it takes a long time for shirou to trust someone enough to get close to them — like of course he cares for all beastmen and will protect them but that doesn’t mean he’s close to them by default, he’s actually incredibly guarded and private

so this would only ever work on a basis of acquaintances -> friends -> lovers — and it would be a lengthy process to move from one step to the next

or, in other words: he’s not someone who rushes into things so any sort of relationship progression with him is going to be slow and steady at the best of times

but even once you are in a relationship with him, things aren’t exactly cut and dry

he’s protective over you, of course, and will always keep an eye (or, more aptly, nose) out for you to make sure that you’re safe when you’re away from him

he makes sure that you take care of yourself — whether that’s resting and eating enough, taking any medications you need or keeping you from overworking yourself (depending on what your habits are)

like he’ll start off by gruffly reminding you to take a break or rest or eat, and if that doesn’t work he’ll pick you up and do everything shy of actively forcing you to do some self care

will lend you his coat if you mention being cold, but it’s always in a sort of dismissive way — though he does appreciate the sight of you wearing his clothes, even if he doesn’t show it

not very big on physical affection and can get overwhelmed by it if you’re too forward — prefers to show his love through acts of service instead

if you joke about being in the world’s largest age gap relationship then he’ll just shake his head and sigh — you’re not wrong but he’s not going to encourage you with a proper response

though they’re not as frequent as they used to be, shirou does occasionally suffer from nightmares — reliving the last few days he spent in nirvasyl as well as how he died and the lives he took in the aftermath

this is the only time you’ll see him cry and you’re the only person who gets to see him be vulnerable in this way — he won’t seek you out for comfort but he won’t push you away if you try to give it to him (just don’t bring it up afterwards as he’d rather not think about it)

doesn’t talk about his past often but he will teach you innocent things like dances, songs and how to prepare some of the dishes he grew up with — things that aren’t linked to the fall but instead the cultural core of nirvasyl

doesn’t explicitly tell anyone that he’s in a relationship because he prefers to keep his private and professional lives separate, but michiru, gem, melissa and mayor rose all know you — with michiru in particular always asking about you and teasing shirou about being ‘whipped’ for you

if you’re a beastman like him then he constantly worries about your safety — especially if you travel outside of anima city

he’s all too aware of the dangers faced by your kind and, unlike him, you’re very much so mortal and at risk of losing your life to an anti beastman group — and he can’t imagine losing you so soon

in his more animalistic form he’s much worse at hiding his emotions and will give some not-so-subtle tells that he’s happy to see you — namely wagging his tail (no matter how much he tries to stop it)

he’s a living space heater so sharing a bed is only really viable in the winter because otherwise there is a really good chance that you’ll overheat — especially since he does somewhat cling to you in his sleep and has a strong enough grip that there is little to no chance of you getting out before he wakes up

usually just calls you by your name over any sort of pet name — unless he’s introducing you to someone else at which point you’ll gain a suffix denoting your relationship (e.g. ‘this is (name), my —‘)

so partner if you’re dating (he finds girlfriend and boyfriend to be a bit childish)

The Bronze Tanuki. It was a name Shirou had heard before many times in the few weeks he had been in Anima-City. She was said to be a giant shapeshifting goddess, a protector of all Beastmen, a beacon of hope.

So when the raccoon who lived in the same house as him started to get huffy about the fake Bronze Tanuki that had appeared with the rest of her cult, he started to put two and two together.

Michiru was a powerful Beastman, she had to be to work for the mayor on such important missions. She had a proud heart, a kind soul, and a strong moral compass, but she was also extremely childish, talking about how 'adults' acted as if she wasn't a grown up herself. The way that people talked about her was even more confusing, she seemed to have history with some people that no 18 year old girl should have.

Despite her short stature and immature attitude about things in life, Shirou had seen her in action. She fought off elite warriors with ease, seeming to stretch and change to accomodate any injuries she sustained, making her nearly invulnerable. When the scientist had thrown him off of that building, her tail had grown to cover them both, sheilding the definitely-still-a-human from any damage.

Now that he thought about it, her tail didn't have stripes for a moment when the raccoon girl had transformed to catch him.

Shirou didn't want to make any hasty assumptions, so he did what he always did, and got sleuthing. He was a detective back in Japan, and a damn good one at that. Where Michiru used her senses and power to get resuls, Shirou had always preferred a more private approach.

The first stop on his journey to determine if his kid roomate was secretely the Beastman goddess was her room. He knew it was an invasion of privacy, but when she had so impulsively locked him in that closet, Shirou could have sworn that there were some suspicious things in there that he recognized in hindsight.

So after picking the lock with his claws, Shirou let himself into Michiru's office. Kuro was out with Michiru, luckily. Otherwise, things would have been much harder for him. Another lock picking later, and he was in her closet. 

