Six Yōkai references to Studio Ghibli films

An avid lover and aficionado of Studio Ghibli’s work, I see references to and from it practically everywhere. Most recently at an exhibition about yōkai.

Yōkai are a class of supernatural creatures that roam the realm of spirits in Japanese folklore. The Japan Foundation organised traveling exhibition titled “Yōkai: Supernatural Monsters from Japan” introduces these curious spirits through a diverse range of media, including nishiki-e prints, emaki picture scrolls, sculptures, toys and films.

Apart from the harmonious and subtle color palettes, the lush and peculiar imagination of the ancient artist, his experienced hand drawing each brush stroke, and the excitement of seeing a picture scroll in real life, what really intrigued me were the images that looked like a scene from a Studio Ghibli film. Listed below are some of the references I spotted.

1.Mount Ōe Picture Scroll and Princess Mononoke  First in line was this one illustrating the heroic tale of the brave samurai Minamoto no Yorimitsu, who, according to legend, exterminated the quintessential yōkai Shuten-dōji, a mythical oni or demon leader of Japan. Although decapitated, the demon’s detached head still took a bite at the hero, who avoided death by wearing multiple helmets stacked on his head.

In Princess Mononoke, on a few occasions Lady Eboshi warns her people that it will take more than a single shot to kill a wolf god: “A wolf’s severed head can still bite.” Ignoring Ashitaka’s warning and attempt to stop her from committing yet another godslaughter, Eboshi succeeds in murdering the Forest Spirit. This victory is short-lived, however, as soon after Eboshi gets her well-deserved punishment for angering the gods when the wolf god Moro’s decapitated head bites off her right arm: “Moro’s head. It moved on its own,” feels like Eboshi had foreshadowed her own misfortune.

2.The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons Picture Scroll and  Howl’s Moving Castle  This is more of a visual than content resemblance. The big headed tengu and courtesan riding the cart instantly reminded me of the Witch of the Waste’s disproportionate head when she is similarly looking through the window of her palanquin carried around the city by her loyal henchmen.

3.The Nue and Princess Mononoke’s Forest Spirit  If you have ever leafed through The Art of Princess Mononoke book you might know that the Forest Spirit (shishigami) didn’t always have that same soothing smile and piercing eyes that are both amicable and cruel. In the early stages of his development his face was more human-like and uncanny than it is now. Though at first glance he resembles a deer, the Forest Spirit is actually a combination of several animals. This blog post lists them as follows: a red-monkey face covered with blue patterns, cat eyes and nose, goat ears, big body of a wild boar, the fur of a serow, and the tail of a dog. As a whole his appearance is one overflowing with peculiarity.

Similarly the Nue, a legendary yōkai or mononoke, in The Tale of the Heike, is described as having the head of a monkey, the legs of a tiger, the body of a dog and the front half of a snake for a tail. In other writings it is sometimes depicted to have the back of a tiger, the legs of a tanuki, the tail of a fox, the head of a cat, and the torso of a chicken.

The Nue is also said to have the ability to shape-shift, often into the form of a black cloud that can fly. Much like the Forest Spirit who at nightfall changes to the giant Nightwalker (deidarabotchi).

Another similarity worth mentioning is that in both cases the mythical creature is indirectly murdered by the Japanese emperor. Lady Eboshi intends to give the Forest Spirit’s head, which is believed to grant immortality, to the Emperor in return for protection from Lord Asano. In The Tale of Heike, the samurai Minamoto no Yorimasa slays the Nue, because its very existence causes fear in the Emperor who falls ill and is unable to recuperate.

4.The Foot Washing Mansion and Spirited Away  This nishiki-e print depicts a large-footed yōkai monster that descends from the ceiling and demands to be washed. The story is one of seven stories in the famous Seven Wonders of Honjo and goes as follows: At the time when the flowers were sleeping and the ushimitsu plant was blooming, a horrible, rotten stench would invade the house, and a giant foot bristling with hair would descend from the ceiling accompanied by an enormous sound. If you washed the foot, it would soon disappear back into the ceiling. But if you didn’t, the giant foot would rampage through the house until satisfied.

Most of Spirited Away’s plot takes place within a bathhouse for gods and spirits, known as kami, whose proprietor is the greedy witch Yubaba. The majority of these kami habitually visit the bathhouse for a regular wash to keep themselves clean — unlike the unwelcome enormous and foul smelling guest who imposes his presence and causes turmoil. He smells so bad that at first everybody, unsuccessfully, tries to prevent him from entering the bathhouse. Eventually they realise he is harmless — only after Chihiro cleanses him and sets him free from the taint of humanity.

