The cost of Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s inner circle has shot up dramatically after the latest reshuffle, as the number of cabinet ministers — and their cost to the taxpayer — grows compared to when the Progressive Conservatives first took office in 2018. Overall, Ford’s most recent cabinet has increased by 72 per cent compared to his first. Shortly after the Ontario Legislature ended for an extended summer break on Thursday, Ford unveiled a mid-sized cabinet shuffle at Queen’s Park, which resulted in the largest cabinet in Ontario’s history.

Yo, how'd they deal with Aether over there after the incident?
okay so i had to do a shit ton of research for ya on this one cuz tbh i. didnt really pay too much attention to the whole aether thing when that was goin on. i was like. 11 when that was goin on. i was kinda doin other shit back then.
anyways. i tried to make this as in-depth as possible for you n lillie (and moon if she's still there) since yall have a lot more insight into all of this that many on this site may not.
so here's a rundown of what happened:
Aether Investigation
The Mass Ultra Beast Attack incident in 2017 was what first incited investigations into Aether, and also resulted in minimal, preliminary checks of entities such as the Dimensional Research Lab in Heahea City. Once it was made clear that the incident was a result of illicit research into Ultra Wormholes by the Aether Foundation all efforts were directed towards the investigation into its research division.
From November 17th, 2017 to January 12th, 2018 all Aether Foundation research operations were placed on hold for the duration of the criminal investigation (conducted in collaboration between the Alolan Government and the International Police) into it’s research facilities. For a short period of time, conservation activities were also placed on hold, but resumed less than two weeks after being paused.
During the investigation, Aether’s research division was shut down, at first temporarily, before being permanently shut down independent of law enforcement in preparation for what was described as “a massive overhaul of Foundation norms, practices, and facilities.” (Wicke, 2018)
Meanwhile, Lusamine Aether was flown into Kanto for treatment involving being used as the host of a UB01 Symbiont (known as a Nihilego) specimen spanning from late November 2017 to late August 2017; since Aether’s diagnosis and treatment, there have been promising efforts in modifying existing anti-parasitics to treat Nihilego venom, as well as the synthesis of new drugs.
After the conclusion of Aether’s treatment, she was taken into custody, as well as multiple Aether scientists, and Branch Chief Gustave Faba. Aether and Faba were both released after three days and four weeks respectively; while Aether was specifically prohibited from assuming any position of employment within the Aether Foundation, Faba struck a plea deal, and was demoted to intern.
Aftermath
In late November 2017, Assistant Branch Chief Veronica Wicke took up the position of acting President until March 2019, when she permanently became the Foundation’s President.
In November 2021, both Lillie Aether and Gladion Aether began getting involved with the Foundation’s research and conservation efforts; Gladion primarily took part in Type: Null rehabilitation efforts, while Lillie participated in carefully monitored research into Ultra Space.
Regarding Project Beast Killer specifically; there are currently three Type: Null that are publicly known of, all from the original project conducted by the Foundation. IDed as 773-01, it is currently in the possession of Gladion Aether and no longer wears the control mask. The other two, dubbed 773-02 and 772-03 are in the possession of Selene ‘Moon’ [last name] and the Aether Foundation respectively. Selene’s Type: Null no longer wears the control mask.
And that's about all I could find thru articles n whatnot
...
buuuut i went digging a little deeper.
Soon after investigations into the Foundation’s research divisions began, it was found that various files vital to Project Beast Killer were leaked onto the internet while the project was still progressing. From 2017 to the present, the Alolan government and Interpol have been on watch for attempts at recreating the project, though no further attempts have been uncovered.
In 2024, two years into investigations into the Macro Cosmos Corporation, it was found that a subsidiary of Macro Cosmos was able to unsuccessfully recreate Project Beast Killer, with another Type: Null having been produced. This Type: Null (dubbed 772-04) was placed into the care of Hideaway Sanctuary’s European branch, located in Paldea. After two escape attempts resulting in injury, the 772-04 was placed into the care of Aspen Sharma, who undergoes bi-monthly checks for both quality of life and to ensure that he is a fit trainer for the Type: Null. It is currently unknown whether Sharma will be keeping the Type: Null permanently.

Happy Memorial Day
Veterans and Active Service Members who support Conservatives and/or Trump, let's have a chat. I'm going to run a few things by you and see if they sit right with you....
If we're being honest here, when it comes to trusting Donald Trump on anything related to the military (or in general for that matter), maybe just don't. You've heard all this talk about how those on the left are "communists" or "fascists," meanwhile, for all you 2nd Amendment folk, here's Trump back in 2018 saying, "take the guns first, due process second."
Question: Did you know that Trump made his 2nd wife, Marla Maples, sign a prenup that would have cut off all child support if their daughter, Tiffany, joined the military? In fact, not a single member of Trump's family tree has ever served in the military; this spans 5 generations, and every branch of the family tree. Apparently, the whole reason his grandfather immigrated to America was to avoid military service.
In his 2015 biography, Trump says: “I felt that I was in the military in the true sense because I dealt with those people,” because he went to a military-style academy and that he has “more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military." Matter of fact, according to Trump, he knows more about ISIS than American generals.
This self-proclaimed "military genius intellect" in action?
In 2017, he sent commandos into an ambush due to lack of intel and then sent contractors in to pick them up, resulting in a commando being left behind, tortured, and executed. Trump reportedly approved the mission because "Bannon told him that Obama didn’t have the guts to do it."
When retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal criticized Trump on his withdrawal of troops from Syria, Trump attacked him saying that he "got fired like a dog by Obama" and is "known for [a] big, dumb mouth." Let's not even get into the botched Afghanistan withdrawal...Oh, and it was definitely strategic and totally not an accident when he revealed the faces, names, and location of SEAL Team 5 on Twitter.
SIDE NOTE: If conservatives only remember 13 of the 2,420 service members that died fighting in Afghanistan over the past 20 years, then aren't they really just scapegoating your demographic?
