I thought the slavery season of Empire would be a huge downer but episode 1 is actually about how the pyramids, stonehenge, and Sumerian ziggurats (and canals and so on) weren't built by slaves, but essentially ran on the same system as getting your mates over to move furniture in exchange for pizza and beer.
Like we all know about the Drunkards of Menkaure, but the worker's town near the pyramids has animal remains clearly showing they ate lots of meat, far more than an Egyptian farmer would normally eat. And nearby Stonehenge they've found a similar settlement with lots of cooked pig bones. And Sumerian texts describe corvee labour as being a big party, like a barn raising or other working bee, where even the king was expected to pitch in and do his bit.
(Though of course part of the description was "The whip did not strike!" which implies that at other times, people were getting whipped.)

Just finished this. A super-breezy read that straddles mythology, history, storytelling and a bit of geology. Also, this whole story is super Bollywood- twists, turns, debauched kings (did you know there are eyewitness accounts of Ranjit Singh, yes *that* Ranjit Singh, doing the dirty in public on an elephant? With a lady too, haww) courtesans with hearts of gold, torture - the whole shebang.
Super entertaining. Highly recommended.

Horror Movie Review: Tumbbad (2018)
When a family builds a shrine for Hastar, a monster who is never to be worshipped, and attempts to get their hands on his cursed wealth, they face catastrophic consequences.
Tumbbad is a 2018 Hindi-language dark fantasy period horror film directed by Rahi Anil Barve. Additionally, Anand Gandhi served as the creative director, and Adesh Prasad served as the co-director. Defence Minister Anita Anand says Canada is committed to the support of a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific, and is reinforcing its military presence in the region.
Speaking in Singapore at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual intergovernmental security conference, Anand announced Saturday that Canada will significantly enhance its military presence in the Indo-Pacific through Operation Horizon.
Anand said the new operation will replace the Indo-Pacific portion of Canada's existing Operation Projection.
It will involve the annual deployment of an additional warship to the region, increased Canadian participation in international exercises, and strengthened relationships with regional partners through increased security co-operation. [...]

Note from the poster @el-shab-hussein: I just find it incredibly hilarious how the article starts with a string of neoliberal buzzwords about freedom and inclusivity before describing imperialism and military surveillance. Canada moment.

India archive reveals extent of ‘colonial loot’ in royal jewellery collection
File from India Office archive details how priceless items were extracted from colony as trophies of conquest
by David Pegg and Manisha Ganguly
Published: 14:00 Thursday, 06 April 2023
Five years ago, Buckingham Palace marked its summer opening with an exhibition celebrating the then Prince Charles’s 70th birthday with a display of his favourite pieces from the royal collection, Britain’s official trove of items connected to the monarchy. “The prince had a very, very strong hand in the selection,” the senior curator said.
Among the sculptures, paintings and other exhibits was a long gold girdle inlaid with 19 large emeralds once used by an Indian maharajah to decorate his horses. It was a curious choice to put into the exhibition in light of the violent means by which it had come into the hands of the royal family.

As part of its Cost of the crown series, the Guardian has uncovered a remarkable 46-page file in the archives of the India Office, the government department that was responsible for Britain’s rule over the Indian subcontinent. It details an investigation, apparently commissioned by Queen Mary, the grandmother of Elizabeth II, into the imperial origins of her jewels.
The report, from 1912, explains how priceless pieces, including Charles’s emerald belt, were extracted from India as trophies of conquest and later given to Queen Victoria. The items described are now owned by the monarch as property of the British crown.
Plundered stones
To fully understand the context behind the jewels, and their place in India’s history, it was necessary to visit the archives.
A journal records a tour in 1837 of the Punjab area in north India by the society diarist Fanny Eden and her brother George, the governor general of the British Raj at the time. They visited Ranjit Singh, the maharajah in Lahore, who had signed a “treaty of friendship” with the British six years earlier.
The half-blind Singh wore few if any precious stones, Eden wrote in her journal, but his entourage was positively drowning in them. So plentiful were the maharajah’s gems that “he puts his very finest jewels on his horses, and the splendour of their harness and housings surpasses anything you can imagine,” she wrote. Eden later confided in her journal: “If ever we are allowed to plunder this kingdom, I shall go straight to their stables.”
Twelve years later, Singh’s youngest son and heir, Duleep, was forced to sign over the Punjab to the conquering forces of the British East India Company. As part of the conquest, the company did indeed plunder the horses’ emeralds, as well as Singh’s most precious stone, the legendary Koh-i-noor diamond.
Tumblr media

