I’ve had two personal essay ideas bouncing around in my head for a week now and that’s usually a sign that I have to write them. It’s a nice feeling tbh. To me it means I’m truly in the execution phase of one writing project because my brain has space to work on other things. There are so many things I love and learned during the two years I spent on Artisan but I think the biggest is the knowledge that I can, in fact, finish a large scale writing project if the idea has legs. All it makes me want to do is write more.

Its interesting how badly i do in like school enviroments just on the basis of having horrible memory and an inability to do things i think are pointless. I think i come off as quite average in conversation but those things truly make me feel like an idiot and are also the reason for why im unemployable

[Here to check out a joint where two high school buddies took a wild catering project and turned it, literally, into an artisan pig emporium. So we got Miami Smokers.]

I made myself sad while working on the CHMC project, so now you all have to hear about it. So I'm reconstructing a trail ruins, and I'm calling it the Artisan Settlement, right? And I'm taking a break from the art part of it, and looking at what I got from the suspicious gravel, analyzing it and attempting to draw some conclusions.
So I'm looking at the the sherds and the trims right now, and I feel like I got a lot of wayfinder trims (5 of 12). I also got a good number of heartbreak sherds (4 out of 15, this is relevant later). Now, one of the definitions of wayfinder from Oxford Languages is: "a person navigating to a particular location."
So, given that there were a large number of wayfinder trims found, we can assume that a good number the people of the Artisan Settlement were explorers or went to other settlements to trade (trade was most definitely a thing in these settlements, but that's another post). And you might expect that sometimes these people would go out to the other settlements, and just not come back.
Here's where the heartbreak sherds come in. I theorize that the heartbreak sherds are their way of symbolizing grief in art. Now this could absolutely be romantic heartbreak as I imagine many might jump to. But it could also be platonic or familial or any other types of heartbreak that could happen.
Now what about all this made me sad? Just the thought of a parent, sibling, or child leaving the settlement to go trade with someone nearby, and they just don't return, either they were killed by a mob, or got lost, or some other thing. And someone sat down and made a pot to show their grief over losing this person.

everyone should attempt an artisan craft at some point in their life because it would cut down the number of comments questioning why handmade goods like ceramics or textile craft or woodworking are so expensive
and this is an unrealistic expectation, but I think the attempt should include seeing through to the end at least one "finished" item, no matter how clumsy or lumpy your first attempts might be. like to me, there's a huge difference in perspective between attempting to learn how to crochet or throw a pot for a few days, acknowledging that it's harder than it looks and giving up, versus committing to finishing that scarf or clay pot you started and working on it for weeks while you painstakingly learn from your mistakes and grow attached to your project while also simultaneously hating it.
once you finish the latter, your perspective changes from "why does this crocheted blanket cost $200" to "holy shit I can't believe they're charging $200 for this crocheted blanket instead of $2000" because you may have known crocheting is hard, you may have easily agreed with the idea that "handmade goods take time and effort" even before attempting a craft, but now you know firsthand the absolute time sink it takes to make things. like yeah dude, that one item took you 2 months to make and probably wasn't even an ultra complex item if it was the first thing you made, now imagine attaching an hourly wage to that time to calculate the cost (and this is ignoring every nuance of the artistic element and master crafters being able to work faster/charge higher because of their years and years of experience)
anyway this rant has been motivated by a comment I saw on someone else's ceramic post asking why a mug was $60 and they understand it's handmade but $60 just seems overpriced, and bro do you know how long ceramics take to make. that mug probably took at minimum 3 weeks between how long it takes to throw the mug, dry partially, trim the mug, dry fully, bisque fire, wait a day for the kiln to cool, sand and paint and glaze, glaze fire, wait a day for the kiln to cool, take product photography of the mug, write description and list the mug online for sale, im not even including the skill needed to complete all these steps without the mug literally exploding or collapsing while also making it an appealing piece of art, aaaaaaaaaaaaa

Everybody say ooooooo!
I’ve been patiently waiting for a nice second-hand wood dresser to appear on fb marketplace or at Goodwill for months. Finally, I grabbed this one yesterday for $50.
Tumblr media
My inspiration for this project are some dressers I saw at Anthropology that have gorgeous carved details. But I want my dresser to cost $200 or less rather than $2,000.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course I can’t add actual hand-carved wood, but I’ve got clay and some silicon molds + epoxy and a potential overconfidence in my DIY abilities.
First up, I removed the existing hardware and sanded this pretty lady down. She is now looking MUCH better without all those terrible stains (and the drawer pulls weren’t doing it for her, tbh).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Up next, I’ll give her a paint wash or three and start trying my hand at faking some carvings!
