I jest, but I’m gonna preface this with a few things:

1) as it pertains to what I’m about to say about Martin, I don’t think he’s the most toxic character nor is this anti Martin or Martin hate. I’m simply exploring some of his less saviory aspects.

2) I do not hate or even dislike jonmartin, dare I say, I even enjoy it from time to time. No relationship is perfect and it is important to identify toxic behaviors in relationships in media.

3) to the second anon, we’re clearly never gonna agree on my love, Georgina Barker, I’ve already stated why I like her narratively and don’t feel like repeating myself.

Okay, on to Martin.

Simply put, he’s canonically pretty manipulative (including manipulative towards Jon). He even calls out himself to himself for manipulating himself when he went into the lonely during the eyepocalypse.

Annabelle fucking Cane, the person literally manipulating the whole of the plot, all but calls him manipulative and considered him for an avatar of the web in mag 196:

Also as it pertains to JonMartin, Jon does exhibit his own somewhat toxic behaviors but I’m just focusing on Martin for this post.

Martin does somewhat gaslight Jon at times. Notably the “I know I asked you to go on a smiting spree but you’re the one who’s wrong for doing it.” He also looks to Jon so many times to pas his ego and self esteem and frankly — it’s just not healthy to be a therapist to your s/o in this way.

I also understand why Martin isn’t comfortable with Jon’s statements or certain aspects of his power but Jon goes out of his way to help Martin with aspects of being attached to the lonely and I just think to some extent it’s not reciprocated on Martin’s part.

There’s a few more things I could say but I’m honestly worried the hardcore Martin/JonMartin stans are already gonna come for me on this one.

Rating FFXVI characters based on how badass they were when they died*

*the official status from Square Enix for three of the characters is "it's up to the player's interpretation" but for the purpose of this post obviously I'm rating as if they died.

Spoilers start here!

Elwin 4/10

It's always a bit badass to die saving your kid. So he gets some points there. And he didn't go out crying about how he was betrayed. That said, he was REALLY caught off guard by Head Chopper, and as the ruler of a nation and the spouse of a conniving bitch I expected more from him.

The Bastards 7/10

Squashed by Boulder Dude gets lots of points for the memorable epic scream. Axe Dude here gets points for getting murdered without messing up his hair. Now THAT's talent. Tiamat gets no points. He was easily beaten by his subordinate, plus he was given a chance to escape his position and he chose to remain loyal to Sanbreque. Like bro. That was your chance. So many people died in that battle. You could have just vanished. Did anybody go looking for Clive after he vanished? No! You died Sanbreque's loyal little bitch.

Benedikta 9/10

Benedikta went out like a champ. An absolute badass. She didn't even flinch at the previously unknown Eikon of Fire, she just took one look and was like "ok yeah sure I''ll kick this one's ass too." Girl regrew limbs and stood on Ifrit's face. She showed the player how scary eikons are. I'd give her a 10/10, but she threw my dog.

Cid 10/10

Cid destroyed a mothercrystal, got stabbed by an interdimensional monster, STOOD BACK UP to stab Ultima in the neck, then spent his last moments giving Clive a heartwarming and encouraging speech. He went out on his own terms, despite being a dominant. Bravo Cid 🫡

Imreann 0/10

Just look at this asshole. He genuinely thought Jill wouldn't kill him. His last moments were spent like "Wait, why is the girl I horribly mistreated killing me? That's not fair!" I considered giving him a pity point because Jill's badassery is awesome in this scene, but nah.

Hugo 4/10

The fight was a 10/10, but his death was too quick after that to really show any badassery. He used up everything he had to fight Clive, which I'll give him points for. But just turning instantly to stone like that... I dunno, he just seems pretty 'armless.

Sylvestre 6/10

Again, giving points here for dying to protect your kid. Even if your kid is a possessed monster from a conniving bitch. I gave him an extra point for running even though he needs a cane. And another because I'm pretty sure he figured out he was a dumbass all along in his last minutes.

Olivier 2/10

I'll give points for this death making me laugh. It wasn't a badass death at all, but I still clapped in my head.

Annabella 4/10

I hate this cunt so much. I wanted to kill her myself, but she stole that too. I'll give her points for the mystery of whether she actually thought Joshua was a demon or if she was just manipulating to the very end. Plus a point for trying to cut Joshua with her knife. If she really did think he was a demon, at least she tried to defend herself.

