Should You Take a Personal Loan for Fertility Treatments?
Fertility treatments can be life-changing but often come with a hefty price tag. For many individuals and couples, the cost of IVF, egg freezing, surrogacy, or other assisted reproductive technologies can run into thousands of dollars. If you do not have immediate savings or insurance coverage, a personal loan could be a viable financing option. However, is it the right financial decision?
This guide explores the benefits, risks, and considerations of taking a personal loan for fertility treatments and how to make an informed choice.
Understanding the Cost of Fertility Treatments
Before deciding on a personal loan, it's essential to understand the expenses involved in fertility treatments. Some common procedures and their approximate costs include:
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) – $12,000 to $25,000 per cycle
Egg Freezing – $6,000 to $15,000
Surrogacy – $90,000 to $150,000
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) – $500 to $4,000 per attempt
These costs vary based on location, medical needs, and additional services like medications or genetic testing.
Can a Personal Loan Help Cover Fertility Costs?
A personal loan is an unsecured loan that allows you to borrow money for various personal expenses, including medical treatments. Here’s how it can help with fertility expenses:
Quick Access to Funds – A personal loan provides fast financing without long waiting periods.
No Collateral Required – Unlike home or car loans, a personal loan does not require assets as security.
Fixed Interest Rates and Repayments – Predictable EMIs make budgeting easier.
Flexible Loan Amounts – You can borrow based on your fertility treatment needs.
Pros of Taking a Personal Loan for Fertility Treatments
1. Immediate Financial Relief
Since fertility treatments can be time-sensitive, a personal loan ensures you don’t have to delay procedures due to lack of funds.
2. No Need to Liquidate Savings
A personal loan allows you to preserve your emergency savings and investments while still affording fertility treatments.
3. Lower Interest Rates Compared to Credit Cards
Using a credit card for fertility treatment can lead to higher interest rates (often over 20%). A personal loan, on the other hand, typically offers interest rates between 10-15%.
4. Improves Credit Score with Timely Payments
Repaying a personal loan on time can enhance your credit history, making it easier to access future credit.
Cons of Taking a Personal Loan for Fertility Treatments
1. Debt Burden
Taking a personal loan means committing to monthly repayments, which can impact your financial stability, especially if treatments require multiple cycles.
2. Interest Costs Over Time
Even with lower interest rates, the total repayment amount can be significantly higher than the actual fertility treatment cost.
3. Approval Challenges Based on Credit Score
If your credit score is low, you may face higher interest rates or loan rejections.
4. Alternative Financing May Be Better
Some fertility clinics offer payment plans, and employer benefits or grants may help reduce out-of-pocket expenses.
Factors to Consider Before Taking a Personal Loan for Fertility Treatments
1. Compare Loan Offers
Different lenders offer varying interest rates, tenures, and loan terms. Research options from banks, credit unions, and online lenders to find the best deal.
2. Assess Your Repayment Capacity
Ensure that you can manage the loan EMIs comfortably along with your other financial commitments.
3. Check for Special Medical Loans
Some lenders provide specialized medical loans that may offer lower interest rates and flexible repayment options compared to standard personal loans.
4. Look for Grants or Employer Benefits
Certain organizations provide financial assistance or fertility treatment coverage as part of employee benefits. Check with your employer or fertility clinics for such options.
5. Emergency Fund Consideration
Before borrowing, ensure you still have an emergency fund for unforeseen expenses, including complications in treatment.
Alternatives to Personal Loans for Fertility Treatments
If a personal loan is not the right fit, consider these alternatives:
Fertility Clinic Payment Plans – Some clinics allow you to pay in installments.
Medical Credit Cards – Healthcare-specific credit cards may offer interest-free financing for a set period.
Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) – These accounts allow you to use pre-tax dollars for medical expenses.
Family Assistance – If comfortable, borrowing from family could be a lower-cost option.
Grants and Nonprofit Support – Some organizations offer grants for couples struggling with infertility expenses.
Conclusion: Is a Personal Loan the Right Choice for Fertility Treatments?
A personal loan can be a practical way to finance fertility treatments, but it is essential to consider your financial health before committing. If you can afford the monthly repayments and secure a loan with a reasonable interest rate, it can help you access treatments without financial stress. However, exploring alternative financing options, such as employer benefits, payment plans, and grants, may help reduce overall debt burden.
Careful financial planning ensures that while you invest in your future family, you also maintain long-term financial stability.

Molly Redden at HuffPost:
Wesley Bell, a St. Louis prosecutor who is mounting a formidable Democratic primary challenge against Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.), is campaigning as someone who will produce more tangible results for the district while sharing many of her same left-leaning values. But one line on Bell’s political resume is at odds with his promise to champion a progressive agenda. In 2006, Bell managed the campaign of a conservative Republican running for the same seat Bell is seeking today. The candidate, Mark J. Byrne, ran as a fierce abortion opponent and gun rights crusader. “I intend to protect the rights of the unborn,” his campaign website read. “I believe that there is no greater job for elected representatives.”