If we're being frank, it's not just Donald that you shouldn't trust, either. It never has been, he's just a useful mouthpiece for the GOP and corporate America's impulses. Conservatives don't really care about the troops, if we're being honest with each other. You've been fed this lie that it's the liberals that hate you, when most of us don't (can't speak for everyone). You're just being used as a cudgel against people who are looking out for your own best interests. It's quite obvious and sad, actually, how much they love using the military as canon fodder for their propaganda.
When COVID reared its head in 2020, Capt. Crozier of the USS Theodore Roosevelt wrote a letter pleading with 10 navy officers (3 were Admirals within his chain of command, 7 were to other captains on the Roosevelt), asking to offload most of the sailors on the Roosevelt in order to allow for social distancing and the sanitizing of the ship due to how crowded it was. On March 30, 2020, the day Capt. Crozier sent his letter, cases peaked as 736 of 4,085 sailors on the ship had tested positive for COVID-19, a 25% infection rate. The following day, his letter was leaked to the press. Trump attacks Crozier's letter calling it “terrible” and "not appropriate” leading the Secretary of the Navy to remove Capt. Crozier from his post. Later in the pandemic, on June 24, 2020, the White House ended the National Guard's deployments to assist the American people during the COVID-19 pandemic, which just so happened to be the day before thousands of National Guard members would qualify for early retirement and education benefits under the Post-9/11 GI bill. Convenient.
Then, in the midst of all that, he visits the troops deployed in Iraq and claims that he's giving them all a 10% raise and that it's their first raise in over a decade. False on both accounts. What actually happened was that he tried to give the military a raise that was lower than the standard living adjustment. Congress told him that idea wasn't going to work. Then, after Congress had to force him to give the military an actual raise, Trump of course lied about it, claiming that it was larger than Obama’s. (Not the first time, probably...)
This is just a guy who wants to claim he made the call, just to see his name pop up on the chyron. He admitted he believed that his administration's assassination of al-Baghdadi was more significant than the Obama administration's assassination of Osama Bin Laden.
Still think he's a patriot?
On October 8th, 2019, Trump planned to withdraw from the Open Skies treaty, giving Russia the ability to target our military aircraft. Then in 2020, the New York Times published an Op-ed on CIA intelligence claiming that Putin was paying the Taliban for the bounties he reportedly placed on US Soldiers heads, Trump said he never mentioned the rumors when meeting with Putin later that year. The validity of the intel has since been ruled inconclusive. Trump, however, also directed the CIA to share counterintelligence with their Russian counterparts despite the Russians also arming the Taliban.
Friendly reminder that in May 2019, Trump also got the bright idea to pardon war criminals Eddie Gallagher, Mathew Golsteyn, and Matthew Behenna. A few weeks later, on July 31, 2019, Trump ordered the US Navy to rescind the medals given to prosecutors who failed to convict Gallagher.
This is the same guy who demanded that US military chiefs stand next to him and made the U.S. Navy Blue Angels violate ethics rules by having them do a fly-over at his 4th of July campaign rally, really patriotic right? I mean, who else would be more preoccupied with an intelligence briefing when the leader of the free world could be ordering a milkshake? Does this sound like a "leader of men"? Because blocking a veteran group on Twitter because they criticized you and hurt your feelings, doesn't fit my mental image of "leader." Actually, kinda sounds more akin to a dictator than the Commander in Chief. Not to mention how often he likes to cozy up to dictators and autocrats.
For example: when the alt right protesters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, Trump demanded that the National Guard protect his supporters. Meanwhile, the US Army recently concluded that the DC National Guard misused their helicopters in 2020 when they flew them too low over BLM protestors, one reportedly "hovered under 100 ft."
Remember when Trump refused to sign his party’s funding bill, which caused the government to shut down from December 22, 2018 to January 25, 2019? This temporary shut down would force the members of the US Coast Guard to go without pay, otherwise they would be listed AWOL. This led to service members relying on food pantries to eat. Somehow, though, Trump's appointees ended up with a $10,000 raise.
But don't worry, it only took him 2 years of being in office and 154 vacation days at his various properties before he finally visited the troops in December of 2018. Later, the following June, Trump sent additional troops to the border to paint the fence for a better “aesthetic appearance.” Don't let this distract you from the fact that under his administration, we saw more illegal border crossings than before. (You know, just in case that was another reason you were planning on voting for him.)
Halfway through his presidency, he used troops as a political prop for optics during the midterms by sending them on a "phantom mission'' to the border and made them miss out on Thanksgiving with their families in 2018. Of course, in typical Trump fashion, he then called troops on Thanksgiving and told them he’s most thankful for himself. Even though he stopped using troops as a political prop immediately after the midterms, the troops remained in their muddy camps at the border.
Then, in early 2019, Trump tried diverting military housing funds to pay for the border wall, but a federal judge subsequently denied this. Later that July, SCOTUS ruled that Trump could in fact divert military housing funds to pay for his wall, as well as funding from military pensions and Afghan Security Forces.
That same July, Trump denied a US Marine with 6 years of service entry into the United States for his scheduled citizenship interview. The next month, his administration looked to change the policy which granted citizenship for children of deployed US troops. This change would no longer grant automatic American citizenship to children born overseas during US military deployments, including US troops posted abroad for years at a time.
Imagine coming to America to fight for a country that isn't yours on the promise of citizenship, only to be deported. But don't worry, your family isn't safe either! Trump once deported a spouse of a fallen US Army soldier killed in Afghanistan, leaving their daughter parentless. The US has thankfully overturned this as of April 16, 2019. His administration actually doubled the rejection rate for veterans requesting family deportation protections.
Not surprising, considering this is the same administration that deported veterans, too. Hell, ICE even tried to deport a US-born Marine. He later ordered the discharge of active-duty immigrant troops with good records who were already promised citizenship, just so he could say he was tough on immigration.
Or how about just before the 2018 holidays, when they discharged 2 Air Force members living with HIV? Or how his administration denied female troops access to birth control to reportedly "limit sexual activity"? In 2019, he even banned service members from serving based on gender identity, but this has since been reversed by the Biden administration.
Trump even urged the officials in Florida to not count mail-in votes, specifically those of the actively deployed.
