Sometimes it makes me feel insane knowing that "the reason Alec made one of his kids a Pathfinder is not because he wanted them "to see the process through" but because his SAM cannot be safely integrated into anyone who doesn't carry his genes" is not common knowledge because I doubt many bothered to read Mass Effect Initiation

Anyways, here's an excerpt (Mass Effect Initiation) on the way that turian, asari, and krogan crowds move as opposed to humans

hello everybody i am back with another epic fanfic drop for @marauderswithpalestineproject. this one is andromeda-centric, with heavy focus on her relationship with her sisters, ted as a contrast, and her mother who is also doomed by the narrative (spoiler! everyone in the fic kinda is!). it’s mostly canon compliant (i think i accidentally messed up the birthdays for some of the characters… whoopsie..) and will eventually feature baby nymphadora as a treat for 25k words of angst. mwah mwah check it out if you want to maybe!!

Vetra Nyx/Sara Ryder
This could be really cute before the Andromeda initiative. take Sara a prothean researcher in need of special equipment but not having the clearance to purchase it, Solution your favorite turian Smuggler, Vetra Nyx. And Sara quickly becomes a regular. Insert awkward bantering and poor flirting and a lot of genuine feelings. On her regular run to the reshearch center on some moon somewhere, her ship receives a distress call from the exact center she's traveling to, it's a Cerberus attack. And this would make sense because Cerberus is a group of fucking assholes who piggyback off of other people's dedicated research. Will she go out of her way to help an almost friend and slight crush or will she leave to save her own skin? and why does this happen the one time she brings her sister on a job?

Mass Effect: Andromeda Initiation by N. K. Jemisin and Mac Walters
Tumblr media
3 Stars.
Reading these ME: A books was meant to be my motivation to finish this game and I think they may be working, off to install the game and finally finish it in 2024!
I obviously needed a Cora Harper book to actually make me appreciate her character because she is definitely the most boring character, in my opinion. Everyone had so much going on and she just seemed to be the most generic character.
This actually gave her something, she is so lost and trying to find her way using the initiative program. Seeing her actually use this asari huntress training and powerful biotics was actually fun since the game didn't give me that at all.
That being said I didn't enjoy this as much as Annihilation, let's see how I rank them once I've read nexus uprising.
Finished 15th of December .

#andromeda#one point of conflict in my headcanons is cora's view of ryder sr vs his kid's view of him#she almost idolizes him#they were neglected by him and held to impossibly high standards#I'd commiserate with ryder about fathers a lot#cora also lost her parents#so she doesn't have the same context#he's awful. it makes for a compelling narrative. @fireheartedpup
Yeah, Cora absolutely idolizes him, and it's interesting that it doesn't start out that way in the book. At the start, she's not too impressed with him, but somehow over the course of the book gets to a point where she kind of puts all her hopes for her future on him.
She is written as someone who wants to belong but can't let herself, and by the end of the book she decides that she's going to commit to people ... which probably means Alec Ryder, in that moment. We all know it turned out well for her, but oof does it give her reaction at the beginning of the game a new depth. I never understood it as just "she wanted the promotion and was pissed she didn't get it" anyway, but the book certainly gives it even more of an emotional impact.
Reading the Cora Harper novel. Very interesting, also regarding Alec Ryder. Spoilers ahead.
He used to complain to his friend and colleague about "what's wrong with the children"
The only reason he hasn't done that in months is because he hasn't seen them in months
He misses Ellen because she's not there to take care of him
Going on a vacation with Ellen is framed as "she forced him to go on vacations"
When confronted with the question if he ever visits strip clubs he points to his ring and says he's a married man
He wants SAM to obey him in all circumstances, not just in combat situations
He doesn't like being called out by SAM on his behaviour
He once assaulted the 2nd director of the Andromeda Initiative by flinging him over a table, which burst, leading to the director being hospitalised
His comment about that incident towards SAM? "He fell". (To which SAM says sth like "excuse me, he fell and you accelerated his landing with military combat techniques")
He knows he wasn't a good father and husband and says he wants to do better
When he realises that for all he knows he sent Cora to her death, he feels bad because sending soldiers to their death is what the Alliance military did and in the AI it's supposed to be better
When faced with the choice to help evacuating a whole lot of people from an impending explosion, or go 'evacuate' the SAM node, he still chooses to go for SAM while Cora evacuates the people (and he risks almost dying and would have died and still lost SAM if Cora hadn't saved him)
He rationalises that the rest of the work can be saved, but they can't lose SAM
His end goal for the AI is that every human (!) has their own SAM implant, but each connected to the processor of his SAM, which I understood to mean his SAM can get all the data from the other hypothetical SAMs connected to/dependent from him, which has nightmarish implications about privacy
By the end of the story he comes to the conclusion that he can only transfer his SAM to someone with high genetic compatibility, which means he knows before leaving the Milky Way that Cora is never going to be Pathfinder.
He knows he has to decide who of his children is going to be his heir as the Pathfinder ... which may mean that his decision in the game to die and make the player character Pathfinder might not just be because he wants to spare Ellen the pain of having lost a child once she wakes up, it might also be because the other twin is in a coma at the moment and it's uncertain if they're going to wake up, so the player character is the only one available who can become humanity's Pathfinder in the future? Not that I think that was his only motivation, but going by how his perspective was written by Jemisin, it certainly fits
