summary: you and coriolanus have been dating in secret for months, all it takes is one songbird for everything to come into the light.

Over the past eighteen years you couldn't picture a single day you and Coriolanus hadn't spent together. Birthdays, school days, even throughout the war, you spent time together.

Today was different. He hadn't met you this morning and you couldn't help but miss his presence. His character enveloped a room, always making it clear he was there without really having to say a word. You found it comforting, others found it threatening.

The Tributes arrived early this morning and it was something you had dreaded, very soon you would actually have to meet Wovey. Mentor her, care for her, and it riddled you with guilt knowing that it was all a challenge. Her life was a challenge to you.

Coryo's presence could've softened that burden and yet, he wasn't here. No warning no explanation he just didn't show.

"Where's Snow?" Asked Arachne as you all stood outside your classroom at the Academy, preparing for yet another lecture from Casca.

"I wouldn't know." You shrugged, secretly seething at your boyfriends disregard to tell you where he was going before he disappeared.

"Oh please. You two are practically attached at the hip." Scoffed Festus. Fixing his hair in a small compact mirror which he carried around in his bag.

"I heard he's with his songbird." Mock sang Felix. Knowing it would most likely piss you off to the high heavens.

"And where did you hear that, Felix?" You asked, tilting your head in questions, eyebrows furrowed. While Felix was a tease he was not a liar.

"Lucky's newest interview. He was in the zoo with the tributes, I mean it was almost comedic. But, I've got to say the most interesting part was when they held hands." He said. You couldn't hide the anger on your face no matter how hard you tried and it was only made worse when you spotted Sejanus' sympathetic glance from over his shoulder.

"Well, he is very motivated to win the Prize I suppose." You murmured, now embarrassed, even if they weren't aware he was your boyfriend he was supposed to be your closest ally and here he was prancing around with his new decoration.

Much to your pleasure the large wooden door swung open, everybody filing into the room and taking their assigned seats, the one next to yours empty.

His seat.

Finally, minutes later he entered looking rather sheepish. If he was ashamed you were glad, he should be.

"Your little excursion is in violation of about five Academy rules Mr Snow." Spoke Casca. Deep down you were pleased that he had broken rules, pleading in your mind that this would prevent any further ventures. "Amongst them, endangering a Capitol student."

"Who?" He asked, stopping in his tracks as though he was insulted by the accusation.

"You. I'm moving for the Game makers to disqualify you as a mentor immediately." Casca answered. Guiltily you were happy, you just hoped your face didn't show it as Coriolanus sat down next to you.

"You said that we had to get our tributes to perform, not that we had to stay away." He said leaning against the banister of your seats.

"I don't believe holding their hands was in that agreement." You snarled from behind him and you immediately regretted it as he turned to you, hurt that you weren't defending him.

"Right you are Miss L/N." Casca replied.

"Holding her hand, introducing her to people. You make it look as if were one in the same as those animas." Arachne added. You didn't agree with that, they were very much the same as us but his effort to care for her wounded you internally.

"Coriolanus didn't show those people anything they didn't already know. That the tributes are human beings. Just like us. That's why nobody wants to watch the Games, because people know deep down, that winning a war ten years ago doesn't justify starving peoples children." Sejanus added, yet you couldn't help but feel like Coriolanus didn't truly agree, he just wanted to be let loose for his wrong doings.

"Snow fell. Down in the cage, it fell down in the cage but it landed-" Doctor Gaul appeared, frightening you and many others. She had an atmosphere similar to Coriolanus, threatening and brazen. Maybe that should've scared you more than any District Twelve girl, yet it didn't.

"On stage." Snow finished her riddle without hesitation.

"You're good at games. Maybe one day you'll be a Game maker like me." She grinned evilly. You didn't miss Coriolanus' smile when hearing this and something deep within you stirred.

"Only if the games continue at all." Casca replied.

"Oh they'll continue, with performances like young Mr Snow in that zoo. In fact I came to ask your star Mentor a question. What are the Hunger Games for?" She said confidently.

"They're to punish the Districts for their uprising. To commemorate the end of the war." Coriolanus answered thou hit felt scripted and to some extent it was. That very answer was drilled into your heads from the moment you entered the Academy.

Sejanus began to discredit the Games, calling them what they are. Cruel. Doctor Gaul didn't like that.

"Perhaps the Capitol students are ill suited to be mentoring tributes, perhaps the Games time has passed." Casca said and something about it told you he was on Sejanus' side, that he didn't agree with the very games he created.

"Dean Highbottom is wrong. My classmates too. Maybe Sejanus is onto something, maybe we should be viewing those tributes as human beings." Coriolanus spoke and you tugged at his shirt for him to sit down, to stop defending this inhumane act but he slapped your hand away. "I mean you saw those kids in the zoo, they just wanted to get to know Lucy Gray. If we need people to watch we should be letting them get closer to the tributes before the games. Make the stakes personal." You felt embarrassed by his every word. Embarrassed by his obsession with Lucy Gray and embarrassed that he believed in these games.

"Who will watch the games if they care what happens to the tributes?" Asked Doctor Gaul and even to you, the answer was obvious. Everyone.

"Everyone." Answered Snow, predictable. "If they thought the tribute they cared about had a chance of winning, people need someone to root for and against. We need them to invest. If we bend a few Capitol laws, we could even have them place bets." He continued his proposal.

"You forget you're talking about real people Coriolanus, not just characters in your wider game." You said, eyes cold as he once again turned to you seeming betrayed, you no longer cared.

"Look I know Lucy Gray may not win in the arena but if you give her a chance, I would bet the Plinth Prize that she can win peoples attention." He ignored you, instead once again talking about Lucy. You felt sick by his obsession, betrayed. How long had you been the one to care for him, to root for him and here he was digging a dagger in your heart.

"I would like you to write up a proposal of these thoughts tonight Mr Snow." Doctor Gaul stated. "Perhaps your classmate can help you?" She smirked towards you in question.

You shook your head while keeping your eyes trained on the front of the room, you refused to be apart of his play for Lucy Gray's victory.

You sat alone at lunch, thinking. What was going on between him and that girl and why was he suddenly the Games biggest supporter. You understood the Plinth Prize meant a lot to him. That it would open doors but this was a step too far.

"Y/N, a pleasure." A voice you knew all too well said as it took the seat across from you.

"Coriolanus." You answered bluntly before taking another bite of your sandwich. He could tell something was off from the moment you used his full name, usually calling him Coryo.

"What was that little show back there, hm?" He asked, blue eyes a weapon as he glared at you. Something you had never been on the receiving end of before.

"I could ask you the same thing." You replied, putting your food down to glare back.

"It's a competition, Y/N. One which could change my life, I know you don't have to worry about winning but this means everything to me. You know that. I know the games are animalistic but they'll go on either way-." He defended though you cut him off.

"That's what you think I'm upset about?" You said, exaggerating the 'that's'.

"It's not?" He asked, now curious.

"I don't know, Coriolanus maybe I'm upset about you being obsessed with Lucy Gray. I mean, she's all you've spoken about since the Reaping, you held her hand! Risked your life for her!" You exclaimed in angry, drawing attention to your table.

"Oh what, so your jealous?" He smirked, clearly amused by your outrage.

"Jealous does little to describe what I am feeling, Snow. This is another level. When will you realise that that girl is using you, just as you are using her. Nothing more nothing less. I however am still here, I have been there for years, for you!" You shouted once more and he grew agitated as the room stared, grabbing your wrist with unnecessary aggression to pull your face down to this.

"Don't make a scene Y/N. You're acting like a little girl." He gritted out through his teeth.

"Fuck you, Coriolanus Snow." You replied equally quiet and with menace laced in your words. You saw his face change, as if the anger once there was replaced by a mask of sympathy. It felt ingenuine.

"Come on, Y/N. You know I love you right? I have for how long now, years." He said with kind eyes.

"Don't kid yourself." You scoffed. Though his face stayed the same his grip on your wrist tightened, leaving pink indentations.

"I love you, Y/N. Okay? Not Lucy Gray. She's my tribute just like you said, nothing more nothing less." He once again reassured, never giving up his hold.

