Was going to write this as a reply to something but realized it needed its own post.
The tl;dr is that, from the looks of it, Automattic absolutely has every intention of turning Tumblr into a marketing media platform.
I work for a marketing company. I build websites.
Specifically, I build websites on Wordpress.org, which is operated by the Wordpress Foundation.
The Wordpress Foundation is the non-profit counterpart to the for-profit company Automattic.
Automattic, as we know, is the company that currently owns Tumblr.
Now, the thing about Wordpress.org (not to be confused with Wordpress.com) is that it's very, VERY popular amongst small businesses. Not only can you build a fully-customizable website with relative ease, you can also add an online shop using another Automattic product: Woocommerce.
Not too long ago, I noticed a new feature was added to Woocommerce: A button next to each Woocommerce product which allows you to Blaze them to Tumblr right from the comfort of your dashboard:

As someone who understands these tools, I understand the potential implications of these features:
The Blaze feature is basically an up-and-coming ad campaign system that's directly integrated with Woocommerce websites, which I think is the first ad marketing system of its kind. You don't have to log into a social media account to advertise your products, use a second-party integration, or even pay another service to manage your social media ads. It's all baked right into your business's website.
THIS is their planned money-maker, folks, not the rainbow checkmarks or crab armies. And the reason why Automattic would do this kind of thing is simple: Businesses are wealthier than individuals. By implementing a B2B service, Automattic can make more money off of Tumblr than user subscriptions and shoelaces will ever provide.
It's all the same song and dance. Businesses can now shove more ads into your face in a new, convenient fashion. It'll be ads that don't look like ads disguised amongst ads that do look like ads, just like it is with Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and literally every other marketing media service that calls itself a "social" media.
(Tumblr's new video feature? My guess is that it's there to prepare for video-format Blaze campaigns. Influencer-style videos are the only kind of ad format Gen-Z is receptive to, which is why you're suddenly seeing videos on every platform.)
All they really gotta do now is make Tumblr look appealing to the normies so they can draw in a userbase that isn't trying to escape the onslaught of commercialism that plagues other sites.
Tumblr is one of the last true social medias we have; a place where content is made purely for the sake of talking about it. But given the writing on the wall...I doubt it'll stay that way.

Instagram just had the nerve to inform me that my new top post achieved 17% more interaction than my last top post, and like, if they want to make Instagram so that it's only for businesses now they should just announce that and, I don't know, demote all the personal accounts to guests or viewers with no editing permissions or something. Let's just admit that it's this thing that only shows commercials and basically you're a type of NPC if you're not selling anything. It's the same fucking thing with Twitter showing all these analytics at the bottom of tweets, like sir I do not care, this is not what I joined any of these platforms for, and if you've decided that your thing is now exclusively a B2B orgy that private citizens can passively observe if they really feel like it, just fucking say that. It's weird how quickly things have escalated from companies just serving tons of ads for products a regular person could buy, to ALSO treating every user like they might be a small business owner who needs business-to-business ads too. A while ago I had this problem where just because I sent or tracked a package or something, FedEx was relentlessly spamming me with products that would only be relevant to a corporation. Recently I applied for a really low rent, borderline volunteer job that required me to create an Airtable account so they could assign me tasks, and now Airtable sends me endless advertisements for they can increase the productivity of my employees. And like this is not unique, it seems like a lot of companies are playing the numbers game of treating you like BOTH an individual consumer AND a potential corporate account JUST IN CASE you can give them money out of both holes. And then I have like Instagram and Twitter, places where I can actually register that I'm doing business IF that's my deal, addressing me like I'm a marketing professional who really needs their "insights" on how I can boost engagement for my like, picture of a funny piece of garbage I just saw on the sidewalk. It seems so wasteful and pointless to me, but what do I know, I'M NOT A FUCKING BUSINESS OWNER.

Daniel Law thoughts and observations.  Why is his last name so bloody difficult to figure out?
This is a quick and frivolous post as opposed to my normally long form ones.  I’ve got it hard for Daniel at the moment; I’m wade through the vast expanse that is the internet looking for merch for him.  Steven merch is like shooting fish in a barrel with how popular he is.  K.K. merch is also easy and super cheap second hand.  But Daniel merch.  Hoooo boy, it takes some time and effort to find.
The first issue around him is his bloody last name.  Which Japanese isn’t equipped to deal with.  This shows in my merch quest as I’ve scrolled through pages and pages of items.  But first:
The Darkhorse translation calls him Daniel Low.

The Funimation translation settles on Daniel Law.

When you listen to the sub and the dub, both the Japanese VA and English VA both clearly say “Law”.  I’d like to also note that the Japanese VA for Steven, Mitsuru Miyamoto, has really good pronunciation for all of the English terms/names he says specifically which makes me really think “Law” is the intended spelling.   The credits also reflect this.

