The Zouyu had been his heroes since he was young, but they were nothing but daydreams to him, no matter how much his grandmother said that they were real. That is, until the day he looked at Scott McCall in the hallway and all he was red, screaming in his head.  The moment shook him. But when Scott came to school the next day, suddenly ripped and amazing at lacrosse, Jian shook it off. Obviously, Scott was fine, right? Whatever he saw, it must have been his imagination. Over time though, these moments began to happen more and more, and soon enough he came to realize that his grandmother was right - the Zouyu were real. And his family were part of them.  Suddenly able to relate to his grandmother on another level, he began working with her to understand his visions. His sister may not have gotten the gift of clairvoyance, but she was certainly agile and fast enough that they could spar against each other evenly matched. And things were fine, for a while. Suddenly being known as the weird kid who likes to pop his nose into others’ business with annoyingly good advice is certainly a plus. That is, until Jian’s at a lacrosse game and looks at new girl, Willow Lahey, and sees her chained to the floor, red tinting the vision. And suddenly, his gift is no longer something fun but something that can effect real life.

Home From the Hill

For the auteur critics, Vincente Minnelli’s HOME FROM THE HILL (1960, TCM) is a masterpiece of color, light and décor reflecting the characters’ tortured emotional lives, often the result of their rebelling against the roles forced upon them by life. It’s a solid work of plastic art, but film is also a narrative art, and that’s where it falls down. It’s hard to escape the fact that this is also a film that tries to deal with harsh truths about masculinity only to detour into soap and sentimentality. But then, maybe it’s both great plastic art and failed narrative art, making Minnelli Schrodinger’s auteur.

Part of the problem is that the script, adapted by Harriet Frank Jr. and Irving Ravetch from William Humphrey’s novel, is all over the place. Robert Mitchum is a Texas land baron living a Hemingwayesque life of hunting, drinking and womanizing with his unacknowledged legitimate son (George Peppard), while his bitter, repressed, neurotic but still desirable wife (Eleanor Parker) has encouraged their son (George Hamilton) to stay a boy. When Mitchum sets out to man him up — which means teaching him to kill wildlife, culminating in a thrillingly shot wild boar hunt — it brings the husband and wife’s conflicts into focus…sort of. Part of the problem is that their estrangement seems the kind of thing that could be settled with one good honest conversation. Since Mitchum keeps trying to do that, and Parker keeps resisting, the film privileges his role, even though his womanizing at times seems pretty callous (“It’s my right to cross any man’s fence when I’m hunting.”). Then you throw in a pair of star-crossed young lovers and a teen pregnancy, and the whole thing starts a slow trek toward Peyton Place as we spend way too much time with teens whose parents don’t understand their simple biological urges.

Mitchum dominates the film effortlessly, even though he’s off-screen a lot while the youngsters work out less interesting issues. He gives even the worst lines the ring of truth through the sheer simplicity of his work. When he’s not on screen, however, the soap starts to rise, particularly in the big scene in which Parker reveals her husband’s past to Hamilton, who seems to be the only person in town who’s never heard of his father’s philandering. She has some quiet, restrained moments with Mitchum reminiscent of her best work in films like CAGED (1950) and THE DETECTIVE STORY (1951), but here Minnelli lets her indulge in a display of bulging eyes and heavy breathing that may tempt you to yell, “People are going to be watching this!” Hamilton is best when not overdoing the character’s bumptiousness. At times, he seems to be channeling Anthony Perkins on a bad day. Minnelli did much better work directing Peppard, even if pairing the classic Hollywood director with the hot young Method actor would have seemed a mismatch. Peppard was wise enough to pay attention when Minnelli told him to play against his more florid speeches. He has a beautiful moment describing his childhood to Hamilton. Minnelli also directs a simple scene between Mitchum and Everett Sloan that’s a joy to watch as the two masters negotiate over the latter’s plans for his daughter. Constance Ford turns up briefly as the town floozy, one of many small parts she played where she creates more meaning with a glance than most studio-trained stars could generate in a whole scene. In a just world, she would have been a big enough star to play the female lead and could have helped Mitchum wrestle the script into something deserving of Minnelli’s visuals.
