The Philosophy of Punk
The philosophy of punk is a distinctive blend of cultural rebellion, DIY ethos, and anti-establishment attitudes. Emerging from the punk rock music scene in the 1970s, punk philosophy has since evolved into a broader subcultural movement that encompasses music, fashion, art, and social commentary. Here's an exploration of the core tenets and influences of punk philosophy:
1. DIY Ethic
At the heart of punk philosophy is the "Do It Yourself" (DIY) ethic. Punk advocates self-sufficiency and creativity without reliance on mainstream institutions or commercial interests. This ethos encourages individuals to create their own music, art, and fashion, often using limited resources. It fosters a sense of empowerment and community, as punks produce and distribute their own records, zines, and merchandise.
2. Anti-Establishment and Rebellion
Punk philosophy is deeply rooted in anti-establishment sentiments. It rejects conventional norms, authority, and societal expectations. Punk often criticizes political systems, corporate greed, and social inequalities. This rebellious stance is reflected in the raw and confrontational style of punk music and the provocative nature of punk fashion, which frequently includes ripped clothing, bold hairstyles, and symbolic accessories like safety pins and leather jackets.
3. Individualism and Authenticity
Punk values individualism and authenticity, championing the idea of being true to oneself. It opposes conformity and encourages people to express their unique identities and beliefs. This focus on personal authenticity often translates into a rejection of polished, commercialized aesthetics in favor of raw, unfiltered expression.
4. Anarchy and Libertarianism
Many punk subcultures are influenced by anarchist and libertarian ideologies. Punk philosophy often promotes the idea of a society without hierarchical structures or authoritarian control. Anarcho-punk, a subgenre of punk, explicitly incorporates anarchist principles, advocating for direct action, mutual aid, and community-based alternatives to state power.
5. Social and Political Activism
Punk philosophy is not only about music and fashion but also about activism and social change. Punk bands and communities frequently address issues such as anti-racism, gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmentalism. Punk's activist spirit is evident in its support for grassroots movements, protests, and various forms of direct action.
6. Cultural Innovation and Subversion
Punk is known for its cultural innovation and subversion. It challenges mainstream cultural standards and pushes the boundaries of artistic expression. Punk art, music, and literature often employ satire, irony, and shock value to critique societal norms and provoke thought.
The philosophy of punk is a multifaceted and dynamic ideology that encompasses a wide range of attitudes and practices. At its core, punk is about rejecting conformity, embracing individuality, and striving for authenticity. It promotes a DIY ethic, challenges authority, and seeks to create a more just and equitable society through activism and direct action. Punk's enduring influence can be seen in various cultural and social movements, making it a vital and vibrant part of contemporary philosophy and culture.

It's worth mentioning that 7-Up's tagline was "The Un-Cola" since the 60's.
"In the company newsletter, the team explained "Seven-Up tells people that, of the 3 top selling soft drink brands, 7-Up. the uncola, is the only one with distinctly different qualities.""
I'm also not sure if it means anything, but the Hellfire table in the cafeteria has beverages other than Coke. I think Gareth has Dr. Pepper and Jeff has Tab (lol). Maybe also a nod to their "different"-ness?
Okay listen. LISTEN.
I don’t know what is going on with these goddamn Coca-Cola references in stranger things which people have pointed out several times before (and across seasons tbh), but: can someone PLEASE tell me what the hell a drawing of a red cola machine is doing in one of WILL’S DRAWINGS Mike has in the basement?
Cause I’m watching this on my (rather large) TV screen and noticed this in the scene where Nancy wakes up Dustin when he falls asleep on “Max Watch”, and it doesn’t make a single iota of sense to be here unless it means something…but I haven’t the slightest idea what.
I’ve written it off as product placement most of the time (cue analytical laughter), but this is some next level shit to have a bright red machine in an otherwise black and white drawing Mike keeps hung up as a party memory?
Like we had the “new coke” moment for Lucas and El in S3 + the coke being in Max’s room, plus coke with food + in El’s room (and probably a million other places too)…but this is something else lmao
I’m just. This particular imagery has shown up far too many times to count independent of its association to anything else, and has even been mentioned by name at this point, so I’m really trying to sort out what it means.
wider shot reference + it’s been there since S3 minimum:

