A Massachusetts district attorney said Friday that his office is investigating Florida's decision last year to send flights filled with migrants to Martha's Vineyard.
Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois also threw his support behind a group of public officials from California and Texas calling for a federal investigation into the flights.
"I am conscious of my obligation to investigate any potentially criminal activity that occurs within my jurisdiction," Galibois said in a statement. "[I] am aware that immigrants were tricked and fooled into boarding planes that ultimately landed in Martha's Vineyard, a part of my jurisdiction. I believe this falls within my purview as District Attorney to investigate. Given that much of the information that I seek to review as part of my investigation falls outside of my jurisdiction, I stand behind California and believe in order for a full and proper investigation to occur, the Department of Justice must be involved. I stand ready to cooperate with the Department of Justice."
Two planes filled with undocumented immigrants landed on Martha's Vineyard last September, leaving the island scrambling to prepare emergency shelters to help them.
The office of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said it was responsible for the flights, with a spokesperson saying that night they were "part of the state's relocation program to transport [undocumented immigrants] to sanctuary destinations."
DeSantis, who is running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, has touted the flights to Martha's Vineyard in his campaign speeches, falsely claiming island officials "deported them the next day." In reality, they were brought to an emergency shelter on Joint Base Cape Cod before alternative housing was arranged.
Galibois' announcement comes a day before DeSantis will be on Cape Cod for a fundraiser.
In a class action lawsuit, migrants said unidentified people working with DeSantis had been "trolling streets outside of a migrant shelter in Texas and other similar locales, pretending to be good Samaritans offering humanitarian assistance."
The migrants said those people made false promises that if they were willing to board airplanes to other states, they would receive employment, housing, educational opportunities and other assistance.
They also said they were told they would be flown to Boston or Washington, D.C., but were dropped off on Martha's Vineyard without food, water or shelter.
DeSantis' move was widely panned by Massachusetts lawmakers as a "cruel stunt."
"History does not look kindly on leaders who treat human beings like cargo, loading them up and sending them a thousand miles away without telling them their destination," Rep. Bill Keating, D-Massachusetts, said in a tweet.
Earlier this summer, Florida also sent flights filled with migrants to Sacramento. California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta both likened the action to kidnapping.
In a letter earlier this month, Newsom and Bonta joined Sheriff Javier Salazar of Bexar County, Texas, to call on the U.S. Department of Justice "to investigate potential violations of federal law by those involved in this scheme."
Salazar's office announced last month that it had recommended criminal charges, including misdemeanor and felony counts of unlawful restraint. No suspects were named. The Sheriff had previously opened an investigation into the flights after saying the migrants were "lured." Charlie Baker, Massachusetts' Governor at the time, said he was supporting that investigation.

Usual Issues in Siding Repair and Preventing Them
It's not simple to keep your house appealing. It will be tough to keep the most visible portions of your home in good condition without a lot of effort and expert assistance. Outside coating is the first aspect that people observe about your property. On over 70% of newly built homes, Vinyl siding is used as the external covering. The deterioration of siding is the major reason our homes begin to seem old and worn out. Many homeowners often ignore these aspects.
You must always keep it in a visually appealing condition by preserving it in good condition if your home has vinyl siding. With the assistance of siding repair pros, achieving this aim will be simple. Here are some of the most typical siding repair Boston difficulties and how to avoid them.
Keep moisture at bay
Most homeowners are unaware of the fact that their siding plays a vital role in keeping moisture out of the house. But, your house will welcome moisture into the house exterior when your house has deteriorated or worn siding. The greatest approach to detecting moisture concerns early is inspecting your home's siding regularly. It is most likely due to moisture if you find the siding starting to warp or buckle.
As soon as you discover these issues, you should seek expert assistance. In most circumstances, they will advise you to replace the damaged siding that has allowed moisture to permeate the home's walls. These pros should have no trouble doing this task properly.
Deal with siding cracks quickly
Its easy maintenance and longevity are one of the major reasons behind homeowners preferring vinyl siding. Due to high sun exposure, your home's siding will get more brittle and weaken with time. If you hit this fragile siding with a loose rock while mowing your lawn, it may cause massive fractures.
These fissures cause damage to the underneath of the siding apart from being unsightly. The cracks will cause havoc and enable moisture to enter if the siding is insulated. This is why you should get cracks repaired as soon as they are spotted. Replacing the damaged side panel is the most effective technique to remedy this issue.
