Banned From Dover (Temeraire Filk)
so turns out posting about my filk frustrations got the rhymes to unstick somewhat. It helps that the first and last two verses are ripped from the original wholesale, with only as many changes as are needed to make it setting-appropriate. The rest of it might still get tweaked when I put it on AO3, but for now:
When we flew into Dover Town in need of R & R The crew set out investigating brothel, pub, and bar We had high expectations of their hospitality But found they were no friends to aviators such as we
Chorus: And we're banned from Dover, every one Banned from Dover just for having a little fun We spent a jolly ground leave there for just three days or four But Dover doesn't want us anymore
Our dragon’s aims were complex and his methods dramatized We found him with conspirators of every breed and size The ministry was on the way—we had to get out fast At least this little uprising’s less bloody than the last
Chorus
Young Roland’s not the captain’s child; or at least so she claims But she’s got that same stubbornness a runnin’ through her veins Her chaperone swore upon her god she’d not be left behind And now they’ve shot a dozen men—and neither changed her mind!
Chorus
Our unlucky first officer got his own dragon egg She decks him out in jewels and gold no matter how he begs They robbed him here of every stitch; at least the day was warm He came back with new bruises in a borrowed uniform!
Chorus
The admiral’s at Dover and she was looking for a lay She found our captain ‘fore he was arrested for the day She flew home on Excidium with a bright and cheerful heart And the poor captain was scandalized with what he’d taken part
Chorus
Our runners and our middies soon found themselves in a bind Whilst borrowing a courier whom they thought wouldn’t mind They stole a dozen casks of wine from a boat they nearly sunk And now all Dover knows to fear a dragon getting drunk
Chorus
Our Captain was a navy man; his private life is quiet The admiralty arrested him for inciting beasts to riot We found him in the covert jail, broke in and pulled him free- Intact except for honor, and half his memory
Chorus
Our dear guide speaks the dragon tongues; the ferals speak right back He took some down on leave with him and we thought they’d learned some tact 'Til the local gang of herdsmen wrote and cursed upon his name They said they’d lost a hundred head of cattle when he came!
Chorus
A crew of frenchmen landed, and nobody seemed to care They marched into the nearest bar to announce that they were there Half our crew had cards inside, and invited them to play But the frenchmen only looked at us, and turned and ran away
Chorus
Our crew is the corps’ finest, and our dragon is our pride And where we go we tend to leave a trail a mile wide We're sorry about the treason and the riots and the fuss; At least we're sure that Dover won't be quick forgetting us!
Chorus
...Wonder why?

The Cranberries - Zombie 1994
"Zombie" is a protest song by Irish alternative rockband the Cranberries. It was written by the lead singer, Dolores O'Riordan, about the young victims of a bombing in Warrington, England, during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The song was released on 19 September 1994 as the lead single from the Cranberries' second studio album, No Need to Argue. While the record label feared releasing a too controversial and politically charged song as a single, "Zombie" reached number 1 on the charts of Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, and Iceland, and spent nine consecutive weeks at number 1 on the French SNEP Top 100. It reached number 2 on the Ö3 Austria Top 40, where it stayed for eight weeks. The song did not chart on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart as it wasn't released as a single there, but it reached number 1 on the US Billboard Alternative Airplay chart. Listeners of the Australian radio station Triple J voted it number 1 on the 1994 Triple J Hottest 100 chart, and it won the Best Song Award at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards.
The Troubles were a conflict in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to 1998. The Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), an Irish republican paramilitary organisation, waged an armed campaign to end British rule in Northern Ireland and unite the region with the Republic of Ireland. Republican and Unionist paramilitaries killed more than 3,500 people, many from thousands of bomb attacks. One of the bombings happened on 30 March 1993, as two IRA improvised explosive devices hidden in litter bins were detonated in a shopping street in Warrington, England. Two people; Johnathan Ball, aged 3, and Tim Parry, aged 12, were killed in the attack. 56 people were injured. Ball died at the scene of the bombing as a result of his shrapnel-inflicted injuries, and five days later, Parry lost his life in a hospital as a result of head injuries. O'Riordan decided to write a song that reflected upon the event and the children's deaths after visiting the town: "We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard – I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' – that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension." The song was re-popularised in 2023 after it was played after Ireland games at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. It was picked up by fans of the Irish team, with videos of fans singing the song in chorus accumulating hundreds of thousands of views on social media. This offended other Irishmen, who identified it as an "anti-IRA" anthem, and said that that the lyrics failed to consider their experience during the Troubles.
