“Always on My Mind” Songwriter Mark James Dies at 83
- “Suspicious Minds” and “Hooked on a Feeling” among James’ other compositions
Mark James, the songwriter behind “Always on My Mind,” “Suspicious Mind,” “Hooked on a Feeling” and other hits, has died, according to multiple media reports that cite the Houston Chronicle.
James was 83 when he died June 8 in Nashville; no cause was given.
“Our sincere condolences to the family of songwriter Mark James,” said the Pet Shop Boys, who, like Willie Nelson before them, scored a hit with “Always on My Mind.”
Elvis Presley recorded the definitive version of James’ “Suspicious Minds,” while “Hooked on a Feeling” became a hit for both B.J. Thomas and Blue Swede.
“RIP to Mark James … one of my all-time favorite composers, and Elvis thought so, too,” Leo Sayer said in a statement.
Fine Young Cannibals, Jay-Z, Dwight Yoakam, Bill Withers and others also recorded James’ songs.

♫ Always On My Mind ♫
A few nights ago I played You Were On My Mind by We Five and others, and in a comment to that post, my dear friend Michael Seidel said, “But … but but what about Willie?” and I knew immediately what he referred to! I’ve long loved this song, and find I haven’t played it in several years, so … this one’s for you, Michael! While I am definitely not a country music fan, there are a few artists who…

The Neon Rainbow (Reposted from 1/4/2017)
This morning I caught myself singing the first verse to an old Box Tops’ song, “Neon Rainbow”, for absolutely no reason at all. “City lights, pretty lights, they can warm the coldest nights”. I hadn’t heard the song recently, and it isn’t on the list of my favorite songs, but there it was dancing in my head, like a leftover sugarplum. That is the power of a well-crafted pop song: it sticks in some corner of your brain and leaps out at you when you least expect it. Usually, it’s the chorus that you remember (that’s why they call it “the hook”) and since this song had a verse as memorable as some choruses I had to do some investigating. I wanted to know where this delight came from. Who was the songwriter? I expected it to be either Alex Chilton, the 16 year old boy-genius who was lead singer for the Box Tops and later became a mythological rocker with the band Big Star, or Dan Penn, the brilliant singer and songwriter who produced the Box Tops’ album. I was surprised to see that the writer was someone I had never heard of, a guy named Wayne Carson Thompson. I took a closer look at his body of work and found myself asking: How had I missed this guy?
Wayne Carson (he dropped the “Thompson”, his real surname, at some point during his long career) was a GREAT songwriter. He was not just a “successful” writer or an “accomplished” writer; he was a master of his craft. Wayne Carson wrote great pop and country songs that were recorded by a lot of people, over a long period of time. For the Box Tops, he wrote “The Letter” and my personal favorite, “Soul Deep”, in addition to “Neon Rainbow” and other less well known songs on their early albums. His pop songs were recorded by acts as varied as Petula Clark and Tina Turner, and his Country songs were hits, some BIG HITS, for major artists: Conway Twitty, Ray Price, Mel Tillis, Genn Campbell, B.J. Thomas and Johnny Paycheck. Songs that I hadn’t heard in years were instantly brought back to mind merely by reading their provocative and memorable titles: “I See the Want To In Your Eyes” and “Slide Off Your Satin Sheets”. Well-written, extremely listenable pop music. Sweet.
My big surprise was that he had written songs that had been hits for one of my favorite country/slash/outlaw artists, Gary Stewart. I had covered “Drinkin’ Thing” and “She’s Actin’ Single (I’m Drinkin’ Doubles)” with my country bands in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and they are still among my faves. If he had never written another song, these would have established a legacy that any aspiring writer would be proud to claim. But there is one song that truly guaranteed Wayne Carson’s place in anyone’s songwriting Hall of Fame: “You Were Always On My Mind”. First recorded by Elvis, and then performed by just about everybody, this song won the 1983 Grammy for Song of the Year and Best Country Song. Since then it has become Willie Nelson’s signature song and one of America’s most unavoidable earworms. And he wrote it in ten minutes at his kitchen table. That, my friends, is some good songwriting.
Wayne Carson didn’t think the Box Tops’ first record was that good. He didn’t really care for the singer’s voice and he thought that the single, “The Letter”, was too short. He also wondered what the producer was thinking, sticking that jet noise on at the end. Pretty typical response for a songwriter. He wouldn’t recognize a hit song even if he wrote it. Wayne Carson passed away on July 20, 2015 at the age of 72 of natural causes, but his songs still pop into people’s minds when they don’t expect it. And I will guarantee you that tonight, someone, somewhere will be playing a Wayne Carson song and the audience will sing along, blissfully unaware of the name, or story, of the guy who blended the beautiful melody with the clever words. They might remember who recorded it, but that’s about as far as the “whose song was that” game goes. That’s just the way it is for songwriters, most of the time. And that’s OK. But today I want to say thank you, Mr. Wayne Carson, songwriter, for leaving us such a fine bunch of tunes.
Yours, JIm