Barnabas 9/10

The fight was great. The crazy-man laugh was great. The best part though, is that he got one over the most overpowered person on the planet just by grabbing his ankle. Clive didn't even want Odin's power, but Barnabas was like "nope, you're slurping my powers whether you want to or not." I took off a point for his last words reminding the player of the scene of him cuddling his mom naked, ugh not the last thing I want to remember about the dude.

Dion 3/10

I gave him points because the "I ask not for acceptance but for forgiveness" part was cool, but everything else about this death was stupid. He's still babbling about his worthless father. He doesn't even mention the one person genuinely in his corner. He's badass the rest of the game, so his Suicide by Demigod death is incredibly stupid. Look, I've spent way too much time in the past in a therapist's chair ticking The Bad Boxes so I really, really understand the mental state. But that doesn't change the fact that killing yourself over something you didn't have control over is stupid. It would have been far more badass if he managed to find a way to live with himself, because that's far harder than offing yourself.

Joshua 10/10

Joshua was frail and weak, but he really powered through until the end. His dedication was admirable. He gave it his all, including his Phoenix powers. His last speech to Clive was so sweet, and it really showed his faith in Clive to do what was right for the world.

Ultima 7/10

The fight was great. But the sheer pettiness here won me over. Clive won fair and square, and Ultima is STILL getting his digs in, right up to the last second. His last words are pure snark. Maybe that's not very badass, but I can at least respect it.

Clive 9/10

I respect his ability to swim/float to the beach after that last fight. That's badass. I only took a point off because he didn't drag himself very far onto the beach. His body may be in trouble when the tide comes in. It's nice that his last moments are thinking of the ones he loved. But most impressive of all is that despite JUST dragging himself out of the water, his hair looks like he just stepped out of the salon. Like, damn. Nobody will ever top that ability. No man can compete with that.

I agree with all of your movies, Zal. Most of yours would be mine, as well so if any anons have a beef with your choices, I got your back. For me, I’d also add Sabotage (Hitchcock/Sylvia Sidney & Oskar Homolka) and What Dreams May Come (Robin Williams & Annabella Sciorra) and Doctor Zhivago (Omar Sharif & Julie Christie).

Anyhoo, my question is this—in light of His Girl Friday, what other movie classics (I’ll say up until 1975) would you add to that list?

And yes, I’m interested if you’d do a post for TV shows as well.

:) I actually keep wondering if there's a Hitchock film that I like and I always end up not being able to think of any. I just think it's because North by Northwest was my first introduction to him and I had a BAD reaction to it, haha.

“Well, well, well, if it isn’t Eva Shelby…” Jasper’s sarcastic tone dripping with his heavy British accent came from the shadows as Eva had been heading to the herbalist.  It brought her to a stop as she spun to see exactly who it was that was calling her name at such a late hour in that area of town.  The voice sounded familiar,  too familiar.

“I know you?”  Her eyes narrowed, chin lifting as she surveyed him.  Her senses prickling at the man before her, no not a man.  Who was he, and why was he here?

“Oh now, darling, you’ve made enough curses and sent me on enough missions to do your bidding, you might not know my face, but you do know my real name.  Don’t invoke it now though, that would not be seemingly, just call me Jasper for the moment.”  Seeing her eyes widen was delightful for him.  Oh, it was sinking in for the witch as he drew closer to her, the tap of his silver tipped cane making a nice thud each time it hit the dirt of the road between them.  “Don’t worry, I’m not here to threaten, I just thought we should meet.  You see, a dear friend of mine is a dear friend of your husband’s.  So, there will never be a threat on my part.  She is far too important to me, in addition to our business arrangement.”  He winked with a cocky grin as he strutted, yes strutted over towards Eva.  She was beautiful, he could well see why Shelby had married her.  

“The blonde? Anna?” Eva’s eyes narrowed as she took measure of the fair haired, tall male sauntering towards her.  She knew she’d sensed something different about the woman he’d mentioned, not threatening, just…different.  Now with the male before her, he was giving off seriously dark energy and she had a feeling she knew somewhat what it might be.  

“Ah, so you do know her, darling.”  Jasper grinned smugly.  “She’s no threat either.  Quite fond of your Thomas, she is, but if you think you are territorial, you cannot even imagine what an angel who finally found his mate after waiting since the dawn of creation can be like.”  His lips twitched up even more.  “He has stopped pulling the wings off of the one angel who kept being an asshole and flirting with her though, such a mess,” he chuckled and gave a false shudder, “feathers and angel blood everywhere and having to be around so much Light to have them put back on.”  His eyes rolled with a slightly disgusted look on his face.  “And she’s just as disgustingly besotted with him.” 