You know, I kinda get the sense that Trump and his MAGA lackeys seem to simultaneously dislike and fetishize being in the military, because that seems to be all you are to them: drones, existing to shoot, be shot at, and die for America, a manifestation of their own gun fetish. The moment you remind them that you aren't just professional killers but human beings who need social services or housing benefits, they lash out.
Here's another FACT for you: over a decade, Trump sought to kick veterans of Fifth Avenue because he found them unsightly nuisances outside of Trump Tower. In 1991, he was even quoted saying, “While disabled veterans should be given every opportunity to earn a living, is it fair to do so to the detriment of the city as a whole or its tax paying citizens and businesses?”
During the Trump administration, the VA in Atlanta purged 200,000 veterans’ healthcare applications due to known administrative errors within VA’s enrollment process and enrollment system. When making changes to the VA at a meeting in Mar-a-Lago, Trump recruited Bruce Moskowitz, a Palm Beach doctor; Ike Perlmutter, the chairman of Marvel Entertainment; and Marc Sherman, an attorney; to run it. None of them have experience with the military or veterans. These shitheads ended up trying to sell veteran's medical records.
Trump increasingly privatized the VA, leading to longer waits and higher taxpayer costs. For example, in January 2016, Trump sent funds raised from a veterans’ benefit to the Donald J. Trump Foundation instead of the promised veteran’s charities. The foundation has since been ordered shut down because of fraud and Trump had to pay $2 million in damages as of November 2019.
When a man was caught swindling veterans’ pensions for high-interest “cash advances,” Trump’s Consumer Financial Protection Bureau fined him $1. As a reminder, the Trump administration’s goal was to dismantle the CFPB, installing Mick Mulvaney as the director, who publicly stated the bureau should be disbanded.
Eventually, his administration tried to slash disability and unemployment benefits for Veterans, and eliminate the Extraschedular Individual Unemployability (TDIU) from the VA. Trump even changed the GI Bill through his Forever GI Act back in 2018. This change caused the VA to miss veteran benefits, including housing allowances and forced many veterans to run out of food and rent.
Ironically, at one of his rallies in 2016, Trump accepted a Purple Heart from a veteran supporter in the crowd. He said to the crowd: “I always wanted to get the Purple Heart. This was much easier.” Earlier in 1998, Mr. Bone Spurs himself was quoted saying having unprotected sex was his "own personal Vietnam." I guess naturally, when it comes to stolen valor, no one knows it better than Trump.
Don't think his contempt stops when you've died for our country, either. He apparently could care less, unless he can make it about him. Once while at a cemetery to pay respects to the fallen soldiers on the anniversary of D-Day, Trump started his commemoration speech by attacking a private citizen, Bette Midler, following later with an attack on Robert Muller, former FBI special counsel and a Vietnam War veteran. (Speaking of Vietnam, did I mention that Trump had dodged the draft 5 times, 4 for college and 1 by having a doctor diagnose him with bone spurs?) Then later, while in Europe in 2018, he didn’t even attend a ceremony at a US cemetery commemorating the end of WWI due to the rain – every other world leader went anyway.
He's insulted Gold Star families. Both, Myeshia Johnson — a gold star widow and the Khan family—gold star parents, have negative stories about being contacted by Trump. To add salt to the wound, he even forgot a fallen soldier’s name during a call to his pregnant widow. In fact, under the Trump Tax Plan, some Gold Star families had to pay increased taxes on the death benefits they received. The surviving family of US Navy Lt. Cmdr. Landon Jones in particular, went from paying $1,100 in 2017 to $5,400 in 2019.
In an apparent attack directed at the late-Sen. John McCain, Trump said he doesn’t consider POWs heroes because they were caught. Specifically, he said he "prefers people who were not caught." I mean, Trump even turned away Navy Sailors from his 2019 Memorial Day speech in Japan because they were from the destroyer USS John S. McCain. Trump initially ordered the USS John S. McCain out of sight during his visit, which led to the ship’s name subsequently being covered. Then, on March 20, 2019, after Sen. McCain's passing, Trump complained that he was never thanked for the funeral. But really, how spiteful can you actually be?
Maybe it's because I'm such a lib, but the most damning for me, is the deafening silence if you're a POC veteran. Remember Army Spc. Vanessa Guillén? Remember 2nd Lt. Caron Nazario?
10 Benghazi investigations, 0 into the Fort Hood murders. Can you guess who blocked that? I wonder what conservatives would be saying about Lt. Nazario if he had happened to have kneeled next to Colin Kaepernick?
Conservatives seem to support and/or believe in an abstract, fetishized version of the troops, all fueled by handshakes, prayers and yellow ribbons. Y'all hear about how libs strip money away from the military, because "we don't care" or whatever Fox News is saying, right? Meanwhile, here's Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) sitting on the House Armed Service Committee and using his position on the committee to make over 90 trades of stock, some in a major defense contractor, earning millions of dollars in the process.
Do you honestly believe that any conservative, let alone Trump, thinks you should even have the benefits of healthcare?
$725 billion annual military budget, but instead everything goes to the NSA, the CIA, the DHS, ICE...How many times were we lied to about help coming with regards to the VA? This is the best help we can give our veterans? Is this a joke? “You can count on us to serve, but we can’t count on the VA to make a deadline,” as one veteran said. No one steals from service members while lying through their teeth like these MAGA conservatives or Trump!
Let's not pretend he's an advocate for mental health, either; look no further than Ashli Babbitt. Talk about being used as a political prop! (Sadly, nearly 1 in 5 of those arrested for storming the US Capitol have served.) They only seem to like you when you're a martyr, it seems. But he's just pulling on your heart strings, making you feel like this is the next Pat Tillman.
Do you ever ask yourself why it always seems to always suddenly shift from "lives spent" to "lives wasted" whenever the other guy's in office?
Speaking of lives being used for political gain, how many of you enlisted after 9/11? Never forget how the GOP fought tooth and nail to not have to pay for 9/11 first responders medical treatments.