It didn't take long at all to find what he thought he had seen last time: fur dye, and a lot of it. The dye was the same color as the stripes on her tail, and along side it were all the resources needed to dye one's fur in stripes. Or at least, he assumed it was. Shirou didn't know the first thing about body modification like that. 

He dug around a bit more, but the only other thing of note he could find there was a diary. And he was searching for answers, but Shirou wouldn't stoop that low. Not yet anyways. After he thought he had covered his scent, Shirou was out and walking the streets once more.

The once-human was certan he could find someone who knew something. The mayor would definitely know, but even trying to get close to her without Michiru's help would be pointless. The police and his companion clashed too often for them to know anything. They fought on the same side, but she was a bit too bullheaded for their methodical, red tape filled style. It didn't help that her high morals and refusal to take a life didn't help.

The only person who knew a lot in this city, and wasn't too dangerous to seek out or in prison was...

"Weasel, I have questions."

"MINK! I. Am. A. MINK!" Marie growled out, her mood immediately soured upon hearing the voice of the nosy wolf she had saved a few weeks ago. The doggy wasn't easy to trick, but always seemed to end up encountering her again, and it was getting on her nerves. Maybe if he was gullible enough to con more than once, she'd be happy to spot him, but she wouldn't be seeing his wallet again in a long time-

"I'm willing to pay for answers."

Marie's eyes shone as she turned around, her posture much friendlier and a glowing smile on her face. "Weeeeellll, why didn't you say so, fluffy?" She said serenely. "You should lead with 'I'm willing to pay' all the time! You might actually make some friends that way! Well, friends other than the Mayor's Trash-Panda."

"That's actually who I want to know about," Shirou held up a neatly folded wad of bills, but kept it just out of reach for even Marie's sly arms. For a newbie, he knew how to keep his cool. 

"Are you sure you need my help for that? Michiru's an open book. A little too open if you ask me~ A lot of people love mysterious warriors like that, I could make a killing spreading gossip alone!"

Shirou's eyes narrow. "What kind of gossip?"

"I'm having trouble remembering..." Marie tapped her chin thougtfully, snatching the wad of cash out of mid-air once it was thrown her way. "Oh yes! Now I recall... Apparently, she's been in the city since the day it was built, but she's never gotten any taller, never acted any wiser, never even lost any hair to age! She seems perpetually eighteen. Isn't that strange? She's relatively well known, but unless you know her well, she always stays morphed, makes it almost impossible for anyone to notice that her civilian self even exists, let alone that she's just as unchanging..."

Shirou was silent, turning to leave as quickly as he had appeared.

"Wait!" Marie called, holding in snickers. Michiru would never let her hear the end of it, but the mink was having too much fun now to care about the scoldings from Ms. Goody Two Shoes. "You paid enough for two secrets, so I figure I'll prove that I'm a respectable entrepreneur and give you your change." The mink held up one of the Church of the Bronze Tanuki's necklaces. "From what I hear, the Church's founder used to know her..."

Michiru slipped through her window easily, shifting out of her chameleon form to return to normal, heading to her closet to re-apply her stripes before she would try and go out on the town as a normal girl, maybe drag Shirou along with her. The dude was grumpy, and a little bigoted about Beastmen at times, but he was learning, and she couldn't deny she was way too judgemental about his human traits too. Maybe a nice meal he didn't have to pay for would lift his spirits?

And hers too, but that didn't matter as much.

That idea ended pretty quickly when she entered her closet, and smelled his scent all over her paint.

Oh no.

Michiru flew through the city, literally. She was normally more secretive, but she didn't have time at the moment. Shirou couldn't know, that would ruin everything! Finally someone who treated her normally, and he was about to ruin it all!

The mayor was nice, but Michiru couldn't be friends with her. The woman was busy, and mature. She saw Michiru as a saviour, a hero, a legend. She was kind, and Michiru would always be loyal to the woman who made Anima-City, but it was a Boss-Employee loyalty, not someone who understood her.

There were only two other people who knew about her secret, and judging by the scents, he had already encountered one of them.

Diving down, Michiru formed talons on her feet, grabbing Marie off of the ground and depositing her onto a rooftop, where the dark skinned hustler didn't even bat an eye. "You could be more polite about that, you know?"

"What did you tell him?" Michiru growled out, fur puffed up and ears back as she growled. 

"Oh nothing much, only what he paid me for." Marie fished out some money from her pockets, sticking one tongue out as she already prepared to ditch. "Now if you excuse me, I best be off, but here's a word of advice, old friend~" Michiru groaned at the remark, she had made the mistake of trusting the Mink with private info once, and of course immediately regretted it. 

"What?"

"I might check on that foxy ex of yours, Shirou's on his way already!"

When Michiru finally made it to the other side of the city, panting and exhausted, she found Shirou and Nazuna already talking. The once-Pop Star turned cult leader and Michiru had already spoken today, and if there was one thing Nazuna could be after they argued, it was petty.

