Morning

Send me a word and I’ll tell you a story it makes me think of...

Mornings?  I try to avoid them. But since you asked... :)

I can’t provide a lot of the background details for privacy reasons, obviously, but when I was working in adolescent behavioral health, I had a patient who was far more of a morning person than I’ll ever be.  She was awake, bright-eyed, and waiting for me when I stepped off the elevator at 7 AM every morning.  She wasn’t privy to our schedules, but she’d been on the unit long enough to basically figure out when to expect each of us to be working and she had identified me as one of her favorite staff members.

“Bitch” might as well have been my name when working on the girls’ unit, but this young lady at least applied it to me affectionately.  I had a rule, when I was the nurse in charge, that I wouldn’t call them out on swearing (we had a unit rule about polite language, but I liked to pick my battles) as long as they weren’t swearing at someone in a derogatory way.  So, “fuck, I stubbed my toe” was okay, but “fuck you” was not.  I let this use of “bitch” slide under these rules.

What I didn’t particularly love, though, was when she started with this thing where she’d shriek, “Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch!” as she ran over to attempt to tackle-hug me.  (We only allowed side-hugs between staff members and patients, if hugging was appropriate at all.)  After a couple of days of this, when it was obvious it had become A Thing, it was time for ground rules.  I told her that we absolutely had to stick to the side-hug and she had to ask first, because boundaries are important for both individuals in an interaction.  Also, I asked if she could please be a little quieter, in order to respect the girls who were attempting to sleep at that time.

The next morning, she actually complied...to the very letter of my request.  She approached me, requested her side-hug (it’s that one-armed casual hug, in case you didn’t know what I meant by this), and I gave her permission.  She then leaned closer to whisper into my ear, “ Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch!”
