So both my parents drink coffee, but I have to say- it was probably my father’s fault. My dad used to buy that instant cappuccino/Frappuccino powder stuff- you know, the “vanilla” flavor or whatever. Now, he drank it occasionally, but the whole container was really for me tbh- he had his fancy Kona coffee, I got the instant sugar stuff, it worked out. Mind, I was like 11 when I started so uhh. Yeah.
Anyways, man didn’t want to buy hot chocolate but he did buy me coffee, and since I was freezing all the goddamn time, horrible at mornings, but also needed to be up at ungodly times (5am wakeups my beloathed), I would drink the coffee. The caffeine addiction didn’t really set in until 7th grade tho, because there was a McDonald’s on my way to school. So, if I was running late, or I just wanted the sugary drink, I would pop in for some breakfast/lunch and inevitably get one large McDonald’s “Frappuccino” monstrosity, absolutely loaded with whip cream, syrups, and sugar.
Anyways, it took me until last year to realize that I actually don’t even like coffee tbh- caffeine gives me migraines, and I’m very sensitive to the stuff. Turns out, I just really like vanilla drinks and those spiced (chai/“pumpkin”) drinks, so I thought I liked coffee ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
People who drink coffee: why did you start?
I don't drink coffee and I've never wanted to, but that's obviously ~not normal~, so I'm curious why most people do start drinking it.

There is easy low hanging fruit here, especially about the US and salty tea. And I'm so SO tempted.
But also I'm super in to tea and I'm bored.
The perfect cup of tea is how you want to drink it, and if you do not LIKE tea then drinking it a different way, or a different kind of tea, vastly changes it.
A pinch of salt makes things less bitter, this trick also works with coffee. But other things that affect taste are tempriture, length of time it brews, where the tea was grown, the climate, the soil, and how big the leaves are. Some of the cheapest tea has little more than dust in the tea bag while more expensive teas you will notice have more structure to the leaves.
Tea brewed in colder tempeitures needs longer and creates a different taste. It may require more tea to get the specific flavour you want, and generally it is less bitter for it. Similar thing to spices where if you cook them, use them hot, toast them first, etc, you get a different set of flavours to using them cold.
Like wine, tea can have lots of flavour profiles and colours. Assam for example is very dark, malty, and strong, it can get quite bitter. Ceylon is much lighter. Darjeeling is good with lemon, but Assam is better with milk, in my humble opinion. Lapsang Sushong is very smokey. Earl Grey
Most people will drink a mix. English breakfast is usually a mix of Assam, Ceylon, and Kenyan. Earl Grey is flavoured with bergamot.
White, green, and black tea all come from the same plant, just different parts of it, treated differently. Black tea can take a higher tempriture, but boiling water on green and white tea will scorch the leaves and make it very bitter. Agitating the tea can also have this effect as it releases more tannin.
As a general rule there is a tea for everyone, and a way to drink it that you will enjoy, whether that's hot, cold, mixing it with spices, flavourings, fruit, milk, sugar, lemon, and yes, even a pinch of salt.
I would not, however, recommend tea that has been in the Boston harbour.

Reblog for bigger sample sizes. I know there are LOTS of types of teas out there, and I tried to cover most of the ones I could think of (I split up herbal because there are so many different flavor profiles!)
Also, I know the names might vary based on where you live and there are a lot more subcategories than what I listed. If there are any that I haven't listed that you love, please let me know!

