Things About Tara Lewis That I Made up Because the Writers Neglected Her

Her birthday is April 22, 1973.

She was born in Fort Meade, Maryland.

Her mother's name was Evelyn.

Her parents were high school sweethearts, and they both grew up in and have deep family ties to Prince George's County, Maryland (the part of Maryland that borders D.C. to the east and contains several of the wealthiest majority-Black communities in the United States).

When she was a little girl, her father's pet name for her was "my little ladybug," and he still calls her that occasionally even though she's in her forties now.

She bears a striking physical resemblance to her mother, who was also a very tall lady, but not quite as tall as Tara.

She's played the piano since she was four years old.

She was on the track team in high school and broke her school's record for the Girls' 800m.

While at Dartmouth, she spent a semester abroad in Geneva, which is where she perfected her French.

She loves dogs, but she's never been able to have one of her own: first because her family moved around so much, then because she was a broke, busy university student, and now because of the long hours and constant travel that comes with her job.

Of course, he found some reason to need the book before Tara was finished with it just so he could call her, and of course, when he did, they ended up talking for hours and forgetting about the book altogether. He took her back to the same spot in the library to propose to her.

She joined the FBI right after her divorce. They'd been trying to recruit her for a while, but after she and Daryl split up, she felt like she needed a fresh start and a change of scenery, so she left New Hampshire for Quantico.

She requested a transfer to the San Francisco field office in 2009 because Gabriel was living in San Francisco and having a rough time, and she felt obliged to go out there so she could keep an eye on him. After all, it was easier for her to transfer to a different FBI field office than it would be for her aging father to close up shop in D.C. and start a whole new business in California.

After she and Gabriel became estranged, she applied for the first available opening in the BAU so that she could move back east and be close to her father and the rest of her family again.

I never considered myself a lucky man. Life had proven time and time again that no matter how many four leaf clovers I set out to search for, how many pennies on the ground faced heads up I stumbled across, luck was never on my side. I’ve learned to live with it, accepted my fate as the world’s smartest punching bag long before I was even in college.

But then I met her, and as cheesy as it sounds, I didn’t need luck that morning.

The second I woke up, the universe seemed to have it out for me specifically. I swung my legs over my bed, and in my half asleep daze stepped on my glasses, successfully breaking them. Unable to see on my short trip to the bathroom, I stubbed my toe… twice. Once I finally finished my morning routine more methodically, I walked out of my apartment only to bump into a stranger, sending the coffee she was holding all the both of us.

I had tried to apologize so many times, cutting my words short when they didn’t feel right. I had gotten through a series of “I’m, uh, oh, I, you,” before her smile interrupted my thought process, leaving me awestruck instead.

“That’s okay, but you owe me a coffee now.” She giggled, actually giggled, even with the scorching liquid causing her shirt to stick to her body. “Maybe… together?”

I didn’t hesitate to agree, taking her up on the offer that weekend and never looking back. Even when a loud crash, followed by a quiet, harsh ‘shit’ woke me up in a startle, there was no regret. Maybe just a little concern for my girlfriend who now that my eyes have adjusted to the darkness, can be seen holding her knee on the floor of our bedroom.

“Hey, I didn’t mean to wake you,” she whispered out, grabbing onto the dresser to stand straight again. Once she was on her feet, she came over to sit on the edge of our bed, immediately running her fingers through my hair. If I wasn’t so worried about her knee, I probably would’ve fell asleep again.

“Are you okay?” She giggled at my scratchy morning voice before nodding her head. It’s then I realized how the sun hasn’t even begun to rise, the room still pitchblack. “What are you doing up?”

“Getting ready to go to the city, sleepyhead,” she said as if it was the most obvious answer, but truthfully, it left me with more questions.

“At... 5 am?” I sat up, glancing at the alarm clock three times just to make sure I was reading it right. She may have always been a little strange, but usually at a reasonable hour.

At this, she stood up to continue getting ready for the very early morning. Now I notice why she fell, the piles of clothes leading to the closet had to have at least half of her outfits compiled together.

“Well, yeah. I want to get there before noon.” Even in my perplexed state, I rose from the bed and carefully tiptoed around haphazardly thrown clothes to reach her.

While wrapping my arms around her waist still hidden under my t-shirt, I questioned. “It’s right outside? You have 7 hours.”

She turned to look at me funny as if I wasn’t the one digging through clothes and waking up before dawn to walk literally 5 minutes to my desired location. My eyebrows must have subconsciously furrowed at one point, because she brought her hand up to stroke her thumb on my forehead. Immediately, I felt the tension melt, no longer caring to correct my confusion. She still did it anyway.

“Not DC, silly. New York!” I wish it were untrue, but my heart dropped at her words. She was leaving, going to a city I wasn’t familiar with beyond reading about, solving cases, and memorizing subway maps. Is this how she feels every time I board that jet?

“W-what? You’re just going to New York City?” I inwardly cringed at how desperate and sad I sounded, but I really didn’t want her to leave.

“Mhm,” she mumbled, turning back around to return digging in her closet.

“For how long?” Please change your mind. Please change your mind. Please change you-

Realizing that I was fully awake, she let out a boisterous laugh, allowing the way it bounced off our four little walls to return back to us. It was a sound most treasured. “I was hoping to get back around 9.”

“What?” I leaned back to look at her like she was absolutely preposterous. I mean, she was!

“Roadtrip!”

That’s how I found myself in the passenger seat of her car, no coffee in my hand because I wasn’t allowed until I have “a real cup of coffee.” Whatever the hell that means better happen soon, because as much as I loved watching the way she concentrates on the road in front of her, my eyes were starting to droop.

“It’s going to be another 4 hours. You can sleep, my love.” How she knew me so well, I will never be able to figure out, but I was out before we even made it across state borders.

That however, didn’t last very long. My girlfriend may be short and sweet, but behind the wheel? That’s a different story. The horn to her car is a very familiar sound when I’m jolted awake by a sudden stop.

“Really, asshole? Go!” She yelled, slamming her hand against the top of the steering wheel before looking over at me. “Hey, I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to wake you yet. I forgot how awful drivers are here.”

“Where is here exactly?” I questioned, sitting up from my slouched position to find cars practically on top of each other on a road not wide enough for two lanes.

“New Jersey. We’re 10 minutes away.” Wow, I didn’t realize I slept for that long, and I have to admit I’m a little surprised I wasn’t woken up sooner.

“How are we 10 minutes away? It’s at least another 30 to get to the tunnel.” Looking at our surroundings didn’t help me determine our exact location. To the left of us, there were dozens of graffiti murals on the side of what I assumed was another elevated highway. To the right, sidestreets with local businesses ranging from auto repair shops to fast food joints to gyms.

“Nuh uh, stop analyzing mister. You’ll know when we get there.” She waved a finger in my directions, putting a pin in my scrutinization. I pouted right back, successfully playing along to the theme of her scolding me like a 5 year old.

“I don’t like surprises you know.” It was the truth, but her contagious laughter that filled the car made me slightly less disinclined to stop asking questions.

“Oh I know, but trust me, you’ll like this one.” She went to go reach over to grab my hand from where it was resting in my lap, but stopped short and retracted in favor of slamming the horn. “Oh, come on!”

“So you drove to a train station... in New Jersey?” I asked while she was… attempting to park the car.

“Well, yeah. I’ve been taking this route since I was a little girl.” Once she finally figured out how to evenly space a two door convertible in a very spacious parking spot, she unbuckled her seatbelt, and was quick to grab her bag from the backseat. “Well, come on mister, we’re going to miss the train.”