Finally the fire in your heart gave out to him and his stupid Snow charm. It never failed to make you swoon and hearing those three words, ones you gave to each other not very often, you just wished to be in his arms.

"Okay." You retreated.

"Okay and?" He asked.

"I love you too." You answered, relieved when he let your wrist go, you were quick to move it below the table, scared to see what he had done to your wrist.

"Good. Now come on, I'm going to give some food to Lucy Gray, strengthen her, I assume you would like to meet Wovey." He said, getting up from his chair. You didn't want to meet Wovey, not really, scared to look her in the eyes. You did however want to meet his pretty little Songbird.

You walked together, hand in hand towards the zoo. He was back to his caring self after the flash of rage you previously saw. It wasn't the first time that side of him had flashed and you knew it wouldn't be the last but moments like these made it all worth it.

Your relationship was secret, but you felt no need to hide it anymore, now determined to show he was yours. Show everyone.

At first you stuck by his side, even when he spoke to Lucy Gray and you felt yourself flinch as she rushed over.

"That for us?" She asked as he held food out to her. Watching as she gave some to her fellow District Twelve Tribute, Jessup. "And who might this be?" She asked, eyeing up your joint hands.

"Wovey's mentor." He answered, without a second thought. Though when you squeezed his hand, his answer changed. "My girlfriend, I mean. Y/N L/N."

"Well Miss L/N, you sure do have the cream of the crop here with Mr Snow. He's a lovely young man." She smiled at you, you couldn't tell if it was your own paranoia telling you it was ingenuine or if she really didn't feel happy for you.

"Oh, and don't I know it." You smiled back. "You've equally had such luck I must say. He's a fine mentor." You added, patting his chest as you boosted his ego.

"Well, thank you." He said, kissing your forehead. "But uh, could you give me and Lucy Gray a moment, Mentor to Tribute?" He asked and that once burnt out flame of jealousy flickered within you as you left to speak to Wovey. You watched as they now leant against the fence to talk, lips inches away, crouched together.

Wovey was a sweet young girl, grateful as you gave her food and she shared it with Bobbin who she had been sat with, you didn't mind her sharing seeing as some Mentors has made little effort to offer any help.

You patted her shoulder through the fence, promising your support to help her reach the end of the games though it seemed she didn't care about winning and you admired her bravery.

A scream cut said conversation short as you looked to see Arachne's neck being stabbed with a smashed glass bottle. Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

You and Coriolanus both rushed over. Even if she was mean and bitchy she was your friend for the last five years and you had grown fond of the girl.

You whispered reassurances as she cried, placing pressure on her neck until you were literally dragged off of her by Peacekeepers, watching as her final breath left her body.

"No, no, no." You whispered with glassy eyes as her body became smaller and smaller on the ground - until it was too far into the distance to see.

It was clear the games had officially begun, and the tributes were winning.

The moment he saw you on the screen at the reaping ceremony, Coriolanus knew he was fucked. 

Falling for his assigned tribute wasn't part of the plan and could complicate his role as a mentor — or jeopardize his shot at winning the Plinth prize —, but as they say, you can’t help who you fall for.

The night before the games, Coriolanus sneaked down to the Capitol zoo to talk to you. It was risky to go there without any security after what happened to Arachne Crane, but it was night-time. He assumed the tributes would all be sleeping.

And he needed this last moment before he might never see you again.

You were sleeping as soundly as one could against a big rock when you heard your name. The voice was just above a whisper, not trying to wake the other tributes. 

Stirring from your sleep, you frowned as you recognized the voice of your mentor. ‘’Coryo?’’ you whispered into the darkness, squinting to see through the shadows.

You heard your name again, this time clearer, and you stood to meet him at the gates where he was usually waiting for you with a sandwich or a cookie. But unlike the other days, his hands were empty as he waited for you.

‘’What are you doing here?’’ you asked, a small smile curling on your lips. 

Even through the dark, you could make out the blue of his eyes. He was so beautiful.

‘’I apologize for waking you during your last hours of rest, but I needed to see you. To…thank you for saving me back in the arena.’’

You shrugged. ‘’If I want you to help me in there, I was gonna need my mentor.’’

Coriolanus nodded. Although he wished you had saved him because you cared about him, he understood that your mind was focused on the game. After all, it was your life who was on the stake, not his. 

Sensing your worry and fear, his hands found yours through the gates, gently caressing the back of it with his thumb. ‘’Everything is gonna be okay,’’ Coriolanus promised. ‘’You will win. I believe in you.’’

‘’Some of the other tributes are stronger than me, Coryo. It’s not looking to be in my favor…’’ A tear fell from your eyes and he quickly wiped it with a handkerchief. 

‘’Don’t think about what you can’t do and focus on what you can do. You’re intelligent, quick and small enough to fit in any of the vents. Never forget your best ally — there are cameras everywhere watching. Get the public’s attention and heart and they will send money to help you. I will help you, I’m gonna get you out of here.’’ 

He seemed sincere, so you believed him. He was the only person from the outside who could help you.

His hand, who wiped your tears, was still on your face, resting against your cheek. It felt nice, you decided. You never wanted him to stop touching your face. 

Without realizing, you were both slowly leaning in. Your mouths were about to touch, but Coriolanus dodged your kiss. 

‘’Sorry, I shouldn’t have—’’ you quickly apologized, breaking all contact with him. ‘’I misread the situation.’’

The blond shook his head. ‘’No. You have not,’’ he assured. ‘’I want to kiss you, I really do, but I’d rather kiss you after your victory.’’

You looked down, not as optimistic as him. 

Coriolanus pressed his forehead against yours through the bars of the gates. ‘’Don’t die in there. I expect a kiss when you get back.’’ 

‘’I’ll try not to.’’

From what I've played of Hades 2, which is frankly a lot, I have a feeling Melinoe is supposed to the right the gods' wrongs. You're allies who aren't gods generally have poor history with the gods, like Arachne, and then the ones who are gods, like Moros, just be straight up admitting they make things crueler for humans to amuse themselves. Like damn, no wonder Chronos is able to get a fucking aemy against Olympus. Probs after Chronos is gone for good, the after content may just be Melinoe addressing the very valid criticisms mortals have against her family and trying to fix their mistakes.

This is probably extremely niche (or not, I dunno) but my brother and I were playing Skylander Trap Team, and that got me thinking about Percy Jackson characters as Skylanders (ie their element, their catchphrases, their move set, etc.) So, I decided to answer these pressing questions with the Seven, Nico, and Reyna(maybe I'll do a part 2). Also, some of the characters I could not choose one element so I made them a Swap Force. I know that's not how Swap Force works (which is that you can mix and match top pieces with bottom pieces to create new characters with different skill sets) but some of them really are a tie between two elements and I have to do it. (I did not do combos with Light/Dark as those elements were first introduced in Trap Team and not Swap Force.) Also also, if their catchphrases suck, no they don't. I tried.

Percy Jackson:

Element — Water

Attacks —

+Creating a whirlpool that he floats in (like in TLO)

+Creating a wave when Riptide hits the ground

Note, I kept switching whether Fire or Tech was his top half or bottom half, but this was chosen because most of his fire powers come from his hands (ie top) and belts are on the bottom half of Swap Force characters which makes his tool belt, and therefore tech, the bottom half.

Arcane/League + Soul Eater crossover AU ideas

- Jinx is a meister, and Vi is a weapon (like that of the Atlas Gauntlets). While Vi was weilded by Claggor and Mylo as kids when they'd get up to trouble, she'd allow Jinx to weild her by the start of the series.

- Viktor tries to help develop demon weapons on the side of the allies until said allies inevitably betray him.

- Sevika is a weapon, but ever since she decided to go rogue against Vander, and when she lost her arm, she stays half in weapon form

- Jinx has weilded Sevika before, who might be a gatling gun, mini gun, and/or bladed weapon. 'Would be interesting if Sevika was Pow-Pow.

- A reason why Silco was estranged and had to work so hard to become a leader was because he was a lone weapon. Consider: Silco as Fishbones (or Fishbones containing his soul)

- Stein and Singed as enemy rivals.