The music video, directed by Samuel Bayer, was filmed in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in the heart of the Troubles with real footage, and in Dublin. To record video footage of murals, children and British Army soldiers on patrol, he had a false pretext, with a cover story about making a documentary about the peace-keeping efforts in Ireland. Bayer stated that a shot in the video where an SA80 rifle is pointed directly at the camera is a suspicious British soldier asking him to leave, and that the IRA were keeping a close look at the shoot, given "the British Army come in with fake film crews, getting people on camera.” While "Zombie" received heavy rotation on MTV Europe and was A-listed on Germany's VIVA, the music video was banned by the BBC because of its "violent images", and by the RTÉ, Ireland's national broadcaster. Instead, both the BBC and the RTÉ opted to broadcast an edited version focusing on footage of the band in a live performance, a version that the Cranberries essentially disowned. Despite their efforts to maintain the original video "out of view from the public", some of the initial footage prevailed, with scenes of children holding guns. In March 2003, on the eve of the outbreak of the Iraq War, the British Government and the Independent Television Commission issued a statement saying ITC's Programme Code would temporarily remove from broadcast songs and music videos featuring "sensitive material", including "Zombie". Numerous media groups complied with the decision to avoid "offending public feeling", along with MTV Europe. Since it violated the ITC guidelines, "Zombie" was placed on a blacklist of songs, targeting its official music video. The censorship was lifted once the war had ended. In April 2020, it became the first song by an Irish group to surpass one billion views on Youtube.
"Zombie" received a total of 91% yes votes!

I'm gonna put it as simply and blatantly as possible.
Tumblr media
Russia in 2022 attacked another Eurovision participant and made a whole bunch of other contestant countries scared of being attacked next, after already having attacked a fellow competitor in 2008 -> Russia got banned from Eurovision
Ukraine in 2022 got attacked, had its civilians targeted intentionally, did not choose to start the war, has no record of past attacks against ESC contestants, and is not currently posing a threat to any other Eurovision participating country -> Ukraine did not get banned
Israel in 2023 got attacked, had its civilians targeted intentionally, did not choose to start the war, has no record of past attacks against ESC contestants, and is not currently posing a threat to any other Eurovision participating country -> Israel did not get banned
There isn't a double standard, except for people who insist on not following the geopolitical logic. Same ones who didn't use Ukraine's retaliation activities against Russia as justification to get Ukraine banned, but are doing that to Israel, usually with a side dish of false, hyperbolic accusations that have nothing to do with reality.
Also...
The only flags allowed are of participating countries and the pride flag. The American flag is therefore banned. The Mexican flag. The Japanese, the Korean, the Nigerian flags. The world doesn't actually revolve around Palestinians, they're not actually the ultimate victims, and honestly, it's offensive they're cast that way when there are conflicts far worse and bloodier than the current war in Gaza, not to mention it takes away attention and help from them, to make everything constantly about the Palestinians.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, this is supposed to be the rule. Outside the performance hall, but within the borders of the Eurovision village, a visiting Israeli comedian called Guy Hochman was assaulted for walking around with the Israeli flag. Swedish police intervened, but they didn't act against the anti-Israel protesters who attacked and spat on Guy, they stopped him from openly carrying the Israeli flag. He asked why are they not allowing it, even though the flag is of a participating country, in accordance with the rules. He was told it's too dangerous. He then asked why are Palestinian flags not being removed, if they're banned according to contest rules, and was told that in Sweden, freedom of speech is above anything else. He was also grilled about whether he's Jewish by the Swedish policemen. Why was his flag denied, then? Why was his freedom of speech not protected, why was his Jewish identity a matter for questioning?
