Top 5 Works 2020 - Fanfic Edition

rules: it’s time to love yourselves! choose your 5 (ish) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!

tagged by: I got tagged three different times for this challenge, so I’m doing a fanfic version, a moodboard version, and a crafts version. For this one, we’ll say that the spectacular @deathsweetqueen tagged me!

For the fanfics, in no particular order...

1. Save Another Life (It Will Be Worth It) - This was actually a remix of "How to Save a Life (It Just Might Be Yours" in which the Winter Soldier found baby Tony Stark in the car when he was sent to kill Howard Stark. And then took him, and raised him, with all the Dad!Bucky and Kid!Tony shenanigans.

In that version, Tony met Bruce when they were kindergarteners, but then had to move away. I had several readers say they wanted Bucky to kidnap Bruce and take him with them. So this fic happened. And it’s a feels-fest, y’all. A lot of angst smattered with moments of tooth-rotting fluff, and a very, very happy ending. Have a summary:

James and his (somewhat stolen) son Tony have been living happy lives under the radar for the past five years. They move a lot, and leave a lot of friends behind, but then Tony meets a little boy named Bruce. In another world, James and Tony might move on, though it breaks their hearts to have to say goodbye to the scared, hurting little boy that is Tony's best friend.

In this world, however... they don't say goodbye.

2. Pepper Has A Thing For Idiots - One of my readers pointed out that silly Pepperony fics are few and far between. And that’s exactly what this fic is! Tony being an idiot (as a genius, he deserves a lot more idiot moments than the average person) and Pepper being moronsexual for him.

Pepper has always known she's attracted to idiots, but it wasn't until she met this one in particular that she realized just how moronsexual she is.

3. The Name You Gave Me - This fic is a collab with the amazing @fightingforcreativity! It’s another kid fic heavy on the feels, and we had so much fun brainstorming it! And then we had to slog through the process of filling in all the gaps, but working with J as absolutely great! The Winter Soldier and a tiny Natasha Romanoff escape the Red Room and are taken back to the States by Howard Stark, where they meet and bond with a tiny Tony.

If you asked the Asset, he'd say it started with being given a name, something of his own. For the first time he had something for himself, and he became greedy. So she became his as well.

If you asked the little Widow, she'd say, “It started with a brother. He was my brother and I wanted another.”

If you asked Howard Stark, he'd say, “It started with the Serum, and it ended with a Serum.”

But if you asked the youngest of them all, he'd answer, “It started like everything, an action was the catalyst for a chain reaction. I was just lucky to have a brother and a sister, a real father and another mother, through it all.”

The moral of the story is that a true family always finds each other.

4. The Most Spoiled Fish In Existence - More silliness for you, definitely inspired by my own fish and encouraged by the TSB discord peeps! It’s just cracky nonsense, some of which was inspired by real life fish shenanigans.

Tony finds a fish in his lab. Why would someone give him a fish? This remains a mystery, until he realizes that a particular Honeybear of his has simultaneously gone missing...

5. Through A Child's Eyes, It's Different - This is, to date, the LONGEST fic I’ve ever written! And while plot is still thin on the ground (I’m not awesome at plot, I’m a one-shot girl), I am still in love with all the many adorable kid!Tony moments. (Yes, another kid fic. This was the year of kid!Tony fics.) Tony got deaged, but kept all his memories, and everyone gets an unfiltered look at how he feels about them.

The Accords debacle is long over, and the ex-Avengers have come home. Things are not going well, particularly when Tony gets kidnapped by the villain-of-the-week and ends up in the middle of a freak lab accident.

Seeing things through the eyes of a child sounds kind of poetic, and in some cases, it is. But for the rogue Avengers, it's a shocking and harsh look at their past deeds, as well as a closer look at who Tony Stark really is when he doesn't have all his self-made masks up to protect him.

With Pepper, Rhodey, and Happy there to keep him safe and love him, Tony navigates the weirdness his life has become, while Dr. Strange, Thor, and Dr. Foster work to figure out what happened to Tony and if the deaging can be reversed.

There are not even words for HOW HARD IT WAS TO CHOOSE between all the fics I posted this year. It was like picking a favorite child.

