SYNOPSIS: “SAW The Musical captures the events of the first movie, parodying the Saw that started it all. Lawrence Gordon and Adam Stanheight find each other for the first time in the bathroom trap. Will they follow "the rules" as they discover each other's secrets? Will they escape the game in time and “saw” right through? A love story with fluidity (and lots more fluids), SAW The Musical: The Unauthorized Parody pushes the boundary on sexuality and how to love.” -Press Release

REVIEW: Even though they are related, there's a fine line between comedy, parody and satire. A satire can be painful, and not necessarily in a good way. SAW THE MUSICAL: THE UNAUTHORIZED PARODY OF SAW, after a run in Philadelphia comes to New York Off-Broadway this Halloween season.

The plot follows that of James Wan & Leigh Whannell 2004 film and mixes in a healthy bunch of musical numbers and satire. One of the key driving forces of the satire is the quickly blossoming sexual tension between Adam and Dr. Gordon. Other characters from the film, Jigsaw, Amanda and Zep receive some coverage and you can’t have “Saw” without the puppet, even making an appearance on a tricycle. The sexual innuendos felt crafted more for shock value than to be witty, as they fell flat on this viewer’s ears and seemed more sophomoric than cleaver.

In contrast, several of the songs were funny and witty, several feeling also sophomoric. As a fan of Monty Python, I’m also a fan of their song book. They could be off-color and vulgar, but had sharp witted lyrics and you understood the satire. Songs like “Saw Right Through,” "I'm Your Heroine," “I Want to Play a Game,” and “Pig in a Wig” come close, while songs like “Filthy Things” felt like they were pounding home the joke at the audience’s expense. The musical tracks were played over a nice sound system. However, there were a few times where the singers were off key. Actress Jill Owen had some of the best musical numbers in the show, but alas she was off key a few times.

The trio of actors are put through their paces with numerous scene changes and custom swaps that leave them little time to catch their breath between songs. During the performance I attended the blackouts were rather long and one of them they rest the musical cue as the actors were not ready by the end of the first go round. The production felt a bit chaotic as the costumes and props constantly felt a tad out of place. At one point the puppet seemed to be falling apart.

I went into SAW THE MUSICAL: THE UNAUTHORIZED PARODY OF SAW with a clean slate, no expectations, hoping for a few good laughs. There were times I felt the play dragging, the energy levels dipping between musical numbers. I didn’t have a bad time, just not a good one. Granted it is an Off-Broadway production, staged in a black box theater, and there were some likable things about the production. The level of the performance I attended felt more like an off-off-off Broadway production and left me feeling less invigorated and feeling more like I needed a nap. It could have been an off night, as I saw the play a week prior to its opening night, but I still have a few issues with the writing that make for a lackluster recommendation.

SAW THE MUSICAL: THE UNAUTHORIZED PARODY OF SAW begins performances on September 16, 2023, at AMT Theater, located at 345 West 45th Street. It will play on Saturdays at 11 PM and Sundays at 5 PM (after 2pm & 8pm Broadway curtains come down), running 100 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are $41-$113 (incl. fees). Extremely limited “Super Saw VIP Front Row Seats” including The Bathroom Mirror Merch Box are available for every performance for $113 total ($110 + $3 fee), VIP Front Rows A-B at $98 ($95 + $3 fee), Premium at $78 ($75 + $3 fee), Orchestra at $61 ($58 + $ 3 fee) & Rear Orchestra / Mezz at $41 ($38 plus $3 fee) and are available by visiting SawtheMusical.com or at the AMT Theater Box Office in person or by calling 646-543-4385. [vivian bond] had a pretty difficult childhood which unfortunately resulted in severe trust issues. she constantly felt out of place and alienated bc she was so “different” from the other girls. she now uses her social media to share her story/experiences and has gained massive internet popularity for simply being herself!! (she also posts alt girl lookbooks and is an activist for women’s rights)

