Mika: Nah, nah, it's 'cause he thinks TV's vulgar that he's tryna change it into somethin' more artistic and refined-like.
Oshi-san's like that with everything. Idols are probably just somethin' he wants to reform, too.
Nazuna: Making the vulgar refined, turning common entertainment into art... That's a thorny path he's chosen to walk. But, well, looking at how Itsuki is now, I feel like he'll actually be able to do it.
Mika: Right? I believe in him.
Nazuna: Yup. In the past he used to let his brilliance run completely unchecked, so there were a lot of people who couldn't keep up with him... But now Itsuki feels a little softer, I guess.
If a genius is able to translate their creations into something that the common masses can understand, then they'll be absolutely unbeatable. Even if normal people try to overturn them, they'll never lose.
Mika: Heh. I've been tellin' ya that from the start, haven't I? Oshi-san's the strongest, there ain't no one even close t'bein' his rival. ♪
(...Wait a sec, why am I talkin' with Nazuna-nii all chummy like this? I can't—he's a traitor!)
(But even though I think that, he really is easy to talk to. I feel all warm and fuzzy just chattin' with him.)
(No, this is bad he's a traitor, an enemy.)

Nazuna: What's up? You're looking at me really intensely... Is there something on my face?
Mika: N-Nope~? As always, yer face's so pretty it ticks me off?
Nazuna: ...Thanks?
Tomoya: Umm, Kagehira-senpai?
Mika: Ngah? Whaddya want, uhm, Tomoya-kun...?
Tomoya: Sorry, I know this is impolite, but—could you give me your autograph?
Mika: Huh? Sure, I don't mind... Ah, wait, I gotta get permission from Oshi-san first.
I reckon he'd say somethin' like, "Think about what it means for an artist to give out their signature!"
But yer not just some random stranger, Tomoya-kun, and I know ya won't misuse it or nothin'. Why do ya want my autograph, though?
Tomoya: Ah, my little sister's friend wanted it. I did tell her to quit asking me for this kind of thing 'cause it's a bother and she'll never stop asking for more otherwise, but, yeah...
Mika: Ngah, yer lil' sis' friend is...a fan of Valkyrie?
Nazuna: Huh. If her friend is around the same age as her, that means they're still a kid. They've got surprisingly refined taste~
Tomoya: Ah, didn't you hear? Right now, Valkyrie's really popular with girls from kindergarten to middle school.
Nazuna: Eh, what? Itsuki is? I don't know why, but this smells kinda fishy...
Mika: He ain't doin' nothin' criminal. Sometimes ya really are just naturally rude, Nazuna-nii...
Anyway, ya see... Recently, we've been participatin' in a collaboration project between a big anime company and a big toy company.
An anime's bein' made for the project, and we've been composin' music for it, then singin' and recordin' songs ourselves.
Ah, and we've been designin' some costumes, accessories 'n toys for it too.
Seems folks really liked our work, so now Valkyrie's style is real popular among lil' kids.
'S hard to believe myself, but...
Look, you can see a couple o' kids wearin' Valkyrie-lookin' clothing just out the bus window.
Nazuna: Eh, where? Ahh, now that you mention it, that does look like Itsuki's taste.
Mika: Hehe, seems like lil' kids enjoy wearin' those kinda over-the-top clothes more than adults do.
They're a lil' dark, but they seem to go down well with kids who still believe in ghosts 'n monsters 'n stuff.
It's a pretty mature-lookin' style, too, so it's perfect for kids who wanna grow up quick. And on top o' that, it's real stylish, ain't it?
Nazuna: Yeah... When you put it like that, I feel like you guys always had the potential to be popular.
Mika: Heh. This is all thanks to Anzu-chan. She put together a presentation and sang praises 'bout us to a buncha different companies.
Oshi-san was also... loads more eager than I thought he'd be. He started promotin' stuff real passionately.
Nazuna: That guy loves little kids, after all.
Mika: Yer really askin' for a misunderstanding, sayin' it like that. But, well, I think this'll just be a passin' fad~ The project's real big and all, but it'll only be goin' on for a lil' while.
We've grown pretty darn popular, so it's likely they'll ask for us again next time, but...
Oshi-san's gonna be goin' overseas after graduation, so we ain't got no choice but to step away from the project.
Seems like he'll be busier over there, so he said his hands're tied.
Nazuna: Hmm, so he's going abroad after graduation... Well, he's been saying that he wants to go see the world since a while back. He's more of a shut-in type, though. I guess he's really pushing himself.
...Kagehira, are you alright with that?
Mika: I gotta be. It's what Oshi-san chose for himself, after all.
Valkyrie's gonna break up soon, so it's a huge accomplishment that at least in the end we managed t'become so popular we're almost a right social phenomenon.
It'll be the crowning glory that'll adorn us. All of Oshi-san's efforts are finally gonna pay off.
Nazuna: ...What're you gonna do after this? Haven't you thought about scouting new members and continuing Valkyrie?
Isn't it fine for you to take over the project? Itsuki's probably thinking something along the same lines, and it'll be a waste if you disband now that you've finally gotten so popular.
Mika: Nazuna-nii... Of all people, yer the one talkin' to me 'bout takin' things over?
'Course, I'm wonderin' what I should do~ I ain't got a clue to that end yet, but...Valkyrie belongs to Oshi-san. I'm just one lil' part of it.
If we disband now, Valkyrie can fade away all graceful-like. But if I took over, my precious Valkyrie'll just end up all sad 'n tarnished.
I couldn't stand somethin' like that.
But ya probably wouldn't understand, Nazuna-nii.
Ya turned yer back on us, forgettin' all we went through together, an' left us without sparin' us a single glance. No, there ain't no way you could understand.
Rather than decayin' all nastily, giving off a rotten stench as we live on... We'd rather die with beauty.
Nazuna: ......

My Dive into the Idol Anime World
Who would have thought I’d get into idol anime?!?!
Here’s the thing.. I always saw “Idolish7″ everywhere and wondered what it was about. I first started watching Ensemble Stars and I admit, not that into it, but then... I finally finally finally got into an anime drought where I felt burnt out and couldn’t find anything enjoyable. And by enjoyable, I mean I want to be so swept up in a show I can’t stop watching and can’t focus on anything until I binge it all. That’s my summer mood.
So I started Starmyu! aka High School Star Musical. When I first start any anime show, I look up its tag on Tumblr to see if there is a large fan base, if there are any ships to look forward to, and to overall sense if people seem to enjoy the show. I noticed Starmyu had a lot of ships and fans, and so I felt more inclined to watch it.
One word: WoW.
I definitely got swept up. I knew I was obsessed when I wasn’t even thinking about Fruits Basket anymore or making any comparisons in my mind.
I binged all three seasons in four days, and am already sad it’s over. I needed to fill my idol anime heart as soon as possible, and started Dream Festival! I am so excited to discover the entire music/idol category on Crunchyroll, and already have an extensive list of idol anime to get through. Who knew there would be so many!! There’s Tsukiuta, B project, Tsukipro, Ichu, Idolish7, etc etc etc.
I can’t really explain what is so intriguing about the genre. It’s not even the music, although Starmyu’s season 1 Opening and Ending song is on my playlist as we speak. It’s not even the visuals, although it is stunning. Everyone os incredibly attractive, of course, and it doesn’t help they are high-key BL vibes among the friends, which I am loving very much.
I think what really gets me with idol anime is the overall atmosphere of perseverance and integrity. It is chock full of life lessons. It is so overwhelmingly full of hope. Despite all they go through as a group or individually, there is this constant push to look for the rainbow after a rainy day. Even through the darkness, they wait for the light. They never lose sight of their goals even when everyone, and I mean literally everyone, tells them to give it up and move on. They still strive to make things work with each other even when someone irrevocably pushes them away and makes it difficult to get through the labyrinth of emotions.
As I soon enter grad school, a probably extremely challenging portion of my life, I am driven to act the way these idol anime cuties act: they never give up, are so motivated and passionate, and they believe in humans so strongly.
I can’t say I always believe in others all the time. I’ve been let down before, as much as the next person, and sometimes I lose faith in humanity and feel like everyone just is the same. It’s difficult to look at someone new and think they won’t hurt me, too. It’s hard not to walk through life looking on the ground for any pitfalls of disappointment. It’s nearly impossible to leap before looking and I can no longer just go through life without the knowledge that heartbreak is crippling and possible at every corner.
But I also can’t deny the allure of seeing the best in others, regardless of what I have been through. It’s tempting for me to just walk into something headfirst and expect different results. I want to clear my mind of hesitation and just trust new people. I feel encouraged to go through life with undying and contagious optimism and hope for the best. It sounds scary, really, to be so hopelessly excited everyday, but I want to try.
And if I fail, I think I’ll feel better than the thought I always stayed in a protective cocoon and never even attempted something new.
The future is uncertain, and it frightens me, but I don’t know why: for some reason, idol animes lead me to believe that everything is going to be beautiful in the end. When they make their final bow altogether with their friends on stage, I find comfort in the fact that they, too, had numerous obstacles and hard days to get through. However, they always triumph in the end due to their resolve and unbreakable spirit.
How about we take a page out of the idol anime playbook and put on the performance of our lives as well?