To be quite honest, I have never been so lost in my life. I could probably pinpoint our exact location on a map if I wanted to, granted I was given any sort of information, but part of me didn’t want to. Scratch that, all of me didn’t want to, because my entire life has been planned out in front of me before, but right now, I get to be spontaneous with the most beautiful girl on the planet.

“Don’t let go of my hand,” she told me, lacing our fingers together and pulling me forward. ���Don’t stop to look around, you will get pushed.”

We made it inside, and if I thought the DC transit system was bustling with people constantly, this place was so much worse. There were hallways left and right, all packed with people in a rush. It seems everybody had some place to be and zero time to get there.

“Upstairs.” We walked up two flights before reaching a platform, buying our tickets and making it just in time for a train to arrive. “I know they come every 8 minutes, but thank god we made this one,” she said as she sat down.

The cart we were in wasn’t too crowded, and once I finally found a map on the wall across from us, I saw that it was a direct ride to the World Trade Center.

“You said you took this train when you were little?”

“Yeah, I went to the city a lot as a kid. This was the easiest, and the cheapest way there.” A small smile played at her lips, obviously the product of some childhood memory. “I used to hop it.”

“Of course you did,” I laughed back with her, thinking about how an innocent looking child would be the first person to get away with sneaking onto the train.

“I said it before, I will say it again. Do not let go of my hand.” This time it was more stern, and if I were being honest, I would say that it got me the slightest bit nervous. She must have noticed, she always does, because she continued. “Don’t worry, it just gets congested and I don’t want to lose you.”

She was right about that, it indeed was very congested, but that was okay because she was holding my hand, and I would follow her just about anywhere if it meant she kept looking over her shoulder and smiling when she saw me. Once we made it across the way, and in front of heavy looking glass doors, she turned to me and started walking backwards.

“You okay? This is definitely not off to a great start.” She was wrong, it was off to a perfect start.

“Yeah, I’m okay, but you might want to watch where you’re going,” I said before her back hit the door.

“Please I can get here with my eyes closed.” And then we were outside, and all 5 of my senses were hit immediately. The sun was shining down on us, and before I could complain about not bringing my sunglasses, she handed them to me. My heart fluttered at the innocent act, taking the sunglasses with such gratitude even though she had already moved on to retrieve hers. “Do you smell that?” She asked.

“There are a lot of answers to that question,” I told her, not knowing if she was talking about the smell of the construction happening at the corner, the permanent garbage smell or something entirely different.

“The hotdogs, silly. Come on, there’s nothing like ‘em.” This time, I laced our fingers together, not because I was scared of losing her, I was, but I just really wanted to be closer to her. She didn’t mind, in fact, she let out a content hum and leaned her head on my arm as we walked to the stand.

“Can I get four hotdogs with sauerkraut and two grape sodas,” she asked the vendor, who politely nodded before moving on to prepare our food.

“You’re going to have a heart attack by 35,” I said as I nudged her with my shoulder. She gave me a small push back before answering.

“Is that a doctor’s diagnosis?” She asked as she took our now ready food into her hands, after paying the man before I even had time to blink. I just grabbed the two cans of soda and followed her where she was making a beeline for a park bench. “Watch out for skaters.”

“Yes, it is indeed a doctor's diagnosis.” I unwrapped one of the hotdogs before taking a bite. I closed my eyes and let out a content hum. “It may be a little worth it.”

“Exactly.” We sat there quietly, enjoying the warm weather and sounds of wheels against pavement. At one point, she rested her head against my shoulder, and I am convinced wherever she went would be Heaven.

“Are your eyes closed?” We found ourselves with both our hands interlocked, my eyes closed while she walked backwards. I gave an ‘mhm’ before she continued. “We’re here, just keep them closed, and…” her words trailed off. “Okay open.”

I opened my eyes to her holding her arms out in the middle of the largest bookstore I’ve ever seen. “Surprise!” My eyes were bouncing everywhere. It wasn’t too crowded, the large stairwell across the store catching my eye first. There were bookshelves tens of feet high, all loaded with different genres and authors. To the right of us, tiny knick knacks and pins and socks. It was beautiful.

“Wow,” I whispered out, still stuck in my place admiring our surroundings. She was beaming up at me, a hint of pride at her successfulness to drag me 6 hours away to the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.

“The Strand has always been my favorite place in the city. Come on, let’s go explore.” She grabbed my hands again, pulling me deeper into the store towards a shelf labeled adult fiction.

Six books, three pairs of socks and a postcard later, we were back on the busy streets of New York, aimlessly walking and admiring the tall buildings and different attractions. Well she was, I was admiring the way she was looking around like it was her first time here. Maybe I should have been paying more attention to our surroundings, but no amount of skyscrapers or fountains could possibly ever match up to her level of beauty. 

“Have I ever told you how much I love you?” I asked randomly, startling her into jumping a tiny bit before giggling. She stopped us, turning to face me fully before reaching up to grab my face in her hands.

“Once or twice.” The kiss we shared on the New York streets were no different than the ones before, but this time, it felt like a silent promise. A passing between two lovers that no matter where we are, our love is the most beautiful thing there is. “I love you too, dork.”

George and Nick break up. Ned sells The Claw back to George and opens a vintage auto restoration and “specialty repairs” shop. He buys a craftsman mansion near downtown and turns it into a boy's home.  

With seed money from Nick and Ryan, George opens a cafe, a pizza parlor and buys Johnny Mac's bar (re-naming it Buddy's) in addition to the Claw. Her sister’s help run what will become their family’s burgeoning hospitality empire. There is tension between George and Jesse who isn't interested in business and wants to go to the JC in hopes of becoming a marine biologist. George buys the Breaker Hotel later in her life. All of her establishments are notoriously (and conveniently) "haunted". Trip advisor stickers on the door and mentions on lonely planet-all the things. George becomes a rags to riches business marketing wonderkind about town. George struggles to be taken seriously by the old money investors and conservative business owners she must rub elbows with now. In the end she'll expand to Boston and NY and get into real estate and have enough money to throw in all their faces for the rest of time just like Nick whom she may reconnect with at some point.

Ryan struggles with alcoholism again, gets a DUI and enters rehab where he becomes interested in art. He gets involved in collecting and patronizing and when he falls in love with an artist he is inspired to become the Cathrine the Great of Horseshoe Bay: investing in culture, the arts and championing the environment and the education of young women in particular.  He gets his pilots license and flying in his vintage plane (restored by Nick of course) becomes a favorite hobby of his. He turns the Lilac Inn into the local girl's home.  He opens what becomes a renowned museum in honor of the the forgotten historical figures of New England in Boston. With the help of Carson he lobbies NYU to create a journalism scholarship in Lucy’s name.  He dies before he turns 60 in a landing accident while returning from a half hour flight he took to observe the bay on a particularly nice day.  