Today, the Koh-i-noor sits in the crown of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, on display at the Tower of London, and it has become an emblem of Britain’s tortured relationship with its imperial history.
Anita Anand, a journalist and historian who co-wrote a book titled Koh-i-noor on the diamond, said it was “a beautiful and cold reminder of British supremacy during the Raj”, the period between 1858 and 1947 when India was ruled by the crown.
“Its facets reflect the fate of a boy king who was separated from his mother,” Anand said. The stone too was “taken far away from his home, recut and diminished”. Anand said: “That is not how India sees itself today.”
Buckingham Palace is plainly aware of the sensitivities surrounding looted artefacts. After the Indian government let it be known that for Camilla, the Queen Consort, to wear the Koh-i-noor at Charles’s coronation would elicit “painful memories of the colonial past”, the palace announced she would swap it for a less contentious diamond.
But, as was discovered by Queen Mary, the Koh-i-noor was not the only gem taken from Singh’s treasury to have found its way to the British monarchy.
Royal with a pearl necklace
Among the jewels identified in the document found by the Guardian is a “short necklace of four very large spinel rubies”, the largest of which is a 325.5-carat spinel that later came to be identified as the Timur ruby.
Its famous name is erroneous: research by the academic Susan Stronge in 1996 concluded it was probably never owned by Timur, a Mongol conquerer. And it is a spinel, a red stone similar to, but chemically distinct from, a ruby.
Elizabeth II was shown handling it in the 1969 BBC documentary Royal Family, and was clearly acquainted with the myths surrounding it. “The history, of course, is very fascinating. It belonged to so many kings of Persia and Mughal emperors, until Queen Victoria was sent it from India,” she observed.
Tumblr media

The queen was never pictured wearing the item. However, she may have worn another of the Lahore treasures, identified in the India Office report as “a pearl necklace consisting of 224 large pearls”.
In her 1987 study of royal jewellery, Leslie Field described “one of the Queen Mother’s most impressive two-row pearl necklaces … made from 222 pearls with a clasp of two magnificent rubies surrounded by diamonds that had originally belonged to the ruler of the Punjab” – almost certainly a reference to the same necklace.
Tumblr media

In 2012, Elizabeth II attended a gala festival at the Royal Opera House in London to celebrate her diamond jubilee. Photographs showed her wearing a multi-string pearl necklace with a ruby clasp.
Were these Ranjit Singh’s pearls? There was speculation they may have been, though Buckingham Palace was unable to confirm either way.
Queen Mary’s interest appears to have been prompted by curiosity about the origin of some of her pearls rather than any moral concern about the manner in which they were obtained. But a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said slavery and colonialism were matters that “his Majesty takes profoundly seriously”.
Shashi Tharoor, formerly an undersecretary at the United Nations, and currently an MP in India, said: “We have finally entered an era where colonial loot and pillage is being recognised for what it really was, rather than being dressed up as the incidental spoils of some noble ‘civilising mission’.
“As we are seeing increasingly, the return of stolen property is always a good thing. Generations to come will wonder why it took civilised nations so long to do the right thing.”