Hello everyone well I have yet another request that came from my wattpad account and this time the request is all about our lovely mini-Bri Gwilym Lee. Now as a warning THERE IS HEAVY MENTIONS OF CHEATING (not on Gwil’s part but it’s for the back story) and due to that there is angst but I PROMISE FLUFF IS THROUGHOUT MOST OF THIS STORY esp. once the ending comes around. I was walking around the main stage set where they would be filming the most iconic scene ever, the Live Aid sequence. I was just in awe at how the stage designers were following everything by the book, from the brick wall patterns, to the posters that hung on them at the time, even some of the paint chipping away.
For those that are curious, the name’s (y/n) (l/n). I’ve been on the road with Queen ever since they started working alongside my best friend, Adam Lambert. Yep, Adam and I go way back since middle school as a matter of fact. We were both the awkward kids who no one really paid attention too and loved classic rock, esp. Queen. When Adam told me he was planning to audition for American Idol, I just couldn’t let him go on alone.
I was his big supporter and went to every live performance cheering him from the sidelines, even helping his team organize and making sure he had everything he needed to his performances. And even though he was a runner up, he was still a winner in my book. Then when he came out to me as well as the world about his sexuality, that didn’t change my perspective of him. I stuck by him because we were the Odd-kids through thick and thin.
Then by 2014 he met up once again with Queen a few years after performing with them back during his season of American Idol and that’s when they offered Adam to be the new leading man for their concerts and thus Queen+Adam Lambert was born.
And then just two years later, Queen officially began to project that was the film ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ Adam had invited me along since he had a small little cameo to play and he said that I could potentially have a small role in the film too, but I turned to role down. I just—never really fit well with a camera’s attention on me.
But here I am as support for Adam as well as Brian and Roger. Those two men have really become role models and sorta like second dad’s to me in a way. When life got to stressful on the road; Brian always took me aside and the two of us would look at the SaveMe animal videos he had on his website, while Roger was the one with the good therapeutic music to listen to, he even got me into some bands that I never really had the chance to listen too. Even his former solo band’s ‘The Cross’ music.
“Oh my god. This is beautiful.” It was then I bumped into someone’s back.
“Oh sorry my fault.” We both said at the same time but when I looked up to see just who it was that I had bumped into, I felt like I needed to do a double take because I swear to god I thought I was looking at Brian May at the time of Live Aid.
“Wow you’re gorgeous.” I thought I had said in my head but apparently my lips just had to voice it out loud to him. Embarrassingly I hid my face but I heard the Brian look-alike softly chuckle and he said.
“It’s fine love, I’m flattered, really. Guess I really look the part don’t I?”
“Yeah.” I nervously giggled.
“I’m Gwilym. And as you can probably tell by the wig, I’m playing Brian May in the film.”
“(Y/n). I’m uhh—Adam’s best friend.” God could this be any more humiliating.
“Oh so you’re the one Brian and Roger told us about. The clever roadie.”
“Well I wouldn’t call myself clever. They just flatter me because I work for them.”
“No, no, no. Brian especially talks about how you’ve been able to work on fixing all the AMPS that break down during rehearsal, or knowing when exactly his red special needs a tuning or new string set.” I blushed and that’s when he said, “Oh I’ve gone and rambled making you uncomfortable. I’m so sorry (y/n).”
“It’s fine Gwilym. So is this your first acting gig? Or have you been doing this for a while?”
“I guess you could call me a child actor. My first gig was in a show called Animal Ark, I think I was 13 years old when I auditioned for it. Then after getting my education I dived fully into the acting industry with a few television shows and a few movies. My recent big project was when I was in Midsomer murders, have you heard that show?”
“I think so. My dad was always into British tv more than American tv. Even though he was born in Minnesota.”
“I was only on for only 3 series before I went into some other projects.”
“Well I’d love to see the show sometime. And you said it was called midtown murders?”
“Midsomer, actually.”
“Oh right sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
And that’s kinda what we ended up doing. We just sat there and talked right up until it was time to start filming. I wished him good luck and as the actors got into place, I stood beside Roger, Brian’s daughter Emily and Peter “Phoebe” Freestone. Shortly after the boys entered the stage much like Queen did 31 years Brian came up and sat down beside me and that’s when Rami, who was playing Freddie, set down at the piano and the guys all began to play the full Live Aid set.
As I looked at each of them I knew each of these guys had done their homework. And seeing them in full costume and shtick, it was like I was actually there at the concert seeing them. ��Of course my eyes were especially focused on Gwil who played Brian’s red special with such ease and finesse, it was like I was really watching Brian during the time of Live Aid.
Of course being a Queen fan, I couldn’t help but interact with each song they did, the double handclap for Radio Gaga and We will rock you, following along to the Aye-oh’s, headbanging to Hammer to fall, dancing to Crazy little thing called love, and swaying to We are the champions.
After doing several rehearsals, Dexter finally decided to film the guys for real this time. And even though it was cold and the guys were probably exhausted, they still managed to perform the whole show once more with even more energy and enthusiasm when the cameras were really recording. By the end of it all, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.
When I finally came backstage after the guys and some of the crew congratulated them on a job well done, I don’t know why it happened but I couldn’t help but fling myself towards Gwilym and embrace him.
“Seems our Brian look-alike has found his little groupie.” Teased Rami using his Freddie voice. At that point I backed away and released him.
“Sorry. I just—got a little excited. Seeing you four up there it was like—finally seeing all four members of Queen back together for the first time in a long time.”
“We’re glad you loved it (y/n).” Gwilym said with a soft smile that made butterflies tickle my stomach.
“So you said you love Queen? What’s your favorite song of theirs?” asked the John Deacon look alike, damn much like Gwil, he definitely looked like Deacy, I can see why the casting directors chose him, it was like he was his son or something.
“Oh god well don’t tell them this but it’s definitely Somebody to love.”
“I like her already. We match!” he raised his hand up for a high five which I complied to give him as he introduced himself as Joe Mazzello.
Pretty soon I knew the other two actor’s names, Ben Hardy who was playing Roger, and Rami Malek who was playing the legend himself Freddie Mercury.
*Brian’s POV*
As I watched our genius little roadie chat up with the actors playing us, my mind kept going back to that hug she gave my look-alike.
“I know you saw that right, I mean I maybe blind as a fucking bat but I know my eyes didn’t deceive me on what I just saw.” Roger said as he came up to me.
“Your eyes do not lie Rog. I saw what you saw.”
“You know our girl doesn’t just hug any random guy.”
“Yep. And that shy little gleam in her eyes, dare I say I think our mini-Deacy is in love with my look alike.”
“Not to say I’m happy for her, but I feel like she could’ve chose better.” Roger teased.
“Oh shut it you old tart, you’re just jealous she didn’t pick your actor.”
“Nothing against yours, cause bloody hell it’s like I’m looking at you 30 years ago over there.” I softly chuckle. Yeah they definitely casted the perfect actor to play me, and seeing Gwilym with the wig on its…..mind boggling (although I had to slightly adjust the wig a bit) but other than that he was perfect. “So, shall we go and confront her about it?”
“Now hold on Rog, you know how she gets when she’s being fully confronted. She’ll completely shut down. Let’s—wait it out. See what happens, and then we’ll see if this is something to discuss with her. But it’ll be on my terms.”
“You just wanna suck the joy out of everything.” I shook my head at Roger’s statement before turning back towards (y/n) and Gwilym. Seeing the two of them talking and laughing with each other warmed my heart. Because ever since we’ve met her, (y/n) has been the best roadie we’ve ever had. She’s always on top of every sound and light equipment we’ve got, she knows how Adam likes his speakers to sound and she’s even clever enough to see when I need a new string set on my guitars or when Roger’s kit needs a tuning because of a loose screw that might’ve happened while unloading.
But for whatever reason she sometimes puts herself down, claiming that she’s not all what we’ve both told her she is. That she’d rather just remain invisible, and I can understand some of her pain because I’ve been there myself with my own self-doubt and insecurities. So I hope that if her and Gwilym do somehow manage to form a relationship, he could probably help her see that she is more than she seems.
*My POV*
After a couple weeks of being on set, Gwil and I were definitely spending a lot of time together and every time we got the chance to hang out, we’d talk about our lives or love of Queen.
“So you and Adam Lambert really knew each other that long?” he asked me.
“Yep. It just happened one day during lunch, I was the new kid in town and I feared no one wanted to hang out with me so I ended up eating in the courtyard by myself when Adam, all donned up with his green dyed stripped bangs introduced himself and we’ve been friends ever since.”
“So he was even extravagant even back then.”
“Yep. Then when we found out we both had a love for Queen, he refused to let me out of his life afterwards, cause I was the only friend he had that liked or even knew who Queen were.”
“Wait are you serious?”
“Dead serious. It’s hard to find people to talk about classic rock with when all they cared about was the rap music or Britney Spears. Or spice girls.”
“Wow.”
“So how did you come to know Queen’s music?”
“You’ll have to thank my old brother. He had basically almost every single Queen record there was, one day I heard him play Bohemian Rhapsody and I was curious. And I guess you could say the rest is history.”
“Well then your brother gets an A+ from me for good music taste.”
“So how is it touring with Queen and Adam?”
“Well I’ve toured with Adam for so long it just feels like a normal hang out day for us. Once he got the offer to tour with Queen themselves it was like not only meeting my role models but they became family to us. Brian and I have a common love for animals, so much so that I’ve become a daily donor to his SaveMe organization.”
“Hey Gwilym. They’re ready to start filming.” One of the producers came up.
“Well that’s my cue, see you after?”
“You bet.” We stood up and I went ahead and sat down at one of the chairs and watched as the guys did the performance for a Japan concert. I’ll admit even with the 70’s silk/satin angel shirt that he was wearing, he still looked pretty handsome and he sure was a brilliant guitarist if I do say so myself.
“I see what you’re doing.” Adam’s sing-song voice whispered in my ear. I came out of my daze and whispered to him.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Oh don’t play dumb with me dearie. I have eyes I’m not blind.” I shook my head and went back to paying attention to the guys now doing Brian’s song ’39. I clapped along with the song and softly sung the words (cause out of every song Bri had written, this was definitely my #1 fav.) When Dexter called cut, I suddenly felt myself being dragged away and soon found myself in a closet of sorts.
“Adam what the fuck is the matter with you?”
“Well would you rather talk about this out there where everyone can hear, potentially your secret lover too?” I immediately covered his mouth with my hand and I hissed at him as I shushed him.
“Shh! Shh! Speak louder why don’t you I don’t think they heard all the way from Glasgow!” I then retracted my hand in disgust as I felt him actually lick my palm. “Why must you do that?”
“Cause I know it annoys you.” He shrugged.
“You can be such an asshole sometimes Lambert.”
“Yeah but you always stick around me dearie.” He said smugly as he leaned up against the wall of the closet crossing his arms. “Now as I was saying back there, you’re really starting to get attached to Brian’s mini-him aren’t you?”
“No!” I snapped abruptly. He quirked his brow at me before I cleared my throat and said. “No, we’re just friends is all Adam. In fact if you keep going down this path, I might just replace you with him.”
“That hurts (n/n), that really hurts.” He mocked in pain as he placed his hand over his heart and gave me the puppy dog pout. “But girl c’mon for realzies, what’s up with you?”
“Nothing is up, okay can you just drop it? Now if you’ll excuse me Gwilym and I are due for a coffee break.” I walked out of the closet and stormed out trying to get my mind off of what Adam was hinting. As I was walking, I soon came up to Gwilym and when he saw me he smiled and I tried to calm my anger down as I approached him calmly.
“You okay (y/n)?”
“Yeah, yeah why would you say that?”
“Just—for a moment it looked like you were pissed at something.”
“Oh nothing you need to worry about, so you free for some coffee and catering? I know you’ve got a long day ahead of you, might not be a bad idea to have a good lunch.”
“Great because I had to skip breakfast when my alarm failed to wake me up this morning.”
“Well then we better hurry. We need food stat, can’t have one of the four Queen members perform on an empty belly.” We then raced over towards the catering and got us some food and coffee.
When we got it and was now walking through the studio where they were now setting up the Madison Square Garden set just opposite of where the Japan stage was earlier this morning.
“Wait so that actually happened?” asked Gwilym.
“He tries to deny it and blames it on the poor lighting the camera had but don’t be fooled. His son Rufus told me the whole story of how it happened.”
“I can’t believe he made his hair green.”
“His hair was already blonde as it was, he’s lucky it didn’t make his hair bleach blonde.”
“Well that’s not as funny as Joe thinking he’ll be able to wash out that perm he got.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa he thinks what now?”
“Yeah Joe thinks that in the next week or two it’s gonna grow out and go back to normal.”
“Oh my god Joey!” I laughed.
“Like just the other night we were all out in the pub the four of us and he was chatting away to a girl with his Yankees cap on. So I went up and flipped the hat off and said as I pointed to his hair ‘he’s got a perm’!” I couldn’t help but laugh hysterically.
“You are so bad.”
“Yeah. Bad wingman but good friend.” I continued laughing which turned into giggles.
“Ahh Joey, Joey, Joey, Joey.”
“GAHH SON OF A BITCH!!!” we both heard someone call out.
“Uh-oh.” I said as Gwil and I looked at each other and set out stuff aside on a nearby table before racing across the studio and I asked. “What happened?”
“Damn circuits in these lights shocked me and now I can barely feel my hand anymore.” Said one of the light engineers.
“Okay, okay here let me see it.” I walked up to him and held his hand in both of mine. There was some slight swelling but I thankfully no serious burn marks. “Well good news is, is that there’s no serious burn marks. But it is swollen red. I suggest some ice and rest for the rest of the day. And get a medic to check out your reflexes in case the shock might’ve nulled your muscles.”
“But we need another light technician to help us raise these lights for the Madison Square Garden set.” Said a female volunteer.
“You’re looking at your spare one. Besides I’ve spent my whole life with Roger and Brian to know how they want MSG to look. Now, what’s your name?” I turned to the guy who got shocked.
“Arnold.”
“Arnold, go see a medic about your injury and take the rest of the day off. Anyone asks or has a problem with it, send them my way, okay?”
“Okay, thank you.” He said with a slight smile before heading out to the medics trailer.
“Okay now what exactly are we dealing with here?” I asked the seven other light technicians.
“Well we’re trying to make sure all these lights intersect with each other so that they can change colors like they do at the real MSG. Arnold was working on the main circuit board to work the code in when it backfired and you heard what happened as the result.”
“Okay well first things first it could’ve been prevented if he were wearing gloves, rookie mistake.” I then took out my gloves that I always keep on me in my back pocket and put them on. “Goggles.” I said as I extended my arm out and someone handed me some spare goggles. Once I had them on I proceeded to work.
I called out for various equipment pieces like the 4 in 1 Podger rachet, a Leatherman supertool, and some batteries. Once I had the main board opened I began working on finding the loose circuit that probably caused Arnold’s shocking surprise because that needed to be fixed immediately.
Using a mini-flashlight I managed to find the area and found the problem.
“Okay I see the problem. Can someone hold the flashlight for me?”
“I got it.” Said one of the female volunteers as she came up and took the flashlight from me and I went right to work on the wires, making sure they were tucked in correctly and un exposed. It took some time but by the end of it all, I punched the code that was needed for the lights to turn on.
“There, that should do it.” I said as I took my gloves off and removed my goggles.
“Okay boys raise her up!” called the main lighting technician and soon the lights were raised up. Then using his phone, he activated the lights and they soon began shining into a red and blue pattern that would go along with the orange, yellow and green pattern. The light technicians clapped and thanked me for the assistance and when I turned to Gwil, he just had this awed look on his face.
“Sorry you had to see that. Whenever I hear a technical problem I just gotta jump in.”
“Well I’m glad you did. I was amazed to see how you were able to work all that out.”
“Oh it’s not that hard. All I had to do was just tighten the circuits and then replace the batteries while also—oh there I go again. My tech ramblings again, sorry if I’m boring you Gwilym you don’t need to hear all that.”
“No, no, no it’s genius. I mean back when I was doing theater in secondary and university, I never really had a good grasp on the tech theater side of it even though I was trying my best.”
“Not everyone does. I was the only one who took the class seriously back in high school. Everyone else rather just look at their magazines or porno books. Don’t ask me how they snuck it in.”
“Wow, well thankfully they had you to take it seriously.”
“Uh-huh.” I said sadly as I looked down and rubbed my wrist nervously.
“(Y/n)?”
“Hmm?”
“You okay?”
“Yeah, yeah I’m fine. Just—thinking back.”
“Anything you’d…..like to share? I’ve been told I’m a good listener.”
“Thank Gwilym but I don’t wanna bore you with my life. C’mon let’s get back to our food before you’re needed on set again.” I said as I walked away and went back to my donuts and Cinnabons. Gwil followed behind me and began to eat his celery and carrots as well as drinking his coffee, as we ate I tried my best to avoid eye contact with him up until I finished my things and tossed them in the bin before heading out.
Making an excuse that Bri and Rog had texted me saying that they wanted to talk about the lighting and sound for their next concert.
Later that night as everyone was packing up to do some of the outdoor scenes like Adam’s big cameo appearance, I found myself standing away from the set just staring up at the night sky.
“Penny for your thoughts?” I looked up to see Gwil coming by to sit beside me in the spare chair where Adam was just sitting at before he went to hair and makeup.
“Just—taking in the sky.” He looked up and he said.
“It’s a full moon out tonight.”
“Yep. The one time for a straight week where the tides are stronger and can sometimes have an effect on the human mind.”
“Quite the philosopher you are.”
“Well I did minor in it in college. My major was in electrical engineering.”
“So not only good with your hands but also a brilliant mind in philosophy as well. No wonder why Brian calls you the mini-Deacy.” I smiled briefly.
“The reason why I know about the full moon is because of him. He did give me a little lecture on astronomy. But I’d be lying if I didn’t have a fascination with space already. Just—never could understand the specific science talk it came with.”
“I hear yah. When I was a kid; my brother and I would go out to the backyard and we’d just look up at the stars and make as many pictures with them as we could. Sometimes we even stayed out all night. Worried my mum to no end.”
“I think it’d worry me too if my kids ended up staying outside in the cold night with no blankets or a tent to sleep in.” we turned to look at each other and once again Gwil had this awed look on his face, just like he did this afternoon. “What is it?”
“Nothing it’s just…..” he trailed off.
“Just what?”
“Your eyes.”
“M—my eyes?”
“They….they sparkle underneath the moonlight. Almost like they were two stars themselves.” I was speechless. I felt my heart race and my face beginning to heat up. I turned away probably blushing as red as an apple right now. I felt Gwil’s hand gently go on top of mine, before intertwining them together which made me look up at him. It was then I saw him lean closer towards me, his forehead pressing against mine while his nose gently brushed up against mine.
At this point I could hear my heart racing in my ears as the smell of his cologne sent me into a hypnotic state. I felt his hand cup the side of my face as he faintly whispered.
“So beautiful.” But just before he could kiss me, Joe’s voice could be heard from a mile away.
“YO GWIL WHERE ARE YAH!? WE’RE ABOUT TO START FILMING!!!”
“If this is payback for the pub he’s so gonna get it.” I heard him mutter angrily. He turned back towards me and he said, “Sorry love.”
“It’s okay.” I strained out. “Just, just, just, just go film your scenes for the night.” I said as I crossed my arms over me protectively and looked down. I couldn’t look at him, I just couldn’t find the strength to do so. I then heard him walk away and that’s when the tears started pouring down.
I took off running to the nearest place I could find. I didn’t even bother to look and see what it was, all I wanted to know was that I could be alone and that I could cry to myself in peace. I collapsed to the floor on my butt and tucked my legs up into my chest and began to softly cry.
I don’t know how long I was crying in wherever I was for but it was then I heard the door open and soon coming in was Adam and Rami.
“(Y/n)?” Adam said surprised. I felt myself being torn down as I had finally been revealed. I must’ve came into the hair and makeup trailer and now that they were probably calling it quits, everyone would soon come in and see me crying my eyes out.
“(Y/n) you okay?” Rami asked.
“Hey uhh Rami could you give us a moment alone? Maybe guard the door so that no one comes in just yet?”
“Yeah, yeah sure thing.” I heard the door shut and that’s when I saw Adam sit down in front of me. I looked up at him to see him in the truck driver get up with the full beard and long haired wig.
“You were right. Okay you wanna hear me say it Adam Lambert?! You were right! I’m in love with Gwilym Lee!”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa okay. Okay. Calm down, calm down.” He said as he cautiously reached forward and gently gripped my arms in his hands. “I’m happy you finally came to terms with it dearie, that’s great news actually. But what’s got you so upset?”
“For Christ sake Adam tell me you didn’t forget about the bullying I had to endure all throughout middle and high school! And Jared!” at the mention of the boy’s name his eyes widened and he said.
“Okay hold on, wait just a damn second. Gwilym is nowhere near what that dick Jared was. I’ve seen the two of you together and he makes you happier way more than what Jared did.”
“Well Jared made me happy until he did what he did!” I looked down at my knees and continued lowly, “Oh Adam. I thought I could just keep up a friendship with Gwilym, but now I—” I trailed off as more sobs came up my throat as I choked out, “Now I…..I wish I never came here!” I then broke down once more.
I felt Adam sit close beside me before he wrapped his arms around me bringing me into his chest and kissing my forehead as he rubbed my back in soothing circles and stroked down my hair.
Once I calmed down after what felt like crying all night, Adam took me out of the trailer and already I could see a crowd of people including Gwil standing around asking all sorts of questions at seeing me.
“Guys please. No questions are necessary and please don’t ask me because I won’t answer them either. What was said in the trailer stays between (y/n) and me.” Adam made a clear statement before finally taking me away to find Brian or Roger.
When we finally came across Roger, he soon got protective and asked.
“What happened?”
“Roger could you just take (y/n) back to the hotel, I’ll explain later.”
“Alright, come with me lovie.” I was soon switched out from Adam’s arms to Roger’s and he guided me towards his car. He helped me into the backseat where I could hide away while he drove us back to the hotel.
I was now in my room lying on my bed hiding under the blankets after just spending a long time under the hot water trying to get rid of the memories of Jared.
You see—I had met Jared during the first collaboration with Adam and Queen. He was actually one of Brian’s roadies and helped set up all of Brian’s AMPS. We had a common love for electronics and gradated with the same major even being an ocean apart. We shortly began dating afterwards and were madly in love.
But when a serious accident caused him to take an early retirement from being on the road since the damage had been done to his lower back. Which left me to go on the road with Queen and Adam, but we still kept in touch.
Fast forward to just a year ago after four years of dating, I began to wonder if there was gonna be a future with the two of us together. So one day after we had gotten done with a tour, I get a text from Jared saying that the next night he wanted to meet me at the very restaurant where we had our first official date at. Adam of course was thrilled thinking that a proposal was in the horizon so he helped me get dolled up the next morning (even with him being completely jetlagged) and I met Jared at our restaurant.
I was trembling with anxiety but also with joy. He took my hand, looked deep into my eyes and that’s when he dropped the bombshell, but it wasn’t what you’d think it was. Jared had confessed to me in our restaurant where we had our first date, along with many others that he had been cheating on me.
But not just with one woman, not two, not three, but lots of women. All in the entire span we had been dating.
I refused to listen to anything else he had to say as he tried to defend himself. But no that’s not the worst part, the worst part of it was, was that the following day (after crying in Adam’s arms all day), Jared came to the stage where Queen and Adam were performing in London and tried to win me back. Saying that it was just a fluck and that he still loved me with all his heart.
He’d constantly tried to call or text me over 100 times a day. The harassment went on for months till finally I had a restraining order put against him and if he should violate it in the state of England, he’d be arrested. To which he was and was sentenced to five years in jail for refusal to obey the restraining order as well as stalking (yeah he’d stalk me cross country during some of the tours and even snuck backstage and confronted me with arms open and tears rolling down his face).
Ever since then, I’d been afraid to love again because what if they end up being another Jared. Charming, sweet, noble, funny and charismatic, but the second I turn my back he’d go and sleep with half the women in America. And then make me to be the bad guy because I couldn’t give them a chance to explain why he had to cheat.
I heard a knock at the door and I could only groan as my door soon opened and I felt three separate dips around my bed.
“Adam told us (y/n).” Brian’s voice said. I groaned and buried myself into my pillow.
“You know you’ll suffocate yourself if you do that.” Adam said.
“Better that than dealing with this bitch.” I groaned pitifully.
“C’mon (n/n), come out from under there and look at us.” Roger said. I shot up and glared at him and said.
“There, happy? Goodnight!” before I could collapse back down onto the bed, Adam held me up and trapped me in his arms as he said.
“Stay out here.”
“(Y/n). We know that—you know who really hurt you.” Brian started off.
“Hurt doesn’t even come close to how I felt the day he told me that. God never did I want to kill someone until that day.”
“I don’t blame you, none of us do.” Adam said as he rubbed my back. “But you can’t let what Jared did affect you for the rest of your life.”
“Think it’s already a little too late for that.”
“No it’s not. Because look at what you’ve accomplished since his arrest. The only guys you had a close connection with are me and the guys. Now you’ve become friends with Rami, Ben, Joe and Gwil. And what’s even greater is that you’ve come to accept that you’re starting to have feelings for Gwil.” Adam said. I looked down and I said.
“How do I know it’ll work out? What if it’s like Jared all over again?”
“You’ll never know unless you go for it.” Roger said. I looked between the three of them but didn’t answer.
“The choice is up to you (y/n). Just make sure that whatever you do decide, you won’t regret it. And just listen to your heart. We’ll support you no matter what you choose.” Brian said as he placed a comforting hand to my shoulder. I nodded and thanked the guys as they brought me into a group hug.
The next morning I came onto set for the last time (since Adam was done with his cameo, he was needed back at the studio to promote some of his solo stuff, and as his SM manager I needed to be there to spread the word) to confront Gwilym and finally let go of the past (if I could).
I walked around the set till I finally found the person I was searching for. He was fiddling around with a mock Red special practicing before he would have to film the ‘We will rock you’ scene. I took a deep breath in before exhaling out and walked towards him.
“Hey Gwil?” he looked up at me and said.
“(Y/n). You’re—you’re still here. I thought you and Adam already left?”
“No, not till tomorrow. I uhh—I wanted to talk to you. About……” I trailed off and that’s when he stood up setting the guitar down and finished my thought.
“About last night?” I nodded. He sighed heavily as he pressed his hands to his face, “I’m really sorry (y/n). I never meant to upset, I was impulsive and stupid to do that. Can we just forget what happened? I was way out of line.”
“Actually Gwilym I—I have something to confess. But can we talk somewhere privately?”
“Of course, we can talk in my trailer. If you’re comfortable with that.” I nodded and soon the two of us headed towards his trailer.
When we got there, he closed the door and I sat down on his sofa while he sat down at one of his chairs and said.
“Okay (y/n), what is it you need to confess?” my leg was bouncing up and down as I tried to formulate the words that I was about to tell him. I felt the familiar sting of tears in my eyes.
“God I’m sorry.” I choked out.
“No, no, no never feel sorry about this. Please take your time.”
“Last night I—I wasn’t upset because of the, well the about to be kiss. In fact I—I wanted to kiss you too.”
“But.” He stated knowing that I had something else to add on.
“There’s a—reason why I’m so insecure about myself. And—why I haven’t been in a relationship.” I then proceeded to tell him everything. From the bullies at school, to Jared’s story and how badly he had hurt me. Used me. Treated me like trash. By the end of it all, Gwil was leaning up against his chair with a heavy expression.
“That son of a—bloody hell. (Y/n) I—I’m so, so sorry you had to go through that hell.”
“Brian, Roger and Adam made it easier on me. After his arrest they allowed me to take some time off from the rest of the tour that I was dealing with to decompress from all that stress. I thought I would never love someone ever again. Until……I met you.” I admitted the last part shyly.
“You—you love me?”
“It’s okay if you don’t feel the same. I just—had to get it off my chest. So if I’ve made things awkward between us now, I’m sorry. We don’t have to see each other again.”
“(Y/n), (y/n) (y/n) (y/n) (y/n), (y/n).” Gwil came up and knelt in front of me and held my face in his hands. “Sorry you were starting to ramble on so much I could barely understand you.”
“Sorry. Adam always said I did that whenever I get to anxious. Bad trait of mine.”
“No worries love. Now to put your fears and anxiety aside, I want to tell you that I felt the same way about you. After spending these last few weeks together, I came to know the real you and not just through the stories from Brian and Roger. But now hearing this story, which I commend you for telling me. I know you didn’t have to tell me but you did. And I could go on and on about my feelings for you but to summarize it all up, if you’ll give me a chance. I’ll show you that not all men are like that selfish arsehole. I can be the man you deserve. The one who will treat you right, like you’re the only women left on Earth.”
“Do you really mean that?”
“The only girl I’ll love as much as you is my mum.” I smiled and pressed my forehead against Gwil’s and softly thanked him. “I promise (y/n). You’ll be my clever girl.”
“Think I like the sound of that.”
“Well you better get used to it, because there will be a lot of cute little nicknames in the future.”
“Just as long as you don’t give me any cheesy ones like bunny, or cupcake, or turtledove.”

“Gwil stop it you’re making me blush.” He softly chuckled before slowly leaning his lips towards mine and he gave me a soft kiss. When I felt that sudden bolt of electricity shoot up my spine, I knew that Gwil was definitely going to be different than Jared. Even with that soft peck, there was so much passion and love in it that Jared never brought me.
I leaned forward and captured his lips once more, this time brushing my fingers through his short brown hair as I felt his arms slowly wrap further around me.
This was gonna be an adjustment in the days to come. After coming out of the relationship I had, I knew there would be some doubts in the future, especially with Gwil and I having separate careers always being a part from each other (me more than him) but I felt in my bones that when he made that promise earlier, he meant it.
And I was proven right that within 2 years shortly after the Bohemian Rhapsody premiere, I got a proposal right there at the red carpet.

okay so first - stunt stuff !! since nari is a lead in cram school she won’t be apart of the september schedule, but that doesn’t mean she can’t do stunt training !! honestly nari has “ i’m a bad b you can’t kill me ” energy so she probably is going into it thinking she’ll do perfect - boy is she wrong !!
we can take the more antagonistic approach and have someone teasing her about having such high confidence but not doing well, or her trying to compete to perform the stunts they learn better than each other !!
or the more wholesome route where they both encourage / help each other out and use their training to reenact movie fights lmao, or both accept the fact that they’re just not good but decide to have fun with it anyways !!
this doesn’t have to do with any of the missions but i’d love for nari to get closer to the other acting trainees in general !! she doesn’t dorm with them and feels kinda bad about it so really wants a relationship w them !! so acting trainees pls hit her up she will literally bake you pies in return for friendship :)

my face realizing how unproductive i’ve been regarding this: 👁👄👁 I KNOW I KNOW ok but that’s why we are here now i’m here to fill the gap in activity i’ve had !! so let’s go get these threads because i love cram school and so does nari !!
okay so i’m looking for literally anything regarding cram school ! and for reference, she plays the dramatic queen herself miss mijoo ! preparation, rehearsal, actual filming, anything !! all of it helps with character development so i’m not picky at all ! but i will put some ideas:
nari really has a hard time when it comes to memorizing lines, though it’s not something she’d easily admit, mainly because a lot of it has to do with her struggles with her adhd. but she would be very, and i mean very grateful for someone to confide in about it and help each other memorize lines !!
maybe they’ve made it a routine to go out and get coffee and rehearse in the morning before shooting, it started because they both happened to be tired at the same time but now it’s a near everyday thing and they’ve gotten closer because of it ??
nari tends to take acting very seriously, sometimes too seriously, and can act out of character because of it. maybe she snapped on your muse one day without warning because she didn’t think they were taking it seriously / not doing well ? i live for the tea ! on the other hand, they may not have liked how energetic she tends to be off-camera and snapped at her for not staying focused on shooting.
when nari gets in character she really gets into character, so maybe one day on set they thought she really was glaring at them and being rude when really she was just unleashing her inner mijoo lol !! so mayhaps they can end up bonding over the misunderstanding !
someone who might be new or nervous to act that nari always makes sure to encourage, plus throwing in some food encouragement when she feels like it !
CHARITY DAY.
okay so at first at i was like - no i won’t have nari do the farm day - it’s too predictable !! but come on - you mix older people with farming and that is SO nari !! plus she’s so homesick so somewhere like this will do it’s job of soothing her homesickness at least a little, so she’ll definitely enjoy it !!
if anyone going to the farmer village has no farming experience / is totally out of their element, let nari help !! while it’s not her village, she’d be as enthusiastic as ever to tell them all about the countryside and lend a helping hand - pls she will literally pay you
someone to sneak off with to take a break and play with some animals, bonus points for feeding them too !! be warned if baby goats are present nari them both take a million selfies with them !!