5.Tsuchigumo and Princess Mononoke’s Tatarigami Tsuchigumo, which literally translates to “dirt/earth spider” is a historical Japanese derogatory term for renegade local clans, and also the name for a race of spider-like yōkai in Japanese folklore.

From the Japanese middle ages (Kamakura/Muromachi/Azuchi-Momoyama periods, or the late 12th to the early 17th centuries) onward, these renegade clans i.e. Tsuchigumo began to be depicted as giant, monstrous spiders. In The Tale of Heike, the samurai Minamoto no Yorimitsu, a member of one of the ruling clans, is depicted how he heroically defeats a giant spider yōkai known as the Tsuchigumo — which is actually a metaphor for him exterminating his opponents.

Tatarigami (i.e. “cursed god”) is the giant creature from Princess Mononoke that attacks the Emishi village and curses its last prince, the protagonist of the movie, Ashitaka. Behind the shape, resembling a giant spider covered in worms, hides the colossal boar god Nago. Nago is the first god that Lady Eboshi shoots using the then newly developed hand cannons. The iron ball lodged in the boar’s body causes him great pain, which only intensifies his anger and hatred towards humans. Blinded by his desire for revenge, he goes far to the east where, instead of Lady Eboshi, he punishes the native Emishi tribe. While trying to protect his village, Ashitaka kills the demon, but unfortunately the curse falls on him causing the young leader-to-be to leave his homeland.

The aboriginal Emishi tribe that Ashitaka comes from is one of these renegade clans that have been fighting for 500 years against the Japanese emperor — Yamato. They have been losing against him, and now, with their last prince being cursed to death, they are certain to die out.

As the samurai Minamoto no Yorimitsu exterminated the opposing clans — Tsuchigumo, so did Ashitaka in a way, by killing the Tatarigami, wipe out this endangered renegade clan, i.e. his own people. Thinking of it this way, the weight Ashitaka bears is enormous.

6.Personified Daikon Radish and Spirited Away’s Oshirasama According to Japanese ideas of animism, spirit-like entities are believed to reside in all things, both the living and the dead, including natural phenomena and objects. Kami and yōkai inhabit the spirit domain and in shape or nature can be either humans, animals, plants, natural phenomena or artifacts. Like for example this daikon radish (can you spot it?) appearing on omocha-e play pictures made for children’s entertainment as early as the Meiji era (1868–1912).

Root vegetables like radishes and carrots have often become internet sensations due to the occasional deformations they suffer. Their wonky shapes might have displeased a farmer in the past and ended up in the garbage instead of as pickles. Similar destiny had already befallen the objects of a house possessed by spirits. Discarded while the house was being exorcised, the aggrieved objects transform into yōkai and start plotting their revenge.

Oshirasama (Radish Spirit or Great White Lord) is the white, hefty, slow-moving guest at Yubaba’s bathhouse who resembles a radish sumo wrestler. His name, Oshirasama, is also the name of a kami of agriculture in the Shinto faith.

I talked to my mam about this in recent years, saying "yeah, kids are on videogames too much, tiktok, etc etc" and she said "well, didn't you used to do similar?"

Now, I know what she means by this. Unfortunately, for me at least, I had a shit time in school and basically everywhere else. I needed them so that I had my own place to do what I wanted, so I did minecraft, COD, assassin's creed, because they let me do what I wanted without having to wonder what others would think most the time.

Fast forward to now, with other people and other games. Games now, as oppose to the ones I played, will make you pay £5 for a new chracter to play with and the character just shows off to other players that you used real money, games will just be missing most of the content they advertise themselves having because of a battle pass which you require to access half the features, half the features that the battlepass will get you are just more character models therefore nullifying the character models you already have if you like this one more whilst also making those character models one of the primary features of the game. To clarify, that means that when these character models are the primary feature of your game, the mechanic by which you get them is spending real world money, it also doesn't help when people use those skins as a means of showing off their skill in the game.

In regards to social media, I never had them when I was under 13. And what was there, looking at my friends', was just a bunch of people saying "hey guys, look where I went!" And there was something nice about that. Now, although having a sinister underbelly before, it's been replaced by corporate greed, disguising itself as people. They'll say "guys, holy shit, guys - a bad thing happened, and I won't explain until the video is over."

On top of that though, the apps/websites themselves are built in such a way to keep you scrolling, keeping you engaged making you've not a moment to be bored. And the same applies to kids. Because a lot of young children wither have social media or use their parents' accounts, think YT kids, they're in the same position. And it doesn't help that we constantly get notifications about what's happening whilst we don't use the apps.