He ultimately lost to incumbent Rep. William Lacy Clay Jr., who remained in office until Bush successfully challenged him in 2020. “Nearly 20 years ago, Wesley helped a longtime friend by volunteering with his campaign, in spite of their differences in political affiliations and positions on many issues,” said Anjan Mukherjee, a spokesperson for Bell’s campaign. “Wesley has been a progressive prosecutor, working to overturn wrongful convictions and refusing to prosecute women for abortions, and he will be a progressive member of Congress who works with President Biden.” Byrne, who is now a municipal judge in a neighboring county, said Bell ran his campaign as a friendly favor. The two met as young lawyers in St. Louis County, he recalled, and became friends over years of poker nights. “He didn’t run a Republican’s campaign, he ran a friend’s campaign,” Byrne said in an interview this week with HuffPost. “He and I didn’t see eye to eye on political issues, but he did the best that he could to try to help me get elected.”
[...] As of May, Bell has raised more than $65,000 in contributions from donors who normally give to Republicans. They include a former GOP speaker of the Missouri House, the billionaire hedge fund founder Daniel Loeb, and the former finance chair for Sen. Tim Scott’s (R-S.C.) presidential super PAC. At the end of the last fundraising quarter, Bell reported having about twice as much cash on hand as Bush. Bell has also benefited from more than $300,000 in ads paid for by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s super PAC. While AIPAC backs candidates of both parties who support U.S. military assistance for Israel, progressive critics have noted the PAC’s top contributors are GOP megadonors. Bush is one of AIPAC’s top targets in the 2024 elections. “The fact that my ‘Democratic’ opponent’s entrance into politics was managing a Republican congressional campaign for a far-right, anti-abortion extremist is strikingly consistent, and it should tell voters everything they need to know,” Bush said in a statement. “He can’t be trusted to protect our reproductive freedoms and abortion rights, secure our democracy, and stand up to the MAGA Republican extremists in Congress.”
St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell is claiming to run as a progressive to unseat incumbent Rep. Cori Bush (D) in MO-01, but in 2006, he helped manage a GOP campaign for House candidate Mark J. Byrne.

Pluto Aquarius : The Abstract Era
Tumblr media
Hey y’all I’m back with another post! This is a good one because this transit is a major one that’s going to impact us all! To see how it’s going to impact you, check your natal and progressed chart. Look for the house Aquarius rules over. This house represents that particular area in your life. Ex. Aqua 4h, so your home, mother, family will be going through huge changes during this time.
Disclaimer: these are just my own predictions based on my years of studying astrology and applying the archetypes of the planet and sign. the future is unknown but that doesn’t mean we still cant predict the themes of what to at least be aware of. Remember this transit will effect everyone differently because we all have different birth charts. Read this post as a collective reading than individual reading.
Pluto entered Aquarius March 24 until June 12th before it goes back into Capricorn until January 23. It will then stay in Aquarius for the next 20 years! Yes 20!! If you’re in your 20s that mean your Aquarius house in your birth chart will go through massive transformations until you’re in your 40s. Aqua placements, this is a huge time for you!!
If you need a reminder on what rules what, then here’s a list. Feel free to write it down in your own notes.
Pluto rules over: death/rebirth, birth, transformations, exchanges, debt, occult, cult, taboo, horror movies, power, wealth(Pluto means wealth), sex/sexuality, reproduction system, legacy, inheritances, heirs/heirlooms, partners money/joint finances, psychics/psychic gifts, psychology, therapist, , surgeries writers(crime, or dark themes), mortality, funerals, memorials, graveyards, secrets and hidden things, disappointments, deep fears, our experiences.
Aquarius rules over human/humanity, society, social groups, friend group, acquaintances, clubs, large groups of people, community, supporters, “stans (loyal fans), astrology, wish fulfillment, Social Media/content creators, technology, sciences, aviation and speed, projects, innovation ideas, ankles and calves, uniqueness, outcast, disabled people, adoption, step siblings. Chimps/Apes
What does this mean Globally? Well let’s look and see how this will “probably” play out. I put those words in quotations because as astrologers we can only predict what might happen. We sit back and watch the show just like you😂 but that’s what make astrology fun and enlightening.
These are my personal predictions that I believe will be the themes. Remind you, this is a 20 year transit so some of this won’t happen overnight. I live in the US so a lot of the predictions is based on what’s happening here but it can still apply to other countries because we’re all connected some way
Predictions
-Ai. It’s everywhere, and I’m just going to be honest I don’t think it’s going anywhere and I believe it will advanced. Good news is that we are fighting as a collective to not let it replace us. Ai is suppose to help assist us not replace us. I think their will be some government control over it. I think we will eventually have robot type teachers, holograms, hologram type traveling, will assist doctors and medical discoveries. Ai is going to be used in everyday life for mundane things, AI use in airplanes and Cars. Faster trains.
-the Aliens 👽. The government has finally acknowledged other life forms even though we all knew this lol. Aliens have and will be a continuing topic.
-Government. I do believe there’s going to be new laws or even a constitution that will fit with this century standards and not our forefathers. Pluto rules over extreme changes. Aquarius rules over the government just like Capricorn. Remember Aqua is also co-ruled by Saturn. The difference is that Capricorn creates laws to maintain order and structure while Aquarius breaks and create new laws that can be beneficial for everyone.
-Fashion. We are entering the Cosplay everyday era. What I mean is that people are going to dressing up in the abstract clothing and it’ll be the norm. Comic con is going to be an everyday event because people are going to dress like their favorite characters just because Lol. I feel like more people are going to entrepreneurs and create a more chill vibe and have less corporations rule setting. It’s giving the office vibes lol. I also feel like more people are going to be wearing comfortable clothing than trying to “fit in.” Sustainability/Recycled clothing will be a huge fashion trend. Blues, dark reds, silver, dark yellows may be popular colors.