“And now you want?” Did this male ever shut up?  No?  Eva cantered her head still with narrowed eyes as she regarded him.

“Ah, yes, darling.  I was getting to that, you see.”  Once more with the self assured grin.  “It is All Hallows Eve, as you well know, and the veil is oh so deliciously thin, and your curses have all run their course.” His eyes narrowed at her as his grin turned wicked in nature.  “I need you to make a few more, invoke my name for some bidding, damn a few people, the usual….  I’d just like to add a bit more wickedness to my repertoire, garner a few more souls to my stash, assist one of my favorite witches in her endeavors to set her husband up at the top of everything.  I’m only on this side of the pond for a short time more before I mosey back over to New Orleans and I’d like to collect some extra gravitas before I do.  And you, little witch, shall get whatever it is your little black heart desires in return, as always.”  He grinned and winked.  Jasper might be a demon but he did believe in even exchange of services after all.  Normally he did not deal directly with the witches who summoned him to do their bidding, but there were special cases.  As Eva was attached to someone near and dear to Annabella, that made her one of those special cases. 

“Can I watch?” Now it was her smirk that turned devious.  There were a few of her husband’s enemies who had thrown slurs in her direction in languages they did not think she knew, who underestimated her, or think she did not deserve to be considered in their social class.  She would love to see them get their just rewards a the had of her friendly neighborhood demon.  “Ah, now there is a catch darling, I can’t make you….” he paused for a second and thought.  No, he could not make Eva’s physical body invisible, however there was something he COULD do, and that would allow her to watch.  “It is going to take a little navigation on your part, but I believe we can come to an arrangement.  See, due to agreements that keeps certain organizations from obliterating me, I cannot make your corporeal body invisible.  However, once you are asleep, if you were to summon me from within your dream and bid me to carry out these murders from within your dream but have them take place in the corporeal realm, well, I’m afraid Lady Shelby, I would be bound as a demon to do that.  At which time if you so instructed me to take your incorporeal spirit along keeping it too safe, well, I have been summoned after all.”  Jasper’s grin was devious and mischievous.  There were ways around all rules if you were creative enough.  He hadn’t found a rule in Heaven, Earth, or anywhere else he hadn’t been able to circumnavigate. 

“Then we have a date, Jasper.”  Eva’s grin matched his as her voice became smooth as velvet.  For some reason she knew that she could trust this demon, if for no other reason than he would be getting what he wanted out of the arrangement either way.  Killing her would only bring him trouble from her husband’s friend.  “Till then.”  She inclined her head to him before heading on her way.

It was just after midnight when Jasper got the tingle of a summons.  Being a powerful demon, he did have the choice to respond, but he knew from whom this summons came and with a smirk he mysted into her dreams.  Finding himself in a clearing within the woods just outside of London he found it “quaint”.  

“I do like the atmosphere you set, Eva.”  He chuckled as he looked over at the witch and extended his hand that had his signet ring with his demonic sigil on it.  “Shall we.  Make sure you do not let go of my hand or you shall be pulled back into your dream.  You are somewhere safe aren’t you?”

“I am asleep in my husband’s arms, nowhere safer.”  Eva gave him a smug smirk of her own as her hand slid into his larger one. 

In a flash, they were outside of the home of a politician who had made it his mission to undermine Tommy.  Of course that was never a smart move on a good day, but on this night, it was even a worse one.  As the duo walked up the stairs, Jasper’s head tilted as he looked over at Eva with a devious and quite pleased smirk.  “Ready for some mischief and mirth, dear witch?”  He gave her a wink before they walked straight through the closed front door.

Then it was up the stairs to his bedroom.  While Jasper always did appreciate a good snack of a plump human, tonight he would not be indulging in such delicacies.  At least he would be refraining while Eva was with him, once her soul was returned to her body…well, what happened, happened.

The master bedroom was easy to find from the prolific and voluminous snoring.  If for no other reason than to bring peace to the house, Jasper was going to enjoy this death.  Thank the Source, and possibly the Divine, that none of the residents of the Palace made such a cacophony whilst he tried to slumber or no doubt the lovely Abriella would have slit his throat by now.  

“Now, darling, put your little hand right over his heart.  Yes, just like that.”  Jasper was grinning downright devilishly. “Push down through his chest and squeeze.  You can go as slow or as fast as you like.”  He couldn’t help by chuckle at the look of relishment that was upon her beautiful face as she ended his life.  At the last moment, the man’s eyes flew open and Jasper was sure he could see them.  He’d have to ask when he was next in Caligo.  He did so like visiting victims, after all.