So when Michiru dove headfirst through the window and looked up at Shirou, the look of recognition and veiled fear was one she had seen a hundred times now, every time she had told someone her secret.

"So, you know, huh?"

Shirou only nodded, and though Michiru scowled in Nazuna's direction, though the fox was pointedly ignoring her.

"You know my secret?" Michiru curled up into a ball, noticing she hadn't even repainted her tail before jumping out on this little hunt. Tears flew out of her eternally youthful eyes, which she didn't bother to hide. What was the point now that he knew?

She was always aware that he would find out eventually, that he'd leave in a year or two when he spotted some flaws in her story, but she wasn't ready to say goodbye so soon. Nobody stuck around when they found out...

Hello, how are you? By any chance, do you create headcanons for Brand New Animal (BNA)?

Hello, I am doing alright! How are you?

And I thank you for sending this in. Also, so sorry this took a bit to write; I didn’t check my Tumblr for awhile. But I was so happy when I saw it!

So, yes, I do. But I haven’t written any headcanons in a hot minute.

Some headcanons are a bit angsty, but there are sweet ones, and inbetweens.

There are not a lot, so, sorry about that.

Shiro Ogami:

- I get the feeling that he visited the Black Market a couple times, just to see if any Beastman related stuff was possibly being sold.

- He wants to take revenge on humans, but knows that won’t do anything, so he just sticks/stook to saving Breastman.

- But if there is/was humans involved in any cruel act against them, he will use violence.

Nazuna Hiwatashi:

- She felt outcasted when she transformed, and since she also wanted to be an idol she jumped at the first opportunity to continue her goal, and in time gained her confidence back.

- It’s easy to mess with her head and lie/manipulate to her, but Michuri is one of possibly few that doesn’t do that to her.

- I feel like that’s also why Nazuna tends to push her away and then run towards her again throughout the series.

Michiru Kagemori:

- It’s mentioned briefly in the first episode that she had trouble sleeping before she came to Anima City.

- Because of that, I believe she had really bad depressive episodes when she transformed, of course affecting her sleep.

- But Nazuna’s “kidnapping” was the event that raised her depression and anxiety.

- Both inevitably leading to a short period of self-isolation.

- She is terrible at giving nicknames.

- Nazuna probably ends up giving her suggestions for nicknames after Michiru gives up on it after all of them were rejected.

- Michiru’s parents wanted her to be as involved in many things as possible growing up, leading her to be very extroverted and athletic, also giving her the love for basketball.

- She fears not being able to help others, and losing people, especially ones she holds dear.

Marie Itami:

- I’m pretty sure either Shiro, Mayor B. Rose, or both, are preventing her arrest solely because she brings other Breastmen to Anima City…

- She’s an info. broker. You can not convince me otherwise.

- I feel like she used to sell stuff at the Black Market, too. Possibly where she met Shiro, but didn’t get the idea to go to Anima City likely until years later.

BNA (Brand New Animal) AU no one asked for but you're getting it

Man if you think the town was fucked before, HOO BOI- Okay LIs and their animals though:

Robin: Rabbit. No particular breed or species. Prefers to hide or generally avoids using their beast side as much as they can unless either really late for school, which is rare, or is in full Flight Mode. However, at high confidence, you start to see them change form a little more often just for fun. Probably gets teased by classmates and you a lot because "you know what they say about rabbits-" (Nothing. Not until Vrel finally lets me breed hi-)

Kylar: Bat. Again, no particular species in mind atm. Also the type to avoid taking their beast form unless backed into a corner, but if the Whitney vs Kylar path of their Halloween event says anything (and, you know, this is the same person who was willing to stab a bitch just for sitting next to you), you probably don't want them in this form to begin with. Imagining them crawling and clinging to ceilings makes me feel insane. Absolute goblin. Probably doesn't fly much even when it'd be more convenient.

Also, they're probably a fruit bat, but there's definitely rumors about the freak going around and biting people's necks and them always smelling like garlic probably doesn't help.

Whitney: Polar bear. Despite how aggressive they are, they actually find more entertainment making people submit in their human form and surprisingly has the most control of their shapeshifting. If Whitney transforms, you know shit is BAD and you're probably going to die. Their animal form is something of a boogeyman around school because of that.

Sydney: Cat. Like, a really, REALLY fluffy cat. Surprisingly comfortable in their beast form, but it's still rare (just doesn't see a point) and they mostly bring it out for extra warmth.

Avery: Secretary bird. Also considered a pretty or fancy looking hound (think salukis, borzois, greyhounds, afghan hounds etc). Just anything with long legs and looks very graceful or elegant and harmless which makes their true nature worse once out.