Bennington College published documents showing the US military ordered the clandestine burning of over 20m pounds of AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) and AFFF waste between 2016-2020, emitting these toxins into the air and onto nearby communities, farms, and waterways.
Is this the America that you signed up to fight for? Cuz if not, then vote like it.
Here's to hoping y'all read this and choose to make a difference again.

DISSENT MAGAZINE
Last summer, soon after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Kansans turned out in record numbers to reject a ballot amendment that would have stripped the right to abortion from the state’s constitution. The overwhelming “no” vote—59 to 41 percent—was followed by similarly promising results in the midterm elections. In November, voters in Michigan, California, and Vermont affirmed the right to legal abortion, and Kentuckians and Montanans rejected anti-abortion amendments. Support for abortion rights helped Democrats win up and down the ballot. Across the country, Americans asserted what advocates have known for years: if voters could decide, abortion would be legal.
These victories have been much celebrated—and for good reason. The amendments that enshrined legal abortion are helping women and pregnant people access lifesaving healthcare. They also demonstrate that Democrats can loudly endorse abortion rights and win. The unequivocal results from Kansas, Michigan, and Kentucky should theoretically offer cautionary tales for anti-abortion politicians: you’d think it would be difficult for an elected official to criminalize abortion and keep his seat.
But the way we lost Roe illustrates the limits of such wins. Back in 2011, Mississippi voters resoundingly—58 to 42 percent—rejected a statewide ballot amendment that would have defined personhood from the moment of conception. But the Republican legislature kept discussing bills designed to ban abortion and passing laws that made it more difficult for physicians to perform the procedure. In 2018, the state legislature passed a law banning abortion after fifteen weeks. Even though lower courts uniformly decided that the ban was unconstitutional, the Supreme Court took the case, and in June last year, the new conservative majority upheld the Mississippi law and overturned Roe. Three days later, the Mississippi attorney general certified the state’s trigger law, banning abortion in the state.
The implications are clear: minority rule is a major obstacle to ensuring abortion rights.
As Lisa Corrigan, an expert on social movements and Professor of Communication and Director of the Gender Studies Program at the University of Arkansas, said last year, “There are no minority rights when the minority rules. Restrictions on voting rights and erosion of freedom of speech are essential to state rule. . . . The political minority is where the authoritarian impulses find expression.” In other words, when officials can act without public approval, they can further disenfranchise people who already have less power, including women and Black voters.
Many Republican state lawmakers across the country are embracing openly undemocratic rhetoric and policy, including endorsing voter suppression laws. And since the 1990s, Republican operatives have become more strategic about gerrymandering political maps. These strategies, which they accelerated in 2010 and 2020 (pivotal redistricting years), have given white, rural voters and their chosen lawmakers disproportionate power in Congress and state legislatures, incentivizing Republican leadership in states like Mississippi to favor fringe partisans when they set their agendas. In states such as Florida and Ohio, it is now functionally impossible for voters to swing control of the state legislature from Republicans, at least in the near future. Meanwhile, in November, Democrats lost control of the House—and any possibility of codifying Roe in Congress—by seven seats, after Florida drew maps that enabled Republicans to pick up four new congressional seats and the Supreme Court blocked orders from lower courts to force Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana to draw new majority-Black districts to satisfy the Voting Rights Act.
At the same time, the Republican Party (with the assistance of the Federalist Society) has filled the federal judiciary and Supreme Court with unelected ideologues who hold lifetime appointments. Unless national Democratic leaders make dramatic changes to the Court and its authority, including expanding the number of justices, those judges are poised to spend decades setting national precedents by upholding laws enacted by semi-autocratic state governments.

My personal ethics as a nature interpreter
As I've studied more in this program, my personal ethics have also grown as a nature interpreter. I didn't have the same strong ethical beliefs going into this class as I have now. My values and obligations towards nature have been rediscovered as a result of taking this course. I did have personal ethics about nature before taking environmental science classes and learning about nature interpretation, but they are more stronger and more varied now. My environmental ethics were very much what you may have heard before this class; I didn't litter and I was concerned about recycling, but now they go far deeper. Even while I still think those things are significant, my knowledge has grown to include a greater comprehension of how humans affect the environment.
While advancing my nature education, I have grown more conscious of the ethics of accessibility and inclusivity in the environment and in nature education. Many more people will become aware of their effects if environmental education is made more widely available. In communities where there may be a lack of natural knowledge, nature interpretation ought to gain more traction. Everyone should also get the chance to enjoy the outdoors and learn about the natural world.
As a nature interpreter, I also think it's critical to provide accurate, fact-based information. The public is assisted by interpreters in understanding the scientific and financial foundations of resource management (Beck et al., 2018, p.12). As interpreters of nature, it is our duty to stay up to date on scientific and practical issues pertaining to the natural world. As a nature interpreter, my ethics have developed to place a high priority on sharing what I know about the natural world. I had no idea how crucial it is to educate people about nature interpretation and the reasons why protecting it is so vital until I took this class. In my opinion, encouraging conservation and environmentally friendly behaviours is crucial to protecting ecosystems, and biodiversity, and minimizing the effects of human activity on the environment. One of the most exquisite things that nature has to offer is biodiversity.
Additionally, because of the special connections among species, the diversity of plant and animal life would diminish the wonder and allure of the natural world. By protecting them, we can extend the lifespan of the distinct and varied ecosystems. Ecosystems depend on biodiversity in order to function, despite their own diversity. We depend on ecosystems for clean water, air, and pollution control as well as climate regulation. Not only are they necessary for survival, but they are also a crucial first step toward establishing a connection with your surroundings. Human-caused carbon footprints have harmed the ecosystem. Some people may not be aware of their carbon footprint or the influence that humans have on the environment if they had little environmental education or were not raised in an atmosphere that emphasized preservation and conservation. That's why educating others about nature and how to perceive it is one of my personal ethics.