Chris Rock wasn’t sure if he was hiding out or not.
On the Friday before Labor Day, he was speaking by phone from Yellow Springs, Ohio, the rustic village where he’d gone to spend time with Dave Chappelle, his friend and fellow comedian. Rock had previously traveled there in July to perform for a small, socially distanced audience as part of an outdoor comedy series Chappelle has been hosting. But Rock couldn’t decide if this return visit was meant to be clandestine. “I don’t know if it’s a secret,” he said quietly. “Maybe it is out here.” He couldn’t easily find the words to describe what he’d been doing just before this trip, either. “I mean, I guess I’ve been acting,” he said. After a short pause, he added, at a more assuredly Rock-like volume: “In a pandemic.”
In August, Rock had gone to Chicago to finish filming the fourth season of “Fargo,” the supremely arch FX crime drama, which makes its debut on Sept. 27. The show’s creator, Noah Hawley, had chosen him to star in its latest story line, set in the dapper gangland of 1950s Kansas City, Mo., and which casts Rock — the indefatigable standup and comic actor — as a mannered, methodical crime lord named Loy Cannon.
Maybe in a different universe where the show premiered in April as originally planned, the “Fargo” role has already put the 55-year-old Rock on a whole new career trajectory, opening the door to more serious and substantial roles and silencing the chorus of fans who still knowingly ask him for “one rib.” Maybe in this universe it still will.
But when the coronavirus pandemic struck, production on “Fargo” was halted in March, and Rock and his co-stars (including Jason Schwartzman, Ben Whishaw, Jessie Buckley and Andrew Bird) were all sent packing. Then at the end of the summer, Rock was summoned back to set, first to spend a week in quarantine and then to complete his acting work under new protocols and not a little bit of stress.
Other prominent projects of his have also been pushed back — he has a starring role in “Spiral,” a reboot of the “Saw” horror series, whose release was postponed a full year to May 2021. But Rock wasn’t mourning the delay of any professional gratification, having spent the spring and summer realigning his values for the new reality of pandemic life. “Maybe for like a day or two, I was like, ‘Oh, me,’” he said with an exaggerated whimper. “But honestly, it was more like, I’ve got to get to my kids and make sure my family is safe.”
In that time he has also heard countless Americans echoing the lesson he offered in the opening minutes of his 2018 standup special, “Tamborine,” where he spoke humorously but emphatically about the ongoing incidents of police violence against Black people. As he said in that routine, law enforcement was among the professions that simply cannot allow “a few bad apples”: “American Airlines can’t be like, ‘You know, most of our pilots like to land. We just got a few bad apples that like to crash in the mountains.’”
Now Rock was feeling mistrustful about the power of his comedy to do anything other than entertain, and unsure when he would get to perform it again for large audiences. And he was admittedly wary about this very interview, explaining with a chuckle that when he talks to the print media, he said, “You have to be comfortable with being boring. If you’re not comfortable with being boring, occasionally, you’re going to get in trouble.”
Not that Rock was ever boring in a wide-ranging conversation that encompassed “Fargo” and his broader career; his latest observations on a nation grappling simultaneously with a pandemic and a reinvigorated longing for racial equality; the resurfacing of a past video where Jimmy Fallon impersonated him in blackface; and of course, President Trump. (“No one has less compassion for humans than a landlord,” he said.) Even in the absence of an audience, Rock was candid, increasingly animated, uncommonly nimble and always looking for the laugh. Now, let the trouble begin.
These are edited excerpts from that conversation.
Was there a time when you thought this “Fargo” season was never going to get finished and that the series might not be seen for a long time, if ever?
I’ve had weird little things in my career — I was supposed to do this Bob Altman movie, “Hands on a Hard Body.” We were on the phone a lot, going over my character and I was so excited about doing the movie. And he died. I was supposed to be Jimmy Olsen in “Superman” with Nic Cage [“Superman Lives,” which was canceled in the late 1990s]. I remember going to Warner Bros., doing a costume fitting. Hanging out with Tim [Burton], who I idolized. Like, I’m hanging out with the guy that made “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and he’s showing me the models of the sets for “Superman.” So yeah, I definitely thought there’s a chance this might not happen. Fortunately for everyone involved, that was not the case.
How did Noah Hawley approach you about “Fargo”?
It was a weird day, because it was the day of the Emmy nominations and I didn’t get nominated for my last special [“Tamborine”]. I wouldn’t say I was down down, but I was a little disappointed, and then I got a call from my agent that Noah Hawley wanted to meet with me.
I get acting offers, but I get more hosting offers than anything. It is not uncommon for somebody to want me to do a high-priced wedding or bar mitzvah — a few years ago, I officiated the wedding of Daniel Ek, the owner of Spotify, and Bruno Mars was the wedding band. I think I sat next to [Mark] Zuckerberg at the reception. [Laughs.] I just assumed Noah had some crazy request like that. The only reason I went is because I love “Fargo.” And I get there and he offers me this part.
How did he explain the character of Loy Cannon to you?
He said 1950s gangster, so I know exactly who he’s talking about. My father was born in 1933. It’s not like “12 Years a Slave.” It’s literally a guy my grandfather’s age.
In the first episode, we see Loy pitching the idea for credit cards to an uninterested white banker. Is he a man who wants to be part of polite society, but it doesn’t want him?
I mean, I remember having a production overall deal at HBO and I came in with one person to sell a talk show with them. And they wouldn’t. That person’s name is Wendy Williams. [Laughs.] That’s $100 million that I never made. I was selling Leslie Jones to people, to agents and managers, for 10 years before she got on “S.N.L.” I’m very familiar with selling a no-brainer that people go, “Huh? Why that?”
Is he different from characters you’ve played before, because he’s older and we don’t know how much longer he’s going to be sitting on his throne?
Yeah, it’s one of those jobs: Because of how well it pays, you could be killed at any moment. It is the best part I’ve ever, ever, ever had. I hope it’s not the best part I ever have. Hey, Morgan Freeman’s done a hundred movies since “Shawshank Redemption.” But that’s the best part he ever had.
This role feels like it’s declaring itself as being outside the realm of what you’re best known for. Are you thinking differently about your acting career and where you hope to go with it?
My casting isn’t as weird as it seems if you really watch “Fargo.” Key and Peele are in the first season and Brad Garrett’s amazing in Season 2. Hey, it’s my turn, OK? I want to work on good stuff. Everything I’ve done hasn’t been great, but I was always striving for greatness. I loved “Marriage Story.” I’d kill for something like that. [Laughs.] You see what [Adam] Sandler did with “Uncut Gems.” But you’ve got to get the call and be ready when your number’s called.
Your 2014 film “Top Five,” which you wrote, directed and starred in, was very personal for you. Do you want to make more movies like that?
That’s a vein I intend to keep going in. When I made “Top Five,” I got divorced. And like most people that get divorced, I needed money. [Laughs.] I had to pay for stuff. I also went on tour. Because of Covid, it doesn’t look like there’s going to be any serious touring until 2022. So I’m a writer-director-actor right now. I’m working on some scripts in the “Top Five” vein and I honestly hope to direct, some time after the new year.
How much of “Fargo” did you have to finish during the pandemic?
It was like an episode and a half — the whole last episode, and some scenes from the one before it. It’s weird, quarantine when you’re acting. Acting can be isolating, anyway, and then you throw quarantine into that. You’re in solitary confinement with Netflix and Uber Eats. But let’s not get it too twisted. Somebody that’s in solitary is like, shut the [expletive] up. And then to actually act and get tested every other day, and wear a mask whenever you’re not saying your lines. And be cognizant of which zone you’re in. Because for Zone A, everyone’s been tested, but in Zone B, not everyone’s been tested. Zone C is just, everyone’s got Covid.
You performed at one of Chappelle’s live shows in July. What was that like for you?
When you’re in the clubs, you learn the rain crowd is the best crowd. Any time it’s raining, they really want to be there. The pandemic crowd is really good. “Dude, not only do we want to be here, there is nothing else to do. There’s nothing else to watch. Thank you.”
What did you talk about?
I talked about our political whatever. America. Part of the reason we’re in the predicament we’re in is, the president’s a landlord. No one has less compassion for humans than a landlord. [Laughs.] And we’re shocked he’s not engaged.
Did you ever see that movie “The Last Emperor,” where like a 5-year-old is the emperor of China? There’s a kid and he’s the king. So I’m like, it’s all the Democrats’ fault. Because you knew that the emperor was 5 years old. And when the emperor’s 5 years old, they only lead in theory. There’s usually an adult who’s like, “OK, this is what we’re really going to do.” And it was totally up to Pelosi and the Democrats. Their thing was, “We’re going to get him impeached,” which was never going to happen. You let the pandemic come in. Yes, we can blame Trump, but he’s really the 5-year-old.
Put it this way: Republicans tell outright lies. Democrats leave out key pieces of the truth that would lead to a more nuanced argument. In a sense, it’s all fake news.
Looking back at the beginning of “Tamborine,” the first several minutes is you talking about police violence and raising Black children in a racist country. Does it feel futile when you discuss these issues and it doesn’t change anything?
I remember when “Tamborine” dropped, I got a lot of flak over that cop thing. There was a lot of people trying to start a fire that never really picked up. It’s so weird that, two years later, it’s right on. I remember watching the news and Trump said “bad apples.” It was like, you did it! You did it!
But you told people two years ago —
I did. But so did Public Enemy. So did KRS-One. So did Marvin Gaye. There’s something about seeing things on camera. If O.J. kills Nicole on camera, the trial is two days. [Laughs.] It’s two days trying to figure out what kind of cell he deserves. It’s just Johnnie going, [Johnnie Cochran voice] “Well I think he needs at least a 12-by-8. Can he have ESPN?” That would be the whole trial.
But there was videotape of Rodney King’s beating, too. It doesn’t assure any particular outcome.
Yeah, man. Put it this way: This is the second great civil rights movement. And Dr. King and those guys were amazing. But they knew nothing about money. They didn’t ask for anything. At the end of the day, the things we got — it was just, hey, can you guys be humane? All we got was, like, humanity. If they had it to do all over again, in hindsight, there would be some attention paid to the financial disparity of all the years of — let’s not even count slavery, let’s just count Jim Crow.
You’re talking about a system that really didn’t end until about 1973. And I’m born in ’65 in South Carolina. I’m probably in a segregated wing of a hospital — there’s no way in the world I was next to a white baby. Even if the hospital wasn’t segregated, I was in a whole other room and that room didn’t have the good milk and the good sheets. My parents couldn’t own property in certain neighborhoods when I was born. There was an economic disparity there, and that was not addressed in the original civil rights movement. It was a huge oversight. So there’s no money and there’s no land. If you don’t have either one of those, you don’t really have much.
Did you want to participate in the recent protests?
Me and my kids, we looked from afar. But we’re in the middle of a pandemic, man, and I know people who have absolutely passed from it. I’m like, dude, this Covid thing is real.
You’ve been telling audiences for years that racism isn’t going away and remains a potent force in America. Do you feel like you’ve seen circumstances improve at all?
It’s real. It’s not going away. I said this before, but Obama becoming the president, it’s progress for white people. It’s not progress for Black people. It’s the Jackie Robinson thing. It’s written like he broke a barrier, as if there weren’t Black people that could play before him. And that’s how white people have learned about racism. They think, when these people work hard enough, they’ll be like Jackie. And the real narrative should be that these people, the Black people, are being abused by a group of people that are mentally handicapped. And we’re trying to get them past their mental handicaps to see that all people are equal.
Humanity isn’t progress — it’s only progress for the person that’s taking your humanity. If a woman’s in an abusive relationship and her husband stops beating her, you wouldn’t say she’s made progress, right? But that’s what we do with Black people. We’re constantly told that we’re making progress. The relationship we’re in — the arranged marriage that we’re in — it’s that we’re getting beat less.
Jimmy Fallon drew significant criticism this past spring for a 20-year-old clip of himself playing you in blackface on “Saturday Night Live.” How did you feel about that segment?
Hey, man, I’m friends with Jimmy. Jimmy’s a great guy. And he didn’t mean anything. A lot of people want to say intention doesn’t matter, but it does. And I don’t think Jimmy Fallon intended to hurt me. And he didn’t.
There’s been a wider push to expunge blackface from any movies or TV shows where it previously appeared. Have people taken it too far?
If I say they are, then I’m the worst guy in the world. There’s literally one answer that ends my whole career. Blackface ain’t cool, OK? That’s my quote. Blackface is bad. Who needs it? It’s so sad, we live in a world now where you have to say, I am so against cancer. “I just assumed you liked cancer.” No, no, no, I am so against it. You have to state so many obvious things you’re against.
Who do you hang with these days? Who’s your peer group?
I hang with Dave [Chappelle]. I hang with my kids. I hang with Nelson George. There’s not a lot of hanging in the Covid world. The better question is, who do you FaceTime with?
So who do you FaceTime with?
The other day I realized I’ve never met an elderly person that was cared for by their friends. Every elderly person I know that’s got any trouble is cared for by a spouse or a child. Sometimes they have like five kids but only one helps. Where are your friends? Your friends are probably not going to be there when it really counts. [Laughs.] When my dad was dying in the hospital, where were his friends? My grandmother, where were her friends? Don’t get me wrong, you get sick in your 20s, your friends will come to the hospital. It’s an adventure. [Laughs.] You get sick in your 60s, they farm it out. “You go Wednesday and I’ll go Sunday.”
Enjoy them while you have them. But if you think your friends are your long-term solution to loneliness, you’re an idiot.

Some Musts for Artists!
As I'm typing this, it is currently midnight on April 12th during the coronavirus pandemic. We're all artists here, so let's go over a few things that we can do as like-minded people. I've been on Deviantart for nearly 6 years now. I recently started a Tumblr and a Ko-Fi to make this a fun side job. Expanding my art network and social media outlets was the name of the game throughout the years, but I thought I'd create a small journal entry or a manual somewhere midway through the process for current and newcoming artists. So, here are some tips and musts for artists that all of you can use! 1.) Practice as often as you can. - This step is pretty self-explanatory. After all, practice makes perfect. You might even unlock hidden potentials that you never thought you had before. Even if you don't feel comfortable using certain tools (e.g., the perspective ruler, mannequins, outlines), making use of them will become much easier if you ease your way into using them. For example, I've always had trouble making backgrounds while using the perspective ruler synchronously, but over time, I eased my way into using it for making settings. Now I use the perspective rulers when I'm trying to capture the essence of a room or an area outdoors. It may be hard to create characters, props, and backgrounds at first, but once you find methods you're best comfortable with, stick with your guns and flesh out your masterpieces with your own unique styles! - I also use thicker sketch lines to make characters and poses just right to accommodate my nearsightedness. I call this technique 'The XL Method.' 2.) Study and Observe from Others. - If you have a favorite show, artist, or animator you like to watch, observe how they flesh out their characters, backgrounds, settings, and stories. Using any of the listed in the last sentence as reference material is a good way to analyze the big picture and make it your own. Of course, you must remember that you're not doing this to mimic your favorite artist, but rather referring to them as a template of sorts. Don't try to stay as someone else's shadow. Your art style is created through your body and soul, not by emulating your idol. 3.) Take care of yourself. - This is probably the most important thing you must NEVER neglect as an artist and overall person. If you can't draw yet due to other responsibilities outside of being an artist, don't try to force yourself afterwards. I've personally seen artists get hounded with questions and comments like 'When's your next page coming out?', 'Finish this project up already!', and even 'I only came here for Undertale. It's the only thing that gives me life. If you stop making Undertale comics and cancel your series, I'm not gonna watch you anymore.' Every artist I follow has been pressured more than once, especially in the Undertale fandom, when they actually put a project on hold, had a desire to draw something else for a while and try new things to take a break, or had other responsibilities outside the digital realm that followers neglect to understand or just don't care about because they're so anxious to see what happens next in a story they like. With followers, some are patient and respect that the artist has other responsibilities and hobbies they'd like to attend to, and others feel like they're entitled to the next page, when really, they're not. This isn't prominent in just the Undertale fandom, but also in many others - so many in fact, that it's a hassle just to list them all. - It's important to balance your lifestyle with things you like to do. If you like to draw, by all means, do it. If you like to read, by all means, do it. If you like to hang out with friends, by all means, do it. If you like to play video games, by all means, do it. If you have to take care of yourself and put your health over everything else first, do it. Do NOT compromise! When it comes to your health and lifestyle, unless it's beneficial to you, nobody else's input matters. Your followers won't get mad at you for it, and the followers undergoing the stages of entitlement will have to shut the hell up and take a hint. You're your own person, not someone else's servant. 4.) Eat! Eat! EAAAAAAAAAAAATTT!!! - Whether it's your favorite food or something jam-packed with nutritious value, eat all the food you want to eat! No artist can operate on an empty stomach. Keep your metabolism going and grab a snack, breakfast, lunch, or dinner. You want an example? Eat popcorn or sushi. Popcorn is high in fiber and helps keep your blood sugar in check as long as you don't drench it in too much butter. I also recommended sushi in this tab too. The reason is because sushi and other types of fish are high in DHA content, which stimulates brain activity and keeps your creative juices flowing. - There are other snacks that can help you stay motivated and full. Yogurt prevents diseases and enhances digestive and weight control. Bananas are high in potassium and help maintain a healthy heart. Chips and hummus go together too! Not only is hummus a good dip filled with fiber and protein, it's also filled with antioxidants! - I can go on and on about what kind of foods you can eat as an artist, but there are too many to list! I just love food THIS much! You'll be sitting here reading this tab all day if I did, so I'll leave the examples in the previous paragraphs for you. Whether it's a snack food, breakfast, lunch, or dinner, feed your body and mind, and you'll definitely make it as an artist! 5.) If you're a comic artist making an original story or building up from someone else's idea with a fanmade comic of your own, achieve total secrecy and wow your viewers later! - Yeah, I know it's great you've finished a comic page to show to your followers, and it has them craving for more. But sometimes, someone else's desire for more pages might be a little too much. Whether you're a regular artist or a comic/fancomic artist, not only is it important to balance your lifestyle, manage your time, and decide when you want to draw an art piece or the next page to your story, but it's also important to limit the amount of desire and demand you take in. - If you don't mind giving your fans spoilers, then that's okay too. But sometimes, achieving complete radio silence and being exclusive helps you get the most work done. - For example, a clothes designer named Geoffrey B. Small utilized a marketing strategy in which he made his clothing line limited and exclusive to shoppers. He doesn't want you to find his clothing. Even more so, he's not interested in being available to everybody. This makes his clothing unique and valuable to the eye of the beholder. If his clothes were found by literally everyone, it would disappoint him and jeopardize the overall exclusivity and value of his products. If your someone who doesn't want anyone to know that you're working on an art piece or a batch of comic pages that's gonna gobsmack your fans, pull a Geoffrey B. Small-esque move and don't leak any info whatsoever. - But IF you must inform your fans your project is still up and running, leave a subtle hint or a W.I.P thumbnail behind. That'll suffice. Keep your fans guessing, even if it means making them succumb to their anxiety or neediness for updates. - Limit any questions or comments you want to take in until you feel ready to reveal your big guns. You decide when you'll work on your art on your OWN terms. 6.) Allow yourself to imagine and enjoy your creative mind going wild before fleshing it out on your tablet or on paper. - Creativity is what makes literally anything in the world come to life! That's how we have the technology, video games, buildings, and other necessities in our generation today. For us artists, our most creative tool is the brain. The brain is the center of all human activity and thought. It's what allows us to imagine what happens next in our stories before we physically flesh them out on our drawing tablets or on paper. I always use my brain to generate a thought in my head that's so powerful, when I close my eyes or flesh it out every second, I can see a glimpse of it playing in my head like a roll of film filled to the brim with moving images for a movie. - It's also beneficial to write out a script, and even pretend you're a character in the story you want to create. - Flesh out your thoughts, play the track over and over again, add more thoughts, put a few funny moments into the mix, and BAM!! You've got an idea! Of course, you must also understand that unless the thought is something long-term you want to remember, you might forget some parts of your idea at first. Some ideas might be some you'll totally dislike later, and that's okay. There's always room for re-imagination and improvement. - Also take to heart that you shouldn't let your creative thoughts take over your real-life responsibilities. Those come first! - Overall, it's important to imagine and have fun going wild before physically bringing your thoughts into being. Let the creativity flow naturally. 7.) Understand you're not perfect, and neither are others. - In the wise words of Mayuri Kurotsuchi from BLEACH, 'Nothing perfect exists.' - 'If something is truly perfect, that's it. The bottom line becomes, there is no room for imagination, no space for intelligence, or ability, or improvement.' - 'Perfection is a dead end, a condition of hopelessness. Always strive to become better than everyone who came before you, but not perfect.' - You need to understand no artist or average working person in the world is perfect. Nobody is better or worse than anyone else. If you start to develop an egotistical sense of perfectionism, stop. You're not Picasso or Van Gogh. You're not better than anyone else. Neither am I. Everyone has their own ways of creating things or getting through the harsh reality of the real world. - The only thing we are is a small part of a bigger picture. We're all here to fill the gaps that plague the digital realm and society as it is today. 8.) Enjoy every minute. - The last thing an artist, viewer, average kid, and/or working adult needs to know is that if you enjoy doing something, it's worth enjoying all the way no matter what anybody else says. Have a good time. Don't let anyone take your modes of enjoyment away from you. Because at the end of the day, everything that lives is designed to end. We don't know when the time will come where we won't or can't enjoy what we love to do today anymore. So take your life and hobbies, make them the most enjoyable and memorable moments of your life, and never let them go! As an artist and overall human being, I care about my own well-being. Hell, I even care about the well-being of strangers and passersby on Deviantart, Tumblr, Ko-Fi, and real life. As such, I feel it's important to share my words of wisdom so you can read, listen, and make them your own. So remember to not only enjoy art or any other hobby or career you wish to pursue, but to never stop growing. Satoyoshi Utano "20 Questions 20 Answers" Haro Puro Love Talk!
In 2018, we’re having a celebration of the Hello! Project 20th Anniversary (Hello Love). For the members who belong to Hello! Project, their thoughts on the 20th anniversary activities and enthusiasm for 2018, thoughts of an everyday idol, we had a passionate “20 questions 20 answers” talk~ This time its BEYOOOOONDS Satoyoshi Utano!!
Satoyoshi Utano = Born September 22nd, 2000. Hometown Tokyo.
Q1: Tell us the meaning of your name! My name is Utano, and my older sister also has a music related name with 3 hiragana characters. I really love music; I grew up listening to western music and R&B. They had wanted a music-related name, so its like there were 3 character candidates to match with my sister. I don’t have memory of it, but on the day I was born there was a feature for a woman who had turned 100, and it seems she said her name was Utano-san. To live well and long, I heard it they felt they wanted me to enjoy my life.
Q2: What senior are you aiming towards?
Morning Musume ‘19’s Oda Sakura-san and, Angerme’s Nakanishi Kana-san. I have a thing for voices, Oda-san’s voice is all-mighty. With a clear voice it can be cute or cool-like. She changes her voice is like magic, its really amazing. Also I really like how Oda-san thinks. I think the way she thinks about idols and herself is cool; I respect her as an idol and also as a girl. Nakanishi-san is really a stoic hard-worker. For Nakanishi-san and myself, without being in Hello! Project Kenshuusei we joined Hello! Project. I knew of Nakanishi-san from since she underwent the auditions, and although there were those that had been Kenshuusei in her generation she would tackle things with a smile even though they were difficult. She is cute and cool with a good style range, I think its wonderful how her various charms come out.
Q3: Who would you want to be reborn as?
Angerme’s Kamikokuryo Moe-san. Visually, her clear voice, and with her atmosphere, I like everything. I also like her kind of face! Also, I had the opportunity to sing an Angerme song in the Hello! Project concert shuffle corner, and I was in charge of Kamikokuryo-san’s part. I wasn’t able to do it well but, Kamikokuryo-san taught me “Watch this video” and “Do it in this way”. During rehearsals she would say “the dialogue you did just now was good!”, I was thankful and happy that she would do those things casually. I think I’d also like to become a senior like that.
Q4: What are you the best at in Hello! Project?
I think what I’m absolutely number one in, is my love for the things that I love. There are various things like animals and women crime scene investigators and precure. Also making accessories, I can’t lose in my hands dexterity! But, I want to be the best at dancing. It’s absolutely dancing.
Q5: Tell us something amazing about Hello! Project!
Its broad. I think Hello! Project is an established genre, its not just cute or cool songs, in a different vector as there are a variety of songs like play-like songs and exciting songs. Since there is no end to each songs dancing, singing or expressions, that there is cool. Since Hello! Project lives are really cool, I think that is a charm.
Q6: Who would you want to be in a Hello! Project special unit with?
There are a variety I’d want do it with, I’d like to dance with those who are good at dancing! Also, I’d want to sing a cute song with Yokoyama Reina-san (Morning Musume ’19), Kawamura Ayano-san (Angerme), Ozeki Mai-san (Country Girls), Shimakura Rika-chan and Okamura Minami-chan (BEYOOOOONDS)!
Q7: Tell us a BEYOOOOONDS song you like!
“Megane no Otoko no Ko” is fun! Since its like its made for a play, there is a proper development in the lyrics and story. Therefore, I think I’d want you to enjoy the differences in expressions from the beginning to the end. Its easy to get into the emotions, I really like it.
Q8: What is a Hello! Project song you like?
Hm—There are a lot--! I really like a lot of them but, what I’m into now is Tsubaki Factory-san’s “Fuwari, Koi Dokei” and Juice=Juice’s “Borderline”. Seeing them at the Harocon rehearsals, I ended up getting into them.
Q9: What is the difference between current and previous Hello! Project?
When I look at the fans, and I also feel that the groups characteristics are more clearly visible. That is to say it feels like cute songs are for Country Girls-san, and pure songs are for Tsubaki Factory-san.
Q10: Other than yourself, who would you recommend as an oshi?
Everyone as a whole (laughs). Since the personalities are really scattered around, there is definitely a girl you’d come to like in Hello. You’ll definitely find the girl you like! Within BEYOOOOONDS there is also an explosion of personality but, Maeda Kokoro-chan! I have a thing for voices so its come out that I like her voice (laughs). Now Maeda Kokoro-chan has a boyish character, but there are many parts of her that are girl-like. She’s able to be really attentive and kind, I think you’ll end up falling in love with her.
Q11: What do you want us to see most from yourself?
Its dance after all. Since I like creating my own choreography, I think from now on it’d be nice to put out those kinds of things. Also my voice. I have a complex about it but, I’ve entered a world where I’ve been told a lot “your voice is characteristic” and “what a nice voice”. I’ve also come to really like singing. I had made a wall for myself that I wasn’t suited for singing, but that isn’t the case, and I came to want to try work where I’d use my voice. Just listening to songs, it’d make me happy if you came to think “isn’t that Satoyoshi?”.
Q12: What is work you want to challenge?
Something in relation with my voice and choreography. Also since I like makeup, I’d like to try something related to beauty! Making someone pretty, like producing the members or something. Like what colors look good on the members, I’d want to do something with that kind of atmosphere.
Q13: What do you want us to see most from BEYOOOOONDS?
There are a lot of us who are good at expressions in plays, I’d want you to see that. If we’re doing a cute song there are those who are good with that, but there are also those who are the best at cool songs. We can do everything! That’s what I want you to see. Including the retro feel, I want you to see that.
Q14: What will you be doing in 20 years?
I think I’ll be continuing dancing and being in plays. I’ve been trying various things since I was small, and these are two things that I haven’t gotten tired of. Therefore, surely I’ll be continuing with it, I also don’t think I’ll want to stop. Also like my pretty older sister, I want to become a wonderful woman. Now I feel like I’m still an 18-year-old; I think I’ll want to grow as a woman.
Q15: Since it’s the 20th anniversary, tell us a secret! I’ve pretty much said my secrets (laughs). Every morning I wake up early and when I return home, and before bed, I smell my dog Omochi-kun while spinning around (laughs). They’re a Maltese, I’m already in love with them. But, I don’t like others doing it. I don’t think I can show the level of disgust I get to towards that (laughs).
Q16: What do you want to be able to do after a year?
I want to grow with singing. Now that’s my biggest challenge. I’m inexperienced in how to use my own voice, it feels like I’m learning while fumbling around. I think I want to do my best to become good at singing.
Q17: What would you be doing if you weren’t an idol?
Originally I didn’t plan on going to school. I began the audition in May, at that time I had decided to find a job with Hello!. I wonder what would have happened, with dancing and plays, I think I’d be doing my best to be active with them.
Q18: What are you most into right now?
There is a lot but, pickled vegetables. I’m also into vinegar rice rolls. I’ve made them at home, but I’ll buy them if I haven’t made them. Recently, I received Kyoto sake pickled vegetables, that made me really happy. I like vinegar rice rolls, plum natto, and toro rolls, I like the elasticity of the seaweed.
Q19: Who do you get along with in Hello! Project? Tell us a recent episode!
I get along with everyone in BEYOOOOONDS, but other than those members, Angerme’s Ise Reira-chan, who had the same timing of debut. I’m about 3 years older than her, but talking about that sense of distance is really fun. We like the same character “Mossari Mosao”, the first time I went to the collaboration café I was in line near her by chance! I was side by side with my sister, and then I saw the back of her. I wanted to leave from the coincidence, and we both talked about it on our blogs.
Q20: What is an idol to you?
There is a big impact with girls from the same generation as you doing their best singing when times are tough, since it’s something that comes from within, I think idols are people who absolutely have the presence of sending out energy and smiles. I think they’re really cool. Of course, that is true of others artists, as I also get energy from other artists music. But, idols have more of a presence of the familiar. There are penlights in the color of the member you like, you call their name, you send your own cheers for the idol. I think the feelings of sending out your support is really a happy thing; I as well with blogs and lives hearing “Utano—” or “Utano—n” voices call out gives me a lot of energy. I think the communication with idols is good, and its not just with handshakes, I want to communicate my feelings of thanks for receiving lots of support directly. I think that getting to communicate with an idol is a good thing. I’m not able to say it in a word!

