Advice to One Who Feels Irredeemable After Major Sins

Did you know, sister? The Muslim is not allowed to despair in the mercy of Allah.

Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.

—Qur'an (Yusuf) 12:87

As for suicide, you are correct. This is categorically forbidden.

And do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction.

—Qur'an (al-Baqarah) 2:195

So glad tidings to the believers, who know they have a merciful Lord who forgives them! :)

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

—Qu'ran (az-Zumar) 39:53

I was listening to a lecture by a student of knowledge not too long ago and he mentioned something that I found amazing, regarding the devil's deception:

He is the one who, when it's time to commit a sin, whispers to you, "It's okay—we'll just repent for it later!"

However, once you've committed the sin, he pulls a pikachu face and makes you think, "Oh no, what have I done?! How will Allah ever forgive me for this disgusting act of transgression I've committed?! I can never be forgiven!"

And so in this way, he traps you into a mindset that ensures you will never turn to Allah and be forgiven, because you don't ask for it. SO many ayat and ahadith explain to us how Allah is only waiting for his slaves to turn to him. That is the only delay. Forgiveness is assured, the hold up is just in our turning to Allah.

And don't think for a second you're the only one who has gone through what you're going through, or sinned as you have. Indeed it is in human nature to sin, and the sins of desires are the easiest of all for us, because of the inclinations inherent in each of us.

With that said, just turn to Allah. :) It doesn't matter how ashamed you feel—in fact, it's good to feel regret since that helps to fuel a sincere repentance. But what makes you delay in seeking forgiveness? Do you think Allah doesn't already know what you've done? Of course he does. So repent to Him and show your sincerity in coming to the right path.

And this isn’t really me, I just feel that way because I feel so impure.

It is okay to feel regret; it is not okay to despair, or to feel that your mistakes define who you are. They do not.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The adulterer is not a believer while he is committing adultery. The drinker of wine is not a believer while he is drinking wine. The thief is not a believer while he is stealing. The plunderer is not a believer while he is plundering and the people are looking to him.”

In another narration, the Prophet said, “And he is not a believer while he is killing.”

—Sahih al-Bukhari 2343, Sahih Muslim 57

I'm sharing this to draw your attention to the wording of the hadith, specifically (which I've emphasized for your benefit). While you were sinning, you may have been impure, yes, but you are not currently sinning, alhamdulillah. You are begging Allah for forgiveness, and this is something the believer does and the believer is pure.

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "All of the children of Adam are sinners, and the best sinners are those who repent."

—Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2499

So the condition of the believer is like that.

It’s gotten to the point where salah isn’t even helping.

Another trick of the Shaiytaan. He hopes to distract you and cause you enough hopelessness that you turn away from Salah, which would be a greater sin than the one you're discussing in this post.

Let me repeat that: LEAVING OFF SALAH IS A GREATER SIN THAN ZINA.

'Abdullah bin Buraidah narrated that his father said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.'"

—Sunan Ibn Majah 1079

Salah will help 100%, you just have to keep at it so Shaiytaan can see that his antics aren't working. Who is more truthful? Shaiytaan, the consummate liar and enemy of the believers, or Allah, The Most High?

"Verily, Salah restrains (oneself) from shameful and unjust deeds…"

—Qur'an (al-'Ankabut) 29:45

You went on to mention:

I just feel like I’ve failed as a Muslim and I’ve failed in life.

As mentioned above, the Muslim is the one who turns to Allah again and again. So do that. You are not your past. You are what you do about it. So turn to Allah and He will forgive you. We have countless ahadith and ayat about Allah forgiving MUCH worse than what you've done.

Even to Fir'aun, who is among the worst of the people in all of creation, who will be in the depths of the Hellfire, Allah sent his noble prophet Musa (alayhisalaam)—to do what?

"And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allah]."

—Qur'an (Taha) 20:44

Subhanallah, a great Prophet was sent to Fir'aun so that he might repent for his sin of associating himself as a partner with Allah. And if Fir'aun had not been arrogant and accepted the message, begging Allah for forgiveness, Allah would have forgiven even him!

So give yourself a little perspective. It is not the end of the world. Yes, it's a major sin and you fell into it. Many, many, many people do. Upon us is to turn to Allah and ask for forgiveness with a sincere heart, to not return to the sin, and to busy ourselves with goodness instead.

عن أبي أُمامة قال: قِيلَ: يا رسولَ اللهِ أي الدُّعاء أسمَع؟ قال: جوفُ الليلِ الآخر ، ودُبر الصلواتِ المكتوبات. رواه الترمذي

Abu Umama said that Allah’s Messenger was asked which supplication is most readily listened to, and replied: What is offered in the latter part of the depth of the night , and after the prescribed prayers.

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ مَنْ سَأَلَ اللَّهَ الْجَنَّةَ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالَتِ الْجَنَّةُ اللَّهُمَّ أَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ ‏.‏ وَمَنِ اسْتَجَارَ مِنَ النَّارِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالَتِ النَّارُ اللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْهُ مِنَ النَّارِ ‏

Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said:

"Whoever asks Allah (s.w.t) Paradise three times, Paradise says: 'O Allah, admit him into Paradise', and whoever seeks refuge from the Fire three times, the Fire says: 'O Allah, save him from the Fire.'"

