The Australian KOSA thing is fucking stupid. I think minors (under 13) shouldn't be on social media. This is not a hot take. However, asking for an entire ID is just another step in internet privacy being killed.
You don't like targeted ads? That sucks, they're gonna know where you live now. You wanna post controversial takes/things that could get you in trouble? Congrats! They can show up at your door, because it'll be easier to find you than ever
Do you like having privacy on the internet? Do you like your government not policing your every move? If so, you should be against this!

Heads up for politic-based rant:
Just realised that literally no Australian news site has made a peep about the under-16s social media ban. The bill got passed. The security risks are insane. And the bill is vague as fuck??? If I drop off the face of the earth it'll be because the government finally went and introduced ID-mandatory logins to all 'social media' sites. I am not connecting my ID to my online presence any more than I already have. I learned about this shit on Tumblr of all places because the media isn't talking about it.
If I end up only being reachable via AO3 then so be it because AO3 sure as hell won't allow whatever the fuck the government is trying to pull. If I have no access to any social media sites then so be it, because the Australian legislation defines Social Media as 'any online social network. An online social network is a website or app that allows a user to create and share content online, for example, Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. This often involves sharing personal information in comments and messages, and photos and videos'.
So. Yeah. That definition includes Discord, Tumblr, Xbox Live, Twitch, Reddit, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Steam, Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft etc. It's super fucking broad and the new legislation makes no move to narrow down their meaning because they don't want to. I swear to fuck if AO3 falls under that definition and they find it I will riot.
Not to mention, how exactly do they expect these kids to function online after they clear the age limit? Like are they just going to go 'hey this is the internet have fun we aren't explaining shit to you :)' and leave? There are already no online safety courses taught nationwide - hell, not even statewide where I am. What are they going to do??? Typequick and computer literacy were both dropped as subjects when I was in grade three. I've graduated highschool since then. What the fuck are we coming to as a country?

Something interesting I find with the “think of the children” crowd is that they really don’t think about them. As people at least.
Adults who whine about protecting children, but never put any effort in doing so. They make shitty bills and legislation that put more children in danger. Ban resources that had SAVED children’s lives. It’s never about protecting children, it’s about control.
It’s always the tearful adults who are focused on when it comes to “protecting children”, but never the children themselves.
I.e the group who is being affected.
We’re never told of how they feel about anything because why would it matter? They’ll just tell the middle-aged pricks that they are being stupid and should shut up.
Children are way more insightful than we give them credit for. If they are given the tools to express their emotions, they will.

They are trying to rush this into law without much debate within the next week so contact your Senators and Members here and tell them this will not work and should not vote for this and have a full debate without fast tracking.
fucking australia’s trying to get everyone to link their government id to their social media accounts else you cant use them anymore, the actual fuck is wrong with this country

Based on new article last night:
Social media companies can’t force you to enter your government ID/other sensitive ID, however they can make it very hard for you to use the site in the process. Forcing people into “teen” accounts or limiting usage.
Social media companies can however force the use of other ID such as drivers license or a biometric face scan, both/use of one are already required to change age on Instagram
Social media companies that fail to make a reasonable effort to remove under 16s will be fined ~$50 million AUD (roughly $33 million USD)
Young people will not be punished for failing to comply as of now, but a member APPARENTLY put forward a 13-16 age fine for breaking the law.
The transcript is still impossible to find on my end if someone could give me the link I would love that

Friendly reminder that
Australian KOSA passed.
Australians will have to enter government ID to access “social media” including YouTube as of 2026.
All under 16s are banned from “social media” no exceptions
Edited to add: while social media sites can’t force you to enter your gov ID they can request it and make it harder for you at access certain things in the meantime. Instagram already requests either a face scan or drivers license to change your age.
The most likely solution is a biometric face scan, which isn’t brilliant. But not as bad as it could be.
Privacy will always be an issue online, and without a doubt social media companies know far more than they should and do track your activities online.
According to albo (our prime minister) social media already knows if your under 16 as it already tracks you. It should be easy for them to “get rid” of these accounts. He is right in this to a point.
But linking all your social media to you is an issue for not only general but due to doxxing, blackmail, and outing of anyone who has to link their social media to their real identity.
I’m not against limiting social media for underage persons. But the age limit of 16, and the way they are doing it with no research, and no education in online safety before they turn 16, is a recipe for disaster

Update: They introduce it today and they plan to rush it into law within the next week with little to no debate!
Hey Aussies, do you want your real name and ID slapped on your tumblr account? If the answer is fuck no, our gov’s got a upcoming legislation for banning 16 year olds and under from social media even WITH parental consent. And by “Social Media”…
The code defines social media as electronic services that meet the following conditions:
The sole or primary purpose of the service is to enable online social interaction between two or more end users
The service allows end users to link to, or interact with, some or all other end users
The service allows end users to post material on the service
Such other conditions (if any) as are set out in the legislative rules.
So. You know. Just the entire fucking internet. They even named youtube as banned, god forbid kids out in the bush get access to LGBTQ+ communities online when they could be watching adds for sportsbet.
I am 100 per cent supportive of eliminating bullying and fake information from online platforms. The easiest way to do that is to be able to utilise existing laws, and the easiest way to do that is to ensure there are no fake accounts. Your digital, online life is your real life. If you want to make comments, that's fine, but it should be as you, as a verified account. This means everyone knows who it is that makes those comments, that you can be found and prosecuted under existing laws, just as you would if you express those opinions in a newspaper, for example, or you went on to a television station and said something similar.
Contact an Aussie senator about this shit. They’re trying to slide it under all the USpol news.

American mutuals. Just remember that you still can stop Kosa. I dont have as much power as im australian but you can protest, call your representatives, be publicly against it, sign petitions. Do whatever you can. Make sure when calling your reps to say that the other side will use it to their advantage, eg if you live in a more conservative state say that the left will use it to push their agenda and vice versa. Don’t immediately assume for the worst, there is still hope and they will only win if you just give up. Im here for you all

I'm not Australian but one of my mutuals @you-need-not-apply has been posting about the social media ban which is how I have become aware of it and so I thought I'd make a post about it, this is fucking scary stuff, similar to KOSA. More people need to be talking about this.

I’m not one to directly ask, but please, if you follow me or not
Make a post about the Australian KOSA/Australia social media ban/ASMB
Please. Even if you’re not Australian. It doesn’t have to be long just a line
If you can’t that’s fine no pressure.
But if you did one for Americans KOSA, can you please do one for us?

Just so y'all know
The Australian version of KOSA has passed through the Senate and in the later months of 2025 in Australia, it'll take effect there soon.
To those that aren't Australian, do anything you can to spread knowledge of it more online whether it be on this site, Bluesky, Tiktok, etc. To Australian citizens, do whatever you can to stop it by contacting your senators and the government to tell them on how this bill will do more harm than good.
Please get the word out globally!
