spoke the absolute most fucking gorgeous bangladeshi woman on the train just now. literally she looks like a marble sculpture. An absolute Galatea of a lady. I can't comprehend how people could ever envision American/Western ideas of beauty as all-consuming and universal. I can think of so many haute couture ateliers who would scoff at the idea of a woman like her as being beautiful enough to warrant being on the runway and like. Full offense Versace but this is a skill issue by now

i love glass ceiling feeling BUT can we talk about how the fact that Saira’s narrative struggle of not being able to write a song about the systemic oppression of Muslims is left unresolved? glass ceiling feeling is the resolution to the band’s interpersonal conflict with each other, and them ditching the label is the resolution to their interpersonal conflict with the label. but saira never finishes her song. the band does not become expressly political. the conflict is unresolved and that bothers me more than it should. throughout the show we the audience are supposed to read the show’s implied political commentary (fish and chips being an acknowledgment of colonialism, jokes about people associating them with terrorists, Saira’s Bangladeshi children comment). this show exists in a world where the so-called war on terror, imperialism, disenfranchisement and genocide of Muslims exists and the characters are aware of it. ngl I was shocked when the characters criticized saira for her songwriting. i want to see lady parts respond to sister squire’s criticism and mature artistically but i won’t get it bc of tv censorship 😭😭

More desi!Jon headcanons based off me and @melandrops' conversation:
(assuming Jon is mixed Bangladeshi on his dad's side and white on his mum's side and he was raised by his white grandma, so he doesn't have very many ties to his culture)
He makes chai only on special occasions like on the rare occasion he has guests or maybe on his grandma's birthday or something, I feel like he doesn't have the energy to put the effort in every day and feels too guilty to like treat himself so it's only really for other people he'll make it
He hangs a Bangladeshi flag in his flat mostly out of a feeling of duty, like he needs to have some ties to the country
He owns one singular kurta, a couple of diwas and some old crusted pink coloured powder for holi stashed in the back of a cupboard somewhere
He has one family picture in his bedroom of his parents in a sari and a kurta, holding him as a baby and thats it
He makes biryani in the same way makes chai - only for special occasions and if he had to feed people
A lot of people have a recipe passed through the family but it's never written down, it's always just shown to you but obviously he didn't have that experience so he learned how to cook his desi meals from random Indian ladies on youtube
He has a meagre spice cupboard and feels guilty about it (he just doesn't indulge himself when he cooks, he cooks something that's fast and will fill him up, rather than looking for flavour, partly cause he doesn't have the energy and partly cause he doesn't think he deserves to be properly spent time on)
He has an atrocious accent when saying desi things, which the other desi coworkers make fun of him for slightly (Tim, Martin) so he avoids mentioning that kind of stuff in front of them

This is a classic case of projection but to me being a black champion boxer who was selected by her country to represent them at the Olympics and then having her entire career and presence at the event called into question because some random white people thought she didn't belong there just reeks of the same racist attitude that led to my Bangladeshi father getting arrested and banned from the place he worked at because some white customer saw him carrying an unmarked box around the store and called in a bomb threat on him. he wasn't doing anything dangerous he was literally doing his job and he had been vetted by so many people and had worked there for Years, but some random white lady having a racist panic ended all of that and my father ended up in jail and getting sued for NO REASON...
I just can't help but feel that this is exactly like what happened to imane khelif, who had already appeared and lost badly on the world stage multiple times before, but suddenly when she starts actually kicking ass and beating white competitors Then a bunch of white people sound the alarm. They didnt care about her until they noticed her, and when they did her success caused tension. and because what white people have to say always takes priority over everyone else, suddenly her history doesn't matter anymore and all anyone is talking about is this controversy... and whether or not she should or should not be competing in women's boxing, I can't help but feel like the whole reason imane fell under scrutiny in the first place is because a few racist people went looking for dirt specifically to discredit her
#ok this is all very messy bc this event was a pretty formative part of my childhood#im a bit white to be talking about this so im sorry if it is tone deaf i just needed to write it out#im not saying its racist to talk about where intersex atheletes fit into sex segregated sports.#im just saying i think it matters that it was white people who called her sex into question after nobody in algeria did for 20+ years#i think it matters that it is russias word against algerias and i think it matters that most people seem to value russias word more

