Full color drawings commissioned by CodyMacArthurFett for Scipio Smith's fanfic SAPR . As you see, in his story Blake is transferring to Atlas, and Penny is transferring to Beacon.
"I can believe that I can do more in the Atlesian military than I ever could as a huntress."
— Blake
She had found Freedom, in every single way.
— describing Penny's Semblance and her journey
Should I even mention that I absolutely loved drawing these two? The first three Volumes of RWBY have such a special place in my heart, so I enjoyed going back to the old designs. And if Penny in Beacon uniform is not a new idea (after all, she expressed her wish to stay at Beacon), Blake going to Altas is a pretty fresh and unexpected take, at least for me. If you're interested in how it comes to this, go on and check the story!

Your Speech Outros are Improving, Sir!
Marrow Amin was among the first Faunas to attend Atlas Academy, and this fact was not lost on him. Initiation hadn't even started, and already Marrow had to deal with people staring, whispers behind his back, and the occasional scoff or sneer. It wasn't as bad as in Mantle, but that's not exactly a high bar.
Marrow's wolf tail drooped behind him. His tail was usually a dead giveaway for his emotions (something he hated whenever he played poker with his family), and right now, he was feeling overwhelmed. Even without everyone staring at him, Atlas Academy was the largest place he had ever been in. He has grown up in a small, poor fishing village on the edge of the Solitas tundra, and most of the people he lived with were Faunas escapees from the Dust mines.
"Why is he even here?" one student whispered, just loud enough for Marrow to hear.
His shoulders slumped. Why was he here? Sure, he had passed the prerequisite physical and written exams, but what did that prove? Maybe Marrow only made it in because of his Semblance, which was admittedly powerful.
No, no, I can't think like that. This is the best opportunity I have to pull my family out of poverty. I'm going to make it through, no matter how hard it was.
As Marrow slipped into the large auditorium for initiation, he began to feel a bit overwhelmed. So much noise, so many people, call the sets of eyes glancing and staring at him. He feels his tail tuck between his legs as he tried to steady his breathing.
He glanced up at the podium and saw Lieutenant General James Ironwood walk onto the stage. He didn't even need to say anything, the whole room became quiet as all eyes focused on him.
James Ironwood had become a widely talked about man, equally loved and hated, depending on who you ask. With him now holding the position as Headmaster of Atlas Academy and being poised to eventually become General of the Atlesian Military, he could be the first person in Atlas history to hold two seats at once. With him claiming the responsibility of Headmaster, he voted to allow Faunas to attend Atlas Academy and become fully fledged Specialists, and the motion passed. Atlas elites were in an uproar, and they called upon their cronies in the media to smear and tarnish Ironwood's reputation. Yet, despite the slander and backlash, James stood firm. This was the first year that Faunas students were allowed to attend freely.
James tapped the microphone, his tall frame towering over the podium that seemed almost comically small compared to him. He cleared his throat, and began to speak.
"Welcome to Atlas Academy. You are now among the few that qualified to attend this prestigous institution. However, your training has just begun. These next few years will push you to your absolute limits, both mentally and physically."
Marrow shifted as he listened to his words. James took a deep breath before continuing.
"But this is not without reason. You are taking on the vital, crucial role of being the first line of defense against Grimm. Your life, the lives of your fellow soldiers, and the lives of everyone else depend on all of you being the best Hunters possible. This is not an opportunity to seek cheap thrills. This is a solemn responsibility."
The young faunas glanced at his hands, trying to process the heavy responsibility he was taking on.
"However," James continued, his eyes filled with pride as a small smile crosses his face. "I see potential in this room. I see the next generation of soldiers, Hunters and heroes. I see people capable of holding the darkness at bay, of rising above evil, and keeping the peace, not just in Solitas, but in the world."
Marrow felt himself standing a bit taller, his tail wagging a bit as he felt...happy. It felt like he had gained James's approval, even if this was only a general message.
"Now, as some of you may have noticed, we have faunas students here for the first time," James started, adjusting his tie. "I will state this in no uncertain terms: we do not tolerate bigotry or division. We are facing a threat that destroys indiscriminately. The Grimm make no distinction between humans or faunas, they simply kill. If we divide ourselves over petty, meaningless differences, we will fall. Every student here has rightfully earned their position at Atlas Academy. Every student will have the same opportunities. You will all be serving under the same Atlas flag, and when all others see that flag, they should feel safe and protected, and they should know that we stand united!"
The room is silent, everyone trying to process the speech they just heard. James Ironwood awkwardly fiddled with the cuffs on his uniform as he waited for some kind of response.
"Right, uh...classes will begin at 0600 tomorrow," Ironwood ended, his voice suddenly becoming far less sure than he was in his speech.
Marrow slowly began clapping, his wolf tail wagging behind him. Another student, a human, joined alongside him, and another. Soon, the whole auditorium was applauding Lieutenant General James Ironwood. A small, awkward smile spread across James's face as he gave a small bow and exited the stage.
Knowing the kind of Headmaster Ironwood was, Marrow was feeling a lot more confident about these next few years.