As, also purely anecdotal, evidence, I have a cousin. Now, to make it clear, he's autistic. His special interest is not lazy indir horror games, but the bootlegs of them, think names like Scary Nun and Escape Grandpa. And he talks about these with my Grandma all the time, she doesn't understand him at all, that part is ok. The issue is that it's all he talks about, and he doesn't start the conversation, someone else has to prompt him into speaking. So even when he's not playing them or watching someone play them he's only talking about them. You'll say, "hey, last video, we've gotta do something soon" and he'll say ok and then move onto the next one, because they're built in such a way that you're either moved onto the next one automatically or the shiny pictures will act like Macbeth's wife, taunting him to press another. And then he does.

Maybe its a case of learning restraint, learning to go outside, learning to do anything else. But how are they meant to learn that sort of thing when everywhere they go is just people doing the exact same shit, always reminding them of the thing they like doing?

The Lost Dreamer

5/5 stars Recommended for people who like: fantasy, magic, dual POVs, dream-walking, political intrigue, Mesoamerican fantasy, characters of color, strong female leads To start, the settings in this book were so rich and it really felt like I was there with the characters. The capital was definitely more intriguing to me than the village Saya was in, simply since there was more stuff happening in the capital and there was so much history and tradition there. I liked that Huerta showed different parts of the land she created, and the characters actually travel quite a bit so while a good amount of the book stays in the capital and Saya's village, there's still a lot outside of those two settings that we get to see. I enjoyed reading about the culture as well. It's well-developed and has a lot of intricacies to it that different characters understand (or don't). The exposition is done well too, so the information feels like it's being revealed naturally rather than being forced onto us. Like with the setting, I liked that Huerta showed several different cultures and their traditions. I liked that we got to glimpse a wider world and that it felt like those other people and places had stories going on in them that didn't necessarily tie into the one in the book. As a more minor point, I did really like how each of the groups who came together in the city seemed to care for one another. Likewise, Saya does get to build up her own found-family and I liked how connected they all became. I will say that I was much more invested in Indir for about the first half of the book. Her story takes place in the capital city and has a lot of moving parts and people to it. She's living in a time of major change, both personally and in general. Despite their importance, the role of the Dreamers is in question when the king's son comes back to the city. Indir struggles a lot with what's going on, but once she decides she needs to, she also relies on her family to help guide her. It was hard to remember sometimes that Indir is quite young, probably about 17 or 18, since she has such an important role and so many burdens, but then there are moments with her family and friends where she does get to be her age. Saya's story does start picking up a lot around the 1/3 to 1/2 mark. For a while she's under the thumb of Celay, her mother, who is a piece of work. Her story revolves a lot more around coming into herself and realizing that just because her mother is her mother and says she's trying to protect her, it doesn't mean she actually is protecting her. I liked getting to see Saya's growth and her coming out of her shell. She's met with a lot of understanding and compassion, which I appreciated, and I liked that so many people were willing to go to bat for her once she started standing up to Celay. While it takes up until the very end, Indir and Saya do meet up with one another, as do some of the characters from both stories. I'm interested to see where things go since the ending was set up for there to be a sequel. I want to see more of everyone interacting with one another too since the dynamics that are presented at the end seem so interesting and complex (I'm also hoping to get some answers about a couple characters). The 'lost' dreamer is identified, but I also think that it can be interpreted in a couple of different ways, so I'm also curious to see where that goes. There was a major twist in the book that I did not see coming at all until it was revealed, which is pretty impressive considering I tend to be good at picking up on those things. It definitely came as a shock, but it made a lot of sense and I'm curious to see how it develops/where it goes in the next book.

-> Used to ask questions, informations, doubts..., these kind of sentences have a question mark at the end, and who asks these things, marks that with a proper intonation.  E.g. Ti piace la pasta? = Do you like pasta? 

-> They can also be introduced by adjectives, pronouns, adverbs called “interrogativi” (interrogative): E.g. Chi c’è? = Who's there? (chi=> fixed; always used for person or animals) Quale film ti piace di più? = Which film you like the most? (quale -sing.-, quali -plu.- => used for people and things. In front of “è” and “era” turns into “qual”, no apostrophe needed. -> There are as many types of questions according on the number of objects questions can have. 1) Totals (the question is about the whole sentence): e.g. Vieni al mare? = Do you want to come to the sea? You can answer with the adverbs yes or no.

2) Partials (the question is about just one part of the sentence: subject object and their adjectves, pronouns, adverbs) e.g. Cosa dice? = What is s/he saying?

3) Disjunctives (when you have an option) e.g. Sei di Roma o di Milano? = Are you from Rome or Milan?

