fun fact: it is estimated that around 100 million of these crabs live on christmas island alone!

A Christmas Island red crab on its home island, south of Indonesia. Each year at around this time, the red crabs travel from the forest to the coast, where they dig a burrow to mate. Their migration has been delayed this year due to a lack of rain.

Anyhow, Today You Learned about Christmas Island Crabs!

Christmas Island belongs to Australia, but it's a ways off from that mainland, in the Indian Ocean, discovered on Christmas Day in 1643 (hence the name).

Christmas Island red crabs need to be born in the ocean, but they live in the island's forests. So in the autumn, when it's time to lay eggs, the crabs embark on a mass migration all the way across the island to the coast, and they won't let anything--trees, rocks, buildings, cars, people--get in their way. They'll just crawl over it. And when those eggs hatch, and those little crabs get old enough? Then they walk the way back to the woods.

As you can imagine, this causes problems. A bunch are run over when crossing roads (and it turns out their exoskeletons can pop tires!). But there are efforts to try to make sure people leave them alone--crab x-ing signs, and crab bridges around roads so that they have a safe place to travel.

Sadly, there's an invasive ant species that's been wrecking havoc on the population, so the crabs are a bit in trouble.

Christmas Island Blue-tailed skink (Cryptoblepharus egeriae), ink and oil pastel on coloured cardstock.

These skinks were endemic to Christmas Island, Australia, but are now extinct in the wild due to introduced predators. They are gorgeous little creatures, and from what I understand there exists breeding programs to attempt to reestablish their wild populations.

I'll admit I didn't know of their conservation status when I was drawing this one, I just thought they were a good multi-coloured subject to draw on this nice teal paper.

I have another skink coming your way tomorrow, they're very fun to draw all contorted and slithery :D