Bess acquires a student visa by becoming a cosmetology student at the local JC but doesn’t fit in and becomes an “illegal” resident again when she drops out of beauty school.  She’s a part time secretary for Nick and waitress at the claw again. She bungles Nick’s flow and he has to let her go at which point she finds a job in a bookshop after bonding with the manager over a mutual love of AJ Crane novels. She hones an affinity and strong sales numbers for the antique/rare book section and she uses her Newley sharpened expert eye to forge her papers all while angling for an apprenticeship with the mysterious owner which will allow her to begin building clientele amongst the wealthy collectors of Horseshoe Bay and get out of the counterfeit game she's been running on the side to get by. She fully embraces the dark-intellectual trope and pursues her PHD. at a historic, prestigious and secretive private school in Horseshoe Bay. She buys a dope ass queen-anne with a turret that she restores and lives in. She eventually becomes an art dealer (specializing in "rare objects" of course), chief buyer for the Hudson family trust and patron of the historical society.  After her eventual death at a ripe old age she gets a statue in her likeness, her house becomes a historic landmark and she becomes a legend in horseshoe bay for being it’s favorite Rich Auntie Supreme. Rumor has it her spirit still walks the town. Local legend says if you happen to see her ghost it’s an omen of good luck to come.

Nancy and Ace briefly open their own PI detective agency in Nick's building downtown. They begin to build a respectable reputation despite their youth. They assist Horseshoe Bay PD on "strange" cases, accept work from the town’s folk, and PI work from Carson. Nancy gets into Columbia and makes the tough choice to leave town for her education.  Grant moves in to fill her place at the agency. Things go well for a while but end up sideways when Ace suffers from an opioid addiction. Grant does his best to cover his brother’s tracks for a while but Nancy briefly must return from Columbia at his panicked behest to help him track down Ace when he goes missing on New Years Eve.  After a short stint in a detox center Ace decides to join the army on a whim without consulting anybody. He becomes a field medic first and an Army Ranger after that.

With the PI agency dissolved Grant joins the NYPD police academy (like his father *winkwinkwink*) after Ace goes to bootcamp and begins pursuing an advanced degree studying criminal psychology at NYU in hopes of someday working for the FBI as a profiler.  He naturally joins the nypd and becomes a rising star in his precinct. He and Nancy develop a close friendship while both living as students in the city and bond over their concern for Ace. Frant often lends her an assist, a quote, a clue or feeds her information for her stories.

Nancy shows up in the city at Columbia quickly becomes the darling of the journalism school and lands an internship at the school paper but after a promising freshman year is kicked out for breaking the school’s code of ethics whilst pursuing evidence that a cult is running a human trafficking ring fronting as a powerful and infamous secret society on campus that has been laundering it's profits through a fraternity's alumni donations by blackmailing a member of their executive board. After her expulsion she continues to pursue the story with encouragement from her friends and family  (in particular from Ace whom she maintains regular contact with via WRITTEN letters before he joins RRC. It’s romantic af but everything remains plutonic on the surface as is cannon, of course)  She publishes the story online. It goes viral and she's able to enter the workforce as a freelancer without her degree. She takes all kinds of assignments and has become celebrated for her thought pieces on buzzfeed, bellingcat, jezebel etc... but her bread and butter is working the crime beat in NYC.

Her sudden notoriety and reputation for being young, talented, and tenacious mean her colleagues are intimidated by her brilliance and they make her work especially hard for their respect. Despite her commercial success she's a loner and mostly isolated in the field.  She's thrilled when Bess shows up to the city looking to lay low for a while after the death of her mentor and burning some bridges in order to get out of the forgery game. She finds that she fits into city life and likes being close with Nancy and Grant after Ace's departure and George and Nick's breakup. She decides to move and she and Nancy become roommates. Bess gets a job as a bartender at Nancy’s favorite spot (a real dime store detective novel dive bar that's open in the middle of the day with low light and brick walls; maybe live music on the weekends but no marble countertops and tapas and shit) while attending Hunter college for her degree in cultural anthropology. Nancy eventually writes a true crime novel that becomes an infamous cult classic based on her experience uncovering her mother's murder and another based on her experiences with Gomber.

Bess’ graduation coincides with Ace’s homecoming and Ryan’s wedding to a renowned local artist. The crew returns to Horseshoe Bay for a couple of weeks before the ceremony for the subsequent reunions/celebrations.  While in town, the disappearance of a local girl proves to be the work of a serial killer when her body along with another girl's are found stuffed in a tree in the Gorham Woods. Nancy is hesitant to run down the story even at the behest of her editor’s pleas but decides to stay and investigate at George’s request when an arsonist burns down The Claw the night of Ryan’s reception.

(614):  Hey Girl, we got home safe! (1-614):  I know, I drove you -

Evelyn presses her knuckles to her forehead.

“Oh, so Hawke’s awake is she?” Ellana asks, tugging Evelyn’s phone out of her weak grasp and flicking through her text messages. It’s oh so very casual. It’s like she does this all the time. Evelyn would be more concerned with the breaking of boundaries if it wasn’t — well. Evelyn’s been conditioned to accept certain personal breaches at this point. And frankly, she’s the Inquisitor.

She’s got bigger things to worry about than Ellana Lavellan reading her text messages right in front of her. Now if this was Sera it would be a different story, but this is Ellana and Ellana can keep a secret for so long that the original parties involved in said secret could forget about it. And she wouldn’t tell them about it at all.

This may or may not have happened to people Evelyn knows. It may or may not have happened to Evelyn, herself very recently.

Evelyn eventually had to convince some people in one of their repair shops to crack open the safe for her and then sign a binding legal document swearing they would never disclose what was inside of the safe.

Josephine hasn’t asked her what those contracts were for but she was good enough to write them up as a side project anyway.

Evelyn never claimed to be a perfectly scrupulous person above corruption and abuse of power. Sometimes you just have to throw your weight around as Inquisitor. What’s the point in all of the stress, personal harm, mental fatigue, and constant criticism if you can’t occasionally use some of the perks for personal gain?

Evelyn might not have volunteered to be the Inquisitor, but she’ll be damned if the benefits of being said Inquisitor are less than being a tenured professor at the College of Ostwick.

No, assigned parking and an office with a window are not, in fact, enough of a perk to being one of the most notoriously spoken about people in recent history.

“It’s Garrett,” Evelyn says.

Ellana blinks, and looks back down at Evelyn’s phone. “You really need to change the names on your phone. Do you have them all listed down as just Hawke? There’s four of them.”

“Obviously not, I have Bethany and Carver by first name,” Evelyn says. “For the other two you can just guess which one it is based on how they type. Garrett texts like he’s trying to be a twenty year old girl and Marian couldn’t find punctuation or capitalization of her phone auto corrected it for her. I’m fairly certain she goes back and removes everything autocorrect puts in.”

“That is like, the exact opposite of how they text me,” Ellana says, pulling out her phone to compare, “And now you’ve got me paranoid that I’ve entered the wrong numbers under the wrong Hawke’s. Except that can’t be true because I’ve definitely been texting one or the other while they were physically present and I’ve seen them look at my text convos.”

“It’s the Hawke’s,” Evelyn says, “They probably modulate how they text depending on who they’re texting.”

“That sounds like a lot of work to be crediting Garrett and Marian with.”

“They put a lot of effort into the worst things,” Evelyn points out. “Things that, one would think, don’t deserve any kind of thought or attention at all.”

“Fair point,” Ellana says, still comparing texts. “How come you were driving Garrett around last night? Wasn’t it your night off because you have early morning meetings today? The one we’re about to go into being one of them?”

“Because it’s Garrett and he wouldn’t stop texting me until I went to pick him up,” Evelyn says. “I was getting take out in the downtown food center and he saw me and would not stop calling or texting me until I joined him and then he got so drunk I had to drive him and his friends back to their hotel.” Evelyn groans. “My take out was miserable by the time I got back.”

“What did you get?”

“Pizza.”