-protest and strikes! We’re already seeing it with Hollywood. So many actors and writers have come out and said their not making hardly nothing! Only 2% of this industry is wealthy, which means most are broke asf. Then I remembered Hollywood is Pisces energy. (Illusions & lies) what does this mean for HW in the future? Theyre not going anywhere lol. Aquarius is Leo sister sign, it’s also a fame sign. There’s always going to be famous people, however; I believe independent movie studios will be on the rise such as A24. More celebrities getting involved in activism and humanitarian projects than movies/tv. More celebrities connecting with non celeb people. I actually think a lot of them will help regular people kickstart their non-profits. More celebrities becoming entrepreneurs. This isn’t going to just be happening in the entertainment industry, this is going to happen in every industry. It wouldn’t surprise me if we see more airline protest and strikes. Moral of the story, people are going where theyre actually appreciated.
-Sex. I believe people are going to be more open when it comes to their sexuality. Talking about sex will be a normal conversation. I truly believe we are entering “let your freak fly era.” People may start to get into some crazy kinky stuff (no judgement, you do you boo!) lol
- community. Here’s the thing, I do feel like people will find their “tribe” “community” “soul group” whatever you call it but it won’t happen until you know who you are as a person first. What can you bring to the group? How can you help if you don’t know your own strengths and weaknesses? Even better question, how you gone join a community when you don’t even know what community you should join because you don’t know who you are? This is what the current North Node Aries transit will teach you! When you figure out who you are is when you will find your people.
-marriage and family. I believe we are going to start seeing more diverse families and couples. People are going to find love away from their home/culture. You may see lots of stories of people finding love overseas while traveling. People may meet their partner at random places or at a random time in their life. I feel like adoption will be a focus such as affordability, people finding out their adopted, people adopting. I believe tough conversation around adoption will rise such as people who adopt children for selfish reasons such as exploitation, adoptees talking about how hard life was for them. Remember Pluto reveals the dark side of things. I actually feel like people will start marrying more for stability then the traditional “I love you” romantic way, I also feel like people will marry their best friend(non romantic) to get by. Pluto aqua rules over USA 2h/3h (placidus)
- the outcast. more women/minorities will be entrepreneurs and working in the communication media, maybe more women(especially black)influential content creators. You may see more Poc and women working in the tech industry and more in the entertainment industry such as more award winning directors, screenwriters etc disabled people especially physical will start to be in different industries getting noticed, becoming well known activist.
-money and transportation. I do feel like there’s going to be a huge shift in our economy. I feel like crypto currency or some form of a digital banking will become our norm. Physical dollar will start to become a thing of the past. I just read an article a few months ago stating the first flying car will be released in 2025. Phones, computers are going to be more advanced than they are now. I don’t know how but it will be. We may end up having full on digital libraries that’s more advanced than kindle and others. In the USA chart, Pluto Aquarius will be in the 3h.
-health and sciences. The medical industry is going to have lots of breakthroughs. Lots of new discoveries on surgery equipment. We are going to be seeing a lot of impossibles become possible. We’re already seeing it. I just saw a surgery where they can adjust your height. Who would’ve thought that was possible 10 years ago lol. Buts that’s where the medical field is going. Pluto rules over extreme changes. I’m personally curious on the technology that’s going to help physically disabled people and what type of advancements will be discovered there.
-Animals. More People are going to start having all types of pets. The classic I have a cat, dog or goldfish won’t be your only type of pet. Instead we’re going to be hearing I have a dog and 2 raccoons lol. Aquarius rules over Apes, i wonder if there’s going to be some planet of the apes scenario. Not them taking over but studies may come out showing they’re more evolved then we realize👀
-internet. I’m going to be real honest with you and I’m not trying to instill fear or none of that but we all need to start being more private on the internet. Don’t post where you are until a few days after you’ve left. If you can, make your page private. Pluto rules over stalkers and aqua rules the internet. If you can avoid it, please don’t have your young kids on the internet without your supervision. Make their pages private too. If you have teenagers, please have a thorough conversation with them about the dangers of the internet, especially when it comes to weirdos asking them for nudes. Listen I grew up when having these talks about the internet wasn’t a thing because our parents didn’t have this growing but we can help the next generation from our mistakes. Like I said I’m not trying to scare anyone. We live in a digital world now so I want you all and your families to take safety precautions.
Thank you for taking the time to read. I know this post was long but I wanted to cover a much as I could. Please feel free to reblog and write your own predictions.

For this year’s International Women’s Day, the United Nations calls on us to “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.” The theme highlights how, amid a global polycrisis, achieving gender equality is vital for the collective well-being of communities worldwide. It calls attention to the significant challenges that persist in ensuring gender-equitable outcomes: in particular, evidence from the 2023 Gender Snapshot projecting that 340 million women and girls will still be living in poverty by 2030 and highlighting a significant funding shortfall—an additional $360 billion investment needed to achieve SDG goals of gender equality.
As global calls for financing for gender equality continue, it is vital to center care in these conversations. Over the past few decades, while programs focusing on women’s inclusion into the formal economy have made promising strides, much of the labor traditionally performed by girls and women, such as domestic and care work, is unpaid and not accounted for in conventional economic models. Globally, women perform an estimated 76 percent of unpaid care work. Even when paid, care work is often characterized by low wages and inadequate working conditions, especially for the most marginalized workers.