Both versions also settle on the title of Lieutenant.  While the literal translation is Assistant Inspector (keibuho - 警部補).  I’m not sure why they didn’t go with Detective which sounds like the most American term and Inspector being British.  I guess Detective is a role while, Daniel would still have a police rank associated with him. But I know squat about American policing terms and job titles.  Maybe, I should go back and watch some Law and Order and cringe?
Where is this total weirdness around Daniel’s name coming from?  Especially if we get a season three and Marcus also shows up for the Calamity Auction arc.
Now, we all know that having an equal transfer of Law into Japanese can’t happen since there is no way to make say a “La-wa” etc.  The best you can get is to drop down in the r-line to the “ro” combo.  But then you’ve got that pesky “w” you need to do something with.
If you wanted “Low” this would be the easiest way to get it.  Go with “ro” and add the long vowel dash making it “ro-oh”

But we can see this reading of “ro” with a long “o” can be [sighs] Rho, Lau; Low, Loo, Rau, Raux, Roe or Roh.
Okay, this isn’t what happens in the credits.  The Japanese credits write his name out this way.  “ro” with the “u”.  Now, the first hit is “Law”.  Yay!

But then we get also; Loew, Low, Lowe or even Rowe!  Argh! 
So, how does this tie into merch?  Well, how his name is spelled on KKSS merch of course and how to search for it!
For Back 2 Back full color acrylics that were Jump (Festa Specials I’d guess), we get him and Marcus being referred to as Lowe.  ‘Cause they are twin brothers and Daniel is the older one! Another issue with Japanese language mechanics versus English but that’s for another time.  I’d read Daniel to be several years older since he’s referred to as “older brother” in B2B but since you have to place your sibling in age relative to you - Marcus has to say older brother in the original Japanese.

There is also a small special badge set with Steven and Daniel here, where he is also referred to as “Lowe”.  Did I impulsively buy this?  Yes, yes I did of course!

Yet when we look at other items music/band themed (acoustic guitar) , the American heroes (fighter pilot? why?), ice skating, saloon barkeep/western. he’s got a last name of “Low”.

You might begin to think - okay, it is clear that 1.) there is no official spelling of his name down on paper.  2.) merch designers see ロウ and make an educated guess 3.) his name can’t be “Law”.
Buuutttt let’s go to the actual search function of a Japanese site like Goods Republic.  And what do we find in the character list on the left hand side?  Daniel Law.

Additionally,  you go on Zen Market and access JP Mercari directly, searching with the terms of ダニエル and 血界戦線.  You will get merch that not only pulls up Daniel but all the translated descriptions will always refer to him as Daniel Law.
What have I learned from this?  That until we get season three and Daniel gets a floating info box like below, we will never truly know how his name is spelled.  However, with the sense of humor that Nightow has and his wordplay in English, I really still think the original intent is “Law” because he’s a fucking cop.  Come on, easiest cheese joke ever.

another Sunday, another seven
1. I was supposed to be in Boston this weekend, but I waited too long to buy my ticket and the price doubled, so I had to postpone. So disappointing, but so it goes. What the hell is up with airline tickets right now? Such greed. Sure would be nice to live in a place that has high-speed rail. Best developed country in the world, my ass. 
2. I applied for a director of marketing and communications position in VT last week. It was such a great exercise shaping my resume to suit the position. I’ve never been this excited about the possibility of an interview before. I’m feeling so burnt out on B2B/B2C copywriting and miss using my talents and skills to drive a mission-focused organization. When I saw the listing, just an hour after they posted it, my entire being shouted YES and I got to work on the resume immediately. Hell, I didn’t even realize I was open to a full-time job, but I sure am. Continuing to work strictly from home in the long term is not going to be sustainable for my mental health. Lort, it feels so good to admit that. 
3. My latest therapy journey is more productive than any I’ve had before and I think it’s because I entered it in a space of calm readiness, looking for help moving forward. We touch on the past because that’s where the patterns originate, but I’m not sobbing my way through each session and have had one major breakthrough nearly every week. It’s helped me come unstuck and open myself to possibilities, and it sure feels as if the universe recognizes that I’m ready for change. A plan B emerged yesterday that feels true and viable if the VT org doesn’t feel I’m the right fit. 
4. I noticed that with the plan B idea forming, my mind immediately tried to tell me to focus solely on that because VT is never going to happen. I spent some time talking with that voice in my head, reminding her that we don’t need to catastrophize and we can continue prepping for the interview so we put our best self forward. It’s such a relief to have words to sooth that part of me that wants to protect me from being hurt by avoiding putting myself out there. I thank her for her service all these years and let her know that I’ve got her, go ahead and sit in the back of the bus and relax and enjoy the ride. 
5. During all of this, I’ve had 4 Rolfing sessions in 3 weeks and my body is changing radically. I was finally ready to take the connective tissue healing to the next level and I noticed while sitting meditation this morning that I can breathe more deeply. It feels like there’s room inside my body in a way that I don’t think I’ve ever felt before. The education I receive in these sessions is finally starting to sink in and exhibit in my daily movement. I’m so aware of how my scoliosis has been this driving force in my body for most of my life and I only last year began to address it. I am aware of my body in space, the spacious dimensionality of it, the way joy and pain exist together because I am in a body. I’m so interested to see the bones of my sternum relaxing so there isn’t such a pronounced bump at the top of my chest anymore. And now I feel it acutely when surfaces I’m interacting with are uneven - chairs, tables, floors. My body was so twisted before that I didn’t even feel it. 
6. I’m writing a book about how having scoliosis that was never treated - in fact was diagnosed and summarily forgotten by everyone in my family - has shaped my life. And how beginning the healing and acceptance process 43 years later is changing the shape of both my body and my life. My spine will always be shaped like a question mark, but now I am rising to the questions it poses and exploring the possible answers.