Reading the Books of Sayyid Qutb

Do you advise the youth to read Sayyid Quṭb's books, and what is your opinion on Shaykh Rabīʿs books about Sayyid Quṭb, especially since some warn against them? هل تنصح الشباب بقراءة كتب سيد قطب وما هو قولكم في كتب الشيخ ربيع في سيد قطب وخاصة أن البعض يحذر منها؟ Sayyid Quṭb is considered a literary figure. He lived in disbelief for eleven years, سيد قطب يعتبر أديباً من الأدباء مكث مع الالحاد إحدى عشرة سنة then Allah, the Sublime and Exalted, guided him. ثم هداه الله سبحانه وتعالى، هداه الله سبحانه وتعالى He did not sit with al-ʿulamāʾ (ie: the scholars); ولم يجالس العلماء؛ he relied on his own fikr (ie: thoughts). اعتمد على فكره، He is considered a literary figure among those whom the verse of Allah, the Almighty, applies: {And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them; Do you not see that they roam in every valley and that they say what they do not do? - Except those who believe, do righteous deeds, remember Allah often, and defend themselves after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned} (26:224-227). فهو يعتبر أديباً من الأدباء ممن يصدق عليه وعلى أمثاله قول الله عز وجل: " وَالشُّعَرَاءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ الْغَاوُونَ *أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهُمْ فِي كُلِّ وَادٍ يَهِيمُونَ *وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ *إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَانْتَصَرُوا مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا وَسَيَعْلَمُ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا أَيَّ مُنقَلَبٍ يَنقَلِبُونَ ". So I ask the questioner: Have you read the entire “Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr”? فأنا أسأل السائل: أأنت قرأت كله؟، Have you read the entire “Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī”? أأنت قرأت كله؟، Have you read the entire “Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim”? أأنت قرأت كله؟، Have you read the entire “Musnad Aḥmad”? أأنت قرأت كله؟، Have you read the entire “Sunan Abū Dāwūd”? أأنت قرأت كلها؟، Have you read the entire “Jāmīʿ at-Tirmiḏī”? أأنت قرأت كله؟، Have you read the entire “Sunan al-Nasāʿī”? أأنت قرأت كلها؟، Or is it (only) after Sayyid Quṭb (that you will read those)? أم بعد سيد قطب؟!، Some people have become extremists in takfīr (ie: declaring Muslims as unbelievers) just by reading Sayyid Quṭb's books because of his frequent mention of “al-Ṭaġūt” and “al-Ṭaġūt.” بعض الناس أصبح بسبب قراءته في كتب سيد قطب أصبح من جماعة التكفير!!، بسبب نهجه وإكثاره من (الطاغوت)، و(الطاغوت)، Yes, we say: al-Ṭaġūt; but many times, we do not mean that this (Ṭaġūt) is outside the religion of Islām. نعم إننا نقول: الطاغوت؛ ولكن في كثير من الأوقات لا نعني أنه خارج من دين الإسلام. Therefore, I do not recommend reading the books of Sayyid Quṭb, فأنا لا أنصح بقراءة كتب سيد قطب، nor the books of Muḥammad al-Ġazzālī, ولا بقراءة كتب محمدٍ الغزالي، nor the books of Muḥammad Quṭb, ولا بقراءة كتب محمد قطب، nor the books of Zaynab al-Ġazzālī. ولا بقراءة كتب زينب الغزالية، Brothers, read the books of the Sunnah; يا إخواننا اقرؤوا كتب السنة؛ the book “Kitāb al-Tawḥīd” on the names and attributes of Allah by Ibn Khuzaymah, كتاب في الأسماء والصفات لابن خزيمة، “al-Sunnah” by Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim, لابن أبي عاصم، “al-Sharīʿah” by al-Ājurrī, للآجري، “Sharḥ al-Sunnah” by al-Lālikāʿī, للالكائي، “al-Sunnah” by Muḥammad b. Naṣr al-Marwazī, لمحمد بن نصر المروزي، the book “al-Īmān” by al-Qāsim b. Sallam, كتاب للقاسم بن سلام، and so on from the kutub ʿulamāʾnā al-mutaqaddimīn (ie: books of our earlier scholars). وهكذا من كتب علماءنا المتقدمين Allah has preserved His religion: {Indeed, it is We who sent down the ḏikr (the Qurʾān) and indeed, We will be its guardian} (15:9). فالله قد حفظ دينه: " إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْر وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ ". I do not declare Sayyid Quṭb an unbeliever; ولست أكفر سيد قطب؛ however, I say that his books should not be relied upon, ولكن أقول: إنه لا يعتمد عليه في كتبه، and may Allah reward our brother Rabīʿ b. Hādī, may Allah preserve him, who has advised and clarified the deviations and misguidances in the books of Sayyid Quṭb, and all praise is due to Allah. وجزى الله أخانا ربيع بن هادي حفظه الله تعالى خيراً فقد نصح وبين ما في كتب سيد قطب من الزيغ والضلال والحمد لله. Uqbah bin Amir رضي الله عنه said: I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ "How can salvation be achieved?" He replied, "Control your tongue, keep to your house, and weep over your sins."

"A man asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about lost items. So he said: 'Make a public announcement about it for one year. Remember its string, its contained, and its sack. Then use it, and if its owner comes then give it to him.' So he said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah! What about the stray sheep?' He said:'Take it, for it is either for you, your brother, or the wolf.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What about stray camel?'" He said: "Then the Prophet (ﷺ) got angry until his cheeks became red or his face became red. He said: 'What concern is it of yours? It has its feet and its water reserve until it reaches its owner.'"

Invocation For Aid From Allah.

O My Lord, help me and do not help anyone against me. Support me and do not support anyone against me. Remove harm from me and all plots against me and do not allow anyone to plot against me. Guide me and make it easy for me to follow the correct guidance. Aid me over those who transgress against me. My lord, make me ever-grateful to You, one who remembers You often, ever-fearful of You, ever-obedient to You, ever-humble to You, often supplicating and returning to You. My Lord, accept my repentance, wash my sin, answer my supplications, make me firm in establishing the proof, guide my tongue to always speak the truth, guide my heart and remove any resentment, jealousy or treachery that resides in my chest. ALLAHUMA AMIIN.