Fixing Noisy Siding
Does your siding create a lot of noise when the wind starts to blow? These sounds may be quite disruptive, thus siding repair Boston is critical. One of the most typical reasons for this issue is incorrectly placed fasteners. When there is an issue with the fasteners, you will often hear a rattling sound.
Attempting to pull down the siding to identify the source of the problem may cause more harm. This is why hiring skilled specialists to troubleshoot and resolve the issue is critical.
The money you pay these specialists will be worth it given how swiftly they can resolve the issue at hand.
In need of siding repair Boston? If you are experiencing any of the concerns listed in this article, it is time to call Islandroofingsiding for assistance.

Could we please have some fun facts about the great state of Massachusetts?
Massachusetts is by far the likeliest state in America to have a Nantucket. Several reports of at least one Martha's Vineyard and possibly even a Cape Cod have also emerged. If true, it would make Massachusetts the spiralliest state, as Cape Cod is basically the golden spiral of Capes as well as Cods.
Massachusetts has a rich history, which for some reason my old schoolbooks only date back to 1620 despite the area likely having existed before then. History in Massachusetts consists of tea parties, men with the last name Adams, towns also named Adams, and also Matt Damon, who was born Adam A. Adams.
Massachusetts also has a rich future, including the Boston Retro Speedrun Festival where the Super Mario 4:50 barrier will be broken, the Boston Phoning-In Music Festival where Ariana Grande will reveal her next new ethnicity, and the Boston Molasses Factory Grand Reopening, at which nothing at all will go wrong.

what, like it’s hard?, pt. one
“it’s just that… if i want to win a seat in congress by the time i’m thirty, i need to find someone who’s serious about my career. not some little elementary school teacher that cares more about his students than what he’s wearing on my campaign stops,” tommy tells steve, as they’re sitting in quite possibly the fanciest restaurant steve’s ever step foot in. the menu hadn’t even included any prices.
“but… i’m seriously in love with you.” steve feels like his whole world is falling apart. just last week he’d been so sure that tommy was getting ready to propose. he’d introduced steve to his family—they’d spent a week out on martha’s vineyard for a family reunion at which steve had met tommy’s great-grandmother, hands laden with rings as she’d winked when tommy had asked for a private conversation. steve had been so sure that conversation was about the family ring.
“and i love you too, baby, but look. you don’t want to have to leave your students for half the year to come on the campaign trail with me, do you?” tommy asks, not even really looking at steve. he continues to just eat his stupid dinner as if he’s not ripping steve’s heart out at this very moment.
and steve can’t help but think how silly this all is, because it’s not like tommy’s actually running for anything right now. steve doesn’t even teach yet, beyond the two days a week he does his student teaching. they’re only 22, they haven’t even graduated northwestern with their bachelors degrees! but tommy’s saying these things as if they’re all real, right now.
“and i’m off to harvard next fall. it’s not like we’ll stay together while i’m there and you’re still here, right?”
and the thing is, steve had actually thought he’d be going with tommy to boston. they’re both set to graduate in the spring, steve with his degree in education and tommy with a dual major in pre-law and political science. they hadn’t really ever talked about it, but they’d been together since the beginning of their sophomore year. so yes, steve had thought they’d still be together when tommy started at harvard law.
but now steve’s starting to feel extra stupid.
“so… what? you’re breaking up with me?” steve starts to feel his chest tightening, like he might cry. he can’t believe that two hours ago he thought he’d been getting ready for a proposal.
“don’t think of it as a breakup, stevie… think of it as a conscious uncoupling. we’re just moving in two different directions. i’ll be at harvard law next semester and you’ll be…” tommy gives him a look of slight disdain—steve has never seen tommy look at him like that. waitstaff? sure. his driver? absolutely. but it’s never been directed at steve before. “well, you’ll be teaching snot-nosed six year olds. we’re on different paths.”
and that’s what truly makes steve’s blood boil. his passion for teaching and education is one of his greatest qualities and he’d thought that had been part of the reason tommy loved him. he didn’t realize that tommy loved him in spite of that. he’s not gonna let some asshole like tommy montgomery hagan iii tell him he’s no good.
so he doesn’t respond. he just takes the linen napkin off his lap and throws it on his half-eaten steak dinner and marches out of the restaurant.
tommy doesn’t even follow him out.
