(i loved the moments at the end when he was just ben and adam played it so differently than he had up til then and yes. good. like that moment when he’s fighting the knights of ren?? and the awkward little shrug he does before kicking their asses??? it was the first moment in the trilogy i thought ‘oh yep that’s han solo’s kid.’ and he actually got to smile an honest to god smile?? he was a flawed, fucked up character who, imo, was one of the most original choices the whole trilogy made. to have an antagonist like that. 

speaking of han solo. the WAILING noise i made....

i thought what they did with leia was as good as it reasonably could have been. and yes i wept like a tiny child. and the fact that she and billie lourd got a moment was lovely (and billie basically wearing leia’s endor outfit in the final battle made my heart grow about 14 sizes)

trio banter! i was never that committed to the idea that they needed to be together because i don’t think even the first film really set them up as a trio the way the OT set up theirs, but... the chemistry was good! they had jokes! poe doesn’t like bones! who knew?

WEDGE. ANTILLES. that was one i genuinely was not expecting and i sat bolt upright in my seat. (i know that ‘resistance reborn’ has something to do with this but i haven’t finished reading that yet so.... oops?)

the luke/leia flashback was a bit uncanny valley (especially on leia) but it was nice to see

ummmmmm..... i’m starting to run out of things i liked because there was so much that was just.... meh. a lot of nice moments in a big old pile of bland, unseasoned oatmeal mush.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE:

welp. the rest of it? I MEAN. there were so many good ideas or good moments or good characters that then.... got brushed past so quickly we hardly got a chance to get to know them!

this movie had about 87 macguffins. honest to god it felt like watching someone play a videogame where in order to complete one quest, they have to do about 12 mini quests to collect random items. the locations were all gorgeous! but they felt! pointless!!!!

Fucking. Palpatine. I’m not necessarily against the idea of palpatine being back. but they didn’t??? establish it????? ever?????? not even in TFA???? i mean, tfa had about as little world building as was humanly possible to include so maybe that’s not a surprise....

i’m so angry about the rey reveal. regardless of one’s feelings about some of the choices in tlj, the idea that rey wasn’t from some special bloodline was so good. she was just her own person. she was strong with the force and what made her special was what she chose to do with it. not because she had some legacy in her dna that she had to fulfill or defy or whatever. she was an ordinary person who could do extraordinary things. but nope! she’s palpatine’s granddaughter apparently! because if you’re gonna pander to fan theories, why not just choose the stupidest one???? the audience in my showing audibly groaned. 

and of course there’s no explanation about WHY he was back. or how. he just was. zooming around on his big ass space cherry-picker. 

i liked zori (sp?)! but like jahnna (sp???) we barely got to know her. her existence in the movie was so fleeting it was like the studio went ‘well let’s have poe flirt with his ex who looks like a member of daft punk so the sjws will stop asking for finnpoe!’ again. she was fun. i liked her. i even think she and oscar isaac had chemistry (though OI could have chemistry with a brick wall). i just wish there had been a POINT to her. honestly she’s a character i might totally take up as a muse....

SPEAKING OF POE. so.... he has a sketchy criminal background now? ugh. he had sketchy background just so they had an excuse to go to sketchy planet, not because it was particularly enlightening to his character.

i know star wars dialogue has ALWAYS been clunky, but this felt especially clunky??

finn yet again had nothing to do. jj tried to retcon the wrong aspects of tlj. what he should have fixed was finn’s storyline. what he did was ruin rey’s. and rose tico’s. fuck you jj for sidelining her. and like???? the idea of finding a whole bunch of fellow first order defectors??? WAS SO GREAT AND THEY DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WITH IT. GGAAHHHHHH.

anyway, i could keep nitpicking, but honestly one of my biggest problems was that it just.... had no stakes. i mean, technically there was a lot at stake, but the movie rushed through it so quickly that even some of the genuinely nice character beats felt hurried and there wasn’t time given to just feel them. the big tension didn’t feel like the culmination of anything except this single movie. like yes this film was more like tfa than tlj, but it didn’t even do justice to that movie! the beats of this film all were so much like rotj, there was no suspense. there were no sacrifices beyond what you could see coming 1000 miles away. it just felt like an inevitable avalanche of meh thundering to its conclusion. i hate to say this bc he’s my fave of the ST, but poe maybe should have been shot down in that last battle???? so at least the big climax felt.... serious? bc the only sacrifice was a character from the comics that only a fraction of the audience will care about. 

