so if you care so much about life, do you support the palestinians who are actively going through a genocide right now? what about the sudanese, who are also experiencing a genocide? or congolese…which, you probably guessed it: also going through a genocide. do you support them? have you done anything to help?
better yet, have you done anything to help anyone not in-utero? participating in community efforts to help children and mothers, helping the poor, etc?
First of all, being pro-life simply means being against abortion. We all know this. You don't have to be in support of anything life-saving to be against life-ending. However, there is an entire movement dedicated to consistently advocating for life and opposing violence called the Consistent Life Ethic (CLE) movement, and it's been around since the 1970s.
Juli Loesch is a big founder of that movement. But Carol Crossed is also a pillar. I would say Dan Berrigan, Dorothy Day, and Dolores Huerta were also all in that movement. So is my mentor, John Cavanaugh-O'Keefe.
Some historic groups of the movement include Pro-Lifers for Survival, National Youth Pro-Life Coalition, Common Ground of Upstate NY, and the Seamless Garment Network. Current groups include Consistent Life Network, Feminists Choosing Life of NY, New Wave Feminists, and Rehumanize International.
Rehumanize, in particular, is VERY pro-Palestine. I just went to their conference, where they had a Nakba survivor speak. Their magazine, Life Matters Journal, has also posted many articles in support of Palestine.
I already made posts about Palestine here, here, and here. Personally, I think in order to be consistently opposed to genocide in the womb, I think we must oppose the violence in Palestine. I think there's lots of other good reasons to oppose zionism and settler-colonialism in general, but specifically for pro-lifers, we should see abortion by bomb as just as evil as abortion by other weapons.
What have I done to help? Here's me (the pro-lifer interviewed), marching and speaking out nationally against the genocide in Palestine. I've gone to multiple marches in DC, Atlanta, and Chicago for Palestine, put my body on the line, and used my platform to call for an end to genocides across the world. I've signed petitions and made calls to my representatives. I've raised awareness and shared the horrors. I've witnessed and grieved with the people.
I definitely do solidarity and charity work outside of pro-life activism. I was a bike marshal in Black Lives Matter, a tenant organizer for the COVID Rent Strike, I helped start a mutual aid effort in which we taught kids to build bicycles in exchange for a free bike, and I refurbished broken bicycles to give out for free to poor people who needed transportation to their jobs. I also generally advocate for policies I believe would help improve parenting.
And you would know all of this, had you taken the time to actually read through my blog. I post the FAQs and table of contents for a reason. Hope this was informative tho.

So would you say you're somebody that believes Boston, Phoenix, Denver, Atlanta, Honolulu, Boise, Little Rock, Indianapolis, Providence, Des Moines, Cheyenne, Jackson MS, Charleston WV, Columbus OH, Columbia SC, Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City (yes I try to check which state capitals were also their state's largest city) is the better model for a state capital? Largest population isn't the sole criteria about New York since also it's the state's business hub and arts & entertainment hub too.
Yes. I think it's better on democratic principles:
it allows the largest number of state residents (especially poorer and working-class residents) to directly lobby, petition, or protest their government in the same city where they live - rather than having to take a long trip.
likewise, when it comes to state legislators, it hopefully allows the largest number to come from the ranks of the poor and the working-class, because they don't have to bear the increased burdens of commuting or establishing two residences.
similarly, even for voters and legislators who come from outside the city, choosing the largest city for the capital generally means better transportation network connections, which makes for an easier commute.
finally, it hopefully means that by making the problems of the biggest city the problems of the state government when it comes to stuff like transportation, housing, education, public utilities and services, public safety, etc. that there's more of an incentive to do something about them.
Also, I think the historic reasons for state capitals which weren't the extant largest city at time of statehood usually boil down to rural dislike of the big city, which I don't consider a valid reason for important constitutional decisions.