[lesley shelley] is honestly such a sweetheart! at times he can be a little TOO open and vulnerable which sometimes leads him to getting hurt. :( he lives with his new bff amani (in san myshuno) and recently opened an onlyfans account to help pay off his student loans lol 

[nixon adams] is a goofy boy with two left feet (super clumsy). he’s sustained just about every minor injury you can imagine. a few years ago he was involved in a rock climbing accident in which he lost an eye and a few teeth. :((( he still continues to keep up his positive, fun loving attitude and hopes his future gf will embrace his many scars, bumps and bruises ;-;

[amani kessler] comes from a very tight knit family, (her mom is a school teacher, her dad is a detective, she has a younger sister and two fur babies). having been sheltered her entire life, she craves adventure and exploration -- take that however you want sdkljfsd

[tony b] (born charles anthony ballard) hides his past as much as he possibly can. almost no one knows he comes a from a wealthy and quite powerful family and he plans on keeping it that way. after a huge disagreement with his dad, he “legally” acquired his trust fund money and moved to san myshuno where he can safely and openly be who he wants to be!! him and his close friend, nixon work at a local tattoo/piercing shop together

[eleanor brock] was always teased for being the tall girl. little did she know, everything she had hated about herself would one day bring her great success. she’s a model/rising star in del sol valley and frequently makes appearances in reputable fashion magazines!! she hopes to walk the runway in her own designs in the future~

WHEREAS, Tony and Steve wish to enter into a temporary relationship for the mutual benefit of both parties, specifically to improve Tony's public image and to financially benefit Steve;

NOW, THEREFORE, in consideration of the promises and mutual covenants contained herein, the parties agree as follows:

**1. NATURE OF AGREEMENT**

1.1 **Purpose**: The purpose of this Agreement is to establish a public relationship between Tony and Steve for a period of one (1) year. This relationship is for public relations purposes only and is intended to generate positive media coverage for Tony while maintaining the integrity of Steve's public image.

1.2 **Relationship Parameters**: Both parties agree to publicly present themselves as being in a romantic relationship. This includes, but is not limited to, attending public events together, being photographed in public settings, and engaging in public displays of affection as necessary to support the narrative of a genuine romantic relationship.

**2. TERM**

2.1 **Term**: The term of this Agreement shall commence on the date of execution and shall continue for a period of twelve (12) months unless terminated earlier in accordance with Section 7 of this Agreement.

**3. COMPENSATION**

3.1 **Payment**: In consideration for Steve's participation in this Agreement, Tony agrees to pay Steve the total sum of Ten Million Dollars ($10,000,000), to be paid in the following manner:

a) **Initial Payment**: Two Million Dollars ($2,000,000) shall be paid within seven (7) days of the execution of this Agreement.

b) **Monthly Payments**: Seven Million Dollars ($7,000,000) shall be paid in twelve (12) equal monthly installments of Five Hundred Eighty-Three Thousand Three Hundred Thirty-Three Dollars and Thirty-Three Cents ($583,333.33), commencing on the first day of the first full month following the execution of this Agreement.

c) **Final Payment**: The remaining One Million Dollars ($1,000,000) shall be paid within seven (7) days following the successful completion of the one-year term.

3.2 **Expenses**: Tony agrees to cover all reasonable and necessary expenses incurred by Steve in the course of performing his obligations under this Agreement, including but not limited to travel, accommodation, and wardrobe expenses, provided that such expenses are pre-approved by Tony or his representative.

**4. OBLIGATIONS OF THE PARTIES**

4.1 **Tony’s Obligations**:

a) Tony shall make all required payments as set forth in Section 3.

b) Tony shall coordinate all public appearances and events to be attended by both parties.

c) Tony shall provide appropriate security and privacy measures to protect both parties from unwanted media intrusion.

4.2 **Steve’s Obligations**:

a) Steve shall make himself reasonably available for public appearances, photoshoots, and events as required by Tony or his representative.

b) Steve shall cooperate in the creation and dissemination of public statements and social media posts as agreed upon by both parties.

c) Steve shall not disclose the nature of this Agreement or the fact that the relationship is not genuine to any third party, except as required by law or to his legal and financial advisors who are bound by confidentiality.