- Double augmentation: Just as people can be augmented with hextech, so can demon weapons.

- Arachne and Silco in kahoots together against Piltover and the DWMA.

- Silco is not a witch, but witches trust him more than anyone outside of their circles.

- Finn, Renni, Smeech, and other chem-barons are followers of Arachne, just as characters like Giriko and Mosquito would be followers of Silco.

- yordle!Mosquito

- Jayce is a meister. I can't decide if Viktor is a weapon (especially as a Zaunite) who chooses to weild hextech, or if his interactions with The Void have corrupted his soul resonance abilities as a meister and he now depends on hextech to defend himself... OR Viktor’s illness diminished his abilities to transform into a weapon correctly or efficiently, so he depends on hextech.

- Something something Azusa Yumi and Caitlyn :)

- Marie, as a topsider, sympathizes with the Zaunites (and the children of Zaun to include our main characters of Vi and Powder) to the point that other Pilties tend to question her loving judgement.

- Something something Lord Death and Heimerdinger!

- As he grew complacent to Piltover's demands [for an effort towards peace], Vander was restrictive about Violet transforming into her weapon form.

- On that note, Vander could be a weapon who chooses not to transform. He sympathizes with Vi's want for rebellion, but tries to stay to his new-found principles. This would also allow for another element of tension between him and Silco. ("You'd die for the cause, but you won't fight for it?")

- Stein in a battle of wits in admiring Jinx, Viktor, and Silco. He can't help but be fascinated by their rough advances in science and their determinations.

- Stein microdoses shimmer like that of Viktor...

- "Madness" being synonymous with, related to, or originating from The Void ("the Void is a manifestation of the unknowable nothingness that lies beyond. It is a force of insatiable hunger ... To be a mortal touched by this power is to suffer an agonizing glimpse of eternal unreality, enough to shatter even the strongest mind.") Something something the book of Eibon + "the onset of madness" and the Void.

- Stein helping Viktor with shimmer, Viktor helping him with augmentation.

- Black Star was born in Zaun but was brought to Piltover as a baby. He runs into the main crew of Zaunite kids (Vi, Ekko, etc) as a pre-teen and has not been influenced by topside to see them any different from himself. He helps them get up to crafty shenanigans.

- Kid as the youngest member of the high council.

- Liz and Patty as Zaunites.

- While Zaunites (or at least Silco and chem-barons) get along with witches, they still face a bigger rogue evil: Medusa.

- Instead of black blood, shimmer; instead of shimmer, black blood. Or both!

- Medusa manages bigger ideas for evil in administering shimmer into Crona + Ragnarok and/or the kishin.

- Fire and Thunder as yordles? Could that be a thing?

- Stein and Heimerdinger as collaborators, up until the point Stein realizes how much Heimerdinger prioritizes the ignorance of arcane magic, especially after Viktor and Jayce prove it's scientific potential.

- Heimerdinger and Exclaibur. I just want to see them in the same room together. Hell, yordle!Excalibur, or Heimerdinger being equal to Excalibur in power. While I'd begin to headcanon him as a meister, screw it, weapon!Heimerdinger (despite that this goes against the idea that weapons are looked down upon by Pilties).

- High council meetings in the Death Room.

- Exclaibur being a guest of honor to the high council (at what cost...)

- Hextech/hex crystals and Brew Tempest...

- Don't let Gopher meet Silco. He'll probably love him more than he loves Lord Noah. Silco would use him in very similar ways that Noah does.

- Head-to-head rivalry for the kishin and/or Brew/Hextech specifically between Noah and Silco. Yes, I think Noah could instantly crush Silco, but Silco is far more strategically cunning.

- Viktor and Sky as a weapon/meister duo to some capacity :) heh

- If Caitlyn were a weapon, she'd have a momentary partnership with Jayce. If she were a meister, she'd partner with Violet. (imagine Caitlyn with the Atlas Gauntlets!)

- Something something Justin Law and Marcus?

- While I'd begin to think the main cast of Soul Eater kids are of similar ages to Violet, Powder, Claggor, etc, it'd be interesting if they could go to school with characters like that of Sky and Viktor.

- Something something Grayson and Auntie having similar dynamics and possibly even being a duo.

- Silco, Viktor, and/or Jinx facing madness. Or, really, literally any of the Arcane characters facing madness in the way all of the characters do in [the] Soul Eater [manga]

- Something something Vi and Maka... I just want to see how they'd interact...

- Stein and Jinx getting along... I just feel like they'd resonate, but I can't place exactly how. Jinx would tease him so bad.

I wish I could put this together better, or have a poetic zinger to get to the heart of this matter, But I really think that when you think about it, you'll also realize that Coriolanus never left the arena, and this lead to him realizing that he was really good at playing the Hunger Games, and thus made the entire world of Panem an arena. Because if you can control the one and only game, than of course you will always land on top.

I don't think I could go so far as to say that it was his coping mechanism, but since he clearly was a touch traumatized from the up close death of Arachne, the death of his fellow students and the bombing itself, including the fact that over the course of weeks Coriolanus was literally an eighteen year old that was put into the position of plotting other teens deaths in order to come out on top, as well as being ordered to go into the arena itself and had to kill another person in self defense, all leads to how he ended up viewing the world as an entire arena even after the games were over.

He literally betrays his two "allies" in Sejanus and Lucy Grey because he never stopped being inside the arena.*

I do however think that the biggest factor that leads into this is that in Mockingjay, its revealed that he used Game techniques as defenses against the city. With Mutts and pods that killed anyone who triggered them, not just rebels.

that's not really a sign of someone who is viewing the world with even a semi normal brain. Granted, it was an effective defense, but only for very short periods of time, and not very effective against literal armies, or even just several legions. Seriously, If Snow had thought just once outside his arena worldview, he would probably had thought of better strategies against the rebels, or even had seen that he was truly on a losing game and had surrendered far earlier. relying entirely on gamemaker logic was what lead him to such a defeat.

Because maybe we could talk about how Coriolanus never left the arena, while Katniss and every other tribute tried to leave.

Time Loop - Reaper's edition

previously thought about a time loop with Clemmie reliving the events of the 10th game over and over, now thinking about Reaper in the same situation.

The first iteration goes down exactly as it does in the book. But instead of death, he wakes up back on the day of the Reaping. This time, when Coriolanus inevitably runs his mouth, Reaper manages to dodge the knee to his crotch and just shoves him to the ground. HARD.

He's got some beef with Lucy Gray. The memories of what she did with the flag are pretty fresh. And just maybe the second time around, Lucy Gray dies first.

From the time loops, he's starting to lose his mind. He's befriended a number of tributes over the loops, but nobody else save him remembers the past loops. Dill keeps dying. The snakes keep getting set loose. His mentor just disappears after that loud mouthed mentor (Arachne) dies and doesn't feed him till the very last day. Because of this, he and Clemensia don't really interact in any of the time loops.

Shoving Coriolanus into the truck wall gets boring after the 5th time. Sometimes, he lets the other tributes get a go at it - his fav iteration may have been when Bobbin took matters into hand.

And it doesn't matter if he wins or loses the games, he's always brought back to the day of the Reaping.

In one iteration he does finally talk to Clemensia - he's thinking, what have I got to lose at this point? Things don't go smoothly on their first meeting. She attempts to make conversation/fill out the questionnaire, he's annoyed by how it's nothing more than an assignment to her. It doesn't lead to anything physical, but the 2 are angry enough to go from petty jabs like - Reaper being reaped with a name like that, to the rights of those in the Districts vs Capitol. People are staring as they start shouting at one another.

Which is surprising that she appears at the enclosure that night, food in hand and an apology? He's baffled. Doesn't trust the food. They split the food and he watches her get halfway through the sandwich before he agrees to take a bite out of it.

They're not exactly friends in this loop. Just allies, who think the other is strange. They've promised to be honest at least. The night the loud mouthed mentor dies, she mentions something about a paper to submit on how to 'improve' the games, like betting as Coriolanus had suggested. He brings up the idea of 'gifts'. She still disappears after the loud mouthed mentor dies. He does ask about her, but all he gets is that she's not feeling well.