“Pizza’s always better cold.”

“Cold pizza just makes me think of undergrad,” Evelyn says, “I never want to go back to undergrad. I would sooner become a Chantry sister than go back to undergrad willingly.”

“I sense some passionate feelings about your university days.”

“What you’re sensing is the decades old sense memory of living off of top ramen, cold days old pizza, and energy drinks. I had two majors and a minor, and I was taking about six classes and a half plus lab per semester. I honestly don’t know how I survived intact. I have nightmares about it sometimes, you know?”

“No, actually, I don’t want to know.” Ellana slides Evelyn’s phone back to her. “I feel like your undergrad and my undergrad were vastly different experiences. Namely in that I didn’t try to kill myself by signing up for that many classes at once and only did one major and one minor. Also I still lived at home so I wasn’t eating garbage all the time.”

“Don’t need to brag about it.”

“You need to stop being bitter about undergrad and start being bitter about something more recent,” Ellana decides, “Like Garrett Hawke.”

“There are some scars that just never leave you.”

“That’s why they’re called scars, Evelyn. They aren’t really supposed to.” Ellana gives Evelyn a funny look. “Stop trying to be poetic and dramatic. You’re terrible at prose and you haven’t a single poetic bone in your body. Leave that kind of thing to people with more flare than you do and focus on the stuff you’re good at that isn’t sulking about your undergrad studies. Like…being really firm and intimidating.”

“Being a teacher.”

“Exactly.” Ellana nods. “Being strict and keeping people on track and making sure no one goes too far off topic. You know, acting blinders for people. But without actually blinding them. Just keeping them focused and relatively emotionally stable and on task.”

“Are you comparing my presence to blinders on a horse?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn mulls that over. “Not the worst I’ve been compared to. I’ll take it.”

 The Times I Tried to Love You (RoD)

i.

“Again.”

“Daaaad.” Colt was shivering, his tiny body shaking in the breeze. He had long lost his baby fat but had yet to grow into himself, still gangly-limbed, with knees that knocked together as he shifted his weight from side-to-side. His lips were starting to turn blue, but he would be fine; his body could handle one more jump.

“Again.”

“Come on Dad, it’s too dark.” He wasn’t yet old enough to be rid of childhood fears; though he never spoke about it, Teppei saw the way that his eyes peered out, into the trees, the water, still wary. These fears would only hold him back.

“Don’t make me repeat it.”

Colt’s eyes darkened and he opened his mouth, impertinent remark on the tip of his tongue before he thought better of it, begrudgingly turning to the cliff. He shot one last look back and for a moment, Teppei thought he could see his own darkness shining through the eyes of his son. Then, Colt was off, sprinting and then flying through the air.

One second. Two seconds. Three seconds. Four-and a splash.

He didn’t even scream that time. Good. 

Teppei waited, lighting another cigar as he watched the moon crawl up the night sky.

Colt would need this. He would need to learn to conquer his fears, be silent in the face of danger, crush any and all weakness before it became a life-threatening flaw that could end him.

He would understand someday.

Finally, Colt emerged from the cliff, the sea dripping from his hair, palms rubbing harsh warmth into his arms. Teppei watched his son, his heir, as he stubbed out the last of his cigar, watched his small body trudge across the grass, exhausted and worn. Colt looked up at him when he got closer, the flame in his eyes growing brighter. Good.

“Again.”

Teppei shut the door to the office; it wasn’t enough to completely muffle the noise from the repair work going on outside, but it was something.

The crew knew that he liked to take lunch alone in his office. It had been something of a ritual the last few months, slowly becoming an established habit that no one dared break. He sat at his desk, sipping his green tea, and waited.

He didn’t need to wait long. 11:55 am. Five minutes early. The phone lit up milliseconds before it rang, sharp light and shrill noise loud in the office. Teppei waited. Another sip. Another ring. A third. A fourth.

He thought, while he waited. Wondered idly why the call came early today; was the traffic lighter than normal, making the 3.4 mile drive from the high school to his home faster? Was he still at school, calling before heading to yet another detention after yet another fist fight? Had he played hooky and was calling from the road, motorcycle heading west before his mother caught on?

He could still hear that day unfolding, 82 days ago, could hear echoes of the slam of the door, the screaming. He heard it when he slept, when he was awake. “I fucking hate you.”

Teppei blinked as the voicemail alert sounded and grabbed his phone with a tired sigh. Rubbing his eyes, he pressed the button. 

“You have one new message. You have 80 saved messages.”

Teppei shut his eyes.

“You fucking prick, pick up the phone.” It was quiet in the background. Colt must be at home. His mother would still be at work so he would have the run of the house. “I wanna come back to LA. I fucking hate it here and-”

Teppei had to take a deep breath as Colt’s voice caught. The messages when he was alone were always the worst, anger and hatred and hurt spilling violently over the phone line.

“I fucking hate it here and I’m coming back and I don’t give a shit about anything you have to say about it.”

A door slammed. He was probably in his room now; Teppei could picture him flopping on his bed, phone clutched in a death-grip as he cursed through the snarl on his face.

“Will you just pick up the phone?”

Teppei waited. The pause was longer this time, Colt fuming, thousands of miles away.

“I fucking hate you.”

Teppei raised an eyebrow. It had been a long time since someone tried to intimidate him. “Absolutely not.”

“I think we can come to an agreement.”

“We are not your puppets. I said no.”

He turned to go, to get out of this alley, away from this demon, but a bitter laugh stopped him. “I think you’ll be singing a different tune when you see this, old man.”

Teppei looked over his shoulder; the man had a piece of paper dangling from two fingers, waving it teasingly in an outstretched hand. It was a photograph, a small picture, and Teppei’s breath caught. Was that…?

He stepped closer, eyes narrowing, squinting to see. It was taken from across a busy street, lens pointing into a coffee shop, the photo’s subject oblivious to the intrusion on his privacy. He understood the implication immediately.

He almost reached for it, hungry to see how he had grown in two years. Even in the dark, he could tell Colt’s shoulders were broader, hunched over a textbook. Were those dark circles under his eyes or just shadows, tricks of the light?

Teppei swallowed, jaw tensing, as the man stuffed the photo back into his pocket. “You think we can’t get to him?” He leered, breath sour in Teppei’s face, bill of the Badgers hat casting his eyes in darkness. “You think moving him across the country was enough to keep us away, to keep him safe? Newsflash, friend: he’s not safe anywhere.”

Teppei stared, unflinching. He was a man of calculations, of odds. The calculations here were not in his favor. The Brotherhood knew how to manipulate the situation by targeting the one thing he would defy any odds to protect, to save.

“One job. Just one.”

The man smiled, clapping Teppei’s shoulder with a meaty hand. “That’s all we ask.”

iv.

The door opened suddenly but Teppei didn’t move, didn’t look up. He knew Colt was here, had heard the “where’s the old man?” amid the normal jawing and scuffle of the teenagers in the shop.

He didn’t look up when Colt shut the door behind him, eyes focused on the paper in front of him. He could hear the chair legs squeak as Colt sat and then had to stifle a snarl as Colt dropped his feet on the table, right on top the ledger he was looking at. 

Finally, Teppei raised his eyes, taking in his boy, now a man, broad-shouldered and long-limbed. “What are you doing in LA?” More importantly, when was he leaving?

“Hello to you too, Pop.” Colt reclined in the chair, balancing it on two legs, hands folded behind his head. “Great to see you, really. Glad to see your crew is still bumbling along.”