**5. CONFIDENTIALITY**

5.1 **Confidential Information**: The parties acknowledge that the terms of this Agreement and the fact that the relationship is not genuine constitute Confidential Information. Both parties agree to keep this information strictly confidential and shall not disclose it to any third party without the prior written consent of the other party, except as required by law.

5.2 **Non-Disclosure**: Both parties agree not to disclose any personal or sensitive information about each other obtained in the course of this Agreement, including but not limited to private conversations, personal habits, and any other information not publicly available.

**6. TERMINATION**

6.1 **Termination for Breach**: Either party may terminate this Agreement immediately upon written notice if the other party breaches any material term of this Agreement and fails to cure such breach within thirty (30) days of receipt of written notice specifying the breach.

6.2 **Early Termination**: In the event of early termination by either party for any reason other than a breach by the other party, the terminating party shall be responsible for paying the non-terminating party liquidated damages in the amount of Five Million Dollars ($5,000,000).

**7. MISCELLANEOUS**

7.1 **Governing Law**: This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of __New York_____, without regard to its conflict of laws principles.

7.2 **Entire Agreement**: This Agreement constitutes the entire understanding between the parties and supersedes all prior discussions, agreements, or understandings of any kind, and neither party shall be bound by any condition, definition, warranty, or representation other than as expressly provided in this Agreement.

7.3 **Amendments**: No amendment, modification, or alteration of the terms of this Agreement shall be binding unless in writing, dated subsequent to the date hereof, and duly executed by the parties hereto.

7.4 **Severability**: If any provision of this Agreement is held to be invalid or unenforceable, the remainder of the Agreement shall remain in full force and effect.

Jessica Valenti at Abortion, Every Day:

Well, it’s official: Presidential nominee Kamala Harris has tapped Tim Walz to be her running mate. While I was still holding out hope for a Harris/Whitmer ticket, I think Walz is the best choice among the men the Vice President was said to be considering. The Minnesota governor is charming, funny and relatable—the internet says he has ‘dad energy’—and he’s clearly eager to take on Republicans. After all, it was Walz who started calling JD Vance and Donald Trump “weird,” an attack that’s working in the polls and has since been adopted by Harris’ campaign. Walz is also very strong on abortion rights, an issue that has become even more central to the presidential election now that Harris is the nominee. So it’s no surprise that while abortion rights groups are lauding Walz as the VP pick, anti-abortion activists and organizations are losing their collective shit. More on that soon, but first let’s get into Walz’s history on abortion and why the issue is so personal to him.

Walz & Abortion Rights

Walz won reelection in 2022 by campaigning on abortion rights, and under his leadership, Minnesota became the first state to codify abortion protections after Roe was overturned. Walz signed the PRO Act in January 2023, a law guaranteeing the right to abortion, birth control and other reproductive healthcare. And while abortion was already legal in Minnesota, the PRO Act added a vital extra layer of protection. Walz said, “No matter who sits on the Minnesota Supreme Court, this legislation will ensure Minnesotans have access to reproductive health care for generations to come.”

He also told CNN at the time, “This is very simple, very right to the point…We trust women in Minnesota.” In keeping with that vow to trust women, Walz also signed an executive order banning state agencies from cooperating with out-of-state investigations into abortion ‘crimes,’ and later signed a law that does the same. Minnesota’s Reproductive Freedom Defense Act shields abortion patients and providers from out-of-state legal or disciplinary actions for providing legal care; prohibits Minnesota agencies from enforcing out-of-state subpoenas, arrest warrants, and extradition requests; and protects patient records and privacy.