speaking of that..... I WILL NEVER FORGIVE JJ FOR KILLING SNAP WEXLEY FUCK YOOUUUUUUUUUUU SIR.

anyway. my sour feelings were summed up by the last line of the movie. i so desperately wanted rey to answer the question ‘rey who?’ with something like “rey. it’s just rey.” like she’s done a thousand times before, but this time, saying it with contentment and acceptance. instead we got “rey skywalker.” i wanted to see a young woman who, having learned about her past and freed herself from it, chose to just be herself. no other legacies, no other baggage. she was just rey. being who she was, choosing her own path for herself. but instead she’s hitched to a different legacy that’s not even really hers. i get what they were going for with the jedi legacy and luke and all that and i’m sure some people will love it. but it was such a disappointment to me.

this trilogy - which has things i do genuinely love! - just felt like an ill-planned exercise in corporate greed that didn’t actually have a vision for what it wanted to be. it didn’t want to be anything but a rehash of movies we’ve all watched already. i feel like bobo the fool for expecting (hoping) for something more but. welp.

A little bit of Star Wars fic. I started this massive wip back in the day but never finished it because (a) the expanded universe got de-canoned and (b) I have no work ethic. I figured this little snippet works fine as a one shot so I figured I’d post it.  One of the things I was thinking about while writing this was how the Alderaan royal family is always portrayed as perfect, wonderful, happy squeaky clean and never had any problems. I wanted to do a little more realistic take on what it would really be like to grow up in a family where the kids are groomed for greatness from a very young age, who grow up in the public eye, are expected to go into politics and naturally excel at it. I just don’t see  everyone coming through that psychologically unscathed. So we see a young Bail here, who didn’t initially want to go into politics, trying to play Papa Organa at his own game. 

Legends timeline,  so Bail is an Organa, Breha is an Antilles and the families are political rivals. Much of this won’t be canon anymore and even then, I liberally cherry pick the Legends timeline because a lot of it is really bizarre.

Dinner is served in the Aldera Palace, as always, at precisely six-thirty pm. The meal is delicious and delicately presented, the wines painstakingly matched with it. The room is softly, artfully lit by the crystal chandelier (a gift from some royal House or other). Mother sits at one end of the table, barely touching her food. Celly and Rouge giggle and whisper about potential suitors, but Tia isn't interested in that. She's listening to Bail and Father politely savage each other over the fish course. It's a typical Organa family dinner.

“Now? You thought now was a good time to say this?” Father is incredulous. 

Bail is relaxed, or at least he seems it. He slouches back in his chair, one hand resting on the table with his fingers curling lightly around the stem of his wine glass.

“Seemed as good a time as any,” Bail replies calmly. That's a lie, Tia is sure of it. You don't drop a bombshell like, “I'm leaving for Coruscant to work in the senate,” at any old time. Just as the servants are clearing the entrees, that's the perfect inopportune moment; Father won't shout in front of the servants, so it gives Bail a precious few seconds for the idea to sink in before Father has a chance to explain why it's impossible, just impossible.

Father makes no attempt at nonchalance, he grips his fish knife like it's an offensive weapon. “You have duties here! Or did you forget, you're next in line to be Viceroy? What, am I to retain the title into my dotage?”

“Of course not, Father,” Bail replies, so reasonable, so logical. “Step aside any time you like, that's what Regents are for.”

“A Regent?” Father snorts. “Who?”

Bail picks up his wine glass and points the base of it towards his sister. “Tia could do it.”

Tia’s lips twitch and she sits up straighter in her chair but Father immediately bursts her burgeoning pride with two, incredulous syllables.

“Tia?”

Bail quaffs what's left in his glass and shoots his sister an apologetic look. She can't tell if he's apologising on Father's behalf or his own, for bringing her into this. She smiles back sheepishly. She doesn't mind, not really. She's seen far worse collateral damage during past arguments.

Celly and Rouge have since ceased their chatter and joined Tia in watching the show.