According on the type of question, we have real questions and rhetorical questions. 4) Real questions: about something we really don’t know. e.g. Dov’è andato Luigi?= Where did Luigi go?

5) Rhetorical questions: used to stress a fact asking for a confirmation from the person we’re talking to. These questions can be used with other elements like: è vero (is it true), non è vero (isn’t it true), vero (true), nevvero (don’t you say), forse (maybe), forse che (maybe it’s), forse che non (maybe it’s not), eh (uh) e.g. Ti senti in colpa, eh? = Are you feeling guilty, uh?

These rhetorical questions can be divided into: -didactic (we ask a question ourselves before answering, to make the speech more entertaining) e.g. Cos’è una biro? Qualcosa con cui si scrive = What’s a pen? Something we use to write -narrative (again the question is used to liven up the narration. the answer follows) e.g. E a quel punto cosa fa Gigi? Mi salta in braccio! = And you know what Gigi does then? He jumps in my arms! -diffracted (if the question has another function, usually a nice request) e.g. Mi daresti quel libro? = Could you give me that book? -of courtesy (if the question is used just to start a dialogue) e.g. Come va? = How are you?

-> Verbal moods: -indicative (more often) e.g. Cosa farò? = What willI do? -conditional*, subjunctive or infinitive (occasionally, to express a doubt, an hesitation) e.g. Cosa vorresti fare? = What would you like to do? Se fosse vero? = (What) If it was true? Che fare? = What to do? *conditional is also used for interrogative questions that are part of an “if sentence” or in interrogative sentences diffracted (nice requests). e.g.  Se tu avessi ragione, cosa succederebbe? = If you were right, what would happen? Mi passeresti la penna? = Could you pass me the pen?

->the verb can be left implied when you want to invite the other person to reply you. e.g. Allora? = So? E tua zia? = And your aunt? (how is she?/to ask infos if you know she had a problem or just because you know her....)

-> Where to put the subject -If the sentence is introduced by an element (adj., adv., pron.) the subject must be put after the verb: e.g. Quando arriverà Giulio? = When will Giulio arrive? - If you want to give importance to the subject anyway, put it at the beginning of the question. You can put the comma between subject and verb ONLY in this case. e.g. Giulio, quando arriverà? = When will Giulio arrive?  -In all the other situations, you can find the subject coming after the verb only when you also have other grammatical elements (dir./indir. objects and such)  e.g. Verrà con noi Giulio? = Is Giulio coming with us?  - If not, the question sounds REALLY TOO formal, like in weddings:  e.g. Vuoi tu prendere come tuo sposo... = Would you like to take as your husband...

INDIRECT QUESTIONS

-> These are subordinate clauses that express a question, a doubt or something similar that is already in the main clause’s verb (e.g. domandare =to demand, chiedere =to ask, pensare =to think, credere =to believe, sapere =to know) or noun (e.g. domanda =question, dubbio =doubt, problema =problem) or adjective (e.g. curioso =curious, dubbioso =doubtful, pensoso =thoughtful). 

-> These can be introduced by conjunctions (se =if, come =like,as, perché =because, quando =when, quanto =how/much/long...) or interrogative adjectives/pronouns (chi =who, che cosa =what, cosa =what, quale =which, quanto =how/much/long...) e.g.  Non so se restare o andare via = I don’t know if to stay or to go away  Mi chiedo come stia Luca = I ask myself /I’m curious to know how is Luca doing

-> There are explicits and implicits indirect questions  1) Explicits (have the verb at the indicative, subjunctive or conditional mood) e.g.  Gli chiesi come stava = I asked him how he was doing Si chiedeva cosa sarebbe successo se non avesse detto la verità = S/He was asking her/himself what would have happened if s/he hasn’t said the truth 2) Implicits (have the verb at the infinitive)  e.g. Mi domando cosa fare = I ask myself what to do (what should I do)

-> Differently from the DIRECT QUESTIONS, the subject doesn’t have to be put after the verb in any case (but you can choose to: it’s not mandatory). e.g.  Cosa prepara Maria? -> direct Mi chiedo cosa prepari Maria / cosa Maria prepari -> indirect

-> Occasionally (also to avoid repetitions) you can leave the whole indirect question implied and leave just the grammatical element that introduces it. e.g.  Lo fece senza capire (il) perché. = s/he did it without knowing why (Lo fece senza capire perché lo facesse -> s/he did it without knowing why s/he was doing that)

-> Worth to keep into consideration, but not always true: It might happen that indicative mood and subjunctive mood don’t follow the “common” rules of use (indicative = mood of reality/objectivity; subjunctive = mood of subjectivity), but they can be used according to the different tone of the writing (e.g. indicative mood for more informal writings; subjunctive mood for more formal ones). Also, the subjunctive is more used if the verb of the main clause is negative.