Shamima Begum has lost an initial bid to challenge the removal of her British citizenship at the Supreme Court.
The 24-year-old had requested permission from the Court of Appeal to take her case to the UK's highest court.
The government stripped her citizenship on national security grounds in 2019, leaving her stateless.
Ms Begum left London nine years ago aged 15 to travel to Syria and join the Islamic State group, or IS.
Earlier this year, three judges at the Court of Appeal unanimously dismissed her bid to regain her citizenship.
She now has the option to ask the Supreme Court directly for permission to have her case heard.
Delivering the Court of Appeal's rejection in February, Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr said: "It could be argued the decision in Ms Begum's case was harsh. It could also be argued that Ms Begum is the author of her own misfortune.
"But it is not for this court to agree or disagree with either point of view. Our only task is to assess whether the deprivation decision was unlawful. We have concluded it was not, and the appeal is dismissed."
Her lawyers have argued that the Home Office's decision to remove her citizenship was unlawful, in part because British officials failed to properly consider whether she was a potential victim of trafficking.
Ms Begum, born in the UK to parents of Bangladeshi heritage, was one of three east London girls who travelled to Syria in 2015 to support the IS group. She left with her friends Kadiza Sultana and Amira Abase.
Ms Sultana is thought to have died when a house was blown up. The fate of Ms Abase is unknown.
Ms Begum lived under IS rule for more than three years. She married a Dutch member of IS, who is currently held in a Kurdish detention centre, and lived in Raqqa, once a stronghold of the group. She had three children, all of whom have died.
She was found in al-Roj camp in northern Syria in 2019 following the defeat of IS, and remains there to this day.
Her lawyers say conditions in the camp have reached a "critical point", with "near starvation" and disease now seen daily.
"The fact of the matter is this - that Shamima, as with other British women and children, is arbitrarily detained in a prison camp in north east Syria," her lawyers said in a written statement on her behalf.
"It is not a refugee camp - those detained are unable to leave and the conditions have, with ever greater urgency, been categorised by every international body as well as by the UK courts in Shamima's case itself, as constituting torture and inhuman treatment."
Ms Begum has admitted knowingly joining a proscribed organisation. She said that she was "ashamed" to have done so and regretted it.

Today I had a driving lesson, and some random lady got upset and yelled at me for parking on the side of the road in front of her house. I freaked out a little and apologized, but my instructor brushed her off and told me to just drive away.
I asked him if I did anything wrong, and he said (in a thick Bangladeshi accent) "No, you are okay. All women are the major-generals of their driveways. You will understand when you have a driveway."
And then he paused, looked at me for a second with my masc clothing and rainbow earrings, and said "Are you women?"
The answer to this question is no, I'm not, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell the truth, so I just kind of hesitated, and he nodded and said "If you are not women, that's okay. You can still have a driveway. Maybe you can be the captain or something."