It is our responsibility as nature interpreters to encourage the moral preservation of the natural world while also encouraging people to have a personal connection with it. This is a crucial duty because nature interpreters should promote respect for the natural world in order to motivate conservation efforts and moral behaviour in relation to the environment. If someone is motivated to take the time to enjoy the outdoors, they could come to respect sustainability and conservation as well. As interpreters of nature, it is also our duty to adjust to changing requirements and learning methods. We need to be adaptable and change with research and education. Our knowledge and methods may need to change when new insights into sustainability and nature are discovered.
There are many useful methods for interpreting nature that might be used to encourage people in the future to cherish nature. Children love to utilize their imaginations and are frequently entertained by stories; they also enjoy believing that a forest is magical. Anybody, but especially kids, can be inspired to be creative when they hear stories told aloud in the outdoors. Engaging in hands-on activities is another captivating approach to encourage someone to get inspired and involved with nature. Approaching nature interpretation as a return to childhood is another way you can inspire children to become involved with nature. Whether you take a child on an adventure with friends and show them the pileated woodpecker, or you give them the tools they need to make healthy decisions, when on a hike with friends. Or something else, you are offering a spark to be fanned and developed (Hookyas, 2023). My parents encouraged me to explore with nature and utilize my imagination when I was little. Playing in the mud, the trees, or the creek was one of my favourite ways to pass the time when I was a child growing up in a house surrounded by forests. There were so many levels to the forest to discover, and I frequently figured out a method to mark my favourite locations with groups of sticks and pebbles so I could find them again. This did, in fact, ignite a spark in me that motivated me to mature and pursue my education in nature. This is why I relate to the perception of nature as a return to childhood.
I still cherish my ethics and views of how to perceive nature while I pursue my studies. As I go through life, I want to keep learning and encouraging others to get outside and discover why so many people work to preserve the environment. We are really fortunate to live in Canada, where there is an abundance of wildlife. We are fortunate to have a wide range of natural characteristics, including different kinds of fauna and the northern lights. Along with this obligation is the maintenance and protection of our ecosystems. I am passionate about ensuring that nature is recognized and conserved because I have this luxury. The interpretation of nature is a field that benefits from a diversity of viewpoints and methods. This means that everyone may find inspiration in their own unique facet of nature, and that there is no right or wrong way to spend time in nature. By selecting approaches that are in line with variety, interpreters help to create more harmonious and long-lasting connections between humans and the environment.

Lula’s Climate Actions Must Match His Rhetoric
Brazil’s president-elect has pledged to halt deforestation in the Amazon. He can’t do it alone.
“There is no climate security for the world without a protected Amazon,” Brazil’s president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, told a cheering crowd at climate talks in Egypt last month. He’s right: Limiting global warming requires saving the planet’s largest rainforest, which shriveled under outgoing president Jair Bolsonaro. To reverse the damage, Lula needs the world’s help — and must convince more Brazilians that fighting climate change is in their interest too.
In terms of planetary health, Bolsonaro’s tenure was disastrous. He made climate change a partisan debate and hollowed out agencies responsible for monitoring illegal mining, logging and burning in the Amazon. His actions resulted in the freezing of an international Amazon Fund dedicated to preserving the rainforest. A costly military campaign to fight fires there made little progress. Even with a slight reduction in 2022, deforestation surged to 11,400 square kilometers a year on average during Bolsonaro’s tenure, compared to 7,100 from 2015 to 2018. Parts of the forest now emit more carbon dioxide than they absorb.
As a candidate, Lula blasted Bolsonaro’s environmental record for harming Brazil’s image. He’s promised to host a summit of Amazon rainforest nations and has made overtures to countries like Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which also have large tropical forests, hoping to secure more generous international assistance for conservation efforts. In addition to pledging to name a dedicated climate envoy, Lula has repaired ties with former environment minister Marina Silva, a prominent green activist. In his first speech as president-elect, Lula vowed to fight for zero deforestation.
After the previous government’s neglect, Lula deserves credit for putting the Amazon and climate change back on the agenda — but he has little time to waste. His first priorities should be to revive forest oversight agencies, expand protections for indigenous people and lands, and crack down on surging violence in the Amazon region.

ISO 50001 Certification | Definition, Updated Benefits, Requirements & Procedure
ISO 50001 Certification is an innovative standard that has been implemented by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It serves as a prospectus for the companies, to persuade them about energy-efficient models. Oregon Legislative Session Prioritizes Housing and Drug Criminalization Over Environmental Policies
A Look at the Environmental Bills Introduced and Their Outcomes
The 2024 legislative session in Oregon was marked by a focus on housing regulations and drug criminalization, which resulted in environmental policies taking a back seat. Despite efforts to strengthen wildfire resiliency and promote clean energy, many of the proposed bills failed to pass. However, some measures were successful, including legislation to support wildfire survivors and the divestment of state worker pension funds from coal companies. This article provides an overview of the key environmental bills introduced during the session and their current status.
youtube
Forests and Wildfires
Multiple bills aimed at helping Oregonians prepare for and fight wildfires failed to gain traction. However, one bill that limits taxes on wildfire survivors is heading to the governor's desk for approval. This bill exempts wildfire survivors from paying income taxes on settlements and compensations received from wildfire-related lawsuits. It applies to wildfires declared as disasters by state or federal agencies from 2018 onward.
Agriculture and Farmworkers
The major point of debate in agricultural legislation centered around canola production in the Willamette Valley. Lawmakers voted to extend the current 500-acre cap on canola production until Jan. 2, 2028, after failing to reach a compromise on allowing genetically engineered canola. Additionally, a bill supporting housing development and stability, including for immigrant workers, was passed as part of an Emergency Housing Stability package. However, funding for a program assisting agricultural workers affected by extreme heat or smoke was not approved.
Renewable Energy & Transportation
Despite reservations from tribes, the fishing industry, and some community members, federal officials are moving forward with offshore wind energy projects off the coast of Coos Bay and Brookings. The Oregon Legislature passed a bill outlining guidelines for the development of these projects, emphasizing collaboration with affected communities and tribes. Another bill aims to remove barriers to battery storage projects, which are crucial for the clean energy transition.
State Government & Business Investments around Climate Change
In an effort to influence climate change, lawmakers passed a bill that directs the divestment of state retirement investments from coal companies. However, a bill supporting clean energy spending by state agencies did not receive enough votes.
