I have been taking my sweet time to finish my fanfic “Star Child”. imagine one of those manwhas, shows, mangas, whatever where the female lead pretends to be a guy for her own protection and the male lead falls for her while she's a guy.

and the male lead is about as well as you'd expect. he's confused and thinking hard, staying up late. is he attracted to a man? to men?

maybe he's an important figure whose image would be messed up if he was gay. he's in love with this guy, possibly, but he doesn't want to know what it means for him and the main conflict is too important for him to be thinking any further.

so when it's all over, the female lead has also fallen in love and reveals herself and confesses.

and the male lead should feel relieved. he should. but he isn't. he's conflicted because he's spent this entire time falling for a man. having all of these bonding moments, confiding in, trusting, and falling in love with a man. the thought has kept him up for days, imagining how to keep his position while maintaining their relationship, or even running away if it came to it. he's thought about other men in his life, if he's ever felt anything for them. he's thought about women and his feelings for them, or possibly a lack thereof.

it might not even be a gender thing. he's fallen in love with them while they've been putting on a front. were any of those moments real? have they fallen in love with someone who doesn't exist? how does he know which person was the real them or which was the persona they made to protect themselves?

and the male lead asks for some space. the female lead is confused because she thinks he felt the same way. and he does, kind of. maybe. he doesn't know.

i imagine that after some time, the male lead stil treasures the female lead. after all, the moments they've had in their relationship don't change because of her gender. but he's still off-put by the fact that what they had might be built on lies. and they start over getting to know the real them.

maybe the male lead realizes he's gay and isn't actually in love with her. or that he's still in love with her but he's also attracted to men. idk, the end.

Bisexuality is one of the book’s major themes. Zane talks at length about the societal pressures that hindered him from proudly owning and living out his bi identity and about the shame and stigma associated with being bi, especially for men. He also discusses many other familiar aspects of bi culture: from polyamory, STIs and hookup apps to the unique pleasures of queer love. He talks about the various denials, dismissals and discoveries along the way, as well as the joy he felt when he finally accepted his identity and became an openly bi man, while reminding us of the long and arduous journey it took to get there.

As you might suspect from a title like BOYSLUT, there are some racy stories in there, too. I won’t spoil them — go buy the book, folks, or petition your library to carry it — but many of them are likely to make even the most seasoned sexpert blush and giggle.

BOYSLUT contains a lot of controversial takes too. Zane’s stance on condom use is likely to raise eyebrows, and his description of how drug use helped facilitate his self-discovery as a queer man might cause some pearl-clutching, too. But we should remember that everyone’s personal story is different. As a grown-ass reader, you can decide for yourself which — if any — parts of Zane’s journey you would like to emulate or learn from.

BOYSLUT is both a juicy, tawdry, revelatory memoir and a manifesto — or, as Zane puts it, a “confessional call-to-arms” for people who want to defy stigma and cast off the shackles of sexual shame. If you’re brave enough to read it, you’ll find it packed with gems. It’s a wild read. I heartily recommend it.