[...] Walz also ended a program that gave millions in funding to anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers that lie to and shame women, saying, “I think women deserve better than that.” In March, he accompanied Harris on her trip to an abortion clinic—a historic first by a sitting vice president. And the Minnesota governor has made clear that much like Harris, he’s not afraid to talk about abortion rights directly and candidly. Earlier this year, he slammed Republicans for running from the issue, saying that while they try to “lay a little low and not bring it up…I'll continue to talk about it.” Finally, what’s really interesting about Walz’s support for reproductive rights is that it’s not just political for him—the issue is personal. Walz has been open about his family’s IVF story, especially after the Alabama Supreme Court decision that frozen embryos were “extrauterine children.” Both of Walz’s children with his wife Gwen—Hope and Gus—were born with the help of IVF. Walz says, “It’s not by chance that we named our daughter Hope.”

Anti-Abortion Response

As soon Harris’ campaign announced Walz as her running mate, anti-abortion groups didn’t waste a moment before attacking the Minnesota governor as an extremist. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America released a statement calling Harris-Walz “the most pro-abortion Democratic ticket yet,” claiming that Democrats have “become the ‘Shout Your Abortion’ party, with no limits for any reason.” If only! Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life, said, “Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are both radically pro-abortion and see the lives of precious unborn babies as disposable inconveniences.” And Students for Life president Kristan Hawkins called them “the most radically pro-abortion ticket in American history.” (I love the idea that a woman who wants to see birth control banned thinks she has the standing to call anyone “radical.”) Hawkins’ group also tweeted that Walz “supports killing babies up until the moment of birth & even moments after the baby is born.” As I’ve noted before, this horrific ‘post-birth’ abortion lie being pushed by Trump is gaining Republican steam. It was just a few days ago, in fact, that Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Harris and Democrats support “abortion up until birth and even after birth.”

The pick of Tim Walz as Vice-President nominee for Kamala Harris is a godsend for reproductive rights and abortion access, especially in the post-Roe climate.

Radio, Radio!

I almost didn’t write this post for fear that you guys will think I’m even more of an old than I even am, but a) fuck it and b) there’s a way in which everything old is new again, so bear with me.  *takes deep breath*  OK, so when I was a young fan, a lot of my fannish life happened over the RADIO.  Yes, RADIO, that–I was about to say, that weird looking box with dials on it, but you probably don’t even have a radio. (*Shut up, shut up, I can’t hear you, la la I am going to live forever!*)  But you probably listen to something like radio on Spotify, or you listen to podcasts, or you might even use an app to listen to some great legacy radio station in your area.  So imagine you had a dedicated box just for that.

Anyway, in the before-times, radio then–like podcasts now–was a way to do fandom.  Music people know this of course, but I’m both a fan and a theatre person, and man, radio theatre was the best, and fannish radio theatre even better.  Britain had and still has a really strong radio drama tradition, which is smart because it lets them produce new plays by new writers for a fraction of the cost of a staged production.  But NPR in the US used to do radio drama too–they had a show called NPR Playhouse / Sounds of Theatre which I was devoted to.  

I have two particularly strong fannish memories from this era. First,  the joy of hearing the original Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on radio. Douglas Adams wrote Hitchhikers for radio and radio is the best way to experience it  - I mean, Zaphod having two heads and three arms is radio joke if there ever was one, and then all these poor TV and film people had to figure out how to actually get an actor with a second head. (Footnote 1).  I backtrack here to say that if you don’t know what I’m talking about, never read or saw any version of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy, click on the link and have yourself a whale of a time (or a bowl of petunias of a time.) (Sorry, the whole Hitchhiker’s thing makes me instantly 12 years old FOREVER. My whole world is Hitchhikers, Star Wars, and Doctor Who– Five.) 

Moving on: the second great fannish radio experience was NPR’s dramatized version of Star Wars, which had Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels playing their original roles, and Perry King as Han Solo - Perry King, you will remember (who am I kidding, you will absolutely not remember, but anyway), became a fan-favorite for a show called Riptide, so that was okay, too. And they expanded the text! And added new scenes!  I can remember Mark Hamill giving an interview talking about how different it was to play the part for radio; he talked about how you had to sort of put movement in your voice at all times: “I’m–grunt–putting on my–harumph–jacket!” But he was great at it–obviously, since he’s become such a famous voice actor since. And it’s wonderful that podcasting has brought theatre and fandom back into the medium of sound - podcasts are the obvious new media version of all this.

