I probably took over 100 pictures out in the countryside today and then when I got home the sky over the street looked like this.

Lightning sprites, or red sprites, often occurring in tandem with lightning. They are short-lived electrical discharges that flash high above thunderstorms in the mesosphere layer of the atmosphere. (Photo by Stephen Hummel, McDonald Observatory, Texas, United States)

Extremely rare atmospheric phenomenon called rainbow bridge or circumhorizontal arc when the sun is at least 58º above horizon and ice crystals in clouds form rainbows.

The National Antarctic Scientific Center's Vernadsky station observed some interesting and unusual atmospheric phenomena.
White rainbow
A halo, which can form around a sun or moon.
Mirages where it looks like icebergs and islands float above the water
Clouds filled with ice crystals that give it a pearly look.

'Once-in-a-lifetime' photo — Perseid meteors, northern lights and rare glowing arc shine over 11th-century castle | Space
When photographer Josh Dury set out to photograph the peak of the Perseid meteor shower overnight on Aug. 12 and Aug. 13, little did he know he'd be treated to a truly special cosmic display.
The breathtaking image Dury captured shows not only Perseid meteors raining down through the sky but also northern lights and a rare atmospheric glow known as an SAR arc alongside the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies.
"To think that so much is going on in the astronomical scene that evening with the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies also visible, makes this definitely a once-in-a-lifetime photograph," Dury told Space.com in an email.
Dury chose 11th Century Corfe Castle as the setting for his image as he'd photographed from the location on May 10 during the epic G5 geomagnetic storm and captured some incredible scenes.  ...

On this day:
FIREBALLS
On May 24, 1931, in the North Atlantic Ocean, a freakish, flickering purple light illuminated the sea and sky, surrounding the SS Nova Scotia. There was no point of origin for the phenomenon.
On May 24, 1948, in Curepipe, Mauritius, a whirlwind and a fireball teamed up to destroy the hard-packed surface of a tennis court. The two-foot fireball passed through a wire fence between the football court and the tennis court, causing no harm until it landed, skidding over the surface and digging up a trench two feet wide, sixty feet long, and up to four inches deep. The ferruginous clay was tossed sixty feet high and fifty feet west of the court. A fifty-pound umpire chair was also lifted twenty feet upwards, where it broke apart in midair and landed in pieces on the east side of the court, opposite the surface material.
Also in 1948, famed astronomer Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of Pluto, reported three green fireballs over New Mexico.
In 1920, in Parkside, South Australia, a twelve-inch smoking ball of fire, shooting out glowing strands of electricity, hissed down from the sky, bounced along a cement porch floor and then up over the house next door, and crashed into a residence beyond, destroying it. In 1923, in Maryland, a scientist watched a balloon-size fireball moving seven feet above ground toward a tulip tree, where it exploded, knocking the bark off the tree and killing it. In 1961, in Minnesota, Richard Vogt was driving at night when a three-foot ball of fog fell from the sky and crashed into his vehicle, making it intolerably hot, cracking the windshield, and scorching the hood. In 1969, in Finland, a truck was struck by a fireball, which exploded upon impact, but did not damage the vehicle.

An astronaut took this photograph of the Aurora Australis in August 2017. At the time, the International Space Station was moving over the southern Indian Ocean towards the Great Australian Bight and Melbourne, Australia.

me ranting about clouds:
THIS HAS TO BE THE MOST UNBELEIVABLLY COINCIDENTAL THING THAT HAPPENED TODAY
OKAY SO A LITTLE CONTEXT- AROUND TWO WEEKS AGO I HAD A DREAM (more like a vague image of a picture) OF CLOUDS THAT LOOKS LIKE IT'S FORMING A CONE SHAPED CLOUD (almost to a lenticular cloud) AROUND A RADIO TOWER (funnily enough I live near one, but it's quite old and haven't been used for a looong time) AND THEN I WAS LIKE "Okay this feels like a message of some kind" BECAUSE ODDLY ENOUGH THE FOLLOWING DAY A LOT OF CLOUDS WERE STARTING TO FORM- EACH DAY WENT BY AND MORE LOW ALTITUDE CLOUDS START TO FORM DAY BY DAY I WAS GETTING SUSPICIOUS AND EXCITED ABOUT SEEING ANOTHER REALLY COOL PHENOMENA- I STAYED STRONG ABOUT THE VISION BECOMING REAL and today, when I went out shopping with my mother- somewhere around 5:30 I saw a faint iridescent cloud inside a thick and crowded amount of clouds. The iridescent was faint but flowy, similar to how an artist would use a thick brush and give a satisfying stroke of water color; Faint but majestic. I showed it to my mom and she said it looked lovely, we went inside the mall did shopping and left yadda yadda. And I heard the following in the live, broadcasted news: "Iridescent clouds" YOU DID NOT KNOW HOW MUCH I WAS SHOCKED AS HELL WHEN I HEARD THAT- MY IMPULSIVITY WON I YELLED LIKE A MADMAN AND STARTED ACTING FERAL (Of course my mother understood my excitement but some of my family members weren't pleased with my behavior- but still.) AND THEN A BEATIFUL FOOTAGE APPEARED OF A PILIUS IRIDESCENT CLOUD
THIS WAS TOO MUCH OF A COINCIDENCE TO BE TRUE- YOU DON'T HOW DISSAPOINTED AND PISSED I WAS WHEN I OVERLOOKED THE SUDDEN LOW ALITUDE CLOUDS THAT HAS BEEN SUSPICOUSLY APPEARING AND GROWING THROUGHOUT THE DAY- ALSO THE FACT THAT I WASN'T ABLE TO SEE IT THE TIME IT WAS FORMED (I won't see shit tmr bcs it was formed in a different area of the country >:C)