In this iteration, he makes his escape during the explosion. In this one, Clemmie manages to make it out of the hospital unnoticed and they run into each other. Shocked as they are by the other, they do quickly form an alliance as neither wants to be caught.

Reaper has better luck than Marcus in canon, given Clemmie is his unofficial guide around the Capitol. He feels a bit guilty having to steal certain things so they can blend in a lot easier with the population given his district clothes and her hospital attire.

One of the jackets stolen has a nice wad of cash within it. They get a room in a seedy motel while trying to figure out where to go from here. Clemmie has to do the talking since his accent will give him away.

She has a better grip on her emotions unlike the book when she finds Coriolanus in the hospital. Mainly because Reaper takes her a lot more seriously when she confesses that she thinks Gaul is going to kill her. He's lived through enough time loops to think, "Yeah, that's plausible." Better is also subjective, she's very tense and her emotions are everywhere.

He gets the snake story out of her, is a bit horrified. Does also wonder about her fate in previous loops. And figures - okay, we've gone this far anyway, might as well tell her about the time loop he's stuck in. She thinks he's joking at first, before realizing he's dead serious.

Is anyone else in on this? / No. / Oh. I'm sorry. / What for? / It can't be easy. / No. No, it isn't.

There is an attempt at plotting - she cannot do very much for him, but with the remainder of the cash, she does outline what she thinks possible methods are escape are, places to avoid, the train station etc.

She also tells him - if it loops again for you, and you want to convince me, this is what you can do. [insert fact or action that she in a normal scenario would have never told him about]

He still wants to get the other tributes out. Clemmie reluctantly agrees to help, even if she thinks this won't end very well.

And in this loop, he dies before the games have begun, and the last thing he hears is her screaming.

It's that season again so fuck it, TMA Tour de France AU

Jon is a GC contender and the team leader for Ocula-Arachne, a well-funded, competitive team with several previous Tour winners to their name. He was the second-place finisher at the previous year's Tour, and is looking to bring home the yellow jersey this year. He placed well in the Spring Classics, but a bad crash and a fractured ankle have meant he missed the last several weeks of racing. It was uncertain whether he'd even compete in the Tour until the team roster was announced shortly beforehand, and he's coming into it feeling like he needs to prove himself.

Martin is a time trial specialist, but has been made team leader of Solus this year and is competing for the GC. It's his first time riding for yellow - he placed in the top ten at last year's Tour and has been absolutely killing it in the Classics, drawing media attention and pressure for the first time in his career. He seems to be getting better and better as the season goes on, but there are questions on if he's got the team to back him up - their tactics often leave him riding alone, hanging onto the wheels of his rivals rather than protected in the middle of his allies. Rumors of his rivalry with Jon are perhaps exaggerated - they touched wheels in one of the first races they were in together and both crashed out, but whatever grudge Jon held from that has faded as they've found themselves going head-to-head in recent races, and they are often seen chatting amicably as they wait for stages to start or bantering good-naturedly after they finish. Still, building on that early enmity makes for good tv.

Tim is Jon's right-hand-rider and an absolute powerhouse in the mountains, known for being able to drag him up the toughest climbs even when he's having a bad day. There's speculation that he could be a future GC contender himself - he placed fourth in the Tour last year, and possibly could have made the podium if he hadn't had to sacrifice his own race for Jon's. He probably would have been team leader this year if Jon's injuries had kept him from riding, and commentators love discussing if the team made the right decision not to bring him forward. If he harbors any private resentments about being passed over, he's done a very good job keeping them out of the public eye.

Sasha is a breakaway specialist and a former teammate of Jon and Tim. At the end of last season she transferred to team Drugoy-Tsirk - they've got a smaller budget, but they give her the opportunity to ride for herself for stage wins, rather than hanging back to support Jon. There's barely a breakaway attempt made where she isn't one of the riders in it, and she's won most aggressive rider several times already this season. There's no hard feelings toward her from Jon and Tim about the team switch, though they do find it disconcerting how they almost don't recognize her among the peloton in her new red and gold uniform...

Melanie is a sprint specialist for Nemesis-Lancraig, two-time winner of the green jersey and looking for a third. She's received criticism in the past for her aggressive riding style, and been relegated at least once under the accusation of elbowing another rider out of the way during a bunch sprint. She denies it, and the negative press only drives her harder to prove herself. She hates Jon, and it's mutual - in a race early in both their careers, his attempts to gain time in the GC got in the way of her attempts to win a stage via sprint, and vis versa. Both lost, and both still bear a grudge over it.

Georgie is Melanie's chief lead-out rider and recent girlfriend, though they're trying to keep that out of the press. She's got a knack for finding a good line through a bunch sprint to launch Melanie to the finish, and has been courted by several other teams looking to add her to their roster - but she's happy where she is. She tries not to get in the middle of the rivalry between Melanie and Jon - she and Jon rode together before turning professional and helped each other's careers a lot, and they're still on quite good terms when they meet.

Basira is the team leader for Everchase-Z, and the reigning champion from last year's Tour. An experienced professional, she's maintained cordial if distant relationships with her competitors and is well-respected by all. She's here to defend her title, and is favored to do so by all estimates - no injuries, no illness, and an ever-predictive win in the Critérium du Dauphiné mean that she's coming into this race as the rider to beat, and she doesn't intend to let anyone do so.

Daisy is Basira's right-hand-rider and has been so for the entirety of their professional careers. Ever-loyal, ever-dependable, she's pretty much unstoppable when it comes to catching breakaways - she's snatched several wins right out from under Sasha’s nose, bridging the gap from the peloton in a burst of speed and dragging them back to the group - or launching Basira ahead for a solo win. If she's on your tail, it's almost a guarantee that you're going to get caught: marked, paced, and hunted down with the precision of an expert.

I don't have plot for all 21 days of racing, but I do have the pivotal moment in week 2:

Basira has a lead of several minutes on Jon. He's in second, with Martin only 30 seconds behind him for third. Tim is in fourth, only about 20 seconds behind Martin, and he'd probably be ahead of him if he hadn't had to drop back from a breakaway in an early hilly stage to help Jon. Melanie has two stage wins to her name and feels like she's letting her team down. Sasha has one stage win, and is marking the entire Tour as an unequivocal success.

Halfway through week two, they're in the high mountains. Sasha tried for an early break but got brought back by Daisy; Melanie zipped ahead to snag a few sprint points in the foothills, and is spending the rest of the day in the gruppetto, hanging with the rest of the sprinters and chatting (flirting) with Georgie. Early on the penultimate climb Basira got away from the rest of the contenders and gained a devastating lead, putting more than a minute into them before they were even halfway up. Tim managed to hang with her for a bit before being called back to help Jon, who was struggling; Martin, with no teammates to help him, has been chugging along between the two, no chance of catching Basira but dangerously close to pulling into second place if Jon can't find his legs.

Tim drops behind Martin. He rendezvous with Jon, and starts the laborious process of trying to catch Martin again. After several arduous minutes of effort, they do. Tim is beat and has no more to give, so Jon swaps over to Martin’s wheel, hanging with him as Tim falls behind and trying to ignore the throbbing in his still-not-fully-healed ankle. He could just stay here, pace Martin, keep his second place and leave first for another day, but-

Basira reaches the top of the climb and begins the long, fast descent. She's not taking any chances, playing it safe, and Elias (the Ocula team director) is on the team radio shouting at Jon that this is his chance, he's a good descender, if he can get over the top of this climb first not only can he leave Martin in his dust but he can scrape some time back on Basira too, he's still got a chance at yellow-

Jon gathers all his reserves of strength into a burst of speed, passing Martin and charging for the top of the climb. Martin sticks out his tongue as Jon passes, trying and failing to keep up, and Jon grins at him over his shoulder as a gap grows between them. There's enough distance to the top that he pulls that gap to almost 20 seconds before he gets there, and it stretches, elastic, as he starts the descent at full speed and Martin is left still slogging up the uphill behind him.