Henlo :3
I'm currently reading the Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher, and it was bugging me that I didn't know why Amir was flinching when Edna touched him, so (based on Akida's hijab and Amir's prayer rug) I looked into customs of Islam and learned some stuff and I just want to say thanks for having so many different kinds of lives in this book (: I always appreciate learning real world stuff in fun ways.
thank you so much for reading! I had a lot of help with Amir's character from Muslim friends who kindly answered my questions and/or read early drafts and gave me feedback. I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend a couple Muslim authors and their books*!
Adiba Jaigirdar is an auto-buy author for me! three of her books are queer YA romance - The Henna Wars, Hani & Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating, and The Dos and Donuts of Love (the last one is coming out in June) - but she also has A Million to One, which is a heist story set on the Titanic. that one just released in December, so I haven't read it yet, but I'm SO EXCITED for it. check out Adiba's books on her website.
Priyanka Taslim is a fellow 2023 debut whose book I looked forward to for ages, and it did not disappoint! The Love Match is pitched as a Bangladeshi-American YA romance that will appeal to fans of Jane Austen (and also it will appeal to tea-lovers everywhere). it has fake dating, complicated family dynamics, and a love triangle that really kept me guessing. Priyanka also has an adult novel, From Mumbai With Love, anticipated to release early in 2024, so add it on GoodReads now. check out Priyanka's website here.
Kataru Yahya is another fellow debut whose book is alas not out yet, but I can't wait to read it! Home Is a Silhouette is a loose, contemporary retelling of Beauty & the Beast that is set in Ghana. If you haven't seen the cover yet, be sure to take a look, because it's ridiculously gorgeous. add the book on GoodReads now, and check out Kataru's Linktree here. (she is also a poet, and some of her poetry is linked on Linktree if you're interested!)
Aamna Qureshi is the definition of "it's about the range": if you're looking for an author who can do contemporary, fantasy, long-form, short-form - look no further. The Lady or the Lion and The Man or the Monster (a YA fantasy duology retelling of the story "The Lady or the Tiger") are out now. keep an eye out for When a Brown Girl Flees (2023), If I Loved You Less (2024), and My Big, Fat, Desi Wedding (edited by Prerna Pickett, 2024) if you prefer contemporary! see more details on Aamna's website.
Khadijah VanBrakle is another fellow debut, and her book comes out next month! Fatima Tate Takes the Cake is recommended for fans of Elizabeth Acevedo and Ibi Zoboi (um, YES) and is yet another debut with an absolutely gorgeous cover that I'm obsessed with. if you like coming-of-age stories that are gritty yet hopeful, be sure to give this one a look. see more details on Khadijah's website!
*I write adult contemporary fantasy, and you'll notice this list is like. mostly YA contemporary/YA romance with a sprinkling of YA fantasy. that is because, as much as I love adult fantasy and writing in the adult fantasy space, most of what I read in general tends to be YA, and most of what I've read since the pandemic started leans romance (because low stakes and a guaranteed HEA are exactly what I have needed since the pandemic started).

there used to be a lot of bangladeshi newspapers that were lying around in my grandpa's house when I was a kid and sometimes I'd read them out of boredom I think they had a fiction section with short stories or something idk but one that I always think about is one about a lady in the slums who gave birth to an infant not too long ago but has nothing to feed it and after days it grows malnourished because she cannot even produce milk being severely malnourished herself and I think the baby caught some disease too idk what was the cause but the baby dies in her arms she takes a few moments to mourn her child before thinking she has to make dinner that night with some lentil soup and rice bc it's all she can afford and it ends
#taha talks#idk why but that story was ingrained into my brain for so long#i dont think i can read bengali as good anymore but i kinda wanna re read it

