🌍 Mapping 13 Countries Inside Ukraine 🇺🇦: A Fascinating Thought Experiment! 🌍
Ever wondered how big Ukraine really is? Let's play a game of geopolitical Tetris! 🎮 📍 Countries Inside Ukraine's Borders 📍
🇦🇱 Albania finds its place in the Northwest, specifically in Volhynia.
Historical Note: Like Ukraine, Albania also struggled for its independence and faced various invasions.
2. 🇨🇿 Czechia snugly fits in the West, in the regions of Galicia-Podolia.
Did You Know?: Both the Czech Republic and Ukraine are Slavic countries with historical ties that span over a thousand years. They have shared moments of solidarity, especially during the Velvet Revolution and Ukraine's own struggle for democracy. The Czech civil society has often been supportive of Ukraine's European aspirations, and both nations have a rich folklore tradition.
3. 🇸🇮 Slovenia nestles in the Southwest, in Transcarpathia.
Cultural Insight: Slovenia and Ukraine share a love for mountainous landscapes.
4. 🇦🇹 Austria takes its spot in the North, covering areas like Polesia, Kyiv, and Siveria. Historical Insight: the Austrian Empire once controlled the region of Galicia, which is now part of modern-day Ukraine. The Austrian rule has left a lasting impact on the culture and architecture of the region.
5. 🇸🇰 Slovakia finds its home right in the Center of Ukraine.
Historical Ties: Slovakia and Ukraine share a border and have a complex history of interaction.
6. 🇷🇸 Serbia is located in the Black Sea Coast and Zaporizhzhia region.
Conflict Legacy and External Influence: Both countries have recent histories of conflict and are still dealing with its aftermath. Russia often leverages shared historical narratives to influence Serbian politics, further complicating Serbia's geopolitical stance.
7. 🇲🇪 Montenegro fits into Southern Bessarabia/Budjak.
Tourism Angle: Montenegro is a tourism gem, something Ukraine is aspiring to become.
8-9. 🇨🇾 Cyprus and 🇹🇷 Northern Cyprus share the southern part of Kherson region.
Political Intrigue: The division of Cyprus into two entities echoes Ukraine's own territorial issues.
10. 🇭🇺 Hungary is situated in the East, covering Poltava region and Sloboda Ukraine.
Historical and Current Ties: Hungary ruled over Transcarpathia for centuries, a region primarily inhabited by Ukrainians. During its rule, Hungary implemented policies aimed at assimilating the local population. Even today, Hungarian politicians occasionally make territorial claims against Ukraine and other neighboring countries.
11-12. 🇮🇱 Israel and 🇵🇸 Palestine are located in the Azov Sea region.
Historical Trauma: Prior to World War II, Ukraine had one of the largest Jewish populations in the world. In many cities, Jews made up between 20% to 50% of the population. Tragically, most were exterminated by German Nazis during the Holocaust, with estimates suggesting that around 1.5 million Ukrainian Jews were killed.
13. 🇦🇲 Armenia finds its place in Crimea.
Historical Trauma: Both Ukraine and Armenia have faced historical tragedies, including genocides and wars.
📊 By the Numbers 📊
Total Area: 511,000 km² (That's 92,000 km² less than Ukraine! Enough room left for Switzerland and Denmark 🇨🇭🇩🇰)
Population: 66.1 million (That's 42% more than Ukraine! 🤯)
Wealth: Only Austria 🇦🇹 and Israel 🇮🇱 are considered wealthy. The rest range from average to poor.
GDP: A staggering $1.9 trillion (nominal) and $2.8 trillion (PPP), which is 9 times Ukraine's GDP pre-Russian invasion. 💰
🤔 What Does This All Mean? 🤔
All these countries have faced historical challenges similar to Ukraine, especially the scars left by the World Wars. Yet, their paths have diverged significantly, leading to different economic and social outcomes.
💬 Your Thoughts? 💬
What do you think led to such drastic differences? Share your thoughts, theories, or even personal stories related to these countries.