And last of all: I don't wanna hear anything about this being unfair. If fanart artists can charge $50+ for a character drawing, I can do the same for writing you multiple pages of character growth and story. Same goes for the Templates, this is my free time and if you think artists of all kinds should be able to make a living you should be supporting them. ALSO: Requests for free stuff can take multiple weeks if not months sometimes, especially if I don’t usually write a character.

For the broke peepz: PLEASE don't worry if you can't afford something on this list. I will do giveaways from time to time where you'll be able to get a 'three shot' or a custom 'PSD Template'. [ RUNE ] — derived from the Old Norse word rún, meaning “secret”.

[ TROY ] — derived from a gaelic name meaning “foot soldier”. Named for Troy Banner, at the insistence of Rylie.

[ CALDERSON ] — meaning “son of Calder”

BIRTHDATE:

♊ GEMINI, JUNE 6TH ;; gemini’s are defined by their inconsistency - their personality is ever changing, and it’s difficult to know which side of them you may be greeted with on any given day. Typically very witty and well expressed people, capable of slotting into a variety of settings with ease and enthusiasm, they can, on the flip side, be quite indecisive and superficial.

APPEARANCE:

[ HAIR ] — similar to Calder’s in its light brown color, Rune’s hair is far messier than his father’s, let grow far longer and then minimally styled.

PERSONALITY:

+ BENEVOLENT ;; at his heart, Rune is a really good kid, without a bad bone in his body. He’s a gentle soul with a lot of love to give to friends and family, and everything he does is for them– his goodness makes him want to make the world a safer place for the people he care about to live in, hence why he was drawn to SHIELD in the first place. He finds it very difficult, though, to express himself, and often shows how much he cares through ways other than words.

- STOIC ;; much like his parents before him, Rune is incredibly good at being a rock, even in the face of hardship and cruelty. He feels things very deeply, but he’s very good at keeping those emotions far beneath the surface, and even better at keeping going regardless of how soul crushing those feelings may be. He keeps them to himself because as the eldest, he feels its his job to stay in control and keep a level head… and if he let himself indulge in some of the things he feels, every once in a while, then he really wouldn’t be able to do that.

+ HONORABLE ;; he was raised to be a good man, and he is. Rune values truth above all else, and he believes in doing the right thing, regardless of what it may cost him. His morals are sound, and when it comes to making a tough call, he does what’s right over what’s easy– it’s something that’s been instilled in him since childhood, and it’s made him into the man he is.

- DOGMATIC ;; often, however, it’s Rune’s way or the highway. As the oldest, he took it upon himself to be the leader– and this has carried with him throughout life. SPECIAL TALENTS:

THUNDER MANIPULATION ;; the twins powers seem like good descriptors for how they are as people. Ingrid is the lightning– she’s more into making a display, she seems more destructive– and he’s the quiet rumble in the distance, with the capability to do just as much damage. Rune and Ingrid were partnered up in the end, not because they were twins, but because their powers go hand in hand and it never seemed right to have one without the other.

WHO THEY LIKE BETTER:

CALDER. Of his parents, he’s the one less inclined to sit there questioning him. Rylie wants to know things– she wants to understand how he’s feeling and what he’s thinking, so she can help, but Rune doesn’t like to share those things, and all her probing does is makes him kind of resent her. But Calder is more like him, and never minds just sitting in silence– it’s something Rune appreciates.

WHO THEY TAKE AFTER MOST:

BOTH. Calder and Rylie are both quite similar, and Rune is a clear mix of the two.

PERSONALITY:

+ DAUNTLESS ;; there’s really not much out there that can really put any sort of fear into her. Maybe it’s cause she’s the kid of two heroes, who’re also the kids of heroes. Maybe, it’s just cause that’s how she’s wired. But, ‘being scared’ isn’t really something that Ingrid’s familiar with.

- REACTIVE ;; there’s no thinking things through, for ingrid. She feels and reacts to things in the moment, but, though it’s always a flaw that has had disastrous consequences for her, she’s always been one to shrug and laugh it off afterwards. ‘Hindsight is a great thing,’ is pretty much her catchphrase, though understandably, neither of her parents find it all too amusing. For someone who also holds her loved ones above all else… being ready to throw herself in front of them come any sign of danger isn’t a great thing.