“Now, on to the next one.  Isn’t this so much fun?”  He grinned, his teeth winking in the moonlight filtering in through the windows.

By the time that Jasper returned Eva to her dream, there were eight dead men and two dead women, NEVER flirt with Eva’s husband, in London.  Eva had learned object manipulation, and there was a fire still burning.  Oops?  However, none of what happened could be tied back to anyone in the Shelby family at all.  Of course not. “Now, remember, darling,” Jasper started as he prepared to depart, “you owe me some delicious curses soon too.”  With a wink he was gone, and definitely glad that the name she thought she had for him was NOT it.

And before u ask, yes Saragona used to have a blondish brown long haircut before Lucas cut it and dyed it pink for Saragona's curse. Saragona was a brat to Annabella because she was "ugly" but his feelings change throughout the story.

Holiday headcanon

I headcanon the Magnus institute gets various gift hampers from Donors and such. You really only want to open 2/3rds of them.

Elias takes the 'good' ones and leaves dodgy ones for the rest of his employees.

Never open the one sent by Annabella Cane it's just live spiders.

The ones sent by John Amherst smell terrible and are biohazards

Simon sends something good ironically: a bottle of Prosecco, fancy Italian candy, chocolates, marzipan birds, cheese and three giftcards for free skydiving Only Ned from the library used them and that was the end of Ned.

The Lukas family(Probably just Peter) sends a deluxe hamper, that is perfectly good, but Elias steals it. Tim stole a small cheese from it once and Elias gave him nightmares for a week. It's mostly sent either in lieu of Alimony or as make up gift.

Maxwell Rayner sends either just DARKNESS or like dark chocolate, black licorice with cryptic warnings.

Salesa it's a toss up some years its nice food hamper for being a good customers others, it's items he couldn't shift

Hezkiah Wakely just sends DIRT that's it.

The Distortion will snatch you if open their hamper

Opening the hamper sent by the Lightless Flame cult will trigger the lighter and well it smells like petrol, so no one is opening it.

Hi so if Michael distortion was the archivist of the Magnus institute after the apocalypse (I don’t care about canon I really don’t) he’d definitely have a breakdown over not wanting to be like Gertrude . And he’d probs envy Jon and eye avatars in general since like archiving anything is very spiralphobic and I doubt he’d be able to . Why would he ? Idk man delusion incarnate doesn’t make sense and also I heard a song , got the idea , and ran with it .

“Ah ah ah!” Annabella scolded as she saw Kaldur begin opening a frozen meal. “I did not spend all afternoon cooking healthy food just for you to eat this.”

Kaldur blinked at her as she snatched the meal from his hands and tossed it. He recovered when she opened the fridge and pulled out two Tupperware containers.

“Is that why my fridge is suddenly stock piled?” Kaldur questioned as Annabella stuck one of the containers in the microwaves

“Maybe…” Annabella mumbled not really looking at him.

“I thought you were trying to keep a low profile.” Kaldur noted knowing he didn’t have that much fresh produce or Tupperware for that matter.

“I am. You’re not the only person I know who lives in Happy Harbor.”

“And yet I’m the one you came to.”

“Yeah well.” Annabella trailed off she honestly wasn’t sure how to respond to that because she honestly had no idea why she came here in the first place.

A bit of silence fell between them as they waited for the food to heat up. When one was done Annabella handed it to Kaldur.

“You really didn’t have to do this.” Kaldur said as he took the dish and grabbed a fork, Annabella shrugged.

“You said I could do anything around the house and, well, cooking seemed like the best option. You know I used to think your mother was crazy for thinking you looked too thin when she would visit but after seeing what you call food I’m starting to think she might have a point.” Annabella explained as she grabbed her food and took a bite.

Kaldur smiled softly at the thought of his mother and glanced into the living room.

“Well I guess I should be thankful you filled my fridge with food instead of filling my living room with baking sheets.” Kaldur said with a soft smile.

“Oh gods finals were always a nightmare.” Annabella said remembering the times she filled the cave living room with pastries.

“I honestly don’t know why you would panic so much, you are very smart.” Kadlur said as he ate.

“Hey finals were hard.” Annabella pouted. “Especially those last ones.”

Kaldur frowned slightly and Annabella felt his slight hint of guilt.

“Don’t.” She warned.

“Don’t what?” Kaldur asked.

“Don’t start Kaldur.”

Kaldur sighed. “You were so excited to graduate so early and I missed it.”

