Out of curiosity, why do you dislike Midnight Mass? It's really like hear your opinions.
it's just so fucking BORING!! the concept is interesting i do find the concept interesting (vampire priest who believes his vampirism is a gift from god) but somehow it was done in the least interesting way possible. sometimes there's like a minute where i thought "holy shit is it finally gonna get better" and then i watched the next episode and it continued to be exactly the same.
all the characters are basically exactly the same. i know it's by monologue flanagan but can they at least monologue in DIFFERENT ways??? dear god. he edited it himself and you can REALLY tell. the fucking ten minute scene that's just "what do you think happens after we die? vcnvncmrnwbvnjef vdmnnc cmnennwneetnewnnwbefnbrtnbemrbermnbmrbtrtbwnrebeb" is crazy who thought that was a good idea. god every character was so forgettable i think i remember like 4 names. genuinely i see people talking about a character and i have to look them up and i STILL don't remember them. don't get me started on the fucking therapy speak. also riley flynn is the most boring protagonist i've ever seen i can't think of a single personality trait he has. i can barely think of ANY personality traits ANY characters have.
i know we shit on his adaptations a lot (as we should) and at the very fucking least he didn't ruin another excellent work of horror with midnight mass but he is NOT a good writer with his own stuff either!! it's so BLAND. even when it's not boring it's bland and uninteresting. i know i'm biased i know i watch extreme horror to find artistic value in underlooked pieces of media so i'm used to "that freak shit" but he did nothing!!! he did nothing with his vampire priest! he was literally irrelevant by the end because he gave that antagonist role to some other character and he was never really the protagonist either. he was just there for a really dumb late-game romance plot/plot twist.
it's such an unbearable show and the ending isn't even good!!! its tone is so fucking weird like everyone dies and yet there's still a weirdly hopeful tone to it. i feel like that's a moment to REALLY lean into the tragedy. it doesn't have a happy ending but it also doesn't let you feel sad enough for it to be truly tragic.
also there's like three different types of vampire in the show and it makes NO sense why they're so different from each other. i'm not asking for extensive lore i'm just asking for consistency.
it's like 8 hours long and i know i've probably spent way more than that complaining about this fucking show but still a waste of my time. it just sucks so much. it could have been an okay movie but as a whole show it's so dragged out and doesn't DO anything with those eight hours. i don't mind a slow burn i really don't but a) the build up has to be worth something and b) it has to have something really really good at the end of the build up.
honestly it looks SO good in gifs and screenshots and fanart that it makes me wish the show was better because you could have a much better experience just looking at those and imagining a good show than actually watching it.
on the plus side if you DO watch the actual show riley's death scene is the funniest shit in the whole thing.
#asks#anti mike flanagan#i don't know if you've seen it actually but thank you for the ask i enjoyed ranting#that ten minute scene haunts me. it was so awful

still thinking about how mike flanagan entirely wrote over the thematic critique of the nuclear family, & of how the misogyny innate to that system impacts women mentally that Shirley Jackson crafted in the original Haunting of Hill House... only to have the book be written by a dude in-universe. Thinking about how that book centred around a complex lesbian-coded dynamic between two central characters only for flanagan to move it to a side plot of a singular character arc out of seven. thinking about how nobody said fuck all about it cuz he's a white cis dude with netflix money.
#do not talk to me about bly manor i have not seen it#anti mike flanagan#<- so i hopefully have to deal with little to no bs abt this#shirley jackson#the haunting of hill house#eleanor vance

One thing I'll never understand about Mike Flanagan is how he read The Haunting of Hill House, a book about the typical family structure can be hamful to those who can't fit into it (such as unmarried women, and especially queer women), how it can be a site for abuse that makes you (depending of your interpretation) ripe for grooming from a malevolent entity or spiral into self-destruction due to being unable to fit in anywhere, into a show about the sancty of the nuclear family enduring over the trauma caused by an exterior force.