+ CONFIDENT ;; there’s no one more sure of herself and her abilities than ingrid, except, perhaps, her younger sister– but even then she’d tell you, she came first. She knows she’s pretty. She knows she’s smart. She knows that she can kill a man at least 10 different ways with a singular paperclip. She knows all these things, and, she kind of delights in them, to the point of even walking and talking with the air of someone who knows exactly what she’s doing, even when she doesn’t.

- STUBBORN ;; so too, is rune, but with ingrid, it’s something else completely. Nothing changes her mind. Nothing even makes a dent in her decision– if she’s decided to do something and made up her mind, it’s done, and there’s no point in hoping to get around her. She was like this even as a child, and, it got worse as she grew. She was the kind of kid who stubbornly announced that she was going to be partaking in the science fair, and making the most ambitious of projects. Rylie and Calder both tried to get her to choose something that required a little less work, so that she could just rest for a little while, but… she flat out refused, and spent two whole weeks working flat out to make sure that it was ready. She was doing it, and more than that, she was going to succeed– and she did, placing 2nd in the fair overall. Times like those, it paid off to be stubborn. Other times, though, it really didn’t.

SPECIAL TALENTS:

ELECTRICITY MANIPULATION ;; it’s a dangerous power for someone like Ingrid to have. She’s not good with keeping things lowkey– when she’s angry, it builds, and builds, until it’s let out in one destructive explosion, and often times this happens quite quickly, because she’s a very reactive person. Electricity manipulation was asking for trouble, but, she knows how she is and from the minute she discovered it, she’s been working on reigning it in and keeping control.

WHO THEY LIKE BETTER:

RYLIE. It’s a classic case of one being their father’s son, and the other being a proper little mummy’s girl. They mightn’t be the most similar on the surface, but, Ingrid always gravitated towards her Mum the most– to the point that even as a baby, only Rylie was able to calm her down when she was crying.

WHO THEY TAKE AFTER MOST:

BOTH. And neither. Ingrid is a strange sort of inbetween– she’s like both of them, in a way, but she’s also really unique, and lacks the kind of negative traits that make up who Rylie and Calder are. It’s like Rune got a mix of those and she got a mix of their positives, tenfold, making her into the girl she is.

+ INTELLIGENT ;; she’s always been smart, even when she really didn’t have anything else, or at least… nothing else that made her stand out in a family of agents and potential agents. She didn’t like the same things that Rune and Ingrid did. She didn’t want to be out in the field, throwing herself into danger every other day– but she always had a desire to work behind the scenes, building things that could help other people save the day. SHIELD academy of science and technology was her dream, and, Rylie and Calder always actively encouraged her to reach for it, and couldn’t have been happier when she was accepted in.

- OVER TOLERANT ;; she’s always been the kind to give a few too many chances to people who don’t deserve them. One just isn’t enough– if what they’ve done isn’t that big a deal, in her mind, or they’ve apologized to her, she feels as if they deserve the chance to better themselves, and, is always willing to give it.

+ HOPEFUL ;; she’s always hoping for something. Hoping to make it into the academy of science and technology, hoping to make it as a top student, hoping to be on the same team as her siblings, hoping to make her parents proud, hoping to hold her family together, when they might just fall apart. She always believes in something more, and, trusts that better is coming, even if it isn’t.

- GUILTY ;; unlike her parents, her guilt doesn’t eat her up… but, it’s there. She’s always going to live with the knowledge that the tech malfunctioning was something she should have foreseen, and done something about before it happened. She’s always going to have to live with the fact her sister died, and there’s a slim chance she could have stopped that, and it’s always going to be something that plays on her mind– but she refuses to let it be the one thing that rules her life. She’s seen what comes from allowing guilt consume you, and, she actively works to try get through hers, every single day.

ENHANCED INTELLIGENCE ;; not even Freyja realizes that her intelligence is in part thanks to her power. She’s just smart. She always has been– she was the kid with the straight A grades and the shining report back at the end of the year. She was the one who got 1st place at science fairs as opposed to 2nd. She’d read for hours every day and just absorb all the information and even as a child, she was full of useless facts that she’d happily throw out over the dinner table. That was before her powers developed, and, while they might’ve given her a bit of an edge in the academy and made her that little bit brighter, her parents already knew she was a smart one. So much so, they couldn’t say they noticed any difference.

WHO THEY LIKE BETTER:

RYLIE. She loves her dad just as much, but, she finds Rylie to be a lot easier to talk to. She’s not as caught up in her own head as Calder, which, Freyja enjoys.