Birthday greetings to the living music legend of the Hindi film industry, Sri #Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma (03/09).
The iconic music director duo #LaxmikantPyarelal is synonymous with Hindi film music, particularly its popular hits. Born on September 3, 1940, Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma is the son of the renowned trumpeter, Pandit Ramprasad Sharma, also known as Babaji. Under his father's guidance, Pyarelal started learning the violin at just 8 years old, dedicating 8 to 12 hours daily to practice. He further refined his violin skills under Goan musician Anthony Gonsalves. The song "My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves" from the film Amar Akbar Anthony is a tribute to Gonsalves, featuring music by the Laxmikant–Pyarelal duo.
At 12, Pyarelal began playing the violin in various studios, including Ranjit Studios, to support his family financially. His brother, Gorakh Sharma, also contributed by playing guitar for songs composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
The duo first gained widespread recognition with their music for the 1964 film Dosti, produced by Rajshri Productions. Despite relatively unknown lead actors, the film's memorable songs like "Chahoonga Main Tujhe Shaam Savere" and "Rahi Manwa" made it a hit. Many initially thought Laxmikant–Pyarelal was a single person. They won their first Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for Dosti, beating industry giants like Shankar–Jaikishan and Madan Mohan. Their subsequent work in films like Lootera, which featured famous Lata Mangeshkar songs, also gained fame.
By 1966, Laxmikant–Pyarelal had firmly established themselves in Bollywood. They continued to earn acclaim for their music in films like Aaye Din Bahar Ke and Pyar Kiye Jaa. In 1967, they had a series of hits, including the Golden Jubilee musical hit Farz, and other big-star films like Anita and Shagird. They won their second Filmfare Award for the film Milan.
Laxmikant–Pyarelal, along with contemporaries like Rahul Dev Burman and Kalyanji-Anandji, represented a new era in Bollywood music, overshadowing earlier composers. They were frequently chosen by major film producers and consistently delivered exceptional music.
Their significant collaboration with lyricist Anand Bakshi led to some of Bollywood’s most iconic songs, appearing in over 250 films. Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics for all the films that earned Laxmikant–Pyarelal Filmfare Awards, except for their first. #RajeshKhanna also had a long-standing professional relationship with the duo, choosing them as the music directors for 26 of his films.
Another fruitful partnership was with singer Asha Bhonsle, who voiced numerous hits composed by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, including chart-toppers like "Dhal Gaya Din" and "Hungama Ho Gaya." The latter song was re-recorded for the 2014 film Queen and became a massive hit again. Between 1980 and 1986, Asha Bhonsle was often the lead vocalist for their compositions. Laxmikant–Pyarelal also scored music for the Telugu film Majnu in 1987, which was well-received for its musical numbers.

I'm reading Sophia by Anita Anand, which is about the British Indian suffragist Sophia Duleep Singh, and there's a quote from Queen Victoria about Sophia's father, a former child Maharajah whose kingdom was stolen by British fuckery:
"I always feel so much for these deposed Indian princes."

Listening to Empire Podcast and Anita Anand mentions visiting a British Ugandan Indian family and seeing a picture of Idi Amin on their shrine. She was like "what. why. Didn't he throw you out of the country?" and they went "Exactly. If it wasn't for him we'd still be back in Africa."