“Kaldur I don't blame you for not being there. You were going through a lot at the time I understand that you needed your space.”

“I should have at least made an effort to go instead of just taking off on my undercover mission.” Kaldur tried to reason.

“You did what you had to do in the moment and I understand, Kaldur it was just a graduation and a party you missed and I’m not holding that against you.” Annabella paused as she felt a stronger form of guilt come from him. “And stop blaming yourself for the Reach thing, I let myself get taken, I put myself in that situation. What they did and what resulted is 100% on me.”

“I went along when you surrendered.”

“You had to otherwise you would have given yourself away and I wasn’t going to let that happen. Besides I nearly clawed your face off later on.”

“Because I let them continue their experiment on you.”

“Don’t give yourself all the credit for that, something tells me that part of my powers would have come eventually the experiment just helped accelerate it. But it's still not your fault.”

Kaldur was about to protest but Annabella quickly cut him off. “Listen we could go back and forth all night about things that should have been on us. Kaldur there were things you could not control, things you could have never seen happen, but those things are not on you. You did the best you could, you helped defeat the light in that moment, yes there were bumps along the road but hey not every mission is perfect.”

“I suppose you are right.” Kaldur said giving in, he knew better than to try and continuing to argue with her.

“You know I am.” Annabella smiled warmly as she felt Kaldur finally begin to relax.

She stirred her food as something she had just mentioned came back to mind. She contemplated asking about it she knew it was a bit of a touchy subject but in the back of her mind she couldn’t help but wonder if this was the reason she had come in the first place.

“Annabella?” Kaldur asked softly. “Are you alright?”

Annabella looked up and slowly blinked at him. “I… yeah… I’m fine.”

Annabella rubbed her face and sighed. “Can I ask you something?”

“Sure.” Kaldur nodded and Annabella paused.

“Um, it's actually a bit of a personal question.” Annabella clarified not wanting to catch Kaldur off guard with her question, true he was used to her random questions but still.

“Annabella tell me.” Kaldur prodded gently.

Annabella focused on her food as she thought about how to phrase her question properly.

“Growing up you knew that you’re father used to work for Black Manta but then he left when he met your mother. You knew that he did some bad things but then he changed… but then you found out that Black Manta was actually your biological father… how… how did you really take that new in. How were you able to process what he really is? I… I know you were going through Tulas death at the time but I just… how were you able to take that kind of news in at the same time?” Annabella looked up at the end of her question staring at Kaldur carefully.

Kaldur had placed his arms on the table and rested his face against his folded hands as he processed the question. He stayed quiet for quite some time that Annabella was about to take back what she had said when he finally spoke up.

“Trying to process Tulas death and the truth about my father at the same time was difficult. I will admit I was very upset upon finding out I had been lied to my entire life. It was hard learning who my father was, someone I’ve fought most of my life, someone who wants my home destroyed. Somehow my guilt and anger made me see things clearly, I knew I needed to do something to prevent something like what happened to Tula every again. That was my focus when I went undercover, what I didn’t expect was how much I’d come to sort of care for him.” Kaldur paused and rubbed his face, Annabella could feel his conflict begin to grow.

“My father did a lot of horrible things, however I did see a side to him that was honorable. It's sad to see how much of his anger clouds that side. I want him to change his ways, in a way I hoped I’d be enough for him to consider it.” Kaldur looked up and though his eyes seemed sad they looked over Annabella curiously.

“I don't blame you for wanting to help your father change.” Annabella whispered softly as she let go of her fork and brought her knees up to her chest.

Kaldur waited patiently for Annabella to continue.

“For the first seven years of my life I grew up thinking my mother was dead. Dad never said she was but just the way he and my grandmother would speak about her it felt like she was. Then my seventh birthday came along and with that cane my powers and suddenly my mom just shows up out of the blue. I never understood why my dad was so adamant about me staying away from her, I mean my mother was alive, she wanted to be with me, she wanted to help me. But the only thing my dad would tell me was that she was dangerous. Not how or why but she just was.” Annabella rubbed her face taking a deep breath as the memories rushed around in her head.

“You remember that night you caught me waking up from a nightmare. It was a week after what happened at the Tower of Fate with Kent Nelson.”

Kaldur nodded thought it was a bit fuzzy he did remember it was the first time he had assisted her through an asthma attack and nightmare.

