts when he heard the screams and cries of a young boy, later seen to be ‘Yuma Tsukumo’ Kazuma’s youngest.

He looked down, he didn’t dare look. He had the eyes of his father and yet the heart of his mother. The guilt was too much.

So he does what any other broken kid would do, and he takes a walk down by the river, flipping through the cards in his deck. When he passed the radio that rested at a small market place by the shore, it caught Elijah’s attention.

“Wife of Leostrano Nekros was found dead in her own bedroom hanging from a rope, authorities say that the body had been dead for at least 24 hours…and the cause of death was strangulation by hand.”

The young boy paused, frozen in fear, neglect, and shame. His father, died, and killed his mother, Elijah was alone?!

Elijah more than anything wanted to be mad. In a shock of emotions he threw his deck onto the ground, the cards flying across the sidewalk as he fell to his knees screaming in pain, his fists slamming into the rocky road as he’d shout.

“FUCK YOU! FUCK ALL OF YOU!”

His hands continued slamming into the concrete, the skin peeling off his knuckles as he cried.

Elijah was alone.

After sitting by the river for around 3 hours, it began to sprinkle. Elijah picked up his cards, slipped them into his coat pocket and began making his way home in the pouring rain, happening to pass bye the local graveyard where he saw the Tsukumo family mourning the loss of their father.

Elijah sighed and continued to walk, about 15 minutes later he made it to his house, opened the door, and went inside. The house was cold and wet and smelt of death, but none of it really had an effect on Elijah, not anymore.

He walked into his father’s room and began looking around before his eyes landed on a enclosed glass case sitting by his bed. Inside was a Yu-Gi-Oh card, that read ‘Number 96: Dark Mist’. Elijah stood there and stared at the card for a long while before touching the glass, as if it was pulling him. And with a sudden click, the number 96 shot up into the sky, the glass shattering as it knocks Elijah back; his eyes wide with fear. Were all the Nekros’s going to die today?!?!

He opened his eyes, a world of pink purple orange and golden energy devoured him, he looked around, intrigued. ‘Where am I?’ He asks himself, before a darker voice is heard from behind.

“This is Barian World… and you must be Mr.Nekros, correct?”

Elijah turned around, a man, a ghost, an ethereal of black good, purple and gold eyes and magnificent gems floated in-front of him.

“Dark Mist… but you can see Lazal…” the number smirked.

“You-your number card—“ Elijah muttered, collapsing back in fear as if to be scared to burn eternally.

“Indeed I am… and you broke my case… human..” The number smiled, his golden eyes shining as ElijahMs body began to darken, his clothes matching that of the Etheral’s colors.

“Whats happening?!” Elijah yelled being drowned out by the Barian like mask.

“You came to the Barian’s you become a Barian..shame… this punishment was meant for your foolish father, but I suppose you will do just fine taking down The Astral World…”

Elijah’s blue eyes peaked through the Barian mask in fear before fully being sealed away, where he rested in thought…

The memories of the abuse…the hatred… the neglect and anger… his eyes slowly opened, he looked down at his claws that played as nails, then looked up at the Number.

And then… he smirked.

What about Dark Otes? How much did *that* transformation affect Yuhi’s ability to duel?

More of that state of being thingy.

It's more about him transforming to become Otes (he's not) than Dueling.

basically, almost none of those cases really do anything about the Dueling and are more character studies, though as I said, they can affect what is in the Deck, hypothetically.

But I'm having trouble of recalling 'super modes' actually affecting the actual Duel ability.

Except. Maybe. ZEXAL. And that's literally a play on Henshin Heroes. That's the like ONE case where it does because Yuma gets access to card rewrite abilities in life-or-death Duels in altered or higher energy space.

Barians do gain access to Barian Chaos Draw in Barian form in late ZEXAL to draw their Rank-Up-Magics, but it's not neccessarily an outright result of their real forms.

ZEXAL is like the one case of your question.

1. Zexal: Tori Meadows/Kotori Mizuki, she's my favorite of whole Yu-Gi-Oh! Series and Yu-Gi-Oh! Franchise because she is an angel. Even if she doesn't duel or loses or has to have someone with her when she duels, she is number one in my books. 

2. Zexal: Mrs. Meadows/Mizuki or Luna Ren-Meadows/Mizuki, she serves as an ally to Tori Meadows/Kotori Mizuki behind the scenes throughout the series.

3. Zexal: Meredith Meadows/Yone Mizuki, she also serves as an ally to Tori Meadows/Kotori Mizuki behind the scenes throughout the series.

4. Zexal: Caswell Francis/Takashi Todoroki, he is the best no matter what even if he wins or loses and uses technology to help his friends out.

5. Zexal: Art Stanley/Chitaro Ariga, he is the best even though he is a comic book artist and a Comic Hero user and he doesn’t have to duel to be perfect.

6. 5D's: Luna, she is the Ancient Fairy Dragon user with a pure heart.