~*~
“oh steve… i’m sorry,” robin says to him about an hour later while steve lays his head in her lap on their dingy couch.
“it’s not even that he broke up with me,” he explains through tears. “it’s that he basically said i was worthless. like i couldn’t do anything better than teaching. as if teaching isn’t even an admirable profession! where would he be without his teachers, huh? isn’t this all about going to stupid harvard? what does he think the professors there actually do? knit?”
“is this a bad time to tell you that i always kind of hated him?” robin says, maybe trying to get him to laugh. but it kind of surprises steve. he sits up, knocking her hands from where they’ve been carding through his hair in the process.
“you did?! no, you didn’t.” he searches robin’s face for a moment and then sighs. “why didn’t you say anything? you could’ve saved me a whole lot of wasted time.”
“babe, you were so gooey-eyed for that guy, nothing i said was gonna change that. a crowbar couldn’t have pried you away from him. but you have to know he was an asshole.” when steve stares at her blankly, she huffs. “steve, he used to offer to cover the whole tab when we went out. how often did he ever actually pay, even for his own drinks? he made poor jonathan cry the last time we were all here for game night, just because jonathan asked for clarification on the rules for pictionary.” steve is still staring at her. “he tried to stiff argyle by offering him a flight on his dad’s private jet instead of paying for his weed and we all know he doesn’t even have access to the jet. dude was cheap as fuck and not even nice about it.”
steve thinks about it. it was kind of true. tommy was a horrible tipper—steve usually laid down a couple of twenties when they went to dinner together when tommy wasn’t looking. he can remember more than a few times where the guy had sent their food back even though it had looked perfectly wonderful to steve. so… okay, maybe robin had a point.
steve tells her as much, then adds, “but he was always nice to me.”
robin snorts. “are you kidding? he’s stood you up so many times i can’t even remember all of them. remember that time he said his first impression of you was that you weren’t as hot as your pictures? who says that to the person they’re dating?”
steve groans and lays his head back down in her lap.
“okay, so maybe you have a point about that too. but i was gonna marry him, rob. what do i do now?” he knows he’s whining, but he feels just a little bit entitled to it right now.
“i don’t know, babe. get over it, i guess. welcome to the world of us singles. it sucks out here.” steve can hear the fondness in robin’s voice as she says it, but still. it does sting just a little.
they sit there in silence for a while, with robin running her hands through his hair again. it’s so soothing that he almost jumps out of his skin when she speaks again.
“hey, you know what would be super funny?” she’s laughing a little as she says it.
“what?” steve had been dozing just a little and his voice sounds muffled by fatigue.
“if you got into harvard and just showed up on the first day. imagine the look on his face.”
steve laughs at how ridiculous that sounds. like he could get into harvard. plus, he’s got teaching to think about. he doesn’t have a place yet, but he knows he’ll get one soon.
but as he sits there with robin’s hands stroking through his hair, he begins to daydream about how shocked tommy would be. about how he’d have no choice but to eat his words when steve proves himself by getting into one of the most competitive programs in the country. about how good it would feel to prove the bastard wrong.
“robin?” she hums in response. “you’re a goddamn genius.”
~*~
“dingus, are you sure you want to do this?”
the spring semester starts in three days. it’s their last semester at northwestern and there’s nothing but great big darkness on the horizon of steve’s future. he hasn’t slept in two days, busy studying, thick workbooks piled around around him at the kitchen table. he knows what he must look like, over-caffeinated with bruises under his eyes.
“i’m sure.” steve has his lsat exam in one week. “i have to take the exam this week. apps are due by march first.”
“no, steve, i don’t mean taking the test. i mean applying at all. it’s clearly more stress than it’s worth. do you even want to go to law school?” robin sounds concerned and normally steve would think it’s very sweet, but currently it does nothing but irritate him.
“i could,” he responds grumpily.
robin sighs. “i just mean… is this worth it?”
steve looks up then and sees her biting her lip, clearly worried about him. he puts his pencil down and stops the timer on his phone, giving her his full attention.
