Marvel United: A Pride Special #1. Art by Luciano Vechio.
I saw some discussion about this cover and people not recognizing all the characters... so I did the only logical thing and made a reading list. Here's a comic recommendation for every queer character on this cover!
Shela Sexton / Escapade: A trans mutant superheroine figuring out her place in a bigoted world In a subversion of the usual mutant metaphor, Shela's parents accepted her mutanthood wholeheartedly... only to disown her when she came out as transgender. You can read her debut in Marvel Pride 2022.
Natima Ngoza / Beisa: A trans woman born in Mohannda who fled to Wakanda when running away from her judgemental family. She's a love interest for T'Challa and a take on the Catwoman archetype. Read all about her in the underrated 2023 Black Panther run!
Cooper Coen / Web-Weaver: A Spider-hero from Earth-71490, Cooper Ceon saved his classmate/crush Peter Parker from a spider bite on a high school field trip... only to be bitten himself. You can read about an adventure of his on Fire Island in Marvel's Voices: Spiderverse.
Gwen Poole / Gwenpool: An aroace Marvel Comics superfan iseaki'd into the Marvel Universe. With the power of meta knowledge, she will find her own place in the canon she loves so much. You can read her realizing she's aroace in ARomancing of Gwendolyn Poole (get it?), part of the Love Unlimited Infinity Comic.
Jean-Paul Beaubier / Northstar: Gay French-Canadian mutant sports superstar and Marvel's first textually gay superhero. You can read about him taking on anti-mutant bigotry in his home country in Alpha Flight (2023).
Rachel Summers / Askani: The sapphic daughter of Scott Summers and Jean Grey from the Days of Future Past timeline. You can read about her and her girlfriend fighting bigots in the British wizarding community (I wonder what THAT could be an allegory for) in Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain.
David Alleyne / Prodigy: Bisexual mutant supergenius. New Mutant, Young Avenger, X-Men, and most recently a professor at Empire State University. You can read about him and his boyfriend in the Young Avengers arc of the Marvel's Voices Infinity Comic.
Bobby Drake / Iceman: Founding X-Men and jokester who realized he was gay later in life. Bobby... He's gay! You can read about him bringing Rogue home as a fake girlfriend to meet his bigoted parents in Uncanny X-Men #319. While this story is before he came out, I think it is an EXCELLENT showcase of his character.
Xuân Cao Mạnh / Karma: Lesbian mutant hero and founding member of the New Mutants. Depending on how you define "superhero," she's arguably Marvel's first lesbian hero. You can read about her relationship troubles, as well as her reunion with her once-lost brother, in Karma in Love, part of the Love Unlimited Infinity Comic.
Charlie Webber / Sun-Spider: A pansexual Spider-hero with EDS. Originally a fan-submitted Spider-sona, she's grown in relevance and even had a speaking cameo in Across the Spiderverse! You can read her story in Edge of Spiderverse #4.
Logan Lewis / Nightshade: Sapphic teen genius and legacy hero to the original Nightshade, a redeemed supervillain. You can read her solo adventures as part of the Marvel's Voices Infinity Comic.
Billy Kaplan / Wiccan: The gay son of the Scarlet Witch... to grossly oversimplify the situation. He also may kind of be God? Good for him! Read about him in Young Avengers (2013).
Teddy Altman / Hulkling: The gay son of Captain Mar-Vell and Skrull princess Anelle. A Skrull/Kree hybrid, he was sent to live on earth for his protection - y'know, Superman stuff. Read about his wedding to his husband Hulkling in Empyre!
Ms America Chavez: The multiverse-travelling latina lesbian of the Young Avengers, Ultimates, and West Coast Avengers. Read about her helping her CLOSE PLATONIC FEMALE FRIEND Kate Bishop raise the baby landshark Jeff in It's Jeff! Yes, that is my America recommendation. I also love her role in Ultimates, but this is funnier.
Aaron Fischer / Captain America: An unhoused gay man and champion of the marginalized, selected by Steve Rogers to have the title of Captain America. You can read about him in Avengers Academy.
Justin Jin / Kid Juggernaut: The Korean-Canadian gay himbo grandson of Jin Moon-Ho, the original Juggernaut who Cain Marko took the name/powers of. Read about him summoning Doctor Strange to ask him about PreP (yes, that happens explicitly on-panel - it is awesome) among other things in Avengers Academy.
