being in a fandom but not being an artist is physically painful. There is so much you become unable to do- mock up headcanon designs, show off your OC, tell stories in engaging and easy to access ways, join drawing trends, not be able to do any individual ideas for drawings or animations you have yourself. It feels awful, like my wings are clipped, like I am a fish in a birdcage watching all the pretty birds flying around, calling out for others to join in- oh, and how I long to.
"Ooohh but you can just start drawing and posting your drawings whenever and whatever your skill level! No one will make fun of you-" WRONG. I have had multiple bad in-fandom experiences related to posting my practice art and people tearing me apart. I have seen beginner artists and, to my horror, disected their art in my head, judging it against everything I have seen in the past. It's awful, I wish I could stop, but sadly this kind of thing is hardwired into many non-artists (and some artists as well) minds. Sure, ten people may like my art and three people may praise me, but that's unknowable amounts more who saw it, ignored it, stared at and laughed.
And if you don't have prior experience drawing, or references, or any good materials/drawing mediums? If you are unable to keep up with drawing trends? Unable to perform or render or download any art or animation software? Well, you may as well be dirt. It's honestly feels like there's a whole cultural or class divide between artists and writers, as I once said I was branching out of writing and doing art, and got so much more praise than normal. All of this feels so fucked on so many levels. There is a reason I never post my art on my blog, besides it mostly being fuckass doodles, but even the pieces I am proud if never see the light of day.
I am just sick of how you automatically become "better" if you are a talented artist, and how everyone shits on beginners.
(This is based of my own experiences and I am tagging this with my own fandoms. Feel free to add on your own thoughts and expand fandom tags in reblogs.)

Writing fanfic for fandom is a special kind of isolation and loneliness because you have to just accept the fact your work will never be as appreciated as an artists work and if you try to bring it up as a debate you're the problem. I've literally never seen anyone discuss this separation before. I know that writers notice it, but I have no idea if the artists do, or if they even care enough to notice.

As a writer if someone draws something from my fanfiction it genuinely fills my heart with joy and I wondered if it works the other way around too?
Edit: to clarify I mean fanart specifically <3

i enjoy toxic yuri mafuena as much as the next person but sometimes i wish people would focus more on how ena takes care of mafuyu. like when ena held her hand in one of the guiding a list child card stories. or when she was telling mafuyu to move when the light turned green in that one area conversation. they complement each other in so many different ways that's so fucking good and idk how to put it into words and i want to explode

Creativity Is Not a Competition I grew up in a religious household, where I was taught to see my creative gifts as something sacred, something to honor, a practice for healing. From an early age, I recognized that my creativity came from a deep, intuitive place. When I took art classes, I often came up with unique approaches to projects, only to notice classmates copying my ideas. Some did it from a place of inspiration, but others who I knew didn’t even like me used it as a silent form of competition. It felt strange. As I’ve evolved, so has my understanding of inspiration. Being a creative in the digital era means it’s easy for people to take ideas without credit or acknowledgment. I grew up immersed in magazines, and I spent my teenage years on Tumblr, finding comfort in those who were unapologetically themselves. Their authenticity inspired me to become more of who I already was. Through all the trials and tribulations of being belittled for my eccentricity, I’ve learned to honor my authenticity. And despite everything, I remain brave about it. Still, it stings when people with more power rip off my ideas without a second thought. I don’t create for competition, I create because it is my nature. I just want the eARTh to heal, especially when it comes to the sacral chakra, the energetic center of creativity.. I want to live in a world where artists uplift each other rather than seeing one another as rivals. It reminds me of the tension between Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole, three incredible artists caught in the karmic lesson of what happens when creativity turns into a competition. But for me, the only competition is who I was yesterday. That’s why I choose solitude. It allows me to honor my dharma as an artist. I don’t want to compete. I just want to exist. My life is not a race it is my life.