C3AFA 2017 B-Pro Stage Report
Alright folks… so I promised some of you that I would be writing a detailed post about my C3AFA Singapore 2017 experience of the B-pro Stage and Meet and Greet sessions. I’m a rambly person by nature, so the post turned out longer than expected. Hence, it’ll come in two parts – I’ll post about the Meet and Greet session separately. Also, Kakki said that he’s a 35-year-old ojisan (like repeatedly!), so please forgive this obasan (who is of the same age) for having a memory like Swiss cheese! My proficiency in Japanese is really low, so I couldn’t catch most of the finer details. Please correct me if some of the quotations are wrong! Also, some details may be in the wrong sequence, so I’d appreciate any comments or suggested corrections from those who also attended the event. Please note also that there may be a huge Kakki-bias in this report, but I’ll try to be fair to the Tosshi fans who are reading this write-up. Do be mentally prepared for unabashed gushing ahead though! Sigh… they’re both so adorkable!
First up, the B-Pro Stage!
The emcees (translators) did a short round of self-introduction before inviting Kakki and Tosshi to come onstage to wild applause and screams from the mostly female crowd. Tosshi had a black hat on and wore a white long-sleeved shirt with a checkered design and dark pants, while Kakki wore a black T-shirt, grey pants, a black long-sleeved shirt over the T-shirt and dark sneakers with white laces. (Which begs the question… why the added layer, Kakki? You’ve got beautiful muscled arms and Singapore’s a swelteringly hot country… single layers next time yo! Sorry, I digress…) We screamed “konnichiwa!” at both of them once they greeted us. Tosshi attempted to add English words whenever he could, which was really cute! Kakki greeted us impersonating Morikubo Showtaro’s voice, before switching to his regular voice. Tosshi remarked that we, the audience, were really able to understand Japanese well! ("Yappari, nihongo wakarimasu desu ne!") and the fans screamed in response. They then sat towards stage left (*my side! Yay!*), with Kakki on the outermost bar stool, which he kept spinning back and forth on throughout the Q&A. (He’s so twitchy! XD)
B-project = Beard Project?
Before the interview could commence properly, the seiyuus began commenting on the bushy appearance of the male emcee, who is an ethnic Sikh currently studying to become a voice actor in Japan. According to the female emcee, Kakki and Tosshi were saying that they were amazed by the male emcee’s beard, for they did not know where it ended and where his black jacket began! The emcee is 26 years old, and been growing his beard ever since he was 13. (Note: Traditionally, the Sikhs are unshorn from birth.) Kakki and Tosshi couldn’t believe that he was only 26 (the beard made him look so much older), which cued the male emcee asked them how old they were. Tosshi said he was 33 while Kakki said he was 35 – an ojisan; then remarked that they looked the same age as the male emcee. They then said that they aimed to grow their own beards too, so B-project would now mean ‘Beard Project’!
On Singapore and speaking English
The emcees asked if they had been to Singapore before. Tosshi said that he was in Singapore for the first time, and repeated “first time” in English once he heard the translation. This became a running joke throughout the Q&A, because whenever he could, Tosshi would suddenly say “first time!”. Kakki said that he had come once when he was very young, so he did not remember his first experience here. However, he believed that this trip would be much more memorable. When the male emcee translated his words, Kakki listened intently and then pointed at him and said “Yes, exactly!” to the cheers of the audience upon hearing the English words. Tosshi then remarked that Kakki should just speak in English without the translator’s help since he could understand the language so well, but Kakki said that he would rather not because English is hard for him and it gives him a headache to think in English. At this point, he mimicked collapsing from overexertion on his stool. (So cute!) The interviewers then asked what food they have tried / want to try in Singapore. Tosshi immediately said “Jumbo” (a Chinese seafood restaurant chain), where they ate chilli crab and cereal prawns. According to Kakki, Tosshi liked the prawns so much that he ate everything - tails, shell and all! Tosshi added “First time!” to emphasise his enjoyment of the dish.
Kakki’s “I woke up late” Story
Next, the seiyuus were asked if they had any tips for the male emcee on becoming a seiyuu. I blanked out at this stage and don’t remember what Tosshi’s response was because Kakki chose this moment to stare at my side of the audience (dare I say it, right at me!) and was smiling flirtatiously! (I should have waved or blown him a kiss damn it…. But I was just frozen to the spot, staring and smiling dumbly back at him!) So anyway, Tosshi called him out for his inattention and Kakki had to ask what the question was again. Once he heard it, Kakki sheepishly said that it is the most important to be on time for their recordings. Tosshi immediately began laughing and said that the C3AFA panel almost didn’t happen because Kakki woke up late the day before, and almost didn’t make the plane to Singapore! However, he also said that rather than being worried about having to come to Singapore to do the panel by himself, he was more amused at the thought of the face Kakki would have upon his arrival at the airport.
Here’s a recount of the hilarious incident. Apparently Kakki was supposed to leave at 8.30am that morning, but ended up WAKING UP AT 8.30am. Kakki began demonstrating his rushed packing of the suitcase, yelling “zen zen dame da!” (“Everything is NOT okay!”) when his manager called to ask if everything was alright, his wild drive to the airport and finally his arrival there, where he had to find the way to get to the ticket counter the most quickly. He had wanted to make a cool and suave entry, but basically ended up sprawling on top of his suitcase and sliding all the way to the check-in counter! At this point, he used the bar stool to demonstrate the undignified position he was in, complete with legs raised off the floor. The audience was in stitches by then, whether they understood Japanese or not. The male emcee then translated his words (and Kakki again said, “That’s right, exactly!” to the translation), but added that he would not repeat the physical demonstration.
I Voice Therefore I Am
The actors were asked about what they had in common with the B-pro characters they were voicing. Tosshi is quite the comedian actually, so he has very little in common with Kaneshiro Goshi, who is a tsundere type character. Completely straight-faced, he said, “I sing. We share the same voice!” much to the audience’s amusement. Kakki reacted with great enthusiasm to the background screen which showed the characters’ pictures and their profiles, and his attention was drawn to Momotarou Onzai’s blood type. He was like “Eh?! It’s AB too?” and then he said that another similarity was that both he and Momo are “machi shokai” (city boys). (Note to those who don’t know: Kakki’s hobby is asking for and memorising the blood types of other people, because he himself has the rarest blood type, ABRh-.)
Being a Seiyuu = taihen desu yo!
The actors were asked what the recording atmosphere is like. Tosshi gravely said, “Taihen desu yo!” (“It’s very tough!”) with a pointed look at Kakki, who was like “Who, me?”. Then, Tosshi added that he actually also plays around with the others sometimes, and they made sheep sounds together (or rather, they both attempted to impersonate Morikubo Showtaro! XD) Apparently, in the recording studio, many of the actors who are familiar with one another tend to fool around, and Tosshi is often the mature and adult-like one who tries to bring everyone back to serious mode while Kakki plays around a lot. That said, they all have a lot of fun during the recording, especially because they are all familiar with their characters by the time they step into the studio to record the songs.
On surprises
The actors were asked what has surprised them since becoming a seiyuu. Tosshi said that he was surprised that B-project has fans even in Singapore. Another thing that surprised him about their job is the need for seiyuus to go for tv shows, interviews and events. As for Kakki, he said that when male voice actors enter the industry, they expect to voice shonen characters in mecha animes, but here he was voicing an idol bishounen years younger than himself. It is surprising to him that he gets to act as an idol-type character at his age. At this point, he stood up and said dramatically, “I’m a 35-year-old ojisan!” (You’re not old, Kakki, damn it! By the way, I’m born in the same year as you, so does that make me an ancient relic?! Besides, you look much younger than your actual age, you ageless freak… ok sorry, I really love you!)
Wonderful Japan?
The emcees asked Kakki and Tosshi what they thought was wonderful about Japan. Both of them looked quite clueless about where to begin, then Kakki said that the fans should know better what is wonderful about Japan, because to them, they take a lot of things for granted living there. They don’t understand what is wonderful about Tokyo Tower and rarely even go there, but tourists seem to know a lot more about it. They said that the food is delicious there, but that food is also delicious here in Singapore. They also asked the audience what we loved most about Japan, to which we yelled “Anime!”
Final words
Tosshi expressed his gratitude to Kakki for inviting him to accompany him to C3AFA Singapore 2017. Apparently, Kakki had been asked which fellow voice actor he wanted to come to Singapore with, and he had said, “I want Toyonaga-kun to come with me.” Hence, Tosshi was in Singapore for his “first time!”. Kakki said that he was grateful for the opportunity to come here. Both Kakki and Tosshi were only told that the anime would have a second season and they did not know any more details about it, yet here they were all the way from Japan to promote it. Both of them said that they were happy that we were able to learn Japanese by watching anime. They thanked the fans for making the stage event a truly enjoyable one. When they headed backstage, Kakki turned around to wave at the audience again before they disappeared behind the curtain.
Overall thoughts (Warning: gushfest ahead)
Both of them were adorable and so down-to-earth! I didn’t know much about Tosshi prior to this event, but I had a really good impression of him after this! By the way, the way Tosshi yells “Urusaiiii!” is so manly and assertive. He may be small-sized, but he has a huge presence. I was greatly amused by his sense of comedic timing.
Kakki is beautiful… and so twitchy! Kakki kept swivelling from side to side on his bar stool, and also adjusted the height at one point so that he could swivel more comfortably. It was hypnotizing to watch actually! His eyes look really large even from a distance, and when he stared in my direction I was just struck dumb by the sheer force of that gaze. *slaps self* In person, he’s so bouncy! I cannot believe that he actually demonstrated the sprawling position on the bar stool (which is hard plastic by the way!)
Right, this report is already pushing 2000 words, and I’m just through with the stage part… Please stay tuned for my impression of the Meet and Greet session! I’ll post that sometime later this week or next week. (INTERVIEW) The all-girl K-pop group with a unique coming together story
LOOΠΔ are a girl group who are ambitiously announcing their 12 members over a string of solo singles – we speak to the members of subunit ODD EYE CIRCLE
A little over a year ago, something big was quietly manifesting on the edges of South Korean pop music with the reveal of HeeJin, a then-15-year-old who was the first person to be announced for a new, 12-member girl group called LOOΠΔ. The process of introducing LOOΠΔ to the world ranks as one of the more ambitious projects undertaken by a single entertainment agency (in this case, Blockberry Creative), with each of the group’s members unveiled not over a matter of weeks but over 18 months. Each girl has a symbolic colour and animal, and each releases a solo pre-debut single and video, interspersed with music by subunits formed of the already-revealed members.
While LOOΠΔ’s multi-pronged announcement strategy might seem hard to wrap your head round, large scale concepts and storylines for girl groups aren’t an anomaly in K-Pop. One only need look back upon T-ara’s 15-minute film around “Cry Cry” and videos like “Lovey Dovey” for precedents, or to newer groups like the J-rock-centric Dreamcatcher and GFriend’s ‘school trilogy’ of music videos. But LOOΠΔ stand apart amongst girl groups and even in the wider K-Pop world for the sheer ambition of their world-building, with each music video knotting another thread into an increasingly complex web of theories and imagery. Only EXO have in recent memory so carefully created a far-reaching origin story.
LOOΠΔ are yet to make their official debut. Right now there are still four members who’ve yet to be revealed – currently HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, ViVi and YeoJin make up the subunit LOOΠΔ ⅓, while Kim Lip, JinSoul and Choerry combine for LOOΠΔ/ODD EYE CIRCLE. For now it’s the latter who have become key purveyors of what’s known as the ‘LOOΠΔVERSE’. The trio’s solos (Kim Lip’s “Eclipse”, JinSoul’s “Singing in the Rain”, Choerry’s “Love Cherry Motion”) are sleek, compelling cuts of electronic pop, stylistically linked via their MVs (music videos) and tinged with 90s R&B, future bass and Katy Perry-esque vibes respectively. As LOOΠΔ/ODD EYE CIRCLE, they’ve also solidified themselves as one of 2017’s brightest groups, with both their EP Mix & Match (which climbed to #10 on Billboard’s World Chart) and its just-released repackage Max & Match pulling together the boldest elements of their individual songs.
“Chaotic”, “Uncover” and “Starlight” are drenched in unpredictable percussion and spacey synths against the girls’ feathery yet firm vocals, while on “LOONATIC”, they skip beyond familiar turf and channel Grimes’s dream pop. Two singles – the upbeat and assured “Girl Front” and “Sweet Crazy Love” – pile on new and existing visual clues (circular mirrors, maps, their ‘odd’ eyes) and recreate shots from the group’s previous videos.
As they discuss the struggles of debuting and breaking the mold, Choerry (at 16 the youngest of the three) calls their overarching concept “a first”. “It’s new, intriguing, and we’re proud,” she says. “It’s like being in a fairytale.” Open and assiduous for this, their first ever international interview, Kim Lip, JinSoul and Choerry are also feisty, confident and endearingly prone to dissing each other like siblings. Say hello to your new favourite girl group.
You each have a colour and an animal... did you get to choose either?
Kim Lip: The company chose each animal based on each member’s character. When I heard I would be an owl, for a moment I was like, ‘Huh?’, because everyone would want something pretty, like the deer for ViVi or a cat for HyunJin. But I like my symbol animal now. I think it goes well with my solo track.
JinSoul: When we first heard Choerry would be the fruit bat, everyone was surprised because it’s not very girl group-like. But given that Choerry will be going back and forth between both LOOΠΔ ⅓ and the new one coming later, I believe it fits the theory very well.

Theories already abound about multiple dimensions in the LOOΠΔVERSE – one for each sub-unit, including those yet-to-debut – and everyone needs to find each other to debut a whole. Can you give us any hint to the full story?
Kim Lip: There are several theories, but we want to show the process of putting puzzles together through our videos and music. I’ll give you one hint – we’re wearing a band on our wrists based on each of our colours and that band is twisted. People might not have noticed, but ‘Möbius’ is an important hint for LOOΠΔ moving forward.
JinSoul: LOOΠΔ is 12 solos, three units, then the complete group, but I can tell you that this is not the end, rather just a beginning. There could be a new unit with different combinations, for example, HyunJin and I could be a new unit.
It’s unheard of for girl groups to develop narratives that are as complicated and prolonged as yours. What did you think about LOOΠΔ not only having a story but their own world?
Kim Lip: When we first heard about – like, how it would be actualised – we were quite surprised, because normally girl groups would just perform good songs with nice clothes. But as the theory unfolds, even we’ve gotten more curious and we’re finding it enjoyable!
If I said LOOΠΔ has the potential to change the creative landscape for K-Pop girl groups, how would you feel about that?
Kim Lip: It’s definitely a goal we’d like to achieve. Each solo has its own power, and each unit has an independent power rather be a typical unit, then all together we become LOOΠΔ. We want to be like Marvel’s Avengers.
How did each of you join LOOΠΔ? What did your friends and family say when you told them you were to be in an idol group?
Kim Lip: I tried out in so many auditions to find the right agency. I was pretty exhausted. But then my company contacted me through Instagram. I auditioned, made it, and became a trainee. It was challenging to adjust, realising ‘This is what a trainee’s life is like,’ and I spent time worrying about if I’d be able to become a member. But I practiced hard and finally became part of LOOΠΔ. All my family and friends celebrated with me. They were as happy as I was.
JinSoul: I auditioned a lot. I had good opportunities through street casting but didn’t make it through. But, like Lip, our company contacted me through Instagram. My family is very proud, and my friends have been supporting me a lot even before my debut.
Choerry: I participated in a vocal contest and got casted for an audition and became a trainee. My parents didn’t like the idea of me becoming a singer at the beginning, but they support me a lot now and give me the strength to go on.
LOOΠΔ/ODD EYE CIRCLE is said to have ‘strange and mysterious charms’. What’s your strange charm that only your family or friends understand fully?
Choerry: Kim Lip may pretend to be inattentive or indifferent, but actually she always keeps her eyes on others and takes care of them. She has that cold-but-warm charm.
Kim Lip: JinSoul may look cold and have a strong personality but, in fact, she has sloppy charms (makes cute mistakes).
Kim Lip: Choerry has a bright energy and charm to think always positively, even in bad situations.
Your EP has several tracks that really stand out for their ethereal synth pop. Which track seemed most interesting to you at first?
JinSoul: I have affection for all the tracks, but I liked ‘LOONATIC’ especially because it’s a type of genre only we can do in K-Pop.
Choerry: Also, ‘Chaotic’ is a bit masculine, but we’re proud to express it with our voices.
LOOΠΔ/ODD EYE CIRCLE is based around the ‘girl crush’ attitude – what does that mean to you personally?
Kim Lip: Girl crush for me is a complete turning point from (the ‘pure’ image of) LOOΠΔ ⅓.
Choerry: I think it’s a girl who has a strong gaze and who is cool, a girl who approaches proactively and confidently. Girl crush might be difficult to pull off, but I think we’re good at creating a strong appearance, so it fits us. Haha!
Lip, you have a natural authority about you on and off stage. Have you always been this type of confident person?
Kim Lip: When I was little, I was so shy that I couldn’t even get food on my plate at a buffet. When I thought ‘I want to be a singer’ and went to audition, I thought I should become more confident. I tried hard to change my personality so I could become the Kim Lip of now.
What did you emotionally experience while waiting to debut? What was your biggest fear and biggest hope?
JinSoul: Would I really make it to debut? I did my best in everything with many thoughts. In the beginning, I was shy and had low self-esteem, so I was worried if it’d be okay to debut with this talent and visual (appearance). But I was also so excited for my song coming out!
Choerry, you’re still at school... what does the average day look like for you? How do you juggle schoolwork, rehearsing and performing?
Choerry: Normally I wake up at 6am and go to school. When I have a schedule, I attend only morning classes or take a day off, so it’s sad that I don’t have much opportunity to meet with friends.
Now you’re promoting as a trio and spending a lot of time together, what’s something new you’ve discovered about each other?
Kim Lip: I didn’t know when JinSoul was a trainee but, as we’ve lived together, I’ve noticed her sleeping with her eyes open. I thought it was only in the car because it’s quite uncomfortable, but she always sleeps with her eyes open.
JinSoul: Choerry tends to be bloated well in the morning, so when she wakes up, her double eyelid is gone. So in the morning it’s quite different version of Choerry.
Choerry: Lip is very easy-going, that was quite unexpected. But she is surprisingly cleaner than I expected.