Raven Darkhölme / Mystique: The shapeshifting sometimes-nemesis and sometimes-ally of the X-Men. While she may not care about things like "human lives" and "the law," she does harbor a lot of love for wife Destiny - as well as their adopted daughter Rogue and biological son Nightcrawler. There's a lot I could suggest here, but I'm going to pick Marvel's Voices: X-Men as I ADORE the Mystique/Destiny flashback story in that.
Kate "Kitty" Pryde: The original new teenager on the block, Kitty Pryde has had a LONG road to embracing her bisexuality. After literal decades of queercoding, you can finally read her dating a woman textually in the currently ongoing Exceptional X-Men (aka the best current X-book).

Time-Master Sword anon
I saw yo ur post abt the anon list and I’m so happy that you think abt me a lot :D also I hope your nausea goes away that’s the worst :( (take care of yourself and get some medicine if you haven’t already)
so umm on the x men there’s this couple of Cyclops and Jean grey, but plot twist this one’s a clone (the clone is referred to as Madelyn Prior)
so Cyclops and Madelyn have a baby but this baby named Nathanial Summer but gets kidnapped by Madelyn Priors creator Mr. Sinister and is put in this green stuff that’s a techno virus (which kinda ends up saving him if you know Nate Grey) but the techno virus is killing him and the only cure is in the future so bishop (who can only take the infant Nathan) takes him to the future where he can keep the techno virus under control with his powers where he can be trained by mother askani which turns out to be his sister. And during the events of the tv show (og x men show) Cable (Nathan) basically meets his parents but they’re not his parents yet bc they haven’t had Nate yet. And he’s also older than them (Which in the show (x men 97) is such a good scene when they find this out) anyways in the new show (x men 97) he meets them again and cyclops and Jean grey are like ‘holy shit that’s our son! Why didnt he tell is tho :(‘
ALSO IN THE FUTURE NATHAN GERS CONED AND THAT CLONE IS EVIL SO LIKE IT COULD BE DARK LINK??
So that’s their relation ship right
and my ass really went “Wow this Nate guy really sure is just like how Time and Wars are lol”
(So basically in this au Time is nathan
Warriors is Scott/Cyclops
and Jean grey/Madelyn prior I was thinking could be hw Zelda
and Stryfe (Nathan’s clone) could be dark link)
I have other roles for the chain including a Mask variant bc there’s another Cable/Nate but i think I ranted a bit to much lol
also you should watch x men 97/nf its really good and you don’t need to watch the old show to understand it :)
(sorry if this is unorganized I’m rlly tired rn lol)
i do feel a bit better now!! I think i just needed to lay down for a While
ALSO THATS REALLY COOL, ILL ADD THE SHOW TO MY WATCH LIST YOU GOT ME INTERESTED 👁️👁️

★ Cable (for Stryfe)
Their Relationships || Accepting
Tumblr media
There's a narrowing of his eyes at the mention of Cable, nose wrinkling and lips curling in an expression close to disgust. While he's been enjoying talking about his family, discussing 'siblings' is a sticking point and he hesitates. But he doesn't want to show weakness, thus it lasts only a moment. A blink. -- ❝While my family have yet to see it, Cable is naught but an inferior copy, one I have a tentative truce with- for the time being. And only for our father's sake.❞ There's more to it than that, complex feelings that he's not ready to face and likely never will be, given their tumultuous past and present rivalry - one sided as it might be. ❝He's been nothing but a thorn in my side since the beginning, before I even knew of his existence and while now there's.. little to complain about, the past is not so easily forgotten.❞ He will always be Dayspring, the Askani-son. Perhaps one day he'll be able to recognize that who they are, who Nathan is, saved him from the hands of Apocalypse. Saved him from a terrible fate offered to him as if it were a legacy. Today is not that day. -- ❝I loathe him, as he does me. That is the current standing of our relationship.❞

Cable #1
Exactly as cool as you'd hope/expect.
"Stryfe killed your wife and has stolen your son!!"
I'm new to 90s comics; Cable and Garrison Kane have become two of my favourite characters; they dominate here. I'm happy.