“Are you really leaving, Bail?” Asks Rouge.

“No, darling, he isn't,” Father interrupts. “He's just being childish. Acting out. Again.”

“Is trying to fulfill one's potential childish?” Bail counters. “I've been studying and training for years; Interplanetary Relations, politics, languages, diplomacy…” He leans forward and clasps his hands, going for the kill, “...At your insistence, Father. You wouldn't want to see all that education go to waste, would you?”

“You were training to become Viceroy, not some lowly researcher in a Republica office. For you, these are accomplishments, not trades.” Tia is surprised Father is able to talk about his eldest working for a living without holding his nose.

“Isn't…” Celly glances nervously at Mother. “ Isn't Coruscant very dangerous? You hear so many stories about the Capital.”

“Oh yes,” says Bail, nodding seriously. “It's full of criminals, gangsters, bounty hunters and,” he pauses and mock shudders, “Civil servants.”  Celly giggles into her napkin. She doesn't want Father to think she isn't taking this seriously but she's always been helpless in the face of Bail's deadpan humour.

With Celly vanquished, Rouge steps into the fray. “Will you be working under Senator Antilles?” Tia almost guffaws. Rouge thinks she's being clever by baiting Father with talk of Antilles but Bail could probably kiss her for bringing him up. She doesn't understand that working with their family’s main rival for the Viceroyship is no doubt part of the appeal for their brother. Father always saw the senate position as the consolation prize so the idea of his son pursuing it by choice is as perverse as it infuriating.

“He thinks I could do well in the senate,” Bail answers. His tone is measured but Tia fancies he's doing everything he can not to grin like an idiot. “Chancellor Valorum, too. I can certainly achieve far more there than I can here.”

The thought of his eldest working under an Antilles has the desired effect: Father looks sick. “Mazicia,” he entreats Mother to end this lunacy, surely Bail will listen to her. “You cannot think this is wise.”

“He's a grown man, Prestor,” Mother sounds tired. She always sounds tired these days. “What can we do, lock him in a tower?”

Bail glares at Father, the mask of civility has slipped: his eyes are narrowed, his jaw clamped shut. He's daring him to disagree with Mother. If he does, it will be all-out war. You don't drag Mother into these things, you don't ask her to mediate, she has enough to worry about. You just don't do it. It's against the rules of engagement. The three girls have all fallen silent. This isn't funny anymore.

There's an agonising wait as Father weighs his options. He can acquiesce and lose face or carry on arguing and ruin dessert (and possibly all future dinners to come). The silence is eventually broken as Father's cutlery clinks on his plate. “Fine,” he mutters, attacking his food, “Go then. You'll be bored within a week.” Civility resumes.

Bail’s gaze meets Tia’s, that silent communication they've been perfecting ever since they were children. She can guess what he's thinking. Can you believe it, Tia? I won. I actually won. For the first time in our lives, he backed down! It's true, Father walked right into this. Bail won't get bored, he never gets bored. He succeeds at whatever he applies himself to and he always applies himself. Father should have known his shining, brilliant son would take his political training as far as he could.

Tia wonders if Bail realises how much she'll miss him. He's not just a brother, he's her advisor, her confidante, her ally in this minefield of protocol and etiquette that is their family. It’s a stunning victory for him though, so she won't begrudge him it. He's getting out and she's happy for him. So for now, she just sits in quiet awe of her big brother. Only Bail could spite their father by choosing to excel in a field he was forced into. Tia can only dream of being so elegantly vindictive.

  Team Saint Lucia Shines as 3×3 strengthens Unity throughout the Region

  Saint Lucia’s Male and Female National 3×3 team returned home from a successful team and nation building Antilles 3×3 Hoops Finals in Guadeloupe. 

A total of 68 players from 10 countries of the region participated in the three (3) day event which apart from the 3×3 Mixed Nations Basketball Tournament, also featured a Youth Leadership and Life Skills workshop. 

Female Team Captain Mia George, during her presentation, encouraged the idea of organizing more 3×3 Basketball games during recess periods at school as a practical method to raise the awareness of the sport to not only attract the male students but also encourage the females who are interested in 3×3 Basketball.  