Prologue 2 is out! This time we have our introduction to the smart and deadly Yale. I like her. She's cool.
I'm still new to AO3 so if there's a way to change these chapters to prologues that would be great to know but until then I guess I have no choice but to refer to them on there as chapters. Oh well.

Actually I WILL talk about Mai's seeming 'radicalisation'. With the upcoming comic, I can see why a lot of people are confused/caught offguard by Mai suddenly having a vested interest in reforming the Fire Nation's school curriculum.
Tumblr media
However, I don't think it's as much of a heelturn as one would believe at first glance.
Mai is a difficult character to pinpoint on some levels, particularly due to her upbringing which stripped her of a lot of her self expression. I think most of the fandom underestimates the trauma and effect of Mai's upbringing. I elaborate on it here.
However, the long and short of it is that Mai was not encouraged to question, criticise or, god forbid, rebel against her enviornment. To the point where her parents scared her with stories of spirits that would kidnap her if she misbehaved.
Tumblr media
Ukano's involvement in politics and relatively high status should also be taken into account. Mai would have grown up being strongly encouraged to conform to her father's beliefs and go along with his politics.
Mai : My mother said I had to keep out of trouble. We had my dad's political career to think about.
We've seen the propaganda and indoctrination of the Fire Nation school system, how it uses misinformation in its curriculum and how it punishes deviance.
Tumblr media
Most fire nation children won't have the tools to find the cruelty and danger in the philosophy of the Fire Nation. Zuko had to get banished from the country to even start his deconstruction. And he had Iroh at his side to guide him.
It's not shocking that Mai would not be able to see the flaws of the Fire Nation. Despite this, she still shows no attachment to the Nation's cause, either. In fact, she actively refused to take part in the war effort when she thought she could get away with it.
Tumblr media
I don't think Mai had much sympathy to the other nations, nor will I claim she secretly harboured anti imperialistic sentiment. I simply want to state the fact that Mai was, from a young age, forced to do things she didn't want to do and conditioned by multiple parties, to accept this. Mai has been trained to be passive, with only the method of passive aggressiveness and gloominess to defend herself.
I think after the fall of Ozai's rule and the slow restructuring of the Nation, Mai got more freedom in her life. Ukano's political role diminished, so Mai was allowed to think for herself. She gets to discover the world more and develop her own thoughts and ideals, rather than the ones she'd been forced to conform to.
This line in the upcoming comic seems to confirm my thoughts:
Tumblr media
Mai's upbringing is the underground and darkness. She was never given an alternative or agency in her life. And thanks to Zuko, she was able to see and experience a different world than the one she was brought up with. She is able to help to try and achieve it.
Initially, Mai is angry at Zuko's joining of team Avatar. She feels betrayed and upset that he did not talk to her in person, even if it was to protect her. And yet, she saves him. While I believe that most of her motivation was genuinely out of love for Zuko. But she also, ekther inadvertently or deliberately made the choice between Azula and Zuko. Between the two potential duture leaders of the Nation.
And she chose Zuko. Who is not only the boy she loves, but also the boy who can heal her nation.
Tumblr media
