Scott Yoder is a Seattle, Washington songwriter who clearly loves David Bowie and Ray Davies. Listening to 2022 release "Wither on Hollywood & Vine" you can't help but feel a 1960s/1970s nostalgia.
But, this doesn't sound at all like someone who's trying to recreate a sound. Rather, like The Tyde or The Lemon Twigs, he's using his skills and influences to help add to the genre of glam/rock/garage.
Yoder has releases on Annibale Records, Burger Records and a new release due on Cruisin' Records.

329: Marvelous Darlings // Single Life
Single Life Marvelous Darlings 2011, Deranged (Bandcamp)
One of the best pop-punk / power pop records I’ve ever heard, full stop, Single Life collects eight double-sided singles recorded between 2007 and 2010, the Darlings’ complete studio output. The lineup: vocalist Ben Cook, one-time ancillary guitarist in Fucked Up and veteran of one in every three early ‘00s guidance counselor-bait hardcore bands in Toronto; guitarist Matt DeLong, co-star of many of said bait bands; bass player “Marvelous” Mark Fosco; and drummer John Sirdevan. Cook’s discography alone has more writing on it than a stall at Sneaky Dee’s (well, maybe not that much) but none of these guys ever consistently struck gold the way they did with the Darlings’ charmed run.
youtube
Cook was clearly fond of the singles format (he also released like a dozen under his Young Guv alias during the same period), and it has a wonderful sharpening effect for a pop-punk songwriter (and for the record, these songs were group efforts)—there’s nowhere on a 7” to hide if a song doesn’t bang. As a result, every song on Single Life feels like the band is swinging for the fences, trying to make this one the anthem they’d be remembered for. Even though I’ve heard the album a million times since my friend Meghan tipped me to it a few years back, I have trouble picking consistent favourites—every hook makes its case to be the one you’ll be humming all day, but then another undeniable should-be hit pulls up and your brain is placed in a terrible bind.
Marvelous Darlings was obviously conceived of as a throwback to the heyday of guitar pop (I get tasting notes of Cheap Trick, Green Day, Flamin’ Groovies, Mick Jones Clash, the Rezillos, Teenage Head, Weezer…), and there wasn’t a ton on ‘00s alternative radio in this style, but I dunno—I think there is something transcendent about the way this group approached their craft that could’ve resulted in a genuine hit with just a little luck on their side. (A Canadian hit anyway.) I’m probably crazy, but choruses like “Friend of a Friend,” “Shoot the Piano Player,” and “I Don’t Wanna Go to the Party” make even a pessimist like me a little starry-eyed.
I’m hot and cold on Cook’s other projects, though if I were to pick and choose the highlights from all of them I’d probably have a mean double-album compilation on my hands; Marvelous Mark has a smattering of pretty good lo-fi solo releases, and every once in a while really nails it; of the others, I have no news. So it goes: we’ll always have these magic singles.

There will be $80 reissues of Avicii and Far East Movement on vinyl. People will buy Anti Social Social Club shit again. The top indie label will be called Burger Records Except Not Run By Creeps.
In like 3 to 5 years Gen Alpha is gonna try and revive 2010-2014 "YOLO SWAG" culture the same way the youngest zoomers are reviving "teh penguin of doom" lolsorandom humor from 2007. They'll buy Odd Future hoodies at extremely marked up prices on DePop, listen to Skrillex and make montage parodies, and talk about "the ratchet aesthetic" the same way people today talk about Frutiger Aero. The song "Stick Stickly" by Attack Attack! becomes something that people listen to unironically.
Slenderman will make a comeback around this time. The year after this, Little White Lies publishes an article titled "Were We Wrong About the Slender Man Movie?" leading to critical reevaluation of the once-maligned Hollywood creepypasta film. A non-binary teenager from Delaware named Squid becomes an Oscar nominee for their metafictional mockumentary about the origins of the Jeff the Killer image.
Also in the year after this, the long-forgotten "Tumblr hipster" aesthetic returns. Neo-vaporwave becomes the hot new sound on VR Chat dance clubs.