“this isn’t just about tommy.” robin gives him a skeptical look and it’s his turn to sigh. “it’s really not. maybe it started out that way, maybe it was just a stupid joke to get revenge on the asshole, but now it’s more than that. it’s proving that i can do something unexpected of me.” he swallows. “no one even believed i would get into college. i was just some stupid jock in high school who’d never amount to anything. and then i got in to northwestern and i was so shocked and happy. but i found out that my dad had actually pulled a bunch of strings. so i hadn’t gotten in on my own merits. he didn’t think i could. but now…” he runs a hand through his hair nervously. he’s never said any of this out loud before. “he’s not around now. there’s no one to help me. no safety net. if i can do this, it’ll prove something to me. something that maybe i don’t really believe yet.”
he expects robin to say something about external validation being a corrupting force and identity built on academic achievement being solely a losing game, but she doesn’t. instead, she sits down across the table from him and picks up a workbook.
“okay,” she says. “what do we have to do?”
~*~
“mail here?” steve calls out when he hears the front door close behind robin.
there’s a moment that feels like a pause. “yeah, it’s here.”
steve practically sprints from his bedroom to his living room. robin holds a single white envelope in her hand. steve all but snatches it from her.
his fingers move to rip it open, but then he hesitates. he thrusts it back towards robin. “i can’t,” he tells her. “you do it.”
her eyebrows shoot up. “you’re sure?” steve nods. he watches her rip the envelope open, bouncing on his feet. she scans the page and then she’s smiling.
steve grabs the paper from her. “oh my god?!” he yells. “oh my god!”
robin practically jumps into his arms. “179, baby! harvard law here we come.”
~*~
even after such a successful run at the lsats, there’s still the little matter of actually getting in to the school. steve’s only experience with the academic application process was with undergrad and it appears that applying for anything beyond a bachelors degree is an entirely different ball game. he’s so out of his depth that he’s forced to turn to grad school message boards for advice and tips of how to get in. it seems like everyone else is applying to a hundred different schools while steve’s only applying to one. he learns this is a terrible strategy for planning one’s future, but that doesn’t really matter to steve. for him, it’s harvard or nothing.
there are so many different parts of the application that it makes steve’s head spin. there’s the statement of purpose and the personal statement—the difference between those two requires robin’s careful and slow explanation about three separate times. then there’s the writing sample and the application and the recommendations and the transcripts and and and
but with robin’s help, steve completes each component and successfully sends his materials by the day of the deadline.
steve’s never been a patient person. no one on earth would accuse him of that, so even he can tell that he’s getting on robin’s nerves every day as he practically pounces on her when she returns from collecting the mail.
and then one day, finally, at the end of april, she comes through the front door and clutched in her hand is a big, thick white envelope emblazoned with the words ‘harvard law’ in bold, beautiful crimson red.
~*~
“last chance to back out,” robin says smiling as she swings herself up into the passengers seat of their rented u-haul.
“nah.” steve returns her smile as he slides his sunglasses from his hair onto his face. “let’s get out of this dump.”
and with that, they leave their first apartment behind, headed to the coast.
[wanted to finish this completely before posting but my benadryls kicking in and i have no self control. eventual steddie, promise! no tag list for this one, sorry!! it’s giving me anxiety on the other one lol absolutely not edited, if u see a typo no u don’t. i wrote this on my phone in a feverish frenzy. also, i originally invented someone for the role of warner but then i was like ‘IDIOT!!!!! why would u not choose tommy?????’ so if there’s a name in here that shouldn’t be, no there isn’t.]

Francis Lewis was born in Yarmouth, MA in 1730 as Deborah Lewis. Later he and his family moved to Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard and he began living as a man in 1764. He married a young woman named Anne Luce in November 1765 and they had at least five children together!
An article in the 1770 edition of the Boston Evening-Post stated that because Lewis was born "bearing a similarity of both Sexes, it was disputed what apparel it should be dressed in, but 'twas at last agreed to dress it in Women's."
Here he is in a 1790 census from Tisbury:
Tumblr media
Several notices were posted in New England newspapers upon his death.
In the Essex Register-January 22nd: "In Tisbury, (M. Vineyard) Mr Francis Lewis, aged 93—32 of which years he dressed as a woman, and was supposed to be such. After that, he took his proper apparel as a man, and passed the remainder of his life in the marriage state, and has left numerous descendants."
The Connecticut Courant -January 28th "At Tisbury, (M[assachusett]s.) Mr. Francis Lewis, aged 93—32 of which years he dressed as a woman, and was supposed to be such. After that, he took his proper apparel as a man, and passed the remainder of his life in the marriage state, and has left numerous descendants. The family has always deserved and received the respect of those who knew it."