There is an argument to be made about how Mai represents the Fire Nation itself and its relationship to Zuko, but that is a topic for another day.
The theme of Mai caring for the future of the Fire Nation can be seen expanding in the comics. As 99% of the fandom will tell you, the comics have their flaws, but I do enjoy their handling of Mai for the most part.
I think it's interesting that we are shown that Mai not only wants Zuko to be Fire Lord, but for him to be a good Fire Lord.
We see her dissapointed in Zuko secretly meeting with Ozai. At first glance, what she says to Zuko is that she is dissapointed in him keeping secrets from her, which is understandable, since the last time he kept a secret from her led to him joining the opposite side of a war.
However, with her next appearance, we see that Mai may have had another concern relating to Zuko's communing with Ozai. When Ty Lee informs her of Zuko also enlisting Azula's help, Mai exclaims 'so he really is turning into his father', which seems to denote that Mai has a distaste for Ozai and his rule, whether that be from the begining, or recently acquired.
Tumblr media
Mai also criticises Zuko's callous and controlling restrictions over the frightened townspeople. This serves to further cement the idea of Mai becoming disillusioned with the similarly inclined authority figures of her past. Authority figures who were a symptom of the Fire Nation's utilitarian and imperialistic system. We see this disdain manifesting in its full force in the teasers for the upcoming comic.
Tumblr media
I think people tend to not realise how restricted in her self expression and thoughts Mai was, despite all the puzzle pieces being laid out for us in the show.
Mai has gone through a very quick and yet realistic episode of character growth in my opinion. Not unlike a lot of people raised in heavily Conservative and restrictive households who peel off later in life, she's settling into her own mindset and motivations.
Ans I don't think it's an unrealistic idea for Mai to want to help change the education system. The Fire Academy for girls is where she met Azula, and as an all girl school alumni, I can tell you first hand how toxic and confining these enviornments can be.
While Mai may not be seen as a particularly empathetic or kind person (though I think this interpretation is flawed), she can sympathise with the young girls who will be placed in the shoes of her younger self.
She can want to not see these kids go through what she, Ty Lee AND Azula did.
Tumblr media
[The panels of Mai glancing between the stifling interior of the school and the open window and choosing to go outside and lead the Nation's youth outside... ugh]
Not only is this a rather logical progression for Mai's character, in my opinion, but it also feels like a very big 'healing your inner child' moment for Mai. Since she was not really seemingly allowed to be a child, as most children in the Fire Nation appeared to have such restrictions placed on them.
I don't think it's much of a stretch of the imagination that Mai would want to have at least a small part in dismantling the system that harmed her and so many other children of the nation.
She is a young woman now, she has grown from the oversheltered, apathetic teen she was in the show. She has been able to make her own informed opinions about the state of the nation, has been able to hone her trauma into determination. And it seems we're going to see the fruits of this development in "Ashes of the Academy".
I have very high hopes for the upcoming comic, since what we've seen of it appears to make a compelling story, one I relate to deeply, as well as a good study of Mai, a character I find often misinterpreted by the fandom.