Eden: Haven't met them besides one encounter but I kinda imagine some sort of vulture. Maybe a bearded vulture. Like yes they're a hunter but listen vultures are still cool-

Alex: (Horned) sheep or goat. I really like imagining them absolutely headbutting the shit out of Remy's goons. I think out of everyone (second to Eden anyway), they're probably the most comfortable with their beast form and likes to run around on the farm in it when given the chance. Will let those close to them cuddle into their wool if a sheep and just relaxing on the farm.

Now for the town...

Forgive me since it's been about a year or two since I watched BNA but considering how...let's say, unhinged this town is already, I'd imagine that folks are more free in switching between forms but there's still certain circumstances it should be avoided (like transforming during an argument can be seen as a threat or act of aggression even if triggered by accident like a heat of the moment type of thing). I also choose to ignore the ending that basically makes beastmen seem like ticking bombs if they're stressed enough bc I just think it's dumb and with some of the dark shit in this game, this town would've been decimated a long time ago.

You ever watched the anime BNA (Brand New Animal)? Long story short, a race living alongside humans that are basically animals that shift from anthro to pretty much just a human. The have animal instincts and really identify more with it (there is a whole episode about an Albatross who doesn't want "human rights" because then he won't be able to migrate as he naturally would).

One of the characters is a giant immortal wolf who is worshipped as a god and works in social work. He's normally cool or a tad tsundere but I love anything that goes into his animalistic side ❤️ Especially since the main character is accidentally transformed into a beastman via a blood transfusion (she's a tanuki and gets transformation powers) so her going into heat for the first time and he takes her. Human form, beastman form, full sized giant wolf form?? 🥵 Her body can take it, she can adjust. Him becoming possessive over her for the DAYS she's in heat and essentially keeping her locked up.

(actually I have a thing about giant canines and their tiny human or human adjacent partner. Like "is there any possible way for their regular cock to fit let alone their knot. OMFG I think that's as big as my body" big. Like werewolves but way bigger 💖 and admittedly I prefer my monster partner to have the ability to consent it makes them acting feral in bed more fun imo)

I love the character design and the characters over all, even tho their extreme traits can be a bit exhausting (looking at michirus stubbornness) TT. Also nazunas dismissiveness of michiru’s attempts to help her made me a bit sad, ik that she didnt ask her for it but stiiilll (*´◒`*) At one point I was really pissed at the whole anime; when sylvasta fooled michiru and nazuna AND the mayor. I cant rlly blame nazuna and michiru bc theyre naive and young ig (although i mean… come on) but THE MAYOR?! Anyways I was frustrated because i wasnt sure if the story was going to pursue the “big corporations are actually your friend and youre crazy for thinking that theyre bad guys” propaganda because they genuinely all turned on shirou and acted as if he was crazy (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻

Persons Day

It marks the day in 1929 when the historic decision to include women in the legal definition of “persons” was handed down by Canada’s highest court of appeal. This gave some women the right to be appointed to the Senate of Canada and paved the way for women's increased participation in public and political life. Though this decision did not include all women, such as Indigenous women and women of Asian heritage and descent, it did mark critical progress in the advancement of gender equality in Canada.

The History of the Persons Case

In Canada, the British North America Act (BNA Act) of 1867 set out the powers and responsibilities of the provinces and of the federal government. The Act used the word “persons” when referring to more than one person and “he” when referring to one person. Many argued the Act implicitly stated that only a man could be a person, which prevented women from participating fully in politics or affairs of state.

Governments also used the “persons” argument to keep women out of important positions. If the word “person” applied only to men, then the stipulation that only “qualified persons” could be appointed to the Senate of Canada meant that only men could be appointed.

In 1927, five women who have since become known as the Famous Five launched a legal challenge that would mark a turning point for equality rights in Canada. Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby and Henrietta Muir Edwards were journalists, politicians, reformers and activists from Alberta who asked the Supreme Court of Canada to answer the following question: does the word “person” in Section 24 of the BNA Act include female persons? After five weeks of debate, the Supreme Court decided that the word “person” did not include women.

Although shocked by the Court’s decision, the Famous Five did not give up the fight and took their case to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council of Great Britain in London, which was then Canada’s highest court of appeal.

On October 18, 1929, Lord Sankey, Lord Chancellor of Great Britain, announced the decision:

“The exclusion of women from all public offices is a relic of days more barbarous than ours. And to those who would ask why the word ‘person’ should include females, the obvious answer is, why should it not?”

On Persons Day, we honour the bravery and determination of the Famous Five whose landmark case helped pave the way for women to participate equally in all aspects of life in Canada. We also honour all those whose work in the years since then has expanded and strengthened those rights.

Over the years, statues of the Famous Five have been erected in Canada, such as the one depicted on this year’s image that can be found in Winnipeg near the Manitoba Legislative Building. Different statues honouring these women can also be found in Calgary and Ottawa.
