Living next door to Auschwitz
"Living next door to Auschwitz", a review of 'The Zone of Interest', a film directed by Jonathan Glazer.
DOES it suit me? Hedwig Hoess (Sandra Huller) tries on the fur coat of a murdered stranger, in The Zone of Interest directed by Jonathan Glazer. WHAT WOULD YOU tell your children if you lived next door to hell? While they ramble through their idyllic garden and live their perfect life, how would you explain the occasional screams of abject terror uttered by strangers, in the night, or the…

The Zone of Interest
Movies watched in 2024
The Zone of Interest (2023, UK/Poland/USA)
Director & Writer: Jonathan Glazer (based on the novel by Martin Amis)
Mini-review:
I expected this to be a pretty hard watch, and it certainly was, but not in the ways I expected. Seeing the peaceful daily life of such vile, inhuman characters was truly disquieting. And that disturbing atmosphere is made even more intense by the unsettling and harrowing sounds going on in the background at all times. That's clearly the contrast the movie wants to highlight, and it delivers in an unforgettable way, thanks to some of the best sound design I've ever heard. I must admit I found it a bit too slow, but I also understand that calm pace is required for the film to work. Also, the whole thing gets even more horrifying when you realize just how timely it is, considering current world events. Anyway, The Zone of Interest is a distressing experience, but it certainly fulfills its goal.

“In the morning went to obednya. Had breakfast all together and Uncle Andrei. Then we 4 with Mama went to our barracks. There was a craniotomy and removed bullet shrapnel. Then [I] bandaged Korzenevsky of the 102nd Vyatsky regiment, Kostyuk of the 107th Troitsky and Moscovite and 215th Sukharevsky regiment. Then sat with our officers. So charming. Top 3 Knockouts From The Stars Of ONE: MARK OF GREATNESS
On Friday, 6 December, ONE Championship will stage the year’s final live event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Knockout artists of the highest caliber will gather and ply their trade at ONE: MARK OF GREATNESS.
Expect to see only the best hard-hitting action from the superstars set to compete in the Axiata Arena.
Before showtime, check out these three memorable knockouts from the athletes scheduled for action at ONE: MARK OF GREATNESS.
Sam-A Gaiyanghadao’s Spectacular Knockout Of Daren Rolland
Competing at strawweight for the first time in his career, Sam-A Gaiyanghadao made an impact in his new weight class.
Leaner and meaner, the former ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion showed great composure to knockout French rival Daren Rolland in the second round of their contest at ONE: CENTURY PART I.
Just as Rolland moved forward to unload a hook-cross combination, the Thai hero stepped back and planted a hard-left onto his rival’s chin. Rolland crumpled to the canvas, and the referee called a halt to the action.
Sam-A has another chance to make history as he challenges “Golden Boy” Wang Junguang for the inaugural ONE Strawweight Kickboxing World Title.
Ramazanov’s Record-Breaking Uppercut
At ONE: HEART OF THE LION in November 2018, Alaverdi “Babyface Killer” Ramazanov scored one of the fastest finishes in ONE Super Series history.
The Russian warrior needed just 57 seconds to stop Andrew “Maddog Fairtex” Miller with a crunching uppercut.
Ramazanov baited the Scotsman to come forward. After a quick knee feint, “Babyface Killer” unloaded a three-strike combination, followed by an uppercut that knocked Miller out cold.
The Dagestani will face Chinese striker “Muay Thai Boy” Zhang Chenglong for the inaugural ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Championship this Friday.
The ‘Braddock’ Barrage
Anderson “Braddock” Silva’s volley of strikes was enough to see off Beybulat Isaev in their light heavyweight tilt at ONE: IMMORTAL TRIUMPH in September.
“Braddock” fired the first shot and quickly had the Russian covered up in the clinch after a series of knees and punches.
Silva went in and connected with two blazing right hands before unleashing an uppercut straight down the middle to floor Isaev and end the match.
“Braddock” will return to action on Friday against Andrei “Mister KO” Stoica at ONE: MARK OF GREATNESS.
For one last time this year, ONE Championship returns to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for ONE: MARK OF GREATNESS at the Axiata Arena on 6 December.
The preliminary card starts on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and the ONE Super App at 6:00pm Singapore Standard Time (SGT).
To watch the main card, tune-in to Toggle at 8:30pm SGT. Also, Channel 5 will cut to the live broadcast at 10:00pm SGT.