“You told me about the night before your eighth birthday.” Kaldur began to recall. “You said something about what happened at the tower felt familiar like the night your mother tried to…”

Kaldur paused and stared at Annabella as he remembered how Annabella explained that her mother had kidnapped her, how her father claimed it was for ransom but something didn’t feel right about that explanation but she couldn’t quite remember the details of that night.

“I know now why I don’t have memories of that night at the tower.” Annabella rubbed her head. “Or at least why I didn’t have memories of that night. I know now why my father tried to prevent me from getting near my mother. I know now why she really kidnapped me that night.”

Annabella took a deep breath focusing on the wooden table.

“In short, my mother is a type of witch. She’s obsessed with her power. Or at least she was obsessed with her power. I was an accident, love potion gone wrong, my mother didn’t want me and when she found out that my grandmother had informed my dad she tried to get rid of me. My grandmother saved my life but in doing so took away my mothers magic… my mother never forgave her for that and resented me for it. She’s been trying to find a way to get her magic back ever since, and in her twisted mind she’s resining it with trying to bring back her dead brother.” Annabella rubbed her eyes.

“Dad knew this. He knew and he never told me. Instead he kept me in the dark about everything, he never told me the truth, he altered my mind everyone I came close to finding out about my magic. For months I’d wake up crying wondering why my mother betrayed me. For years I wondered what I did wrong. Only to find out it’s because I was given something I didn’t even want and now…” Annabella stared down at her trembling hands. “I’m scared. I don't want this magic. I don't want it to control me like it does with her. I don't want to be like her.”

Annabella nearly flinched when she felt arms wrap around her but relaxed as she slowly heard Kaldurs heartbeat then she felt everything she had been holding in for days to come out. She held onto Kaldur tightly as she cried, he simply held her back, rubbing her arm and letting her cry on him.

“You won't let this control you. You’ve always been able to figure out your powers. You’re headstrong and smart and caring.”

“What if that’s not enough?” Annabella asked quietly.

“A year ago a smart girl once told me that even though your parents help give us life it doesn’t mean we will become like them.” Kaldur whispered softly and annabella sniffled.

“I hate it when you use my words against me.” Annabella mumbled pathetically resting her head on his shoulder and taking a deep breath.

“If you didn’t keep giving me such wisdom I wouldn’t have to use it against you.” Kaldur smiled softly as he felt her let out a small scoff.

“If you stop getting into stupid situations maybe I wouldn’t have to advise you so much.” Annabella pulled away and wiped her eyes. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t apologize for how you are feeling. The truth can be hard to process especially ones that have been hidden so deeply.” Kaldur said holding her shoulders and softly rubbing them. “But it's what you decide to do with the information that’s important.”

Annabella nodded as she looked down and fiddled with her fingers.

“I’m um… I’m going to turn in early if you don't mind.” Annabella whispered looking up at him.

“Of course I’ll clean up.” Kaldur said getting up and grabbing the dishes.

Annabella slowly made it up to her room and took a deep breath as she closed the door. Her eyes focused on the small wooden box that was nestled next to her laptop. She picked the box up and huffed as she activated it.

“Abuelita.” She shouted as she landed on the wooden floor. “We need to talk.”

The Drama of One-Act of 2020

Ever since the beginning of time, when The Greek God of Wine, Dionysus, built the first theatre in Athens in the 5th Century, theaters proved to be so popular they soon spread all over Greece. Later on came Roman theatre, where they had street theatre. India had classical drama, Mumbai dancing and amazing masks. Chinese had made a new kind of theatre, Shadow puppetry. Then in the 15th-19th centuries. A very popular man known by the name of William Shakespeare made some of the most important plays ever created by mankind: Hamlet, Julius Caesar, King Lear, and Romeo and Juliet. They were held at the Globe Theatre until around 1599-1613 when a fire came through the theatre during a performance of Henry VIII. Luckily, it was rebuilt in 1614, and finally closed in 1642. The longest working theatre still in business is Drury Lane, opened in 1663.  It is one of the important theaters in The West End, which is the hot spot for musicals in the UK. In the USA we have Broadway, plays, musicals, and especially One-Act!