It's a tricky descent. Lots of sharp corners, narrow roads, pavement slightly damp from a recent rain. Elias is in Jon's earpiece, telling him to push it faster, take more chances, this isn't the time to play it safe, Basira's almost at the bottom but you can catch her-

Jon takes a corner too fast. He doesn't see the paint on the road until it's too late. His wheel loses traction; slips.

The camera on the motorbike ahead of him only sees him start to tip sideways before it's around the curve and out of view. Jon doesn't follow, and every commentator on every TV outlet across the world starts freaking out, asking if they can get a camera in there, what happened, did he crash?? The motorbike can't go backward, though, it would clog up the whole race, so they holster the camera and keep going. They'll slow down if they're needed to track riders coming up from behind, or speed up if the producers want more eyes on Basira. Finding out what happened to Jon will have to be a job for someone else.

Martin makes it to the top of the climb and starts the descent with a sigh of relief. He's alone; for some reason the motorbikes never seem to follow the Solus riders, even if they are in the top three. His earpiece is pretty quiet, too, since Peter (team director) takes a pretty hands-off approach to the whole "directing" thing. He knows his two competitors are ahead of him, though, so he takes a few more risks than he normally would on a descent like this, getting as much speed as he can without losing control of his bike.

Heading into a turn, he sees a bike tangled in the weeds on the outside edge of the road, mangled and broken. He eases up on the speed so as not to repeat the crash, not thinking too much about it.

He's ten feet away when he spots the radio on the ground and realizes the crashed rider can't call in for help.

He's five feet away when he recognizes Jon's bike, and realizes Jon himself is nowhere to be seen.

He's off his bike and running before he even thinks about it.

There's a sharp drop off at the edge of the road, a steep slope covered in thick-growing trees and underbrush. Martin skids down it, cleats digging ruts in the grass as he tries not to lose his balance. One hand finds his radio, he shouts for the medical car, and then all his focus is on the trees around him, searching desperately for a flash of Jon's jersey, calling his name.

It can only be a few seconds before he spots him. His team confirms later, it's a very short time between his first call through the radio and his second. But it feels like an eternity of crashing around through those trees, desperate, panicking, race entirely forgotten on the road behind him, before he finally finds Jon.

He's sprawled on the forest floor in a dip between two trees, his jersey torn to shreds, his helmet cracked in two, his leg twisted at an unnatural angle. Blood wells up from a deep gash in his side, and his eyelids are flickering, unfocused, barely-conscious.

"Jon!"

Martin drops to his knees, hands fluttering around, not sure where to begin. Jon's mouth moves, an exhale of breath that sounds almost like Martin’s name.

("I'm fine, Martin." Later, Jon remembers saying the words with absolute confidence, the concussed certainty that he only needed a minute to rest before he'd be back on his bike. "Keep racing, I'll be up again soon.")

Then his eyes roll back in his head and he slumps to the ground, unconscious.

Martin's brain kicks back into gear. With one hand, he presses down on the wound in Jon's side, trying to staunch the blood flow (Oh god, there's so much blood, he must be cut deep-) and with the other he fumbles for his radio again, finally tuning in to the fact that Peter has been yelling in his ear this whole time.

"-crash? Can you get back on your bike? The car's going to take some time, can you keep riding?"

"Medic!" Martin snaps again, not listening.

"Martin!" Peter sounds more exasperated than relieved. "Where’d you crash? Can you keep riding?"

"Not me," Martin manages. "It's Jon, he- Jon Sims, from Ocula, he's- he crashed ahead of me."

"Sims?" Peter sounds baffled. "You're fine, then? Get back on the bike, we've got a chance at second!"

Martin doesn't move. "He's hurt bad. Where's the medical car?"

"A few minutes out, they're behind a few groups on the climb. Look, I've called in the crash, they're on their way, you don't need to worry. Just get back on your bike and keep riding, this is your chance!"

"I can't leave him!" Martin protests. He doesn't know a lot about medical science, but he can see the amount of blood on the leaves around them and how pale Jon's face has gone. He doesn't dare take his hand off the wound.

"Martin-"

He rips the radio from his ear, drops his other hand to Jon's side, and applies more pressure.

(News of the crash spreads over the race radio. In the Ocula car, Elias curses, slamming his hand into the dashboard hard enough to bruise. Then he picks up the radio again, flicking over to the team channel.

"Tim," he barks. "Jon crashed out, we're riding for you now. Try to get as much time back as you can before the finish, we'll reevaluate our strategy tonight."

"What?" Tim claps a hand to his radio - he's been soft-pedaling, waiting for the group behind to catch up so he can have an easier ride to the finish, but now he digs down for reserves of strength he didn't know he had and picks up the tempo. "Is Jon-"

"He's fine," Elias spits, motivation rather than truth. "Ride like a man and you might pull second over Blackwood."

Tim rolls his eyes and removes the radio - he's never envied Jon the kind of pressure Elias puts on the team leader - crests the top of the climb, and starts the descent. When he passes the crash he pays it no mind - Elias said Jon was fine, and he has a race to focus on.)

The minutes drag by with agonizing slowness for Martin. His eyes are glued to Jon's face; his hands shaking where he presses them to his side. He doesn't think he's imagining the way Jon's breathing is growing shallow and uneven, and there's an unspoken terror in his heart as he counts down the seconds until the medical car arrives.

The sound of an engine. A shout in French. "Here!" Martin yells back, whipping his head around. "Er- ici! Nous sommes ici!"

Everything is movement and noise from there. A few paramedics come hurrying down the slope toward them, faces turning worried as they spot Jon. One gently pushes Martin out of the way, taking his place to apply pressure to the wound; the other runs back to the car, shouting something Martin can't understand.

He finds himself standing on the sidelines, leaning against a tree, watching in a state of numb shock as they bring bandages down, start carefully trying to cover the worst of the wounds. He thinks a few minutes pass, but it feels like only seconds before there's the shrill sound of an ambulance siren on the road above and then more people are rushing around, they're loading Jon onto a stretcher, and Martin is following them back up the slope, trailing slowly behind as they carry Jon away.

The vehicles are pulled as far to the edge of the road as they can be to give riders room to pass. A few groups zip by as Jon is lifted into the ambulance and hooked to an IV. A motorbike has parked a little way up the road, and the camera is fixed on the scene, capturing every detail.

One of the paramedics tosses a blanket over Martin’s shoulders and makes sure he's leaning safely against a tree. He barely even notices, eyes locked on the doors of the ambulance as they close behind Jon.

The Solus team car pulls up as the ambulance drives away. Peter gets out, gestures for Martin's spare bike to be taken off the roof and gotten ready. Then he approaches Martin.

"Okay, we've lost a lot of time," he says briskly. "Ocula sent Stoker ahead and he's probably going to take second, but you've got a chance to hang onto third if you get moving now."

Martin turns to look at him slowly. The words aren't really registering, but when the new bike is rolled in front of him he grabs the handlebars and climbs on.

The camera watches as his team director helps him balance, gives him a hearty push to get him going again. He pedals once, twice. The bike slowly wobbles forward, veers to the side, and gently bumps into a tree. Martin tips sideways, not doing anything to break his fall, and is caught by one of the doctors from the medical car, which had stayed behind after the ambulance left.

Peter looks at the doctor, and the doctor shakes their head. He gives a deep, resigned sigh.

"Okay." Peter walks over, helps Martin off his bike, hands him back the shock blanket. "Come on, then."

He's ushered into the team car. A few more minutes are spent clearing the debris from the crash scene, removing the bits of bicycle that are scattered over the road. Then the medical car leaves, and the Solus team car soon after, and finally the motorbike drives off after them.

When Jon wakes in the hospital that night, he finds his whole team gathered around his bed, with Martin sitting closest to him and holding his hand. He's flattered that they'd take time out of their recovery for him like this; horrified when he learns that Martin actually dropped out of the race to help him; shocked to realize how bad his injuries are. He thanks Martin profusely, congratulates Tim on moving into second, and falls asleep again soon after.

It's not until the next morning, when he wakes to an empty room, that the doctors tell him he probably would have died if Martin hadn't stayed with him to help minimize the blood loss.