Who felt romantic feelings first?

When they were saplings, it was definitely more obvious Arceidai was in love with Theitia. They were absolutely head over heels they adored her and it was very obvious to anyone with eyes. And it took a while for them to figure out that that's what that was, it wasn't till she was in the nightmare court and Caithe said something along the lines of "I know you loved her" that they realized exactly what those feelings were.

With Theitia, it's harder to tell exactly when she fell in love with Arceidai, she was much subtler, but the second she admitted it was when she read the letter they had sent her when they left for the Priory, and they had signed it "forever your Sunshine", the little nickname she used to make fun of their feelings for her, which was a real "you wanna fuck me so bad it makes you look stupid" moment on their part, and she realized that she fucked up and caught feelings, and that she had feelings for them for a goddamn while.

What was their first kiss like?

Arceidai and Theitia were reunited during Heart of Thorns, and spent a lot of time together in lws3 freshly traumatized from the Maguuma Jungle. Theitia was pretty much locked in their old room in the Grove by the Wardens and Arc was busy repressing every single emotion they had so they wouldn't go off the deep end, they bonded because they needed some kind of connection, they understood what the other was going through, and despite everything they had been through they were familiar to each other. The way I've described it before is that they were clinging to each other to survive. So, they didn't actually get together, they did not address their feelings it was very much an unspoken agreement of "Niether of us is in a good place, we can'tafford to lose one another right now, we aren't going to do this until we are both ready." And that was the way it was for about a year and a half, two years ish

So come Path of Fire, Theitia breaks her parole with the Wardens to go with Arceidai to the desert. And the dynamic changes A Lot because they go from "let's not address this" to "Crap, us not addressing this has left us in a weird place and we don't know exactly what the nature of our relationship is" and there's a lot of touching moments of them working together becoming a team getting closer and then Arceidai Fucking Dies.

So Theitia becomes the Commander. She's heartbroken and pissed, goes to kill God, we love the energy. Arceidai has a lot of character development while they're dead, but the part that's relevant here is that they realize they are ready to move on from their grief, they are ready to let themself be happy and have connections stop isolating themself and be more than just "The Commander" and part of that is that they are in love. And they are ready to let themself be in love.

And so, they come back to life, the battle with Balthazar is in full swing. Everyone is like "What the fuck" they're like "There's no time, give me a weapon" they come in wielding Sohothin, it's an epic battle there's symbolism, there's Synergy, Aurene is freed Balthazar is killed Kralkatorrik goes wild and in the middle of all that magic going batshit and everything being on fire they see each other and after everything they've been through they're here, together, and it's the most natural thing in the world to the point where they're both surprised it took them this long.

So I guess what I'm saying is a really passionate heat of the moment thing in front of gods flayed corpse after several years of built up mutual pining?

Who said "I love you" first

The problem with this question is that because both of them are repressed morons a lot of their feelings are left unspoken, or, said indirectly. There are a lot of times when one of them has said "I love you" without saying "I love you"to the point where they don't even notice the first time it's said because it's just so obvious that of course they've said it before. On both counts it's Theitia. The first time, Arceidai asks why she didn't kill them in Maguuma, she says, off the top of my head, I've actually written this scene but haven't posted it, "Because you're my best friend. I've said as much before." Which roughly translates to "I have loved you since we were saplings, but you are clearly grieving and I am not putting that shit on you right now", the first time the actual phrase was used was probably more like "Sunshine, I love you, but you're being incredibly stupid right now."

The 100 rewatch: 2x09 Remember Me

Unlike the previous episode, this one is one of my favorites. Very character-based and emotional, wonderfully written, acted, great music and cinematography, editing, everything is perfect. Maybe it doesn’t have a crucial event like some others, but it’s very important for character development and some of the key relationships.  (This was also the episode where I thought that “the subtext is rapidly becoming text” when it comes to one such relationship. But it turns out that what I find obvious may not be as obvious to the entire fandom.)

I love the way this episode focuses on Clarke’s emotional state and the way the trauma of having had to kill Finn, and how that affects her. I may not have liked Finn as a character much, but he makes for a really effective hallucination haunting Clarke, as an embodiment of her guilt and trauma and her fear of the pain that love can bring. (Although the title feels kind of ironic now, since the fandom has pretty much forgotten Finn and his significance for Clarke’s character arc.)