This International Women’s Day, as we reflect upon the advances made in the struggle for gender equality and justice in the previous decades, policy and program design would also be strengthened from addressing the relative invisibility of women’s labor across informal and care economies.
Situating women in global development
Globally, women’s inclusion as stakeholders in development processes emerged in the 1970s as part of a transnational “Women in Development” movement, which sought to position women as central to development—both as agents and beneficiaries. The movement’s advocacy translated into significant policy shifts, beginning with the 1973 Percy Amendment to the U.S. Foreign Assistance Act, requiring that “U.S. foreign aid programs encourage and promote the integration of women into the national economies in the developing countries.”
In the following decade, a broad array of global actors began championing women’s role in development. For example, the OECD instituted the Guiding Principles for Supporting the Role of Women in Development in 1983, and the World Bank established a Women in Development division in 1987. Galvanized by the U.N. Decade for Women (1975), along with decades of feminist research and organizing across the Global South and North, such programs ranged from women workers’ rights to small scale social enterprise, the latter of which were contemporaneous with the ascendancy of neoliberal policies in the 1980s and the faith in increasingly market-based solutions toward development.
But much like the biologically deterministic category of “woman” itself, actors working in the women in development space were far from homogenous. Over the intervening decades, their work has pushed theory and practice in new directions, introducing debates over whether women’s economic inclusion should be separated from advocating structural transformations in the political economy and asking what the roles of gender, race, caste, class, ability, and geopolitics are in women’s development programs. This has led to new frameworks, including those emphasizing gender relations, intersectionality, and global redistributive politics, which continue to shape contemporary debates in the broader field of gender and development.
In many of these debates, the gendered division of labor has been at the center. For example, feminist research on social reproduction—which broadly refers to the paid and unpaid labor necessary to sustain human life, such as care work—highlights not only that such labor has historically been seen as “women’s work” but also how its devaluation is fundamental in reproducing inequality and patriarchy.
Building care infrastructures for a gender-equal future
So, while today’s calls to invest in gender equality can fuel transformative initiatives, there are also perils associated with focusing solely on women’s inclusion in the formal labor market. Evaluating progress through this lens can not only render women who perform domestic or care work as “unworthy, disposable others,” but can also erase how race, class, and geopolitics shape labor across all gender identities. A broader view of the economy, which encompasses concepts of care, is fundamental in creating a more gender-equal future. In fact, Sustainable Development Goal 5.4 underscores the importance of valuing unpaid work by providing essential public services and promoting shared household responsibilities.
Building care infrastructures that recognize, fairly compensate, and redistribute the care work performed predominately by the working class, migrants, and women of color can lead to a multitude of benefits, including ensuring better educational outcomes for children, improving women’s mental well-being, and expanding women’s access to economic opportunities. One example of how the redistribution of care work can lead to gender equality is adequate and well-incentivized paternity leave, which can increase mothers’ probability of reemployment, promote maternal health, and advance gender and economic equality. Additionally, recognizing unpaid care and domestic work can help promote the elimination of discriminatory social norms and deep-rooted stereotypes around ideas of gender and labor–ultimately contributing to building more inclusive societies for all gender identities.
Looking forward
As global stakeholders respond to this year’s International Women’s Day call, determining who, how, and what to invest in can facilitate progress toward more equitable and sustainable development goals.
Who: Using an intersectional lens can enable stakeholders to identify how different systems of oppression—and the particularities between them—marginalize individuals and communities across all gender identities, and who should be centered in policy and programs.
How: The root causes of marginalization may then be addressed through a critical reflection of power dynamics across and within development contexts, and empowering local communities to chart their paths toward justice and equality, which can also inform recent “localization” efforts championed by development actors such as the U.S. Agency for International Development.
What: Finally, such shifts toward intersectionality and localization may also benefit from directly addressing inequities at the household, community, and national levels—in particular, both domestic work at home and in paid sectors such as education and health care—by developing concrete tools and infrastructures that value and redistribute care burdens.
As we craft new strategies to carry forward the decades-long fight to transform systems that sustain inequality and patriarchy, reimagining the relationships between gender, labor, and the economy is essential to building a more just future for all.

hi! don't know if we can still send in questions, but I was wondering if you know what kind of careers you can get in conservation?
You can always send in questions!
There are a lot of different careers in conservation. Like, a LOT. Many jobs, especially at the entry level, may be tricky to find as many organizations rely on funding which means you see a lot of very specific jobs that are for specific periods of time as outlined by grants and funding. For example, I recently applied for a job that was hiring specifically for a set number of hours a week a a set hourly rate, for a period of 10 months. This is because when grants are given to organizations to hire people, they tend to be very specific as to how the grant money must be allocated. Some of these jobs are extendable, meaning if they get more funding they can keep the person in the position on for another grant period (usually doubling the original contract).
If you live near a zoo or conservation facility you would like to work for, I recommend checking their career page regularly or subscribing to receive hiring updates via emails. When it comes to conservation jobs getting a foot in the door is crucial so even being a janitor or doing grounds keeping for a reputable zoo is a great way to start networking, and start moving up into a job that you would prefer more. Similarly, working in any type of environmental role or conservation position is an asset. My goal is to work in ape conservation, but I will look for any environmental jobs that are comparable to the type of work I would like to do.
