Mean Girls (2024) Review
Cady Heron is the new girl who had been living in Kenya and home schooled by her mother. Entering high school with the hierarchy was never going to be easy, especially when she enters the Plastics clique and is about to come into battle with Regina George. ⭐️⭐️ This film version is based on the Broadway musical adaptation of the original film. Stuff I'm Looking Forward to in January
Say hello to 2024! In addition to New Year's Day (Jan. 1) and Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 15) here is what on my radar this month:
Movies:
Mean Girls
The 2004 comedy Mean Girls has taken on a life of its own and in the 20 years since it has become a part of the lexicon ("Fetch is not happening"). Now there is going to be a remake of the Broadway musical adaptation. What makes me interested is that original writer Tina Fey has written / produced this one too. Opens 1/12.
Music:
Sleater-Kinney Little Rope
The always reliable Sleater-Kinney are back with their 11th album. The band's 2019 album The Center Won’t Hold was a polarizing album that was so polarizing drummer Janet Weiss left before its release, but I actually really dug it and I even named “The Future is Here” my #1 Song of 2019. Their first post-Janet Weiss album was Path of Wellness, which I named my #6 Album of 2021. Their newest album drops 1/19! (review to come)
Green Day Saviors
The 14th album from Green Day is being released weeks away from the 30th anniversary of Dookie. It is their first album since 2020's Father of All... and the songs I've heard so far are pretty good. Album drops 1/19.
The Smile Wall of Eyes
The last album by the side project of Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood and Sons of Kemet's Tom Skinner was A Light for Attracting Attention, an album so good I named it my #1 Album of 2022! The title song off their new album was recently released with a music video from Paul Thomas Anderson that was outstanding. New album drops 1/26!
Awards Season:
Awards season for the Best of 2023 is now in full swing and this month we have the Golden Globes (Jan. 7) and Emmy Awards (Jan. 15).

Mean Girls (2024)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Mean Girls has two musical numbers where the second half of the songs are covered in intense strobe lights, with the movie being unsafe to watch until those songs are over. The first song is called Someone Gets Hurt, and uses that phrase multiple times before the strobe effects start. The second one is called World Burn, and frequently uses the phrase "watch the world burn" before its extreme strobe effects start. A few scenes have singular camera flashes, which are very bright. On two occasions, we see rapidly-changing images from vertically-shot cell phone video clips, which change fast enough to create strobe effects.
There are a few brief uses of handheld and shaking cameras. During multiple songs, there are several uses of orbiting shots at high speeds, which may be disorienting.
Flashing Lights: 10/10. Motion Sickness: 7/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: There is a lot of schoolyard bullying in this film.

Mean Girls (12A): Noisy Remake Strikes of Trying Too Hard to be Fetch.
#OneMannsMovies #filmreview of "Mean Girls" (2024). #MeanGirls. Uneven and frenetic remake that doesn't bear comparison with the classic original. 3/5.
A One Mann’s Movies Film Review of “Mean Girls” (2024). Mark Water’s “Mean Girls” is 20 years old and was a classic of its time. That starred Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams in the roles of Cady Heron and Regina George. It became a firm teen favourite that a generation (my daughters included) fondly look back on. Despite all its frantic efforts to please, I really can’t see this Mean Girls…

34. Mean Girls (Samantha Jayne & Arturo Perez Jr., 2024)
The dinner theatre version of this I watched at the Rockwell back in 2017 was genuinely better than this. Hell, I’d venture to say that a good 50% of high school theater departments that stage this pull it off better than this. Where’s the edge?? Aren’t these girls supposed to be mean? Aren’t I supposed to be laughing? Rating: 4.2/10

Just. Generally speaking. I think maybe people who don’t respect stage musicals should stop making movie musicals. Just a thought

Mean Girls ( 2024 Musical Movie.) Review./Watch Girls5eva Insteded
The original Mean Girls was something of a blind spot for this viewer until he watched it randomly during the pandemic when it had a run on UK Netflix. It’s one of those films that’s had enough pop and meme cultural penetration that this watcher just assumed he knew all of the memetic catchphrases and quoted moments via osmosis. A certain amount of that is true but the inherent surprise in…

“The safe joy of dancing with theatre boys.” Mean Girls the Musical (2024 film)
You know you’re a certain age when films you saw in the theatre in your adult life are being remade with some regularity. I think I first felt this pang when they remade Footloose and “reimagined” The Karate Kid, but actually I had seen neither of those films in the theatre during their original runs (and even now I don’t think I’ve watched either all the way through). Carrie and Robocop appear…
