Emptober Day 31: Sneak

It was a normal day in Stratos, all things considered. Joel was hard at work on his colosseum, there was slight chatter down below about nothing in particular, not that he could really hear much of it. Other than a passing "Hi scar", which, strangely enough, came from Scar himself.

He didn't question it. He went right back to building.

Though, Scar had a very different reaction. Passing himself was already a strange experience. He froze, and looked back at the figured who'd passed him. They looked enough like him. But he was here? He patted himself down, almost in distress, before shaking his head and quickly leaving. This was a mental crisis to deal with some other time.

The other "Scar" strolled right up to where Joel was working, looking up at him and cupping his hands around his mouth. "Afternoon, Joel!"

"Huh?" Joel blinked, then peeked over the edge and raised an eyebrow. "Hi Scar-...." There was something off about "Scar". For one, his eyes were slightly red. Scar had green eyes, not brown, or brownish-red

Second, Scar currently had no mouth. Not in a horrific way or anything, not some ungodly eldritch body horror. Just a lack of a mouth. Like it was meant to be that way.

Joel paused. "Scar" tilted his head. "Is everything alright?"

Third, there was a slight muffled quality to his voice. Like he was speaking through a door, as opposed to just right in front of him. Joel flew down to face "Scar" and smiled fondly. There was something familiar about the man in front of him. Not Scar, but...

"You can stop it now,,, Etho."

"Scar" laughed, the image fading away to reveal who was really standing in front of Joel. "Even if you haven't seen me in months, you still can tell every time?"

"Well, for one, you don't have a mouth." Joel pointed out teasingly. "Void, dude, it's been so long, how've you been?"

"Pretty good,,, Dude, did you really need all that height?"

"I'm a god." Joel grinned, and struck a very arrogant looking pose. It took everything Etho had in him not to start laughing. Joel could tell.

"I'm serious! I'm a god!"

"Void,,, God complex really had an impact on you." He snorted.

"Anyways..." Joel shook his head and rolled his eyes fondly. "I've also got a kid-"

Almost on que, small footsteps came bounding up the way towards them. "Daddy- daddy, look!" Hermes held something up in his hands. "Caught a nametag when I was fishing with papí! Here!"

Joel ruffled up his son's hair and took the nametag. "Thank you, Hermes... You remember me telling you about my friend?"

"Mhmm! Uncle Etho!"

Etho blinked in surprise. Uncle? He'd never met this kid and he'd been an uncle? Wow. "Hi, kid." They grinned behind their mask. Hermes turned around and lit up, hugging Etho's leg and making him nearly stumble back at the force.

Uncle Etho.. honestly, it had a nice ring to it, if you asked him. He knelt down to pick the kid up, placing them on their shoulders, while he and Joel caught up and reminisced.

The boat may have been burned, but thankfully, no bridges were.

Even if he did have to sneak here to be able to see Joel, and to find out where all his friends had just vanished to, he was happy to be here.

Etho, assuming Joel is the one that changed the shulker boxes outside of his glass shop to his own name: i see how it is. I will retaliate in kind, building statues of myself outside of his base and then mock him for having them there. He will understand that this is part of the back and forth teasing we have going on and he will be incentivised to ramp up the mutual exchange of tokens suggesting our mutual obsession

Joel, who did not change the shulker boxes, did not immediately assume Etho built those statues, and that Etho sincerely thought he did all that: 😭guys he thinks im cringe now, who did this😭

I don't think I've seen anyone talk about this before but:

like ??? the differences in titles???? I need to talk about this hold on-

to Joel it's about causing chaos and making everyone pay for getting them down to red and making a last attempt at winning by rage and fire and fighting

to Etho it's pointless, like chasing wind, because the rage and red bloodlust got them nothing other than killed in the end

there are words to be said about how they differently they view their final life and what it says about their canon relationship but I don't really know how to say those words. I just think they are great and so wildly different yet the same

tempted to rewatch their double life again now, I already did it last month I don't have the time-

I may be mainly a scarian girly but I think the link between Boat Boys lovers and Grumbo enjoyers is not talked about enough, grumbo is their smalletho and smalletho is our grumbo