Said Mia during the Youth Leadership Workshop, “We don’t have enough female players but if we can introduce them to the game during school, show them that it’s fun and easy to play, we may start to head towards gender equality in basketball players”.

Our players were able to add to their skill sets, leadership abilities that would be advantageous to them on and off the court. 

Games were played on Saturday and Sunday and with the mixed nation’s format players from 9 of the 10 countries present were able to play in the finals.

Saint Lucia’s Romia Joseph together with Breanna Charles from Trinidad and Tobago, Raymi Coueta from Martinique and Rhea Richards from Antigua and Barbuda won the Antilles 3×3 Female Finals. Mia George’s team MSNK Tabs placed third overall in the competition. 

Despite our boys not featuring in the winner’s circle, Cheic Alphonse’s squad placed second and Cletuson Leon and the Underrated Kings run ended in the semi-finals.  

Co-organizer and President of the ‘Ligue Régional de Guadeloupe de Basketball’ Patrice Alexis, insisted that the gathering was able to build a fraternity and a tolerance within the youths of the Caribbean, “although we are from different territories, we all dream of the same sport”.

Team Saint Lucia consisted of Renair Yarde, Cletuson Leon, Keon Allen and Cheic Alphonse (Males), Mia George, Andaizia Cherry, Sybille Eugene and Romia Joseph(Females).

What do iguanas eat?

The first important concept you should be clear about before moving on to the iguana food lists is the correct ratio of calcium to phosphorus (Ca and P). Ideally, vegetables containing twice as much calcium as phosphorus should be used (Ca:P ratio of 2:1), although a ratio of up to 1:1 (same amount of each mineral) is acceptable.

This ratio is very important for bone growth and maintenance, as well as for muscle contraction and many other body functions. The most frequent consequence of a poor diet is the onset of metabolic bone disease, which can be fatal if not corrected in time. The food eaten by iguanas creates a generally calcium-deficient diet, as very few vegetables maintain the ideal 2:1 ratio. When selecting diet ingredients, use vegetables that contain at least 1:1. We'll give you a list of vegetables ranked from highest to lowest for their calcium content, but they should always be combined with others that contain less to avoid excesses.

Vegetables that eat iguanas and their calcium-phosphorus ratio

Between 8:1 and 4:1 - Galician cabbage, mustard, papaya, turnip greens, cilantro.

Between 4:1 and 2:1 - parsley, amaranth, dandelion leaves, Chinese cabbage, beet leaves, lettuce, kale, Scotch kale, figs, Valencia orange, artichoke leaves, green cabbage, watercress.

Between 2:1 and 1:1 - onions, chicory, lime, raspberry, medlar, mustard greens, chard, leek, lemon, grapefruit, blueberry, tangerines, loose skin grapes, celery, tofu (okara), green beans, red cabbage, turnip, pink grapefruit, eggplant, garlic, radish, Antilles cherry (acerola), raw tofu, pear, blackberry, apple with skin, chives, persimmon, pineapple.

On the other hand, you must also take into account the protein content of the vegetables eaten by iguanas. The group that contains the most is the legumes, so always include some in the diet.

Dangerous foods for iguanas

Oxalic plants are plants that contain

oxalic acid

, which combines with calcium and does not allow the body to absorb it. The vegetables in this group are: spinach, rhubarb (considered toxic and should be avoided), beet, beet leaves, celery stick and chard. As you will see, these contain a lot of calcium, but it is useless when combined with oxalic acid, so try not to use them or use them only in small amounts.

Other vegetables that eat iguanas but should not be overused are cabbages in general, as they can cause thyroid problems. These include cabbage, kale, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, turnip, kale, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. You don't have to avoid them, just limit the amount or give them occasionally.

Finally, another group of vegetables that should not be given in excess is those containing tannin. This pigment binds to enzyme proteins preventing digestion and also disables iron and vitamin B12. If too much is given, it can damage the liver. Vegetables that eat iguanas that contain a lot of tannin are spinach, carrots, bananas, grapes, lettuce, rhubarb (toxic to iguanas, should be avoided completely) and onions.

The best vegetables for iguanas

Good vegetables for iguanas

, which have no contraindications and are nutritious are: cabbage leaves (Galician cabbage), turnip greens, mustard greens, parsley, dandelion leaves, rapini, green beans, figs (fresh or dried), green peppers, escarole, raspberries, leek, peas, blackberry, grapes, radish, okra, pears, tunas (cactus fruit) and parsnip.