What happened makes Clarke all the more determined to make the truce with the Grounders work, as a way to feel that the sacrifice was not for nothing: “If this truce doesn’t hold, I killed Finn for nothing”. Now, the alliance will ultimately fail, the Grounder army won’t help her against the Mountain Men, and instead it’s Bellamy’s inside mission (which was his idea – something that people tend to forget for very strange reasons*) that will play the crucial role in saving their people from Mount Weather. However, if not for the truce, the Grounders would have attacked them, more people would die, and they would have probably never gotten the chance to save the 47 from the MW. So, in the end, it was not for nothing.

One relationship that’s changed due to Finn’s death – and in this case, maybe poisoned forever – is Clarke’s friendship with Raven. Raven starts off being completely furious at Clarke over killing Finn, even sucker-punching her at one point and calling her a murderer. By the end of the episode, after seeing Gustus executed in a prolonged and torturous way, she realizes that Clarke was sparing Finn. But while it seemed that their friendship was fixed, I’m not sure that things were ever the same – because Raven will go on to have a few other occasions where she was unfair to Clarke and blaming her to things like deciding who lives or dies, even when she was one of the people entrusting her with that responsibility. When she was possessed by ALIE in season 3, did she still really blame Clarke on some level for Finn’s death (and ALIE picked up on that and made her say it)? Or was it just ALIE (and Raven’s subconscious) coming up with something that plays on Clarke’s insecurities – the idea that she causes harm and death to the people she loves and who love her?

One of the most emotional scenes is Clarke’s argument with Abby, which shows how complicated their relationship is, and is a resolution of the grudge Clarke has carried against her for her father’s death. Abby tries to comfort Clarke, telling her of her own experience (“The pain will fade… What got me through is my love for you”), and Clarke lets her mother comfort her only until she realizes that Abby is talking about Jake, and gets furious over that comparison, pointing out that Abby’s betrayal of Jake is nothing like Clarke having no choice but to kill Finn. She still hasn’t forgiven her, even though they have been on good terms – the wound is still there. But when Abby tries to explain herself, saying she didn’t know Jaha would execute Jake, and Clarke calls her out on the fact that she must have still realized Jake wouldn’t give up, Abby basically admits that she prioritized the big picture – what she thought was for the well-being of all her people – over her husband, and Clarke concludes, shocked, “We are the same”.

It’s interesting that, after Abby finds love again with Kane, she will do the opposite and absolutely refuse to sacrifice him in season 4, when Jaha asks that of her. It’s a do-over, determination not to do the same this time (as she said in season 3 when Kane was threatened with execution, “I cannot do this again” – which was the first time she pretty much admitted she loved him. Then she goes on to kind of betray him during the Dark Year (not at cost of his life, but at the cost of his principles and emotional well-being), which is one of the things she felt guilty about (in addition to pushing Octavia into more extreme actions and being responsible for a lot of the deaths and horror) when the guilt broke her and made her an addict. But at the end of season 5, she was again fully determined to “save the man I love”.

Clarke herself says something very similar to Bellamy (similar to what Abby later told Kane in S3), when he tells her about his plan to infiltrate Mount Weather and disable their acid fog from the inside, and she opposes it on the grounds that it’s too risky: “I cannot lose you, too”. But she eventually changes her mind, after being told by Lexa that “Love is weakness”.

This phrase is one of those repetitive phrases that we hear many times during the show (like “Blood must have blood” or “My sister, my responsibility”) – and characters either believe in it, or oppose it and declare the opposite, that “Love is strength”. In this episode, it seems like it’s something that Lexa herself came up with, due to her own traumatic experience, after the Ice Nation queen captured, tortured and killed her lover, Costia, and then sent Lexa her head. (This is the first mention of the Ice Nation, or any of the separate Grounder clans. Queen Nia was established as extremely ruthless from the start even before we knew who she was.) Later in S3, we learn it was originally something Lexa first heard from her mentor, Flame-keeper Titus. Then in S5, we learn it’s actually something that all Flame-keepers tell all Commanders. It’s probably a retcon, but a really good one. It makes sense, from what we’ve seen of the Grounder culture that this is what all Commanders would be taught. It’s not a healthy way to live, and it’s very questionable advice, but you can see where it comes from: a leader may be compromised if someone they love is captured or threatened, enemies or rivals may use that to manipulate them to their advantage, or a leader may be influenced by someone they love (and I’m sure Flame-keepers would like to be the only ones to influence them) for better or worse, or a leader may make decisions prioritizing their loved ones over the well-being of the entire group – because it’s human to care more about those close to you than a big number of people you don’t know.