Fish & Wildlife Legislation
Legislators allocated funding to protect marine life in Oregon's five marine reserves, providing the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife with approximately $895,000 for conservation efforts. However, a bill that would have funded programs monitoring wildlife diseases and invasive species, as well as creating a wildlife coexistence program, did not pass.
Planning for Disaster, Protecting Access to Parks and Outdoor Spaces
Legislation was passed to protect access to outdoor recreation by adjusting the legal definition of "recreation" to include walking, running, and bicycling. This change was prompted by a lawsuit that raised concerns about public trail closures. However, a bill focused on planning for toxic chemical risks in the event of a megaquake did not advance. The 2024 legislative session in Oregon saw a prioritization of housing regulations and drug criminalization over environmental policies. While efforts to strengthen wildfire resiliency and promote clean energy were largely unsuccessful, some bills did pass, such as those supporting wildfire survivors and guiding offshore wind energy projects. The session highlights the ongoing challenges of balancing competing priorities and the need for continued advocacy for environmental protection in future legislative sessions.

ASSESS: Blogpost 4 - Meaningful Engagement
Namibia has so much wildlife and that causes a lot of poachers. Elephant numbers in Africa have decreased as a result of poaching. Due to agriculture's destruction of their habitat and even the ecosphere, the population of other species has decreased. The media's and government’s efforts alone will not be enough to reverse the fall in these species' numbers. To prevent the animals from ruining the farms and to rescue and protect the injured wildlife, Namibians built wildlife sanctuaries after realizing the issue.
One of these wildlife refuges is the Harnas Wildlife Foundation, a former cow farm that Marieta van der Merwe converted into a wildlife rescue facility after she saved a vervet monkey that was injured there in 1978. The Harnas Wildlife Foundation has been enlisting volunteers from all around the world to assist and feed these sick and injured animals since 2006.
My professional specialties can advertise these locations dedicated to protecting wildlife. As a media student, I may publish articles or videos on websites to inform people all around the globe that Namibia has volunteer opportunities. However, I also need to cooperate with the tour operators. I'll promote wildlife conservation excursions, and the tour operators will decide on the schedule and costs to draw in volunteers who don't want to make travel arrangements plans.
Increasing the number of individuals who are aware that tourists may volunteer to conserve wildlife in Namibia would help the country's tourism sector and increase global awareness of wildlife. Poaching and cruelty to animals will decline as long as the majority of people in the world are worried about wildlife.

BY MARK JOSEPH STERN
The Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority carved a huge loophole into the federal prohibition against machine guns on Friday, striking down a bump stock ban first enacted in 2018 by the Trump administration. Its 6–3 decision allows civilians to convert AR-15–style rifles into automatic weapons that can fire at a rate of 400–800 rounds per minute. One might hope a ruling that stands to inflict so much carnage would, at least, be indisputably compelled by law. It is not. Far from it: To reach this result, Justice Clarence Thomas’ opinion for the court tortures statutory text beyond all recognition, defying Congress’ clear and (until now) well-established commands. As Justice Sonia Sotomayor explained in dissent, the supermajority flouts the “ordinary meaning” of the law, adopting an “artificially narrow” interpretation that will have “deadly consequences.” This Supreme Court will be squarely at fault for the next mass shooting enabled by a legal bump stock.
Friday’s decision, Garland v. Cargill, is not a Second Amendment case. The plaintiffs do not (yet) argue that the Constitution guarantees a right to own bump stocks. Rather, they claim that the Trump administration stretched existing law too far when it outlawed bump stocks following the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. The gunman committed that massacre with the assistance of a bump stock, allowing him to murder 60 people in 10 minutes from 490 yards away, the deadliest single-gunman mass shooting in U.S. history. To use this device, a gunman attaches it to his AR-15, then holds his finger on the trigger and leans forward to maintain pressure on the bump stock. A semiautomatic requires the shooter to pull the trigger to fire each round. When done correctly, by contrast, “bump firing” can then unleash a spray of bullets without repeated pulls of the trigger, and at the rate of an automatic weapon. This barrage is audible in many videos of the Las Vegas shooting; victims were mowed down in rapid succession because the bump stock enabled nonstop fire.
For years, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives had been monitoring these devices; the agency found some unlawful, depending on their precise mechanisms, but did not take a formal position overall. The Las Vegas shooting prompted ATF to conclude that bump stocks transform semiautomatic rifles into machine guns, rendering them illegal under a long-standing federal statute. That’s because this law bans “any part designed and intended solely and exclusively” for “converting a weapon into a machinegun.” And a “machinegun” is defined as any firearm that fires “automatically” by “a single function of the trigger.” After extensive deliberation, ATF found that bump stock–equipped rifles do exactly that.
Now the Supreme Court has decided that it understands firearms better than the ATF. Thomas’ majority opinion reads like the fevered work of a gun fetishist, complete with diagrams and even a GIF. The justice, who worships at the altar of the firearm, plainly relished the opportunity to depict the inner workings of these cherished tools of slaughter. (It’s no surprise that he borrowed the images from the avidly pro-gun Firearms Policy Foundation.) To reach his preferred result, Thomas falsely accused ATF of taking the “position” that bump stocks were legal, then “abruptly” reversing course after the Las Vegas shooting. This account is dead wrong: ATF took a careful, case-by-case view of different bump stock–like devices as gunmakers developed them, deeming some permissible and others unlawful. The gun industry pushed these devices into the mainstream by deceiving ATF about their purpose; in one case, for instance, a manufacturer won approval from the agency by claiming a bump stock was designed to accommodate people with limited hand strength—then turned around and marketed it as the next best thing to a machine gun.
After wrongly accusing the agency of a politically motivated about-face—and using this charge to discount its expertise and authority—Thomas adopted a highly technical interpretation of the statute that does not align with its text. A “single function of the trigger,” he wrote, does not mean a single pull of the trigger, but rather a complete “cycle” of the spring-loaded hammer inside the gun. Because the hammer (rapidly) resets to its original position between shots, Thomas concluded, “bump firing” involves more than “a single function of the trigger.” And because the shooter must “actively maintain” a particular stance to put pressure on certain parts of the weapon, the justice wrote, the resulting fire is not truly “automatic.”