When it comes to what kind of careers you can get, there are a lot of fantastic options to set your sights on. Remember that many of these jobs require many years of experience, but even if you are not qualified knowing what kind of career you want to strive for can help create a path to your dream job. Different skills and experiences can help you become qualified for different rolls, but the single most common thing I see in job postings (especially permanent, salary rolls that pay well) is management skills. This is good news because this is a very transferable skill, meaning that you can become a skilled manager in any field and be qualified to move into a conservation roll. In general, if you have management, financial, or administrative skills and experience you can probably find a conservation job that wants you. Here's an incomplete list of some conservation careers I have seen:
In animal care/wildlife sciences: Veterinarians, Wildlife Health Technicians, Zookeepers, Reproductive Research Assistants, Nutrition Assistants, Conservation Stewards.
In facilities and infrastructure: Plumbers, Electricians, Carpenters, Mechanics, Gardeners, Material Collectors, Project Managers Exhibit Design Technicians.
In communications and guest experience: Event planning, Partnership & Event Associates, Marketing Associates, Education and Outreach facilitation, Fundraising, Advertising.
In administration and general management: Finance, Purchasing & Supply, Human Resources, Payroll, Technology, Safety & Security, First Aid.
Basically conservation is a very large expanse of many careers, and while it can be very competitive (last job I applied had over 100 applicants for one position) it's a small world where you can make connections with people and build on pretty much any skills or experience you bring to the table. If you have questions about specific career paths I would love to answer them, and I recommend checking out GoodWork.ca* and the websites of places you want to work such as the jobs page for the Toronto Zoo or Calgary Zoo, just for example. Even if there isn't anything you like or are qualified for, you can learn a lot.
*GoodWork is Canadian. If you know of a conservation job posting site for other countries such as the U.S., drop a comment!

How is two men not considering adoption a news story?
https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/for-one-gay-couple-it-will-take-some-luck-and-a-surrogate-to-become-fathers
For one gay couple, it will take some luck — and a surrogate — to become fathers
Aaron and Kyle Demes have been talking about being dads since their first date at the Yaletown Brewing Co. in 2018. Since then, all the milestones in the couple’s relationship have been building blocks to becoming parents: their mid-COVID-19 wedding in 2021, Aaron’s decision to take Kyle’s last name and their purchase of a home in the Port Moody suburbs.
Now, they just need an egg and someone to carry their child.
“They say it takes a village to raise a kid. It’ll take a village to create one,” said Aaron, a 33-year-old who works for TransLink.
Their hunt for a surrogate may not be easy.
A growing number of same sex couples are using surrogacy to have children but the number of women willing to be gestational surrogates is dropping, said Sally Rhoads-Heinrich.
After carrying twins for an American couple in 2000, the Ontario woman launched Surrogacy in Canada Online, an agency that introduces prospective parents to potential surrogates. A gestational surrogate doesn’t have any biological connection to the child and has the egg and sperm implanted into her uterus by in vitro fertilization.
It’s legal in Canada to use another person’s eggs, sperm or uterus to conceive a child, but it’s illegal to pay for it, according to the Assisted Human Reproduction Act passed in 2004. That’s why couples rely on the altruism of someone willing to carry a stranger’s child. It’s also illegal for an agency to match people with a surrogate, which is why Rhoads-Heinrich’s company facilitates introductions through a profile that’s not unlike online dating.
Couples pay a one-time, $8,000 membership fee in the hopes of matching with a surrogate.
“The matches are going down because there are not as many surrogates,” she said, estimating the number of surrogates using her service has dropped by 50 per cent. “There’s more intended parents than ever. But we just don’t have the surrogates to match everyone. So only the lucky ones are getting picked.”
One of the reasons could be that fewer women are choosing to be mothers.
“If you just go on Tik Tok or social media, you’ll see a real trend towards being child-free,” Rhoads-Heinrich said.
Fertility rates have been steadily declining since 2009, a trend intensified by COVID. Canada’s fertility rate decreased from 1.47 children per woman in 2019 to a record low of 1.4 children per woman in 2020, according to Statistics Canada.
Rhoads-Heinrich said that when she first starting the agency, about four per cent of intended parents were same sex couples. Now it’s about half. Her members also include heterosexual couples who are infertile or single people wanting to become parents.
Tumblr media
In the U.S., where it’s legal to pay for surrogacy, couples can expect to spend between $100,00 and $170,000. That includes paying the surrogate compensation — usually around $50,000 — and expenses, agency fees, legal fees and medical costs.
Kyle and Aaron spoke to other same sex couples who paid either for eggs and sperm or a surrogate in another country and they were concerned about the possibility of exploitation.
“That is certainly something that’s been on our mind the whole time is, ‘When this (a woman’s body) is the commodity that people are exchanging finances for, who is really impacted by that and how?’ ” said Kyle, 36, who runs a consulting firm.
The couple opted against paying a surrogacy agency, which is why they’re sharing their story in the media.
“There’s something about the altruism in surrogacy, about finding somebody that you have a connection with who is willing to help you, I think really resonates for us,” Aaron said.
The couple has been told to budget $40,000-to-$60,000 to cover the surrogate’s expenses — which could include food, travel and lost wages — medical costs including IVF and legal fees to ensure they’re recognized as the child’s legal guardians.