Review Roundup - Week 4 January 2018
Hello, my lovely baby boos!! My name is Jace (aka Felicity B), and welcome to your Weekly Roundup for Week 4 of January 2018!! This week was something else, sis. I must have listened to 40 or 50 different songs for this week's list. It was cray!! For these kinds of lists, the last thing I wanna do is leave off songs because I don't like them, but that's what I ended up having to do. This week's list was getting excessively long (is still excessively long), but the last thing we need here is an RRU with 20 ballads.
That being said, there's a lot of songs here with "I liked it, it was good" reviews. There's not much I can do about that. A lot of the music that came out this week was very middle of the road. They're good songs, don't get me wrong; I'd throw very few of them into the Shuffle Bait. But there's just not much to say about them.

Turn It Up (RAINZ)
*sigh*
I really wanted to like this song, you guys. That chorus is Rave Excellence™ (if EDM tracks from rookie boy bands sounded like this, I wouldn't hate them so much). It's fucking everything, sis. And you know, I can excuse RAINZ for conjuring the spirit of 4minute with that New and Improved™ Hate breakdown. Everything leading up to it was bomb af, so I can get over myself with how annoyed I was by it.
But what I refuse to get over is DUBSTEP IN 2018!! ABSOLUTELY NOT!!
NO MA'AM!!
I don't know what makes Turn It Up pop so much more than tracks we've heard from groups like UP10TION or SF9 or ViCTON, because like I mentioned before, it's all in the same lane. Sure, that chorus makes my inner gay wanna come charging out and kiss five boys before rolling around in body paint (and then proceed to kiss five more boys), but this isn't anything we haven't heard before, musically. There's nothing inherently fun about this song (just extremely gay, which... RAINZ is a Broduce 101 project group, so of course), I just really freaking like it.
I just can't get over dubstep in 2018. If I had the means to cut it out of the track, I would be featuring that version in the official playlist.

NO MORE (LIMZY featuring Huckleberry P)
No More is an exercise in RnB influenced Trip Hop/EDM that I wasn't sure I was gonna like, at first. This weirdly disjointed flavor of electroRnB is really not my taste, and the fact that LIMZY pushed it more left field than I've heard before really didn't help matters.
But No More is charming in its own way. The more I listened to it, the more it grew on me. LIMZY's smooth vocals are a nice foil to the weirdness of the beat, and Huckleberry P's rap didn't irritate me as much as I thought it would. I gotta be in a certain mood to really enjoy a song like this, but when I'm in said mood, catch me dissociating to No More.

A luminous cat (Evolution of Sound)
A luminous cat is kind of basic, but it's also kind of fun. It's hella catchy, too.
Would you say that the luminous cat is also a lucky cat?!?!?!
I've always found it interesting how the farther away from K-Pop you get, the lower everyone's voices get. Ballad singers live in the low baritone/mezzo soprano range (although some of them think they live in soprano/tenor land, and they need to Stop Stop It™), and EoS's vocalist is the same. He's got a voice on him like WINNER's Kang Seung Yoon, but not quite as raspy. It's really nice to listen to.
A luminous cat is a synth driven pop/rock song. The first time I listened to it, I was bored as fuck all. The teaser had a lil somethin' somethin' goin' on, but the song fell flat in full. Upon repeat listens, A luminous cat hooks you in, but this is not a track I really wanna play all of the time. Which is a shame, cause I don't hear this type of sound a lot in Korean music.

Ttongkku (Park Jongchul)
This is the cutest fucking thing I've ever seen in my life. And I stan Kim Jongin, okay?!?!? Do y'all know how cute my mans is?!!? But this video is even cuter than him!!!

Ttongkku is a very whimsical acoustic ballad (for lack of a better descriptor). With the way Ttongkku is written, I'd expect this to be from something for children. The majority of the song follows the same strum pattern, just with different chord progressions swapped in, so Ttongkku is perhaps one of the most simple songs I've reviewed. That doesn't take away from how great this song is, tho. It's a really nice break from all the flashiness of K-Pop, which can easily wear on the ears.

To Heart (fromis_9)
To Heart sounds like the theme song from a 2008 shoujo anime. I shouldn't be surprised considering their pre-release track, Glass Shoes, also sounded like that, and the inspiration behind Idol School is definitely Japanese idol groups. It's just not a sound you hear a lot in K-Pop.
fromis_9 (pronounced Promise 9, even though I still pronounce it like it's written without meaning to) is the group that resulted from last year's survival show Idol School. You know, when everyone was suddenly concerned about the ethnics of all these survival shows, because it wasn't under the Produce banner.

While I liked Glass Shoes (and appreciated K-Pop's modern production techniques being applied to a song like it), it was definitely nothing to write home about. It was easy to lose it in the craziness that is end of the shows and what not. To Heart is, unfortunately, more of the same, but it definitely holds its own.
To Heart is an upbeat, happy go lucky pop/rock track with a really catchy violin riff layered on top of the intro and chorus bits. The verses are rather lowkey, but the chorus puts the pedal to the metal with the energy. You don't really hear a lot of lighter pop/rock tracks in K-Pop, so this is definitely a sound I'd like for fromis_9 to explore more, because it could easily give them a leg up on all the other cutesy girl groups. Tis a good comeback, but that's literally it for me, sis.

Jazzclub (BoA)
Current Dancing Queen of K-Pop, Kwon BoA, has set her sights on Japan with a new album, set to release in February of 2018 (and it was about fuckin' time, because Who's Back was an abominable Mess™)!! Jazzclub is a song that's been floating around since December, but I'm including it in today's list per request since the single actually dropped last week.
Um... Whom tf just calls their ex out of the blue to tell them they got married?! Every time I watch the video for Jazzclub, I'm so confused by why this bit is included (they literally could've just started with BoA in the club with the song playing).
To the surprise of quite a few people (myself included), Jazzclub is an electroswing track with one of the catchiest horn riffs I've heard in K-Pop. If you're over horn riffs in K-Pop, you'll be happy to know that while it is played at the intro and after every chorus, those sections don't last for long. The most surprising bit about this song is definitely when BoA starts scat singing. Never in my life would I ever expect Kwon Boah to start scat singing in one of her songs, but I guess that just goes to show why she's the Queen.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about Jazzclub, babies. I obviously don't hate it, but there's just something keeping me from falling in love with this song completely. I definitely enjoy the chorus, that horn riff doesn't really bother me (I been listening to all kinds of horns in my music since I was a baby), and I was scalpedt by BoA's scat singing. But this song just doesn't come together the way I need it to, sis. BoA seems like she's phoning it in here, and that's the opposite of what someone in her stature should be doing.

Don't Stop (TheEastLight.)
TheFetusLight. TheEastLight. weren't content with shaving our edges off with the Funky Fresh™ A Real Man last week, so they decided to drop a lyric video for their song Don't Stop to finish the job.
Of shaving us baldt, that is.
Don't Stop is a pop/punk number that I immediately latched onto. It simply suits TheFetusLight. TheEastLight. far more than A Real Man did. Not to say that they did MJ wrong with A Real Man, but Don't Stop feels more like their style. TheFetusLight. TheEastLight. do more youthful n fun tracks like this (and I Got You) far better than they do songs like A Real Man and You're My Love, because these types of songs suit their voices more.

Winter Sleep (Lee Junhoe of 2PM)
Two questions -
How many of these 2PM fools can rap?!?!
What is up with these 2PM boys having whack ass vocal production on their songs!?!?!
Junhoe's Winter Sleep sounds like he got Day6's Young K to write him a song and then pulled in some random producer to arrange it into an RnB track. While I am cross about the weird effects on Junhoe's voice (they contrast very Wrongly™ with the sample that sounds like a digital clock ticking), he sounds leagues better than Wooyoung did on two of the four songs I reviewed for in previous Review Roundups, so I'm not too mad.
I don't like this song. It's not a Trash Bomb like Wooyoung's Party Shots, but I wouldn't even download this for Shuffle Bait. The weird beeping contrasting with the vocal effects is one thing, but the entire song just sounds way too loud. None of the elements meld together in a pretty manner, and if I were Young K, I'd demand reparations for Junhoe doin' my song like this.

Radio 199.3 (SBGB)
SBGB decided to go left field with their acoustic midtempo, and the results are a very pleasing aural experience.
Radio 199.3 is your typical acoustic midtempo, but with some very creative chord choices to make the song stand out above all the other acoustic midtempos we've heard this month. I'm typical a sucker for these types of songs (and their RnB cousins), so even if SBGB didn't include the ear catching chord progressions, I'd still be a fan of this song.
This is a song for soft days. For rainy afternoons that make you wanna curl up in bed with someone special. Or those days when things are just kind of blue, and you wanna listen to something simple.

Thank You, Goodbye (BoA)
BoA, once again proving that she is indeed That Bitch™ (as in, That Bitch™ who loves to spread ha'self too thin), has released the the title track from her new Japanese album two days before she drops her new Korean album.
Because why scalp ya fandom once, when you can do it twice?!?! IN TWO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES!!
Thank You, Goodbye is a Japanese Ballad. If you've been a J-Pop fan for any period of time, you've decided if you like these types of songs or hate them (song quality notwithstanding). I happen to really like the way they sound, and I absolutely adore Thank You, Goodbye. BoA has a very shrill, nasal voice, so anytime she records a song like this, it's a risk that it could turn out Very Bad™. But the production in Thank You, Goodbye compliments BoA's voice well. And speaking of her voice, whomstever was on vocal production duties was on their A game, cause these arrangements are A1. You deserve a raise, babe!!
BoA's Thank You, Goodbye album is due for release in Japan on February 14, while Nega Dola is due for release in Korea on January 31.

Shall We Dance (SBGB)
Shall We Dance is a very different song than what I was expecting. I thought she was gonna be an upbeat acoustic number, but what I got was a melancholy piano driven midtempo.
I'm not upset, tho. On the contrary, I'm very content.
Shall We Dance sees SBGB sprinkling in unusual sonic choices (including an uptick in tempo at the end of the track) to make their acoustic midtempos pop just like in Radio 199.3. This is all tied together with the very bright (but restrained) soprano of their vocalist.
I like Shall We Dance more than I do Radio 199.3, simply because I like piano driven tracks more than acoustic guitar ones, but I don't see myself listening to it as much as Radio 199.3. Radio 199.3 is a song for a specific mood, but the mood of Shall We Dance is quite darker than the one in Radio 199.3, That's not something I really want in my space all the time. Still, this song makes my Musician Brain™ very happy.

Cherry On Top (10:45 from The Unit G)
Y'all, I was so so S O sure that Cherry On Top was gonna make the Fabulous Five for this week!! I don't know what name I'd put on songs with this kind of synth bass that also acts like a melodic element and a percussive one, but I fucking L O V E them. I loved it in SNSD's All Night (All Night should have been all the chorus bits, imo), and I loved it in the Cherry On Top preview.
But Cherry On Top is Como se dice... Not Good™.
Now, I listen to Cherry On Top like crazy, because I'm a fan of all of the different elements. But I listen to a lot of songs that I'd rate very poorly, because a) my taste in music is trash and b) I like fun music. If you're song isn't made well, but is a fun aural experience, I can excuse that.
I'm not gonna put you in a top faves list, because I have *some* integrity. But I mean...
The problem with Cherry On Top is that the verses and the choruses are too different, and the transition from the verse to the chorus is whack af. I mean, they *tried* (once), but it's still too jarring of a change. And I don't understand why they jumped right from the verse to the chorus after the rap in the second verse. That always throws me off. This bridge is also trash. It's literally just the prechorus, copy and pasted after the second refrain section. Blegh.

I'm not gonna lie, the first time I heard Always, I turned my tv off because I couldn't find my phone to change the video. I really had that visceral of a reaction to the song.
Always is every cutesy K-Pop song you've ever heard. And I usually love these kinds of songs; they're fun, even if they aren't the most imaginative thing in the world. But Always is just ridiculously saccharine. It's a little too much, sis. It did end of growing on me, but this is not a song I want in my face all the time.

I Wanna Become a Celeb (Celeb Five)
Whoever said trot music was boring has clearly never heard of Celeb 5.
Granted, I'm pretty sure this is a project group, because *I've* never heard of them before this song. Either way, I Wanna Become a Celeb is a really fun trot song that's perfect if you need something over the top to jam to.
The best part of I Wanna Become a Celeb is how it refuses to take itself seriously. There's a random ass break in the middle of the track where it totally changes vibes twice, and then goes back to the original. The vocals are done in a tongue in cheek manner. The entire thing is just a really fun mess, and I love everything about it.

The Perks Of Breaking Up (Cho Jung Chi featuring Fromm)
The Perks of Breaking Up is a sad song. But not too sad, if that makes sense.
The Perks of Breaking Up is a soft synthrock ballad. I really like the way it builds from a simple acoustic guitar all the way up to a rousing orchestration of guitars and synths. A song like this could have easily turn dreary and overly sad, but the arrangement and composition uplifts it. Yes, this is a song about a breakup, but it isn't the end of the world. Take what you need to be sad, and live. That's the feeling I get from this song. Tis nice.

Miss Younha, not content with the pile of wigs she procurred with last month's Hello and Parade, has blessed us with an Acoustic Coffee Shop RnB Midtempo in the form of Propose.
We love a benevolent queen, babies.
Propose, like I mentioned above, is an Acoustic Coffee Shop RnB Midtempo. Ms Younha's voice is complimented well by a soft guitar and electric keyboard, which are all laid over a soft n simple drum machine. A song like this is Shuffle Bait in the best of ways, imo. I'd put this on on my own accord, mind you, but this is the kind of song I'd look forward to playing if I put my phone on shuffle.

Always Find You (Kwon Yuri x RAIDEN)
I see Future Bass is the mood of #TwentyGayTeen. Not sure how I feel about that, but considering how much I like Always Find You (and how I can't wait for Seventeen to ruin my life with Thank You), I guess I don't mind.
The problem that I have with most Future Bass songs is that they lack any type of punch or originality. And I mean, most styles of EDM really do not have any room for originality, but Future Bass just seems to have this problem where producers and DJs just churn out the most generic sounding beats they can. Always Find You, thankfully, doesn't have that issue.
Always Find You has a breakdown that washes over you and makes you feel like you're floating. There's a depth of sound/feeling here that I don't get with most Future Bass tracks. Yuri isn't the best vocalist, but she does her best to stand head and shoulders above the instrumentation (and has a producer that wants those Big Man Monies™). There are also vocoded bits that serve as a hook interjected into the prechorus that make it pop, and it's just... *clenches fist* So Good!!
Always find you is a collaboration between Yuri and English based producer/DJ Raiden for SMSTATION. There is an English version that features on Protocol Records' Youtube channel that you can watch here.

Hometown (Ryan)
Ryan's Hometown sounds like someone decided to take acid, and turn the experience into a song. It's... I'm not quite sure if I like the way it turned out.
Hometown starts out nice and easy, folks. She's not gonna hurt you. Yet. Ryan creates a beautifully tranquil atmosphere with just his voice and a piano, but it doesn't stay that way for long. Hometown very quickly builds and crests into a drop that I would lovingly describe as Dissociation At It's Finest™.
Cause a bitch feels like she's flying!! YEEHAW, MOTHERFUCKERS!!
After the second verse is when Hometown takes a turn into Bad Trip™ land. This section takes the gentle and almost euphoric feeling of the first drop, and inverts them into something nightmareish. If you're not prepared for this section, it can scare the absolute shit outta you. I don't know why Ryan decided to add it, because the lazy bitch couldn't be fucked to properly transition out of it when he goes into the second prechorus. Either way, if you can get past how odd that shit is, Hometown is pretty great.

Beautiful Life (Six Bomb)
Six Bomb is a group that keeps cropping up out of nowhere and surprising my ass, and you'd think I'd be used to this shit by now. At least they left the gimmicky concepts at home, and decided to just deliver a nice song this time around.
Beautiful Life is really not much to write home around. It's just a really simple pop song, accented by a sax riff that honestly makes the song. If you're sick to the back of ya teef of sax riffs in your pop music, then skip to the next song, this one is not for you. But if you don't mind them, Beautiful Life is nice.

Baby Boo (High Soul featuring KissN and Mint)
You know that feeling when you stan a rookie from a small company that you aren't sure is gonna make it?!!?! That's me with High Soul. She showed up last year on a random episode of Music Core with a song I couldn't find a video for, and besides a few more sporadic daily music show appearances, I haven't heard from her since.
Baby Boo is a very cutesy swing song that I have to be in a cutesy mood to listen to. If the entire track was just KissN (except for Lime's rap break), I'd probably like this way more, but High Soul's nasally tone is a bit too much with the brightness of the instrumentation. I'm glad that she's still making music, but sis... This ain't the move.

Miss You (Jang Sooa)
Miss You is a very smooth and straight forward RnB song. This is the type of song I wanna play after listening to a song like CHASY's Memories:Snow, because it helps me anchor my soul back to reality.
Cause shit, a bitch really be visitin' four dimensions in the Higher Realm™ while listening to tracks like Memories:Snow.
Miss You is your typical Acoustic Coffee Shop RnB Midtempo to the T. But that's okay, sis!! We love those around these parts!! People these days are really scared to do shit that's considered ~typical~, but sometimes it's just best to stay in your lane. And that's what Ms Sooa does with Miss You.
Ms Sooa has a really pretty voice that compliments the instrumentation of Miss You very well. More intricate vocal production/arrangement would've been appreciated, tho. And mayhaps a rap break?!?! I feel like this needs a rap break. Nonetheless, a really nice song.

vague (Ha Un)
Vague is a song you'd hear playing in an upscale bar. Pleasantly funky, but in a manner you can ignore if you wanted to.
There's not really much for me to say about vague other than "I liked it, it was good". A song like this is a textbook Shuffle Bait track, sis. I like the funkiness of the guitars and bass, and the way Ha Un's voice sis on top of the track is Very Nice™, but everything from the arrangement to the chord progressions used here are things I've heard in other songs. And not only that, but used more creatively.
Vague isn't a bad song, it just isn't that creative. And honestly, while I did just say that sometimes it's better to just stay in your lane, sometimes you stay a little *too* far in your lane.

FLY (Heera featuring PDAY)
FLY is a song I was looking forward to, because the teasers gave me a nice instrumental. But sis... Heera's vocals were whack. They did the thing where they had the hook play out over silence, and... It wasn't cute. BUT!! I've been fooled by teasers before, so I figured I should hear FLY in full before condemning it.
My initial reaction was correct. This instrumentation is amazing, but Miss Heera's voice gets hella screechy. It's not pleasant. And while I like that this is an experimental electroRnB track that isn't too left field, I don't like it enough to purposefully play the song more than twice.

6 (Six) (MDSZ)
6 sounds like it should be the opener for a Shounen Jump anime. That extended intro at the beginning would lend itself very well to a Bleach or Black Cat type of show.
6 is a synth driven pop/punk track. I wasn't sure what to make of this song at first, but it grew on me. Like, a fuckin' weed. This type of track would be great to work out to. I mean, I don't really work out, but I'd assume the energy here would hype you up like you're the baddest bitch in that gym.
If I ever find myself in Korea, I'd love to hear this song live. The studio version packs quite the punch, but it feels a little restrained. And that's very common with songs like these, because mixing them requires you to EQ a lot of the different elements quite aggressively to get them to sound nice together in a recording. But still, live show. I wanna be there.

5. NIRVANA (Ravi)

Can someone please find me what that melody being played by the xylophone at the beginning of this song is from?!?!! It sounds so annoying familiar, but I can't place it and it's gonna drive me nuts.
Not as nuts as Ravi's Sik-k imitations, but close.
Nirvana starts out sounding very on trend for a K-HipHop song. I'm not gonna lie, I was debating if I should leave Nirvana off the list, because Ravi's intro was just... So Bad™. But since we're being better people in 2018, I decided to give the whole song a chance, and I was very surprised. The verse had me boppin' a lil, cause Ravi ditches the autotune and starts rapping like he means it.
But nothing could have prepared for the Rave Realness™ of the chorus, ladies.
The autotune is back with a vengeance, but it fits the Rave backdrop better, so I'm not mad. And I will admit (grudgingly), that the hook is catchy as fuck all. This combination, lowkey, reminds me of Azealia Banks' Ice Princess (the verse bits on Nirvana are more RnB than trap, but same concept). This kind of combo really shouldn't work, but the transition into the Rave sections from the verses is clean af.
Jimin's bits are a nice break from Ravi (he's learned to stop embellishing his voice, but he can still be annoying at times), but I feel like they could have utilized her more in the track. The brightness of her voice contrasts the depth of Ravi's, plus she elevates the Rave sections very nicely. But we literally hear her for 10 seconds twice and dassit, boo!!
For whatever reason, Nirvana gets mixed into one of the b-sides on Ravi's mixtape called Alcohol in the official video. You can listen to both tracks separately here.