Now, it is important to remember that you must offer a variety of at least 10 different ingredients, it is not enough that you take two or three of this group and feed it to your iguana. You can use other vegetables with good nutritional value that are not on this list, but avoid those mentioned as dangerous. You can take those on the list as basic choices for your diet, but include others taking into account their nutritional value, their price, the tastes of your iguana and the availability in the area where you live.

What do young iguanas eat?

For a long time it was recommended that a diet richer in protein be given to growing iguanas, such as dog or cat food. It is now known that both adults and young women are strictly vegetarian and their diet is the same. It is convenient to give them a supplement of vitamins and calcium.

Commercial fodder for iguanas

These diets are very recent and have not yet been tested enough to know if they are good. Some iguanas fed exclusively on these diets have developed dietary deficiencies within a year. There is not yet a table with the nutritional requirements of iguanas, therefore no manufacturer can say that it meets these needs. Combining the fodder eaten by iguanas with a good variety of vegetables is the safest for a complete and balanced diet. You can also use the feed for travel, when you have no other provisions or when someone else is in charge of your iguana.

There are iguanas who love junk food and will be delighted if they can be made with a slice of pizza or some ice cream. If they do it only occasionally, it won't hurt them at all. It's like when kids eat candy, which has no nutritional value but is tasty and makes them feel good. Just as you would with your children, don't let this type of food be a big part of the food iguanas eat in their diet.

Vitamin and Calcium Supplements

Despite the efforts you make to balance an iguana's diet, it is always advisable to sprinkle some of these supplements on its ration to avoid deficiencies. In young iguanas you can use only a little one day a week and in adults twice a week, but don't overdo it. You can use a human multivitamin and grind the tablets.

For calcium look for a formula that contains only calcium and vitamin D3, without phosphorus. Remember that most vegetables that iguanas eat have more phosphorus than calcium and you have to try to counteract this imbalance. To find out how much to give, try estimating how much calcium is in the diet you are preparing by using the list of calcium content in vegetables as a guide. If you're using those with 2:1 or more, you won't need to supplement, but if you're using the poorest in calcium, then add supplement or change the formulation.

Finally, you should know that iguanas tend to eat more in the summer and gradually lose their appetite towards winter. Also, autumn is their breeding season and they can stop eating because of it.

How much do iguanas eat?

The amount of food to supply depends on the size of the iguana. You just have to give them the amount they can eat, as they do not overfeed. After studying it for a few days, any owner will be able to know what the appropriate measure is. Once you have finished eating, you should remove the remaining food to avoid spoilage and keep the cage clean. In addition, this is how you get used to eating at a certain time.

The best time to feed the iguanas is in the morning, half an hour to an hour after you wake up. In this way they have all day with higher temperatures to digest what they have eaten. You can eat again during the day if you want, but the bulk should be given in the morning. I recommend that you always feed it at the same time so that it defecates regularly. This is useful if you want to teach him how to use a tray or to clean up right away and do not leave the feces in the cage for a long time.

What should the iguana food container look like?

The plate can be made of ceramic, plastic or glass, it should be flat and large because iguanas like to climb up to dig into food. Any material you choose should be well washable and if it is weighed better, so that it cannot be overturned. It is a good idea to place the dish on a high part of the cage so that it does not accidentally swallow substrate or the food comes in contact with the fecal matter.

As for water dishes, it is best to have more than one. Usually a large one is placed at the bottom of the cage to immerse them, and they will almost always use it to defecate. That is why it is convenient to put a smaller one, so that you cannot enter it, in some high place, in case you want to drink. Water dishes also serve to keep the environment humid, as the liquid evaporates due to the high temperatures of the enclosure.

Finally, you must remember that an important part of a good iguana's diet is an adequate source of UV radiation. Thanks to ultraviolet rays, the body can form enough vitamin D3 to absorb calcium from food. The best source of this radiation is unfiltered sunlight, so it is good to have a cage outside so that the iguana gets at least an hour of sunshine every day. If you can't, use good quality tubes as an artificial source.