Aaron has known about surrogacy since he was 11-years-old. In 2001, his mother, B.C. NDP cabinet minister Selina Robinson, was a surrogate for her friend, Terri Rypkema, who had lost one baby and was left infertile after a second pregnancy.
“I think my favourite part of the story is where I went to my teacher and said, ‘I just want to let you know my mom is pregnant. But it’s not my dad’s. And it’s not my mom’s either.’ And I had to explain surrogacy as an 11-year-old.”
That was during a time when doctors didn’t do surrogacies in B.C., so Robinson had to travel to Calgary to have the embryos implanted.
Census data doesn’t track the number of surrogate pregnancies in Canada but data collected by the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society and BORN Ontario show that surrogacy rates have been increasing over the last decade, with 563 gestational surrogates in 2021, compared with 364 in 2011. However, that data tracks the number of embryo implantations but not successful pregnancies or births.
Alana Cattapan, an assistant professor at Ontario’s University of Waterloo and Canada Research Chair in the Politics of Reproduction, said that based on the data she’s not seeing evidence to support Rhoads-Heinrich’s claim that fewer women are willing to be surrogates.
She and her colleagues are working on a study that included a survey of 174 people who have been surrogates in Canada. That survey, which is consistent with other studies that have been done in Canada, shows 30-to-40 per cent of surrogates in Canada are providing for intended parents who live abroad, likely in countries where surrogacy is illegal or where it’s more difficult for same sex couples to have children. Any form of surrogacy is illegal in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria and Taiwan.
Italy, under its new far-right government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, is making it more difficult for same sex couples to have a child through an international surrogate, ordering municipalities to stop certifying the children’s foreign birth certificates.
Aaron and Kyle said they’ve heard nothing but support for their desire to become dads.
“Everyone’s like, ‘You guys are gonna be great dads.’ And 15 years ago, that wouldn’t have been the case,” Kyle said. “We’ve made huge strides.”
Robinson, who already had two children when she carried Rypkema’s son, Evan, recalls people asking during her pregnancy how she can give up a child.
“I never felt like I was letting go of anything or giving anything up,” she said. “The gift for me was helping a friend. There’s a human being here because I helped make that happen.”
At the time, Robinson’s family was interviewed for a TV documentary series called The Things We Do For Love. She still chokes up at Aaron’s response when the reporter asked him how he felt about his mom carrying someone else’s child.
While playing Legos, he said: “Well, if everyone did something because they felt it was the right thing to do, the world would be a much better place.”
Aaron and Kyle Demes have set up an email in the hopes of finding a surrogate and an egg donor. People can contact them at [email protected]
Does anyone else see this push towards altruistic surgery as leading to constantly hounding child free women to be surrogates? Or harassing women women state they have the number if kids they want?

Swarup Mediheal Hospital: From $500 to a KSh 10 Billion Healthcare Empire
Swarup Mishra, the man behind Swarup Mediheal Hospital, is a visionary leader who transformed Kenya’s healthcare industry. From humble beginnings with just $500, Dr. Mishra built a regional hospital empire now valued at over KSh 10 billion. His journey from India to Eldoret, and from lecturer to healthcare tycoon and politician, is a true inspiration.
Tumblr media
The Early Days: From India to Kenya
Born in India in the mid-1960s, Dr. Swarup Mishra moved to Kenya in 1997 with his wife, Dr. Pallavi Mishra, and their young son. With only $500 in hand, they chose Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County as their new home. At first, Pallavi got a job while Swarup traveled to smaller towns like Kabarnet and Iten to perform surgeries. Later, he joined Moi University as a lecturer in the Department of Reproductive Health, a position he held for 16 years.
The Birth of Swarup Mediheal Hospital
In 2006, Swarup and Pallavi took a bold step. They used their savings and unsecured bank loans to purchase and revive a struggling hospital in Eldoret. That facility became the first Swarup Mediheal Hospital. Located at the busy Eldoret-Nakuru Highway, the hospital quickly grew under their leadership.
The Eldoret branch now offers 150 beds and is known for its cutting-edge medical services, including:
Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART)
Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (first in the region)
Pain-free surgeries
IVF treatments
Cosmetic procedures
Mediheal’s Expansion Across Africa
Thanks to its quality care and modern approach, Swarup Mediheal Hospital has expanded to multiple cities:
Nakuru
Nairobi (Parklands and Eastleigh)
Kigali, Rwanda
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Mishra attributes the hospital's growth to four key pillars:
Modern infrastructure
Qualified medical staff
High-tech equipment
Affordable healthcare
Beyond Medicine: Swarup Mishra the Politician
In 2017, Dr. Mishra was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kesses under the Jubilee Party. He made history as the first Asian MP in a Kalenjin-majority constituency, winning hearts with his humility and generosity. Locals affectionately call him “Kiprop Arap Chelule”, symbolizing his deep connection with the community.
The Personal Side of Swarup Mediheal Hospital’s Founder
Swarup is married to Dr. Pallavi Mishra, a leading gynecologist specializing in IVF and high-risk pregnancies. They have two children: a son who studied finance in the UK and a daughter who pursued law.
In 2022, he unveiled a luxurious mansion in Elgon View Estate, Eldoret, attended by top leaders including then-Deputy President William Ruto.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite massive success, Mishra faced challenges. After losing the 2022 elections, Mediheal Hospital faced financial difficulties and controversies, including delisting from the NHIF panel. Mishra has firmly denied any wrongdoing, and the hospital continues to serve thousands of patients across the region.