Soviet movies recs
Here are some of my faves, I post them links to a site where you can watch them with subs or dubbed.
1. Beware of the car (Берегись автомобиля, 1966, comedy, subtitled).
Innokenty Smoktunovsky (yes, it was him mentioned in Robert Vaughn’s autobiography as the actor who played Hamlet in the Soviet adaptation that came out in 1966) plays the main character, a modest idealistic insurance agent who is appalled by the fact that there is so much corruption around him, so, he starts his revenge by stealing the bad people’s cars... Nobody suspects him, including the police inspector who plays Laertes alongide his Hamlet in an amateur production.
Smoktunovsky is my absolute favourite Soviet actor, he could play all kinds of parts. In this one he is amazing as Yuri Detochkin, an absolutely innocent character who reminds of Prince Myshkin from Dostoyevsky’s The Idiot, another famour part of Smoktunovsky, sadly, it was a theatre role and there are no records available. Oleg Yefremov plays the inspector, Yefremov was one of the most influencial Soviet theatre directors and a famous actor. There is also Andrey Mironov, one of absolute Soviet sex-symbols.
A very good movie and a good place to start.
2. An Ordinary Miracle (Обыкновенное чудо, 1978, fantasy, subtitles)
The Wizard turned a bear into a man. He did that out of fancy and the man will turn back into a bear if he’s kissed by a princess. And, what a coincidence! There is one coming here today! But what if they fall in love? Really, really fall in love?
An extremely poetic story about a creator who has lost control over his creations. Dozens of great actors and wondertul characters. Probably my favourite Soviet movie.
3. The Twelve Chairs (Двенадцать стульев, 1971, comedy, subtitles)
A former aristocrat Ippolit Vorobyaninov leads a miserable life in Soviet Russia. His mother-in-law reveals a secret to him - she hid family diamonds in one of the twelve chairs they once had. Vorobyaninov in cooperation with a young con artist Ostap Bender start a long search for the diamonds.
My favourite adaptation of one of my favourite books. It’s set in the 1920s, full of satire, it’s a light-hearted, beloved by many miniseries. There is one more big adaptation of this book, it stars Andrey Mironov, already mentioned here, and Ippolit there is played by Anatoly Papanov who played his father-in-law in Beware of the Car. That one is more of a musical and is quite theatrical which is not bad at all, I just prefer this one. There was also a follow-up book called The Golden Calf that was adapted a couple of times as well. So, it’s quite a franchise!
4. Seventeen Moments of Spring (17 мгновений весны, 1973, espionage thriller, subtitles)
OIIIIIII AYEEEEEE My first love!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was the first show that I was obsessed with and one of my first special interests.
The series portrays the exploits of Maxim Isaev, a Soviet spy operating in Nazi Germany under the name Max Otto von Stierlitz, depicted by Vyacheslav Tikhonov. Stierlitz is tasked with disrupting the negotiations between Karl Wolff and Allen Dulles taking place in Switzerland, aimed at forging a separate peace between Germany and the Western Allies.
The series is considered the most successful Soviet espionage thriller ever made, and is one of the most popular television series in Russian history.
I absolutely recommend it to everyone.

State Duma Commission will address the issue of interference in the Russian internal affairs
An inter-factional commission on the issue of foreign interference in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation, including in elections, will appear in the State Duma. This decision was made at an extraordinary meeting of the State Duma Council.
Deputies who have been elected as members of the Commission will be recalled from their holidays so that work can be started immediately. The Commission includes six representatives of the United Russia faction and two representatives of each faction: the Communist Party, LDPR and Just Russia.
Following the results of an extraordinary meeting of the State Duma Council, Chairman of the State Duma Viacheslav Volodin noted that the question of interfering in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation is extremely important, and the decision to create a commission to investigate this issue is logical.
“We made a decision based on the principle that our country strictly adheres, non-interference in the sovereign affairs of other states. We believe that this principle should be the basis for building relations with the Russian Federation,” he stressed.
“We see how state channels of a number of countries voice statements “Get up, Moscow!”, all this confirms interference in the affairs of the Russian Federation. We cannot allow this. That is why it was decided to create a State Duma Commission to investigate the interference of foreign states in the affairs of our country. We believe that the Commission should start its work immediately,” said Viacheslav Volodin.
The Commission will analyze and investigate the facts of interference. As the Chairman of the State Duma noted, later the materials of the Commission may be sent to law enforcement bodies. The Commission’s conclusions, he said, might be “voiced within the framework of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, PACE and we may also send our proposals to a number of countries that by this (interference in the affairs of the Russian Federation – Editor Note) cynically violate our sovereignty, trying to intervene in the affairs of the Russian Federation, carrying out actions incompatible either with the law of our country or with international rules and standards.” In addition, legislative amendments based on the findings of the Commission may be prepared.
The materials, which the Commission will use, are already being submitted to the State Duma. Foreign journalists and diplomats will be invited to the meetings.
“We will do everything in order to ensure our sovereignty,” said Viacheslav Volodin.
The Commission will be chaired by Chairman of the Committee on Security and Corruption Control Vasilii Piskarev. He said that the first meeting will be held on August 23.
“A Commission that consists of 12 people and is led by Vasilii Piskarev, an experienced person, professional leader, has been created,” said Gennady Zyuganov, head of the faction of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.
The parliamentarian noted that “we will not let knockdown, undermine, and destroy our country.”
“We have no right to repeat the tragedy of 1991,” he stressed.
Head of the LDPR faction Vladimir Zhirinovskii noted that “the propaganda of the West has been intensifying recently,” and the goal of this is to repeat what happened in Kiev, Tbilisi, etc. The members of the Commission will speak to journalists and diplomats to clarify the circumstances, the head of the LDPR faction noted.
First Deputy Head of the United Russia faction Andrey Isaev emphasized that the decision to appoint Vasilii Piskarev was unanimously supported by all factions of the State Duma, as did the decision to create the Commission.
“The Commission of the State Duma, and not the inter-factional working group, has been created. This is the body specified by the Constitution of the Russian Federation,” Andrey Isaev clarified and emphasized that the State Duma has the right to create such Commission in accordance with its Rules. Its creation will be assigned by the Resolution of the State Duma when the chamber resumes its work.
“Russia has been periodically accused of interfering in elections and in the internal affairs of other states for several years now. There was no real evidence of this,” Andrey Isaev reminded and emphasized that the facts of interference in the affairs of Russia are obvious, including direct calls through foreign state channels to participate in unauthorized actions, and financing of the so-called unsystematic opposition from abroad.
“The findings of the Commission will be presented to the public,” the parliamentarian said.
“All factions of the State Duma are united in upholding the national and state interests of Russia. We ourselves must deal with our internal problems without foreign interference,” he stressed.
“I am convinced that such a Commission is needed,” said Sergei Mironov, head of the Just Russia faction. He believes that it is necessary to analyze the facts of financing of interference in the domestic policy of our country from abroad, as well as ‘the activities of some diplomats who stay in Russia.’
The initiative to investigate the facts of interference in the internal affairs of our country was earlier made by the leaders of all four factions of the State Duma.