Dunes & Waters, part 7
PART 1 • PREVIOUS PART • NEXT PART
“What happened to your hand?”
Again, Black is already in the kitchen, smoking and hanging out of a window, when Remus wakes up.
“Paper cut.”
“You bandaged yourself up like that for a paper cut?”
“I’m prone to infections.”
“Merlin,” Black definitely doesn’t believe the excuse, but that’s the point really. Say something so stupidly improbable and the question of what happened to him becomes second to why won’t he tell me.
People are fickle creatures like that, Remus knows. Selfish even in their concern. He’s not blaming Black for it – they don’t know each other; he’s got no reason to be worried for Remus. Especially not with the way their interactions have been going. It’s a dually convenient thing for Remus: he has no desire to get close to Black, or to be gotten close to. And lack of interest means lack of questions when he has to disappear for a couple nights.
Black finishes his smoke, putts it out. The silver ring on his finger reflects the morning light as he lights another.
“Why didn’t you get your own cigarettes yesterday?”
“I don’t smoke,” Black replies, taking a deep drag and flicking ash out of the window.
“Evidently.”
“Well… only sometimes. Socially.”
There are four butts in the makeshift ashtray by Black’s knee.
“The people keeping you company, they still here with us?”
“The cat is out there again.”
Remus sticks on the kettle, adding in enough water for two cups. To save himself having to repeat the process. “You’re smoking with the cat?”
“Better conversationalist then some people.”
Remus doesn’t raise to the bait. It’s nothing he’s not heard before. Get to the point and why are you telling me about this and look, I’ll listen later but I’m really way too tired now, alright?
The kettle boils, the tea brews. Two mugs, two sachets of Assam. Two sugars and milk for him, black for Black (Remus snickers to himself). An almost perfect builders’ brew. As each morning, Remus takes a moment to miss the box of Yorkshire teabags he’s got in his office back in London.
The crossword has been butchered again. “This isn’t even close to being correct,” he waves it in Black’s direction, “if you want to have a go you could just ask the reception to send up an extra paper.”
Black takes his tea and his spot at the table. “That thing makes no sense.” There is a defensiveness in his posture, an undercurrent of something ready to explode. It’s evident he’s not used to being wrong footed.
“Sure, it does,” Remus dismisses, “you just don’t understand it.”
One raised eyebrow, eyes thinning. There’s that same bit of anger – diminished and contained – that he brought at the market. Remus is sensitive to changing tides, a part of the moon always with him, and Black is like the sea. He can smell it on him, the way his magic builds up and crackles about the fingertips.
Black, however? Doesn’t seem to notice.

I used to be the boy who never touched a cup of tea, only indulging when elders insisted. But now, I’ve transformed from a tea hater to a tea lover. I can’t resist its delightfully exhilarating flavour anymore.