yo welcome to Massachusetts! I’m doing my grad school in Western Mass, there’s a lot of pretty scenery in the fall if you need a break from the city at any point! Go to Northampton, great town and plenty of hiking trails in the area.
Then closer to Boston is Salem, which you should try to visit but NOT IN OCTOBER TOO MANY PEOPLE IN OCTOBER. Rockport is also a very good cape-side tourist-y town.
Good luck with everything!
That's exactly the area I live in :D
I'd love to visit Salem! We had to read the Crucible in high school so it's on the top of my wishlist together with Plymouth, Martha's Vineyard and Hyannis.

Two more illegal immigrants accused of crimes were arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Martha's Vineyard on the same day recently, the latest migrants apprehended on the affluent islands off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.
On Sept. 17, ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston team tracked down a 36-year-old Brazilian fugitive to Oak Bluffs who was wanted by his own country's authorities and skipped out on a 10-year prison sentence for drug trafficking, officials said.
"This fugitive was convicted of international drug crimes in Brazil, and instead of serving his debt to society, he chose to run and hide on Martha’s Vineyard," said ERO Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde.
"Our officers are the best in the world at finding people who don’t want to be found. ERO Boston will continue our mission to prioritize public safety by apprehending and removing egregious noncitizen offenders from our New England communities."
Wealthy, Liberal Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard See 6 Ice Arrests In One Month, Including Ms-13 Gang Member
The Brazilian was lawfully admitted into the country in Orlando, Florida, on March 7, 2020, but violated the terms of his legal admission, ICE said. However, unbeknownst to immigration officials who admitted him, he had been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison by a Brazilian court on May 10, 2012.
Also on Sept. 17, the agency arrested a 50-year-old Salvadoran national wanted by his own country's authorities for crimes against humanity who had been hiding out in the Martha's Vineyard town of Tisbury.
"This Salvadoran fugitive is wanted by authorities in his native country to face some extremely serious and disturbing allegations," Hyde said in a release, which did not identify the 50-year-old suspect. "He attempted to hide out in Massachusetts and escape the law in his home country. He posed a substantial threat to the residents of Martha’s Vineyard. ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety in all of our New England communities by arresting and removing egregious noncitizen offenders."
Nantucket Parents Fear For Children Amid Spike In Migrant Crime: 'As A Father, It Truly Scares Me'
The Salvadoran was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol on Nov. 27, 1994, after he crossed the U.S. border near Harlingen, Texas. On June 21, 1995, an immigration judge ordered his deportation back to El Salvador.
Years later, on July 6, 2003, the same man was convicted of disorderly conduct in a Portland, Maine Superior Court and sentenced to a fine and court costs.
Officers with ERO Boston arrested the man in 2009 but released him on an order of supervision via the Alternatives to Detention program, the agency said.
The program, which began in 2004, "uses [monitoring] technology and case management to ensure noncitizen compliance with release conditions, court hearings and final orders of removal," according to the agency.
However, he violated the terms of the program, was apprehended by the agency again on May 18, 2010 and was deported a second time on June 20, 2011.
The man remains in ERO custody. The nature of his crimes in his own country and the timing of his arrest there are unclear.
ICE told Fox News that it did not release the identities of the two men arrested on Sept. 17 because the charges stem from their home countries, and revealing their identities could give their legal representation cause to complain that they can’t receive a fair trial if their identities are exposed.
Fear Grips Idyllic Nantucket Amid Migrant Crime Spike: 'A Lot Of Bad People'
The two arrests are the latest on the wealthy, liberal islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. On Sept. 3, 24-year-old Brazilian illegal immigrant Warley Neto was arrested on Martha's Vineyard. According to ERO Boston, he faces five counts of raping a Massachusetts minor after he entered the United Stated illegally at the Paso Del Norte border region of Texas in 2018.
In Nantucket on Sept. 10, 28-year-old Salvadoran migrants Bryan Daniel Aldana-Arevalo and Elmer Sola – both accused of sex crimes against children – were taken into custody by the agency.
The next day, the agency arrested Brazilian immigrant Gean Do Amaral Belafronte, who was charged with indecent assault and battery on a person 14 years or older, on the island.
Felix Alberto Perez-Gomez from Guatemala, 41, was also arrested on the island that day, and allegedly committed a sex crime against a Nantucket resident.