A few days later, he's cleared for transport, and they fly him back to London so he can finish his recovery in a hospital closer to home.

Martin books a flight back the same day.

They watch the last week of the race together on the tiny television in Jon's room. Sasha pulls one more win from the breakaway; Tim holds onto second by his fingernails, going toe-to-toe against the third place rider on the final mountain stage and winning by the width of a wheel. Basira runs away with first, pulling her lead to almost six minutes, and there's no doubt in anyone's mind that she would have gone home with yellow even if Jon and Martin had stayed in the race.

Melanie sews up the green jersey competition and pulls a final stage win on the Champs-Élysées, outsprinting everyone in a spectacular finish. She yanks Georgie into a celebratory kiss in front of all the cameras, and suddenly no one is talking about Jon's crash at all anymore as news of their relationship goes public in spectacular style.

Jon and Martin’s first kiss is a quieter thing, a private moment shared some weeks later on the day Jon is told he'll be able to go home soon.

It's when he's relearning how to walk on a slowly-healing leg that they start talking about their futures: what their careers mean to them, what they mean to each other, what they're willing to risk for both.

The news that the two rising stars have quit racing doesn't break until the next season has almost begun, but with the way their teams are clearly prepared to ride without them, it's clear the decision was made much earlier.

The television coverage of the next Tour does a little "behind the scenes" package to fill time on the long, uneventful sprint stages. They get team interviews, fan reactions, local color... they catch up with Jon and Martin on holiday by the coast, taking advantage of the lovely beach weather and cheering on the passing racers from among the crowd. They talk honestly about how they reassessed their priorities after the crash, how much respect they hold for riders who can come back from something like that and keep racing, but how the risk of further injury just wasn't worth it for them. When they're asked what their plans are now, they just smile.

"Well, we've got our hands full with wedding planning at the moment," they say, holding up their hands to show off the matching engagement rings. "But we're glad to be taking some time away to cheer on our old teams..."

They drop out of public awareness soon after that, with no regrets. They still enjoy watching the race together every year, and traveling to see some of it in person when they can, but they're more than happy to leave their own racing careers well in the past.

Trap of Sisters | Yandere Medusa, Arachne, and Shaula Gorgon

The smell of the night forest was sickening as it wafted through your lungs, rapidly pushed in and out as you forced your tired body to its limits. Dashing through the thicket, scrambling to dodge past wooden obstacles in hopes of maintaining your momentum. Speed would be your only ally. You cursed the burning in your lungs and the ache in your muscles as you forged on. 

“A little out of shape are you, (Y/n)?”

You glared below you through the branches of the trees at the weapon, cursing at Giriko who gained on you from the ground. He was on the ground and you were grazing the tree line, it shouldn’t have mattered to you. Just reach the water! Just reach the water! Just– Your thoughts were interrupted when you spotted two golems with Mosquito standing dutifully on one of its shoulders. You noted he hadn’t transformed, hence it would behoove you to immobilize him quickly. 

From behind your ears, the yellow tattoo of the salamander began to move climbing to the front of your face. Flashing bright, as you collected a bubble of purple acid you aimed it in the direction of the golems. They immediately buckled and broke at the touch of it causing Mosquito to stumble and hop in hopes of escape. You smiled victoriously switching your sights to Giriko who narrowly avoided the acid-made salamanders chasing him. 

“Aaaaah!” 

He turned about face frantically carting away from your direction as you continued to traipse among the treetops. Stifling your laughter you focused on the running river just a couple of meters ahead. Without any more distractions, you could make it! Make it to the river. In your excitement you almost missed the gleaming string of silk, narrowly avoiding grazing it as you ducked below. In your haste your landing faltered, forcing yourself to continue your run on the ground. With little effort, you activated your sight, letting your sclera change to a sickly purple you pinpointed the majority of webs strewn across your path.

She knows! 

Adrenaline made your heartbeat and your legs run faster. Hyper vigilantly flipping and jerking yourself in order to avoid touching the sharp intrusive lines of silk. Barely able to breathe a sigh of relief when you reached a clearing; that under a glance of your vision proved web-free. 

“Well aren’t you out of your element? What happened to staying put?”

Racing by you almost missed the hidden soul presence of the scorpion. Smirking without a hint of glee as her scorpion stinger irritated, waved behind her head.

“S-shaula?” 

You darted on, expecting her to give chase. She did not. As suspicious as you found that you paid no heed to her shenanigans. You were so close. You ran some more once again entering a smaller stretch of woods once again avoiding various stretches of silk. All the while hearing her laughter and seeing glimpses of her between the trees. 

“So small…so weak…Hahaha!”

Her condescending remarks grated your ears only spurring you to keep doing. Once again seeing the river in sight. You figured your face reflected this considering Shaula’s telson shooting from the treeline just narrowly piercing your skin; instead slicing your already scraped-up suit. You threw an acid salamander, only hearing a disgruntled moan from her before you sped up again. If was only a clearing away. The river! You once again left the woods going into the small clearing fully prepared to dive into the river. You took one step—

Hovering a second more than you should’ve. Already knowing the truth you let your eyes fall to where your foot was placed. Within the grass was a black vector arrow shining with use as you stilled.

“Oh, crud.”

In seconds you were shot back. Delirious with whiplash you barely registered the same attack shooting you right back into a gathering of vector capture arrows.  That closed in around you as you relentlessly reached for the river just inches away. 

“Well well if it isn’t the little Salamander! I’ve missed you dearly little one!” 

You didn’t want to look up, already feeling the water gathering in your eyes as you recognized her voice. But you knew you had to…otherwise you’d regret it. 

“Medusa…”

“(Y/n). I guess you must’ve been impatient. After all, we all were meeting today.”

She played with her hair, suspiciously squinting her eyes from her perch in the sky. You turned behind you to see a more than peeved Shaula exits the forest. Lightly battered and hair whipping angrily behind her you felt an inch of pride from within you to be able to do at least that much to her. It would be your small victory. 

You smirked in her direction, relishing in her anger as she clenched her fists at you. In retaliation the arrows trapping you curled tighter around you only stopping when you turned to look at the sister responsible. Medusa went from glaring at your interaction to smiling widely when you looked at her. 

“If you were worried about being left out, (Y/n). We would have visited your grotto before we parted.”

Arachne materialized from an accumulation of spiders that place her in a nearby tree with the seating of her web. All to look sympathetic at you within Medusa's trap. Even though her words weren’t accusatory her eyes from behind her fan were; you felt the smallest hint of guilt. You looked away from her. Only Arachne could make you feel bad for attempting to leave your home entrapment. 

Shaula spoke with a newfound glee, “Well in the end it certainly made for a fun reunion.” 

She brandished her telson as she walked to the vector cage. You backed away already prepared to be stung like so many times before. She reached for the makeshift bars of your cage she shook with pain finally releasing in a surprised stupor. Medusa laughed leaning on her back as she hovered in the sky. Arachne too started chuckling from behind her fan and you almost felt compelled to laugh along with them. But if anyone was coherent of the pecking order in this family it was Shaula.

“But yes, (Y/n) aren’t you pleased to be with all your sisters again?”

“We do have to discuss the topic of rotation. It’s been far too long since we’ve kept seen you.”