4. Sunset Dream (Kriesha Chu)

Miss Kriesha Chu got bored with that Future Bass mess Hui (of Pentagon) gave her and decided to take a swipe at Ariana's ponytail. Turn up!!
Sunset Dream swaggerjacks Problem down to the horn riffs and trap breakdowns, sis. Fortunately, it does so in a way that improves upon the original, and isn't reductive. Kriesha Chu doesn't particularly care that we know she stole Problem out from underneath Ariana Grande's nose. She just wants us to know that she's a better dancer.
And has more stage presence, but let's not get *too shady*.
I don't really understand why Like Paradise was chosen to be the title track from Kriesha Chu's first glorified single album mini album when Sunset Dream was right there. This song makes Like Paradise look dusty af, and I'm salty as hell now. Either way, I'm glad she decided to perform it on MCD One Good Time™. 3. Memories:Snow (CHASY featuring Yeonhee)

If I ever lucked out and got cast in a movie, I'd want this song to play during the first makeout scene with my character's boyfriend. These types of really intense breakdowns are perfect for those types of scenes, sis.
CHASY's Memories:Snow is what I wanted from Ryan's Hometown - a straightforward EDM track to dissociate to. There are no surprise breakdowns or beat switches here, baby. Memories:Snow is 100% chillstep. And I fucking love it. These types of songs are great for bad days, because they either make me cry or feel like I'm floating.
Obviously, I like the floaty feel feels better, because that doesn't make physically exhausted, but sometimes a bitch just has to cry.

2. Glue (Planetarium Records)

Last we saw the boys of Planetarium Records, they were ruining my life with tropical flavored RnB. Glue sees them trading in the tropical synths and drum beats for more conventional, Gospel inspired RnB sounds and hip hop beats.
And to the utter surprise and shock of absolutely no one, I fucking loved it.
While Blah was a "winin' on the beach, dancin' by the sand castles" type of track that would make any misc. group of niggas party go crazy, Glue is slow n sultry. Glue is a "slow dancing with bae" type track. Glue is a "I'm gon' romance you if it's the L A S T thing I do" track. Glue is the type of song you sing to bae when you wanna get in dem guts (or have bae blunder yours #InclusivityInOurSexJams). Glue is a song of many moods, sis.

So like... Y'all just gon' snatch up Eric Nam like that!?!? Y'all really gon' steal my mans' song, and do it better than him!?!?!? I'm not mad (#SorryBae :3), I'm just curious, sis!!
On or Off is 90% a funky ass bassline, and y'all K N O W how I feel about Funk in my K-Pop!! It's also 90% Sammy rapping (and a lil singing), but I'm absolutely not mad at that, either. Nick comes in with his smooth n bright tenor just enough that it doesn't feel like On or Off is Sammy featuring Nick (in fact, I probably wouldn't like this song as much if it was just Sammy), so it's all good.
On or Off, like I mentioned above, is Funky af. Nick & Sammy have snatched their own little slice of the '90s with track, and it works so ridiculously well. On or Off is also lowkey af; this is a song you play when the party's winding down, sis. It's a lil hype, but you not trynna have nobody be buckwild.
Btw, am I just imagining things or does it sound like the na na na's were quoted from Will Smith's Gettin' Jiggy Wit It?!?!?! They didn't lift the actual audio from the song, but it sounds like they recorded their own version of that bit.

The 50 Best R&B Albums of The Decade (2010s) - Rated R&B
If there’s one genre that has experienced the most sweeping changes in the 2010s, it’s R&B.
From the survival of the EDM phenomenon to the decline in music sales to more artists taking the independent route, this decade seemed to prevent more challenges for established and emerging artists.
And let’s not forget about the ongoing debates about “the state of R&B” and critics declaring R&B a “dead genre” on more than occasion.
Still, with all the harsh talk about R&B, what remained consistent throughout this decade was the generous amount of extraordinary music from the artists we always adored to the ones we grew to love.
After many internal debates and sleepless nights, Rated R&B’s editorial team has compiled an unranked list of the 50 Best R&B Albums from the 2010s. The albums are listed in alphabetical order.
1. 4 — Beyoncé (2011)
Before the digital drop, before she got in formation, and before she renamed Coachella ‘Beychella,’ Beyoncé was laying the foundations of legendary status with 4. Riding high on the success of I Am… Sasha Fierce in the previous decade, Beyoncé took a much-needed hiatus from music to rediscover the world and herself. What came out of that year-long break, however, was the need to produce a timeless R&B record. “I really focused on songs being classics, songs that would last, songs that I could sing when I’m 40 and when I’m 60,” Beyoncé said in 2011.
With 4, Beyoncé grabbed pieces from all eras of music, from ‘80s and ‘90s R&B on tracks like “Party” and “I Care” to ‘70s funk and Afrobeat on songs like “End of Time” and “Run The World (Girls)”, to create a sound that was bolder than anything she had ever done. Released in 2011 with moderate initial success — reaching number one on the Billboard 200 chart and winning the Grammy award for Best Traditional R&B Performance at the 55th annual ceremony for “Love on Top”— 4 set the precedent for what was to come in the 2010s, while slowly being embraced as Beyoncé’s bravest, most soulful record to date. — ANDERS HARE (A.H.)
2. A Seat at the Table — Solange (2016)
To encapsulate a significant portion of what it means to be Black in America is a difficult task. Not many have been called to it, yet Solange willingly hit the nail with much accuracy on A Seat at the Table. Inviting the general public to her spread, she expressed the pain, anguish, resilience and pride one can feel on a daily basis. Solange covers as many necessary bases as possible including wanting a piece of something to call your own in a covetous space (“F.U.B.U.”) to establishing boundaries, while demanding respect (“Don’t Touch My Hair”). The glimmer of hope in the beautifully melancholy number arrives towards the end with “Junie,” inspired by Ohio Players member Junie Morrison. In a little under an hour, the multidisciplinary artist gives way to an intricate experience in a manner that is complex and poetic. — DANIELLE BRISSETT (D.B.)
3. Another Round — Jaheim (2010)
As the title suggests, Jaheim returned for Another Round of passion-fueled belts and beloved street poetry on his fifth album. Serving as the solid follow-up to The Makings of a Man, the 2011 Best R&B Album contender is essentially an album that conveys thoughtful lyrics and tender ballads and midtempos with familiar and fresh sounding instrumentals. For the pre-album single, “Finding Your Way Back,” Jaheim works hard to retrace his last steps to rekindle a favorable romance. He expresses excitement to be a first-time dad on “II Pink Lines.” On the piano-laced “Bed is Listening,” Jaheim asks his talkative lover to keep their relationship troubles and joys only between them. A deserving listen to Another Round is highly recommended. – ANTWANE FOLK (A.F.)
4. Anti — Rihanna (2016)
Barbadian-born singer Rihanna has long been described as “anti”— going against the grain in fashion, music and lifestyle choices, and doing everything an icon shouldn’t. While her first seven albums detail her narrative of a “good girl gone bad,” none of them really tell Rihanna’s true story. When in the early stages of her eighth studio album, Rihanna ensured she played a major role in its inception, serving as executive producer. She sought to create a timeless album with replay value she could perform years after its release. The final product was Anti, an album nearly four years in the making that truthfully recounted Rihanna as a human being better than any album she previously released. Sonically, the album is a soulful adventure of self-exploration and a footprint of the culmination of every sound in Rihanna’s catalog. Anti earned Rihanna five nominations at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, however, did not win a single one. This defeat is symbolized as a body of work that is ahead of its time. Still, Anti remains one of the most progressive, personal, and touching albums of the 2010s. — A.H.
5. Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? — K. Michelle (2014)
K. Michelle’s 2013 debut, Rebellious Soul, officially introduced her as one of the most unfiltered R&B storytellers, but her follow-up LP is the moment her undeniable talent couldn’t go unnoticed – even by her Love and Hip-Hop naysayers. That said, Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart has it all for a second album: a strengthen concept, sharper lyrics, and improved quality in production. Throughout AWBAH, K’s expressive vocals are equally as emotional as the love drama she belts. At the center of many of the complicated lyrics is acclaimed English actor Idris Elba, who she had an alleged fling with sometime before (or during) this album recording. K isn’t modest about the effect he’s had on her heart at the least on songs like “How Do You Know?” and “Maybe I Should Cry.” But, regardless of the heartache he caused K. Michelle, she mustered up enough strength to put out a body of work that doesn’t sound like anyone but herself. – A.F.
6. Art Official Age — Prince (2014)
Prince’s Art Official Age is a concept album that takes listeners on a futuristic journey. Prince is placed in a suspended animation and awakens 45 years in the future to a whole new world. British singer Lianne La Havas makes a few appearances on the album as she plays the role of a therapist who helps guides him back into consciousness and gives him an overview of what to expect. On Art Official Age, Prince showcases the highly influential funk-pop-rock-soul sound he innovated in the ‘80s. “Clouds” serves up the kind of bass-heavy, guitar-accented groove diehard Prince fans know and love. A celebration of affection and intimacy, this standout brilliantly decries the impersonal aspects of modern, technology-reliant communication and a lack of sincerity in human interaction in a world of “reality”-show posing.
“Breakfast Can Wait” is an ode to morning sex. Prince is in stellar form on “Breakdown,” a heartfelt lament of a relationship gone wrong. He puts his falsetto to great use over a stirring track that transitions multiple times between sparse, vocal-and-keyboard-only verses and a chorus with those elements effectively joined by drums and a gripping bass line. He closes the album with “Affirmation III,” where Havas helps spread encouragement with some words of wisdom. “Remember, there is really only one destination, and that place is you. 7. Back to Love — Anthony Hamilton (2011)
It’s hard to resist the raspy-voice charm of Anthony Hamilton. On Back to Love, the veteran continues to showcase his strong admiration for old-school soul music found on most of his previous albums. This time, rather than wallow in “the sad cat” persona, Hamilton puts his emotional outbursts in check and delivers the shimmering danceable number “Sucka For You” and the reassuring duet “Never Let Go” featuring Keri Hilson. Despite the bright lights, big city production influences, Hamilton isn’t out of touch with his Southern roots. On “Pray For Me,” the hit single, he gets on bended knees to plead with the Most High for his ex-lover to return to him. And like a home-cooked meal, richly flavored tracks “Best of Me” and “I’m Ready” are like food to the soul. — A.F.
8. Back to Me — Fantasia (2010)
Fantasia’s third studio album, Back to Me, was released four years after her self-titled sophomore LP. Taking a more daring direction with the previous project, Fantasia returned to her core elements with an elevated sound. The American Idol winner’s growth was evident on this album, from the lyrical material to the vocal performance. She collaborates with accomplished songwriter/producer duo Claude Kelly and Chuck Harmony for the first time on the initial single “Bittersweet” and the opening track, “I’m Doin’ Me.” Coming out swinging, track one sets the tone for what’s to come throughout the rest of the album. While the striking piano is a key piece, it’s Fantasia’s ad-libs and backgrounds that truly elevate and amplify the song’s magic. A few retro-leaning numbers (“Trust Him”, “Collard Greens & Cornbread”) make an appearance on the tracklist but Fantasia’s soulful grit produces a piercing comfort, connecting a seasoned energy to a contemporary feel. — D.B.
9. BEYONCÉ — Beyoncé (2013)
The world stopped momentarily when Beyoncé released her fifth studio album without any warning. Two years after 4, her eponymous album was in a league of its own from the rollout to its musical landscape. Fans got an authentic peek into Beyoncé’s personal life through the music for the first time; bringing us into her high profile marriage, motherhood and her views on success. Beyoncé experimented with a variety of different musical elements, including electronic and pop. It leaned towards an alternative R&B feel, straying from the traditional R&B sound that was prevalent in her previous body of work. Even though eccentricity flowed throughout the album, “Rocket” was R&B at its core. Honoring “Untitled (How Does It Feel) by D’Angelo, the soulfully funky slow jam oozes seduction as Beyoncé slides across the yearning electric guitar and thumping bass. The self-titled project contained an assortment of flavors that were unexpectedly satisfying in a way only Beyoncé can serve. — D.B.
10. Black Messiah — D’Angelo and The Vanguard (2014)
D’Angelo is a legend among men. As one of the pioneers of neo-soul, his weighted contribution to the movement would be inadequate without him. He made his long-awaited return to music 14 years after his sophomore album Voodoo with the politically-charged Black Messiah. It was slated for a 2015 release but he was inspired to push the date up due to the verdicts of the Eric Garner and Ferguson cases. Capturing the Black American experience during a tense time, D’Angelo and The Vanguard responded with an eccentric, yet spiritual album. Musically, Messiah is a rebellion from structural norms, with nearly inaudible lyrics that are intended to be felt and not necessarily understood word for word. Intertwining funk, soul, gospel and blues, there’s a wide range from societal issues (“1000 Deaths,” “The Charade”), to romance (“Really Love,” “Another Life”) and all the imaginable feelings in between. The intricately beautiful body of work rightfully earned the award for Best R&B Album at the 58th Grammy Awards. — D.B.
11. blackSUMMERS’night — Maxwell (2016)
“It’s an album about trying to find love,” Maxwell told Mic on the overall theme of blackSUMMERS’night. “It’s sonically grittier than usual and I’d say that this album is much more poetic.” Complied with well-written songs that weren’t crafted from any rushed recording sessions, this second album of a romantic trilogy covers a lot of ground on discovering true romance like on the splashing groove “Lake By the Ocean” and captive solo “Hostage.” In a vulnerable fashion, Maxwell opens his heart and mind to a hopeful lover on the mood-setting “Listen Hear.” His distinctive voice extracts intense pain on “Lost,” the darkest and finest moment. Now while blackSUMMERS’night doesn’t entirely follow the bluesy formula of BLACKsummers’night, his commercial breakthrough, it’s most definitely an R&B collector’s item. – A.F.
12. Calling All Lovers — Tamar Braxton (2015)
There’s something to be said for not trying to reinvent the wheel. Despite a strong sophomore album and a hit single (“Love and War”), Tamar Braxton didn’t go after the charts for her third studio LP. Instead, the R&B star upped the ante on Calling All Lovers by delivering fervent vocals to yearn downhearted and joyous love tunes like the vintage-soul ditty “Simple Things” and summery throwback “Must Be Good to You.” Braxton is at her best when she sharply focuses on her vocal powers, as she does on the sorrowful “Broken Record” and the eminently romantic “Raise the Bar.” So while Calling All Lovers is written off by many as a disappointing follow-up because it didn’t receive a proper commercial rollout as its parent album, it is an incomparable gem that’s proved a hit after one fair spin. – A.F.
13. Caution — Mariah Carey (2018)
A music legend cannot release an album without high expectations from fans and critics. Throughout her career, Mariah Carey has always set and exceeded the bar of musical excellence with her impeccable vocal range and her mesmerizing lyrics. Caution, Carey’s 15th studio album, proved why she has been able to sell over 200 million records throughout her career. Whether she’s singing tender ballads like “With You” and “Portrait” or showing off her playful side on “A No No” and “GTFO,” Caution pleasantly reminds the world that there are levels to Carey’s talent. — K.S.
14. Ctrl — SZA (2017)
The first lady of Top Dawg Entertainment crafted a playbook on self-awareness, boldness and reflection on Ctrl. SZA, along with her mom and granny, narrates the ebbs of flows of self-discovery in numerous aspects. Along the interestingly insightful journey, the alt & B singer stops at sensuality (“Doves In The Wind”), insecurity (“Drew Barrymore”) and acceptance (“Normal Girl”) with an ever-changing destination in sight. She takes flight on “Pretty Little Birds” featuring label-mate Isaiah Rashad. The lucid lyrics about soaring high with her lover are stretched across palpitating production with fluttering jazz horns and synths. SZA quaintly captures the nuances of growth in a way that was widely and immensely felt upon her release. Her full-length debut is a comforting coming of age album for young women in their 20-somethings, stepping into their own. — D.B.
15. Doubleback: Evolution of R&B — Joe (2013)
It doesn’t get more soulful than Joe. The Grammy-nominated veteran, who debuted in 1993 with the album Everything, effortlessly proves that he’s untouchable in the romance department. By merging elements of well-rendered vocals, convincingly tender lyrics, and classic and modern R&B feels, Doubleback: Evolution of R&B is a stroke of pure genius. Never sounding too dated, Joe reaches back to give his male listeners lessons on the beauty of settling down like on “I’d Rather Have a Love,” the yearning lead single. He breaks down the pleasurable difference between “Love & Sex” with Fantasia and indulges in the sweet company of “Mary Jane.” Doubleback is another reminder to bachelors that there’s nothing wrong with turning in your player cards, once and for all. – A.F.
16. Ego Death — The Internet (2015)
The Internet’s third studio album was a wake-up call to anyone who slept on the eclectically soulful band. While their sophomore effort floated in the lo-fi realm, Ego Death took the tempo up a notch. Building on their neo-soul adjacent sound, they pulled from alternative, jazz and lounge music elements to create a body of work that is expansive, yet focused. A common thread for Ego Death is the relaxing, easygoing tone, appropriately displayed in “For The World” featuring James Fauntleroy — a track that shares a similar groove to “Butterflies” by Michael Jackson. The Internet’s melodic palate transformed from a mystic vibe to a soul knocking sound on their third album; proof they’ve grown from being the adolescent band next door to a musically inclined group who’s pushing their sound further. — D.B.
17. ELDORADO — Ro James (2016)
Ro James summons an authentic essence of soul. With a husky and smoldering timbre, his ability to bridge the musicality of his forefathers and his personal influences enhance the listening experience. James pulls from rock, soul and gospel to create a rich and fortifying sound. His trilogy EP Coke, Jack and Cadillacs was released in 2013, simmering a carefully crafted energy that steadily lured fans in.
Three years later, his debut album ELDORADO solidified a lane solely reserved for James to cruise along. His Willie Hutch-sampled track “Permission” took over urban adult contemporary radio and promptly aided his growing success. ELDORADO would be incomplete without hazy and seductive tracks like “Burn Slow” and “GA$” but “Holy Water” contributes a contrasting but necessary element. Swelled with sonorous organs, James belts about becoming better and not losing himself with choir-adjacent backgrounds for full support. For his first major-label release, James leaves an undeniably lasting impression. — D.B.
18. Feel The Real — Musiq Soulchild (2017)
When it comes to love, Musiq Soulchild has a lot to say. Released as a double album, Feel The Real is a 100-minute expedition through the different stages of a relationship. “I kinda wanted to do the whole Feel the Real thing because this love thing, this romance thing, this relationship thing, this interpersonal intimate thing we deal with it’s all about how you feel,” he told HipHollywood. “You can’t think your way through it.” The title track, which features Marsha Ambrosius, hears Soulchild shooting his shot at a woman he is interested in pursuing.
On the same token, he isn’t looking to settle too quickly. He gets very candid on “Benefits,” where he only wants to be friends with benefits. He admits his wrongdoings on the Willie Hyn-assisted “My Bad” and asks his partner to do the same on “Humble Pie.” “Let Go” is about knowing when it is time for both partners to move on from a relationship. With everything he experienced in his previous relationship, Soulchild wants to make sure he is ready to make his heart open for the next person. “Test Drive” is about testing the waters before settling down. “We could both crash and burn or we could fly high / Couldn’t hurt to take a test drive,” he sings. Soulchild expresses his gratitude on the album’s closer “Simple Things.” Although the album is a lot longer than traditional releases, Soulchild makes the experience enjoyable with his velvety vocals laced over live instrumentation. — K.S.
19. Freudian — Daniel Caesar (2017)
The early 2010s consisted of R&B artists trying to keep up with what was contemporary, with many gravitating toward pop, alternative and EDM. On the contrary, Ontario-born singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar spent much of the early 2010s being recognized as a budding voice in classic R&B stylings with the release of several scattered EPs such as 2014’s Praise Break and 2015’s Pilgrim’s Paradise. However, Caesar’s debut album Freudian became a constant revisit for casual listeners of the genre after its release in 2017. The obvious nods to gospel music on tracks such as “Hold Me Down” and “We Find Love” adds a natural anointing to Caesar’s smooth sound. However, it is songs such as “Blessed” and the H.E.R.-assisted “Best Part” that elevate Caesar to timeless status, as both became radio and wedding mainstays, respectively. While everyone else was making moody, aesthetically-pleasing sounds, Caesar created a timeless record that offered a little something for everyone.— A.H.
20. Greater Than One — Dwele (2012)
Dwele is arguably one of the most underrated neo-soul singers. The Detroit native’s fifth studio album, Greater Than One, is proof in the pudding. Drawing inspiration from ‘80s R&B, Greater Than One highlights various topics surrounding a relationship. From missing out on love (“Going Leaving”) to knowing how to keep his woman happy (“What Profit”) to avoiding temptation (“Frankly My Dear”), the subject matter is relatable for anyone who has ever experienced a relationship. A standout moment on the album is the eargasmic “Obey,” an alluring tune where Dwele takes complete control in the bedroom as he instructs his woman to submit to his orders. Looking back, Dwele stepped outside of his traditional sound for Greater Than One, all while staying true to his artistry. — K.S.
21. Gumbo — PJ Morton (2017)
There is no place like home. PJ Morton returned to his New Orleans roots for his fourth studio album, Gumbo. With just nine tracks, the introspective LP is seasoned with intense topics that are most personal to him. On “Claustrophobic” featuring Pell, Morton vents about his frustrations in the music industry, making it clear that he is not interested in chasing trends. He offers hope to the marginalized on “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” featuring BJ the Chicago Kid and The HamilTones. “Religion” hears Morton calling out people who use religion to justify their bad behavior, singing, “But you blame your God when it’s your own fault / Where is the love that your God spoke of?” He celebrates lifelong love on “First Began,” which was nominated for Best R&B Song at the 2018 Grammy Awards. 22. H.E.R. — H.E.R. (2017)
Before she was the ominous, multitalented music virtuoso known as H.E.R., California native Gabi Wilson first appeared on a radio talent competition Next Big Thing in 2009, ultimately losing. However, it was not until she put on a pair of massive sunglasses to cover her face, changed her name to the acronym Having Everything Revealed, and released an eponymous debut EP that H.E.R. became a slow-burning sensation everyone wanted to know. A compilation of her first two EPs released in 2016 and 2017, respectively, H.E.R. is the diamond that emerged from the coal that came with the introduction of alternative R&B in the mid-2010s: a purely R&B album that is true to its roots, yet can easily compete with the fiercest competitors. H.E.R. received several nods from critics and contemporaries alike, including a co-sign of the album’s second single “Focus” from Rihanna.
With just one feature on the entire project, H.E.R. puts her messages of love, regret, pain, and pleasure at the forefront of the album on songs such as “Rather Be,” “2,” and “Losing.” Although not a radio-heavy project, the resonance of H.E.R. made it all the way to the Grammy stage, earning the singer-songwriter Best R&B Album, and Best R&B Performance for her duet “Best Part” with Daniel Caesar. While she still has yet to put out a proper debut LP, H.E.R. remains a staple of the 2010s as the world waits to see what she will do next. — A.H.
23. Honestly — Lalah Hathaway (2018)
Lalah Hathaway’s first studio album on her independent imprint followed her pair of Grammys won for her 2015 live album. All-around musician Tiffany Gouché is involved with each song on Honestly, pushing Hathaway into a more free-spirited and adventurous territory sonically than her previous albums. Fortunately, this bold play works to the polyphonic-voiced singer’s advantage. Everything from Honestly is a mood. “I Can’t Wait” beams with feel-good vibes to get any party started. The Lecrae-assisted anthem “Don’t Give Up” is a large dose of reassurance, while “Won’t Let Go” ducks and dodges an obsessed ex. And while her rich, warm overtones are attached to nostalgic video game noise, it doesn’t seem scattered or muddled. It’s actually a positive step in the next direction of Hathaway’s elevated artistry. – A.F.
24. In My Mind — BJ the Chicago Kid (2016)
With the many directions R&B has taken, only a few have been able to elevate the genre while staying true to its core elements. When BJ the Chicago Kid independently released his debut album Pineapple Now-Laters in 2012, he garnered attention with his soulfully robust voice, suggestive of prominent hometown soul singers like Sam Cooke and Curtis Mayfield. Six months later, he signed a deal with the famed Motown Records where he released his major-label debut, In My Mind.
By injecting the quintessence of his forefathers into his resonating sound, BJ evidently distinguished himself from his peers. He makes use of his storytelling skills on a tale of infidelity on “Wait Til the Morning” featuring Isa. On the sensual track “The Resume” featuring Big K.R.I.T., BJ channels the computerized ’90s energy by way of Jodeci. He closes the album with “Turnin’ Me Up,” a soothing and irresistible acoustic number with the impromptu spirit of a jam session. BJ presents a modern take on soul music with In My Mind, while keeping the spirit of the music form alive. — D.B.
25. Kaleidoscope Dream — Miguel (2012)
Miguel had a lot to prove with his sophomore album, Kaleidoscope Dream. His debut All I Want Is You was the spacey and rhythmic introduction to his genre-melding talents, yet it wasn’t well-received upon its release. Taking significant creative control this time, Miguel returned to the drawing board to create an imaginative fusion of psychedelic soul, rock and R&B. The album begins with “Adorn,” the feel-good throwback-adjacent single that matured into a classic over time. As the ear-bending journey continues, the title track is more than fitting of its name, navigating a chromatically rippling number that’ll take listeners to another plane. The daringly neoteric direction Miguel took resulted in him becoming a regarded voice among male R&B. — D.B.
26. Late Nights & Early Mornings — Marsha Ambrosius (2011)
As half of the neo-soul duo Floetry, Marsha Ambrosius is one of the pillars that fused rap, soul, and jazz to create the genre nearly 20 years ago. It was these elements and a sultry, operatic voice that are the driving force behind her debut solo album Late Nights & Early Mornings. However, pushing the envelope even further, Ambrosius brought her unique form of storytelling into a new era and rewrote the book of grown and sexy for a new decade. She included clever scenarios in songs like “I Hope She Cheats On You (With a Basketball Player)” and “Far Away,” a tearjerking narrative that you feel just as hard as the sensual slow jams. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, and “Far Away” earned two Grammy nominations at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards in 2012. Late Nights & Early Mornings became less of a single project for one moment in time, but a mood for the right time of night, anytime. Whether those listening were feeling kinky, sad or just lying awake thinking about life, Ambrosius’ pen was there to get them through it. — A.H.
27. Love Life — Tamia (2015)
It’s hard to believe Tamia recorded her very solid sixth studio album, Love Life, in just 10 days. Taking an edgier approach than her previous works, Love Life is grown and sexy at its finest. “It’s not as deep and dark as some of my past albums; it’s in a better place,” she said in a past interview. The Canadian singer worked with a diverse group of songwriters and producers including The-Dream, Tricky Stewart, Pop & Oak, Chuck Harmony, Claude Kelly, Polow Da Don and The Stereotypes. The romantic album highlights the best moments of being in love — and could even serve as a guide on how to add a little spice to a longterm relationship. Tamia describes the feeling of falling in love with the opener “Love Falls Over Me.” On the album’s lead single “Sandwich and a Soda,” she gets submissive as she sings about taking care of her man in and outside of the bedroom. Speaking of the bedroom, Tamia doesn’t hold back on songs about making love (“Chaise Lounge,” “Lipstick” and “No Lie”). The album’s standout track is definitely “Stuck With Me,” which peaked at No. 14 on Billboard’s US Adult R&B Songs chart. Love Life is another example of how an artist can be intimate while leaving something to the imagination. — K.S.
28. Love, Marriage & Divorce — Toni Braxton and Babyface (2014)
Toni Braxton and Babyface’s Grammy-winning joint album Love, Marriage & Divorce is a quite satisfying collection of gorgeous selections that profile the romantic confessions of their lives. Working closely alongside heavyweight musician Daryl Simmons and Antonio Dixon, the two R&B greats cover past, present, and future love stories and share important experiences to provide healing for one’s relationship and heart. Passionately-sung numbers like “Where Did We Go Wrong?” minister on the power of listening, while “Reunited” supports mutual reconciliation. Other standouts include the remorse hit “Hurt You,” the love-drenched makeup tune “Sweat” and “I’d Rather Be Broke,” the bittersweet solo by Braxton. Needless to say, Braxton and Edmonds are a fine duo, and it’s a serious crime when they’re apart for too long. – A.F.