YOOOO DEMA YOU LIKE ARCANE???!! omg who's your favorite character??? and favorite moment(s) from s1??? (and fav ship too 👀 👀) will you draw for Arcane in the future???? (peak show with peak art =perfection, just saying)
Anon, you have the. Best. Timing. Ever. I literally just finished an Arcane artstyle study with Katara of the Undercity as a subject!
Tumblr media
My favorite Arcane character is and forever shall be Ekko (best boy). Other faves are Viktor (chronic illness baby) and Jinx (trauma gremlin).
As for the S1 scene... Besides the finale and that breathtaking Guns for Hire sequence? The Ekko/Jinx fight from ep 7. It broke me. (And turned me into a Timebomb shipper. Which was arguably worse.)
#dema answers#atla#avatar the last airbender#atla fanart#katara#atla art#arcane fanart#arcane netflix#arcane#atla katara#katara fanart#katara of the southern water tribe#Except here it's#Katara of the Undercity#Because I say so#And because an Arcane AU would be so fun to think about#arcane au#Katara and Sokka would be from the Undercity. Which has pretty intense connotations when you realize that means Kya was killed by Enforcers#But I digress#Sokka is an engineering genius whose dream is to study at the Academy and change science as we know it. At the same time he's a pragmatist.#He knows that's all they ever will be: dreams. So instead of chasing useless wishes he focuses on using his talents to help his community.#Katara is all about the social cause. She's a natural leader who would do anything to help those in need. Which gets her in trouble often.#She would never cross the line like Jet and so many of their fellow Zaunites do—she wants peace and prosperity for her people.#But that doesn't mean she's afraid of having to fight for their rights. On the contrary.#I think she and Sokka would create some Firelights-esque community. They bring people together and care for them.#Even weird tattooed kids with an odd connection to the Arcane itself.#Zuko is a former Heir from Piltover. His father holds a seat in the Council and is not afraid of underhanded tactics to gain more power.#Ozai banished Zuko from his home with the condition that he could return only if he brought an end to a rebellion in the Undercity...#...and got rid of an object of great power that would only bring destruction upon his people.#(But nobody ever told Enforcer Zuko that this supposed great weapon that the people of the Undercity stole...was a kid.)

Really hoping that this scene is of Azula standing up to a bully and not her being a bully. Her facial expression indicates that it might be the former, since she looks angry, but only time will tell. It'd be a great comparison though if it's the former, since it seems like Kiyi also stands up to a bully in this comic:
Tumblr media
Showing that Azula and Kiyi share some good qualities would be nice to see, and a breath of fresh air from this franchise constantly painting Azula in a bad light all the time.

The academic year often begins in September... That's how I came up with the idea of little Weiss hugging Winter goodbye before she leaves for Atlas Academy.
It must've been the first time Schnee sisters had to be apart for so long. So I imagine Weiss took it hard and didn't want her big sis to go 🥺 And if Winter is 17 here, then Weiss would be about 10 in my view.
You can get access to my exclusive RWBY illustrations by either subscribing to certain tiers on Boosty (it's just like Patreon thing), or by purchasing a specific post.

Aaand since I got 5 paid subscribers on Sun tier, they will suggest the character for the next monthly drawing! Even I don't know what to expect, so let's see 😄 🍂🍁🍂 October RWBY fanart poll 🍂🍁🍂

No, it’s no development if Mai—who is known for her specific traits such as her apathy—suddenly starts acting completely differently, just because the plot takes place a few years after her first introduction.
Either you show me how she changed within the story, or, if this would take too long, with a brief retrospective. But the reason has to be shown or at least mentioned. This is still storytelling and not the real world where you run into an old acquaintance after years, notice they’ve changed, and you’re just like: Oh, they must’ve gained a more positive attitude, good for them. She is a character of a TV show, written with specific traits.
From what I’ve seen, Mai in the new comic is introduced as just always being anti-imperialist and loving—we all just completely misunderstood her, right?
And, honestly, I would’ve been happy for her, if she had undergone real character growth, learning to show love and affection while gaining strong beliefs in anti-imperialism. That would actually make for a compelling story I would love to read.
But no, this time, it’s not only retconning past criticisms through the ATLA comics. The creators are acting as though she has always been this way. 🙄 Not to mention that the story itself doesn’t make any sense. And, as always, there are the stans who are acting as if the characters are real people, and there is no storytelling needed... This is indeed a phenomenon.