On Sept. 12, documented MS-13 gang member Angel Gabriel Deras-Mejia of Salvador was arrested on Nantucket, according to the agency.

The news has been spreading like crazy
Yeah, I saw this post.
Now, suddenly, everybody and their mother have a source about them getting married. Everyone says different things. They're going to get married in the fall or late summer. They're going to get married in Boston, on Martha's Vineyard, or on Cape Cod.
I don't really understand why people believe everything they read on the internet. Just because a Twitter account says they are getting married doesn't mean it's true. Just because a no-name, faceless Tumblr anon says the same, it doesn't make it true.
The article from which the Twitter account took this information was posted by Radar Online (a very reliable source 🙄). According to the article, they are still looking for venues for their late-summer wedding. I have never had a wedding, but my sister did, and I know how much organization a wedding needs, even if you have someone to help you out. If they had a late summer or even fall wedding, I think they would already have the venue, since that's basically the first thing you get for it. At least here. It's also really interesting how the article praises Alba, like she is his dream girl; he found his perfect match in her, and he can't wait to make her his wife. It feels like he is the one who wants this more than anything else. Like he is the one who is more into her. I also really love that the article says "He loves the idea of a wedding on the sand". He? Who hates beaches? Yeah, sure. At the end, it also says they tried to reach out to a rep for Evans for a comment. Why only to his? The source was close to him, so why didn't they try to reach Alba's too? Maybe because this whole bullshit article came from them?

Lupo Cittá — S-T (12XU)
Tumblr media
“White Bracelet” shocks itself to life with a screech of feedback, a jolt of electricity that kicks off a barrage of electric strumming, a rumble of chaotic drums, a careening, coursing flood of vocal melody that is both world-weary and extremely energized. It’s the second song on Lupo Cittá’s first album, an emphatic rocker after the narcotic echo and sway of “Onde.” This is the one that sounds most like Chris Brokaw, which is always a good thing. Though to be fair, there are other songs that don’t especially, that perhaps bear the mark of the two other members, Sarah Black and Jen Gori, and they are awfully good, too.
Chris Brokaw, as you might know, has been in roughly a million bands, genre defining ones like Come and Codeine and lesser known outfits like Martha’s Vineyard Ferries and Charnel House, but all of them rough-edged and heart-felt and excellent. Lupo Cittá is the latest Brokaw-affiliated musical ensemble, formed in pandemic’s ebb tide around 2021,with two other indie music lifers. Sarah Black was a fixture in a vibrant Minneapolis scene, playing in Kickball, Period, Plain Jane, the Bleeding Hickeys, the Lie-Ons, the Pointing Geenas and Brandy Thunders and doing performance and visual art. Jenn Gori intersected with Black in several of those bands, playing drums in the Bleeding Hickeys, the Lie-ons, Pointing Geenas and Brandy Thunders.
Once the three members met, they discovered that they had just missed connecting in various episodes of their lives. They were in New York and Seattle during the same periods, and they all moved back to Boston in rough synchronicity though they didn’t really become aware of each other until meeting at a summer 2021 house show. Soon after the two women asked Brokaw to play guitar on a song for them, which grew into more songs and finally Lupo Cittá, an echo-drenched, psychedelic garage trio enamored of 1970s horror and spaghetti western soundtracks.
“Gallup to El Paso,” for instance, has a slouchy western swagger, a molten shudder of bass running through its cavernous, surf-inflected sound. A nocturnal penumbra hangs over this and other songs, clouds of reverb shadowing its slanting cowboy vibe. There’s something lurid about the way the melody breaks through the gloom, a flash of neon in a rainy midnight. “Only in Love” does the same trick with a 1960s girl group melody, wrapping it in so much darkness and uncertainty that it becomes something else altogether. These songs loom up like highways signs as you fly by, flaring out of the impenetrable black then disappearing. Jenn Gori sings in a haunting, dream-shrouded way, slipping in and out of a mess of undertones, even on the all-out rockers, so that the songs have both murderous energy and mystery. “Shawano Pickup,” for instance, blusters and rollicks, an unstoppable rockabilly rave in its bones, but its head, somehow, in the clouds.
This is not exactly a slow-burner —if you like this sort of thing, you’ll like it from the very start. But it does pick up depth and resonance from repeat listens, as this straight on rock record reveals the enigma at its unruly core.