Another thing, the Swedish singer who ended up in third place in 2011 Eric Khaled Saade went on a childish rant crying over the Palestinian flag being banned (again, as if it's the only one), and as he was invited to perform this year, he got on stage live with a kaffiyeh tied to his left hand, even though he knew that was considered political, and therefore not allowed. Once more, he whined about it as if this is specifically against Palestinians, but you know what? The dress designers wanted to have a Star of David on the dress of the Israeli singer. She's a Jewish woman, that's a Jewish symbol, so why not represent her identity? But they were told that's "political." And you know what the Israeli delegation did? Followed the rules. You won't see the Star of David on Eden's dress. When they were told not to wear the hostage pin, because that's "political"? They followed the rules. When the Israeli song writers were told that their song, expressing Israeli pain, is "too political," what did they do? Followed the rules, they changed the lyrics. And you don't hear them crying about it all over social media and the news.
Not to mention, Eric Saade had no problem kissing the ass of Israeli fans back in 2011, when he competed and needed their votes. Was his dad less Palestinian back then? By the way, Israeli fans didn't hold his identity against him, they didn't demand he be questioned about Palestinian terrorists, or what his stance is on Hamas, they didn't drag politics into it, they focused on music and culture connecting people across borders and identities (as the ESC is supposed to do), and Israel gave its 12 points in both the semi and the final to Eric Saade that year. How did he repay those fans? Campaigning to ban Israel (and therefore them) from the contest, because he's incapable of seeing them as people first, and political rivals second, or maybe even (God forbid!) not at all...
It all smells like hypocrisy to me. But we all know this post won't get anywhere near the exposure (through likes and reblogs) that the lying, self-centered, hypocritical anti-Israel posts do. Doesn't matter. I'll still be here, speaking the truth.

. . .
It's not every day that you meet your idol in a public place. Well– meet isn't exactly the right word for it, bump into would fit much better in this case. And in such a case as this, it was literal.
“Oomph–!”
You squeaked as your face hit a very sturdy and –dare you say it– deliciously muscular chest; a blur of pale gray and black clouds your vision as you accidentally dropped your bags from the impact.
A startled ‘Oh’ tickles your ears and causes you to look up from the mixed colors that swirled in your gaze; being met with the sight of someone wearing a baseball cap and face mask—. Wait a moment–! Is that who you think it is!? Holy fuck, it is! It's really him! Thee Luka; winner of the Belobog Boxing Championship!!
You were practically vibrating in place; Luka, your idol and celebrity crush, was standing right before you! Never before have you been so close to him; you can even see the stitching of his ripped tank top from this distance. And you touched him–! With your face!! Your face was on his body!!!
“Ah– Wait a minute– I recognize you; you're always in the front row at my matches. You cheer the loudest.”
The red-headed boxer chirps with enthusiasm as he extends his hand out and gives you a friendly ‘pat’ on the shoulder that causes you to lose your balance just slightly.
However, he was quick to steady you with the same hand and shot you a look of concern. The feeling of his thumb gently caressing the bare skin of your shoulder breaks you from your inner fanboying as you notice him looking deeply into your eyes. A fierce warmth takes over your face as you realize that you haven't said anything at all.
“I‐I'm– Yes! I mean– Y‐you– You're Luka!”
You barely managed to squeak out before his large hand closed around your mouth and he frantically looked around in panic.
The raspberry-haired man chuckles softly –almost nervously– as he turns his gaze back to you and away from its previous place over his shoulder. His calloused hand still tightly clamped over your mouth; pressing your back into a nearby wall that was shadowed by the open floor balcony walkway of the second floor. Your body can only warm as your hands that rested against his sturdy chest out of reflex subtly feel the taller man up almost reflexively. Your fingers run between the seams between his pectoral and abdominals, they're deep and enchanting, and his torso is lined with plateaus of muscle.
“You like ‘em?”
Luka almost groans out; he seems to have moved to almost cage you beneath him. Resting his forearms on the wall above your head, shading you from the mall's overhead fluorescent lights as he gazed at you with dark hooded eyes.
Your eyes shyly climb from his abdomen to his chest, then his neck, jaw, lips, and nose until they finally stop at his own blistering hot azure eyes. The boxer almost looked like a feral animal that was preparing itself to pounce. Pounce on you. Holy shit– your idol is looking at you like he wants to eat you, but, of course, you can't bring yourself to dislike it at all. I mean, who would? Somehow though, being lusted after by the man you practically dedicated a whole room in your house to made you feel a lot more confident.