'Mike Flanagan stop being a coward and make a movie about child abuse actually about child abuse' challenge
#It's like he's afraid to fully commit#Like even in HoHH he couldn't just make the house an evil presence it had to be one(1) specific ghost pushing everything along#Because god forbid it isn't clear that this family is actually the best and perfectly healthy and happy xoxo#Oculus could've been soooo good!#If it would've stayed ambiguous!#And the plot holes were solved!#horror tag#Anti Mike Flanagan#Just because a LOT of people love his work#I can't really warm up to it except for Before I Wake

also like why does the cinematography from all his movies/shows always look like ass??????
with all due respect, why does m*ke fl*nagan feel the need to butcher established gothic horror classics instead of just making his own original material
#like it's either weirdly washed out or is lit like a daytime soap opera#sorry i'm a hater#mike flanagan#anti mike flanagan#text

to be fully honest this new trend of remaking and sanitizing not only gothic fiction and its genres (hill house, dorian grey, turn of the screw) and horror movies more generally (carrie, the exorcist) point to much more serious cultural movement than the death of art or the death of horror as a genre in the mainstream. specifically it is gesturing to a sanitizing effect in which cultural authority has now deemed the subversive as worthy of living but only if it is a) commodified and b) divested of all its subversive elements. we can play-act at feminism, trans inclusion, and anti-racism as long as it serves a corporate interest and does not actually challenge cultural authorities. we can adopt its aesthetics as something to be sold without actually inhabiting it ideologically. it is the newest manifestation of cultural authorities anesthetizing effect on anything that threatens it and it is becoming more and more prevalent. anyway i want to beat mike flanagan with hammers
#horror and the gothic by and large has always been the space for the repressed and subversive to exist and now its like. not that lol#not universally (there are many who still understand the medium) but oh my god

So, I'm sure we're all aware of a "Clayface" horror movie in development for the DCU with Mike Flanagan writing the script and potentially directing. Seeing how they bring Clayface to life on the big screen will be interesting. Still, many fear it will fall into the same trappings of other supervillain movies. As in, they will make Clayface into an anti-hero who strays too far from his villainous roots in an attempt to make him more sympathetic to audiences. Similar to what Sony did with Venom, Morbius, and Kraven, it potentially alienates fans who want to see his character stay true to its origins.
But this post offers a pitch on how a Clayface movie could stay true to the character's villainous nature by looking to the DCAU for inspiration, particularly in the "Batman: The Animated Series" episode "Growing Pains," one of the darkest episodes in the series, and I think, ill, it could serve as a blueprint for the film. After all, James Gunn said that the DCAU greatly influenced the direction he would take with the DCU.
Here is how I would go about adapting that story (assuming that it will take place before "Creature Commandos"):
The film's main characters will be Clayface (obviously), Annie, Jason Todd, and Batman. I know that it was Tim Drake in the original episode, but if "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" is jumping straight to Damien as Robin, then it's safe to assume Dick is already Nightwing, Jason is already Red Hood, and Tim is already Red Robin (and possibly a member of the Teen Titans). I think Jason would make for a great protagonist in this story, and it would lay the groundwork for his eventual falling out with Bruce and transformation into Red Hood.
The main story will be about Jason trying to help the amnesiac Annie, a spawn of Clayface in the form of a little girl, who he is pursuing. Sprinkled throughout the film will be standard horror movie tropes as Clayface tries to reabsorb Annie and kills people who get in his way. Annie will also have a series of nightmares: Clayface's memories of his life before becoming a villain and the events that transformed him.
A subplot will involve Jason and Bruce drifting further apart as Jason becomes more involved in helping Annie. This will lead to tensions between them as Jason questions Bruce's methods and priorities. This will build upon the inevitable tragedy of Annie realizing she and Clayface are the same person, ultimately leading to her sacrificing herself to save Jason like she saved Tim in the original show.
Distraught by Annie's sacrifice, Jason confronts Clayface in a showdown where he seemingly kills him. Batman, who saw the whole ordeal unfold, failed to arrive in time to stop Jason. He'll chastise Jason for killing Clayface, reminding him they don't kill their enemies. However, Jason will have none of it and argue that Bruce's moral code allowed Annie to die in the first place. The rift between Bruce and Jason has grown beyond repair, and we all know where this is heading.
Clayface will be revealed alive in a typical horror movie stinger at the end.
What do you all think of my rough idea for how to do a "Clayface" horror film adaptation within the DCU? What would you all want from the move?"Clayface" will be released on September 2026.