At the time, many people laughed at me.
Back in 2016, I made a bold statement: if Donald Trump didn’t win the election, I would be willing to support Tulsi Gabbard. At the time, many people laughed at me.
After all, Tulsi Gabbard was a Democrat, and her positions were often seen as quite different from Trump’s. But I saw something in her a strength of character, a willingness to challenge the status quo, and an ability to think independently.
Unlike most of the warped brainwashed left. I knew that my faith in her would eventually prove to be well placed.
Fast forward to today, and Tulsi Gabbard has come out in support of Donald Trump. It’s an unexpected twist for many, but for me, it’s a confirmation of what I believed all along. Tulsi Gabbard is someone who isn’t afraid to stand up for what she believes in, even if it means crossing traditional party lines. That’s something I’ve always admired about her.
When I first made that statement, I knew it would raise eyebrows. Tulsi Gabbard was, at that time, a rising star in the Democratic Party. She had served as a member of the House of Representatives from Hawaii and had made a name for herself by speaking out against the establishment. Her military service and foreign policy views, particularly her opposition to endless wars, set her apart from many of her Democratic colleagues.
Despite being on opposite sides of the political spectrum, I saw in Tulsi a kindred spirit. She wasn’t afraid to speak out against her own party when she believed it was wrong. She stood for what she believed in, even when it wasn’t popular. And, like Trump, she wasn’t afraid to challenge the mainstream media or the entrenched political elites.
I recognised that while we might not agree on every issue, we shared some core principles principles that were more important to me than party loyalty. Tulsi’s independent thinking, her willingness to question authority, and her commitment to serving the American people were qualities that resonated with me.
Just a little side note even though I am a British patriot to my core. I closely watch international politics. It would be foolish (putting it nicely) to assume that America doesn’t play a big part in the way we do things here in the United Kingdom and at the world at large.
Alright back to the blog. Tulsi’s journey from being a Democratic congresswoman to supporting Donald Trump is a fascinating one. Over the years, she became increasingly disillusioned with the Democratic Party, particularly with its focus on identity politics and its unwillingness to challenge the military-industrial complex. Her outspoken criticism of both the party establishment and its leaders eventually led her to leave the Democratic Party altogether.
Tulsi has always been someone who prioritises principles over politics. Whether it’s her stance on foreign policy, her commitment to free speech, or her willingness to reach across the aisle, Tulsi has consistently shown that she’s more interested in doing what’s right for the country than in towing the party line.
We need more people that prioritises principles over politics. I may be a staunch conservative but we must stand together against this onslaught of mass brainwashing and fight back as one.
Sorry I digress. AGAIN!
Ok ok back on topic. When she came out in support of Trump, I wasn’t surprised. In many ways, it felt like a natural progression for someone who has always valued independent thought and the willingness to challenge the system. Tulsi’s support for Trump isn’t about party affiliation; it’s about shared values and a common vision for the future of America.
Looking back, I’m glad I stuck to my guns when it came to supporting Tulsi Gabbard. Despite the skepticism and the criticism, I believed that she was someone who would eventually prove herself, and she has. We may not agree on everything, but that’s okay. What matters to me is that she has the courage to stand up for what she believes in, even when it’s not popular or politically expedient.
In a political landscape where so many politicians are willing to compromise their values for the sake of party loyalty or personal gain, Tulsi’s integrity and independence are refreshing. She’s not afraid to challenge the status quo, and that’s something I deeply respect.
For those who laughed at me back in 2016, I can only say this: sometimes, it’s worth believing in someone, even when others don’t see it. Tulsi Gabbard has proven herself to be a true independent thinker, and I’m proud to have supported her from the beginning. Here’s to sticking to your principles and standing by those who have the courage to do the same.

@lesbianmindflayer here are my thoughts on the 7-Up (at the bottom) if you're interested!
OKAY ya'll were wondering why I wanted to know what Coca Cola signifies in Stranger Things and this is why.
This is the shot directly before we get El, Mike and Will picking up their roller skates. We get this happy couple standing against the front of the Coca Cola machine at the (Snacks) counter.
This is then followed by the sequence of El, Will and Mike as they walk away from the roller skate counter.
Which, is it's own conversation...
You'll note the Jimmy Somerville lookalike giving Will his skates, is being low-key checked out by his coworker behind him. They're actually the most in focus bodies initially in the shot, along with the girl unaware between them at the center.
The extra to the left intrigues me. Because he's different than the three on the right. He's a lot more isolated and almost appears to be in his own world, barely acknowledging anyone around him. We don't even see him look at Mike, by the time he puts Mike's skates up to the counter, he's turned the other way already.
But lets go back to these other three bc I think they are meant to parallel certain people...
We've got two employees minding their business on the right, one girl and one boy at the counter side by side, and another boy behind them, who appears to be checking out the boy... Does this remind you of anyone...?
Also I am not laughing hysterically at Mike staring at Will discreetly for .01 seconds as he enters the frame, only to look away quickly, followed by the socks popping up in the frame behind Will at the counter, which Mike forgot/didn't notice bc he was ummm busy and ends up having to go back and get right after this.
THERE! You see that couple again? The same couple they placed right in front of the Coca Cola sign in the shot right before this scene? It's interesting how this girl appears to be pointing at Will in this shot with the closet behind him, while the dialogue is about him and one of the few times that Mike is looking in their direction...
What is going on? Why does there appear to be two women who look identical in the frame right now (curly dirty blonde hair and big glasses)? One appears to have her boyfriend's arm (Coca Cola couple) wrapped around her as they go to put their skates on, directly behind Will, and one is behind Mike with what appears to be another girl chatting?
The thing about this shot and other shots like it (from Rink-O-Mania specifically), is that having a plan for these scenes actually makes it easier for everyone involved. If there are a handful of extras entering the frame alongside our main characters, then chances are they were given a specific direction for what to do in the shot. It's easier for the extra who only has like 2 seconds on screen anyways, to actually be told what to do in those 2 seconds, which in turn makes it easier for the people editing, and so on and so forth.
Regardless of the logistics, this sequence is very likely to have meaning simply because most scenes in Stranger Things hold meaning beyond what is outright told. More often than not, they want to convey a hidden message, and they can do that by hinting at it in the frame.
And so... what is this telling us?