Swarup Mediheal Hospital: A Lasting Legacy
Dr. Swarup Mishra’s story is a powerful example of resilience, leadership, and vision. He turned a small idea—and just $500—into one of East Africa’s top healthcare networks. Whether in the operating room, lecture hall, or parliament, Swarup Mediheal Hospital reflects his passion for changing lives and making healthcare accessible.

Fertility Hospital Innovations: Bangalore's Leading Clinics
Navigating the complex landscape of fertility treatments can be daunting, but in the heart of India’s Silicon Valley, a beacon of hope shines for countless individuals and couples. Aspire Fertility is the fertility hospital in Bangalore, and it is at the forefront of revolutionizing reproductive healthcare. Bangalore, a city known for its technological advancements, is also rapidly becoming a hub for cutting-edge fertility treatments, with clinics like Aspire Fertility leading the charge. This blog delves into the innovative practices and technologies that are transforming the fertility landscape, specifically focusing on the advancements being pioneered by leading clinics in Bangalore.
One of the most significant innovations in fertility treatments is the adoption of advanced Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). Aspire Fertility, along with other leading clinics, is investing heavily in state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with the latest incubators, micromanipulators, and imaging systems. These technologies enhance the precision and success rates of procedures like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). High-resolution time-lapse imaging, for instance, allows embryologists to monitor embryo development in real-time without disturbing the delicate environment, leading to better selection and improved implantation rates.
Personalized medicine is another area where Bangalore’s best fertility clinics are making strides. Recognizing that each patient’s journey is unique, clinics like Aspire Fertility are moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach. Genetic testing, including preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) and monogenic disorders (PGT-M), is becoming increasingly common. These tests help identify embryos with the highest potential for successful implantation and a healthy pregnancy, significantly reducing the risk of miscarriage and genetic abnormalities. Tailoring treatment plans based on an individual’s genetic makeup and medical history is revolutionizing patient care.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is also playing a crucial role in enhancing fertility treatments. AI algorithms are being used to analyze vast datasets of patient information, predicting treatment outcomes with greater accuracy and optimizing medication dosages. This technology is particularly beneficial in identifying subtle patterns and trends that may be missed by human observation, leading to more effective and efficient treatment protocols. Aspire Fertility is investigating and adopting such technologies to improve patient outcomes.
Furthermore, minimally invasive surgical techniques are transforming the way fertility issues are addressed. Laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries are becoming the gold standard for treating conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, and tubal blockages. These procedures offer shorter recovery times, reduced scarring, and lower risks of complications compared to traditional open surgeries. Leading fertility hospitals in Bangalore are equipped with advanced operating theatres and skilled surgeons trained in these techniques.
Patient-centric care is another hallmark of the innovative fertility clinics in Bangalore. Understanding the emotional and psychological toll that fertility treatments can take, clinics like Aspire Fertility are offering comprehensive support services. This includes counseling, support groups, and educational resources to help patients navigate the challenges of their journey. Holistic approaches, such as yoga, meditation, and nutritional counseling, are also integrated into treatment plans to promote overall well-being.
Finally, the accessibility of fertility treatments is improving, thanks to innovative financing options and patient-friendly payment plans. Clinics are working to make these life-changing treatments more affordable and accessible to a wider population. This includes transparent pricing, flexible payment schedules, and partnerships with insurance providers.
In conclusion, Bangalore’s best fertility clinics, with Aspire Fertility leading the way, are at the forefront of innovation, offering advanced technologies, personalized care, and comprehensive support to individuals and couples seeking to build their families. The convergence of cutting-edge technology and compassionate care is transforming the landscape of fertility treatments, offering new hope and possibilities for those on this challenging journey. When searching for a reliable fertility hospital in Bangalore, Aspire Fertility stands out as a beacon of innovation and compassion.

Erin Reed at Erin In The Morning:
On Tuesday, Gov. Janet Mills of Maine signed LD 227, a sanctuary bill that protects transgender and abortion providers and patients from out-of-state prosecution, into law. With this action, Maine becomes the 16th state to explicitly protect transgender and abortion care in state law from prosecution. This follows several bomb threats targeting state legislators after social media attacks from far-right anti-trans influencers such as Riley Gaines and Chaya Raichik of Libs of TikTok. An earlier version of the bill failed in committee after similar attacks in January. Undeterred, Democrats reconvened and added additional protections to the bill before it was passed into law.
The law is extensive. It asserts that gender-affirming care and reproductive health care are "legal rights" in Maine. It states that criminal and civil actions against providers and patients are not enforceable if the provision or access to that care occurred within Maine’s borders, asserting jurisdiction over those matters. It bars cooperation with out-of-state subpoenas and arrest warrants for gender-affirming care and abortion that happen within the state. It even protects doctors who provide gender-affirming care and abortion from certain adverse actions by medical boards, malpractice insurance, and other regulating entities, shielding those providers from attempts to economically harm them through out-of-state legislation designed to dissuade them from providing care.
The bill also explicitly enshrines the World Professional Association of Transgender Health’s Standards of Care, which have been the target of right-wing disinformation campaigns, into state law for the coverage of transgender healthcare.