It took Rylie and Calder a very long time to get together, in spite of the feelings which begun to develop between the two as they grew close to one another again. They could never quite bring themselves to move forwards into any sort of relationship past friendship, because it never felt right– it was betraying Phoebe, in both their minds, and both preferred staying in denial over doing that. However, over time, it got more and more difficult to not fel the way they had started to, and more than that, it grew more difficult to hide the their feelings from everyone that knew them. After a few heart to hearts and some separate reminders by friends who couldn’t stay out of it anymore that Phoebe would want them to be happy, though, they finally began dating– and that was that, with neither of them ever looking back. They fit together better than they could have imagined, a match maybe not made in heaven, but, definitely not made in hell.

Being parents was another thing that took them a while to wrap their heads around– nearly the whole nine months that Rylie was pregnant, in fact. The twins were far from planned, but, cliche as it sounded… the two settled into parenthood better than they could have imagined after their birth. They’d been told by their own parents time and time again that you could never really know what it was like to be a Mum, or a Dad, until you were one, and with Rune and Ingrid they discovered that was true. It was never easy, but, the one thing they had going for them and could build from was that they loved their kids more than anything in the world, and wanted to give them the best of lives– so that was what they aimed for every single day. Three years later when Freyja was born, they had the whole ‘parenting’ thing… well, not exactly down, but, close enough.

As the twins grew, it became obvious that features weren’t the only thing they shared– they also looked up to their parents and the Avengers, and much like their Mum and Dad, wanted to eventually follow in their footsteps and join SHIELD. Of course, Rylie and Calder had made sure that each of their children received basic defense training but when Rune and Ingrid wanted to do even more, they had to make the decision… did they want their kids living the same kind of life they’d had? Regardless the answer to that, they also had to ask themselves if they could really stop them if they didn’t want them to and looking at the two of them– both as stubborn as their parents before them– they really weren’t so sure. Finally, they relented, and the twins proved to be two of the brightest new recruits SHIELD took on.

Rune was a leader, and that position was where he excelled. He was good at making decisions (even hard ones) in little to no time, and his parents were both so proud when he was made leader of the small team that he and Ingrid had been placed on. Ingrid, then, was far more like her mother– she was a field agent through and through, capable of making decisions if they were called for, but far better at following orders she was given. Together and apart, the two were formidable. And then, you had Freyja– the youngest, who followed suit much later and had huge shoes to fill from the gt go. She never really found her calling as a field agent, but she was one of the brightest students at the SHIELD academy of science and technology, and did far better work developing things in the lab than she could ever hope to on a mission. It would have been an absolute travesty not to have all the Calderson-Barton children on a team together, of course, and so, when Freyja completed her studies, she was placed on Rune and Ingrid’s team as a tech specialist.

Rylie and Calder couldn’t have been more proud of their kids, and couldn’t have been happier at how their lives had just seemed to work out. Each of them was doing amazingly in their own chosen line of work, and… they’d never really experienced such consistent happiness before. It really seemed too good to be true.

And it was.

The twins were twenty four when they went on their last mission together. It was totally run of the mill, and, the fight that began after their cover was blown should have been easily put to bed. If not, then, they should’ve been able to reach their Quinjet easily, and make a hasty retreat. But they were cut off from their route and technology developed by Freyja and the other team specialist, specially for Rune, malfunctioned in the middle of the ensuing fire fight. He was left defenseless, and, when all seemed to lost– Ingrid took the hit meant for her brother.

The rest of the team pulled through and the dust settled, but, it was too late. Ingrid was dead, and, things changed.

Rylie and Calder were never as close as they’d been before her death, and, Rune shut himself off– he threw himself into SHIELD, but he never got the same enjoyment out of it as he once had with his twin at his side. Something (more accurately, someone) was missing, and he never found a partner to replace the twin he’d lost. Freyja tried to be the glue that bound for a long time, but, she realized pretty quickly that she couldn’t fix everything and she couldn’t erase the guilt she had for being partly to blame, and soon she too began to spend more and more time away than she did at home. It took years for them all to be able to be around each other, without thoughts of Ingrid, and even longer for them to go back to being something of a family– but while things might have healed, gradually, they never could go back to 'normal’. It just didn’t exist anymore.