“What are you doing in LA?”

Colt dropped the chair, sliding his legs to the floor, elbows on his knees. “I’m back.”

“You are in college.”

“It’s Spring Break, I wanted a vacation.”

“Then go to Hawaii.”

“Fuck you.” Colt’s eyes were blazing, the set of his mouth stern. “I’m not leaving. So you can let me back in the crew or I can just camp out here, in the shop.”

“Absolutely not. This is not for you. You’re going back to your mother.”

“Fuck you, I’m not.” He raised his chin. “You can’t boss me around anymore, old man.”

Teppei sighed. Colt was right. He was no longer a minor; he couldn’t just shove him in a car and send him away.

Not to mention, there had already been one threat to his life. If he were in LA, he was in even more danger. 

Maybe it would be better to keep him close.

“Here’s the deal.” Teppei paused as Colt cocked his head, listening. “You can help out in the shop for your break. Answer the phone. Minor repairs. That is it.”

“But…”

“That’s it. You will do nothing else.” Teppei stared at him, hard. He had faced tougher men than Colt Kaneko before; unlike those men, Colt stared right back, unflinching.

Apparently, Colt had a good amount of his father in him after all.

Teppei stood and Colt narrowed his eyes at him. “I’m not weak. I deserve a place here, in the crew.”

“I decide that.” With one last glare, Teppei opened the door to the office. “Ahem.” He stepped around Toby, ignoring the futile excuse for eavesdropping, to enter the shop floor, Colt’s petulantly stomping behind him.

“Have a safe ride back to college, buddy.”

Colt glared at Logan, shoulders raised, the two children squaring off. “Guess again. Not getting rid of me that easily.” 

Logan’s eyes were incredulous. “He’s sticking around?”

“Colt will help me out at the auto shop over his spring break.” Teppei narrowed his eyes at his son, ice in his voice, then surveyed the crew. “He won’t be involved in anything else. Are we understood?”

Teppei’s eyes cut to his son, his hands balled into fists, arms clenched at his sides. This was a mistake.

“Understood…boss.”

He knew, as soon as he saw the lights flickering at the end of the bridge, he knew how this would end. There was only one way it could end, really; since that fateful day 19 years ago, this ending was predetermined.

The LA River wasn’t wide, but it was wide enough, enough to gather the speed he needed. Kaneko pushed his foot down, pedal to the floor.

“Pop, what are you doing? They have the whole thing closed off!”

It wasn’t wide enough to say the things he needed to say, but it would have to do.

“I told you I couldn’t break free of The Brotherhood alone…but this? This I can do alone.” The Aylesbury picked up speed; he had always loved how this car could fly. Time for one last flight. “I was so obsessed with fighting for my own freedom that I jeopardized yours.”

He could hear the crew, vaguely, but was focused on one voice. “Pop, no! Come back!”

“Promise me one thing, son. You’ll get out of here. You’ll leave this life behind for good.” He tried to picture him, his son, when he was young, as he grew, the moments he remembered and the moments he missed. “You can be anything… Be more than this.”

He unscrewed the NOS, the last thing he could do for his crew. “Stay back. All of you.”

“Pop…please…you can’t leave me.” He could hear the tremor in his son’s voice. His heart ached at the pain but he would rather have his son hurt and free than bound in chains.

“Go, Colt. Go and don’t look back.”

There was always only one way this was ever going to end.

He closed his eyes.

“I knew that someday I would find you here again.”

Ellie felt her heart go up to her throat. She didn't know if she had really heard his voice or if her mind was playing a trick on her, she didn't dare look back. Her pulse accelerated fast and faster and her breathing became more and more difficult. She put her two hands over the edge, trying to stabilize herself as she rose, still not looking back. Ellie swallowed hard and closed her eyes, and without a second thought she turned around. She opened her eyes slowly and felt them automatically begin to fill with tears once more, when she saw who was in front of her.

It was Colt, laying against his white motorcycle looking at her with a smile. Ellie couldn't believe that he was there at that very moment, it was like he came out of some dream that sooner or later, she was going to have to wake up from.  She approached him slowly, gradually increasing her speed, until their two bodies collided, enveloping each other. Ellie squeezed him hard against her, still feeling that at some point he was going to disappear, and she heard Colt drop a sigh as he also pressed himself hard against her. Tears streamed non-stop from her face, hidden in Colt's neck, he was stroking her hair gently as he held her. She hadn't felt that happy in a long time, it was as if in his arms she once again found shelter from all her problems, all her fears, just like in the past. The two held each other for a long time, neither saying a word. Ellie dropped the last remaining tears and sighed, a mixture of feelings in her body. She broke the hug by taking a step back and connected her eyes with Colt's.

"Hey there, speed demon." he said as he took her hand "We have a lot to talk about."

Colt and Ellie sat on the edge of the cliff, the two looking towards the horizon. Millions of things were going through her head at that moment. It had been so long since they had seen each other and Ellie didn't know exactly what to do, or what to say. Colt seemed to read her thoughts as he cleared his throat and began to speak.

"How are you?" he said looking at her, Ellie hugged her legs and looked at him.

"I’m good" she said, it was the biggest lie she’d ever told him "How have you been?"

"I've had a few exhausting days," he said, smiling "But everything is getting better.”

Ellie was happy to know that Colt's life was getting better since the last time she saw him, after everything that had happened to him almost a year ago, she knew that Colt more than anyone else deserved a little happiness and peace in his life, even though she wasn't the reason he felt those things.

"I'm glad you're happy." she said fighting the tears that threatened to come out "How's business?"

"Which one?" Colt laughed, Ellie did the same.

"Both." she said, looking at him expectantly.

"Well, repairs in the auto-shop are about to end" Ellie saw Colt's expression light up as he spoke "In a month the place is going to operate again as usual."

"That's incredible, Colt.” she smiled “I know how much you wanted to rebuild that place.”

"Yes." Colt said "And about the other business," Colt looked at his arm, and Ellie noticed a trail of ink on his skin, the acronym MPC in the same place where she had seen Teppei's tattoo long ago "I've managed to build a good crew."

Ellie thought of the old crew, Logan, Mona, Ximena and Toby. She realized that for her the only Mercy Park Crew that could exist in her mind were her old friends and her, no one else. Maybe everyone had moved on and she wasn't sure that some of them still remembered all the good times they spent together as she did, she had always been the most sensitive of them all anyway. That’s why she had won so much joy, but lost so many fights too.

"It seems like everything in your life is going well then." Ellie said.

Colt laughed and moved his gaze to the horizon. Ellie noticed how his laugh was not one of joy, more like a sarcastic laugh. She stared at him for a moment, focusing on how his chest was going up and down because of his breathing, not saying a word for a few seconds.

"I should be happy, shouldn't I?" he asked, looking at her again.

"Aren't you happy?” she asked.

"Are you?" Colt said.

The question taken her by surprise, but Ellie knew the answer. She had asked herself the same question so many times that she had convinced herself that she would always have the same answer. At the end of the day, when the moon was up in the sky and there were no classmates to laugh with, no teachers to listen to, no homework and no texts to copy, it was then, while she was lying on her bed, with the lamp on and looking towards the ceiling, that she realized that she could never really be happy. Ellie wondered if after a long day Colt lay down in his bed and thought about her too.

"All I ever wanted was to prove to my father that I was worthy of following his footsteps." Colt pulled her out of her thoughts "Ever since I knew about his world, I've wanted to be a part of it, and I imagined myself in a few years leading the crew, letting my dad rest and devote himself to his passion, which were the cars." Colt looked back at the tattoo on his arm "I just didn’t imagine it would have been so soon.”