A3! Main Story: Part 4 - Act 16: Crossing Paths - Episode 2: "Today's Special"
Tumblr media
Nakamura: “I apologize for not letting you know earlier. I’ll be awaiting your manuscript.”
Homare: Hm, you can leave it to me.
Nakamura: “I apologize for disturbing you.”
[Call hangs up]
Homare: (The meeting ended earlier than expected.)
Homare: (I could simply return home, but I do feel like taking my time and enjoying a cup of tea.)
Homare: (Oho? The café over yonder seems quite pleasant… I shall stop by, seeing as I’m already here.)
-
[Door jingling]
Shopkeeper: Welcome. Are you alone? Feel free to take a seat over there.
Homare: …
Homare: (Hmm, it is indeed quite pleasant and relaxing… And they offer a wide variety of teas. I shall stick with a traditional choice—)
Homare: Hm?
Homare: (“Today’s Special”? It seems to be some sort of blended tea, but it’s much cheaper than the rest of the menu…)
Shopkeeper: Are you ready to order?
Homare: What may this “Today’s Special” be?
Shopkeeper: Ahh, that’s something like a special item on our menu… It’s a flavored tea brewed by one of our part-timers.
Shopkeeper: It all started when one of our regulars agreed to become his practice subject…
Shopkeeper: He’d make something unique every once in a while, and we added it to the menu as it was rather well-received and attracted quite a few fans.
Shopkeeper: Its contents are a secret, so if you’d like something specific, I recommend you try a different—
Homare: No, I am quite intrigued. I will have one “Today’s Special”.
Shopkeeper: Coming right up.
Homare: *humming*
Homare: (Oh my, there are picture books displayed here. This illustration looks quite familiar…)
Homare: ——
Homare: (This is…)
[Walking]
Tumblr media
Kureha: Thank you for waiting. This is “Today’s Special”.
Homare: Thank you.
Homare: … Mhmhm, I taste Darjeeling with a hint of Assam. The milk pairs quite well, too. How truly delicious.
Kureha: Naturally, since I created this blend.
Homare: Hm, there is a soft scent of… mint, jasmine, and perhaps a few more… A slightly unusual combination, but quite light on the nose.
Homare: It almost makes me want to dance…
Kureha: !! You can tell? The idea behind this blend was a fairy dance party!
Homare: Hm, how wonderful. I can almost envision the world you speak of when I close my eyes… Inspiration is coming to me!
Kureha: !! You’re the first customer to understand it to this extent…!
Kureha: The tea leaves are packed with the climate, season and all other natural elements of their place of origin, and they come together to create a world of their own…
Kureha: Just by changing one of those elements, the scenery you envision could change completely… The world has infinite possibilities… and so does tea!
Homare: Hm. I could sense the artistry of your tea with a single sip. It’s no wonder this “secret menu” of yours has garnered fans.
Kureha: Thank you very much!
Homare: Could I take some home as a souvenir?
Kureha: As the tea leaves change every day, we don’t sell any. But we could give you some of our leftovers!
Homare: Thank you. I would like to let my fellow troupe members taste a bit of this, you see.
Kureha: I apologize for overstepping, but… what kind of work do you do?
Homare: As I am a poet with a wide love of all arts, I am also an actor. Have you heard of the theater company called MANKAI Company?
Kureha: Ah, I have. My friend is a big fan–
Homare: I am part of the Winter Troupe. Perhaps that friend of yours is a fan of Homare Arisugawa?
Kureha: Uhmm, I don’t think so.
Homare: Oh dear… That means I still have a ways to go as an actor.
Kureha: That reminds me. I did once pick up something one of the actors from the Summer Troupe lost.
Homare: Ohh, that was Misumi-kun, if I’m not mistaken… So you were the one that picked it up. That was right before their performance started, too, so things were quite frantic. You have my thanks.
Homare: Did you watch the Summer Troupe’s performance?
Kureha: No… My father does take me to watch performances with him, though we have yet to watch one of MANKAI Company’s…
Kureha: I’ve only watched videos of the first generation.
Homare: In that case, seeing as the Winter Troupe will be performing next, you should definitely come watch it along with your father and friend.
Kureha: Right… I’ll try inviting them.

ok i’m posting the cooks illustrated recipe for thai tea bc it’s the only thing sustaining me
7 tea bags assam black tea (or any strong black tea. If you have loose leaf do 7 tsp)
1 star anise (pod? one star thing)
1 cinnamon stick
1 tsp turmeric
Put it somewhere, a bowl maybe, and pour 3 cups of boiling water over it. Steep this for 15 minutes then strain.
They say to use 3 layers of cheesecloth and a fine metal strainer, but I don’t have that so I use coffee filters, but you must note that this will take forever and you will have to do it multiple times.
Anyways. Add 1 tsp vanilla extract and 1 tbsp sugar. Then add 1/3 cup of sweetened condensed milk.
This is the concentrate, and when you want to drink it do 1 part milk and 2 parts of the concentrate. And ice and whatever else you want to drink it with. You can add more sugar but I personally think it doesn’t need it.

So in commemoration of finishing my jacket, I also custom mixed an FellSans themed tea, since I’m a tea person, and will share the recipe in case anyone wants to try it.
The taste is something like a chai with a real hot and spicy kick at the end note. It tastes best when mixed with sugar, and becomes a pretty classic milk tea if you add milk to that.
The base should be an Assam tea. Mine happened to have blue corn flower mixed in, but that doesn’t change the flavors really.
The accents are rose buds, saffron, pumpkin spice seasoning, cardamom powder, and red pepper flakes.
The ratio should look like the first picture, with the bulk being tea and rose, and the rest being between a pinch to a couple shakes. Go light on pepper flakes. You want a warm after kick, not a hotpot broth.
Brew in boiling water for three minutes. Can be steeped up to three times.
Tell me if you try it out and what you think.