The bill is said to be necessary due to attempts to prosecute doctors and seek information from patients across state lines. In recent months, attorneys general in other states have attempted to obtain health care data on transgender patients who traveled to obtain care. According to the United States Senate Finance Committee, attorneys general in Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, and Texas attempted to obtain detailed medical records "to terrorize transgender teens in their states… opening the door to criminalizing women’s private reproductive health care choices." The most blatant of these attempts was from the Attorney General of Texas, who, according to the Senate Finance Committee, "sent demands to at least two non-Texas entities."
[...] Despite these threats, legislators strengthened both the abortion and gender-affirming care provisions and pressed forward, passing the bill into law. Provisions found in the new bill include protecting people who "aid and assist" gender-affirming care and abortion, protections against court orders from other states for care obtained in Maine, and even protections against adverse actions by health insurance and malpractice insurance providers, which have been recent targets of out-of-state legislation aimed at financially discouraging doctors from providing gender-affirming care and abortion care even in states where it is legal.
Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) signs gender-affirming care and abortion sanctuary state bill LD227 into law despite the best efforts of right-wing anti-trans extremists such as Riley Gaines, Courage Is A Habit, and Libs of TikTok who sought to thwart its passage and signature into law.

Why Choose Ahmedabad for IVF Treatment?
Ahmedabad has emerged as a leading destination for IVF treatment due to several factors:

The IVF Process in Ahmedabad: A Step-by-Step Guide
Initial Consultation and Evaluation:
The journey begins with a thorough consultation with a fertility specialist.
Medical history, physical examination, and various tests are conducted to assess fertility status.
A personalized treatment plan is developed based on individual needs.
Ovarian Stimulation:
Fertility medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
Regular monitoring through ultrasound and blood tests is conducted to track follicle development.
Egg Retrieval:
A minor surgical procedure is performed to retrieve the mature eggs from the ovaries.
This procedure is typically performed under sedation.
Sperm Collection and Fertilization:
Sperm is collected from the male partner or a donor.
The eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory dish for fertilization.
In cases of male factor infertility, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) may be used.
Embryo Development:
The fertilized eggs (embryos) are monitored for several days to assess their development.
Embryo Transfer:
One or more healthy embryos are transferred into the uterus.
This procedure is usually painless and requires no anesthesia.
Pregnancy Test and Follow-up:
A pregnancy test is performed approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer.
If pregnancy is confirmed, regular prenatal care is provided.
Factors to Consider When Choosing an IVF Center in Ahmedabad:
Success Rates: Inquire about the clinic's success rates, but remember that individual outcomes can vary.
Experience and Expertise: Choose a clinic with experienced fertility specialists and embryologists.
Technology and Facilities: Ensure the clinic has state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories.
Cost and Financing Options: Discuss the cost of treatment and any available financing options.
Patient Support: Choose a clinic that provides comprehensive patient support, including counseling and guidance.

Choosing the Right Fertility Treatment: A Guide for Couples
For couples struggling with infertility, selecting the right fertility treatment can be overwhelming. With various assisted reproductive technologies available, it is crucial to understand your options and choose a path best suited to your unique needs. This guide provides an in-depth look at different fertility treatments and factors to consider when making your decision.
Understanding Fertility Treatments
Fertility treatments vary depending on the cause of infertility, medical history, and personal preferences. Some common treatments include:
1. Ovulation Induction (OI)
This treatment is for women who experience irregular ovulation. Medications like Clomid or Letrozole are prescribed to stimulate ovulation, increasing the chances of conception.
2. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
IUI is a less invasive fertility treatment where sperm is directly inserted into the uterus during ovulation. It is recommended for couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or cervical issues.
3. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
IVF is one of the most advanced fertility treatments. It involves retrieving eggs from the ovaries, fertilizing them in a lab, and transferring the embryo into the uterus. IVF is recommended for couples with blocked fallopian tubes, severe male infertility, endometriosis, or unexplained infertility.
4. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
ICSI is an advanced form of IVF where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg. It is used in cases of severe male infertility, where sperm motility or morphology is compromised.
5. Donor Eggs or Sperm
For couples facing challenges such as poor egg or sperm quality, using donor eggs or sperm can be an option to achieve pregnancy.
6. Surrogacy
In cases where a woman is unable to carry a pregnancy due to medical conditions, surrogacy offers an alternative. A surrogate mother carries the baby to term for the intended parents.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Fertility Treatment
1. Identifying the Cause of Infertility
A thorough fertility evaluation by a trusted specialist is the first step. Tests such as hormonal analysis, ultrasound, semen analysis, and genetic screening help diagnose the underlying causes of infertility.
2. Age and Fertility Potential
Age plays a significant role in fertility treatment success. Women under 35 typically have higher success rates with treatments like IVF, while older women may need advanced procedures such as egg freezing or donor eggs.
3. Success Rates of Different Treatments
Researching the success rates of various fertility treatments is essential. Discussing past patient success stories with specialists at a fertility treatment hospital in Vijayanagar Bangalore can provide insight into the best approach for your situation.
4. Emotional and Financial Considerations
Fertility treatments can be emotionally and financially demanding. It is important to consider the emotional impact and discuss financial options, including insurance coverage or financing plans, before proceeding with treatment.
5. Lifestyle and Health Factors
Improving overall health can enhance the success of fertility treatments. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and alcohol can boost fertility. Reducing stress through yoga, meditation, or counseling can also be beneficial.

Selecting the right fertility clinic is just as important as choosing the right treatment.
