On 13th August 1907 Scottish architect, Sir Basil Spence, was born.

Spence was born in Bombay, India, his education began at the John Connon School, operated by the Bombay Scottish Education Society, he was then sent back to Scotland to attend George Watson's College in Edinburgh from 1919–1925. He enrolled at Edinburgh College of Art in 1925, studying architecture.

In 1929–1930 Spence spent a year as an assistant, along with William Kininmonth, in the London office of Sir Edwin Lutyens, whose work was to have a profound influence on his style, where he worked on designs for the Viceroy's House in New Delhi, India.

While in London he attended evening classes at the Bartlett School of Architecture under A. E. Richardson. Returning to Edinburgh College of Art in 1930 for his final year of studies, he was appointed a junior lecturer, despite the fact that he was still a student. He continued to teach there until 1939.

Basil Spence is arguably the most internationally renowned 20th-century architects, known principally for his breath-taking work rebuilding Coventry Cathedral. Spence was an eclectic architect whose work ranged from vernacular-styled fisherman’s dwellings in Dunbar to opulent traditional country houses to ultra-modern pieces like the Edinburgh University library. He has been compared to Robert Adam by some for his detailed attention to interiors. Some of his work might have been criticized but my favourite of his in Edinburgh has stood the test of time as other buildings of the 60’s and 70’s have been pulled down. The Scottish Widows Building at Dalkeith Roads on the south side of Edinburgh is in my opinion beautiful, it’s hexagonal bronze-tinted glassy exterior with the water reflecting the sun onto it at times and of course the backdrop of Arthur’s seat helps. The views out to Arthur’s seat and Edinburgh on the upper floors must be a joy for those that work there.

Although known for his modern work, which isn’t to everyone's liking some of his designs are more classical, like Glenwood at Glenlockhart Road, Edinburgh as seen in pic three, and Murrayfield Golf Clubhouse in the next photo. The other photos are of the man himself and Coventry Cathedral.

It one thing to joke sbout suicide i jniw im guilty of imptoper humpur regarding it. But ive dudfered so i can get away with it. Lasagna rolls in rose Alfrdo. Lasagna Noodles (16), Ricotta cheese (24 oz.), Eggs (2), Oregano (1 tbls.), Basil (1 tbls.), Parmesan cheese (2 cups), Garlic powder (dash), Kosher Salt (Dash), Black Pepper (Dash), Heavy cream (16 oz.), Parmesan cheese (2 cups), Butter (8 tbls.), Tomato Sauce (14 oz.), Spinach (3 lbs), Garlic (2-3 cloves), Olive oil (dash).

Preheat oven to 365. Cook noodles as directed then lay flat on a pan. Make cheese: mix ricotta with egg, basil, oregano, salt, pepper, parmesan cheese & garlic powder. Make alfredo: bring heavy cream to boil, mix with parmesan, butter and tomato sauce. Make Spinach: Sautee in olive oil with garlic, salt & pepper until wilted, then let cool. In oven safe baking dish, ad some of the alfredo to bottom of pan. Spread ricotta and spinach on noodles and roll up. Place in baking dish. Top with more alfredo. Bake 30-40 minutes.

A Thanksgiving Tale

In terms of pettiness, welp, this is pretty petty. Yadda, Yadda, Yadda

Thanksgiving was held at my house three days ago. It was the first year it has been at my house since my MIL moved to a senior living apartment. I have two sisters in law. One is good-GSIL and one is a bitch- BSIL. Well, BSIL actually made all the arrangements about who was to bring what. The only thing we had to make is onions in roasted g garlic cream sauce (me) and apple pie (DH).

I said I wanted to make a bread stuffing (MIL makes a french-canadian meat stuffing). I also offered to cook one of the turkeys (I make the broth for the stuffing from a turkey neck) Well, BSIL threw a fit about this (all my work for three days! I guess I’ll just wait to see what Stinkypie wants to make (IN HER OWN HOUSE)blah, blah, blah. I told her that there’s nothing wrong with two stuffings and I thought to save my niece the trouble of cooking two turkeys. She kept yammering, so I told her to stop stirring the turd. Radio silence after that!

Thanksgiving day, were supposed to eat at two. BSIL and niece arrive at 2:45 with the turkeys, veg, and stock for the gravy. MIL has to leave by four, as she doesn’t like to drive in the dark. Because of all the dicking around over the making the gravy (I offered to help, BSIL said no one can touch niece’s gravy, then they went out to smoke a bowl for 25 minutes.) It is really good gravy-one of the ingredients is riced giblets-gives it a nice, rich flavor. We ended up sitting down to eat at 3:30. MIL has to leave at four, and as if it’s a signal, BSIL, her bf, niece and her bf MUST LEAVE! they dump their plates (my mother’s china) into the sink, without scraping or separating our the silver, then they attacked the leftovers and left. When the last guests left, I took stock-a hella messy kitchen, no mashed potatoes, no turnips, no stuffing (luckily I had made some stuffing muffins that they didn’t see) no white meat or carcass–just four turkey legs, a huge bowl of parsnips and…all of the gravy! They were in such a hurry, they neglected to take that good gravy home! Later BSIL asked me if niece had put some aside for her, I replied HAHAHAHA. The next day, I got our a big bowl, put some dark meat in it, sprinkled a stuffing muffin on top then poured about two cups of hot gravy on top. I had to take a picture of it and share my yummy ‘Thanksgiving soup” with the fam.