Let's bring this story into today and talk about Pawnee City's One-Act history from 1975 to present.  They went to state 19 times!  For a long time they were successful under the direction of Mrs. Betsy Spitser, taking the team to state many times. And then this one coach came to PCHS: her name was Laura Bloss. Not only was she a high school English teacher but she coached One-Act/Speech and boy, was Pawnee City surprised at her choice of plays!  At first, they hit silver in 2013 for a play called The Penny Dreadfuls, and a Best Actor award for Chase Grizzle. The following year, they finally hit gold with Nora's Lost, which starred Macey Gyhra as old Nora and Hannah Davis as young Nora. And even a forest of trees made from actors! Co-Directors that year were Eric Uher and Candy Sejkora. In 2015, they did not make it to state and had a change in co-directors with Eric Uher gone and replaced with Christina Hilger. In 2016, they struck gold again with Orphan Train, including Best Actor for Steven Bruns and Best Actress for Eve Beethe. In 2017, they took a break from state, but in 2018 Pawnee City was back at state with These Shining Lives with new co-directors came in with Jessica Jacobsen and Angela Sholty. We won silver that year with a Best Actress for Eve Beethe.  But in 2019, they made lightning strike twice with Dark Road, a World War II setting. Funny enough, it won 1st place in all the competitions except state in which we earned third place.  It did win three Actress Awards for Best Actress to Olivia Gottula, Reyana Tegtmeier, and Larissa Tegtmeier.  

Well now it’s 2020 and the world has changed due to COVID-19, a time of masks, hand sanitizing, zooming, and staying at home a lot. In August, a couple days after school started, tryouts and auditions began.   A week later, the cast was finalized, with Reyana Tegtmeier as Kira, Larissa Tegtmeier as Kira’s Mother/Katrina, Tristen Bradbury as Jamison, Stella Hunzeker as Annabella, Gavin McHenry as Kira's Father/Christopher, Kian Schultze as Thomas, Ashylnn Hartman as Jo, Alyssa Pierce as Vandara, and Olivia Gottula as Matt.  This year’s play was Gathering Blue based on an apocalyptic novel of the same name by Lois Lowry which tells the story of Kira, who has a deformed leg. She is recently orphaned since her mother abruptly died from an unknown sickness, and her father died years ago on a hunt with The Hunters.  Well, with a new decade came with new experiments, like adding a new co-director with Angela Hiskett replacing Jessica Jacobsen, some visual effects in the play (like a smoke machine) and also adding a girl (Olivia Gotulla) who plays a boy (Matt) like the early roles of Peter Pan are played by a girl.  After a lot of practicing, late nights, and also zoom calls (since all the leads had to be in quarantine for 14 days), we went to Nebraska City for Pioneer Conference. The Awards came in with Superior Actor/Actress awards for Pawnee City going to Reyana Tegtmeier, Olivia Gottula, Alyssa Pierce, Kian Schultze, Stella Hunzeker, Tristen Bradbury, April Puhalla, and Simon Osborne. Also getting an Outstanding Performance Award for Best Actress: Reyana Tegtmeier. Last but not least we won 1st Place! Later on, after some performances at our school, we did our own One-Act Festival. We got a couple awards this time, with Acting Awards for Reyana Tegtmeier, Olivia Gottula, Alyssa Pierce, Ashlynn Hartman, and Stella Hunzeker with Best Supporting Actress: Olivia Gottula, and last but not least Superior Set Design: Pawnee City!  After Thanksgiving, Pawnee City hosted districts on November 29th. We crossed our fingers when the zoom announcement came. We won Outstanding Tech Crew, Outstanding Acting Awards for Reyana Tegtmeier, Olivia Gottula, Larissa Tegtmeier (for Katrina AND Jamison, since Tristen Bradbury was sick at home), Stella Hunzeker, Ashlynn Hartman, Alyssa Pierce, and Gavin McHenry. Karrie Hiskett, Kennadi Benson, and Trey Marteney won an award for the Tyke Ensemble and last but not least... and once again 1st Place! We were off to State! 

When the day of State came, we went in the morning at 8:00 a.m. on a charter bus, we didn't spend the night at the hotel because of the virus, and for lunch we had sandwiches. Then at 5:30 pm we performed at The Johnny Carson Theater, which felt like we were on Broadway.   Later, we ate Raising Cane's and we left at 7:45 pm.  At 10:30 pm, the awards came while we were on the bus. We heard the announcement that the Outstanding Performance Awards went to Gavin McHenry, Reyana Tegtmeier, Larissa Tegtmeier, Tristen Bradbury, Stella Hunzeker, and Olivia Gottula and Most Outstanding Performer Female to Reyana Tegtmeier. Then FINALLY, State One-Act Champion for Class D1 was: Pawnee City High School with directors Laura Bloss, Angela Hiskett, and Angela Sholty. 