Sotomayor’s dissent, joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, rebuts this butchering of the text in a tone that toggles between scathing and mournful. She pointed out that when Congress first banned “machineguns” in 1934, their “internal mechanisms” “varied enormously”: Some used triggers, others buttons; some relied on the shooter’s backward pressure on the weapon, while others harnessed the recoil produced by a bullet’s discharge. “To account for these differences,” Sotomayor wrote, “Congress adopted a definition” that encompassed all guns that fire continuously without any need for the shooter to reengage the trigger. That had, until Friday, been the ordinary meaning of “automatic” fire. Extensive records of congressional debate around the 1934 bill confirms beyond a doubt that lawmakers intended to codify this definition. And “evidence of contemporaneous usage overwhelmingly supports that interpretation,” too.
Yet the Supreme Court has now replaced this near-century-old understanding with a narrow, highly technical one that lacks a basis in statutory text. By doing so, Sotomayor noted, the majority “arrogates Congress’s policymaking role to itself.” Its indefensible decision “eviscerates Congress’s regulation of machineguns,” “enables gun users and manufacturers to circumvent federal law,” and “hamstrings the government’s efforts to keep machineguns from gunmen like the Las Vegas shooter.”
And why? Yes, a deep current of gun fetishism runs through Thomas’ opinion. But so, too, does an arrogant skepticism of federal agencies like ATF and the experts who staff them. The majority snidely casts aside ATF’s interpretation in favor of its own amateur conception of how a true machine gun operates. In the process, it does serious damage to American democracy, disobeying a congressional mandate and overriding a decision by the executive branch, which—unlike the judiciary—is accountable to the people.
Yes, Congress can go back to the drawing board and enact a broader law that sweeps in bump stocks. (It won’t, because Republicans will block any such proposal.) That’s what Justice Samuel Alito advised in a concurrence on Friday, urging lawmakers to patch the loophole that he helped to create. But Congress shouldn’t have to correct the Supreme Court’s mistakes. On the rare occasions when it can overcome gridlock, the legislative branch should not have to expend time fixing laws that SCOTUS broke. And the rest of us should not have to worry that the justices, cocooned in their ever-expanding security details, will cavalierly subject us to the prospect of mass slaughter. To the conservative supermajority, this case is about word games and diagrams. To the future victims of bump stock–enabled shootings, it is a matter of literal life and death.

More effective protected areas needed to halt biodiversity loss

More effective protected areas needed to halt biodiversity loss
Protected natural areas of the UK are struggling to halt declines in insects and spiders that have occurred over the past 30 years, according to a new study led by researchers from the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH).
Nature reserves, Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), Special Areas of Conservation and other forms of protected habitat have long been regarded as a key tool in conservation efforts to preserve and restore natural habitats.
But the new study, which collated nearly one million records for more than 1,230 invertebrate species between 1990 and 2018, suggests these protected areas are just as susceptible to the wider declines in biodiversity occurring across the country.
The authors found that protected areas were richer in species than unprotected areas of the country, but both areas have suffered similar rates of decline in native insects and spiders over the past 30 years.
Pollinators, such as bees and hoverflies, have suffered particularly severe declines, according to the findings.
The results suggest that while protected areas are helping to conserve valuable habitats and the species within them, they need more assistance to tackle wider threats posed by climate change, pollution and invasive species that are causing biodiversity loss across the country.
“We see parallel trends for invertebrates in both protected and unprotected areas,” said Dr Rob Cooke, an ecological modeller at UKCEH and lead author of the study. “It is worrying, as you would expect species to show more positive trends in protected areas.”
The declines found in the study equate to the loss of more than three species per decade for protected areas and less than two species per decade for unprotected areas.
The study, which is published in the journal Biological Conservation, used data from a number of different invertebrate recording schemes across the UK that contained observations of ants, bees, hoverflies, ladybirds, spiders and wasps. Dr Cooke, together with UKCEH colleagues Dr Francesca Mancini, Dr Robin Boyd, Dr Nick Isaac and researchers at the University of Sheffield, then examined changes in biodiversity through the study period.
They found there were almost double the number of rare species in protected areas compared to unprotected parts of the UK. The trends of these rare species also remained stable in both protected and unprotected areas, suggesting they were benefiting from conservation efforts. But the authors found strong declines for common species, especially in protected areas.
Dr Cooke said: “Protected areas are often designated specifically to help rare species. But the more common species appear to be falling through the cracks. It should serve as a warning as today’s common species can be tomorrow’s rare species.”
The researchers conclude that the large number of protected areas around the UK could play a bigger role in the future. Protected areas have supported some notable conservation success stories, such as the bittern, the ladybird spider and the chalkhill blue butterfly. But the authors suggest more can be done to ensure protected areas are benefitting all of the country’s biodiversity. They say evidence-based policies, targets and management focused more on the effectiveness, rather than just the coverage of protected areas, may be needed.
Dr Cooke added: “I think the positive thing we can take from this is that we have a clear opportunity to make protected areas better for biodiversity.”
Notes:
The study showed that between 1990-2018:
Occupancy of all invertebrates in protected areas declined by 12.8% while in unprotected areas it declined by 11.5%.
Pollinators declined by 17.5% in protected areas and 20.3% in unprotected areas
Common species declined by 12.8% in protected areas and 6% in unprotected areas
The study collated data from groups of species to improve the accuracy of the modelling results. This meant there was less certainty over exactly how much individual species have declined or improved over the study period. But examples of rare species that have benefited from being in protected areas include the ivy bee, the red-headed ladybird, ruby-tailed wasp and jumping spider species.
Common invertebrates that have declined in protected areas are the two-spot ladybird, 10-spot ladybird, seven spot ladybird, the common marsh hoverfly, the Orange-legged Furrow bee, the Cuckoo wasp, the common Candy-striped spider and forked pirate spider.
