The arrest of Jesus is described in multiple Bible passages, including: Matthew 26:47-56: An armed crowd sent by the chief priests and elders arrests Jesus. Judas, one of Jesus's disciples, betrays him by kissing him.

John 18:1-12: Jewish police and Roman soldiers arrest Jesus in a garden. Jesus overpowers the forces with the name of God.

Luke 22:39-53: Jesus is arrested in Gethsemane. The arrest of Jesus is described in all four Gospels, but only Matthew and Mark name the location as Gethsemane

some of the things I've learned in the Adventurer's Bible are so chilling... really drives home the fact that this is a completely different world with medieval-like stuff going on. I'm especially chilled by what Laios and Falin said about the "mountain people"...

Description

In the darkness of the Mount of Olives, Jesus receives the kiss that consummates Judas´ betrayal while Peter cuts off the ear of Malco, the High Priest´s servant, with his sword, as described in the Bible story. This work from Van Dyck´s youth is directly based on Venetian models. The low viewpoint and the use of a single source of light contribute to its great dramatic intensity, which is very appropriate for the event. This is one of the painter´s most successful compositions and various versions are known, with variations only in secondary aspects. The Prado Museum´s painting belonged to Rubens. When he died, it was acquired by Felipe IV, who sent it to Madrid´s Alcázar Palace.

Sometimes God really does put people in our lives for a brief moment, if only to see the reflection of His searing face in them, and to understand blindingly and briefly the Beauty working silently in hidden ways all around us

#thinking specifically of someone i got to talk to yesterday whom i was not expecting to chat with #it cut me to the quick that conversation. I think philosophy students have a special gift in that their brains ARE wired a certain way #very much for musing and articulating and pondering and (of course) arguing #but the majority of phil kids i've met are in phil because they sense there is some kind of transcendent Beauty in the world #and they're trying with all their might to figure out what it is where it's from etc. etc. they're drawn to it!#and maybe their intellect gets in the way sometimes as cs lewis might put it #because they ARE reasoning using human reasoning and human methods of understanding to try to understand God.#and epistemology aside that DOES create a beautiful paradox #where the student is trying to understand that which is not understandable and is at once bewildered and delighted #by the mystery of it all knowing that he can never fully comprehend it. anyway God is working in marvellous ways in that boy's life #pray for him if you think of him! he is arrested and compelled by Beauty and Love and says he cannot conceive #of being in personal relationship and communion with the Theos he believes is the maker and sustainer of the universe #but i suspect his heart is moved towards Christ more than he understands