“Yes, can you believe it's been years since you’ve visited my cave?”

heyy backpacks!!! i've been having some sheaf time travel thoughts lately, where she tries to stop herself and panlo dying in the bombing so they actually have a chance to participate and work their plan (headcanon that they would've worked together during the games).

it works but she keeps getting so close in the games. seeing panlo die over and over again. she slowly realises that maybe surviving the bombing and playing the games isn't what she needs to do. she - and the other tributes who, begrudgingly, she's become quite fond of - need to escape.

omg sheaf in a time loop!! here we go-

the very first time sheaf dies (book events), it's succumbing to her injuries after the bombing. she barely lives past otto (who clearly has issues with her for some reason), and wakes up back on the train. it takes her a bit to realize that she's back, rather than just waking up from a horrific nightmare, but as events start to repeat, she starts to plan. she's got a second chance, and she can't afford to waste it!

sheaf tries to subtly save brandy, just to spare herself and everyone from that terrible "funeral", but it doesn't work. she thinks she's subverted the event when brandy gets her hands on the cheese sandwich without slitting arachne's throat, but arachne doesn't magically learn a lesson, and is back the next day taunting brandy again, this time with a bottle of water. sheaf should have expected that brandy would not take the taunts lying down, knife or no knife, and when brandy smashes the bottle on the bars and stabs arachne in the throat, it is almost instinct when she grabs panlo and pulls him to the ground, right before the peacekeepers open fire.

sheaf might not have known brandy, but it's still awful watching the girl get filled with bullets. twice over now. she does manage survive the arena bombing this time, and save panlo too, so that's a plus. she makes it all the way to the arena and thinks the odds are alright. alliances have been made, but she and panlo are working together, so they can make it far, she hopes. she barely makes it a minute into the games thanks to otto, who shoots her with a crossbow. she stumbles, and he shoots her again. sheaf has no idea what his problem is. she dies, and wakes back up on the train.

it's at this point that she realizes that it wasn't a second chance, it was potentially unlimited chances. she's the only one who is being sent back like this as far as she knows, so she must be sent back for a reason, right? maybe this is a kindness, something in the universe saying that she should get to go home. so that's what she plans to do, she will win these games and go home. even if the only people that would have missed her were the others at the orphanage. even if most of d9 didn't want her back.

so she tries again. sheaf has a grudge against otto by this point, because seriously, what is that guy's deal? why is he so intent on hating her when she can't think of a single thing that she's done to him? she tries to save brandy again. it doesn't work. she makes it past the arena bombing, but it isn't enough to save panlo. he gets out with injuries, and the vet the capitol sends doesn't do enough for him, and he succumbs to his injuries. sheaf isn't prepared to go into the arena without him, and ends up dying to coral & co.

she wakes up back at the train again. she tries harder to save brandy, and succeeds! it takes snapping at arachne and shouting until the capitol girl leaves in a huff, but brandy is alive. it sparks up an alliance, and sheaf gets to know tanner and brandy better. panlo is hesitant at first, but more allies means a higher chance of survival, right? that's good, at least at the start. no one wants to talk about the case of what happens if it comes down to the four of them.

things go sideways at the arena bombing. arachne is still bitter that sheaf shouted at her (rightfully so) and makes sure that she and brandy are far away from sheaf/androcles in the arena tour. sheaf manages to save herself and panlo, but arachne and brandy die in the bombing. tanner is not doing well in the aftermath of brandy's death, and the alliance turns shaky. they're still allied when they go in, but when the three of them end up in a fight against coral and mizzen, sheaf gets injured in the process. panlo gets worried over her, and that hesitation is enough for coral to kill him. sheaf doesn't survive much past that.

next time, she tries even harder. maybe the solution here is to ally with coral and mizzen? there is plenty of wariness, especially since they killed her, but if they're allies, then she's safe, right? she tries to get herself and panlo in an alliance with them, but coral rebuffs them, saying that she and mizzen bring more advantage to them than they provide to her. she's not wrong, but sheaf is still put off by it. she gets to talking with brandy and tanner again, who are far more wary thinking that they're her "second choice" after seeing her talking with coral. sheaf isn't able to save brandy this time. tanner joins the pack. sheaf dies to otto again. she's seriously hating the boy from six now.

in the next loop, she confronts him over it when he makes a threatening motion to her. panlo sticks up for her, which only seems to make otto angrier. the argument doesn't go anywhere, but otto seems to kill her in the arena even quicker than that second time. it isn't until she sees the way he's glancing at panlo before glaring at her that it clicks.

she is more than a little bitter that the reason otto hated her so much was because he has a crush on panlo. seriously? if that was the case, then she was far from competition, since she had absolutely zero romantic interest in panlo. she tells him so to his face, because she might as well. maybe he wouldn't kill her over it. and if he did, then she'd just wake up back at the train again. otto denies it all, but it doesn't take much to see that he's lying. panlo is more than a little put off by it, but he's still up to ally with sheaf.

she manages to make it a little further in the arena this time. otto avoids her and panlo this time, but their mentors aren't sending food because they're playing safe. sheaf is annoyed, but she isn't like coral and mizzen. she thinks she can kill if it comes down to that, but she doesn't have the same physical strength that panlo does. making enemies by attacking people first is a sure way to die if they fail to finish them off. it's a slow path to starving, and the snakes that come are almost a mercy.

sheaf wakes up in the train and decides that those rainbow snakes are a terrifying way to die. she tries over and over and over again in dozens of different ways, getting further and further into the games with each iteration of events that she finds working. it's one selfish path that sees her as the victor- not saving brandy, hiding with panlo, taking out anyone sneakily in the tunnels if they cross their paths, and being ready to climb and avoid the snakes. lucy gray sings, and the snakes do not attack her. she's done this once before, but now she knows of the snake that lucy gray is hiding up her sleeve and acts quicker. that's it. there's blood on sheaf's hands, of so many lives that it had taken to get to this point, but the games are over.

she's won. she's finally won, and she can go home.

except, she is declared victor, and wakes up back on the train still. sheaf has a bit of a breakdown at that. so many tries, so many repetitions, she's finally been able to win, and that wasn't it? why was she repeating all this if not to get home? and she thinks she understands. it's the same reason that she was not surprised to hear her name. d9 did not want an orphan like her to come back. they wanted someone useful, someone like panlo. all these loops were to get panlo home, she thinks, and she starts again with that new goal.

except- that isn't it either. sheaf takes a dozen tries and a dozen more to get the right set of events for them to survive through it all. then it's down to only the two of them. sheaf and panlo. panlo does not want to die, but he does not want to kill her either. it's fine. sheaf has died plenty, and she knows all the ways to die first. he'll be the victor. he'll get to go home. sheaf will make sure of it. and she takes herself out of the games. sheaf dies, and she wakes again.

sheaf freaks out even harder than she had when she realized that her being victor wasn't the solution. if her winning wasn't the end, and panlo winning wasn't the end, then what was it? and as she's dumped in the capitol zoo, as she goes through the motions all over again, she comes to her realization. sheaf keeps brandy from killing arachne, and she thinks you deserve to go home. sheaf diffuses the one-sided beef with otto and thinks you deserve to go home. sheaf does her best to get them all through the arena bombing, and that thought rights through her mind with each tribute. you deserve to go home, i deserve to go home, we all deserve to go home.

so she starts off with a new plan. get them all out of hunger games. that loop is a bit of a loss, but she wakes up again and immediately talks with the other tributes in the cattle car she's in. (i'm going with d3 in this case) sheaf lays everything out about the time travel and loops. obviously, they're super skeptical, but she's been through this a lot and had gathered a bit of information about circ and teslee. it's not much, but it's definitely more than a girl from a different district should know about them if they truly "just met". and that's enough to create a tentative alliance.

by the time they reach the zoo, they've brainstormed a few ideas, and try to get the other tributes roped in on it. no one wants to die in the arena, but a risky plan where the capitol might to worse to them and their families if caught? it's a hard sell. no one is going to snitch, but not many are willing to join up. at this point, sheaf knows her mentor is useless (at least in regards to wanting to help her), but there's three that she knows always comes around: lucy gray's mentor, marcus's mentor, and brandy's mentor.

arachne is obviously not an option because she has zero sympathy for their situation. just because she consistently appears doesn't mean that sheaf has any interest in trying to appeal to such an unpleasant person. she's been put off by coriolanus from the amount of times that she's seen him act when hopping aboard the tribute truck (she's pretty sure he's only out to help lucy gray, and would see her dead to support "his" tribute).

so that leaves sejanus, and she knows he'll be around with the sandwiches soon. however, sheaf knows she can't talk to him for long without making it suspicious, so they have to get marcus on board the plan. this turns out to be much more difficult than planned because marcus has some personal beef with sejanus, which is where they learn that sejanus is actually from d2.

downside is that marcus is still resistant to talking to sejanus. upside is that the other tributes learning that sejanus is district gets them on board- there's hope there.