by Subhash Chandra Agrawal After shocking incident of adulterated ghee found used in holy prasad of laddoos in Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam during earlier regime, it has become necessary to take preventive steps to ensure that such adulterated desi ghee may not be used by confectioners and eateries which should be directed to place bigger-sized photos of pack-labels of desi ghee used by them depicting clearly brand-name and other information of the manufacturer of desi ghee on their sign-boards. This information should be mandatorily shared by them with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). It is quite common that harmful oils and animal-facts are widely being used at road-side dhabas, and in some eateries in name of butter. Central and state governments should take necessary steps whereby such spurious ‘butter’ may not be possible to be used. Taking cognisance of alleged incidents of spitting and mixing urine in eatables in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath rightly directed that the name and address of operators, proprietors and managers should be displayed at all food centres making it compulsory for chefs and waiters to wear masks and gloves, besides making installation of CCTV cameras compulsory in hotels and restaurants. Even minister Vikramaditya Singh in Congress-led Himachal Pradesh government desired to follow the same pattern. With so many Rohangias and Bangladeshis present in India, such steps should be mandatorily taken by all states keeping aside pseudo-secular politics. Celebrating World Vegetarian Day on 1st October Central government should propagate vegetarianism on lines of Yoga internationally by ensuring only vegetarian food to be served in all government-parties. Even foreign dignitaries will find it a welcome change to taste renowned Indian vegetarian food at a time when Indian housewives are supposed to be best cooks amongst ladies world-wide. Sale of meat is already prohibited in accordance with sentiments of majority Hindus in holy cities like Ayodhya and Mathura. Vegetarianism is spreading fast worldwide with celebration of World Vegetarian Day on every 1st October. Government of India should approach United Nations to celebrate 1st October as Vegetarian Day on lines of Yoga Day. Central and state governments should order that hotels, restaurants and eateries may have separate kitchens and kitchen-wares to cook non-vegetarian food, prominently displaying about adoption of such practice inside and outside their premises. Such display will rather increase their business because of increase of vegetarian clientele preferring separate kitchens and kitchenware for cooking vegetarian food. Branded packed food-items should replace freshly cooked food in schools and trains News reports frequently appear about insects, frogs, lizards, rats etc. apart from sub-standard raw-material like rice and pulses with lot of foreign ingredients reportedly used to cook mid-day meal in schools. There have been many incidents of kids falling ill after taking fresh cooked meal in schools. Only packaged food preferably baked food should be served in schools to ensure hygiene. It will also take care of peculiar food-habits of some children like avoiding onion and garlic. Thirty Parliamentarians once appealed to government for packaged biscuits procured from reputed companies recommended by Mumbai-based Biscuits Manufacturers Welfare Association (BMWA) to replace cooked food in Mid-Day meal-scheme. Government can save money by inspiring big manufacturers of packaged food to sponsor the programme by getting publicity of their trade-name in return. Even corporates can be asked to fund Mid-Day meal scheme with packaged food supplied under Corporate-Social-Responsibility, mandatory for big companies. Extend scope of IRCTC widely to prepare packaged food for schools and trains Units of Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) should be set up in every district of the country which may also produce baked items.
Packaged food-products prepared by IRCTC can be provided as mid-day meal in schools and for train-passengers where also there are frequent complaints in freshly cooked meal. IRCTC products then can be sold in open market also for developing a healthy competition with private companies to sell quality products at economical prices. Initial funding required for such mega-project of IRCTC can be generated through long-term tax-free bonds. It will also provide large scale employment even in rural areas preventing migration to cities in search of employment. Adulterated Honey Supreme Court on 19.04.2021 had sought comments of central and state governments on reports of adulterated honey being marketed in India even in popular brands of renowned companies where some special type of sugar imported from Chine mixed with honey bypasses tests as required by Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI). Research done by Centre for Science and Environment says that only three out of 70 samples of honey being marketed in India could pass internationally accepted NMR spectroscopy test. If the report is correct, then it is playing with lives of Indian people because diabetic people consume honey because honey is otherwise considered safe for diabetic people. FSSAI should adopt internationally accepted NMR spectroscopy test for giving sale-permission for honey. Co-operative giant Amul ranking 15th in top 100 most valuable food brands in the world – needs to be encouraged further in larger public-interest of India It is a matter of pride for cooperative sector in India when Amul ranked 15th in top 100 most valuable food-brands in the world according to the Brand Finance Food and Drink 2021 report with private-sector Britannia being the only other Indian company to find 54th place. Such units in public or co-operative sector should be encouraged by providing government-facilities including subsidized land to set up more units in a manner that other Indian companies both in private and public sector may be motivated to be likewise ranked internationally. Successful bid of Amul to get Delhi Milk scheme (DMS) on lease should be accepted, may be after some increase in lease-amount through table-negotiation to effectively utilize national resources and to eliminate heavy recurring loss of DMS to the public exchequer. Managements of public sector IRCTC and Mother Dairy should be pulled for not finding place in top 100 most valuable food-brands in the world despite heavy public-money invested in these public-sector companies. Dual pricing of water-bottles and food-items must not be allowed Famous branded companies marketing in packaged water-bottles and cold drinks have dual pricing for same product, one normal price for open-market sale, and the other higher one to be sold in flights, theatres and five-starred hotels etc. This anti-consumer practice must be stopped. Best is to set up water-bottling plants of Rail-Neer marketed by IRCTC in different parts of the country. Wastage of food: Serving food in marriage-related functions be banned At a time when a large number of people in India are deprived of food in present era of heavy prices of vegetables and other food-items, it is indeed a matter of great regret that large quantity of food is wasted in marriage-related functions. Even in buffet-system, people often take food-items much more than consumed throwing large quantity of food-items as waste. There should be a ban on serving food in marriage-parties. Only soft drinks and beverages should be allowed. It will also make marriage-functions affordable by common people. Writer is Guinness World Record Holder for writing most letters and RTI Consultant