:D will do
my favorite female character: Tina Cohen Chang my beloved my everything they could never make me hate you. If she only has one supporter I am it.
my favorite male character: Mike Chang because besides one episode he is unproblematic. But hear me out hear me up Matt Rutherford. I am projecting yes.
my favorite book/season/etc: Season 3 hands down. Best music best plotlines and good blend of humor that's not too cringe.
my favorite episode (if its a tv show): Nationals is the epitome of Glee for me. I rewatch that episode at least once a year. I love it so much. I also really like Michael.
my favorite cast member: Jenna and Kevin because of the podcast. But I support Harry in all his endeavors and Amber is a queen.
my favorite ship: Tike 4 Life!!!! Should've lasted and I will die on this claim. (recently Tina and Finn tho)
a character I’d die defending: Finn Hudson lovable goofball Ricky Bowen energy. And he grows as a character.
a character I just can’t sympathize with: Lauren Zizes. Jacob Ben Israel. As much as I dislike Sue there are points where she doesn't bother me as much.
a character I grew to love: Rory Flanagan. He's just a little Irish boy and I love the scene where he tries peanut butter for the first time.
my anti otp: Where to start. I'm only going to say some uncommon ish ones. Jesse and Rachel, Rachel and Brody, Santana and Finn, Blaine and Dave, and Ryder and Unique. The rest I dislike are either common or just plain wrong so I feel no need to list them.

thank u to @greighish for the tag!!
LAST SONG: "sever the blight" by hemlocke springs - i'm obsessed
FAVORITE COLOR: like somewhere halfway between teal and blue? i'm not great with color names lol. aquamarine but darker??
CURRENTLY WATCHING: catching up on abbott elementary since i had been watching it with my roommate and then she moved away a year ago and i never started the second season lol; two episodes into the thai gl show me love which so far is mediocre but still watchable; about to do an over the garden wall seasonal rewatch; and almost certainly going to try the fall of the house of usher when it drops because i apparently can't stay away from mike flanagan shows. oh also the wnba finals and the end of the nwsl season!
LAST MOVIE: this is a great question and i have absolutely no recollection, i think i've only been watching tv and sports and short films recently? does the filmed version of the 2019 public theatre production of much ado about nothing in central park starring danielle brooks count as a movie?? if not then i guess i haven't watched a movie in months!
CURRENTLY READING: i'm rereading squee from the margins: race and fandom by dr. rukmini pande, which is absolutely essential reading if you are interested in racism in fandom!
LAST THING I GOOGLED: "fist bump emoji" lmao
SWEET/SPICY/SAVORY: i would probably be booted out of my family if i didn't say spicy. to sum up our take on spicy food in a single anecdote: when the vending machine at my dad's workplace runs out of flaming hot cheetos, he buys regular cheetos and squeezes out a stripe of sri racha onto each one as he's eating
CURRENT OBSESSION: fandom-wise, bad buddy, womp womp. otherwise: i've been working on this project around understanding anti-blackness in asian communities that i'll be sharing publicly soon, and that i have been pretty consumed by (in a good way!)
CURRENTLY WORKING ON: apart from aforementioned project, i've got a patpran fic and an inkpa fic in the works (both canon-divergent AUs, because i am me), and several bad buddy podfics as well!

I know you're like REALLY not into Mike Flanagan's works but do you know what is actually incredibly annoying? The Midnight Club is ACTUALLY a very good adaptation of Christopher Pike books. It's not just in-name only - some episodes are almost exact adaptations of Pike books and the expansions and changes make sense to the story. AND THAT'S THE ONE THAT GETS CANCELLED????
Geez. Stop punishing the guy for making faithful adaptations or original works- it's driving him to do more Gothic literature non-adaptations that clog up the tags for the "source" material!