if he's not actually capitol, then he might actually be willing to help an escape plan, right? (ik this is supposed to be sheaf-centric but my brain inserts sejanus into everything) with the power of peer pressure (aka mizzen's puppy eyes), marcus reluctantly agrees to talk to sejanus. he's very on board an escape plan and tries to help them as best as he can. the only issue is that it's a very clunky plan & it crashes and burns hard.

sheaf wakes up back on the train with dampened spirits. she isn't completely ready to give up just yet though, so the next couple of loops are information gathering loops. she needs everyone on board, which means she needs a quick way for everyone to trust her for the "ideal" loop. once she gets enough knowledge, she tries over from the start, getting everyone caught up with the "i'm a time traveller & here's info i couldn't have known unless you told me" bit, and they're off with another try to get the heck out of the hunger games. they ultimately decide that they can't escape all at once.

the plan ends up being a mix of everything. it's shouting at arachne and laying into her about her behavior, which veers into the behavior of other visitors in the crowd who also thought taunting them with food was "funny". most storm off in anger, but some who were only spectating are uncomfortable (it's not much yet, but it builds). it's talking with sejanus and getting him to bring supplies that circ and teslee can use to hack the cameras. it's getting close with more sympathetic mentors for more food (in the absence of the visitors that they shouted away) to get them supplied for their escape, and invested enough in them to turn a blind eye when they're taken in for those questionnaires and more than a few of them slip away.

it's the panic of some tributes managing to get away leading to more mistakes happening. it's treech slipping away with the keys to the enclosure. it's reaper, marcus, and panlo wearing peacekeeper uniforms to give the illusion that the cage is still guarded (in uniform, no one can really tell the difference if they're not paying close enough attention). it's sejanus getting the tools for circ and teslee that "coincidentally" see the cameras at the zoo conveniently broken. it's sheaf working extra hard to get friendly with androcles that keeps the news from slandering them as badly as it might have otherwise. and it's one night where all these factors collide where the enclosure turns out completely empty, with no guards, no footage as to where they went, and no signs of a breakout by force.

sheaf has lived the path of the arena and the games many, many, many times, but this is the first that they're all out. she doesn't know where to go from here, but if this escape doesn't work- well. she's got plenty more chances to make sure that she gets it right the next time (or the next, or the next). she's quite done trying to win the capitol's games. sheaf plans to break the entire game apart.

i like to think that they escape from there! there's a lot of different ideas that could happen- like maybe after the loop where she ensures that panlo wins, he joins the loop with her. (aka victors join the time loop) or maybe the loop is iterative. every time she does something right, she wakes up at a new later point, rather than back at the train every time. like after gaining the other tributes' trust, the next time she dies, she wakes up already at the enclosure post-get-thier-trust (basically there's "checkpoints" for each correct action).

in any case, sheaf gets all the tributes working together & out of the capitol. gaul's lab mysteriously gets destroyed. the mentors who were quite attached to their tributes have no clue how that could have happened. highbottom doesn't care enough to continue the games, and stopping them is easy when their popularity had been dropping & there is no head gamemaker pushing for its continuation.

this got pretty long, but it was fun to think about! feel free to send any more thoughts- and thanks for sending this ask bel!! :D

more time travelling persephone, but this time it's less depressing!

fix-it version:

the tenth hunger games have concluded with lucy gray as the victor. mizzen is dead. mizzen is dead, and it's properly hitting her that he was just a boy. alive, he had been her tribute, one that she was invested on winning. dead, he's thirteen years old, looking small on the screen broadcasting the arena. festus is a comfort, but he can't quite soothe the guilt of it. she should have tried harder, cared earlier, done more-

she goes to bed thinking of the could have, would have, should haves...and wakes up at the start of her senior year. the tenth hunger games are nearly a year away. arachne and apollo and diana and gaius are alive. mizzen is alive. things are different; but they are exactly as they were before. festus isn't her friend. they hadn't been very close until the mentorship. she's going to change that, though.

and it strikes her: she can change that. persephone can change things. she can change everything.

and she does! she befriends festus, properly. he's a bit confused why she's suddenly gotten closer to her, but he doesn't mind having her around, enjoys it even. she starts to gauge her classmates' opinions on the hunger games. it's depressing that apathy is about the best reaction, most think the hunger games are a deserved punishment, and she can't really blame them for thinking like that. they haven't mentored a child. they haven't watched that child die. they haven't watched people cheer that child's death.

she does find allies, though. sejanus is happy to have a new friend. he meshes into her new circle better than she expected. festus had already been generally friendly/civil with sejanus, so he adapts to the second new presence suddenly close to him fairly quickly. persephone gets upset at anyone criticizes her for spending time with sejanus. festus gets angry when persephone gets upset.

people quickly learn to get used to the new normal. (it may take festus punching a few people to get to that point, but people learn. the lesson sticks like a fist in their face.)

slowly but surely, persephone tests the waters. how much can she say while people still agree? ("it feels odd that all the tributes this year will be our age or younger, doesn't it?") how much can she say before people begin to change their minds? ("nine seems like more than enough, why are we even bothering with a tenth?")

the games were already waning in popularity, and it turns out its death knell isn't the districts shouting about its injustice, but the apathy of the capitol citizens that were meant to be watching it. the games are bloody, and quick. is it really worth the tax dollars to maintain that arena? to transport the tributes? to set up a stream to broadcast a show that less and less watch with every year?

can't that money go to something else? infrastructure, maybe? it's been a decade since the end of the war, but there's still plenty of things that could use funding. why is so much money getting put into the war department anyway? why is so much money going into the development of mutts when the war is over? the war is over, and wouldn't it be nice to celebrate the end of the war with festivities rather than be reminded of the damage done?

sure, the games are a punishment for the districts, but they are also a reminder of what the capitol has lost. and persephone is quite done remembering what has been lost. better to focus on what can be saved. look to the future, not the past, as it were.

there is no announcement. nothing official. but july comes and goes, and twenty-four district children are never brought to the capitol. the plinth prize is awarded to the top student, and they graduate. she and festus start dating in university. persephone doesn't forget about the boy she once mentored, but she does live on.

she gets her degree, gets married, and the country starts to loosen up. she and her classmates are the future of panem, and their vision of the future has changed that senior year. it's funny, how peaceful people are when you're not sending their children to die. peacekeepers lessen- there's less need to be so authoritative. travel restrictions open up- a vacation in the districts is something more and more are open to.

she and festus honeymoon at a house by the sea, and on a walk along the beach, she sees a boy whose not really a boy anymore. he's grown up, he's had the chance to grow up - he's smiling, he's happy, he's alive.

and that boy might not know who she is, but persephone thinks that she likes the way things have concluded.

ah omg i am so excited about this!! quite literally have been waiting all day just so i can really think about it.

immediately the first paragraph hit me like a ton of bricks. reading all of this nearly made me cry it makes me so happy.

persephone realizing that she can make a change and doing it by being somewhere subtle and smart about it. and the way festus is happy to go along with it and befriend sej too.

and the part about her bringing up the tax dollars- that’s such a smart argument. nothing convinced people quite like their bank accounts.

i love the idea that despite things working out- she never really forgot about mizzen.

and while persephone may have been pleased with him not knowing who she is- i can’t help but imagine a scenario where they meet at least once.

obviously, mizzen would never know who she is or what would have happened to him without her- but a nice, quick interaction.

perhaps they have a small conversation where persephone asks him about starfish- and he’s delighted to talk about it. how did this capitol girl know about his favorite creature? it doesn’t matter, he’s happy to explain what he knows.

or- because i simply can’t resist really indulging in the joy of it all- the idea that things get good enough to where the people of the districts can get a proper education. maybe mizzen gets to become the marine biologist that he was meant to be. or maybe persephone doesn’t meet him in district 4, but at the aquarium in the capitol where mizzen works. perhaps she and festus take their own children there one day and run into an adult mizzen who patiently explains to persephone’s now thirteen-year-old son about marine life.

and persephone briefly thinks about a world where she didn’t change things and how she would have never been able to go inside this beautiful aquarium without being crushed by the loss of an innocent little boy.

she thanks mizzen for being so patient and hugs her son a little tighter that night.