Looking at Atlantic Station 25 years after the EPA analysis that gave it life

Since Atlantic Station has a 300-unit AMLI apartment tower under construction, let's review a bit of its history.
25 years ago, Jacoby Development undertook the redevelopment of a 138-acre steel plant called Atlantic Steel (founded in 1901 as Atlanta Hoop Company to make cotton bale ties & barrel hoops, it grew into Atlantic Steel Company which lasted from 1915 till 1998).
In addition to needing Brownfield pollution remediation, the site needed an essential transportation ingredient -- better connectivity to Midtown by way of a new 17th Street bridge over the interstate.
But there was a problem: because Atlanta didn't meet federal Clean Air Act standards for air pollution between 1998 and 2002, according to EPA regulations, federal money couldn't be used to build the bridge. Which left the Atlantic Station project dead in the water. It was bridge or bust.
But Jacoby found a work around. They could bypass the EPA ban if they could prove that the redevelopment qualified this was a project that provided clean air benefits.
So throughout 1999, the EPA analyzed the expected air quality benefit for this project, compared to an equivalent one built elsewhere. Their analysis showed that it would produce significantly less air pollution if built here rather than elsewhere due to the transit access (including free shuttle service to Arts Center MARTA) and walkability. It worked -- the bridge was funded, and the cleanup work for the development commenced.
Approximately $167 million of the $250 million needed for the Brownfield cleanup, plus site preparation and infrastructure, was provided by a Tax Allocation District (TAD). Atlantic Station opened in 2005.
Notably, the EPA documents from 1999 mentioned that the shuttle service should at some point "switch to a fixed transit system (e.g. light rail)" which "should connect with a more extensive transit network that could serve much of the area west of 1-753-85 and possibly provide a connection to Cobb County...the 17th Street Bridge would be designed such that it can accommodate future rail, potentially connecting to the MARTA Arts Center Station."
25 years later, we still have no plans for rail. Maybe in another 25?

So you have your first orbital ring!
It's around the equator and you can bring payloads up from the handful of countries lying on or near enough the equator. From here, you can already launch stuff into space for virtually free, you've got tons of clean power at your fingertips, and transportation between any of those regions is now under an hour and a half. Badass!
But you want to go to New York. How the hell do you get from New York? Hop on a plane from Ecuador? Nah, we can do better. We can build a ring that goes from Atlanta, to New York, to London, to Paris, and more. One more ring and our transportation network grows!
This is a bit tough, though. Our ring runs around the equator, so we can only launch things into equatorial orbits. But the ring we want is around 50 degrees away from the equator. That means we need to launch stuff at a pretty severe angle away from where we start!
Now, we have options. We can build a launch facility with a clear path at the correct inclination, and send up rockets to build it like we did for the first ring, but that's expensive; you just spent $500B on this first one, and we're just going to ignore it? Hell no.
Okay, so the next option: launch from the first ring to an orbit 5km up (where we'll build the next one), then change our inclination and we're all set! Only one small rocket burn, and it's outside our atmosphere; no greenhouse gasses for us! Alright, small problem. Turns out that that "small rocket burn" takes damn near as much fuel as it would take to launch from the ground, and cost almost as much.
Why did we build this stupid ring?
Alright, let's think about this. Inclination changes are more expensive when you're going faster. If we can somehow slow down our orbit, we can do it for way less fuel! If we just launch off our ring at a slower speed, we ... will crash into the Earth. But the further you orbit the Earth, the slower your orbit needs to be 👀
So, let's shoot way out, change our inclination there, then come back down to our new orbit. How far? Three times as far as the moon.
It'll take 35 days to go all that way and come back, but it's gotta be worth it, right? Yes. Very much yes.
Let's say you're launching the SpaceX Starship on their Super Heavy lift vehicle, and you want to be able to reuse it all. You will burn 4600 TONNES of fuel to lift 100 tonnes into our orbit. And, because the earth rotates, you only get one launch window per day. Optimistically, that will cost you $20M per launch.
But instead, let's take that same Starship, launch it from our orbital ring at 11km/s (enough to send us well past the moon) for virtually free -- just using our solar power -- and then do those inclination and circularization burns. How much fuel do we need? About 1200 tonnes of fuel. Except that same fuel? It can now carry 500 fucking tonnes!
One spacecraft, fully reusable, and a bunch of fuel; you've got yourself a way to turn your single orbital ring into two. And then four. And then eight. All for a fraction of the cost your first ring took. Plus, you've got abundant solar power now; all that fuel can be generated by sucking CO2 out of the atmosphere and turning it into methane, to be burnt in space, away from our planet.
The whole planet -- and the solar system -- is at your fingertips now.