We open with Kane trapped a couple of thousand years in the future. (It's an Earth known to us as Askani World, and it's appeared a few times before.) His digging into Cable's past there alerts some bad guys, which leads to some fights where Kane kicks ass. Between battles, he's been hanging out with a band of freedom fighters called the Clan Chosen. (Hopefully, this new ongoing series takes place in the future - like KILLRAVEN - and we get to spend more time with these guys. They certainly make a solid first impression here.) Eventually, after only appearing in detailed flashbacks, Cable himself joins the party and they make a plan to blow something up. Count me in!
Wizard Top 100: #5.
Fabian Nicieza (3 of 12).
Art Thibert (1 of 3).
9/10

[Image of a man surrounded by a blue electric glow, running from an explosin. Caption boxes say, "My name is Nathan Dayspring Askani'son Summers. People call me Cable ... and I am a man running out of time." 'Cable' is written as a logo.
End ID.]
#where did he get those middle names - via @whetstonefires
Kieron, hopefully you were aware that you are not allowed to ask rhetorical questions about the X-Men when I'm around. Especially relating to the Grey/Summers family!
-
So, Nathan Christopher Summers was born to Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor. He's probably named (in universe) after Nathaniel Essex (Mr. Sinister), and Christopher Summers (Corsair) - Madelyne's creator and Scott's dad, respectively. Maddie is a clone of Jean Grey. Real world reason for his middle name is that Cable wasn't originally SUPPOSED to be Scott's kid, and they were calling the baby Chris at the same time his adult version was going by Nathan.
Jean comes back to life. Scott and Maddie break up. Jean and Scott get (tentatively) back together. Maddie goes missing, and Jean and Scott start raising her kid. Maddie gets possessed by a demon and tries to sacrifice Chris. Dies.
Then Apocalypse infects Chris with a techno-organic virus. He's getting turned into a robot. A lady, part of something called The Askani, comes from the future and says she can save him. But she has to take him to the future to do it.
Turns out, The Askani are a group created by Chris' sister, Rachel Summers, who has travelled to the future and now calls herself Mother Askani. Chris is prophesied to defeat Apocalypse, who rules this future. He is the 'Askani'son', their messiah-figure.
Rachel creates a clone of her little brother, in case she can't save him. Then dies. The clone is taken in by Apocalypse and becomes Stryfe. Awful dude.
Meanwhile, in the present, time has passed. Scott and Jean decide to get married. On their honeymoon, they get pulled to the future to raise their son, again. They're given constructed bodies, and live as Slym and Redd Dayspring, and Chris becomes Nathan Dayspring. They live in hiding from Apocalypse, travelling through the dystopia the future has become. They don't ever tell Nathan who they really are, acting as his adoptive parents, though he'll later have a pretty good idea.
They're murdered when he's 12. He grows up and marries a lady named Aliya, who becomes Aliya Dayspring. Nathan's mostly being called Askani'son now (and sometimes Cable? Maybe?), part of a group of rebels called the Clan Askani. Aliya takes on the codename Jenskot, in honour of his 'birth parents'. (No one's talking about Maddie.)
Stryfe captures Aliya, 9 months later she has a baby named Tyler Dayspring, and the Askani'son acts as the kid's dad. But Aliya is murdered, Tyler is abducted, and Askani'son's son ends up a brainwashed pawn of Stryfe. After Askani'son chooses to shoot Tyler to protect a member of Clan Askani, Tyler never forgives his dad.
The Askani'son ends up going into the past to try to stop Apocalypse before he comes to power. He goes by a variety of codenames, especially Cable, but sometimes admits to Nathan being his given name. Stryfe comes back to stop him. Tyler comes back to just ... make his life as miserable as possible as the villain Mr. Tolliver. This includes torturing Cable's girlfriend Domino while replacing her with a shapeshifter called Copycat.
When Jean and Scott eventually find out that Cable is their son, they call him Nathan Summers. He has a lot of complicated feelings about this, but eventually accepts it.
And then the students he's been mentoring (X-Force) start discovering all these names. And they think it's HILARIOUS. So we start getting jokes that just string them all together in longer and longer chains.
So that's why Cable is Nathan Christopher Dayspring Askani'son Summers. Don't know why this caption box forgot one. It was his first!