29. New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh — Erykah Badu (2010)
Two years after releasing New Amerykah, Pt. 1 (4th World War), Erykah Badu followed up with the album’s sequel, New Amerykah, Pt. 2 (Return of the Ankh). While part one centered around politically-charged topics, part two is more personal as Badu focused more on her love life. Sonically, the album pulls inspiration from Badu’s early works like Baduizm. “The album is more emotional and flowy and talks about feelings,” Badu explained at a listening party in 2010. The obvious standout is her liberating single “Window Seat.” The controversial video, which shows Badu walking around nude in Dealy Plaza, ultimately led to her getting charged for disorderly conduct. Other highlights on the album include the funk-infused “Turn Me Away (Get Munny),” the cautionary “Fall in Love (Your Funeral)” and the buttery “Umm Hmm.” — K.S.
30. No Boys Allowed — Keri Hilson (2011)
Some fans and critics had to learn not to judge an album by its title when Keri Hilson announced her sophomore effort, No Boys Allowed. She explained the meaning behind the album in a press release, “It’s not about excluding men. It’s more about women understanding that there comes a time in your life when you want a man. A real man. A grown up. Not a boy. And that’s not a bad thing.” While Hilson’s debut album In A Perfect World was more on the safe side, No Boys Allowed saw the singer-songwriter more confident and open. Kicking off the album with her J.Cole-assisted banger “Buyou,” Hilson made is clear that she wasn’t about the shits. “You want a ride or die chick, baby / But you ain’t got a whip, baby / It ain’t gon’ happen / You don’t got shit, you need a walk or die chick, baby,” she sings in the second verse. After setting the record straight, she showed love to the ladies with her empowering anthem “Pretty Girl Rock,” which was co-penned by Ne-Yo.
Some of the best moments on the album are Hilson’s most vulnerable tracks. “Breaking Point” is about being fed up with a lover’s shenanigans. The bittersweet “Beautiful Mistake” is about regretting a past relationship. The John Legend-penned “All the Boys” hears Hilson reminiscing about relationships from her teenage years. At the time, she thought she was in love but later realized what true love is. “After all the boys that I thought I loved before I didn’t know what love was / Til you knocked on my door,” she sings. Hilson balances the emotional feels with flirty numbers like “The Way You Love Me” featuring Rick Ross, “Gimmie What I Want,” and the reggae-tinged “Bahm Bahm.” No Boys Allowed is a nearly flawless genre-blending album that can be played from start to finish without skipping a track. The hidden interludes make the listening experience even more enjoyable — even during some of the darkest moments on the album. — K.S.
31. Now or Never — Tank (2010)
Three years after releasing his Grammy-nominated album Sex, Love & Pain, Tank returned with more bedroom vibes on Now or Never. It was his first album to release under Atlantic Records, following his departure from Blackground Records where he released his first three albums. Now or Never is a coherent body of work that is filled with tender R&B tunes. With enticing titles like “Sex Music,” “Scream” and the Chris Brown-assisted “Foreplay,” the R&B General was on a mission to please his listeners in every way. Sonically, Now or Never is a lot lighter than its predecessor, which was done intentionally. “It’s a happier album, I’m appreciating more, I’m celebrating more,” he told The Boombox. Speaking of “Celebration,” his Drake-assisted track is among the standout tunes on the LP. “Emergency” is probably the most recognized song on the album. Borrowing the same melody as Pleasure P’s “Under,” which he also co-wrote and co-produced, “Emergency” sees Tank coming to the rescue to satisfy a woman’s needs in the bedroom. “When I got there, put her on the floor / She leakin’ but she still breathin’,” he sings. While Tank ended up releasing six albums this decade, Now or Never remains a staple in his discography. — K.S.
32. Passion, Pain & Pleasure — Trey Songz (2010)
By the end of the 2000s, Virginia native Trey Songz was a full-fledged R&B sex symbol. On his fourth studio album, Passion, Pain, & Pleasure, Songz builds on the slow jam catalog he’s become notorious for. Moreover, he expands his seductive pallet to include more than just sex, but more mature emotions like lust on songs like “Can’t Be Friends,” a rarity in the genre at the time. Also, the album spawned hits such as the Nicki Minaj-assisted “Bottoms Up,” which is certified four times platinum in the United States and reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his highest-charting song to date. Outside of being a great album, Passion, Pain, & Pleasure was one of the only albums that remain consistently R&B through and through. While his contemporaries were switching it up to keep up with the times, Songz carried the genre into the next decade by starting off strong. Not only that, he inspired several future baby-making hitmakers in the genre. Passion, Pain, & Pleasure earned Songz several nods, including Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist at the 39th Annual American Music Awards, and will forever be remembered as the album that paved the way for R&B in the 2010s. — A.H.
33. Perfectly Imperfect — Elle Varner (2012)
As the daughter of two published songwriters, it is no surprise why Elle Varner has a knack for storytelling. Her debut album Perfectly Imperfect via RCA Records is a compilation of relatable stories centered around love and self-acceptance. Varner worked closely with production duo Pop&Oak and her father Jimmy to craft one of the most noteworthy debut R&B albums this decade. Although her Grammy-nominated single “Refill” gets all the attention, there are quite a few gems on the album. With a sample from Kool & The Gang’s “Little Children,” “I Don’t Care” finds Varner going “into the deep end” with a guy and having no regrets about it. Over a funky bass, she tells her lover what she can bring to the table on “Leaf.” The closing track, “So Fly,” is probably one of the most important songs on the album. The uplifting tune is about accepting yourself — flaws and all. “So, I decided I’m the definition of fly / And if you want to know why / I know what money can’t buy,” she sings. — K.S.
34. Pieces of Me — Ledisi (2011)
First and foremost – Ledisi is one of the best R&B/soul vocalists of the last 20 years. The New Orleans native has made a name for herself as an artist who renders lovely, traditional R&B-styled compositions with thrilling jazz crescendos. For her third major-label outing and fifth overall, Ledisi doesn’t miss a chance to continue enticing R&B fans with more sensational vocal takes. Pieces of Me satisfies those deeply in love on joyous tunes like the tender “I Gotta Get to You” and everlasting ode “Stay Together” featuring Jaheim. Like the winning titular track, this remarkable set gives Ledisi a platform to be delightfully inspirational on empowering jams like the bluesy “BGTY” and the self-advocating anthem “Raise Up.” – A.F.
35. Raymond v. Raymond — Usher (2010)
Usher was undoubtedly a bonafide superstar in the 2000s. However, all of that changed with his marriage to Tameka Foster in 2007, and the Atlanta-native began to focus on themes of love and marriage. This caused a dip in sales for 2008’s Here I Stand, an album almost entirely inspired by his marriage to Foster. When the two unexpectedly divorced in 2009, it inspired Usher to create an album based on the situation as well as where he expected to go from there. Thus, Raymond v. Raymond was born. Seen as sort of a return to the sensual, yet pain-stricken Confessions of 2004, Raymond v. Raymond features some of Usher’s finest uptempo hits of the decade, including “OMG,” “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” and “Lil Freak.”
However, Usher’s sixth album saw him utilize the emerging sound of EDM for songs such as “DJ Got Us Falling In Love” and “Somebody to Love.” This new-found sound extended into Usher’s hit love song “There Goes By Baby,” a wedding song for the ages. Raymond v. Raymond won Usher two Grammy Awards in 2011, including Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. An album with features from Nicki Minaj, JAY-Z, will.i.am, and more, Raymond v. Raymond is Usher’s return to form for a new generation of R&B fans to discover. — A.H.
36. Reality Show — Jazmine Sullivan (2015)
When Jazmine Sullivan cleaned out her music industry cubicle in early 2011 to discover her true purpose in life, she left the world in complete shock. But, after nearly five years, the Philadelphia native had music admirers tuned into Reality Show, her third album. Ordering 12 songs, featuring studio input from the likes of SaLaAM ReMi, Key Wane, and Chuck Harmony, this phenomenal LP plays out overtly personal situations associated that are often a common narrative of many young Black women.
As a songsmith, with a knack for vivid imagery, Sullivan loads Reality Show with originals that seamlessly exalt her contemporary spirit like the trapsoul “Brand New” and down-chick anthem “#Hoodlove.” Some cuts sound like old favorites like the After 7-inspired hit “Let It Burn” and “Forever Don’t Last.” Other attention-holders stand in a league of their own like the introspective art “Masterpiece (Mona Lisa).” At the end of the day, Reality Show finds Sullivan singing with new conviction and versatility that makes her triumphant return to music more notable than other R&B comebacks. – A.F.
37. Souled Out — Jhené Aiko (2014)
Being off-brand isn’t Jhené Aiko’s motive. Resurfacing on the scene with her 2011 mixtape Sailing Soul(s), she introduced her newly-crafted sound that was more authentic to her artistry than her earlier work. Garnering recognition with her Sail Out EP in 2013, the debut album Souled Out concluded her motif. Aiko has remained steady on her music journey, refusing to let the industry steer her off course. Against an ambiently rhythmic background, her soothing voice lulls the sting of her realer-than-life lyrics. Aiko pulls from personal experiences and sets them in her songs, mirroring her reality with yours. With “Lyin King,” Aiko floats across the aquatic-like synths with a conviction that her lover will never know when a good thing is in his face. Souled Out is littered with philosophical gems, while providing a guide through the commensurating stages of heartbreak and enlightenment. — D.B.
38. Still Standing — Monica (2010)
The title says it all. Monica was Still Standing after a 15-year career of ups and downs. In the seasoned vocalist’s first album in four years, Monica capitalizes on the strength of her sincere duet with Keyshia Cole (“Trust”) and makes a triumphant return with age-appropriate uptempo and downtempo R&B tunes. The iron-solid hit “Everything to Me,” which marks her first-ever solo Grammy nod, takes its cue from Deniece Williams’ soulful single “Silly.” Monica keeps on the nostalgic path on “If You Were My Man,” while she lays her head on the chest of “Superman,” a soulful ode to her the man in the red cap. Other solid selections include the in-need banger “Here I Am” and the sappy ballad “Love All Over Me.” While Monica reflects mostly on love, she masterfully fuses songs about perseverance and self-importance on cuts like “Mirror,” “Believing in Me” and the survival title track. – A.F.
39. SweetSexySavage — Kehlani (2017)
There is a captivating nature about Kehlani. It could be her transparency, her charm or her confidence but all those aspects and more attribute to her debut LP SweetSexySavage. The Bay Area native signed a partnership with Atlantic Records, following the success of her 2015 mixtape, You Should Be Here. Her follow-up presented a refined body of work that remained honest to Kehlani’s discography. Tracks like “Too Much” and “Personal” lift melodies and song structures from the ‘90s and early 2000s without relying on obvious samples. She beams on “Piece of Mind”; her flawless harmonies perfectly compliment the consonantly layered production, reaching peak vocals by the 2:42 mark. Kehlani exhibits a vibrant synergy of her inspirations with her artistry on her debut, successfully providing songs for the sweet, sexy and savage sides in all of us. — D.B.
40. The Electric Lady — Janelle Monáe (2013)
Janelle Monae’s imagination is aptly cinematic. From her debut EP Metropolis: The Chase Suite, Monae showcased her well-rounded vision by introducing the story of her alter-ego, android Cindi Mayweather. As the prequel to The ArchAndroid, the afro-futuristic dystopian tale of The Electric Lady directs with a livelier soundtrack. Pulling inspiration from the early eras of soul music on tracks like “Dance Apocalyptic,” Monae shows she is a true student of those who came before her. She creates a sonic time chamber of sorts and lingers in the ‘70s on “It’s Code” and “Can’t Live Without You,” which takes a page out of Stevie Wonder’s book. Skillfully bridging the past, present and future of R&B, Monae brings Prince, Solange and Erykah Badu along as co-pilots for the electrifying ride to the world of Metropolis. — D.B.
41. The Lady Killer — CeeLo Green (2010)
CeeLo Green had the world shouting “Fuck You” at the start of the decade. The tell-off anthem was the lead single to his third solo album, The Lady Killer, and earned Green a Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2012. Sure, we can talk about how a song about a failed relationship with a gold digger was one of the biggest records at the time, but there is much more to be said about The Lady Killer. Best known as a member of the hip hop group Goodie Mob, Green steered clear from rapping this time around on his soul-infused project. “I thought The Lady Killer sounded edgy and elegant at the same time. So I wanted something like James Bond, but like Barry White would do it,” he told Billboard in an interview. Green introduces his “Lady Killer” persona on the opening track, before living his best life on the catchy “Bright Lights Bigger City,” which has a looping bassline similar to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” Green keeps his listeners engaged with his dynamic vocal performance throughout the rest of the album. Some of his best vocal moments can be heard on “Love Gun” featuring Lauren Bennett, “Fool for You” featuring Earth Wind & Fire’s Philip Bailey and the classic Motown-tinged “Old Fashion.” — K.S.
42. The Light of the Sun — Jill Scott (2011)
After laying down the bricks of neo-soul with her epic The Real Thing: Words and Sounds trilogy in the 2000s, Philadelphia native Jill Scott ventured into acting, making her cinematic debut in the films Hounddog and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? in 2007. Scott released The Light of the Sun, a dramatic sonic change from her previous work. As Scott’s first three albums dealt with self-discovery and maturation through mellow grooves and heavy jazz influence, The Light of the Sun had a brighter sound than anything Scott had ever released. Having given birth to her son Jett in 2009, the album reflected Scott’s happiness at the time as she celebrated life and love on songs such as “Blessed” and “So In Love” featuring Anthony Hamilton as well as her proudful womanhood on tracks such as “Womanmanifesto.” The Light of the Sun debuted atop the Billboard 200 and Top Hip-Hop/R&B Albums charts and earned Scott two Soul Train awards for Best Female Artist and Best R&B/Soul Album. Scott’s fourth album represents her transition from a young woman trying to find her way to a grown woman who knows exactly what she needs. — A.H.
43. The London Sessions — Mary J. Blige (2014)
As the only accomplished force in mainstream music to take home Grammys in four different genres, Mary J. Blige has earned the right to experiment with new sounds and depart from the musical style she’s responsible for pioneering. For her 12th studio effort, The London Sessions, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul left the states and jetted across the pond to draw recording inspiration from the UK’s brightest stars, including Sam Smith, Disclosure, and Emeli Sandé. The deep house tracks “Nobody But You” and “My Loving” thrive on blissful lyrical material. Meanwhile, The London Sessions features acoustic, therapeutic ballads (“Not Loving You,” “Therapy”) that speak for themselves. Overall, this noteworthy disc sends an important wake-up call to the music industry: Mary J. Blige isn’t afraid of change if it means she doesn’t have to be boxed in. – A.F.
44. The Love and War MasterPeace — Raheem DeVaughn (2010)
There comes a time when an artist wants to create a body of music to help heal the world. For Raheem DeVaughn, the time came for his third studio album, The Love and War MasterPeace. “I named the album The Love and War MasterPeace because I feel that where I am as a person and where we are as a people, we are all trying to master that internal peace and happiness in a very strange time,” DeVaughn said in a past press statement.
Pulling inspiration from fellow Washington, D.C. native Marvin Gaye’s critically-acclaimed album What’s Going On, The Love and War MasterPeace tackles issues affecting our society. Gaye’s influence can clearly be heard on the album’s lead single “Bulletproof” featuring Ludacris, which is a call to action for everyone to open their eyes on what’s really happening in the world around them. “You betta’ pray to the most high or whoever you praise / ‘Cause politicians can’t help you, they puppets to slaves,” warns DeVaughn. He empowers women on songs like “The Greatness” featuring Wale and reminds them of their worth on “Black & Blue,” which brings awareness to domestic violence. It wouldn’t be a Raheem DeVaughn album without his babymaking music. He brings the seductive vibes on velvety tunes like “Fragile” featuring Malik Yusef, “B.O.B,” “Microphone” and “Garden of Love.” — K.S.
45. The MF Life — Melanie Fiona (2012)
Melanie Fiona cemented herself as a retro-soul singer with her debut album, The Bridge. The sound of her Grammy-nominated single “It Kills Me” would serve as the blueprint for her next album, The MF Life. Released on Universal Records, The MF Life explored the highs and lows of love. With an emphasis on low moments, the 14-track offering is filled with punch-you-in-the-gut emotion and vivid storytelling. “I wanted it to be a collection of music and songs that make people think about the things that we actually go through and feel,” Fiona told NPR. Heartbreak and sorrow are reoccurring themes on The MF Life. “Wrong Side of a Love Song” is Fiona’s desperate attempt to get her man back after he broke up with her. “This is what it feels to be the one that’s standing left behind,” she sings.
Fiona also deals with loss on the album. “Gone (La Dada Di)” featuring Snoop Dogg is probably the most depressing song on the set. The Soundz-produced cut finds Fiona trying to process the death of her lover and regretting the argument they had. “Guess I’m thinking bout the last conversation we had / And the mean things that we’ve said / Wishing I could take the whole thing back / As I’m standing at his doorway, covered in red,” she sings. Fiona’s raspy vocals shine on records like “Bones” and “Running.” There are some lighter moments on the album such as the uplifting tunes “Change the Record” featuring B.o.B and “Watch Me Work.” The MF Life is a testament that our lives are not perfect and we will all go through some painful and traumatic experiences at some point. 46. Three Kings — TGT (2013)
At a time where male singing groups were scarce, Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank filled a necessary void. Following in the steps of their predecessors LSG (Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill), the solo R&B singers who are actual friends formed their supergroup TGT and released their only album Three Kings in 2013. They include all of the quintessential R&B album checkpoints: a song with a rap feature (“No Fun”), a few ballads and slow jams (“I Need,” “Lessons In Love”) with a few interludes in between. Among the tracks, “Burn Out” is the standout sleeper from their debut. Each gentleman performs ostentatiously on the intricate production that consists of multiple sonic and vocal peaks. The finished product creates an aural rush that’ll drive listeners into melodic bliss. Their distinct voices combined created harmonies that offered a unique texture and technique that has been absent from current R&B music. The trio’s undeniable formula lead them to a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album in 2014. — D.B.
47. Two Eleven — Brandy (2012)
Four years in the making, Brandy’s sixth album is her blood, sweat and tears. Drawing ultrasonic magic from familiar names like Sean “The Pen” Garrett, Bangladesh, Frank Ocean, Rico Love, and Mike WiLL Made-It, Two Eleven is an almost hour-long masterpiece that is home to singular vocal runs, adventurous, high-quality production, and broad songwriting. Though Two Eleven lacked a true conceptual vision, at least it had strong songs with potential hit value. “Put It Down” featuring Chris Brown is rhythmic radio gold. Advanced-sounding tracks “So Sick” and “Slower” had what it took to be embraced by urban as prized singles. Elsewhere, Brandy flawlessly adds in gem-worthy solos like “Wish Your Love Away” and “Without You.” In a few words, Two Eleven is just that album – period. – A.F.
48. VII — Teyana Taylor (2014)
Before Teyana Taylor became a household name from her iconic performance in Kanye West’s “Fade” video, she released an album that many people slept on. Taylor has always been open about her musical influences. On VII, her debut album, the Harlem native takes a few pages from the ‘90s R&B playbook to create a timeless masterpiece. She draws inspiration from some of her idols like Aaliyah, Brandy, Janet Jackson and Lauryn Hill. Co-writing every track on the album, Taylor enlisted help from hitmakers like James Fauntleroy, Eric Bellinger, Harmony Samuels, Boi-1da and Stacy Barthe to create songs that will be played from decades to come. “I want that album you can clean up to, the album you can make love to, the album you can just relax to,” she told Fuse TV.
Taylor opens VII with “Outta My League,” which sounds like an outtake from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The calming production helps set the mood for the rest of the album. Most of the album sounds like it was made for the bedroom, especially on “Request,” “Do Not Disturb” featuring Chris Brown and the booming lead single “Maybe” featuring Pusha T and Yo Gotti. She looks for a no-strings-attached affair on the Fabolous-assisted “Broken Hearted Girl” (don’t let the title fool you.) The album isn’t completely sex-driven, though. She reflects on a failed relationship on the piano-driven ballad “Sorry,” before finally dismissing her no-good man on “In the Air.” With VII, Taylor successfully positioned herself as an R&B singer who cared more about making meaningful music than keeping up with trends. — K.S.
49. Woman to Woman — Keyshia Cole (2012)
Put some respect on Keyshia Cole’s name. For the most part, this Oakland native has a solid catalog, even though there was a disconnect with fans and critics on her fourth LP Calling All Hearts. Taking serious note, the R&B vocalist regained her early career glory on Woman to Woman. This essential comeback album perfectly mixes Cole’s trademark soul-baring touch to tuneful radio melodies and forward-minded arrangements. Album highlights include the whimsical duet “Wonderland” featuring Elijah Blake; the beans-spilling title track with Ashanti; the grand ballads “I Choose You” and “Trust and Believe;” and everything else in between. Woman to Woman is indeed a strong return for a promising R&B legend with more fire in her belly. – A.F.