Now that we know her entire history, Lexa’s entire life seems pretty sad: from a very young age, she’s been both enormously privileged and powerful, and given an enormous amount of responsibility and denied anything like normal childhood (not even what goes for normal childhood on average in this post-apocalyptic world) – raised to fight a bunch of other kids to the death, winning the Hunger Games-like Conclave at around 12, getting a chip put into her head with a bunch of dead people’s memories, seeing all the adults around her fawn over her, obey her and expect her to make decisions about everyone’s fate, while at the same time being told that she must be “strong” at all times, not show any weakness – which includes not loving anyone – because her rivals and enemies may use that to kill her and take over. (I doubt that Commanders can ever retire, or lose power and survive.) She’s still human and a young woman who wants love so she fell in love, but then her terrible experience convinced her that her mentor was right. It’s very ironic that she’s the one to tell Clarke that “love is weakness”, because she’ll soon fall in love with Clarke and start wanting Clarke to love her. I think it’s in the next episode that you can see the moment when she falls for Clarke. At this point, I think she was just impressed with/drawn to Clarke and saw in her an equal, another, slightly younger girl who’s a leader with a lot of responsibility, intelligence and courage, and who can make tough decisions. This is something new for her, because everyone else she’s ever been close to has been her subject: Costia, Gustus, Anya, even Titus. But she doesn’t know how to live without power, it or how to treat people as equals (as seen in her attempts to control Clarke in S3). Another contradiction is that Clarke is warmer and more idealistic than Lexa, and I believe that Lexa is drawn to Clarke partially because of the way Clarke can love and fight for people she cares about – but at the same time, Lexa, with her leadership lessons, is constantly trying to make Clarke more like herself, teach her to be less caring, more ruthless, readier to treat people as expendable and sacrifice them, as she herself has been taught a leader must be.

As far as I’m concerned, Clarke was a much better leader the way she was, and those lessons are not good for her. She’ll change her mind later and won’t really accept the “love is weakness” philosophy. But in this episode, in her vulnerable state and faced with the reality that she will have to make more terrible choices, she feels that it’s the only way to both do her duty, and avoid pain – by trying to repress feelings of love. Which makes her change her mind and decide to let Bellamy go to Mount Weather, after all.

…And this is the point where I thought “Wow, the show is really getting obvious about Bellarke?” The show has been making romantic hints about them since 1x08, but it was mostly subtexty and ambiguous about the nature of their feelings for each other, except for that one moment in 1x08 where Bellamy obviously realized he was attracted to Clarke but seemed like he didn’t want to deal with it. This is the first time the word “love” is mentioned in connection to their relationship, though indirectly (and the last time before Octavia’s “another traitor who you love” remark to Bellamy in season 5). First we have Clarke saying “I can’t lose you, too” and explicitly equating Bellamy’s role in her life with Finn’s. Later, Bellamy is the one to figure out that the person who actually poisoned the cup and apparently tried to kill Lexa was actually her loyal bodyguard Gustus, who was framing the Skaikru (and Raven specifically) as a way to destroy the alliance and ‘protect’ her from the backlash Gustus thought it would cause to her (his scheme did not involve any immediate danger to her, as he drank the poison, knowing he would survive). And then there’s dramatic transition from a close-up of Clarke’s face to a close-up of Bellamy’s face, all emotional and under dramatic lighting, in another scene, as he’s explaining how he figured out the culprit: “He would do anything for her, to protect her… It just makes sense” It couldn’t be more obvious he’s talking about himself and his feelings for Clarke. (Earlier on there was a scene where we can notice if we pay attention that he was standing next to Clarke protectively and even threw her cup, which was kind of funny, because it’s not like she was going to drink from it.) Octavia is like “Look at the thanks he got” – which is kind of stupid, why should Lexa be grateful that Gustus went behind her back, schemed and nearly ruined her alliance and caused a war “for her own good”? But it’s either Octavia talking about Bellamy and Clarke and bashing Clarke as she often likes to do, or the show trying to set up “Oh noes!! Will Clarke sacrifice Bellamy?? Stay tuned!” tension for the rest of the season in a slightly over-dramatic way. Then we get dramatic close-up of Clarke and Bellamy, as she tells him to go to Mount Weather after all, explaining her change of heart: “I was being weak”. Followed by the scene of her saying goodbye to Hallucination!Finn: “Love is weakness!”