“Mh– yeah, I like ‘em. Wanna feel ‘em without all this in the way; can I?”
The whisper leaves your lips before you can even process that you're still in the mall, in public,  surrounded by strangers as you tug at his shirt with one hand and curl the fingers of the other around the belt that held his pants up.
Maybe that was how you ended up here– face pressed up against the bathroom stall as you're taken from behind.
Then again, you can't remember too much anymore, only the sound of Luka's sexy groans and the feeling of his cock stirring your guts around with no rest in sight. You can't even remember when you started or how long you've been at it as your brain was practically soup at this point. Your stiff legs shook with overexertion; trembling and buckling under your body weight with each harsh thrust from behind you.
The sound of slurred whines bounced around in the echoey public restroom; you swear you can't even recognize that it's your voice until the boxer chuckles and makes a comment about it.
“Fu–uck, you're so cute, baby boy. Keep makin’ those sweet little sounds for me.”
The raspberry-haired man groaned through gritted teeth; picking up the pace yet again and abusing your already ruined, puffy hole.
Amongst your sweet mewls and the boxer's pleasure groans, the faint sound of footsteps enters the bathroom and then abruptly pauses. The intruder stands rigid with shock as they hear the sloppy sounds of fornication and see the two pairs of feet and a small puddle of creamy liquid under the partition of the fourth stall. With a quiet ‘Oh my God’ they quickly leave with a boner straining in their pants and are met with a knowing glance from a few other mall shoppers outside the bathroom.
A broken moan rips from your throat as Luka takes a good handful of your hair and uses it as leverage to deliver more monstrous thrusts. The crisp sound of the skin of his hips ramming against the flesh of your ass steeped in the room; so loud that it could be heard from outside if someone was close enough. So deep, so rough, so hot; you felt like you were dying.
“No-oo mor-r-r-re!”
Your lips trembled as you begged pathetically; tears poured from your eyes that were squeezed shut from the sheer ferocity of the man behind you.
It was too much, it was just too much. This man is an animal! Did he expect you to be able to just walk home after this? To be able to stand? To even be coherent? One of your heavy arms limply hangs at your side, jolting and swaying with your body as you try to will it to reach for the locked stall door to no avail. There's no way this beast would let you go, he's still not satisfied.
“Oh, no baby, there's no stopping yet. Hah. You're my biggest fan, remember? I gotta give you the best of the best –ngh– as thanks for all of your support.”
Luka grins against your nape; uncaring that the two of you will certainly be banned from this mall after all those people report you to security.
It's fine, though; you both can just pick up where you left off at a hotel. But, for now, he has to give his biggest fan the most memorable meeting that he can, and luckily, he's nowhere near tired yet.
. . .

A North Korean propaganda song extolling Kim Jong Un as “a great leader and a friendly parent” has gone viral on TikTok, with mashups and dances racking up millions of views, leading to South Korea banning the tune due to “psychological warfare.”
Seoul’s media regulator on Monday announced it was blocking access to versions of “Friendly Father,” the cheery propaganda hit that became an unlikely social media sensation.
The song was unveiled in April during a nighttime concert to mark the completion of a housing project in the capital Pyongyang, according to North Korean state-run Korean Central News Agency.
Its lyrics praise Kim [...] as “a great leader and a friendly parent,” and the music video depicts North Koreans enthusiastically belting out the orchestral song proclaiming that Kim “takes care of us with affection.”[...]
The song went viral after content creators around the world used it to make their own edits of the music video adding dances and unserious captions to their own short one-minute clips on the platform, garnering over 2 million views.
“This isn’t Gen Z suddenly declaring allegiance for the regime,” said Alexandra Leonzini, a Cambridge University scholar conducting research on North Korean music.
“They’re laughing at the regime not with the regime.”
Nonetheless, South Korean security officials came down on the parodies. The Korea Communications Standards Commission decided to block 29 videos of the song, following a request from Seoul’s National Intelligence Service. But some versions of the song on YouTube were still accessible to users in South Korea as of Wednesday.[...]
The ban was not a surprise, as the country’s National Security Act blocks access to North Korean government websites and media, restricting exposure to Kim’s autocratic regime and penalizing behaviors promoting its authoritarian and nuclear-armed neighbor.