Okay, so bring this back to fan studies, these personal fannish reminiscences (and awesome links—you’re welcome!)  are brought to you by Martin Cooper’s book Radio Legacy in Popular Culture: The Sounds of British Broadcasting Over the Decades (Bloombury, 2022, excerpt available at the link).  Make no mistake, this is a fannish book in its way - Cooper is interested not just in radio but in artistic works that are in some way about radio, which he regards explicitly as fanworks about radio: 

In the case of fandom it could be alternative storylines; in our case of radio listening, it can be a reinterpretation of what has been heard on the airwaves. Hence, it is plausible to think of the responses I analyse in the chapters that follow as reinterpretations and critiques of radio listening; that they have been produced by professional writers and musicians makes them less of a subculture and more of a series of transformative texts that extend the meaning and understanding of the medium of radio. They are portrayals of the everyday action of listening to the radio: of paying attention to the programmes, the discussions, the documentaries, the dramas, the daily shows and the DJs.  

Note that the book has a specifically British focus, but British music and drama have influenced fandoms all over the world. I mean, Radio, Radio; Video Killed The Radio Star; Oh Yeah (There’s a Band Playing On The Radio), Radio Clash –Cooper frames all these songs as part of a British transformative fannish response to the medium.  Radio on!

Album 78 reaction part 2

So last week the episode made me feel disappointed and I couldn't pin point precisely why.

So I'm like let's look at what has happened before. Episode 100 for example, I've listened to it recently. There is a really good core to it, with a sweet lesson. However, there's also some corny bits and parts I don't like, but ultimately I wouldn't have been disappointed with an episode like ice fishing.

So then I asked why that is, if Ice Fishing isn't a better episode why is it a better milestone episode. My ultimate conclusion was that it had an ending. It built up everything that it had promised then delivered. Kris-Crossed part 1 was mostly just set up for the next episode, leaving the stand alone product only introducing some interesting concepts but not packing a real punch. It felt so lacking with Chris basically only being able to say see you next week and remember lying is bad kids. Which felt unfair to complain about since that's just the nature of how part 1s work, but that fact didn't really make me feel better about it. I wished it'd been a really tight one parter instead preferably with strong theme or a novel concept.

All of that stemed from the idea that that the 1,000th episode should ideally be a marker, a place to stop and breathe, a high five after climbing a mountain, but discussing it with a friend completely flipped the scrip for me. She (not an AIO fan just really good at media literacy) said she liked the idea of it being a two parter because it was like saying this isn’t the end of the journey. By virtue of it being a one of two it represents one of the show's major motifs, "keep listening." Which was just so poetic that suddenly all the set up felt like it said so much.

I wrote all of the directly prior to listening to the episode. Here's the reaction:

After a wildly successful run in Philadelphia, Cooper Jordan Entertainment will bring SAW The Musical: The Unauthorized Parody of Saw Off–Broadway this fall. Created by Cooper Jordan (DEX! A Killer Musical, The Rat Pack Undead), SAW The Musical has a book by Award -Winning Writer Zoe Ann Jordan (Virtuoso - NYCHFF) and music & lyrics by Patrick Spencer & Anthony De Angelis (An Axemas Story), and directed by Tony Award Winner Stephanie Rosenberg (Easter Bunny HOP! LIVE; Co-Producer: Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Anastasia) with music direction by Leigh Pomeranz (DEX! A Killer Musical). It will begin performances on September 16, 2023 in, advance of its opening on Sunday, October 1, 2023; the limited run is slated to run through January 1, 2024 at the AMT Theater (345 West 45th Street) in Midtown’s Theater District.

SAW The Musical: The Unauthorized Parody of Saw begins performances on September 16, 2023, at AMT Theater, located at 345 West 45th Street. It will play on Saturdays at 11 PM and Sundays at 5 PM (after 2pm & 8pm Broadway curtains come down), running 100 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are $41-$113 (incl. fees).