Maybe I’m biased since this is one of my favorite Natsu panels!! He just looks so good and that smirk gosh how I love it!!
He looks so confident in the manga like he knows he’s the one to beat but in the anime he looks…well he just looks like he’s about to fight I guess?!

Ya girl desperately needs some money in order to get an environment my fiance and I can actually thrive in. As it is, my PTSD and his depression are triggered most daily.
I don't know what my prices are. But I will draw or write most things. Message me on @rabidfiance1313 for particulars/to run an idea past me, or to discuss my GoFundMe campaign.

okay i meant to make this post forever ago but my personal opinion on why so many people were so dissatisfied with lightfalll (disclaimer: i am not one of these people, i love lightfall SO much), is that lightfall was kind of subjected to a really aggressive marketing campaign.
like, stick with me here, i feel like almost all the lightfall release content (the trailers especially) were so focused on battling the witness, how this battle has been centuries in the making and this is the Second Collapse Finally Finding Us, only for there to be,,, no real resolution. the end was left on such a severe cliffhanger, but not only that, there was NO battle with the witness. the witness didn't even seem to be having a hard time at all with what we WERE throwing at it.
and for narrative reasons *i* am obsessed with this ending; in terms of storytelling i adore practically every creative decision that was made in lightfall, but i think the reason that so many people were so upset about it is because lightfall had such intense marketing and was rooted in the implication that this was the End of Days, only for us to get almost no closure, and instead so many more questions.
(there's also something to be said, i think, about the fact that the people who ARE most upset about this are like, the youtube gamer dudebros who's content is very very often rooted in the aggressive, violence-and-warfare, pvp-centric, no-interest-in-lore approach to destiny, and that the people i've seen primarily ENJOYING the narrative decisions (or at least being understanding about it) are the artists and writers and loremasters of the fandom, but i'm not quite sure,,, how to expand on that point.)
#like. something something yt dudebros who are like 'uhhh destiny is about violence and war and the lore is only for people who suck at pvp#and destiny is a shitty evil game i hate it sooooo much hashtag 26871435 hours recorded gameplay' asshats#being the ones complaining MOST about the narrative in. a narrative driven game. and refusing to engage with ANY lore in a LORE HEAVY GAME#vs. the community on here thats full of artists and writers and people who actually like to analyze the story and characters#and engage with the lore and have any emotional attachment at all to the characters and world and themes#being the ones who are like. appreciative of the narrative decisions made and looking forward to where the story will take us and#looking at the game with LOVE instead of hatred and malice#and even if you didn't like lightfall!!! people in the latter category are still the people who i keep seeing be like#'yeah even if i didn't personally like it i can understand the significance of this narrative decision.'#'i acknowledge that bungie put so much time and effort and passion into making this even if it wasnt satisfying to me personally.'#'i have the critical thinking skills to understand that bungie is not a sentient malicious entity trying to ruin my life; me; specifically'#like. do you get what im saying. gamer dudebros who think the world revolves around them vs the fandom members who actually understand art#bc. thats what destiny is. its art. the whole thing is a massive art project made by a group of people that are very passionate about it.#do you hear what im saying at ALL its like two separate fandoms for the same piece of media the difference is so stark#mine#destiny 2#lightfall#destiny 2 lightfall#eos destiny essays

it sucks writers can’t profit the same way artists can, especially in fandom spaces.
big fat disclaimer: I understand that due to copyright laws fanfic writers walk a very thin line, and in order to continue walking it, we can’t make money off of what we create. to be clear: i would rather have 0 money and people have the ability to create and read fanfic, i am just Griping.
anyways
commissioning someone to draw your favorite character? fine.
making and selling your own merchandise? so long as you’re not at an Industry Event with lawyers walking around, you’re golden.
fanartists are able to freely profit off both their skills and their love of certain media, and i am sometimes a little envious of that.
ultimately i love writing and i love writing fanfic and i do it solely for myself, which is why i keep doing it, but sometimes i wish i too could make some pocket change by writing something that brings me and other people joy