Ellie could see in Colt's eyes how the memory of his father still hurt him like the first day. She knew that such pain didn't go away overnight, she couldn’t imagine how she would be now if she were in that situation, maybe she would have lost her purpose to live, maybe she would have moved on and become much stronger because of the losses of life, but Colt was still there, even though Ellie knew it hurt, he was still there, going forward, he had never given up about anything. Ellie took his hand and stroked it gently, giving him courage to keep talking.

"Now I have it all," Colt continued “I still remember when I told him that one day I was going to carry on everything he had worked for, all that meant to be part of us, and he had given me so much advice on how to handle it, the business and all, as if he knew in some way that he had little time left." Colt interlaced his fingers with Ellie's, looking at her hand "The only thing he didn't tell me," their eyes connected "It's that an empire is nothing if you don't have someone to share it with."

"Colt..." Ellie said on the verge of tears.

"But it's okay," Colt shook his head "You knew what you wanted and you took it, just like I did, I can't blame you for that." Colt sighed "You’re studying what you want, you have new friends, new lovers, new challenges to face..."

"Lovers?" Ellie interrupted him with a frown.

Colt didn't look at her, on the contrary, his eyes were fixed on the calm sea that covered everything around them, and suddenly everything in Ellie's head made sense. There were days when she walked the streets near the college with her friends and swore to hear the same sound that Colt's motorcycle made, but she looked everywhere and never saw anything. Sometimes she thought she could see him looking at her from afar, and when she closed her eyes and opened them again, no one was there. It didn't happen very often, only about two times a month, but every time it happened it was like Ellie was hoping that one of those times she would turn around and see him with a smile waiting for her at the end of the street, but it never happened. Still, everything was clearer now, after hearing what he said.

"So it was you." Ellie said, looking at him expectantly waiting for his answer.

"I wanted to know if you were okay," Colt said "I needed to know if you were okay."

"You knew where to find me all this time and you never came close to me" Ellie said, a little sadness in her voice.

"You seemed happy" Colt said.

Of course Colt thought she was happy, if he only saw her when she was out on the street with her friends, or when she was going to meet them somewhere. All those moments of momentary happiness which, in the end, had no meaning to her. Colt had no idea what was going on behind closed doors, and it was obvious because he mentioned that Ellie had a new love. She thought of the times when she and Julian walked down the street with ice cream in their hands, smiling at each other while holding hands, she thought of the times when Julian would steal a little kiss from her lips just to make her smile. Colt seriously thought that Ellie had allowed herself to feel things for someone other than him because at some point, he must have seen them together.

"Colt, about the lovers thing, I..."

"You don't owe me any explanation," Colt said smiling, his smile looking totally genuine "If you're happy, then I can live with that."

Ellie thought carefully about what she was going to say next.

Walking quickly, her red heels sounding against the ground, Y/N thought about the tough day she had had. She showed up for work really late because of the morning traffic, she earned a hard argument with her boss and a lot of paperwork to do for the next day.

She went through the indoor parking reserved only for the employees of the company she worked at and got to her car. It was a red Audi A4 which fascinated her. Her car was one of the things she liked the most. Beside flowers.

When she opened the door and sat in the driver’s seat, she took a deep breath and put the keys in the ignition. Then she closed the door and started the car. She went up the ramp which led outside and huge raindrops hit the frontal glazing of the Audi.

Although Y/N loved the rain and the cold weather, that was not the best moment for a storm to break out. She still had a long way to go towards his apartment, and the big to-do list she had for that afternoon just made her feel more nervous if that was even possible.

With a quick move of her index finger, she pressed the heater button and then she joined the road. She gradually started to get warm and feeling a little better.

She heard a thunder in the distance and Y/N unconsciously startled. She liked stormes, yes. But she’d rather be in her apartment with a cup of hot chocolate in a hand while there were thunder and lightning outside. Small moments like that were one of the few that made her feel happy. Because she actually was not. She didn’t like her job, the people she interacted with, the jams in the city, or the unpleasant nosy neighbors who lived two doors away. She didn’t like a lot of things about her life, but she was scared of changing them because changes terrified her.

But the thing Y/N liked the least about her life was how pathetically lonely she felt. Her family lived out of the country and the only people she associated with were just her workmates and said nosy neighbors who always interrogated her about her personal life.

Margaery and Ophelia were a lesbian couple who lived in the same building as Y/N for over twenty years. They knew everything about the people who had lived on the same floor as them. And, as usual, they didn’t hesitate to get any information about her personal life since the very first moment she moved to that building. They were nice, but meddling too. Y/N was always trying to avoid them as discreetly as possible.  

Another thunder was heard in the distance and Y/N pushed the gas to the floor, silently thankful for the lack of traffic due to the storm.

Ten minutes later, she started to hear strange noises which seemed to come from the engine. She, confused, tried to ignore them. But the sounds wouldn’t stop. Seconds later she realized the car was losing speed, even though she was still stepping on the gas.

Realizing what was happening to her Audi, she got away from the traffic and finally stopped on a side of the road. She unsuccessfully tried to start the car. She tried again, and again. But it was not working.

Frustrated, she leaned her forehead against the wheel and took her phone from her bag. She swore and searched among her contacts, looking for the phone number of that auto repair shop that someone had recommended to her. She pressed the call button and, when she heard the voice of a man on the other side of the line, she called a tow truck after giving him her current location.

Thirty long minutes later, who seemed to be thirty hours to Y/N, a perfectly clean gray and white tow truck, with the logo of the repair shop at both sides of the vehicle, ‘Winchester & son’, showed up on the right of the red Audi.

A man got out of the driver’s seat and rounded the car while getting completely wet thanks to the pouring rain. Although he seemed not to be caring about that.

Seeing him coming towards her, Y/N put her hoodie on her head and got out of the car as well.

“Did you call a tow truck? What’s wrong with the car?” the man asked under the rain.

“Well, you see, I was driving normally and I heard some noises coming from the engine. Then the car started losing speed and it finally stopped” she explained.

“Did you pushed the accelerator after the car stopped?” he said with a smirk.

“Who do you take me for?”

“All right, it was just a joke,” he said. “Tell me, is your car completely turned off?”

“I can’t start it.”

“Okay, I think it’ll be better to tow it so that it can be checked out in the repair shop,” he said.

Y/N clicked her tongue and approached him.

“Listen, I’m in a hurry. I need to get to my apartment as soon as possible, and it’s not near here” she said raising her voice. “Couldn’t you examine it here?”

“I’m sorry, miss, but this storm could make it all more complicated. It may ruin some other systems of your car due to the rain. The best thing we can do is to tow it and take it to the repair shop” he repeated.

Y/N looked briefly to her Audi and strongly closed her eyes. When she opened them seconds later, the man was still staring at her, waiting for an answer.

“All right” she gave up.

 With Y/N’s red car towed to the truck and with so much less traffic due to the seriousness of the storm, the way to the repair shop was going to be so much quicker than imaginable.

The truck was actually really odd. It looked totally clean on the outside, but it was a complete mess on the inside. There were burger and other junk food wrappers all over the place, candy wrappers,  a glass of soda from a restaurant she frequented and a lot of CDs of some rock bands she liked.

“Excuse the mess,” said the man watching her looking around. “It’s my son, sometimes I don’t know where his head is at. He’s always leaving this trash in the truck. However, his car is always spotless. Kid stuff.”