so like are we done with the idea that james is a victim of the internet harassment mob or whatever you guys like to call it when in reality no one like forced him to be part of the public eye again. he had multiple times to disengage but he threw himself head first into the spotlight with some half assed apology where he used his dead mom, illiterate dad, and like 293 mental illnesses that he was in the right to do a widdle plagiarism but it’s not his fault! it’s everyone else’s fault for not being nice to him about it!!! how dare these people bring these issues to the public not thinking how james would feel about it! like ppl are forgetting there was notable period of time james went off air entirely. and every time he’s jumped back it’s always attempts to paint himself as the victim.
like be real for a second if anyone was weaponizing the internet harassment machine it was james somerton. he knew what he was doing when he posted that note. he knew the shit his victims would get for having the crime of (checks notes) voicing out their issues with him. he knew there’s people out there who are foaming at their mouths to use anything they can get their hands on as a “gotcha!” at hbomberguy (right wing people yes, but don’t act like it’s just them i’ve seen plenty of lefties trying to prove they’re superior to harry). they don’t give a shit about james, not really. he’s the dude who hbomb did a “hit piece” (yes that’s a term i’ve seen people use) and that’s what matters.
not to mention the writing that’s also very clearly targeting nick who’s basically cut ties with him at this point. james pushed all the burden on nick by saying it’s their fault, actually. he’s one of the co-writers and everything going to shit was nick’s fault when they had the audacity to move. james is faultless! with james still trying to monetize stolen content on the blatant lie that he’s doing this for nick’s sake as a portfolio. acting as if nick isn’t an sentient human being who could upload their own content, as if nick would even want to be associated with james at this point. this isn’t a teenager being harassed for an honest mistake, this is a 35-year old con artist who’s stolen hundreds of thousands and peddled the most vile shit as actual history but realized he was in deep shit and weaponizes very serious mental health issues as a “i’m just a poor little gay baby!! my alter ego did it!!!”
for the record if you’re among the people who tried to wash down james’ crimes as “he just did plagiarism!! it wasn’t that bad of a crime!” fuck you, man. i’m not kidding.
the fact i’ve witnessed people whitewash his acts of racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, antisemitism and misogyny (in fact i’m probably still missing a few things here), and say he’s being harassed by the internet just because he stole articles makes it so clear they have no fucking idea what they’re talking about. his shit isn’t fucking erased just bc he realized that he has to handle the consequences. he’s grasping at anything he can at this point to make sure that even if he’s not coming back, he’s sure as hell trying to take anyone he fucking can down with him.
he doesn’t get a second chance to be a content creator at this point. he doesn’t get to show himself to do better. he needs to fucking leave. and if he tries to publicly make himself the victim then he better know that he’s going to get public backlash.
if anything situation proves to me that he can never be trusted with a public platform ever again because he will immediately guilt people into feeling sorry for him.
#i’m going to be bitchy about this for the record#james somerton#hbomberguy#the funniest option is if james fakes his death like a fourth time and someone takes a pic of him in like a burger king or something.#updated i’m not 100% sure on nicks pronouns but i’m using they them just in case#update 2: the way i was proven fucking right immediately after posting this. you people are not real.

This boomer opinion that "my kids deserve no inheritance, I'm going to spend it all on jetskis and cruises, they should just work hard like I did uwu" is so funny to me because this is the same generation who'll constantly berate the childfree about "leaving behind a legacy" and it turns out the legacy these boomers are leaving behind is their children struggling with lifelong poverty during the worst financial times since The Great Depression, something that their own parents went through and subsequently left these boomers an inheritance so as to avoid.
#and this whole “my kids should just work hard like I did” thing is also pretty funny#bc the statistics literally show every generation since the boomers has worked harder than the previous#but with no increase in wages#boomers didn't work hard to accumulate their wealth#they accumulated wealth by being born in the wealthiest time in recorded history#do boomers really think they worked harder than their own parents who survived The Great Depression?#the silent generation really was the best imo#they actually did struggle like millenials struggle today#& when they did pull themselves up by the bootstraps they left their boomer kids an inheritance to ensure they'd never struggle with poverty#the silent gen really did protect boomers from hardship so thoroughly these ingrates don't even understand what poverty is#they don't even recognise the legacy their own parents left them to protect them from poverty#they're willing to destroy their own parents' legacy and throw their kids into the fire#all because they don't recognise the privilege of living through the easiest financial time in history#the poverty of their day probably could be cured with a job flipping burgers#so they think that's still the case#they have no idea what their own parents protected them from and what they're obliviously throwing their own children into#childfree#anti natalism

A couple of weeks ago I posted about the new album from Permissive Rot - Brian Carver's (formerly of Christmas Island - San Diego, California) new band. I'm really, really enjoying the album - one of my favorite releases this year. I learned that Brian was also part of another San Diego based band Teenage Burritos.
Aside from Carver and Lucy Wehrly from Christmas Island, Kevin Gist (Plateaus) and Andreas Lagerström (Holograms) also lend a hand. Teenage Burritos is definitely a two-sided album. The first side is more insistent punk in the Kleenex/Liliput or Blondie vein. The 2nd side is more post-punk. Really, after the Black Flag cover, this gets more varied and nothing shows this better than "Kamikaze" (guest vocals from Pall Jenkins of The Black Heart Procession/Three Mile Pilot).
This was a joint release from Volar and Burger Records.