Extraordinary Armenia: An Underrated Country with Plenty to Offer
Here is my Armenia trip report from when I visited in October 2022
I visited Armenia in the fall of 2022 with few expectations. At first glance, tourism in Armenia seemed limited to the Armenian diaspora or Russians who were coming in by the droves to escape the Ukraine war draft. I hadn’t expected it to be such a delightfully easy country to travel around, and I didn’t plan to fall in love with it. Although I had initially planned on visiting in 2008, what…

Vernissage Market – For an authentic Armenian shopping experience, Vernissage Market offers handicrafts, antiques, and souvenirs. It’s a lively spot where you can interact with local artisans.
Erebuni Fortress – Dating back to 782 BC, this ancient fortress takes you to Yerevan’s origins, with archeological exhibits displaying artifacts from the Urartian civilization.

[IDs: a tweet by @ Kandakat_alhaqq which says "Columbia SJP has asked @ macklemore to cancel his concert in Dubai in solidarity with the Sudanese people". Attached to the tweet are the images below:
An image of protesters dressed in black, holding up a "Hind's Hall" sign, at the top of text which says: "The leaders of Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine, alongside all occupiers of Hind's Hall, are calling on Macklemore to cancel his performance of his new single 'Hind's Hall' in the UAE due to the country's direct engagement in the ongoing genocide in Sudan.
We affirm our gratitude for the solidarity Macklemore has shown thus far by naming a song after the Columbia University building that we reclaimed in honor of Hind Rajab.
We have faith that you will extend this solidarity to struggles that are directly linked to Palestinian liberation, namely the Darfur Genocide currently perpetrated by the UAE-backed RSF (Rapid Support Forces) who are responsible for the ethnic cleansing Sudanese civilians, particularly Black non-Arab ethnic groups.
Due to the UAE's active investments in agricultural land acquisitions and the extensive gold resources in Sudan, the RSF is able to fund their genocidal campaign by smuggling gold from Sudan to the UAE in return for arms.
The people of Sudan have asked for a boycott of tourism to the UAE, and we hope that you will heed their demand.
Important Facts:
The UAE has been acquiring land in Sudan since the early 2000s. To date, they have acquired 762,000 hectares of land, with negotiations ongoing for an additional 3.4 million hectares.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), originally the Janjaweed militias, have been responsible for the Darfur Genocide, which resulted in the deaths of over 300,000 people. They continue to commit severe human rights abuses, including mass rapes (involving children, village burnings, and targeted killings of non-Arab ethnic groups.
Current Figures:
Over 25 million people are in dire need of humanitarian aid.
14 million people are in extreme crisis and facing starvation.
14.7 million children are caught in these brutal conditions.
More than 10 million people are internally displaced, with only 1.8 million having managed to flee to neighboring countries.
6.9 million women and girls are facing gender-based violence.
An estimated 2.5 to 5 million people are expected to die from starvation by September 2024.
The conflict has resulted in over 150,000 fatalities so far.
From the Zionist entity to the UAE, we reject every wing of the genocide-profiteering war machine.
As the UAE actively funds the Darfur genocide, they remain one of the most important regional allies of the Zionist entity.
Since UAE's recognition of "Israel" with the U.S. brokered Abraham Accords in 2020, the AE has committed itself to undermining Palestinian self-determination.
Despite over 40,000 Palestinians martyred by the Zionist entity since October 7th, the UAE has remained resolute in its commitment to enabling genocide - from Palestine to Sudan.
There are countless child martyrs in Sudan, just like Hind Rajab, who have been murdered by the UAE-backed RSF militias.
when we say "globalize the intifada," we call to resist colonial and imperialist oppression in all its forms, transcending borders in our unified struggle for our collective liberation,
we recognize that the same colonial instruments fueling the genocide in Palestine are also complicit in the genocide in Sudan & that the fates of the peoples of Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Armenia, Kashmir, Puerto Rico, Kurdistan, Guam, Haiti, Hawai'i, Cuba, Turtle Island, and all colonized bodies are interconnected,
& we stand in solidarity with all forms of resistance of oppressed peoples across the globe against their subjugation and annihilation at the hands of the imperialist world order, knowing that none of us are free until all of us are free. /End ID]

Self indulgent post but I decided to look at my country count because I knew I broke 40 in 2024. The current stats are: 42 total countries visited, 18 with work, 4 to visit a friend, 3 long stays (2 months or more), 17 purely for tourism (with a few countries falling into a couple categories). Living in Europe currently with plans to move back to the US this summer, but I’m hoping to go to Armenia, Luxembourg, maybe Denmark, and a long tour of Norway before going home. We’ll see what $$$$ allows but yeah. It’s cool.