“Do you mean the same son who works with you?” she asked watching a card with the logo and the name of the auto repair shop from a side of the passenger’s seat.

“Well yes, unfortunately. It’s usually him who uses the tow truck. Only when necessary, I tell him. But oh, no. He’s so stubborn. Dean’s always using this as a garbage can.”

Y/N smiled, imagining that boy eating every kind of junk food in the driver’s seat while listening to his rock CD’s when the signal’s read.

“Hey,” she said. “How much do you think it’ll get you to examine my car?”

“Well, it depends on the problem I find when I’m done checking it out. You know, miss, you can never figure these things out” he answered. “Anyway, we’re only a few mints away,” he said with a smirk.

Minutes later, as the man had said, the tow truck arrived at an indoor auto repair shop where it could be heard a song from AC/DC playing and the sound of a hammer hitting something metallic.

“We’re here,” said the man turning off the engine.

“Dad?” a voice was heard.

Y/N got off the passenger’s seat while the man yelled his son’s name so that he could come and help him.

“Holy fuck! That’s what I call a car” said the voice even closer to them. “Look at it, look at the color. It’s awesome. Whose is this gorgeous thi…?” asked the voice suddenly stopping next to his dad.

Next to the man, a twenty-six or twenty-seven-year-old guy’s eyes flew from Y/N to her red car. The boy was tall, he was wearing black shoes, soot-stained blue jeans, a red plaid flannel tied around his waist and a sleeveless white t-shirt which shaped perfectly to his body. His skin was pale, his muscles were toned, his full lips were irresistible, and his apple green eyes stared at her hypnotized.

“Dean, I need your help to take the car to the ground. Here, hook it” said the man.

The guy went to help out without saying a word, avoiding every eye contact with Y/N. She stood aside while hugging her bag against her chest. After everything that had happened this day, and everything that she still had to do, being in front of that gorgeous guy was going to make it all worse. Why? Because she always gets really nervous next to men just as attractive as the tow truck man’s son was.

When the Audi was down, a phone rang.

“Oh, it’s mine,” said the guy. He ran and took a phone from a shelf. He picked up and started talking. “Sammy! How’s college, little brother?”

Dean walked away from Y/N and her car, slowly walking while he talked on the phone. His father, at the same time, opened the hood of her car and started to examine it. He checked a lot of things, he sat on the driver’s seat and tried to start the engine, he loosened a nut here and tightened a screw there. However, it seemed so hard to find the cause of the problem.

“Have you had any other problems like this one before?” he asked. She shook her head.

Seconds later, Dean came back with his phone on a hand.

“Dad, it’s Sam. Do you want to talk to him?” he asked.

The man seemed to hesitate. But, seconds later, he took the phone and looked at Dean. “Serve the young lady” he smirked after he said hello to the other person on the phone.

Dean gave him a nod focusing his gaze on Y/N. The girl still had her coat on, but it was wet due to the rain. Her hair was wet as well, and she seemed to be cold.

“Hey, you can hang your coat there to dry,” said the guy pointing at a coat stand several meters away from her. “And there are some clothes here as well if you’re cold” he smiled taking a wrench from a toolbox.

“Oh, well… I won’t reject the clothes. I just need something to cover my shoulders, would that be possible?” she asked shyly.

Dean smiled, left the wrench back in the toolbox and winked at her. “Wait here.”

He came back seconds later with a blue and gray plaid flannel similar to the one he had tied at his waist.

“It doesn’t seem like it, but it’s warm,” he said giving it to her. She briefly smiled and tried it on. “I’ll ask if it’s warm in a few” Dean joked, to which she smiled. “Well, tell me, what happened to this beauty?”

“Oh, I already told your dad. He checked something in the engine when you were on the phone” she said holding the sleeves of Dean’s flannel.

“I know” he smiled, “but I haven’t talked to him about your car, so I have no idea what happened.”

“Wow, you’re right,” she said rolling her eyes. “I’m sorry, I just… have a lot on my mind right now,” she said leaning her body on the Audi. She explained the same thing she said to his father while Dean listened to every word, taking the wrench from a hand to another.

“All right, how long has it been since you don’t take this baby to a repair shop?” he asked staring at her with those green eyes.

“It’s not been checked out since I moved to the city. About a year, I think.”

The boy frowned and then raised his brows.

“I might know what’s wrong” he announced. Dean bent and got his eyes closer to the engine. Y/N, a bit curious, came over to look. He opened a compartment in the right side of the engine and Y/N’s eyes got lost in the astounding muscles in his arms. She looked away feeling the heat on her cheeks and tried not to breathe. “Thus, I was right.”

“What’s wrong with my car?”

“It’s the de-icing fluid. The container is empty, I just have to fill it and the engine will work” Dean smiled.

“Really? That easy? Wow” she raised an eyebrow and he laughed.

“What?”

“I don’t know, I thought it’d be more serious.”

“Dean! Turn that music off, come on” his dad yelled approaching them.

Dean, whose back was facing his father, smirked and rolled his eyes. Y/N smiled and he winked at her again.

When he turned off the music, his dad, who had already hung up the phone, changed the station and the man of the local radio started talking.

“It’s just the de-icing, dad. It’s empty” Dean explained before his dad asked about the car.

“Okay, I’ll go get it,” he said turning around.

Y/N sighed and smiled to herself. Maybe, just maybe, she’d get to her apartment with the time enough to finish her work. And if she didn’t, she’d sleep just a few hours to end it all up. Stressed, she took a deep breath and rubbed her arms through Dean’s flannel.

“Are you still cold?” he asked leaning on the wall.

“A little” she answered. “But this is really warm, you were right” she pointed at the blue flannel.

“I told you” he smiled.

Now that the radio was playing, Y/N missed hearing those songs from AC/DC that Dean was listening to before his dad told him to turn the music off. What if she told him that she liked rock music as well? What would Dean think? He sure would think she was being ridiculous. He did not care about her taste in music. That’s for sure.

Suddenly, the man on the radio started talking about the storm that had hit the city.

“Dozens of questions from worried listeners about the storm” he said, “the local authorities asked us for a spread of information until they themselves explain it tonight in the news: it’s recommended not to go outside until the storm subsides, it’s better to stay in a safe place, away from the danger. Avoid driving and operating machinery. Because, as you know, this is an electrical storm we’re talking about. We’ll keep updating.”

Then, a pop song started to play.

“Well, it seems like you’ve got to stay here a little more,” said Dean with a big smile.

“What? No. When my car is fixed, I’ll pay and I’ll leave” she quickly answered.

“But you heard the man on the radio. It’s dangerous to go outside.”

“I don’t care, I’m in a hurry” she insisted.

“I’m afraid my son is right, miss,” said Dean’s dad carrying a huge metallic bottle in his arms. Dean came to help and took the bottle, making Y/N’s eyes to wide open when her gaze focused on his arms. Again. “It’s not safe to drive now, you’d better stay with us until it’s gone.”

“But you don’t understand” she insisted again. “I need to get to my apartment as soon as possible and I’ve got a lot of paperwork to do. If I don’t have it tomorrow morning, my boss will fire me, I’m sure.”

Dean stared at her while he filled the container of the engine of the Audi with that liquid.

“We can do something about that,” he said. “Do you have those papers here?”

“Yeah, in my car” she nodded.