Like many artists in the early 2010s, Chris Brown merged his sound with that of contemporary genres such as Dubstep and EDM on 2012’s Fortune, and with innovation came criticism from critics and fans alike. However, in 2014, the Grammy-winning artist proved he was still all in for R&B with his sixth album, X. Combining old and new sounds, X is anchored by radio-ready singles Brown fans were accustomed to such as “Love More,” “New Flame,” and the massive summer hit “Loyal.” The latter went on to peak at number nine of the on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and is now certified four times platinum in the United States. With this project, Brown also became one of the few artists to reconnect with the late songstress Aaliyah on “Don’t Think They Know.” An LP for the ages, X is stacked with features from some of the biggest stars of the time such as Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, Trey Songz, Usher, Rick Ross, Brandy and more. Plus, it features production from some of the brightest talents including Diplo, DJ Mustard, and Jean Baptiste. WHO IS HE:
Professor Oak is a renowned Pokémon Professor most notably known for his invention of the Pokédex, his Welcome To The World of Pokémon! lecture / documentary and his extensive research surrounding the relationships between pokémon and people. He’s a very recognizable icon in the pokéworld; it would be impossible not to know who he is.
Alternatively, while he’s mostly known for being a scientist, he has wide recognition for his Pokémon poetry. He also does regular recordings with DJ Mary at Goldenrod Radio Tower.
The Professor resides in Pallet Town, Kanto, in one of the world’s most impressive laboratory reserve - stretching across acres upon acres of land, built entirely to replicate all types of pokémon’s natural habitats and terrains.
As a former pokémon trainer ( as well as Kanto Champion ), he has one grandson, Gary Oak, who is also former pokémon trainer, but is now currently on the path to becoming a Scientist himself, specializing in fossil revival.
Points of interest:
My portrayal of Professor Oak is mostly anime-based. This means I do not consider game function as canon or as character trait (ex. Professor Oak forgetting his grandson’s name. I have heard this joke enough to last me a lifetime, please Don’t™.) However, I include some elements of the manga/game, I guess, but usually only to fill in the many gaps untouched in the anime. With that being said, Green / Blue / Red and even Daisy do not exist. I have exceptions of interactions with some people, but it does not fall under my Main Canon and is more of some weird, blended AU, lol.
Professor Oak is a 50+ year old man. On top of that, a parent and a grandparent. Because of this, most of the time ( not always ) he will naturally be more intuitive and perceptive to situations than a younger muse might be. He has had many, many life experiences to draw from that he applies to current context; empathizing and offering advice comes easy. With that being said, please communicate with me if I’ve crossed a line with this; I won’t take offense!
Professor Oak has interacted with legendary Pokémon. See: Celebi, ft. Suicune. Professor Oak is not immune to... strange occurrences. He’s interacted with the legendary pokémon Celebi ( and Suicune ) when he was a young boy. However, I portray this muse as someone that has seen much more ( of the unexplainable, not necessarily legendaries ), yet appreciates them within the comfort of his own privacy.
Professor Oak has very high public status! While the man certainly lives his life as a regular person, his life is anything but. Hailing from Kanto and living peacefully in Pallet Town, Samuel’s demeanor is very humble, but his Net Worth is one of the highest, given his important influence, multi-faceted popularity and on-going relevancy among the citizens of the poké-universe. It goes without saying that he has made some of the most important contributions to the field of science and world of pokémon, but he is also sort of a pop culture “idol”. His name is attached to hundreds of awards, recognitions, lifetime achievements, entertainment achievements. Whatever there is to do, Professor Oak does it all: Scientist, Writer, Artist, Humanitarian, Pokémon Professor, TV Host, Radio Host, University Lecturer, Motivational Speaker, Activist, League Advisor, Parent. What they’ve been up to recently:
*POST-CANON. Same ol’, same ol’. Professor Oak has many years left in him yet! You can still find him on his happy little hill in Pallet Town doing what he does best: giving trainers their starters, and babysitting those same 9482536 kids under his care. Including, but not limited to all the 3948357927682294 pokémon he and - everyone’s favorite personal assistant son - Tracey Sketchit share responsibility for. His life will pretty much be the same, as it has been; the perks of being old and well-adjusted. *I use ‘post canon’ loosely. My default timeline is ongoing with the show itself, but since time never seems to progress, I’ve taken it upon myself to lazily assume some years have passed since S1E1 ( hence why I say Oak is 50+ rather than actually 50 ).
MULTI-VERSE. If you are a non-pokémon muse, Professor Oak will happily accept that you’re simply not someone from his universe. As mentioned above, stranger things have happened to him. Because of his own experiences, he’s very open-minded about the possibilities the universe has up it’s sleeve. I like to think of his corral and his lab are portal spots for the unknown to materialize. Maybe a point deep in the mountain and forest terrain. Or perhaps from the forest ( between Kanto and Johto ) where Celebi dwells. This concept isn’t necessary to follow for the multi-verse, just a suggestion! TL;DR Let Professor Oak be your away-from-home grandpa, he has lots of Experience™.
Where to find them:
DEFAULT VERSE. There are a lot of places to find the ever-active Professor Oak. However, the top three most common places are: his research lab ( corral included ) in Pallet Town, Kanto, Goldenrod Radio Tower, and Celadon University. Because he is so famous, he can be anywhere, though. Whether it’s doing charity work, raising awareness, doing lectures, being a guest at internships, working with media across regions, visiting other pokémon professors, being on a much needed vacation, traveling for work. Pretty much, wherever your muse is, I can find a reason for Professor Oak to be there.
POST-COLLEGE. I don’t actually have a ‘verse’ for this but it takes place shortly after Samuel finishes grad school and takes position as Kanto’s Pokémon Professor. He’s the first one to reside in Pallet Town. The lab itself is still under renovation; he’s moved back home after being away for years at school, and still trying to mourn the loss of his fiancé. He’s a single father, struggling to balance work and parenthood, but he gets by. ( Further down this timeline, about thirteen years later, he suffers the loss of his children, and becomes the guardian of his grandson, Gary Oak. )
To find Professor Oak is the other ‘verses’ from the Offered / Desired sections, just ask.
Current plans:
Keeping busy. Professor Oak is a very goal-oriented person and although he finds relaxation necessary, he also prefers to be active. His hands are always full running the biggest pokémon lab, but he’s always throwing himself into new projects of all kinds of varieties.
Travel and meet new people. Ever the social butterfly, the Professor is always welcoming new faces to his growing list of companions. Although his reasons for traveling are no longer for becoming a Pokémon Champion, he finds that there are plenty of things he hadn’t quite noticed or appreciated before. It’s interesting to see how some things have changed, and for others, how they’ve stayed the same. It’s all for business purposes of course ( mostly ), but coming full circle provides closure for memories he’d only reminisced about for years after he graduated from college.
Supporting Gary. As his grandson begins his journey in the field of science, Professor Oak prioritizes helping him adjust and giving him the support he needs.
Otherwise, the plans depend on what your muse brings. :O

I’m in the middle of doing my homework, when suddenly the notification for the 3rd season PV come and I get really hype and suddenly got the urge to translate this. Sorry for any grammar mistake and other such thing. I get help from my dearest friend to translate some word, thanks a lot!
1.Tenn, I think Tenn-nii said this to Kujo-san. I mean... other than him, who else?
2.Gaku, TRIGGER may be in trouble because of the rumour. (Fuck the paparazi)
3.Ryuu, I’m pretty sure Ryuu-san said this to Tenn and Gaku. Because they get angry because of the ‘problem’
What’s written on the red text is read as ‘tetorarukia’, and I actually get really confuse so I decide on ‘tetrarchy’ after some discussion with my friend.
NEW GROUP ZOOL, Because there’s no actuall text of the kanji, there may be some mistake.
4.Inumaru Toma, , I heard him said ‘trigger mo zama nai na’ and that zama is a bit confusing, but from the flow of the line. I think it can be translate as that.

13.Tamaki, and again no subject. And I think he said this to So-chan because Sougo tend to hold everything by himself. Tamaki said ‘gokai’ which mean ‘misunderstanding’. And by ‘misunderstood about you’ here, is not ‘I didn’t know you are that kind of person’ but it means that Tamaki ‘misunderstand’ about something that So-chan does.

Well I think this is the first time an actual antagonist like group appear, since TRIGGER have a nice rivalry with I7. And Re:Vale is an AWESOME senpai.
1.狗丸トウマ (Inumaru Toma):CV 木村昴 (Kimura Subaru)
From the line in the PV, I conclude that this Toma is some rude bastard with skill. The usuall pattern would be ‘Badmouthing – mouth fight – one of the member said ‘so u can do better bro?’ – end up really good’... Yeah :v Well, we still don’t know tho.
The seiyuu Kimura Subaru, I recognize his voice because ‘Dance with the Devil’ anime. Also he’s the seiyuu of ‘Giant’ from Doraemon XD.I have no worry for his singing skill tho, have heard it before and I like it.
2.亥清悠 (Isumi Haruka):CV 広瀬裕也 (Hirose Yuuya)
I’m not sure how to describe him. He can be the hot-blood type like Gaku that hate losing but is cocky and will go ‘I don’t need any weak rival’ or the doesn’t care type like Yamato onii-chan.
His seiyuu Hirose Yuuya, I’m not familliar with his name. When I search him, turn out he’s the megane from the anime Handa-kun. The one who always wear the Gakuran. I’ll just watch over him with warm heart ^^ I hope he does a good job.
3.棗巳波 (Natsume Minami):CV 西山宏太朗 (Nishiyama Kotarou)
He looks like the type that seems nice at first but will said the cruelest thing at the end, or maybe said it with no harm meaning. (But hurting instead.).
I recognize his voice, well Nishiyama-san voice is good so I wonder why he doesn’t get more role ._. I hope he get more in the future, and I think his voice kind of fit this kind of character.
4.御堂虎於 (Mido Torao):CV 近藤隆 (Kondo Takashi)
I think since he said that kind of line, he may be blunt character that’ll say anything in his mind.I’ve a feeling I like him out of these 4.
KONDO-SAN!!! Well the reason I may like him is because of this too. I really like Kondo-san since hearing to his Drama CD XD. At first I didn’t notice (I forget his name kanji), when I translate it well man I’m really shock and start to getting hype. At first I was like “Oh all of the cast is ‘new’ to me. It will be kind of fresh then.” Means I’m not famiiar at seeing them in anime or other. But then Kondo-san come ^^. Well I look forward to seeing them in the actuall game.
TRIGGER
From the lines of Tenn, Gaku and Ryuu. I think they get into some kind of the trouble with public because of a wrong rumour by the magazine. But damn Tenn line at the end is so cool, his profesional attitude doesn’t drop at all. TRIGGER is this season main group (?) so I look forward to what will happen. There’s many side of Tenn and Ryuu that still unknown yet.

Then we have Yamato onii-chan. He has too much mystery for my liking, So I expected we finally can know some fact. From Nagi and Yuki dialog in the second season, I think Yamato is former actor and quit for some reason. So that lines may be direct to.. someone that he want to revenge at first (?).
Riku and Iori lines may be connected. Riku said a day like today, might not come again while Iori said he will fight. So maybe there’s some trouble that will cause them to crumble, and the manager and Iori will try to do something about it.
I don’t have many thing to said about Sougo and Tamaki, because maybe they have some big argument again. But I don’t really have a clue about what it is, expected it is a misunderstanding. It can’t be about Aya-chan again, because she and Kujo go overseas. (Its amazing Tamaki can still meet Tenn-nii without asking him about Aya-chan, or.. did he?)
Mikki please realize that you’re love by many person ><, but I understand what he mean. Its scary to accept yourself when we don’t know what the other is thinking.
Momo and Yuki seems to have a new goal(?), Idk about Yuki but Momo’s past is mostly reveal. So let’s see what else they have for us. And that mysterious man in the last scene, seriously WHO ARE YOU~ (Last dimention reference :v) That can’t be Zero.... right?
If you have play until the end of season 2, you can see a picture of TRIGGER and text saying “The next stage is...” (Yeah, I think this is what is written there). So this 3rd season will focus on TRIGGER (?). Also from the Nico Nama from las year August, they said Nagi will play big part in the 3rd season. So its explain that word, that so unlike Nagi. They also said there will be a lot of tears again T_T like the usuall ainana. AND from the official site, they said this 3rd season will have a big volume (the story will be long), also close to the core of the story.
Now soon they will have an anime too, but the release date is not clear yet. Tbh honest I’m a big dan of utapri, but the story is just too much of a failure as they get more season. (Let’s accept it guys). What’s the point of saying its reverse harem, just said that its music idol anime like B-project. Now, I just start playing ainana since february or march, but I’m a total fangirl now. Usually I play rhythm game for the music game, but for ainana I play for the character and most of all THE STORY. Yup its always soo good, that I cry. I like the music too of course ^^
And the character all of them is so awesome. I’m still not sure who’s my favourite right now, because yeah. ALL OF THEM IS GREAT. The rabbit chat is really interesting. And now they’re gonna make a new feature, I think its called ‘Tv Rabbit’ With this we can see the interaction between member and backstage scene (?). I’m really look forward to this ^^

BTS - BLACK SWAN

Neither a Thom Yorke nor Darren Aronofsky cover...
Michael Hong: It would have made perfect sense for BTS to rehash the same sparklingly bright polished pop of "Boy with Luv" or even succumb to the trendy dark-pop of other boybands. It then comes as a surprise when BTS released "Black Swan," perhaps their boldest piece of experimentation, to laments of it being an otherwise "normal R&B influenced K-pop track." As if any boyband, Korean or Western, is performing over beats that sound like the work of early Clams Casino mixtapes. "Black Swan" incorporates elements of the darker, moodier sounds of Western pop, like how the blurred line between rapping and singing is reminiscent of the likes of Post Malone. They also manage to make a statement on their unity through the heavy-handed use of Auto-Tune and blending of voices that managed to confuse even the most esteemed lyric video makers. And if that weren't enough, BTS then released an accompanying "art film," which borders on c-levels of pretension, altering the track by burying it under a flurry of strings. Both the video and updated track are completely worth the title of "art film" and under that layers of strings, "Black Swan" sounds terrifyingly claustrophobic, amplifying the intensity of each member's desire, their longing to continue producing music. The streaming version of "Black Swan" can be seen as a great example of BTS' bold experimentation and unity, but it's the absolutely bonkers "art film" mix, cramped and confessional, that has me all-in on their imminent comeback. Brad Shoup: I have to admit, I really like the idea of an idol on the wrong side of 30 running up to people and wailing "what's my thang -- tell me now." Still, they get credit for taking on artistic mortality over nylon strings that land as delicately as ballerinos. [6]
Alfred Soto: Is this a Weeknd track? The first fifteen seconds sported the same click 'n' moan. Then the suppleness of the chorus ceding ground to the "yeah yeah yeah"s got me -- yup, BTS have entered the craftsmanship chapter of their remarkable careers. [7]
Ryo Miyauchi: The Boys' once-animated hip-hop is now brooding and sapped of color and understandably so: this is the sound of music when it no longer evokes that precious spark like it used to when you first fell in love with it. Everything from the beat, the hook to rhyme sounds like the ghost of its former self, and witnessing BTS go through the motions is excruciating. [6]
Leonel Manzanares de la Rosa: The vocal layering and the traditional instrument emulations themselves work wonders and would definitely enhance a more atmospheric setting, but the trap beat and the somewhat static movement of the track completely limit its potential. Still, it does serve its ambitious music video, and together make a much better result, but as a song it still falls short, even compared to BTS' other adventurous singles. [5]
Alex Clifton: "Boy with Luv" specifically helped me reconnect with my love of music after fearing I'd lost it for so long. To hear BTS release a song that goes through those same fears is quite reassuring. Becoming disconnected with my ability to create has been at the forefront of my mind over the past few years. I have days where I forget how to write, where every sentence that comes out feels wrong and sounds like it was written by a three-year-old. I have whole stories and universes in my head, but if I try to do anything related to those projects on paper, I lose. Everything becomes wooden and staid and not worth saying. But writing is also the one thing I've known I've wanted to do for my whole life -- what happens if (and when) I lose that connection? I want to make it clear that when I discuss writing this way, it's not just that I want to make art but merely don't put in the work for it. What I mean is the deep, unsettling fear that the one skill I've been certain about since I was a kid is something that could slip away at any time and I'd never learn how to get it back. What if I use up all my words? If I can't come up with anything worth saying again? It's a haunting thought that keeps me up at night with worry. The message of "Black Swan" is that, despite existential despair and horror, you've got to keep pursuing that spark, the urge to create stuff because art brings meaning into a dark world. It's a terror whenever you face the void of your own depression and art, but something that you need to push through in order to get to the other side. I can't say that this song has made it any easier for me to put pen to paper on the novel I've written on-and-off for six years in order to do much needed revisions, but it does remind me to keep at it. The words haven't dried up yet. I've still got things to say. [8]