Freakonomics Podcast: What’s Wrong With One-Hit Wonders?
Do you know what is one of the most high-profile one-hit wonders in recent music history? It's Gotye's Somebody That I used To Know. This 2012 song topped the charts in over 27 countries including Australia, New Zealand, the US and the UK. It has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Yet Gotye never approached that success again in the U.S., but is still popular in Australia. So is he truly a one-hit wonder?
In this week's episode of Freakonomics Radio, the show investigates the phenomenon of "one-hit wonders." Sometimes premature death can explain a one-hit wonder such as The Confederacy Of Dunces by John Kennedy O'Toole. Published in 1980, this masterpiece of modernist literature was actually published 11 years after the author committed suicide at the age of 31.
Other times, the explanation for the one-hit wonder phenomenon is more complex. In music, The song 96 Tears is a surprisingly catchy hit about too much crying. It brought the garage rock band Question Mark and the Mysterians some fleeting success in the mid-1960s, but it wasn't enough to keep them in the limelight into the next decade.
How about a one-hit wonder that drifts in and out of the zeitgeist in different decades. Long before this song had new life thanks to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and even before it gained popularity in the 90s thanks to Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, 70s kids were walking around singing "ooga-chaka ooga-ooga" (whatever that means). Still, Hooked on a Feeling, which itself was a cover of B.J. Thomas' 1968 original, is the only hit Swedish rock band Blue Swede ever had at any time.
In the Freakonomics episode, host Stephen Dubner asks, "We tend to look down on artists who can’t match their breakthrough success – should we be celebrating them instead?
Host Stephen Dubner looks at research about the one-hit wonder phenomenon, speaking with professors at Stanford and Washington University who have studied the topic. A new 2023 study shows that writing a particularly successful first cookbook makes authors less likely to produce a second book within five years, and Dubner brings those findings to one such cookbook author: Samin Nosrat, author of the massively successful Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat who, six years later, has yet to follow it up.
And, of course, Dubner also speaks to a musical one-hit wonder: Sean Nelson, singer of Harvey Danger. Sean says, of his band's one and only hit ("Flagpole Sitta"):
"Imagine if you told a joke at a party when you were 20, and then every party you ever went to for the rest of your life, the only thing anyone wanted to hear you say, and the only reason you were invited, is because they want you to tell that joke again. It’s not quite as funny, it’s not quite as thrilling. But there are way worse things, and you feel like a total fool for complaining. It’s just a particular little sting in the tail."

CLAUDE AKINS
May 25, 1926
Claude Aubrey Akins was best known as Sheriff Lobo on the 1979–81 television series “B. J. and the Bear" and later “The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo”, a spin-off series. Akins was born in Nelson, Georgia, and grew up in Bedford, Indiana. Some sources say he was born in 1918, making his age at death 75; however, Akins' son said his father was 67 at the time of his death.
Akins first appeared (uncredited) in From Here To Eternity (1953). His first big break was in The Caine Mutiny (1954, above), which featured “Lucy” guest-star Van Johnson.
“I Love Lucy” fans remember Akins as the ‘Giant Native’ in “Desert Island” (ILL S6;E8) on November 26, 1956. Although playing himself, Akins was nearly unrecognizable in his native make-up and costume. His low, growling voice gave him away as soon as he spoke.
In the episode’s plot, Akins is on the island to film a scene for a (fictional) film called The Florida Story. Akins is filming a scene about Ponce de Leon’s landing in Florida, while Ricky is scheduled to appear in the modern-day section.
In his autobiography, Keith Thibodeaux (Little Ricky) remembers that Akins had really bad breath!
The following year (1957), Akins made two appearances on the Desilu helicopter series “Whirlybirds”.
From 1960 to 1963, Akins made three appearances on the hit Desilu gangster series “The Untouchables.”
On February 13, 1967, Akins was featured on “The Lucy Show” as Lieutenant Finch in “Lucy Meets the Law” (TLS S5;E19). In the episode, Lucy Carmichael is arrested for being a jewel thief!
It turns out to be a woman who looks very much like Lucy!
Akins continued to do episodic television and films, including playing war-mongering gorilla Aldo in Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973).
In 1978, he landed the role of Sheriff Elroy P. Lobo on “B.J. and the Bear” (5 episodes) which led to “The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo” (34 episodes).
Claude Akins married Therese Fairchild in 1952 and had three children. He died on January 27, 1994 of stomach cancer.
“I was very fortunate that I get paid for what I love to do. I know a lot of good actors who simply can't find work. Every time I get a job, I say to myself, 'You've beaten the odds.'”