Hi! I usually never send these but I’ve been following you for a while and love your desi content! I just saw your new pfp and I had to tell you because I used to be OBSESSED with Anand. Like I watched it so many times when I was a kid that 1. our disc stopped working😭 and 2. when I rewatched it last week I could quote the whole movie by heart😅. And now I’ve been listening to the soundtrack on repeat. Anyways I just wanted to say how nice it is to see desi content on main and that I am also obsessed with Sita Ramam❤️
*poking @budugu* LOOK LOOK ANOTHER ONE!
baby boo I feel this fluttery feeling whenever a person comes up to my ask box like "WE HAVE AWESOME TASTE MANU WE BOTH LOVE ANAND AND WE BOTH EXIST ON THIS SITE"
this moment reads like an 'if i had a nickel' joke and im loving it!
I USED TO WATCH IT ON DVD TOO! my dad made three copies just for me and i used to like, listen to those songs five hundred times every day to choreograph steps (Anand and Bommarillu and Godavari because i am a person of exquisite taste like that)
and then my stereo player broke and dvds went out of existence (I know why my dad cries about the floppies now) and I was taken from one of my true loves. Godavari and BOmmarillu still play on the tv but they don't roll Anand if their kidney was stolen.
Whenever I manage to see it now, I know the script by heart and the different expressions, and how the songs are so neat and tied up, and how Anand and Roopa was my first boy next door + grumpy - sunshine himbo trope... Set my standards high like you wouldn't believe. Even Anita and Raju, who weren't even together, were couple goals and I will die on this hill
(also, am I the only one who notices new hidden meanings with every rewatch... cz THERE ARE SO MANYYYY!)
thanks a lot for this ask darling, made my day right in the morning... and it's wonderful to see people responding to the desi content and rambles I post on main
youtube
this is my way of saying you look amazing today kanna

Canada concludes agreement for 88 F-35A fighters

After selecting the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter as its future fighter in March 2022, the Canadian government finalized an agreement to acquire 88 copies of Lockheed Martin.
The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) expects to receive the first aircraft in 2026, with a milestone of total operational capacity for the entire fleet between 2032 and 2034.
Tumblr media
The estimated investment for this project is US$ 14.2 billion and represents the largest RCAF investment in the last 30 years. Includes associated equipment, configuration and maintenance services, as well as the construction of hunting squadron facilities in Bagotville, Quebec, and Cold Lake, Alberta.
Tumblr media
"In today's complex global environment, Canada requires an army that is flexible, agile and capable of responding to a variety of unforeseen situations. We are committed to ensuring that our current and future aviators have the most advanced equipment possible to do just that. Canada requires a fleet of fighters to contribute to the safety of Canadians and protect the sovereignty of one of the largest expanses of airspace in the world. We are excited to announce today that Canada has selected the F-35 as the fighter that will play this important role," said Anita Anand, Canadian Minister of National Defense.
The Canadian government said that the announcement of the contract “is also excellent news for Canadian companies and workers in the Canadian aerospace and defense sector”.
Tumblr media
The initial acquisition and support of the F-35 project has the potential to contribute more than C$ 425 million annually to Canada's gross domestic product and about 3,300 annual jobs for Canadian industry and value chain partners over a period of 25 years (direct and indirect). In addition, there will be investments in the renewal of national defense infrastructure at various bases throughout Canada, which will include many Canadian site construction and maintenance companies. The Canadian industry will also have significant support opportunities related to the Canadian fleet. Opportunities are expected in areas such as fuselage and engine maintenance units, as well as in training and maintenance of components over the life of the fleet.
Tumblr media
The F-35 strengthens Canada's operational capacity with its allies as a cornerstone for interoperability with NORAD and NATO. As a critical node in the space of the 21st century security mission, the F-35 offers pilots an advantage over any opponent and allows them to carry out their mission and return home safely.
Tumblr media
Canada is buying the F-35 after launching the bidding process to acquire a successor to the CF-18 Hornet fighter fleet in 2017. A formal request for proposals was launched for qualified suppliers in July 2019 and closed in July 2020.
Tumblr media

It is noteworthy that Canada is already an international partner in the F-35 program, alongside the US, United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, Norway and Denmark. Canada has been investing in the Joint Strike Fighter program since 1997, which has provided the Canadian industry with the opportunity to become part of the F-35 supply chain, in addition to ensuring guaranteed access to the F-35.
To date, the F-35 operates from 27 bases worldwide, with nine nations operating F-35s in its territory. There are more than 890 F-35 in service today, with more than 1,870 pilots and 13,500 maintainers trained on the aircraft.