As far as subtle hints go, I thought this was more like hitting the viewer on the head with a sledgehammer? But it turns out that what I thought was obvious isn’t at all obvious to many other fans, so whatever. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Now, I’m not sure what exactly Clarke and Bellamy at this point thought on the conscious level their feelings for each other were, and maybe they didn’t even have the same idea what their relationship was or could be. It’s interesting that Bellamy was making the parallel between himself and Gustus – who obviously had a close platonic relationship with Lexa (going by their relative ages and the fact she used to be a child ruler, he had probably been her bodyguard since she was a little girl, and was something like a father or uncle figure to her, in addition to just a subject’s devotion to the Commander). So it can be argued that’s how Bellamy sees their relationship to Clarke at this point – or that he’s just realized how devoted he is to her, but isn’t sure about the nature of those feelings. (Which is certainly not for lack of attraction, since we know since season 1 that he’s attracted to her.) But Clarke is making parallels between Bellamy and Finn, her dead love interest, and Bellamy and Costia, Lexa’s dead lover. The implication was clear: if you are a leader and you love someone, harm can come to them exactly because of your relationship; you may be “weak” and fail to do your duty because of your feelings (like not let someone go on a mission they may be uniquely qualified for), or you may risk their life (say, letting them go on a dangerous mission) and lose them and them feel terrible pain, so it’s best to repress all such feelings. To be fair, they kind of intermingle the non-romantic and romantic relationships here in all the parallel, since there’s also a parallel between Finn and Gustus as Clarke watches Lexa kill Gustus, and Abby declares “We are not so different after all”.

The only thing I dislike about this episode are fandom’s bad interpretations of this moment. I loved the dark atmosphere of these scenes, but I was scratching my head when I saw people going on about how it’s all about Bad Clarke who doesn’t care about Bellamy and finds his life to be an acceptable risk (even though the rest of the season and subsequent seasons make it clear she doesn’t find it acceptable) and how he’s so devoted to her but “look at the thanks he got” (you mean all the times she showed she’s just as devoted and protective of him as he is of her? But let’s take characters’ lines literally instead and ignore actual events). She’s just practically said she loves him, you dummies! Bellamy himself doesn’t understand that, because he has no context to her line “I was being weak”, so he looks hurt and obviously think she doesn’t care that much as it seemed for a moment – but the audience does have the full context and should be able to put 2 and 2 together! Or even worse – people who write long ranty posts about how Bad Clarke was “abusive” to Poor Bellamy because he’s in a subjugated position to her and how she “sent” him to danger and he got tortured in Mount Weather for doing her bidding (?). As in, when she decided to stop objecting to him going on a mission that was his idea and his plan and that he wanted to do because he cares about saving his friends? When was Bellamy in a subjugated position to Clarke? He even said he didn’t take her orders and she had to appeal to their personal relationship to stop him from going. They often argue and disagree and take stands and even get in a big conflict almost every season. Funny how some people who claim to be Bellamy fans are eager to ignore his agency, accomplishments and strength of character. I guess that’s what happens when hating Clarke and being anti-Bellarke (in any form) is the priority. To be fair, the show kind of gave them something to build that one when they had ALIE!Raven taunt Bellamy in season 3 about supposedly just listening to Clarke’s orders, but to take ALIE’s attempts to play on characters’ insecurities as gospel truth, in spite of what we actually see of the character dynamics, is like taking it literally that Clarke is actually “poison” to her loved ones. (Then again, I guess some do take that literally.)

But I refuse to let bad fandom interpretations ruin a great episode for me.

Meanwhile, in Mount Weather, the last prominent Mountain Man villain is introduced – Carl Emerson, head guard and Cage’s right hand man. Probably the Mountain Man I hate the most, for the fact that he kept on being a nuisance in season 3 and wasn’t just evil at that point but also annoying. Emerson seemed to be in quite a senior position, since he was reporting to Cage about Lexa’s actions (explaining that she’s a kind of leader who makes alliances – referring probably to her efforts to unite the clans). Probably intel gotten from torturing captured Grounders.

It’s not often that the Mount Weather portion of the episode is the lighter one, but that’s the case here. It feels almost like Adventure Squad from season 1, as Miller and Monty use their respective skills in thieving/hacking, with Maya’s help, to send Jasper’s message out and reach other Arkers. Like Raven a couple of episodes ago, Monty has figured out the stuff about radio frequencies, including the fact that the Mountain Men crashed the Exodus ship in season 1.There’s also a rare comic moment with Monty as he manages to send a message by pretending to be doing maintenance work, but then has to run away when Emerson figures him out.

But it ends in a dark way, with Monty and Harper both put in cages, and the revelation that the Mountain Men had already built one for each of the 47.

(Fortunately, Monty and Harper were too smart to ever use the line “We found each other in cages” as foreplay.)

TImeline: the next day after Finn’s death, which was a day or so after 2x06, and that was 2 days after 2x05. This is maybe a week since the end of season 1 – 10 days at most?

Body count: Gustus –executed in a painful, prolonged way by a bunch of Grounders, with Lexa delivering the final blow, and telling her to “Stay strong” as his last words.