7. 5D's: Leo, he is the Power Tool Dragon/Life Stream Dragon user with a strong heart that protects his family.

8. Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Card: Little Fairy, she is the best Effect Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Card that I will ever use no matter what because I care to use it in my decks present and future. Her effect is to discard a card to add a level to this card twice per turn.

9.  Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Card: Fairy Cheer Girl, she is the best Xyz Effect Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Card that I will ever use no matter what because I care to use it in my decks present and future. Her effect after she is Xyz Summoned after using two Fairy Type Monster Cards is you can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; draw 1 card. You can only use this effect of "Fairy Cheer Girl" once per turn.

10.  Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Card: CXyz: Dark Fairy Cheer Girl, she is the best Xyz and Effect Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Card that I will ever use no matter what because I care to use it in my decks present and future. Her effect after she is Xyz Summoned or Chaos Xyz Summoned using Rank-Up-Magic Barian’s Force to rank up Fairy Cheer Girl is when this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard: Draw 1 card. If this card has "Fairy Cheer Girl" as an Xyz Material, it gains this effect. ● When this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle and remains on the field: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; inflict 400 damage to your opponent for each card in your hand.

These are the main characters that I like and see as my top whatever for right now, but I will post my true tier list whenever I get the chance because I have a lot to do right now.   | Duel links also shows that Astral doesnt have nails so this is def not an animation error! HOWEVER what makes that really interesting is that Eliphas, Astral’s progenitor and PROTOTYPE [1] DOES have nails, though they’re rarely drawn with the closed shape the human characters nails are.  |

   -[1] All headcannon and au info aside Eliphas is explicitly stated to be artificial like astral and made before him, so its safe to assume that Eliphas can be viewed as a rough draft of what techniques would eventually go into making Astral.

  | What I find really cool about that is that from a design standpoint its a very good way to make him look ‘Alien’ same as him lacking any toes or how his hair and head seem to be drawn without a line to separate them. This also plays into how Takahashi seemed to have viewed Astral [and i guess by extension eliphas though dont quote me on that] as being made of a sort of metal like substance rather then just, blue space flesh stuff.  |

  | It gives the shape language of a poured mold rather then the organic structure Eliphas seemed to have been made with. Which fits because they both fundamentally have different power scales and ROLES. |

  | Eliphas and Astral were both designed with Combat in mind, Eliphas being designed to physically purge chaos and chaos alligned people from astral world as the denizens belived should be done [at the time] so you can note that compared to other denizens he is MASSIVE.  |

  | He’s taller, Physically Stronger, and given more powers then a kid in creative mode ALL of said powers being offensive from what we’ve seen. |

  | My point? ; Eliphas was designed from the ground up for Physical Confrontations. In such confrontations where someone would be punching and grabbing at you, even small things like having something on your hand to scratch them with on the off chance would be an advantage that the oh so practical denizens would have likely desired at the time. He was litterally constructed to be unstoppable in a Physical Fight with even minute advantages like being able to claw your face off if need be (Which is why he does his job too well and ends up a tyrant GG Denizens for not putting in a ‘dont kill our ruling bodies’ clause on your murder robot.)  |

   BY CONTRAST 

   | Astral is designed with Grand Scale Destruction in mind, its easy to overlook with how much goes on in season two but Astral is stated to have been made with the intent to first destroy don thousand and THEN destroy barian world with his innate powers. As a result he isnt designed with the physical strength of Eliphas because thats not what he was made to do. |

  | It’s no secret astral is VERY small and lean compared to everyone in the cast, even other denizens! He’s lean, elegant, petite and child like in design compared to Eliphas’s older more bulky form because he wasn’t made with the intent to Physically fight an opponent he was made to be Unassuming. If bulky armored warrior like Eliphas were to show up to your planet as an Envoy your guard would automatically be raised. BUT a small childish boy like Astral? What harm could he do? His form hides the fact he’s single handedly capable of destroying your entire planet. Its twisted yes but its also a very smart tactic for the denizens to employ because we know it works- LOOK AT THE FANDOM reaction to him! Astral is smaller in stature then eliphas but he is far more powerful then him in terms of Powers and Destructive ability. Where eliphas can stomp you in a physical brawl Astral can destroy your planet before you even know He Can. |

  | They both have an Iron Giant like narritve to them of two creatures being made by their creators with violence in mind and nothing else but having the door opened to them to CHOOSE to be individuals instead. Astral had his memory and programing altered, allowing him to learn what LIFE is and decide to emulate it, while Eliphas is the CONTRAST, he didnt have someone to change his programing or teach him about that kind of thing, its no wonder when he first see’s yuma he attacks despite yuma being a child, A Machine’s Mentality wouldnt care, because hes made to fight all chaos imbued things regardless of age or faction. |

TL ; DR : Astral seems to be designed to look as harmless as possible by the denizens so much so he doesnt physically have any form of self defense because his job is to blow up a planet, while Eliphas does have physical forms of self defense because his job is to actually punch you into submission thank you for indulging my brain worms.