The types of protected areas that were included in this study were Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), Special Areas of Conservation, Special Protection Areas, Ramsar Sites, National Nature Reserves, Local Nature Reserves.

how to open a marijuana dispensary in Canada.
Opening a marijuana dispensary in Canada is a complex process that requires extensive knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements. It also involves understanding the different types of marijuana products available and how to operate a successful business. This guide outlines the steps involved in opening a marijuana dispensary, including obtaining licenses, financing your venture, and setting up a shop. With careful planning and hard work, you can make your dream a reality and open a successful marijuana dispensary in Canada.
Are Cannabis Dispensaries Legal in Canada?
You can open a legal cannabis dispensary as of October 17, 2018.
Bill C-45 (Cannabis Act) was officially passed in Canada, allowing for the cultivation and retail sale of cannabis for recreational purposes. Recreational cannabis retail and distribution fall under provincial (rather than federal) jurisdiction; in other words, each province has a different framework for licensing retailers.
A business plan, on the other hand, is an essential tool for anyone considering applying for a cannabis sales license. Sharp can assist you in submitting a professional cannabis business plan to Health Canada, increasing your chances of approval.
How Do Dispensaries Work?
Dispensaries operate similarly to any other retail business that sells high-value merchandise; however, there are some distinct differences, which include the following:
It is recommended that you upgrade the air conditioning or HVAC system to ensure that the air circulating in the store is cleaned with a HEPA filter to reduce any odors from your products.
To protect your assets, conduct an ID check on all patrons to ensure they are of legal drinking age, which varies by province. Some provinces have decided against dispensaries; however, you may wish to seek legal counsel regarding the Allard case and other cannabis-related case laws.
A good point-of-sale (POS) system may be not only useful but also required in order to track what each customer purchases. A POS will undoubtedly assist you in marketing to your existing customers and may be required if the manufacturer or producer is required to issue a product recall.
Your employees will almost certainly need to have completed an "official" cannabis retailing course.
You will need to obtain municipal approval and a business license, so a politically aware business plan could be very useful.
Dispensaries: How Profitable Are They?
Dispensaries can be extremely profitable. The government's Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) predicts that cannabis sales will total 655,000 kilos in 2018. If retail pricing is only $10 per gram, cannabis retail sales in 2018 will be $6,550,000,000. Other experts have proposed higher figures than the historically conservative PBO. Deloitte, for example, predicts an $8.7 billion cannabis market.
The initial investment could be as low as $50,000 plus inventory, depending on the quality of the dispensary. In a good retail area, you might invest around $200,000 in leasehold improvements, security systems, and display cases, among other things. Based on the results of US cannabis retailers, a mid-range dispensary leasing about 1,500 square feet in a good retail area could easily expect to gross $150,000 to $200,000 per month and net 10% to 20% of those revenues.
Where Can You Buy Cannabis Legally?
Where you live determines how you obtain legal cannabis. Here's a breakdown of recreational cannabis retail in Canadian provinces by private, public (government), and online:
In addition to licensing private retailers, British Columbia (BC), Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Yukon (YT), and Nunavut (NU) will open some of their own provincial cannabis stores.
There will be no provincial government stores in Ontario (ON), Alberta (AB), Saskatchewan (SK), or Manitoba (MB).
Quebec (QC), New Brunswick (NB), Nova Scotia (NS), Prince Edward Island (PE), and the Northwest Territories (NT) all have control over their retail environments and use a Crown Corporation model in which the province owns both distribution and retail stores.
Except for Manitoba and Saskatchewan, which will have online sales by the provincial government, online sales of recreational cannabis are permitted across the country in all provinces and territories through private retailers.
One month after recreational cannabis was legalized, approximately 120 private, government, and online dispensaries were legally operating across Canada.
Cities are the third tier of government, following the provincial and federal governments. It is entirely up to the senior governments, both provincial and federal, to enforce the law in each city.
What is the legal purchasing and selling age?
Except for Quebec and Alberta, all Canadian provinces have set the minimum age for purchasing recreational cannabis at 19 years old. Private retailers must purchase all cannabis inventories from their provincial government distributor, which varies by province. Saskatchewan is an exception, as private companies will be permitted to distribute cannabis to Saskatchewan retailers.
What do you have to offer?
The Cannabis Act was amended to allow adults to consume cannabis edibles and concentrates within 12 months of cannabis legalization in October 2018. At the very least, you would be selling the following products, which are currently (Summer 2018) produced by Licensed Producers:
Cannabis oil and dried cannabis (bud). In Canada, the maximum legal strength of cannabis oil is 30 mg THC per mL. When compared to high-quality hash oil, for example, hash oil contains 90% THC. One gram of this hash oil contains 900 mg of THC, which is equivalent to 30 times the THC found in one ml of legal cannabis oil.
Cannabis concentrates such as shatter, wax, and hash oil are popular in most dispensaries despite the fact that they are not currently legal. Cannabis oils that are currently legally available are too diluted to be smoked or vaped. Smokers, dabbers, and vapers require a stronger product.
Not currently legal - Edibles are extremely popular among people who prefer not to smoke or vape cannabis. Cannabis cookies, brownies, and other edibles allow people to consume cannabis without inhaling it.
Pre-rolled cannabis cigarettes/joints are becoming popular in the United States and in Canadian dispensaries. They are not only convenient for the consumer, but they can also be very profitable if the dispensary makes its own pre-rolls using a low-cost rolling/filling machine.
CBD products may be legal; cannabis creams (topicals) and bath bombs are also popular. Topicals are commonly used to relieve localized pain, particularly arthritis and joint pain.
Vaporizers, dabbing rigs, bongs, and rolling papers are all essential. These accessories are an integral part of most dispensaries' product lines and are part of the cannabis culture.
Conclusion:
Opening a marijuana dispensary in Canada can be an exciting and profitable venture. However, it is important to ensure that the necessary steps are taken in order to legally and safely operate the business. It is recommended that those who are interested in opening a marijuana dispensary research local laws, seek professional advice, and follow all applicable regulations when setting up their dispensary.
