I am not alright after watching X-Men 97 episode 8. My love of a certain large, half-metal, future-raised old man is consuming me, and I have QUESTIONS and THOUGHTS and OH GOD MADDIE.

It's been so long since I've seen Cable deeply entangled in a main plotline (damn you contemporary comics), but from the very first episode we're seeing Nate! When Jean (later revealed as Maddie) uses Cerebro, she sees baby Nate as well as adult Nate's words from Genosha. Right there! In the main plot! In the main emotional plot!

And then on Genosha, it's Maddie and Nate. And then there's absolutely everything in episode 8, the Summers Family episode!

But it's not just the fact that he's in the action. We're getting so much emotional fallout from this old man!!

I wonder if Nate remembers the telepathic message Maddie gave him as a baby? Does he remember the feeling of her love? Or did he grow up completely oblivious? (I know I'd certainly prefer the first one and lean toward it.)

AND CAN WE TALK ABOUT NATE'S FACE HERE?

This is the face of a man who knows he can't change what's about to happen. He knows what's coming. How many times did he try to stop it? "Enough to give up." "Over and over." How many different places on the island, how many ways trying to stop the sentinels or sound the alarm or alert the X-Men? How many times did he watch Maddie die, feel her die?

Like ....... the abandonment issues on this man. He grew up an orphan (even assuming he was raised by the Clan Askani, and there's nothing in the animated universe canon to contradict that). He very likely did not know the identities of his parents, since he and Bishop got separated (in X-Men 97 canon, even if that's not how it was caused in the comics, but same end effect of him not knowing who his parents were). Maybe he remembers the feel of Maddie's mind and her love, but that's all. No reasons. No answers. No identities.

And then let's assume comics canon applies, so his wife is dead. His clan is destroyed. His son is corrupted and actively trying to kill him. Anyone he's ever cared about has left him or turned against him or died.

So much pain. So much sacrifice. So much loneliness.

And then you find your mom. And she loves you so much. And then you immediately lose her again.

Yeah, I'd be really damn mad at the entire universe too. And especially at Scott and Jean.

I've gone back to work on that Summers Family Tree graph, and I just gotta say:

Stryfe (Nathan Summers) has exactly way too fucking many parents.

This man has three mothers and two fathers. Biologically, he is the child of Scott Summers and Madeline Pryor, who is a clone of Jean Grey and technically her son too because he is a clone of her adopted/step-son/bio-nephew, Cable (Nathan Summers).

But also his creation was ordered by Mother Askani, aka Rachel Summers, aka a variant of his own sister. So, he has three "moms": his biological mother, his aunt/adoptive mother, and his sister/creator.

But on top of that he was adopted by a variant of Apocalypse, aka En-Sabah Nur.

so umm on the x men there’s this couple of Cyclops and Jean grey, but plot twist this one’s a clone (the clone is referred to as Madelyn Prior)

so Cyclops and Madelyn have a baby but this baby named Nathanial Summer but gets kidnapped by Madelyn Priors creator Mr. Sinister and is put in this green stuff that’s a techno virus (which kinda ends up saving him if you know Nate Grey) but the techno virus is killing him and the only cure is in the future so bishop (who can only take the infant Nathan) takes him to the future where he can keep the techno virus under control with his powers where he can be trained by mother askani which turns out to be his sister. And during the events of the tv show (og x men show) Cable (Nathan) basically meets his parents but they’re not his parents yet bc they haven’t had Nate yet. And he’s also older than them (Which in the show (x men 97) is such a good scene when they find this out) anyways in the new show (x men 97) he meets them again and cyclops and Jean grey are like ‘holy shit that’s our son! Why didnt he tell is tho :(‘

ALSO IN THE FUTURE NATHAN GERS CONED AND THAT CLONE IS EVIL SO LIKE IT COULD BE DARK LINK??

So that’s their relation ship right

and my ass really went “Wow this Nate guy really sure is just like how Time and Wars are lol”

I have other roles for the chain including a Mask variant bc there’s another Cable/Nate but i think I ranted a bit to much lol

also you should watch x men 97/nf its really good and you don’t need to watch the old show to understand it :)

love this out of context picture representing the existence of Cable and Stryfe. For those that do not know, Sinister was the one behind Cable's birth via the clone of Jean, Madelyne in order to create a mutant powerful enough to eliminate Apocalypse because Sinister hated and feared him, (and how Apoc would ruin his grand goals or something). After the whole Inferno Saga, Madelyne's "death", Cable aka baby Nathan was raised by Jean and Scott until Apocalypse shows up, ultimately leading him to infect baby Cable with the techno-organic virus, possibly the same strain he had Sinister make back in the late 18 hundreds. From the future Clan Askani (which I shan't explain this is already so long), takes baby Cable to the future to save him. Jean and Scott will also eventually go to the future to raise their son. Anyways in the future Clan Askani fears baby Cable will die and clone him. Future Apocalypse and his minions kidnap the clone baby thinking it's the real Cable who is the Messiah, but it's the clone. And that's how we get STRYFE! Apocalypse's plan was to switch bodies and take over Cable but learns Stryfe is a clone so he's no good. Ensues daddy issues galore.

Exactly as cool as you'd hope/expect.

"Stryfe killed your wife and has stolen your son!!"

I'm new to 90s comics; Cable and Garrison Kane have become two of my favourite characters; they dominate here. I'm happy.

We open with Kane trapped a couple of thousand years in the future. (It's an Earth known to us as Askani World, and it's appeared a few times before.) His digging into Cable's past there alerts some bad guys, which leads to some fights where Kane kicks ass. Between battles, he's been hanging out with a band of freedom fighters called the Clan Chosen. (Hopefully, this new ongoing series takes place in the future - like KILLRAVEN - and we get to spend more time with these guys. They certainly make a solid first impression here.) Eventually, after only appearing in detailed flashbacks, Cable himself joins the party and they make a plan to blow something up. Count me in!
