One of my favorite Substacks is The Retrologist by Ronaldo Pujol because he loves to travel the country and take in the weirdness that either used to exist or still continues to exist despite late-stage capitalism. While I’m fully aware that Arby’s is part of late-stage capitalism as a whole, I couldn’t help but be excited when I passed by this particular location in the northern suburbs of Wilmington, DE because it had not one, but two of the famed 10-gallon hat signs. Pujol has a whole library of posts dedicated to the ones that he’s found across the country, and I’m glad I finally got to see one of these for myself. 

Did I park and take some photos even though it was a grey day and I couldn’t appreciate the neon at full display? You fucking bet I did.

As a big fan of Pokémon, for years I've a had a huge issue with it.

This guy.

As a child I always thought the round pink oval was his mouth. It looked like a mouth - it was the right color and everything; it HAD to be a mouth.

But I also thought the Arby's sign was a tongue until I was like ... sixteen (leading to an embarrassing convo with my brother when I remarked that it looked like a cowboy hat one day).

Anyway. My big issue with maboi diglett wasn't that I was wrong. It was that I couldn't picture it right. I tried for ages to picture him correctly, to absolutely no avail.

Then I got a brilliant idea. I would just draw him a mouth, and BOOM, the nose would be a nose! I was right, too.

That solved my problem. Clearly the pink part was his nose. But now I had diglett in my app and later on when my siblings and I were stuck we turned it into a game. And some of the entries were frankly too fun not to share.

it's probably not worth reccing since it's been removed from ao3 and only accessible after a five round brawl with the waybackmachine in an arby's parking lot, but i have to mention litany in which certain things are crossed out by Ayes/sayesayes changed my brain chemistry and GOD i wish it was still up...........

Cicero to 54th/Cermak and straight back to Cicero! We are on the pink line and around 90 minutes ahead of schedule. Now is when it would start to get a little hairy as we would approach rush hour but right now I might end up actually too early to try and catch the purple at Belmont as I had hoped I might manage. In any case we are well on our way to Clark and Lake, where I'll walk to Washington/Wells and catch the Brown Line. Might even stop at Arby's for a beverage and perhaps some Meats.

Next in "things tumblr will probably like," this WTNV fan piece I did a couple of years ago. It proved very hard to photograph, which is why I did it twice.