“There’s a desk in the backroom. My dad usually does the math and that stuff there, but I don’t think he’d mind it if you used it” he said looking at his dad this time.

“Oh, no. There’s no need to do that. I don’t want to disturb you.”

“No trouble at all, miss. I don’t have a problem, you can stay as much as you want” said the man with a smirk.

“But, I…”

“Just see it as a compensation. You have to stay here for a while, but at the same time you have the opportunity to catch up on your work. Right?” Dean smiled closing the de-icing fluid bottle. “By the way, that should do it.” He got in the red car and breathed in the sweet scent of roses inside of the Audi. If this woman smelled as good as that, the flannel he had given to her will smell the same. His breath stopped in his throat with that thought.

He turned the key and the car started without a problem. He smiled full of satisfaction and got out of the driver’s seat.

“Wow! Thank you very much” Y/N smiled surprised at how easy it had been.

“Don’t mention it, darling” Dean winked at her again and his dad cleared his throat.

“Oh, yeah. I almost forgot” she said avoiding Dean’s eyes. “How much does the repair cost?”

“Oh, miss. There hasn’t been any reparation. You have nothing to pay for. The only thing I ask for is you to sign the visit report, we have to keep a record of all our clients.”

“Of course” she nodded.

“Dean, take the young lady to the backroom,” he said. “If you want to, after you sign the report, you can have the desk to work on your things. I’ll tell you if they say anything important about the storm on the radio.

“All right, thank you, Mr. Winchester” she smiled walking towards her car to take the business reports she had to complete for her boss.

When she turned around, Dean was waiting for her with a big smile.

“Would you come with me?” he asked. She nodded with a shy smile.

This guy seemed to be coming from a fairytale. He had the body of an ancient god, the behavior of a royal prince, his blue flannel she was now wearing smelled like men’s perfume and he liked classic rock songs. There were many positive points.

Y/N followed the green-eyed Winchester to the backroom. His arms were moving in rhythm with his steps and she hardly tried not to drool.

“It’s right here,” he said looking at her while he walked in a wooden door. The room was warmer than expected. It was big and cozy. The walls were full of classic, old and vintage cars pictures which Y/N couldn’t ignore. Her gaze went through every picture, stopping in the cars she liked the most.

Dean couldn’t help but smile when he saw her looking at the pictures. Those cars meant a lot to him and his dad, they were the models they liked the most. And the woman who smelled like roses seemed to be daydreaming about them. He ran a hand through his hair, ignoring the feelings she started to develop towards her.

“Do you like them?” he asked staring at her.

She turned around and looked into his green eyes. At that time, she unconsciously forgot about all the paperwork she had to do.

“I like them all, but this one’s my favorite,” she said pointing at a picture where Dean smiled next to a black car. “Is it yours?” Y/N asked with a bright smile.

“Yeah, that’s my baby” Dean smiled staring at her. Looking at her eyes, her lips, her hair. Now being close to her, he noticed the scent of roses again. He breathed in and smirked. This woman made him feel things he had never felt, and, at the same time, it frightened him to be feeling so many things.

Autobiography

Hi, my name is Nick Watt. I was born and raised a few blocks from VCC King Edward Campus, where I now work as an Instructor for Collision and Refinishing. Growing up I had the typical Canadian childhood: extensive amounts of hockey, tennis, golf and playing with friends. When I was young, I was not the best student, but I always had an opinion and spoke my mind (this was not always welcome).

Once I started High school, I enrolled in the Mechanics program and found my groove. Throughout high school not only did I excel in this field, but I was excited to attend class. My High school Mechanics instructor became a strong role model for me, teaching me stocks, property investment and general life skills that I have carried to this day. I owe a lot to him for the level of teaching he provided me. I lost touch with him once he retired from teaching and if given the opportunity, I would love to sit him down and let him know how grateful I am for all his time and wisdom.  

In high school we had to complete a certain amount of work experience and I was unsure of the type of shop I wanted to go to as I had already spent time in a dealership as well as a oil and lube shop. My instructor signed me up for VCC Auto collision so I could see the collision side of the trade. I was very upset as I had no idea what a “Body Shop” was, I thought they just slapped mud on cars, However he assured me that it would be a valuable experience.

On my first day at VCC I joined a class that was in a pre-apprentice program and the instructor took me under his wing. I got to keep pace with the class, and he showed me what it is like to be a body man. I was hooked. I preferred this over mechanics immediately. When I got back to my class after my 2-week program I now had my path, so much in fact that 4 other students joined me in the next intake.

I started my career Jan of ‘03 and have never looked back. My relationship with the college remained following my graduation of my Red Seal Certificate - I even got the opportunity to represent VCC in Ottawa to assist in the development of a new Red Seal exam for Canada. I also become a certified BMW technician for the body Shop I was at. Throughout the following years I was flown around Canada and the U.S for training. This was another highlight in my career until I suffered a back injury which all but ended my ability to physically repair cars.

What was I going to do? I was at a low point but had to find a way to provide for my family.  My boss and I agreed that I would continue to complete training and mentor younger techs as well as run production for his shop. Once again, I had a new path and was off and limping. Although I loved what I was doing I knew this was a short-term solution and that I would need a more solidified long term plan. I realized becoming an instructor at VCC was my next step. I applied and patiently waited for the opportunity to become an instructor; this took another 4 years until the right time came along.

As of July 5, 2021, I officially started as an instructor, and it feels like this is what my career has been leading me to all along. My first class, an International foundation class, was nothing short of amazing. So, this now brings me to today, looking to find better ways to pass on the knowledge and skills that I gained over the last 20 years to the fresh faces starting out just the way I did back then. My goal is to produce excellent young engaged technicians who are excited to start their own journey in a trade that has provided so much for me over the years.

Do I need a motorcycle VIN number to get insurance in NC?

I live in North Carolina and I'm trying to get a license to purchase and operate a 150cc motorcycle. In North Carolina you must have a license for an automobile before you can get an endorsement for a motorcycle. Right now I'm learning how to drive a van so I can get a motorcycle endorsement. Before you can get a license for an automobile you must have proof of liability insurance (DMV form DL-123). Do I actually need a vehicle with a VIN number to get liability insurance? Or do I have to purchase non-owners insurance first and then switch it over to motorcycle insurance after I get an automobile license with motorcycle endorsement?

when she turned three, her mother enrolled her into tiny tots cheer camp and that shit was a wrap

ms.vasquez rarely got bianca to smile but, the second she waddled into that practice room, she was all smiles and sunshine

bianca ended up cheering from that point on, honing her strength and injecting her passion into the one sport no one would have expected her to be so in love with

while she was going to cheer practice, her father was also letting her in on the family business -- vasquez auto repair

by the end of freshman year, she was asked to join the varsity league, and she only continued to rise from there. even with her cheermates asking her about the rumors and avoiding her for their own safety, bianca refused to acknowledge the very sentiments that got her to where she was, so she just kept her mouth shut.

by the time graduation came along, she had earned a scholarship to uta to join their cheerleading division, but the scholarship did not over the cost of her tuition, so her parents, unfortunately, broke the news that she would not be able to attend

they soon gave her an ultimatum -  she could try to raise the money to go to the college and support herself, or she could continue working for the family business ( which she had despised, despite working there for as long as she cheered )

in a frantic attempt to steer far from her family’s legacy, she stumbled upon the casting call for superhuman and, what do you know, she landed the role!

even in the bright lights of hollywood, bianca is still able to maintain her stoic, silent charm that had scared yet won so many people over in her formative years.