The night before state, I thought that PC would get 3rd again, but then I was surprised with great joy that my name is going on a trophy and will be standing in one of those cases. Also change can be good, with a supporting male role played by a girl or a guard who is autistic. Even though the awards are still in the mail, they will soon be here! I'm glad to live in the place of Pawnee City, Nebraska! I will be in One-Act next year, and writing about it next year in 2021! Hoping for more success next year!

Art Alexakis, the frontman of rock band Everclear, is opening up about his multiple sclerosis diagnosis.

In a statement posted to the band’s website, Alexakis revealed that he had been diagnosed with the disease three years ago but is speaking out in the wake of rumors that he had fallen off the wagon.

The rocker, who takes medication daily and gives himself three injections per week, said doctors discovered he had MS while he was receiving treatment after a serious car accident.

“Three years ago I was in an automobile accident, and though I totaled my car, I am thankful that no one involved was seriously hurt,” the musician, 56, began in the note to his fans. “About two weeks later, I started feeling a tingle and numbness in my arm, thinking it was a pinched nerve in my neck, I went to the doctor and underwent an MRI.”

Alexakis explained that the MRI confirmed he had a pinched nerve, but pathologists also noticed “lacerations and suspicious marks” on his spinal cord, prompting him to see another doctor.

“I was sent to see a neurologist, who did a ridiculous number of tests – more MRI’s, a spinal tap, over fifty blood tests, and numerous cognitive and balance tests,” he said. “After receiving the results, he told me that I have a form of Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS), and that I have had it for anywhere between 10 to 20 years.”

Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) is a form of the disease that is characterized by a cycle of defined attacks, known as relapses or exacerbations, followed by periods of partial or complete recovery or remissions, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The diagnosis seemed to connect the dots for Alexakis, who explained that he had been struggling with his balance, ability to walk, sensitivity to heat and cold, lack of energy and memory for quite some time. “I thought it was just me getting older,” he admitted.

After receiving the devastating news, Alexakis said he sat in his car and cried on the phone with his wife Vanessa for 30 minutes. “I’m sure people in the parking lot thought I was losing it, and I guess I kind of was,” the musician recalled.

Though he acknowledged that he instantly associated MS with “helplessness, wheel chairs, pain, misery, and hopelessness and pity in the eyes of my family and friends,” Alexakis said his wife helped him avoid spiraling into a panic and reminded him that he was not alone on this journey.

“My wife is a lot of things – all good, but one thing she isn’t is fake, something we have in common. We don’t do fake in our family. My wife is a bad ass, and she reminded me in that moment, that so am I,” he said.

In the time since that day, Alexakis said he has continued to tour around the world with Everclear, spend time with his friends and family, and live his life — but now, with some adjustments.

“All that said, I can feel the disease slowly growing in me. I now have to give myself injections three times a week. My neurologist says as long as I stay on the medication, I should live into my 80’s without progression. We shall see,” he wrote.

Alexakis said he’s also looking forward to finishing his first solo album Sun Songs, expected to be released by the summer, and embarking on a solo tour in May called Songs and Stories. In addition, the musician plans to write a book.

And though the diagnosis was years ago, Alexakis felt it was necessary to clarify about his health due to rumors about his drug and alcohol use. (He has been sober for nearly 30 years following a battle with addiction as a teen.)

“One of the reasons I wanted to be more public about my disease is that I have been hearing a lot of people say that I am drinking again or back on drugs because they have seen me look unsteady on stage or around town (people say all sorts of nasty things when they don’t think you can hear them)”

“To be honest, I have never cared about what people say about me personally – except, that is, for the people that I care about (ie..YOU) and what they think. I wanted you to know the truth, simple as that,” he explained.

“So, if you see me stumbling…sweaty, looking both tired and anxious at the same time, maybe a little more confused than usual, or forgetting lyrics yet looking happy (which is weird for me), please know that I have not fallen off the wagon,” Alexakis finished.

“I am just learning how to be the new me,” he added.

Alexakis and his wife share 11-year-old daughter Arizona. The musician also has a 26-year-old daughter Annabella Rose from a previous relationship.

oh my god a fucking flying Corruption avatar is the bee nazi from spider-man. like that’s literally a power, he flies since he’s a sentient hivemind of bees. yeah that’s like the nastiest route to get flight but i guess Corruption is one way to go.

web artifact does compel me though, especially since most artifacts can be used with little to no side effects if you take the proper precautions. might have to do a lot of working out or devise some mini engine to pull/throw yourself around the way spider-man does but yeah that might actually be doable. it’s not clear if it’s annabelle slinging the webs but we do hear in one of her episodes with martin that web gets shot at him to attach him to the web so a web shooter artifact could definitely be done.
